Sugar does NOT make children hyper

**Secret Revealed**
I’ve only been a dad for a few weeks, so I can’t provide any anecdotal evidence on this one. Thankfully, a much more scientific source is available. The British Medical Journal has published a study that concludes: sugar does not make children hyperactive.
Of course, we’ve all heard this myth. There are even some parents who give their kids pixie stix, hoping it will give them more energy.
However, the results from at least 12 double blind randomized controlled trials have shown that there is no noticeable difference in a child’s behavior regardless of how much sugar they have consumed. Even kids who are considered “sensitive” to sugar or have attention-deficit/hyperactive disorder are not more hyper after consuming sugar.
There does appear to be a placebo effect though. The study indicated parents do rate their children as more hyperactive after their child has consumed what appears to be a sugary drink, even if the drink was in fact sugar free.
That’s food for thought.

sugar just make you sick (gearms feed on sugar)
food dye (yellow 50, red 40 ece.) make you hyper wich is put in 75% of the food in the world, cheeze (yellow cheeze), mints (red stripes), fruit JUCE!( read on back- artafical COLORS and flavors-
you name it, but its not sugar
Parents find there child more hyper after drinking a “sugary” drink probably because it has caffeine in it.
is this REALLY true
No not really only like probably little kids? Under the grade of 4 maybe.
Im still young i know how it feels
Most kids just pretend to be hyper and just wanna be playful and crazy, not unlikely for little kids though. No no it’s weird people say candy makes you hyper but im pretty sure it doesnt only if you give em to much
yes
This flies straight in the face of general experience by parents everywhere. I’ve seen it in my children, my neighbor’s children, hundreds of children. Sugar revs them up. Never mind caffeinated drinks or chocolate, I’m talking about over sweetened fruit juice and sugar candy. I have no idea what methodology the Journal authors employed, but it would seem that none of them have ever been parents.
Yes,it is true.
I have known this for years, and those who also tell us that sugar is a poison are LYING, and in my opinion they should all be blasted into space on a one-way trip!
Hyperactivity is a bunch of B.S.! Children changed when the new age of raising them changed. People these days try to reason with children. It used to be you taught your child patience as she/he grew. You gave them a swat on the behind when they broke the rules. New laws were enacted to prevent child abuse. They didn’t change child abuse. They just changed the way good parents raised kids. Now they pump them full of drugs.
Being given a treat and going to parties make kids hyper not sugar. Additives are controlled very tightly to avoid any side effects hence why there is a warning on mints in case you loose control in more than one way and no warnings on fruit juice.
So hyperactive kids are caused by them being excited and it’s a good thing in moderation, sugary treats are just an easy way to get them excited.
On the other hand sugar will rot their teeth so you should still avoid giving them too much.
well it does my three year old and you can physically see him get hyper and then crash after eating sugar so yes, in my opinion.
I know what a sugar rush feels like – but it doesn’t make you hyper.
I DEFINATELY know the sugary drinks thing to be true, I’ve seen it loads first hand.
SO I think that regardless of the sugar conent in drinks, there is something else in them that sends kids potty, cos it really does send them potty!
Caffeine perhaps?
Give my ADHD son anything with sugar and babysit him for an hour, then come let me know if you still think it has no effect on children.
yes
sugar does have an effect on children and adults as everything pretty much has sugar in it heres an example
If you were going to go to a gym in the morning you would eat something this provides energy to exercise etc
kids ARE the same give them a sandwich and they will have energy as food is required to live food is the batteries of humans pretty much
I have allot of siblings. And from experience, I know that sugar makes you hyper.
You want proof? Fine.
One day we all went to a kids party next store. At the time, they where all excited about it, maybe even a little hyper. ( But that was nothing compared to later.)
And of course, like any party they had candy, cake, etc.
After about an hour of pigging out, they where running and bouncing all over the place. My 5 younger brothers was running around and spraying other kids with confetti while laughing hysterically. My little sister who was wearing a princess dress at the time, was beating up an older boy with her wand for stealing her candy.
We end up having to ask three other adults to help us catch them and bring them back home.
So I would have to say yes, sugar does make you hyper. Heck , I even had two bags of sour patch kids once and ended up talking none stop for an hour straight.
Sugar does make you hyper and I have no idea how you got to thinking it doesn’t.
I believe it! i drinks ALL the time and i dont feel anything from them, i just like the taste..
This might be something you can’t determine or might not have a conclusion to it, the way I see it is like a “I am who I am” kind of thing. For me being fed food or drinking stuff high in sugar would make me weaker for the day. For others it might make them hyperactive. But you can just conclusion this with only 3-100 kids, even with all the kids in the world, there wouldn’t be a conclusion, because everyone is just different and it would have a different effect on people. Maybe it made you hyperactive or a little weak as a child?
Does sugar make children hyper?give my 4 year old niece a chocolate muffin and you tell me
i dont think itactually the sugar making kids hyper it’s the candy. if you make a big deal about giving your kids sugar and they know that then they will most likely act hyper and crazy. when you dont make a big deal about candy being given then they probably will stop to. most kids like having an excuse to relax a bit and act crazy. also if you associate sugar with kids being hyper then you’re going to think anything they do is because of the sugar
Sugar does not make kids hyper, not even if they have ADHD or autism, or anything. Any “hyperactive” affect you see in your kid after they consume sugar or any acknowledged “crash” is a placebo effect on the PARENT not the child…
There is no evidence that sugar causes hyperactivity. I babysat 4 kids and saw no difference in hyperactivity after sugar consumption. And those who say “babysit MY child after eating sugar and you’ll find you are wrong” I know you are bluffing because you would not even give me the chance to babysit your children to prove your belief wrong. It is known that sugar can make you tired, not hyperactive, and that is not in any way a “crash” effect.
I can give your kid broccoli and say it is covered in sugar and you’ll believe your kid is more hyper. I have noticed kids more hyper at parties, outings, and events where sugar may be given, but never because you gave them a root-beer on a hot summer day.
So please research your facts because you say it does not occur. your “word” is not evidence, and misplaced “observations” does not count as evidence either. hear-say is just that, hear-say.
Also adults being more excited at parties is the same reason. that’s why sugar is never added to energy supplements like 5 hour energy, and also why diabetics with very high blood sugar levels are never hyperactive.
Bro… asking if sugar makes kids hyper is like asking does alcohol makes grown ups mental!
sugar is a poison look it up. what a silly question
If you agree with this, you have no idea about the chemical make up of sugar and how it reacts with the body. Sugar is a compound that is easily broken down into the body. Basically, sugar is in a form that it is able to make its way into the human blood stream in less than five minutes. Depending on the amount consumed, energy makes its way through the body rapidly as it takes little time for the compound to be broken down. Yes, sugar rushes are true and do make people hyper. This article is false.
I was hyper as a child but I lived off of peanut butter, which contains a lot of protein, and I didn’t calm down until I stopped eating so much peanut butter.
All I say is stick a whole bunch of kids in a room, give them all candy and see what happens!(smiley face)
Sugar it bad for 40 years of age but not bad for child but always avoid extra sugar to everyone.
Sugar does not make children hyper.
Give my son frosties for breakfast and watch what happens…..
Problem is that if you want to set out to prove something like this it’s all too easy to make the test give you the result you want.
These people should try living in the real world – there’s no substitute for experience.
12? Really? That’s just not enough cases to determine a definitive answer. Also I have 2 boys and there is no sleeping at night when they get a hold of sugar to close to bedtime.
it’s not sugar so much as caffine
Sugar is however, bad for your teeth though. Makes you gain weight etc. So there are some negatives for you at any rate.
Youtube – The Skinny on Obesity – Dr Ludwig, MD Pediatric Metabolism, there are 4 8-9 minute segments – brings it down to ‘our’ level. There is also another 90 minute lecture at the Univ of CA – it is VERY detailed on how our bodies process fructose. And last but not least, Yahoo! had a story last week on how sugar dumbs down our children. All the best
Sugar is bad it makes Americans fat, so no it doesnt make you hyper, just fat
i don’t care what you say, but i have a friend who drank a whole can of coke last year, and if he was isn’t hyper, then i don’t know what it is; he was spinning and screaming, and whacking us with his coat, and singing “i’m a barbie girl” out loud.
i strongly agree that it does. straight sugar not only hypes kids up but parents as well. mtn dew and to much kandy is a myth. pixy sticks however is close enough to straight sugar that it will hype you up.
Coke has caffeine in it, though. In fact the vast majority of soft drinks do–I can’t drink caffeine and I have a hard time finding anything carbonated that I can drink, because with a few exceptions (Fanta), almost all of them contain some amount of caffeine. Sometimes much more than coffee.
Having said that, sugar even makes ME feel hyper, and it’s been a decade since I was in Jr. High.
yes
Sugar makes everyone hyper!! My little brothers would bring out their Halloween candy to their friends and all hell will break loose. When I have pop I get super weird and not sure why… I gave my step dad a sugared energy drink one day and he was making stupid sounds the rest of the day and laughing about everything.
the hyperactivity that parents undoubtedly observe is probably a result of the children getting excited about the fact that they are getting a treat or something that they are not regularly given… this is the same hyperactivity you see when you tell your children they are going to Disneyland or chucky cheese… its not the actual food that is making them hyper just they are excited for getting it
well i give my daughter any candy but only 2 times a weeks
I can’t believe some of these answers….Yes yes yes sugar makes children hyper…What’s wrong with you people…..It’s energy…Your body burns that sugar, for energy…..Dr.terry
well, Im thirteen and i can tell you sugar is stinkin awesome!!! I still get really hyped up, so hyped up that I laugh without breathing!!! Of course, lots of kids have different reactions, some with super sugar problems so they go bouncing off the wall with a single reeses, and some that can control the sugar from halloween and the caffeine from a red bull! everyone has their hype up limit!!! =DDDDDDDD
This is completely inaccurate. Gratz on becomming a dad, but you should really do more research into this. I have two relatives, one with autism, another with ADHD – give either of those sugar and try babysitting them for the night. Then you’ll correct yourself.
Does a bear —- in the woods?
I concur that sugar is bad for a human genome, absolutely. So are alot of things. SUGAR-FREE is aspartame and it, along with soduim benzoate with your chinese or most anything now MSG
Sodium allows things to penetrate the blood=brain barrier and, literally, eat your brain. Please check your labels and you may find Agave Nectar or (less processed) raw sugar to be more of an advantage. Sugar does not make you fat….a poor diet makes you fat.
TYVM
PEACE AND NAMASTE
noo give them tons of it they will get high then pass out soo techincally they get more sleepy time. thanks!
- a significant american mother
That’s why they call it a sugar rush…
YES it makes people, babies, animals, everything hyper!
Every time my son eats a cookie, he proves this study wrong again and again.
Kids getting “hyper” when eating sugar is nothing more than a combination of placebo effect, reactions to parents who tell them they will get hyper for eating sugar, and perception of parents who are looking for hyper behavior after sugar is eaten.
I know the answer, from years and years of raising my own kids, and plenty of others as well, it is not a myth, sugar is a poison, it is not good for kids, and it makes them get high blood sugars, then dips even lower, many times causing more confusion, and bad actions. It is a ploy by the sugar producing products to call it a myth, and I don’t have to read others comments to know the facts, or medical/scientific facts It is bad, and unhealthy for all people in most cases. NOT A MYTH! I have had “hands on” evidence.
Actually any amount of sugar reduces immunity so it should not be taken in excess
It doesn’t matter how much evidence to show “Sugar=Hyper” is false, no one will ever believe this, because they *know* better. I’ve tried for years to no avail.
It never made me hyper as a child. It really just depends on the child.
I have a little brother ,age 3, and sometimes I give him a large chocolate for his birthday. He ate it in one go and became sick.It makes you sick if you have TOO much but it has different effects on different people so you don’t know.Once I had a my whole bag of candy after I went trick or treating and I was totally relaxed.I did vomit 5 mins later but I had loads. It’s caffeine probably.
Hello, parents who keep seeming to say “Give my kid sugar and see what happens”. Maybe you should try something. Take your child to the store, and buy him/her some candy that is completely sugar free. Tell them they can have the whole thing when they get home. I will be surprised if they arent’ hyper.
no it doesn’t but you shouldn’t really be feeding children pop and other sugary drinks when their that young anyway.
I think we’ve taken biology here. Sugar is a quick short-term instant energy booster. That’s why many find themselves energy-boosted after chugging/eating sugar (especially with caffeine too!).
Same as coffee.
In Brazil, children as young as 3-year-old drink coffee and have no adverse efect;
Sugar pushes up energy levels quickly. with this they drop quickly too. I don’t think sugar necessarily makes children hyperactive. I’m hyperactive and have a sweet tooth. I avoid a lot of sweets because of certain colourants and some crisps. It’s the colourants that send me hyper. Parents presume it’s the sugar because it’s easy to blame. sugary drinks generally contain some sort of colourant. its all fake food. it’s all not needed. in small children it does though because their bodies can’t handle it. it just overwhelmes the senses.
instead of giving children diabetes give them fresh fruit
fresh fruit tasstes sweet bc there is sugar in the fruit but cane sugar elevates the childs blood sugar dramatically
we experience this as hyperactivity
sugar can become addictive
ween the kids with ripe fruit and deny them soda
the sugar most soda’s use is a chemical called hi-fructose corn syrup wich is not natural and our bodies don’t know how to metabolize it so it’s stored as fat in the liver
I think it depends on the child. I have 5 and the 3 youngest go hyper off of sugar or caffine but my two oldest dont change at all and have always been that way even when young. So I think each kid is different. I have also been told that if your kid has ADHD caffine calms them down but again it depends on the kid. I have 2 with ADHD and only one calms down, the other hypes up and they are both boys.
I’ve always understood this to be a self fufilling prophecy. Kids are “hyper” or energetic whether or not they are fed sugar, it’s just how they are. If a parent believes sugar will make them hyper, then they’ll probably believe it was the sugar when the kid runs all over the place.
One of the studies you mentioned seemed to touch upon this, where parents rate their children as more energeti after having consumed what they believed was a sugary drink, even though it was sugar-free.
Today I found out that sugar does not make kids hyper. In fact, it has been proven in numerous studies that it doesn’t affect their behavior at all.
In one such study, it was found that mothers who think their kids have been given sugar (even though their kids haven’t been given any), will almost always say their kids are acting hyper. On the flip-side, if they think their kids haven’t been given sugar (even if they have in actuality), they will almost always say their kids are acting normal; even though in both cases there is no actual discernible difference of behavior being observed between the two. It’s almost all in the parent’s head.
“Almost”, you say? Interestingly, if the child believes they have been given sugar and they believe that sugar will make them hyper, some children will act more hyper. But this again is all in their head. If they believe they haven’t been given sugar, even though they’ve been given loads, these kids will report no change in how they feel and will act normal. If they are given no sugar, but they think they’ve been given lots of sugar, they will often report feeling a “sugar rush” and act hyper. This is more or less just the mysterious placebo effect in action on a small percentage of these kids.
SugarOn the other hand, caffeine will absolutely make a good percentage of kids hyper. So while many parents attribute the hyperactivity in kids that often follows drinking a lot of soda as being caused by sugar, it is actually generally the caffeine doing the work.
In the end though, excessive amounts of processed sugars is bad for kids (and adults too!), in a variety of ways. Best to stay away from them as much as possible outside of natural sugars found in fruits and the like; pro-tip: corn syrup = bad too.
Although, according to recent medical studies, it’s not entirely clear yet whether corn syrup is worse for you than sugar, but it is clear that both are pretty bad for you at the levels most people eat on a daily basis, moderation of course being the key for healthy in-take in both cases.
On the other hand, maybe it’s best to just not eat anything at all; probably the best way to avoid eating unhealthy things
well if u ask me, then yes because it has 25% vitamins and 75% sugar so yes it would make ur children hyper and I know because i am a science teacher.
Yes the scientific community has NO IDEA what they are talking about. You know this because you said so. Sure they did double blind studies, but what does that prove. I mean if it says you are wrong then CLEARLY the scientific community is wrong. Just like I know the moon is made of cheese. If science says otherwise that just PROVES science doesn’t know anything. It can’t be me.
Please reference to sugar and its side effects this is to long to post here but go read this, source google:
http://www.unhinderedliving.com/sugardanger.html
No. They disproved that very recently.
It is called sugar high for a reason. Let me guess since it did not work for those it means it is not true that is the problem with studies a lot of it deals with location of the test subject, age, weight, and a lot of other factors. People get hyper after consuming a lot of sugar in a short amount of time just look back at all the people that seen it happen.
What is surety of the conclusion of recent study? after sometimes some other study based on another research and reveals a new conclusion that sugar does makes children hyper-active! as per my GK, sugar is base of producing glucose in our body that’s why it makes energetic a human being for time being….so I think when it can energizes an adult’s activity power, means it can also makes a child hyper-active.
Yes it does. and it’s addictive.
It won’t make them hyper, but it interferes with their brain development. If you want smart kids, a diet full of sugar is a pretty stupid idea.
All my life, although I have eaten or drunk things with sugar in them, I have never gotten hyper because of sugar.
I’m still just a kid, and still I do not get hyper from things like candy or drinks or just plain sugar.
Maybe it’s an assumption we make – as we grow up, parents often tell us not to eat sugar as it will make us hyper, or they tell others not to give us sugar and we overhear and because of this we believe that by consuming sugar we become hyper.
I believe that this is the case, like it says in the article, it probably has a placebo effect.
More propaganda by some ‘scientist’ who is paid to make false scientific reports.
Just like growth hormones are not causing teen girls who are less than 14 to have breasts DDD. Sure, yeah I believe all the scientists. *sarcasm
it depends on the child some children might get hyper from the sugar but others might be completly controled after they have sugar and not get hyper
I’ve never gotten hyper off of caffeine or sugar, I’ve gotten sick from excess consumption but never hyper.
Hyper than what??
im 15 and i find if i drink coke it still makes my hyper :L
Sugar has no effect on my 22 month old son. However, it makes me hyper even in small quantities. It always has.
I was told by a doctor that surprisingly its not sugar that makes children hyper its food coloring that makes them hyper. Parents think oh no there kids going to be hyper after eating a cupcake it all the coloring in the cupcake that makes them hyper.
I have ADHD. You know what the pills are made out of? Some sugar. That’s what the doctor told my mum, at least. But caffiene is a whole ‘nother story. But sugar kind of calms me, for some queer reason….
Sorry, I have to disagree. Son and both grandsons are very sensitive to sugar. Top off a nutritious meal with a cinnamon roll or dish of ice cream and watch them go ballistic! No caffeine, no exterior stimulus. They just start talking faster, bouncing off the walls, unable to sit still.
Apparently, when children have sugar they do not become more hyper, Scientists have studied this and supposedly what actually occurs is that the parents become more irrational, and think their child’s behaviour is more hyper, where as whats actually happening is that they are far more sensitive because they ASSUME that their child IS becoming more hyper. Psychology.
Yes, it is certainly food for thought.
Especially since my 3 sons were very hyperactive until we stopped purchasing sugar coated cereal.
Sugar isn’t the cause for ADHD, but sugar highs and crashes are real. Regardless, children shouldn’t be consuming the amount of sugary junk that a lot of them get, and neither should adults.
Sugar doesn’t make children hyper, scientists have proved that what makes children hyper is the E-numbers and additives in the products.
Sugar itself does give you energy, but not “bouncing off the walls” energy. It takes a while for the sugar to be converted into usable energy called ATP, and is then dispersed into the body as needed.
In (most) pop however there is caffeine which is an addictive drug that will give you a false feeling of energy.
However, even in caffeine free pop there can be as much as 50 grams of sugar in a can. Which in a small body of a child would produce way to much energy.
So basically sugar will only give a ton of unwanted energy in large doses.
Parents, stop using the “you don’t have children, so you don’t know”. The children are getting a reaction off YOU. If YOU think they’re going to start acting up, then they will.
Want to know something else that will blow your mind? Sugar doesn’t rot your teeth! Not as much as potato starch from crisps, anyway. When I become a parent, I am not giving them any of that artificial crap, because that is significantly worse for them.
Sugar gives energy… great job there, geniuses.
However, hyperactivity is a change in MENTAL patterns, not a burst of energy; your child’s not a car…
Tired children can become irritable and go on hyperactivity rampages because it’s all to do with their brain processes.
When you eat sugar, you receive quick energy which either you utilise to prolong periods of hyperactivity, or it just gets sat on.
don’t believe it at all.
it makes kids FLIPPIN HYPER. end of discussion.
Just to clarify, caffeine doesn’t make people hyper. All it does is temporarily block the receptors that receive adenosine (the chemical which causes tiredness). So all it does is stops tiredness and muscular fatigue, instead of causing hyperactivity.
see key word british doctor, why does a foriegn person
have to be the one to correct us. you hardly ever hear a american doctor discovered this or thought of this it’s always a foreignier. too so many american people are just dumb and lazy. what’s to be proud of anymore? what that we let other peoples come to our land and take over? what that we can’t juggle our own finances without the help of outsiders? what is thier to be proud of anymore. we don’t stand for anything anymore. and god we trust ,really? wow i might as well live some where else because i just feel like we are look over.
Sugar increase is connected to ADHD and other childrens problems., It does not make money for scrips to tell the truth, but over 65% of this problem related to diet and sugar!
My son has ADHD and yes his doctors have told me not to allow him to have sugar. Sugar can make children hyper according to what my son’s doctors have said.
Actually, sugar can and can’t make kids hyper. It doesn’t do much to the average child accept add on weight, although it’s kind of rare, it can with some kids.
i don know….
What if the sugar-free substitute placebo is what caused the hyperactivity?
Sugar is the simplest form of carb and therefore provides a strong and temporary rush of energy just like other simple carbs, thus making children feel “hyper”. Now if you consume complex carbs like whole wheat, it takes longer for your body to convert that in energy, thus they are good for your body, more filling and have much more nutrients than simple carbs like white sugar, white flour, starch. SUGAR DOES GIVE YOU A RUSH OF ENERGY!!
I have been trying to get my friend to understand this for quite some time now. Shes always telling me not to give him sugar cause it makes him hyper and every time I tell her its a myth. Took him for lunch let him have a powerade and then got some ice cream. Brought him back, he went and worked in his garden and then went and watched Tv. She told me thanks for not giving him sugar so he’ll be hyper. I informed her again that its a myth and then what he had while with me. She doesn’t tell me that anymore.
Holy crap, great timing –
I was just thinking about how sugar actually makes me more tired!
yes, sugar does make kids hipper
I think it has to do with children not playing in the streets anymore. Children don’t want their nap because they have their entire day mapped out on a strict schedule. They want to go out and play, get something called sunshine and get some exercise. Instead of being cooped up in a house eating sugar, watching animé and told to shut up every ten seconds, that’d make anyone restless. Just look at old people!
Why don’t people want to admit that sugar is like a drug it converts you into an addict for sweets. Take candy, any soda drink that contais caffeine and sugar , take chocolate and other additives made with sugar and you will see these children be so hyperactive that they will tear down the place. For those who don’t believe try not giving your children anythig sweet for a week and see what happens. Sugar is controlling our children. Try putting a healthy plate of vegetables or salads in the table and you will see the results. Remember people we have a crisis of overweight children, diabetics, uncontrolable hyperactivity that do lead to all this problems we are actually having, junk foods are taking over and the sugar industry is very healthy.
my favorite food is fruit
sorry to say this but i never got hyper with sugar as a child or adult..and i have ti agree with the person who stated that most of these are opinions and not facts…kids get hyped up as a mind thing its mental.someone told them they would be hyper if they consumed it.sugar is bad anyways to even let kids have too much..all this adhd shit is fake i was told i have it but i dont just another way for a quack to make money by telling you the reason y your child dont pay attention is hes got adhd…your child dont pay attention becasuse e or she doesnt want to period..its called being a brat and misbehaving.ad yes i have a child so i know and i was also a child myself not too long ago
sorry but all these aleged reactions to the ugar compound is just because your friends choose to act crazy..
i have a wonderful solution to this..give 100 kids sugar products at the same time you are giveing 100 kids non sugar products but tell them it has sugar in it an see what happends..you will prolly see a bunch of alleged hyper kids that consumed sugar running around thinking they are hyper…and on the other side where the non sugar product was given you will see some kids acting hyper because they only thought it had sugar.then tell the non sugar cosumeing children they didnt have sugar and you will see how their hyperness turns sour.meaning just a mind thing
Sugar does make kids hyper, I can attest. BUT one thing that is regularly overlooked are the food coloring and additives that make kids go nuts. Anything with Red 40, Blue Lake 5, Yellow what ever the heck is going to be bad for your kids AND make them hyper. They are unnatural sources put into processed foods aimed at kids. Keep it natural, keep it healthy and it will reduce these issues. Avoid preservatives and food coloring at all costs.
Well I’m no expert but i think that they did a test or something and the conclusion was that sugar does not make kids hyper.Ask any doctor and they’ll tell you.Do I agree with the conclusion? No.But is it a fact….I’m not all that sure. -_-
I totally Disagree. I am a father of a 2 yr old and trust me, sugar has a tremendous effect on my son. 4 hr difference. If we want him to sleep at 10, the last bit of sugar is given at 6. I know how it works. Came up with the formula over sleepless nights. If you say sugar has no effect on kids, then there definately are some exceptions.
It’s is natural, as sugar contains higher amount of calorie, which when being digested starts burning enough calorie inside the body, causing huge outflow of energy.
As a teen, i think kids just do it for attention.
Best to stay away from the sugar cuz it’ll prob. cause all kinds of stuff that will lead to permanent damage or DEATH
stfu sugar.
Of course sugar doesn’t make you hyper, you idiots, its been a well-known fact for years. It just does have a placebo affect which causes the hyperness. It has been proven, over and over again, that sugar doesn’t cause sugar highs or crashes, and that they don’t exist, it is just people thinking they do so they get a sugar high, then they crash, without it being a result of anything.
Sugar is still bad for you though, it may be a potential cause of cancer, causes obesity, and many other things.
All of you parents saying that sugar causes highs, you are the worst, as you are adults and should be educated enough to know IT IS YOUR FAULT FOR MAKING THEM THINK IT CAUSES THEM TO BE CRAZY, SO THEY USE THAT AS AN EXCUSE TO BECOME CRAZY.
Have any of you idiots ever given a child, say an apple before bed? Do they go right to sleep still? If they do, then there is your proof.
Oh and just to let you know I’m a neurologist with a P.H.D in neurology, and I know enough about the brain to know sugar doesn’t cause any of the high and low effects that you imbeciles assume it causes.
i eat alot of sugar and i’am never hyper, i think.
@lucy Lol, sounds like my best friend. And he acts like that even when he’s not on sugar!
P.s Where hoping to get him tested soon.
the only reason candy would give you a little energy is if your tired from hunger, you can eat as much candy as you want but all you’ll end up with is a tummy ache.
@Nathan
No neurologist would call people imbeciles because they believe something most people do. Also, it’s PhD (with either no dots, or two). Still, sugar highs are psychological, and not somatic.
Higher blood sugar does not ‘magically give more energy to your cells’. Your cells use only what the need, the rest is toxic.
Yes Sugar Indeed May Make Children Or Adults Hyper . It Boost Your Energy .
it really depends on if you have been consistently, if not~ your child will most likely flip out
um yes it can i large amounts
Our bodies are magnificent machines. They deal with things like sugar and other stuff that we put into them in a way that gets rid of everything that’s excessive. Sometimes that’s by storing the good parts as fat somewhere in the body, but usually by eliminating it through our #1 and #2 methods. People who are prone to hyperactivity or attention deficiency syndromes are no different.
However, our minds are even more magnificent. They can take our environment and get our bodies to react to the environment. That includes allowing our bodies to get over stimulated, especially when there is ADHD involved. And it does affect others – almost an infection (but without viruses or germs or bacteria).
So, yes, kids at parties with lots of sugary stuff consumed will get ‘hyperactive’, but it’s their reaction to the other kids that makes it so – have a calm party, and everyone stays ‘calm’, even the most hyperactive kids. Have a highly exciting one, and all the kids will act hyperactive, even if there is only ‘healthy’ food and drink!
Sugar Makes A Child Hyper For 30 Second And Then It Makes Them Tired….
I never found sugar impacted my son being hyper, BUT it’s simply not good to give kids the notion it’s good to eat much of it. No harm with treats now and then, but it shouldn’t be part of daily diet and there should be a balanced diet. I personally think that people get too whacked out on both extremes of this issue. Just shoot for a balance and use some common sense.
This seems to be an argument that will never be settled, If, in fact, the research is true – and sugar does not cause hyperactivity, then all the mothers in my early years (60′s) have been lied to. Furthermore, as a teacher of middle school students, I definitely beg to differ. My homeroom class in the mornings are not the same people after lunch. There has to be some connectivity to the hyperness I see and hear when they tear down the halls after lunch. What might be a contributing factor is – chocolate! It might be the caffein,,,,but certainly – there is something that computes in the kids I see and know from early morning and the difference after they have returned from lunch.
Energy no hyper YES I know becouse me as a teen gets hyper from to much sugar. I watch my nieghbors kids some times and i can tell when they have had sugar bouncing off the wall lol xD i feel that a lot of adhd cases could be alemanated if parent put away the sugar and caffeni my mom never ;le us have soda except on special occasions and the fisrt time i had caffeni was like my 8th or 9th b-day and my granny gave it to me (A couple of spoons of coffe in milk) I had a freind who was ADHD and you would see him with can of dr.pepper in each pocket and candy and cola in hand If you start out understanding that entertainment is not just tv but also runing playing getting a few scraches now and then having a runny nose and being happy whit what they have ^^
Dave, anyone who thinks hyperactivity (as in ADHD) is a myth, and all you need to do is smack your kids more to remedy it, has never been around a truly hyperactive kid. My son, and two of my three nephews were ‘diagnosed’ by their school as being ADHD. Why? Because my oldest nephew had it, so they assumed the rest did. They were WAY off. Keep in mind, none of them had issues with behaviour. The nephew who was truly ADHD was unable to concentrate or to sit still for any length of time. He wasn’t a brat. He wasn’t belligerent. He never threw tantrums. My sister fought putting him on drugs until he was in third grade, and it negatively affected his school work. She agreed to try him on the lowest dose, only during the school year and for him, it was a miracle. For the others…well, the school got an ear full from both of us, and all of them had no problems whatsoever. People DID have ADHD back in the day. They just had to find coping skills to overcome it, or…they suffered for it and had to struggle their whole lives. People who say things like ‘parents taught patience and swatted them on the behind if they misbehaved’, are clueless about kids with this disorder. It’s not all about standing on top of your kid, not to mention…the overwhelming response I hear from any news story about a kid doing just about anything, is ‘I spank my kid and blah blah blah’, so APPARENTLY people still do that. And…here’s a newsflash for ya…we still misbehaved as kids, just like kids do now. There are SO many other reasons why kids are doing crazier things now. It’s not all about parents who don’t hit their kids.
actually, what sugar affects is the brain. In multiple studies using lab rats it was found that the consuption of sugar decreased the animal’s ability to learn in as little as two months. It has been a noted scientific fact that large ammounts of sugar will decrease your brains ability to create BDNF. http://olsonnd.com/what-sugar-does-to-your-brain/
Sugar can give them a rush of energy at first, then they get a “sugar low” (tired) after a few minutes. It is best to limit candy in a child’s diet but not to completely remove it because that is plain unfair. But, parents PLEASE do not give your child anything that contains artificial coloring!!! It can do permanent damage to them. They have been linked to adhd and mental/ behavioral diseases. I suggest you google food coloring to know more a about it (wikipedia tends to make things seem less bad though). Also, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS NOT SUGAR. It is also very bad for your kids.
sugar makes you sick because it weakens your immune system.
“However, the results from at least 12 double blind randomized controlled trials have shown that there is no noticeable difference in a child’s behavior regardless of how much sugar they have consumed.”
How about you get some meta-analysis done? Sugar is a vague term, could you go into the specifics of what kind of sugar?
Think of it this way, some fuels are combusted more efficiently. Likewise some sugars are metabolised more efficiently which may lead to greater work done. The specifics are in the type of carbohydrates though.
Likewise, those kids may have a different metabolism to say, others. We already know that sports drinks work, so I don’t think we can all accept that suddenly the sugar content has no effect on our body. Ofcourse there may be another factor, but equally we could have misunderstood sugar entirely.
I hope you understand. Please don’t follow this BMJ article religiously as it’s originally made for doctors. Unless you are a doctor, you may not be able to implement such into your lifestyle without negative symptoms due to the fact that you do not have the clinical knowledge.
Here’s some food for thought. Roughly 11 trials showed that people may get autism from the MMR vaccine (mumps, measles and rubella). This was published in the Lancet (THE MOST prestigious medical journal).
Later the people who said that these results were conclusive were SACKED. Every other research carried out showed NO CORRELATION. You are doing the same mistake. 12 trials is not enough. If you want you can look up the same case.
Agreed the effect is psychological. Kids love sweets, and the sugary taste stimulates their senses, which can make them more active in some cases. Of course this would work as well with artificial sweeteners of the kids couldn’t taste the difference.
I don’t believe that, because sugar, have many calories and calories give energy, the more energy kids have the more active they are!!
you want a suprise
once your kid is i would say 1-2 years old give your kid koolaid of any color because there so young it will pass right thru them ^.^ and it will change there diaper colors and yes sugar can make kids hyper
Seems most people are forgetting the difference between complex and processed sugar. Easiest simple explanation is processed sugar blasts the system with a surge in comparison to complex sugar which is slowly run through the digestive system. Complex sugar being unprocessed like the natural sugars you get from bananas and several other healthy fruits and food products.
I used to do a fair bit of hillwalking with my ex. we started taking our boy when he was about 4.. If he ever gave up half way saying he was too tired we would give him a tin of coca cola (the only time he got this crap) and stood back and watched him go..
well my niece is well just turned 4 and every time she eats ice cream or candy’s or chocolate she becomes rebel and starts doing her traumas i dont know if that is normal but we try not to give her sweets as much because she wont listen and ignore and starts being rude……???
Every child needs a certain amount of sugar in their diet. My sister didn’t give my nephew enough and he kept getting constipated and as everyone knows, its painful, especially for babies and toddlers. Whether its putting two/three small spoons of sugar into some lukewarm water in his/her bottle or whatever other ways u think of, a child needs sugar. It doesn’t make them hyper as long as u dont give too much, its the caffeine that does that.
Wouldn’t trust a study done by Brits, given the truly dismal educational system they have.
I’ll believe the results when repeated a few times elsewhere.
And my experience with thousands of kids tells me different.
OMG, I feel stupider for having read the fist paragraph.
@michael lala, if your spelling wasn’t so poor, I might be inclined to believe your statistics.
Yes sugar can make your kid hyper but not all kids get hyper from sugar and some kids no matter how old they get still get hyper from sugar.
I’m sorry, while it does seem that sugar revs the kids up, it’s hard just to ignore a all the studies. I do see two other reasons why so many parents could see all the anecdotal evidence. 1. Sugar, especially in soft drinks often comes with caffene. Of course this would make the kids a little buzzy. 2. Sugar makes kids happy (adults to). This would of course create a higher level of energy. But of course I’m a little skeptical of the studies.
I’m sure the processed food companies will be glad to hear this. It’ll make it easier for them to sell the “Frankenfood” products they load with sugar because it’s cheap, addictive, and makes any food taste good no matter how bad it is.
this seems to be a “new” thing as I don’t recall it making my kids hyper, however I do notice my grandkids bieng a bit hyper when they have had fizzy drinks or after eating sweets at weekends. perhaps it is something or aflavouring in ingredients or maybe down to individual children
Sugar (alone) actually slows me down -_-
yahoo! us had a story least week on how sugar made kids dumb! We have increased sugar production and obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are ALSO UP. Could there be a connection? watch You Tubes Dr Ludwig, MD pediatric metabolism expert – “The Skinny on Obesity” 4 chapters each 8-9 minutes – WELL worth your time – as a new parent or grandparent. Peace!
The kids probably think that they are going to be hyperactive because they are eating sugar. The ingredients in the pixie stix may not make them hyper physically, but it may make them hyper mentally. So when they eat sugar they think they’re going to get hyper so they start to get hyper about the sugar
It depends on the child, some get really hyper with a small mint or piece of gum. Though, most children in America tend to get hyper quickly.
White processed sugar makes me high due to its lack of natural vitamins and minerals. In my opinion these vitamins and minerals are pulled from my brain which allows my body to process the sugar. My brain needs sugar to function properly. When I eat unprocessed sugar with all the natural ingedients left in, my brain functions well and I do not get high or hyper. The unprocessed sugar is brown and tends to get “chunky” or you notice it sticks together and does not necessarily pour smoothly. In my opinion that kind of sugar helps me think better and stay healthier. It is more expensive initially but is cheaper in the long run. Being healthy, priceless. I have only been on the planet 70 years and do not have all the answers but I have developed some strong opinions.
Yes sugar does make you hyper during cellular respiration when oxygen and sugar combine to make energy for your cells. Yes it gives you energy, and yes it also makes you hyper.
It makes no difference between eating a bowl of corn flakes and eating an equal level of carbohydrates from a candy bar. Carbohydrates are carbohydrates. The whole “sugar makes you hyper” can apply to any carbohydrate. The rest of it is the combination of a placebo thinking you are going to get energized from sugar and the old wives’ tale.
Think of kids eating pancakes in the morning. Most of the energy is coming from the pancakes, not the sugary syrup. Or at lunch. Most of the energy is not coming from the sugary soda, but the carbohydrate enriched food. Now when a kid eats a meal’s worth of carbohydrates from a bunch of candy or a few cans of soda? They are going to get as hyper as eating a meal.
The science for years has said it.
No it does not! It is just a stupid made of word for kids to have a problem. They did a research with veges and sugars, switched the two, and then made kids believe that veges were sugar loaded and vise versa. It turned out to be all in their minds, so it is a stupid BS word!
it makes kids hyper if they are allergic to sugar,
some people think it does because the eat sugar at a party or somewhere where they would be hyper anyway!
but no it does not make them hyper unless they are allergic to it.
but it can make them sick, so don’t give your precious child too much!!
Its better then diet drinks since they have aspartame as most artifical sweeteners that is a proven killer.
As a a kid, I had ADHD, this was before the term had been thought up yet. My Mother was told by doctors back then that sugar, or the lack thereof, would not have any effect on my behavior, nor did it. As a parent of ADD and ADHD children, I have found the same thing. People with TRUE hyperactivity disorder are not affected by sugar. P/O the problem is that Ritalin, and similar drugs, have a positive effect on children who are not ADHD or ADD as well as those who are.
BTW, it takes a brain scan (EEG) to really know whether a child is ADD or ADHD or not. But most insurance programs don’t want to pay for that when drugs work either way.
will of corse children can become hyper its like a wined-up toy that won’t stop until the key in the back stop spining
Yes, it is believed it does, the number for carbo-chemical the sugar has can transfer and either work on jumping around the stomach or just the sweetness of it.
If a child or young people usually show symptoms of hyperglycemia after consuming sugary food/drink, it indicates presence of Type1 diabetics.
I had a theory, sadly the research may have proved me wrong. But here it is:
Alcohol turns to sugar in the blood, which sometimes make the drinker hyper.Since sugar is already sugar,it is just skipping a step.
yes it does
DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely think that it does. Though I often think it may be that kids receive different reactions. If a child often has sugar, it may not affect them as much to have it. But with a child that hardly has sugar on a daily basis, you can expect to see some weird behavior because their bodies aren’t used to the sugar. Hope this helps
Sugar Blues is a book by William Dufty back in 1975. It clearly confirms the reality that sugar is an instant energy source and of course, can “speed kids up” as well as anyone else. But, like quick energy sources, it also dissipates quickly, requiring the need for more sugar to keep up the energy, hence the addictive quality. This ain’t brain-surgery, folks. Refined sugar corrupts the appetite for naturally sweet (healthy) foods.
Well its not the Sugar that makes them hyper its the myth and that just goes to their head
Of course it does. The artificial colors & preservatives do bad things as well. It is not just the hyper-activity, it is also causing “the dumbing down” of our kids, as well as obesity, childhood diabetes, & hypertension.
We all need to get off the “engineered food”, & get back to “real food”.
See: “The Finegold Diet”.
Sugar doesn’t really make children hyper, some children think that sugar makes them hyper, so whenever they eat/drink things that contain sugar, they become hyper.
Oh my gosh.
No. It doesn’t make your child hyper – you imagine that it will make your child hyper, and their behaviour appears more exaggerated and hyper, to you.
Also, if you start telling your kid to calm down two minutes after they’ve had sugar, then you’re just setting up a self-fulfilling prophecy in which the kid acts out more because they think “What the heck, I’m already being told to calm down, and I’m not doing anything!”
I’m not saying sugar is good, of course it’s not, but it doesn’t make you hyper. I mean, if it did, then all sorts of things would make your kids hyper, like strawberries.
Well I don’t know who did this study and how many kids they did this on but i do know that when my 2 year old son has had candy. He is super hyper after he has something sweet. I know this for a fact. You can believe this if you want and give your child candy but you will soon learn the difference after
It would appear that sugar does not directly affect a child’s level of hyperactivity. It would also appear that since sugary treats are often associated with parties, excited adults and generally a more energized atmosphere, kids do in fact get conditioned to become more energized when the sugary treat is reintroduced. The Pavlov effect. So I say both sides of this debate are correct and no need to bicker about it. If a parent says their kid gets hyper after eating cookies, then it’s probably true, just not for the reasons they think. If another parent says their kid doesn’t get hyper from sugar, I’m sure that is also true. I am also sure those parents are probably fairly boring.
Starting one summer back in the 1970′s.,. I have noticed a number of times since then !! MOSTLY in the 1980′s How even if it’s just a short time afterwards !?! & or depending on the amount given !?! “I’ve seen the affect that took place a number of times!! & YES SUGAR CAN !! & or DOES make kids hyper !! But only at times!?! /CERTAIN TIMES I guessI had a two or three part story for this one !!! but it’ll just be seen as MY OPINION anyway.!?! ;-[} r”R”r;a;wWwrRr,`’.
It is the placebo effect. Children get excited as this is a food that they really love and they are just excited to have / have had it. They do not go ‘hyper’ unless you are talking on medical terms with conditions such as diabetes.
YES IT DOSE BUT ONLY IF THEY EAT IT ALOT
WELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SUGAR MAKES KIDS HYPER
If these so called experts are parents they must be completely disconnected with their kids
whats more it may in fact not be an every kid every where situation but MANY kids are extremely sinsative to sugar and this should be regulated
Sugar does make children hyperactive, children need alot a energy for daily activities but they should only consume in small amounts.
I’m ADHD and sugur does not even seem to have any effect on me. I’m just as hyper as I was 15 minutes ago.
well for me mam/sir its not the sugar that makes them kids hyper i guess its the taste you know kids love sweets and it makes them happy and starts there good mood and expect they would play alot coz of there good mood kids be like more sweets more fun thats why.thats just what i think hehe..
hope it helps.. .
I have 4 children I believe some children can get hyper from sugar but some dont I would say just do not give them sugar near bedtime if you are going give it give it earlier in the day but I wouldnt worry about it giving your child sugar once in a while is okay just in moderation . Being a uptight parent just stresses the child out and you let your kid be a kid just like you were once
Sugar makes anyone hyper lol
I have seen sugar highs and crashes clear as day!
We gave my gf’s child a dried date at 5am once and she was bouncing around for ages lol (she was a lil baby at the time) but I know that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.. she did look REALLY hyper though.. my gf actually said her eyes looked weird lol
Maybe it depends on the child….. o.O
yes, kids get hyper when they have sugar.don’t give your kid too much suger or she/he will turn fat and hyper. when they are older, they’re not going to be the same.hyper is not something u wanna see.
Actually children with ADHD will get hyper off of sugar instead of caffeine.
Do your own experiment!Put about 5 toddlers in a room and see what they do!
I do think some indivisuals have an allergic reaction to it.I know with myself, food coloring, sugar and caffeine,I can have a reaction. When I was younger it was worse. Now that I’m older,I can control my reaction better. But just like with anything, everyones body reacts differently to different things.Doctors are always changing things. One min.coffee is good.Next it’s not.Sometimes we must be our own doctor. We can read our bodies better then person or Phd.
Sugar makes some people hyperactive. Our bodies work in mysterious ways. What sugar’s effect on someone doesn’t mean it is also the effect on everybody else.
What a load of BULL!! As a teacher I can assure every person here that I see it quite often…..Children DO get hyper when given sugar.
What idiots (and I am sorry but as a scientist I can say that is what they are) like these seem to fail to realize is this…..when heavily controlled experiments do not align with what is seen in real world situations…..it is the controlled experiment that is most often not taking in all the facts.
Sugar does NOT make children hyper.
Yes, but it does make them fat, lazy & stupid.
i’ve little experience about effect of sugar and chocoloate on childerens.when my nephew eat some chocolate she sleep at least 2 or 3 hours later…!!
I have adult ADHD now, as a kid though I knew it wasn’t sugar that turned me into an uncontrollable child.
It was other things like the E numbers and caffeine (YAY!!! CAFFEINE!!!) in drinks that made it worse. At school I was always banned from drinking Coke ‘cos of the amount of E numbers in it, so I used to drink Pepsi instead (of course that has exactly the same effect but technically “it wasn’t Coke”, although the teachers did used to get annoyed when they saw me with it!)
I think though people automatically assume sugar as this is something that people with ADHD crave. I remember watching this TV show once where they banned a child with ADHD from having anything with sugar in it to control him, and they found him eating carpet – it turned out the glue that was used contained sugar in it (along with a lot of other nasty chemicals).
I think though the idea that sugar makes kids hyper is the same as people thinking that people with hayfever the hayfever will trigger when in a field of freshly mown grass, these people are ignorant of the conditions and don’t realise that it’s not just one trigger, it can be numerous ones, adhd can be triggered with all sorts of E numbers and caffeine, and yet sugar gets targetted, like hayfever can be triggered with loads of different pollens (I know as I have hayfever), and yet instantly everyone goes and blames just grass pollen.
I am a kid and i know that is you have 5 or more chrunchies in a row then you are deffinatly going to be hyper but even then it will only last 10 mins or so and my mum says as the parent its funny to watch
sugar does not make people hyper. i’ve seen many kids who get hyper when they get to eat sugar because their parents don’t usually allow them to.
it increases energy, sure, but it won’t make kids hyper. it’s like a kid has some sugar, you think “now s/he’s gonna be hyper” and the kid starts seeming more hyper to you because you’ve told your brain that the kid is more hyper.
Children are born with “historical energy” so sugar on top of that historical energy will make them hyper
It does make children hyper, when i was a kid, my mom brought 6 pixle sticks, so i tried six of them and got very energetic! i was actually hyper. sugar doesnt make you hyper but if it was pixle stick. it would make you very hyperthetic
I beg to differ with the British Medical Journal. My eldest grandson (at the age of 2) got into the Halloween candy and ate for an hour. He suddenly went hyper (not his nature). He began screaming and didn’t want anyone to touch him. He hid in a corner until he calmed down. It was horrific to watch.
No it is just a myth. Watch QI brilliant show AND you learn something new… I feel cheesy now. Basically parents will perceive it as to make them hyper because they already think it does due to being told it when they are younger, as people said before it would be artificial colourings or caffeine but not the sugar . Also I mean food is energy so either way after eating wouldn’t children have slightly more energy anyways…?
Sadly, you will soon find that children have energy reserves that you have long forgotten. Do they suck it from you at night? Are they siphoning it away and storing it? Who knows! However, there is utterly no need for them to have sugar in order for them to do a “wall of death” around your house and drive you to the brink of distraction by murdering each other, or you (in the case of the lone child). It’s not good for them, as it adds to tooth decay and can give them even more energy, but this makes no difference to their behaviour, as they were probably going to be that “hyper” anyway. Congratulations on becoming a father!! xx
yes
NO ITS DOES NOT!! IN FACT, IT MAKES KIDS CALM WELL AT LEAST 10+ KIDS!
Despite everyone saying it does, it realy depends on the one child. When I was little I could eat a whole bag of sugar filled candy and not be phased by it, but my cousin ,on the other hand, could eat one peice and go crazy.
It is a proven fact that sugar does not cause children to be hyper. According to numerous studies, sugar does not effect behavior of anybody at all. However, cafine makes kids hyperactive. Coffee is not the best thing to give a child unless they are old enough to handle thierselves behavior like an adult. Sugar will not effect your child.
I’ve always had a very strong feeling that giving kids pixie sticks doesn’t make them hyper because it’s sugar, it’s because we’re giving them something to eat called a pixie stick. What about that name doesn’t say, “You should no proceed to act like you’re on crack”?
We tell kids not to eat something because it will make them hyper so it gives them license to go ape when they do get a hold of the stuff.
yes.
For all good news there must be skeptics. Caffeine gets you hyper, not sugar. The reason why your kids get fat is because they don’t exercise enough, not because they have a lot of sugar in their system. The reason why you get childhood diabetes is because you don’t take care of the grease, and weight, and calories consumed in a day. It’s still not much about sugar. Steak has calories, and I am pretty sure that steak doesn’t have sugar.
Kids don’t get dumber with sugar. The fact that you believe that your children (or anyone else’s children) are slow is rather cliché and demeaning. Twenty years ago having attention deficiency was simply considered lack of effort. Today, it’s considered an illness. To me, it just means that your child’s not interested. We live in a judgmental society, and we have been carrying around our children and giving them what they want, instead of what’s good for them and their lives. Kids today are not revolutionary — they’re scared. They-re scared of being judged by people, by their own parents and “friends”! And let me tell you, I don’t think that The Finegold Diet will ever help anyone be smarter or stop being afraid of what’s out there. Sorry if I elaborated too much on this comment. I’ve known about sugar not affecting kids ever since I watched this one episode of House last year and did a little research. Now stop making your children unhappy and buy them the Sundae.
What age group are we talking about here? Most all “kids” have add or adhd due to all the energy they consume. This will later change in the “kids” life if he gets into drugs or depression kicks in. A candy stick with little amount of sugar won’t effect the “kid” at all do to the toddler allready being hyped up. Now, if you were to give those 12 individuals 4 candy sugar sticks then you will see a slight increase in thier allready “bouncing off the wall feeling.”
I works like this say a college student is purscribed to Adderall and has 3 exams and a paper to turn in. He takes his purscribed amount of adderall ( Stimulant) and goes about his business. Well 12:30 comes rolling by and the kid allready has take one exam and is about to walk to take the other exam. On the way there he starts to feel the Adderall “fade” he starts to panic because its a self dependent drug. He just so happens to carry the bottle in his backpack. Instead of taking just one Adderall he swallows two, to make sure that will get him through the day. The “fading” feeling the kid experienced was probably a tolerance to the drug issue, which means he needs to talk to his doctor to raise the Mg, because his receptors/transmitors in his brain have adapted to either A) the medication or B) They just neeed to come to an agreement on a Mg that will suite the students day and activities.
Like I said in the beginning Most “kids” are born with some form of ADhD or ADD (Attention Defecit Disorder) the first form is hyper deficit disorder. Usually “kids” will grow out of this stage when they start thinking about the other gender say a male thinking about a female. The males hormones will start kicking in and take effect. Which will slowly develope over time.
I can personaly attest that not only does a candy bar wake me up in the afternoon but after about an hour and a half or two I have a sugar crash. I have seen the same behaviour in my kids. The BMJ charges $30 for access to the article, but recent studies of metastudies like the one cited show that many of them are of poor quality and make dubious conclusions with faulty statistics. The author implies that all 12 studies were unanimous, but doesn’t actually say that. I find this article incredible and the author uncredible. Without reading the BMJ and the primary studies, I will have to reserve judgement on whether I am wrong., but my personal experience contradicts the assertion here.
I don’t view my personal experience as anecdotal since my observations have been over several years. (but I can not rule out a placebo or other psychological/ physiological effect, including confirmation bias (without further careful study).)
Are you kidding me?
I heard somewhere that scientists discovered that you only get hyper from sugar if you KNOW you are getting the sugar.
Do Bees make Honey?
Sugar doesn’t make you hyper actually. The reason they act hyper is because sugar is mostly found in deserts like cake and other stuff. Usually when you have cake or similar food your usually having a party or doing something fun. It just matters what your doing. If i took a test and had a whole cake i wouldn’t be hyper, but if i had a slice and having a fun time i’d probably be hyper.
There is no nutrition in sugar ZERO!!
Sugar eats through bones and steals the calcium from your bones and burns up the vital vitamin B’s your liver needs to function well. You can’t really go by taste if it’s sweet and if you do you’ll create waste and exhaust the
energy your adrenal glands produce.SUGAR IS A KILLER and the average American consumes 180 lbs of sugar a year. When are Americans going to wake up?
Nope, being excited about having candy is what makes kids hyper. They get hyper just fine all by themselves without any kind of sugar.
Yes it does make my son extremly hyper when he has anything with sugar. My daughter not so nuch, but if u give my son coffee he’s very calm for some reason.
I don’t know how they do their study, but I’ve seen from experience that kids (and adults) get more energy off of sugar. ALSO – it is a long term effect. AND it’s not just sugar – junk food adds to the bad behavior of kids as well.
So kids with ADD/ADHD should consume less sugar and no caffeine as part of a regulation of their condition. My parents are nutritionists.
it depends….. if they get hyper easy or not like if you give a really hyper kid some coffee he will calm down or something like that I heard it somewhere hope that helped have a good day
NO
You should be more concerned about it contributing to obesity.
I think it varies from person to person.
It does make most children hyper. It makes my sister and many of her friends hyper, but it never made/makes me hyper. Also, it usually only gives short boosts of energy. The children get hyper and active during a short period of time, and then they tire easily.
SUGAR AS A CULPRIT VERSUS ADDITIVES.
So many have said they “know” sugar makes their child hyperactive because the child becomes hyperactive after eating cookies or pixie sticks or eating the Hallowe’en candy, etc. Sugar isn’t the only ingredient to consider.
Unless you home-bake and DON’T use food colourings or other available-for-home additives were used (coloured sprinkles, non-pure icing sugar…) the child is probably consuming additives of some kind which are notorious for causing hyperactivity.
Start reading ingredient labels religiously. It’s a shocking eye-opener as to just what goes into ready-made foods, including basics like bread, cream, custard, canned fish, tinned fruit, even so-called “pure” fruit juice. Some additives are innocuous for most people but startling non-the-less. Sugar in cream? Citric acid in apple juice? And then there’s often yellow food colouring in ice-cream and food colouring can also be found in spaghetti sauce, tinned vegetables or fruit. Aspartame can turn up in some funny places, too.
Eating food bought from places like bakeries isn’t necessarily the answer because they may use a pre-mix that they buy in.
Please also read Darren’s post made June 3rd, 2012 at 1:17 am. He makes some very good and pertinent comments.
I think the setting in which children are in may have some contributory factors. At abirthday party they will be much more hyper as a result of the party environment rather than the cake, I raised 3 kids. Just sayin.
Yahoo Propaganda Answers.
A bunch of disinfo coming from the World Health Organization and the criminals at Bilderberg/Rothchild.
you FAIL to mention that the average store sells processed sugar items and is infested with GMOs.
Some manufacturers will go as far as to claim that they have removed GMOs when that is simply false.
Its important to note that obesity is being caused by GMOs as well.
As for caffeine , that could all depend on what beans are being used to begin with, I have no doubt that a majority of the caffeine beans being used are mostly artificial.
This is a load. The British Medical Journal has 10 times as many studies that refute this. Most of us have first hand knowledge. Perhaps one can redefine what being hyper is. Sugar is instant energy. If you eat too much, you will crash after it goes through your system. Common sense is needed.
Ok, so I hear all of the science in this, but it still makes no sense. My mom and her parenting group never thought sugar highs were real. In fact, I never even heard of one till I was eight. Yet, somehow, I was always hyper after eating sugar and still am. I am easily effected by things like caffine but if sugar highs don’t exist, then how am I hyper with sugar?
I hear all you mothers saying well try it with my kids and see!!
well how about this!!
MOTHERS: have you ever tried to sneak a food item that your kids don’t like onto their plates and watch them eat it?
But if you tell them what the item is before hand, they wont even touch it!
Its the same effect here! give them a sugary item which they don’t know is sugary and they will be fine,
let them know that its a sweet and they will go berserk!
It’s all in their mind.
As for sugar, sugar does cause a short burst as it is turned into glucose in the body which is used for energy, but you CANNOT overload on sugar. after the bodies stores of sugar are full, it turns sugar into fat.
What most people tend to forget is that in most sugary products, aspatamine, E numbers and caffeine are also found.
Sugar, along with any of the other energy giving source will produce hyperactivity.
So the fact that SUGAR does not cause hyperactivity is true (which is what this study is about).
And to top it all off, looky what i found;
There are 3 types of energy systems:
ATP-PC system
Anaerobic System
Aerobic System
The ATP-PC System is only used for about 10 seconds, (this is the system that 100m sprinters use) this system uses stores in the muscles for energy.
The Anaerobic System is only used for around 2 mins.(400m sprinter), also known as anaerobic glycolysis, it is called this because we get this energy from the breakdown in sugar. when the sugar is broken down it produces a product known to many as lactic acid.
The aerobic system is used for as long as it needs to be (used by marathon runner). We get this energy from the breakdown of carbohydrates(potatoes, bread).
Your title is very accurate. Sugar does not make them hyper,it makes them SWEET. AHaha……
Quite frankly it’s irrelevant if it makes them hyper or not, you should all watch ‘sugar the bitter truth’ on YouTube then decide if you still want to give your kids all that sugar!
