Question: How do you get rid of the hiccups?

Episode 11 Winner

Congrats to Venus: Merry Christmas for the best answer to Episode 11’s question, Where did kissing under the mistletoe come from?

I think it originated in Scandinavia.
It probably began with a Love story passed down from generation to generation.

MISTLETOE LOVE STORY
Two Lovers had to sneak away into the woods to see each other.
There, they could kiss underneath the Mistletoe without anyone knowing.

When the girl’s parents found out, they forbid her to leave their home alone.

Her Lover managed to send a message to her. He said that they would run away to be together. He told her that he would make the preparations for their elopement.
When everything was ready, he would leave a sprig of Mistletoe on her window ledge.
At that time, she should run into the woods to meet him.

The night finally came and she found the sprig of Mistletoe on her ledge.
She climbed out her window and escaped into the night.
She ran to the Forest and found her Lover there waiting for her.

They embraced and kissed underneath the Mistletoe.
Then, together, they vanished into the night.

And they lived Happily Ever After.

  1. This is hard to explain but it works Every time.

You need a short water glass and a spoon
put the spoon into the (1/2-3/4 full) water glass, then place the spoon into the glass, then drink down the water with the spoon handle resting/pressing against your cheek.
It is simple and works every time.
I don’t know why, and it’s not scientific, but I do know that I have won many a bets in pubs with this method

  12. There are so many ways to stop the hiccups such as;

    1) Have a teaspoon of sugar, and place it at the back of your tongue
    2) Put your fingers in your ears
    3) Get scared
    4) Drink water
    5) Pull on your tongue
    6) Tickling the soft palate of the roof of your mouth with a cotton swab
    7) Hold your breath as long as possible
    8) Breathing into a paper bag
    9) Take an Antacid
    10) Eat Slower
    11) Don’t overload the stomach
    12) Avoid spicy food
    13) Drink in moderation

The most practical ways to do in everywhere would be number #4 and #7 but personally i think that number #4 is a way to go.

(p/s: almost everyone in the world drink water when they have hiccups before they know the other tips on the internet)

  13. Here’s one that’s never failed for me:

Hold a wooden pencil in tour teeth (crosswise, so it sticks out both sides of your mouth). While holding your nose, drink ten swallows of water and the hiccups will be gone. That’s it. It sounds weird, but try it and see.

  23. When you focus on hiccups, that is what causes your hiccups to disapear. For example all these steps and logics people have, actually the procedure of making the hiccups vanish is what you are focusing on.

    e.x.
Put a lemon slice in ur mouth.(You focus on how bitter the lemon slice feels.)

ex. Asking the last time you saw a white horse.(You focus on your memory)

So technically it is when you don’t focus on the hiccups that makes them disapear.

  38. - Repeated swallowing works for mild cases. Do this by holding your breath and repeatedly swallowing as fast as you can, or by slowly drinking down a beverage with as many swallows as is possible. It’s important that you hold your breath for as many gulps as you can. Placing a napkin over a glass of water can help moderate your speed.
    - Plug your nose and ears then swallow 20 times as fast as possible.
    - If you notice a friend has a case of hiccups, it is believed that your can ‘scare’ them away. Sneak up on them and give ‘em a good jolt (Be careful though ;) ). What? They don’t have hiccups? Do it anyway!
    - Relax, sit still and breathe in deep, slow, rhythmic breaths expanding and contracting your lungs completely.
    - Distract yourself. Sing a song, go over your 7 times tables (7 x 1 = 7, 7 x 2 = 14, etc) until the hiccups are gone,
    - Exhale completely and hold your breath for as long as possible.
    - Squawk like a chicken while flapping your arms and bobbing your head as if you were pecking at something. Bugawk!
    - Laugh. Think of something funny, or do something funny – see above.
    - Eat a tablespoon of peanut butter.
    - Stand on your head and drink small gulps of water from a sports bottle.
    - Exaggerate your hiccups by inhaling right as you hiccup – this will result in a long and loud “huuuaaagggghhh” that’ll either be funny or embarrassing depending on your environment, but after 2-4 of these the hiccups should be gone.
    - Take a shot of lemon juice.
    - Let a teaspoon of sugar dissolve under your tongue.
    - Think of the ugliest person you’ve ever seen. Now picture them naked, rolling naked down a hill or riding a bike and slathered in A-1 steak sauce.

  39. This technique never fails when have used it. Take a glass of water, lay backwards and sip it with your head upside down. Was taught to me by a DR use to live near – and it has never failed to work. He would use either this technique or sucking on a spoon full of sugar. One or the other never fails so said he… and the upside down water drinking has always worked for me and my friends. The upside down technique would not be safe with someone too young, too old or disabled. For this the spoon full of sugar would be safer as long as they are not diabetic.

  43. Take CaCo3 with sugar ( 2 tums) and a glass of water. This neutralizes and dilutes the acid in your stomach. It will not work every time on everyone but it works on many people. It may work a little better than a spoon of sugar.

  52. You have to relax your diaphragm, so you need to swallow as much as you can. That is why people recommend you drink water, as it is much easier to swallow when you have something to swallow. However, you have to do the physical swallowing motion more than you normally would as you drink, because that is what is actually going to relax your diaphragm and stop it from having spasms.

  79. A lot of people tell you to drink a whole glass of water or hold your breath to get rid of hiccups. However, those are only parts of the real treatment for hiccups.

I found this treatment for hiccups in an old natural remedies book.

You’ll need a glass of water and some walking space.

    Instructions:

Start walking slowly, pacing the room. Take small sips of water. With each sip of water, breathe in and then breathe out. The pattern goes like, breathe in, sip, breath out, sip, breath in, sip and so on.

It’s the fastest method of getting rid of hiccups I’ve used with a 100% success rate.

If the hiccups are harder than usual, you have to hold your breath for a while with every sip.

Hiccups are caused by the twitching of the diaphragm. It’s believed that distracting yourself will stop your brain from sending neuro signals to your diaphragm, stopping your hiccups.

Visualized them as strongly as I could, focused on nothing but pineapples. I was surprised to find that it actually worked. MLIA

  96. Hiccups are cured one way, that is, by stimulating the vagus nerve.

This is done by swallowing, pulling on your tongue, drinking a glass of water slowly, pulling on an earlobe, eating a spoon of sugar, etc., and so on.

Simply put, one of the functions of the vagus nerve, among others, is to regulate and control inner body muscle movement. When hiccups occur, stimulating this nerve will “re-set” the muscle of the diaphragm and thereby stop those annoying contractions called hiccups.

This is why every sure-fire cure of hiccups really does work, that is, if performing that particular “cure” will actually stimulate that nerve for that individual. It may not.

I stopped hiccuping after that, I was in shock I said what do you mean STEAL, I’D never STEAL. Then my supervisor started to laugh and said, I know that what her friends use to get rid of hiccups.

I know this hard, but try to relax. Hiccuping is caused by the diaphragm and air trapped. Relaxing by watching or listening to something soothing.

  106. The spoonful of sugar remedy pretty much works ALL the time. Sugar has some sort of “calming” effect on the stomach. If you look at the over-the-counter medication called “Emetrol” for vomiting, you’ll notice that it’s phosphorylated dextrose, a type of sugar.

For some odd reason though, whenever I recommend the “sugar trick” people are really hesistant because they think sugar is going to kill them. Suggest it, if they don’t believe it, let them continue with their hiccups…

  115. Drink water from the opposite side of the glass…that always helps me. I don’t think it’s the drinking as much as it is the coordination it takes – which gets your mind off the hiccups. Hiccups are just a diaphragm spasm – like any other muscle spasm. The other thing that always works for me is taking a deep breath (to stretch the diaphragm) and then let it out very slowly – in quick bursts – as you count backward from 20 to 0. This is kind of like stretching the muscle so it stops spasming.

The method I used and still use today is really simple: Just walk into a pitch dark room or closet, stay in there for 30 seconds or more, and almost always the hiccups go away. Has worked for me for over 30 years, and everyone I’ve told who tried it. Pitch dark is best, a room with night lights or other light doesn’t seem to work.

  127. Since grade school I kid did some research on hiccups and i remember him saying to hold your breath. There are many solutions but since everyone is different not everything will work. For example i was also told you can drink a lot of water but that never works for me. If i hold my breath until im almost blue in the face, that is what always gets rid of them for me. If you hiccup while you’re holding your breath then you have to start over so the trick is to hold your breath without hiccupping until you can hold your breath anymore and that always cures them for me but again it might not work for everyone.

  152. # Repeated swallowing works for mild cases. Do this by holding your breath and repeatedly swallowing as fast as you can, or by slowly drinking down a beverage with as many swallows as is possible. It’s important that you hold your breath for as many gulps as you can. Placing a napkin over a glass of water can help moderate your speed.
    # Plug your nose and ears then swallow 20 times as fast as possible.
    # If you notice a friend has a case of hiccups, it is believed that your can ‘scare’ them away. Sneak up on them and give ‘em a good jolt (Be careful though ;) ). What? They don’t have hiccups? Do it anyway!
    # Relax, sit still and breathe in deep, slow, rhythmic breaths expanding and contracting your lungs completely.
    # repeatedly swallowing Distract yourself. Sing a song, go over your 7 times tables (7 x 1 = 7, 7 x 2 = 14, etc) until the hiccups are gone,
    # Exhale completely and hold your breath for as long as possible.
    # Squawk like a chicken while flapping your arms and bobbing your head as if you were pecking at something. Bugawk!
    # Laugh. Think of something funny, or do something funny – see above.
    # Eat a tablespoon of peanut butter.
    # Stand on your head and drink small gulps of water from a sports bottle.
    # Exaggerate your hiccups by inhaling right as you hiccup – this will result in a long and loud “huuuaaagggghhh” that’ll either be funny or embarrassing depending on your environment, but after 2-4 of these the hiccups should be gone.
    # Take a shot of lemon juice.
    # Let a teaspoon of sugar dissolve under your tongue.
    # Think of the ugliest person you’ve ever seen. Now picture them naked, rolling naked down a hill or riding a bike and slathered in A-1 steak sauce.

What I use now is Rose’s Lime Juice. It’s available in liquor stores and is made by the same people who make Tequila Rose. All I need is a swig and my hiccups are gone.

Also, the longer you have hiccups, the harder they are to get rid of, so whatever you do, do it as soon as you know you have them.

hold your breath and “just swallow”. while you bend your head and neck down. And rest your chin on your upper chest. “while you hold your breath” swallow, repeat until hiccups stop. This can be done while you sit or stand.
it’s OK if you want to bend over forward at the waist.
you may do what is most comfortable to & for you.
    starting now.

  186. This has worked 100% for everyone I have suggested it to.
I get the look like I grew a “third eye” but it works.

Take a big glass of water. And put a single straw in it. TAke a deep breath – plug your ears with you fingers (set the glass on a table or have someone hold it for you) and keep drinking until you can’t drink anymore (e.g. until you HAVE to take a big breath).

  188. There are 2 ways that always work for me.

    1) Squeeze your ear lobe. (I know it sounds weird but it works. If it doesn’t get rid of it completely, it will dramatically decrease the intensity and/or frequency of it).

    2) Take 10 small swallows of something. (It doesn’t matter what it is you drink. Just take 10 very small sips in a row). If it doesn’t go away immediately, take another 10 swallows and it should most likely be gone.

  189. Ok, guys, I got something very practical, yet hard to explain how it works.
One method is to stick the index finger backwards between the ear and the head. Like architects used to hold their pencils (at least in my country) a while ago. Then softly put some pressure on the ear, as to press the finger harder against the head. A couple of seconds. It has worked with most people I’ve told it to.

The other one is to hold both hands in front of the stomach (bending the arms 90 degrees), as if praying or expecting something divine to fall from the sky. Both arms hanging straight and each elbow by each side of the trunk.

I really hope you understand my explanation. I’ve never understood how they worked. Might just be faith, but they’ve never failed, and since the first time I’ve never been in the need to count seconds or do anything troublesome, like drink water and stand upside down.

Let me know if it worked for you.

    Love to all

Keep your head straight and lifted up, and sip on a glass of water. The hiccups should go away as you are drinking or before you even finish drinking the water.

You need to drink water upside down or at some gradient to make your stomach muscles work in revers.

  246. For me it is very difficult to get rid of hiccups and they are also painfull. For me never works: holding my breath, drinking water very slowly, eating sugar (once I ate 10 tsb of sugar, so desperate I was), drinking lemon juice. Also they do not stop if someone scares me. The only thing that helps is me breathing in a bag till I fill that I have no air and I get tired. In that moment the most part of the oxigen in the bag is gone and I mainly breath carbon dioxide. This way the diaphragm is relaxing and my hiccups stop. This is actually the way doctors stop the hiccups in case of chronic hiccups. It looks strange to people that do not understand what I am doing but it is the only thing that works for me and I prefer to be strange than suffer.

  247. My method is like many quoted here: drinking water upside-down. I’m a teacher; one of my students showed me this years ago, and it ALWAYS WORKS EVERY TIME!!

Her/my variation is to bend over and drink from the “far side” of the glass (put your upper lip on the side OPPOSITE from the side that you normally drink from). Glass should be nearly full to make this easier. Drink a few sips while bent over pretty far, then come up and Voila! Sometimes I have to take a few more sips if they’re still there, but it DOES work for me! I’ll have to try the straw method some time, but you don’t always have one handy when you get the hiccups.

“You take a glass of water and a straw and bend over and drink the water through the straw! I learned this from Dr. Oz, and it creates opposite movement of the muscles used to hiccup. Works every time.

Now, to do this. with the glass in front of you up to drink, put your lips on the side of the glass farthest from your mouth, then bend over forwards like you were touching your toes. drink the water. the end. you’re welcome.

  288. 1. take little sips of water, trying to swallow every time you feel yourself about to hiccup and keep doing it without breathing too heavily – only shallow breaths through the nose
    2. drink from the opposite side of a water bottle (you usually drink from the side right in front of you, but for this, you need to lean over to the opposite side of the opening and sip the water)
    3. swallow a big chunk of something like rice, peanut butter, etc.

  289. This method has never failed to make my hiccups disappear. Take a breath, then take three sips of water, take another breath and three more sips of water. Repeat if you feel the hiccup impulse hasn’t completely disappeared. The secret is in doing the cycle of breath and sipping more than once.

  290. The method that I use and works is simple:

    1. Lie on your back on the floor
    2. Stretch your arms above your head as far as you can
    3. Tilt your head back so that you are looking at your
    hands
    4. Hold this pose for about a minute or two

It lifts your ribcage up and releases pressure on the space between your ribs and stomach. It has worked for me every time and for everyone I have told about it. Give it a shot!

Bend forward way down and start gulping. The water moves down the top of your mouth instead of the bottom. This works very well for me.

  300. I had tried everything to cure hiccups. I drank water, I had my husband scare me, I even tried standing on my head, but I never could find something to work until my husband had a bright idea. Try to hiccup. It sounds outlandish, but I tried to hiccup and I couldn’t. So finally I have a solution (at least for myself). I’ve found that I can’t half-heartedly attempt to hiccup. I have to stop what I am doing and really concentrate and then it will pass. If you have tried everything else and nothing has worked, I recommend trying to hiccup haha.

  301. The only flaw with this technique is that you must be distracted within the first few hiccups or else you are likely to be unsuccessful. Perhaps if another variable was added to the distracting, I don’t know. What I do know is that it work and I continue to marvel at it as baffle others with its results.

This is my observation and I can only hope that you all have as much fun using it on your self and others as I do.

  335. So what causes hiccups? Many doctors say agitating your phrenic nerves (nerves that stretch from your chest to your neck) causes hiccups. You can do this by eating too much or too quickly, drinking alcohol or carbonated beverages, swallowing air, or becoming emotionally stressed or excited. Some people have unique triggers. In rare cases, hiccups don’t go away. These hiccups are called intractable or chronic hiccups, and they may be a sign of an underlying illness.

How to get rid of them:

Drink a cold glass of water upsidedown- my mum recommended this to me and it always used to work

Hold your breath for ten seconds while reclining or lying down

Massage the upper, back part of the roof of your mouth.

Drink a large glass of cold water quickly

Breathe into a paper bag for a minute or two

    Eat a spoonful of sugar

Pinch the space between your thumb and index finger very hard for about one- two minutes. (I had hiccups the other day for about two hours and after doing this it worked).
