The Answers community is about to get even bigger!
Currently, as a pre-requisite to participate on Yahoo! Answers, we ask that you have a Yahoo! ID to sign-in to the Yahoo! network. This in turn is where your identity on both Yahoo! and Answers is managed from.
Now, as part of Yahoo’s moves to make the web a more social and open place we are opening up Answers to people with Google or Facebook IDs too.
We appreciate people don’t want to be overwhelmed by different logins for each site you want to participate in on the web and through a technology called OpenID we’re able to eliminate the need for multiple logins across different Web sites.
After you sign-in with your Google or Facebook ID you’ll be able to fully participate on Yahoo! Answers.
Check out this video to see how easy it is to sign-in with a Google or Facebook ID:
A few points to note:
- For existing Answers members you’ll still see all of your existing content when you login with your Yahoo! ID. However you also have the option to `bind` your Facebook/Gmail account with your Yahoo! account. If you choose to do this you’ll be able to see all of your Answers content when logged in with either your Gmail or Facebook account. Read this help page to find out how to do this*
- If you sign in with your Facebook ID you still control what is published to your Facebook feed from Answers through the checkbox on the ask/answer flow. Your activity on Answers will not automatically be published on your Facebook feed.
- OpenID isn’t available for the Mobile version of Answers just yet… we’re working on it though and we expect to make it available in the coming months
- All participants using Google or Facebook IDs will still be subject to our Yahoo! ToS and Answers Community Guidelines when contributing to the site.

The big question is going to be this. Facebook and Google users are going to see YA as a chat room. Just telling them to read the CG and TOS is not going to impact them at all. Since the CM system is down most of the time, YA will quickly become more of a chat room and spam site than it is now. It would be nice if Yahoo would address why they keep adding features when they can not keep the old ones working. Without a vibrant, working CM system with better features for good reporters, all users should abandon reporting anything and lets just have a chat room.
oh cool
“The big question is going to be this. Facebook and Google users are going to see YA as a chat room.”
Dude…Yahoo yahoos already do that.
ya
In some manner, it is good to add new queries to the fold, but sometimes those seekers are not all to much more than previous spambots, we still can’t get rid of,
Facebook has some report options as does Google, but one almost has to report self in order to report at all,
could this also mean that one user with all web services could access this service, there are already multiple accounts discrepancies, having multiple accounts, and external services to weld over one site could raise havoc , so caution is needed, and vigilance towards spammers,
Reminder to use Yahoo Pulse as well to connect to other services, and to search for previous Answers as well as asking new Questions,
have a Yamster nice time
Yahoo rocks
I’m concerned with the people that put ads in place of real answers or use bad mouth and bad language as part of their answers. There are already a lot of people doing that on just the Yahoo clientel. What will happen if its opened up to everyone else with bad attitudes and ads? I hope there is a lot stricter watching and monitoring by the Yahoo staffers to guard against that happening.
So if an account is susspended .. will a user lose all accsess to facebook and google to ? or just from Yahoo.I dont like this idea at all ..
What Henry said. Now more than ever, users need a clear tutorial, not endless Help FAQs where the information is fragmented.
Please, please do something NOW, before all the rubbish from FB invades YA.
What’s the point of even doing this. So you can log into this with your facebook or Google. A lot of times people would rather not share their Yahoo Answers account information because often times they ask questions when relating to friends that they are having problems with (thus hurting any friends, that they know on facebook or google) or when they give poor advice, I don’t see people as really wanting to do this. Let’s just keep it the same w/o the facebook and google add-ins. There won’t be an increased # of people, just the same number of people using different accounts.
I always like yahoo answers because there are so many people that solved my problems, its like now i have a close relation with yahoo…
You may have your own expansion and marketing reason to go gmail and facebook way. No doubt both of these are good platforms for expansion. But I thought some times Facebook is more for fun and not serious type of things get discussed there- it is a palce to show your face-so to speak- and just be connected with known people to you with out any seriousness, I like the way YA is presently because it gives some sort of privacy. I would not like all my known people to know what answer I gave to some one needing a serios answer. I think if you have foresight- you may land in more trouble with facebook users and better scrap the idea to go that way. It is nice to see your page in Facebook and thats it- then invite people to log in in YA, which I feel is better plac to communicate with purpose- to help etc. I may be sounding alarmist..but I have my own hunch- knowing the people in FB and the contents therein.
Do some proper analysis before you open the flood gaes- you may drown YA and loos the good lead you have.
Think about it.
Long time satisfied user of YA.
cheers
bigger is not necessarily better. greed rears it’s ugly head.
@Henry Boyter
And Yahoo isn’t a chat room right now? Sure, yahoo answers may have the least of it, but there is plenty of craproom here.
Also, where you get the idea that Google is a spam zone?
Now, Facebook–I can understand that.

I couldn’t have said it any better.
This is a nice feature – for those who can use it. I, as a Yahoo member am not awarded a reciprocal treatment from either facebook or google. As a matter of fact, I could not even use my Yahoo log-in to participate in delicious ( a yahoo bookmarking service) until very recently:-)
I sometimes feel inferior on the web where facebook members are allowed to use their fb login on almost any website for commenting on blogs, news, what-have-you, but even though yahoo makes it possible to do the same using Y!connect, websites (with the exception of Huffington Post) do not offer this option. Just wondering why that is?
I worry that the quality of posts on Y!A has gone wey down over the years. How will this help matters?
Meant to say “way down.”
I’ve used my facebook account to log onto various websites, but I would never do it here on Y!A. ~*~ This not only has to do with my privacy, but the privacy of others.
You showed a relatively detailed video of how one can log onto Y!A with their facebook account, but you never showed what the end result would be on the other end.
What if I have someone blocked on facebook that I don’t have blocked on this site? Or visa versa?
This is a smart move. Now you just need to find out a good way to get the message out.
It is becoming too public and as a result Yahoo Answers may suffer more bugs and technical glitches. Beside there are already so many trolls, now there will be even more.
Since when does “the checkbox on the ask/answer flow” “control what is published to your Facebook feed”?
Please fix things like this, before you add more functionalities that don’t work right.
i think these new features are completely unnecesary
I like this move. I was yahoo answers to get bigger.
I’ve been getting suspended more easily than I used to. Often times it takes one violation, sometimes even less for me to get suspended.
Often times its just because I post a link inside of a question, which DOES have to do with what the user asked. I even made a blog dedicated to the improvement of yahoo answers, and sites like it.
really don’t wanna share my questions and answers with my pals on facebook…
and nor do i want the world to access to my fb profile page via my profile on yahoo answers…
not cool… not at all cool…
at least, i am not going to sigh in on yahoo from my facebook id… NEVER
