What do you plan to do for Earth Hour 2011?

On Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 8:30p.m., major cities and countries are encouraged to turn off their lights for one whole hour. Do you plan to participate in Earth Hour 2011?

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, in order to take a stand against climate change. Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever with 128 countries participating and landmarks across the country stood in darkness.

This year, WWF is encouraging everyone to go beyond the hour. Whether it’s turning off the AC and opening the windows or cutting back on water and taking shorter showers, one single action from you can help lead to a more sustainable Earth, even when the lights come back on!

If you do plan on participating, help spread the word through Facebook, Twitter or even YouTube. So start here and tell us what you plan to do for Earth Hour 2011.

“On Earth Hour 2011, I plan on….”

  5. I plan to turn on EVERY light I can AND do a load of laundry while the dishwasher and TV are both running. ‘Earth Hour’ is a publicity stunt that is not even intended to have any impact on the environment.

  6. I’m not sure I want to turn on all of my lights, but I like that idea. Personally, I don’t care what the WWF (is this a green organization or is it the company that does fake sporting events?) thinks. I don’t know what I’ll do during this particular hour yet, but it won’t be any different than a usual Saturday night for me. I’m thankful for the Tea Party, which has probably stopped the Cap and Tax scheme.

  12. whats wrong with you people?
yeah probly turning out the lights for an hour doesnt do too much to the enviorment but it conserves just a tiinnyyy bit of energy. it wastes just a tiinnnyy bit less fossil fuel. A tiinnyy bit mooorreee time for our earth to survive. animals that were plentifull 10 years ago are almost extint today.
its YOUR world you’re living in. and you guys are destroying it like nothing would happen. Wouldnt you want your children to abel to here about polar bears.. still alive? Wouldnt you like to hear about the ozone repairing itself instead of getting torn apart?
Its not just one person’s job to clean up your trash nd turn out your lights and waste less water. Its a global effort. and if you want to be abel to smell clean air and see clean forest then you have to quit being such a lazy a** and recycle and not use a/c if you dont need it and walk somewhere nearby instead of driving 2 minutes.
or ride the bus or carpool with friends!
i dont know about you but i actually want to breathe clean air and still have fuel to keep my house running. I want my children to, too. And my grandchildren if we are actually responsible enough for them to be born into this world.
We’re really killing ourselves by being so irresponsible and selfish

  18. The psychic prediction forecast for the year of 2011 is shocking so far as floods and earthquakes are concerned. The apocalypse is more of a long transition of progressive earth changes that includes flood, famine, plague, and earth changes rather than one huge overnight episode of calamity as told by the Mayan 2012 galactic alignment calendar.

  19. Unfortunately, like last year I will be at work then. A large department store that is open until 10pm on Saturdays is not a good place to be shutting off the lights after dark.

  21. I won’t do anything else beyond the required hour of turning off the lights.

I already recycle darned near everything I can. I use Freecycle for books, clothes, unwanted household items, etc. I cut back on using the dishwasher, laundry (doing bigger loads instead of several small ones), use reusable bags every time I shop & other stuff.

WWF (World Wildlife Foundation) hasn’t proven to anyone that this Earth Hour has done any good besides cut power consumption by 1% or even less. When it’s bigger than that, I’ll happily find a way to do more.

  22. I will be sleeping and so in turn I will be saving energy in my own way without others controlling my actions. I love the whole idea of helping out the planet, but just not the whole commercialization and money grubbing happening behind the scenes. They may say there isnt, but I am sure there is. I hit the bed at 7:40 on the weekends so I will be asleep long before 8:30.

This makes it seem like you are doing something important, but it just a sop to make you feel good and then be able to brag that see I care for the environment. I plan on and have done things like turn off lights when not in use and turn off the A/C when not in the room. Switched to those energy saver bulbs and take showers in 5 minutes only turning on the water when needed. Not because I care a fig about the environment, but because as it is utilities are just to expensive.

  28. I am planning on turning of all the lights and having dinner by candle light and a cards and games night with my friends with no lights or electrical appliances.

Another option, I might turn of all the un-neccesary electricity in the house and go camping for the night..

  29. I don’t see what’s wrong with some energy conservation, even if it could be bogus, why not do something that you can imagine others doing all over- all at the same time- If not only to remind yourself how electricity should not be taken for granted. some have it, others don’t. some abruptly lose it, some never knew of it. I say it is something you can at least appreciate more by removing it for 1 little hour of your lives. you never know what may occur that could cancel it out for you. Why don’t you appreciate it, humor it, participate, and change things up for a little ol’ hour. Collective movements have some sort of influence, and you have the power to choose how it affects you just by participating. Come on, don’t be so uncaring and selfish. Just let go. Impacts aren’t usually known to one person but by all. Take heed of what you have and let go of taking things for granted.

  33. wow why is everyone here a douche.
i’ll try to remember to use less light on saturday…but whats up with all the haters. Fine run all your lights all day, your bill will go up, not mine!
and of course it wont have any impact on the environment, its only 1 hour out of the 50million hours in a year…so calm down, its supposed to be for awareness, not to literally try to save the world.
If they seriously wanted you to save the world by using less electricity, your power would be cut-off by force or the price will just go so high that you’ld WANT to use less energy.
I’m not poor at all, at all, and i still plan to save energy.

  34. Ima gonna turn off all the lights ‘n heat. Then Ima gonna gonna make a fire in da fireplace, light a bunch o’ candles ‘n turn on my kerosene heaters ’cause it’s better that we all release carbon monoxide into the environment instead of carbon dioxide like the evil power companies do.

Comment posted on March 24th, 2011 at 9:45 pm by Looney Dufass
  35. Why only for an hour? No matter how many people turn their lights for an hour, it’s going to be like taking a sole bucket of water out of the ocean. If they want to make a difference, they’ll need to have lights off for a lot longer than a sole hour.

Try going a whole week where you leave your lights off for two or more hours each night. Try doing that for a month. Then, maybe then, it will work. But shutting off lights for one hour, being earth conscious for one measly hour of one day of one year is going to absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things.

  52. Well, since climate change has been happening for century’s and is a naturally occurring I will burn tires, turn on all my lights, The only reason I would try to save power is to save money.

Note, its funny that this earth thing was made to combat global warming, but after that was disproved they act like they meant climate change the whole time. There isn’t enough data for you to say the climate is changing unnaturally, it proves that the people that mad it up were not extrapolating their data correctly. You can’t make a large assumption with a small amount of data.

Believe it or not, while appliances and electronics may not be in use, if they are still plugged into the outlet, they are still consuming energy.

  57. I do that anyway, every day of the year, not just one day a year. I use candles because I like candles. If I have a light on at all, it’s a little 9volt light for the hallway. I used to be a stage hand, so I’m used to working and seeing in the dark.

Like christmas, the spirit of it can easily be celebrated every day of the year instead of being isolated to one day only. People can share and be kind to each another everyday instead of reserving that attitude, or spirit, for just one day out of the whole year. Makes absolutely no sense to me…

And as you can see here from some of the negative responses, this is WHY so much energy is being wasted. Some are way too arrogant to care at this point of their lives.

  95. Although it might seem like it’s not going to do much, it actually will, if EVERYBODY does it. One person might not make a change, but if everybody helps out, it will make a difference. So stop being selfish. This is a chance to make a change and save the Earth! Don’t you want your children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren to breath in clean air? To have a good life and to be able to here that polar bears and tigers are still alive? Wouldnt you like to hear about the ozone repairing itself instead of getting torn apart?

Animals that were plentifull 10 years ago, are almost extinct today! We humans are way too selfish and we do everything we want, without caring for the animals, environment….. actually, everything! We need to stop being so selfish and irresponsible or else we’ll just be causing more destuction. Although we destroy the Earth, we live on the Earth. That means we’re just hurting ourselves. This is OUR chance. Yes, “our” as in all of us!

I don’t know about you, but i actually want to breathe clean air and still have fuel, electricity, and clean water to keep my house running. I want my children to, too. And my (great) grandchildren if we are actually responsible enough for them to be born into this world.
We’re really killing ourselves by being so irresponsible and selfish.

This is a chance, take it

  96. I find it amusing that so many people think burning candles is good for the environment. Candles emit carbon dioxide, and are made from paraffin which comes out of the ground right along with petroleum and natural gas. Unless you burn soy candles or beeswax, your candles are burning fossil fuel and probably emmiting more carbon dioxide than a low-wattage lamp would burn. Candles also give off soot, which is a hazardous particulate that is considered dangerous when it comes out of a tailpipe. To add to that some candle wicks contain lead and you will be breathing that. An old EPA study said “Burning only two candles three hours each day on a regular basis in the home could increase exposure to airborne lead by a factor of 5 or more.” People will never be “green” if they don’t bother to learn about the products they use.

  106. We will, for the third year in a row, turn off all the electricity at the circuit breaker and have fun playing games by candle light. No, it does seem like it will make a lot of difference to turn the lights out for an hour, but when millions of people and even municipalities do it, it does make a bit of a difference, and it brings awareness. But even beyond that, at least in our house, it brings us closer together. We go so far as to not even use anything that will have to be recharged, we use no power, stored or not, during that hour. How many hours a year do you spend with your family with no distractions?

I do not do this for “Global Warming” I do it for energy conservation, period.

Until we find away to live with out it,we need to conserve it. If everyone would just do it,for just that one simple hour. Can you imagine all that is being saved? Think of everyone in the world. Millions & millions it really does/will help.

  131. I’ll do something that actually matters like pick up litter (since I’m outside, my home’s lights will be off). I don’t need a special day or hour to care about the environment. You gotta be the change you wanna see.
I’m all for keeping the planet clean, but such rituals as this prove to me that once again the climate change movement is largely a religious one for the unquestioning zealots and the posers. Wow. What effort. You tuned your lights off? GO OUTSIDE AND DO SOMETHING THAT MATTERS (and turn your damn lights off like most reasonable people). The idea of celebrating and seeking recognition for something you should be doing anyway is just laughable. Here’s a thought: Demand a pat on the back for not shoving food in your maws for a whole hour. Obesity and factory farming are two other issues that affect the environment. You didn’t stuff your pie hole? You are special and get a medal… now, back to the trough.
Believe as you will but I find many of the true beleivers obnoxious, close minded misanthropes… not a team I will ever embrace. Celebrating and ritualizing what you should be doing anyway? Bizarre….

  149. To me it is not the energy conservation that is significant here. It is the unity, the symbolism, the overall respect for our environment and the idea of putting something first, besides our own needs. It is the idea of respecting anything period. It is about honoring and about the human species letting their guard down and coming together and letting go of insecurities and skepticism and societys “what about me” attitude.

It isn’t really about energy conservation that much. To conserve energy is simpler that to overcome the issues that plague our character.

To be honest, I think our calenders are off. For example. People have been stating that we have had a “longer summer” and a “longer winter” I think our timing is off in the sense that the seasons are rotating. Perhaps even our magnetic poles are shifting in space. Perhaps the North and South pole will become the new equator as the old one becomes a new pole. Makes sense since our planet and core are rotational

It was actually quite fun. This ended about 9:45p and then for about 10 minutes, my roomie and I chilled outside in the rain! All you enviromental freaks should turn off your power PERMANENTLY if you don’t like electricity, let’s see you practice what you tell the rest of us to do.

  179. Let those living in developed countries turn off their lights on average, they consume lot more energy per capita. I’m from India where is we face frequent power cuts so participating in this ONE HOUR stunt is an over-the-top gesture.

  181. Well, yesterday for Earth Hour, I was actually pumped up for it to happen. It was about 8:27pm and I had three minutes before it started. So I quickly brushed my teeth, while listening to music, and once it hit 8:30pm I closed all the upstairs lights, went downstairs and closed some lights, and just smiled and said, “Wow. Look how much better the world would look like with less energy.” :)

  182. What a bogus bunch of bananas – Earth Hour !

Seems to me that, actually, every single hour we live is “Earth.Hour.” To br really serious about “saving the Earth” wouldn’t you have to shun virtually all modern technologies?
Otherwise, you’re just flapping your earthy lips!

  183. I celebrated man’s achievements in improving the life of all people with technology by running as much as reasonable at once. I was washing clothes, using the laptop with the extra 19″ monitor and watching TV, with the lights on.

Humans have achieved so much, technology produces great wonders we should appreciate far more.

  184. The cause is noble, but the result is useless. Do you know how little one hour is a year? 365,25 days a year, 24 hours a day. That is approx. 8766 hours. Unless this becomes a weekly thing, I can’t see how it can do much. What should be done, though, is all those damn businesses leaving ALL their lights, computers, etc., on, should be switched off when it’s not used. If each business switched off their appliances in off-hours, (normally, say 19:00- 05:00) that’s ten hours a day. 70 a week, 3652.5 hours a year.

  185. I got out of the house, closed all the light and my pc and gone with a friend to drink a coffee outside. So the whole hour we just sat outside drinking coffee and watching youtube videos on my phone xD. Is that a “green” thing to do?

“Of course Global warming and evolution exists”.

Your quote did not mention evolution, so the comparison you imply shows your own dishonesty, nothing else. As for global warming, it probably does exist; however it is a natural phenomenon, that has occurred throughout geological time. Human activity has a small effect on climate, carbon dioxide a trivial effect. Certainly reducing our output will not make any significant difference. To think otherwise is pure ignorance.

My degree is in Earth Sciences, by the way. On the whole geologists (the people who understand this as science) are bemused by the whole fuss, the idea that climate has ever been consistent or stable, or that human activity can predictably affect climate change.

The made-up “science” of climatology is actually a bunch of modellers trying to prove what they already “knew” with no reliable empirical data, whose models are known not to reflect reality and then make predictions which are not borne out. Note that in real science the way one tests a hypothesis is by making predictions and testing them. If not borne out then the hypothesis (or theory) is wrong. In climate science they simply change the colour coding of a chart to look like what they predicted*, even though the colours then don’t mean what they do on the prediction. They are that petty and think we are that stupid.

    * This relates to the consistent prediction in every warmist climate models that the greatest warming will be in the tropics in the 300 hPa – 150 hPa band, upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. A lot of diagrams were therefore made from models with red in the middle, indicating significant warming. Problem was that region is not warming at all (main warming is in the lower troposphere, proving that the warming is not caused by carbon dioxide absorbing long-wave radiation). One researcher changed the coding so that from about -0.5 degrees up showed in reds. So the diagram looked right!

  189. Since global warming is a naturally occuring cyclical event and the human contribution to it is less than .01% I will continue to do nothing. We can protest global warming all we want, but it will continue as it has since the beginning of this earth.

  190. I can’t turn the heat down any lower as I’m already freezing here in Minnesota, perhaps I could get many friends over and generate body heat. Anyway, I do drive less and try to keep my heat at 50, use less water by not flushing the toilet more than once a day. Also, I try to leave out the lights for at least 20 hours a day but with the snow and clouds here I have a hard time seeing where I’m going in my home. My eyesight isn’t so good. I asked the neighbors if I could cook at there house to save energy but that didn’t go over very good. I’m open to new ideas from anyone out there. What else could I do? Maybe have a fireplace installed , Mn. has a lot of trees for firewood.

  191. There was zero participation in my community and no events planned in the area. “Climate change” is considered a scam in my area an invention of Al gore and any real climate change has been happening since earths creation with little to any effect made by man. Yahoo’s participation only increases computor use and therby increaseing energy use causeing more harm supposedly so what a waste yahoo.

  192. I’m not sure if earth hour really helps or anything but I guess what I will do is stay outside most of the day with my t.v., lights, etc turned off. I will also see if my parents are willing to turn some things off. Still, it’s hard to tell if this day is just a publicity stunt like one of the above comments I have read had said. Global warming isn’t a real thing like it was thought to have been by millions of people. That’s why I am having a hard time with this one.

  199. I’m NOT going to use candles becaus they pollute MORE than lightbulbs. I will use all styrofoam eating cups and plates because they are inert and will not AFFECT the environment as much as using water to wash glassware. I WILL drive my car to work because riding a bus is MORE pollution because only 5 other people are driving in the monstrosity and it has less emmission control devices on it than my car..

  203. You all realize that candles give off more pollutants per candle-power than an the electricity used by a light bulb right? While all of you nitwits are out burning the 8 or so candles necessary to read a book, you’re actually putting more pollutants into the air than a light bulb would.

  208. Oh look I just figured it all out – when Wall Street ate my job, it’s not that it was greedy beyond bounds…

It just wanted to make sure I would turn off my lights in preparation for Earth day!

How thoughtful of you Wall Street – and here I had you, Quant Analysts and Hedge Fund Managers and risk analysts, all of you pegged as a greedy slime that stole my opportunity to be gainfully employed doing something meaningful.

I guess you’ve been the good guy all along! Well, done deal. You worked so hard to make my job disappear, that I will personally go around the neighborhood sharing what a great bunch of guys you all are.

You’re all so great, you should never, ever, ever, live within a 50 mile radius of me. I just wouldn’t be worthy of it.
