The Yahoo! Answers App for Android is retiring

It’s no surprise, mobile is getting bigger and bigger in the online world. Over a year ago, we introduced the mobile-optimized version of Yahoo! Answers, which is proving to be extremely successful amongst users on any device.

To make things easier for Android users, we developed an app that offered the Yahoo! Answers mobile experience outside of the browser. However, we noticed that most of our mobile users still access the site directly from their browsers. As a result, we decided to focus our resources in building better core experiences for Yahoo! Answers across devices. Effective today, we are retiring the app for Android, but don’t worry: you can still access the mobile version of Yahoo! Answers by visiting answers.yahoo.com from your favorite browser. Or if you already have the Android app downloaded, you’ll still be able to use it.

  2. Thats too bad. The Android app was last updated back in 2010 and was hoping for many of the core features on the desktop site to make their way on the app. (edit comments/posts. thumbs up/down comments etc)

but to be honest the app was just a wrapper for the mobile site. Both are the same thing as both offered the same exact functionality. i lost my connection one time when I launched the app and got a webpage error.

  3. I have no worries, because the mobile web version of Yahoo Answers works better than the android version.

  5. I hope then, in the spirit of fairness, you are also going to retire the iphone equivalent app. Cynics could otherwise claim that your decision is based on rivalry with Google, and actually has no consideration for the users.

  9. reason people use the online one is because the mobile app always says that there was an error!!!

  12. It was totally useless, it was the same as the browser version and it loaded like a browser too cuz it was running in the browser but it deleted the history and cookies.

  19. Big problem I had with the app is that I couldn’t thumbs up/down and I couldn’t see what my contacts were up to. To my knowledge, the web-optimized version still has these problems.

  21. The reason people kept going to the browser is because the app was awful. It was old, wasn’t formatted for tablets, can’t backspace on a bluetooth keyboard in an app, the app was just horrible.. And now instead of improving the app, Yahoo scraps the app.. Wow. Good riddance, now there is one less crap app in the Market.

And thats why I couldnt find it on the app store

  25. I always used mobile version through my browser, because I didn’t even know there was an app for android. If only you had enough announcement for that.

  26. By the way, mobile version doesn’t have “advanced search” option, hope you can add this feature.

  27. You can still access both the mobile and desktop views from the general Yahoo! app for Android. That’s what I use and don’t have to wait for the browser to load, it’s all integrated into the app still.

It may not be a dedicated Yahoo! Answers app, but it works a lot nicer than using the browser.

  30. Frankly, yahoo answers is best, so what if yahoo answers lost on mobile market? Yahoo answers belongs to people who really care and dare. Mobile is only option to get connected, but desktop is always better option than mobile or tablet thing. Keyboarding is a big problem in mobile and tablet. Touch screen is no better than real keybord for people who are used to fast typing. so definitely it’s not yahoo app that is failing, its matter of convinience fron which device you can better stay in touch with yahoo answers.

  31. URGH! That is really unfortunate because I just got my Android and was looking the the Yahoo Answers app! No wonder I couldn’t find it!! :(

  32. Unfortunately, I can’t really care about this.

I got an Android device, but I hide it at the bottom of one of my gym-bags with the intent of it being damaged so I can claim it on my insurance.

I don’t care about an iPod version either, though the entire iPod catalogue is better than anything on Android.

It’d be nice to see a Windows Phone app, but really, as far as people whinging about apps being faster than browsers; it’s not like any of us have anything better to do with our time that we can’t spare another second or two; if your browser is seriously that slow then get a computer that was made after 1992.

  38. I’d never even heard of this app before, but then I don’t use the mobile version of the site either. The desktop version is way more usable, and with Opera Mini to cut my data costs…
