It’s Back! Double Points December

For a limited time, you can earn an extra 2 points for every question you answer.

‘Tis the season for saying thank you, giving gifts and rewarding hard work. Our way of saying “thank you” to you, the Yahoo! Answers community – for your hard work this year – comes in the form of this special bonus. Yes, it’s baaack DOUBLE POINTS for every question you answer – FOUR instead of two.

Why are we doing this?

We know you enjoy earning points on Yahoo! Answers, especially to move up through the levels. But we also know it can feel like slow progress at times, like a marathon. So, for the month of December (31 days), we’re giving you the chance to sprint! With double points up for grabs, it’s a golden opportunity for you to make some big gains and go for the next level.

When does it start and end?

It starts on December 1st at 12:01am PST and will last until December 31st at 11:59pm PST.  So please, make the most of it! But please remember to always follow our Community Guidelines.

How do I get started?

It couldn’t be easier to get involved. Just sign-in (or sign-up if you’ve not visited before) and start answering questions. The browse categories page is a great place to start or even try looking at your Recommended tab.

Tell us what you think about Double Points December:

We think offering double points is something you will appreciate… we hope it’s not like one of those terrible presents you receive and return.  So just like last time, let us know what you think below – we won’t be offended, promise.

  10. What a stupid idea! Why is December any more special than any other month? Do you really think that people are more insightful in December? Not! What is the purpose other than to pat each other on the back for no apparant reason? Y!A gets stupider and stupider each year and my enjoyment of it gets less and less. Happy Holidays…

  21. I agree with Comical and Steven Jordan thoughts! We should be answering questions not for points but to provide the best answer. So, for next year, please, consider expanding to . . . add points for a best answer, but still keep additional points for answering …

    1) Either same as now (2 points) for answering a question or because of #2 make it 1 point extra.

    2) Double point (e.g. 10) for a best answer or say 50% bonus (5 points).

Anyway, IMHO and I think others, extra points for a best answer may be a very nice reward for December 2013.

  25. One of the reasons that adding comments will be more plentiful in my case is because I’m out of school (medical leave) and I look forward to reading the questions that are posted. I’ve gotten to the point that I don’t care anymore about reaching TOP CONTRIBUTOR status. I want to roam around all the categories that appeal to me and see what wisdom I can render. Thank you for the double opportunity.

  41. I think – like everything else in life – there are good and bad points.
The good – all of us who like to answer, even when we want best answer.. have a greater motivation, and a quicker rise in ranks. Plus it lets currently active folks catch up a bit to the older accounts that may not be as active.

The bad – the botz and the YA-answer-friend networks that just post scripted or repeated Q’s and silly or repeated As get rewarded too.
With profile-hiding, the human users can’t pick out and report obvious violators.. and even when selected, the review is too easy evade.

Overall – thanks. I like the spirit of giving, – that’s why most of us are here anyhow!

  43. post-thought

After the “spirit of giving” season is over, I do suggest a review of the point system.
Folks who ask a question should be charged extra if they don’t pick an answer. (even No Best Answer.. is still an answer)..

AND.. I think voters should have a say, in addition to the original questioner.. the one-point per vote is good, but currently the lowest point transaction around. More points (since they hold no intrinsic value) could follow a crowd..
just one method – random +5, +6 points all day long for casting a vote.
another method – crowd-pointing.. if more than 5 votes come in on a Q, then the majority votes all get +1 or +2 in addition to the original +1..
.. if the asker selects a correct answer.. then all the voters for that Q get a bonus +2 or +3..
.. if others report an answer for being off-topic, rude or abusive.. that answer loses the +1 and perhaps more.

  57. I’ve never really understood what the points are useful for. They don’t go towards for shopping discounts or anything do they?

I mean, after you’re at Level 7….so what?
Is it all about bragging that you’ve got a few thousand points? I think being able to USE the points for something would be a better idea.

And while I have your ear…..how come Yahoo is so difficult to navigate? I have been wanting to change my avatar FOREVER & can’t figure out how to do it.

Everything about navigating around Yahoo is so DIFFICULT…..for ME anyway.

Do other people have these problems?
I sent an email asking for help but no one ever responded.

I find the Yahoo site to be very frustrating.

  108. Yahoo is a true star here in cyberspace. Looking back over the years I find myself to be more into a YAHOO selection more than any other. Yahoo Groups as fun clean and creative ways for clubs and other to stay informed. Answers can be funny and very informative. Yahoo has a lot of things to keep anyones interest and why the inside of YAHOO seems to be falling apart with the loss of its CEO.

I can see where some clean ups are needed to bring in more money to YAHOO and would love running the company for a few Months. I think YAHOO has a lot of good selections and would love to see something NEW like YAHOO BLOGERS, a place where BLOG are created in a colorful format. But like groups would have an MENU to select what someone would look for link shown in Answers. Advertivments could be shown on the side(s). and listed by states/countrys. BLOGS to day are hard to find and search out. But that is just one of a few ideas I have to make YAHOO EVEN more a one stop place to visit.

    GO YAHOO,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,a true fan!

  113. Most of the answerers at the top were out of it for points a long time ago. To reward people who accumulate the most points in a month is foolish. That doesn’t mean their answers were close to being correct or helpful nor voted their own answers as best. I get my reward from the satisfaction of helping someone in need. Not points.

  115. I go through the questions alot, but I only answer when I feel that it falls within something that I have insight on which cannot be found using a search engine. I’m almost Level 3, but I’ve only answered about 55-60 questions(I’ve only asked 6). I think a high percentage best answer should be taken into consideration. My 2 biggest requests would be not being able to vote for your own answer, and removal of answers such as one where a member actually made a joke about autism when the question was from a parent with a child with autism that is still up. I’ll end it on a good note though, It’s very gratifying to know you’ve truly helped someone, and thanks to those who helped me with questions I couldn’t find the answer to anywhere.

  118. Hello Staff–It’s clear from these comments and other sources that most users of the forum are motivated by the point system. Knowing this, Y!A could use the information as an incentive for much-needed restructuring. Please take the constructive advice offered here and reform the system. The comment earlier is one example. Here’s a copy in case you missed it:
Folks who ask a question should be charged extra if they don’t pick an answer. (even No Best Answer.. is still an answer)..

AND.. I think voters should have a say, in addition to the original questioner.. the one-point per vote is good, but currently the lowest point transaction around. More points (since they hold no intrinsic value) could follow a crowd..
just one method – random +5, +6 points all day long for casting a vote.
another method – crowd-pointing.. if more than 5 votes come in on a Q, then the majority votes all get +1 or +2 in addition to the original +1..
.. if the asker selects a correct answer.. then all the voters for that Q get a bonus +2 or +3..
.. if others report an answer for being off-topic, rude or abusive.. that answer loses the +1

This new year brings us a chance to make some improvements. Why not take it to heart? I belong to Tiebusters and our leader, 4wheels, would be a valuable consultant should you wish more feedback. You have plenty of other devoted followers and volunteers who will support you in a restructuring campaign. Go for it!

  120. I must have missed out on something. Moved to the west coas in July and just got internet almost fixed. Something happened during the time I was looking for the computer! Anyway, I like the points system. Not always, but most of the time I seem to think that people with lots of points have lots to say. I keep my eyes on those people to see how it works out, and I have a couple of favorites.

  121. Points mean nothing to me. I don’t even ‘get’ the reason that it does to anyone. They have no value.

I note that the points must mean something to some by the fact that so many put something on questions without answering the question. They post, “idk”, “this is stupid”, and a plethora of other ignorant, rude and inappropriate ‘answers’. I take it they do that because they want points, perhaps it is just because they are rude?

What is going to have me stop contributing to the site is that I am tired of spending A LOT of time to answer someone’s question and then they don’t even take the time to actually choose the ‘best answer’ and make a remark about if it helped, or thank me. When my answer is chosen as ‘best’ by ‘voters’ it means nothing to me. I feel that the time I gave to answer the question may not have even been read or actually needed by the asker. It is an INSULT to the value of my time.

There are days that I sit down and think I will answer a few questions in math and English homework and the next I know it has been hours! This is FREE work and the LEAST the askers could be REQUIRED to do is to take THEIR TIME to respond and thank the people that gave their time and effort to answer their questions. Especially when SO many of them are far more appropriate to have just done a search and get their own information. That is all I have to do many times, is take MY time to do the search and get the answers and documentation for THEIR question.

YOU do NOT filter the questions. That results in MANY unrelated questions in the homework category, even ones that do NOT belong anywhere on YA. It results in people with nothing better to do than ask questions, the same one at times, over and over and over with no need for the answers, just a need to see how many people will actually take their time to respond.

I got hooked on answering questions because I enjoy sharing information and challenging myself to learn more in order to answer a question intelligently and thoroughly. When other things in my life get pushed aside to help a stranger and they can’t even make a choice themselves on a ‘best answer’, let alone thank us and make comment on how the answer assisted them, then I need to give my time, effort and knowledge elsewhere.

There are other sites that DO filter the questions, put them in the right category and eliminate inane misuse and abuse of the site and the people that take their time to read and answer the questions. Some of these sites even PAY for the answers found ‘best’ for the asker.

YOU need to make it mandatory that if someone asks a question that THEY take THEIR time to come back to YA, choose a ‘best answer’ AND thank the responders. If they consistently do not follow through with their question’s impact and effort of others, they should be sanctioned in some way that will have them think and act differently in the future if they wish to continue to USE and TAKE benefits from this forum and the people that give of their time to answer the questions. POINTS are useless, have no real value to anyone that is actually answering questions for the sake of helping others (IMO) and are not the driving force that has people giving freely (literally) or their time to this forum. The thought that my input may really assist another in need is what has value. APPRECIATION, or at least the knowledge that the asker read the responses, would be nice. Not only would it be nice, it will be the driving force in the New Year if I continue to provide this forum with my time.

  122. My “Top Contributor” rating was taken away. I’ve noticed that people who have fewer points and have answered fewer questions and have a lower percentage of “Best Answers” do have “Top Contributor” rating. So what is going on anyway?
