July is Hitchhiking Month
July is known for many fun celebrations such as, National Blueberry Month and National Hot Dog Month. One unique observance that caught our attention was hitchhiking. July is Hitchhiking Month!
How do we celebrate Hitchhiking Month? Easy! Dare we say it, pick up a hitchhiker. Hitchhiking wasn’t always so bad.
During the Great Depression, hitchhiking was a very common method of travel. People didn’t have a lot of money and they needed work. Just ask many of the baby boomers today, and they’ll tell you stories of their free rides. They enjoyed being on the road and having great conversation with a complete stranger.
Fast-forward to today and it’s quite different! With so many hitchhikers, problems arose with drivers getting robbed or even murdered. Soon drivers often worried about becoming the hunted. These days we have a “generation of paranoid horror tales of what would happen if you picked up a hitchhiker.”
Please take the poll below and tell us if you’ve every picked up a hitchhiker. Let us know why or why not in the comments section.
