Luck of the Irish

St. Patrick’s Day is coming up on March 17, originally a religious holiday recognizing the patron saint of Ireland, but it’s now a popular festivity all over the world.  In celebration of this holiday here are five ways to celebrate this most popular saint’s day.

  1. Eat traditional Irish food.  Corned beef and cabbage is popular among Irish Americans, but in Ireland, potatoes, Irish stew, colcannon, bacon and cabbage are one of the staples of the Irish cuisine.
  2. Listen or play some Irish music.  Traditional Irish pub, folk, or Celtic songs will get you in the Irish spirit!
  3. Attend your local parade. New York City, Boston, St. Louis, San Francisco, Montreal and many other big cities across the world have great parades.
  4. Go to an Irish pub.  Many pubs and bars plan St. Patrick day theme parties, with special beers, food and music.
  5. Watch Father Ted. A classic Irish comedy about three priests, and a housekeeper living off the west coast of Ireland.  If you dig Irish humor you’ll be quoting this sitcom.

What ways do you plan on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day?  Feel free to share with the community below!

  1. I plan to give my big ole’ stupid Irish DOG … my Irish Setter … an extra hug. Not that he knows the difference. He gets hugs every day … not because he’s IRISH, but because he’s just all that!

The gorgeous red coat and the handsome face don’t hurt his cause, much!

  5. errr…… what?

No 5 should be the only thing there, really. Everyone knows Father Ted, and will get the references, despite that it is written by Irishman Graham Linehan who was shunned by the Irish State broadcaster RTE so he took it to the UK’s Channel 4 to make the series.

Here’s what you can do: read up on politics and economics of Ireland today, realise we’re stuck with gobeen politics that is still corrupt and immoral and politicians that are lining their pockets with taxpayer’s money, realise Bertie Ahern who created the mess is walking free and recently him and his fellow ministers who broke Ireland and lied about the country’s affairs were recently given a standing ovation at their political party, Finana Fail, Ard Fheis, while the controversial Mahon Report that was commissioned in 1997 to investigate fraud within politics and brown envelopes of payoffs by a different government has yet to publish its final report costing at least €120 million and has made every judge involved millionaires. Oh and how the taxpayer is being held hostage by something called the Croke Park Deal which means anyone working in the public sector is effectively protected despite being the most overpaid bunch in the country that do sweet f all.

As for Celtic music, celebrate Irish bands and artists instead. Not every Irish person listens or even likes the diddly idle dee trad.

As for bacon and cabbage…. again, not eaten every day. But at least you got the whole corned beef and cabbage thing correct, that was the poor immigrant on the shores of America that dreamt that up, not the Irish that live in Ireland.

  10. I plan to wear as much green as I can, listen to my favorite Celtic CDs (and wish I had some that were more upbeat) And head out bar hopping. If I must bring my own food coloring, then I will, because I will only drink green drinks that night <3

  15. you know “the luck of the Irish” used to mean bad luck.
Ireland has survived many invations and fameins and other horrible things. So if someone say lost theor phone, then you should say “luck of the Irish”
