  13. My most memorable birthday, eh?

1 year ago, 5 days before my 17th birthday (its October 6th) I was admitted to the hospital due to three grape-sized ulcers ensconced in my intestines. These little wake-up calls emerged after two stressful months of hell/academic torture called “The Junior Year of High School”.
Anywho, after puking up blood like a madwoman, I passed out and was transported to Herman Memorial. Once there, I spent the next 5 days in the Pediatric ward sleeping in an unflattering open-hiney gown, drinking crappy electrolyte drinks (I swear, they must have been full of the staff’s pee), and having two internal stomach surgeries.
In fact, the day of my 17th birthday, the nurses attending to me gave me a “You’re a big girl, now!” sticker and a teensy smidgen of pink, sugar-free, gluten-free frosting in a small cup to make swallowing all of my Chihuahua-sized medication easier. Hip, hip, f****** Hooray!

  33. My 16th birthday. My family wasn’t big on throwing birthday parties where you invite friends and classmates over. For some unremembered reason I got my mother to promise that I would have a sleep over on my 16th birthday. I was 8 at the time, a loner with few friends. My mother likely just agreed to quiet me from asking to invite them over for my birthday. Near my birthday my sophomore year in high school, I told the friends I ate lunch with that I would be having them over for my birthday. I reminded my mother and she gave in accepting the fact that she did promise 8 years earlier. It was a special weekend for me that reminded me how far I had come from an 8 year old that could list all of her friends on one hand.

I guess an added moral to this is parents be careful what you say to your kids just to appease them at the moment; you never know what they will manage to remember even years later.

To YAT, happy birthday. Hope you’re eating chocolate cake. Seems a suggestion board suggestion has made it’s way into a reality. Maybe not how anyone expected but cool. Thanks. Any plans to sell the ballons at the company store?

  37. When I was 5 years old
My godmother, Aunt Bonnie, brought me a dog.

I didn’t know it at the time, but my Aunt, Uncle, and 5 cousins actually saved the dog from the abusive family that owned it.
They all lived in a rural area about an hours drive from our family.
Their neighbors had obtained a Collie puppy a year earlier.
They witnessed the dog being chased, kicked, hit with sticks, and more ..by the family that owned it. The dog was left outside winter summer spring and fall and they never witnessed any affection shown to the animal. Nor did they ever witness the dog growl, bark, nor bite any of the kids, not even while it was being being abused by them.

So anyways… on the cold January morning as my cousins climbed into their station wagon for the hour drive to my house for my 5th birthday, my Uncle Herbie snatched up the neglected neighbors dog, and brought it along.

She was very frightened and shivered as we tried to come near her and pet her. She cowered and shied away from us for a while, But she soon learned that these new kids (me, my 2 siblings, and the cousins) never hit her and in fact were affectionate and kind. We kept her warm, fed her and loved her. She was healthy, well groomed and cared for the next 10 years of her life. She became an in-house dog, and a part of our loving family. She was always obedient, sweet, loyal, and the best pet ever.

That was my most memorable birthday.

  38. The year I turned 15, I had some of the best friends around. We were a group of four and because of that, we often paired up together.

As a simple person, all I wanted was to see a movie with them and have lunch afterwards and so that’s what we did.

Dinner with my family followed later that night.

I received presents, but really, it was about having a great time with people who were important to me. My birthdays after that have been lackluster, due to the fact that certain people I loved were not around, making my 15th the most memorable.

  40. I just wanted to say, I remember way back yonder when Yahoo! Answers celebrated their first birthday… remember this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcFvoMa36L0 There were so few people back then, Yahoo! gave away Yahoo! Answers gifts to all the top level members (I think the level 7 people got jackets and level 6 people got mugs like the ones above). I got a hat (I was a level 4 back then) and I still wear it. :-)

My most memorable birthday was probably my 12th. I had a very fancy and elegant celebration at this upscale Italian restaurant with my parents, brother, and grandmother. It was quite memorable as it was so exciting and and ‘step up’ from the typical ‘kiddie’ parties I had when I was younger. (-:

I have been here since April 2006 (April 25, 2006 to be exact) and I really got so many good things out of this forum which I may not be able to tell or want to reveal…lol!

Question: What is your most memorable birthday and why?

Answer: My most memorable Birthday was 10th July 2007 when I first met my best friend (back in January 2007, thanks again to Y!A forum) who wished me unexpectedly since I thought we are respondents or users in Y!A and not suppose to be communicating on private level. 45. Wednesday, December 13, 2006… The celebration of Yahoo! Answers first year of activity. This was also the largest group that I ever joined in a Birthday celebration.

Getting to meet both the Yahoo! Answers staff and some of the top users of the first year is not something easily forgotten. There were even some notable Yahooligans present who were not directly working with the Answers site (was that really David Filo?).

  76. Life is not neatly divided into happy times and sad times.Often the sorrow and the joy are mixed in together andsome of our most treasured and beautiful moments happenin the midst of great sorrow or loss. This being the case, Iwould have to say my most memorable birthday was my45 th, falling as it did that year on a Saturday, halfwaybetween the date of my brother-in-law’s sudden andshocking death and the date of his funeral. When I received the news, I quickly made arrangements totake off work and drive the 90 or so miles to my parents’home, where my sister and her children were staying. Myother sister who lives in Oklahoma and some of her familycame out also. We all stayed the whole week. It was quitecrowded in my parents’ mobile home, of course. My aunt asked if some of us might want to stay at her place, but weall wanted to be together. My sisters and I stayed up very late talking, crying, hugging, and praying together. And during the day times,we made a couple of trips out to the house where my sister had been living. We helped gather up things she needed, asit was difficult for her to go alone to the house where her husband had shot himself in the back yard several daysearlier.
I remember being at a shop picking out flowers with myfamily and it was maybe Thursday or so of that week. Itold them I would, of course, not be expecting anyacknowledgement of my birthday that year. But as it turned out, some friends of my sister and the owners of aKaraoke bar where she and her husband had spent a lot of time had arranged a fund raiser for her which was to takeplace on Saturday (my birthday) at the Karaoke bar. And as it turned out, by that time, we were all ready totake a break from the sadness to appreciate that specialbond with family and friends that shines through so clearlyin times of grief and difficulty. So we sang and laughed andenjoyed the night. My sister from Oklahoma had never sung Karaoke before, but had lots of experience singing inher church choir. She was eager to give Karaoke a try andwas determined she would be good at it. Looking throughthe book, she managed to find “Amazing Grace”. She had alittle difficulty at first and made the Karaoke people start the song over 3 times, but then she sang beautifully and thepeople in the bar seemed to love it and we all got tearfulagain. Then, just before we were ready to leave, my sister whohad lost her husband got up to sing and said she had chosena song that he had been asking her to sing for him, but she
had never gotten to it while he was alive. So she sang “MyHeart Will Go On” in a clear beautiful voice without breaking down at all. Definitely one of those treasured moments. Then, a month or so later, my family drove to my town, brought a cake and presents, and took me out to dinner tocelebrate my birthday. Because they are just awesome like that.

  80. Hmm. Well I haven’t exactly had a “out of this world” birthday party, but I must say that my 14th was pretty cool for me.
The day before the party Mom and Dad took me out…shopping. Ok, yes I’m a guy and shopping is really not my thing, in fact my dad really calls it hunting when you know what you’re looking for, which at the time we did. (don’t laugh) Overalls. Ok you can laugh now. But ya, bib-overalls. I had really been wanting a pair because it was like spring and we had been doing a whole lot of garden work and I just thought it would be nice to have an old fashion pair of overalls.
However, if you know my mom, you’d know it wasn’t a grab in go. Oh no. I tried on stuff. I tested stuff, and if I said yes to everything she suggested I get we would be bankrupt. But I enjoyed every minute of it, while at the same time knew I wanted t get out of the store.
Surly you know that feeling, where you are enjoying something just because of the people you’re enjoying it with. Well that’s how I felt.
So we went to a thrift store. Found the overalls, bought them, and left. All in all, it took about 3 hours…ok maybe 2.
After ‘hunting’ we went to Walmart. Oh joy. Yah, but this time we went there to get party food. yep. And since I was there… well I’ll just let your imagination take it from there.
Once finished shopping for food we had become hungry. I don’t know if there are food samplers in your walmarts, but ours don’t, so we went to a really nice restaurant called PF-Chang, or something like that! It was a wonderful meal, and afterwards we had cheese cake. Wonderful cheese cake. Fabulous cheese cake. But once again, I’m sure I would have enjoyed the occasion if we would have gone to MacyD’s!
Being full from our meal we went to our state park with the brand new soccer ball that we had bought at walmart.
Now let me tell you right up front that it’s not an accustom to see my parents playing soccer, but they were doing it! And I was surprised to see that Dad had a few tricks up his sleeve.
We played and ran, and laughed (it was funny seeing Mom chase after our balls) and an unfortunate rain spoiled the fun after about half and hour.
This how ever didn’t stop us from cooling of with a box of icecream sandwiches we had gotten from walmart, reminding us that we had to go back there again to get the rest of the cold food like icecream, pie, and frozen food.

When we finally got home, my family had decorated, wrapped gifts, cooked some food, prepared things for the food we had just bought, slightly cleaned the house, and invited the US President…ok not really :P . We partied for a long night, and ate and got full. I don’t really remember what was given to me, but that doesn’t really matter. What matters was that I was with my family, had a good day with my parents, and got a pair of bib-overalls. Preferably the two formers.

Thanks to who ever read this, and thanks to Mom and Dad for making my party so great, even though a lot of the time we were shopping, it was spending more time with you guys that really counted.

  86. Mine was my 21st birthday in 1982.

I am a die-hard UNC fan, as has been the tradition in my family for 80+ years, and a person I had played sandlot ball with as a teenager ( James Worthy) was on the team along with Michael Jordan.

On that day, UNC was playing for their first national championship in basketball since their then-coach Dean Smith was on their 1957 team. Here I was, with my favorite team as my last entry in our fraternity tournament pool. It was my first day being ‘legal”, and after they won, it became a blur….

Thing is, 29 years later I remember the day like it was yesterday….

  95. My birthday is on Christmas Day and for many years it just got passed up. People were sick of parties and I think my mother was too busy to let me have one. I do not recall any birthday parties after the age of 10 or so. But, that’s the way it goes! Nobody wants to eat birthday cake when they’ve fruit-caked and cookied themselves to death! LOL!

  96. I do not celebrate birthdays usually. when my birthday comes friends usually send messages and few relatives call and wish me. On august 26th 2011 that is on my 23rd birthday, i went to college for writing an exam and came to home around 2.00 in the afternoon. By the time i entered home, Dad left. He went to bakery shop and brought a cake. He had ordered a cake before itself. I celebrated at 3.00pm, After i celebrated i posted the pictures in blogs and other social networks thanks to the technology. And then i wondered why i did not celebrate in the morning. My dad said that i was born at august 26th 1988 at 3pm in the afternoon. So kind of him. This was the only day i celebrated my birthday!

  104. It was my first birthday and my parents decided to throw me a huge party at my grandparents house. they decided since i loved dumbo that they were going to throw me a circus party. the day of my party it was a little hectic, my mom had ordered a cotton candy machine and a popcorn machine. when my mom started the cotton machine it worked good except for the fact that some would escape and go to the ceiling so it looked like pink cobwebs. once everyone came we had a blast! one of my birthday presents was a elephant and a giraffe that were stuffed animals. my cake was awesome i got my own and i got to eat it all by myself. once the cake was gone you couldn’t see my face…….or my clothes. I saw all of my friends parents there in the pictures my mom showed me, and all of my relatives. all in all I think my birthday was a blast or what I saw in the pictures and videos anyways……….well thats my story i hope you like it. :)

  105. Yay! Happy birthday Y!A, I don’t know what I’d do without you! My most memorable birthday was my 5th, we rented some party place for a day with a barn, track for racing the little go karts, and even equipped with special [tacky] accessories to put on a show for the guests. Not surprisingly, my brother and I were too busy fighting over the bouncy ball to come up with anything impressive.
    Cheers!

  109. mine was when I had a shared birthday party with my sister who is two years oldre thatn me. we invited a lot of girls (who we were “friends” with. so the party was ok. Then the crushing blow came when mom said “ok time to open presents!” and one girl (who I still know as an accuantence) said “um, we didn’t bring any presents.” and did a cartwheel. but when she said that, she said it in a snotty way. and sure enough NONE of our guests brought any. ik thats not what birthdays all about, but that stinks! Its like going throught Christmas morning, and not getting any gifts. stinky. anyway and thats my most memorable birthday. hope you like my comment (I really love thoes mugs) can u buy them in stores?

Managed to trade Duty with another, which let me go swimming. Yea! Being from the East coast, having the opportunity to take a dip in the Pacific wasn’t to be passed up. Having a California beach all to myself wasn’t bad either.
That was back in ’82, and l not only have the shirt, I can still wear it, too.

    My blog:http://www.xsweddingdress.info
I guess an added moral to this is parents be careful what you say to your kids just to appease them at the moment; you never know what they will manage to remember even years later.

To YAT, happy birthday. Hope you’re eating chocolate cake. Seems a suggestion board suggestion has made it’s way into a reality. Maybe not how anyone expected but cool. Thanks. Any plans to sell the ballons at the company store?

I will also never forget that same time feeling like the characters on the children’s T.V. shows with my own party and all. I will never forget that birthday!

  139. Wow!!!!

I’ve been a member since early 2006. This has been a wonderful place to come to when you want a question answered (I think Polls and Surveys is terribly under appreciated) about mores and values. I know that I’ve laughed and cried here. I’ve learned and I’ve passed on my knowledge. This is a really important outlet for me and even though I’ve slowed down I am thrilled every time I can give a hand or pass on something that I feel is true.
