It’s Bonus time: Get Double Points for Your Answers Now!

Tags: , ,

For a strictly limited period, you can earn an extra 2 points for every question you answer.

‘Tis the time of year for saying “thank you”, giving gifts and rewarding hard work. Our way of saying “thank you” to you, the Yahoo! Answers community – for your hard work this year – comes in the form of this special bonus. Yes, it’s DOUBLE POINTS for every question you answer– four instead of two.

Picture 1

Why are we doing this?

We know you enjoy earning points on Yahoo! Answers, especially to move up through the levels. But we also know it can feel like slow progress at times, like a marathon… So, for a short while, we’re giving you the chance to sprint! With double points up for grabs, it’s a golden opportunity for you to make some big gains and go for the next level.

Has it started already? When does it end?

It’s live now from December 6th and will last for a limited period of time. Want to know when it will end?  Well, we’re going to keep that a secret for now…

However, if you follow us on Twitter we’ll give regular updates of how long is left…

We’ll also notify you here, on the blog, as soon as it closes. In the meantime, make the most of it!

How do I get started?

It couldn’t be easier to get involved. Just sign-in (or sign-up if you’ve not visited before) and start answering questions. The browse categories page is a great place to start.

Tell us what you think about our Double Point bonus

We think offering double points is something you will appreciate… we hope it’s not like one of those terrible Christmas presents you just want to put back under the tree. But do let us know what you really think – we won’t be offended, promise.

Also, do let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

  3. Hi ,

Thank you for your kindness .
Do you really add all the points , or sometimes Yahoo answers skip few points .

  4. Nice gesture.
Giving the extra 2 points for Choosing a Best Answer would have been much better, that would have maybe helped get more users to choose best answers instead of letting it go to voting where the cheating is rampant.
Now all those answering just for points with crappy answers are being rewarded for pointgaming.
This will be a good time not to bother answering and reporting those that post nonsense will take up more time and with all the spammers now getting double points there won’t be much time for those that do report and care about the quality of the site to do much answering.

  10. I definetly love this sight, because it;s the one place where i know i can get an answer from real people with experience. It is easier than having to look through the web, and also gives u a chance to learn from and meet new people! I admit that my weakness lies in giving out answers, i just need to find a catagory that is based on giving out advice, maybe not facts! Yahoo rocks!!!

  13. Points don’t mean so much to me now that I am beyond the points needed to make it to level 7. What I would love to see is having the answers in VOTING voted for. Too many people do not pick best answers and these questions are waiting in the wings to have their best answer chosen.

Why not give double points for people to vote so some of these questions in Voting can have best answers chosen already??

This would give people the opportunity to increase their percentage of best answers and perhaps award badges to those who deserve them.

  15. Whoopie for Double points, what are you going to do for us that are way past Level 7? What are we going to do with all these points? They are meaningless for me. What should I start a new account and put it to Level 7 just to say I took advantage of this? Start asking stupid questions just to “take advantage” of this offer? The worst part is we will see that spam bot garbage start leveling up as well now, as well as people with multiple accounts taking advantage of this to level up.

  19. It just seems like an added bonus to the point gamers to me. They abuse the system by having multiple accounts in order to vote for their own answers 8 times or more, and then they get rated “top” in their category. When I am a volunteer teacher to newbie internet users, it is necessary to teach them to NOT trust the results of their Google searches, especially Y!A because so many of the “best answers” are not really the best, but are marked “best” because of fraudulent voting.

  25. Well, it ought to make the “spammers” happy.
Just opened a ? and one of the answers was a link to a google search page. Nothing wrong with that, if the answer applies to the ?. But it was the answerers answer to every ? they answered. 22 ?’s, ranging from science to scuba diving.

The bonus points are a good idea. But, as far as answering more ?’s, probably not.

    Happy Holidays everyone

  36. I’ve already reached Level 7 so I don’t really need the extra points anymore. My activity here now is mostly Voting, and sometimes I’ll answer the really serious unanswered questions from persons needing genuine help. Not much point doing every question in the list for 2 (or 4) points when people ask the same thing repeatedly every day. How about bonus points for people choosing Best Answer or voting on Unresolved Questions?

Comment posted on December 6th, 2010 at 2:42 pm by Tony
  37. I’m at Level 7, so I don’t need the points. I concur with everything “Little Sister” said about this helping the point-gamers and not doing anything to address the issue of fraudulent voting.

  38. It’s the holiday season. Soon many children will be out of school for a couple of weeks, bored and logging in to Y!A to ask stupid and/or offensive questions, give stupid and/or offensive answers, vote thumbs down just because they can and generally be obnoxious.

In short, on average, you’re going to be giving double the points for half the quality.

I’ll probably take the last two weeks of December off from answering questions until the kids are back in school. I take all summer off for the same reason.

    2,500 points a Y/A T-shirt
    5,500 points a Y/A sweat shirt
    7,000 points a Y/A hooded pullover
    10,000 points a Y/A jacket.

Since I am above the 5,000 mark in the first place, it really has no bearings on me whatsoever in that I can now answer as many questions as I please in any given 24 hour period…But it will be an incentive for the youngsters to give as many quick answers as they can, and not necessarily the proper response of the best advice. Time will tell. Happy holidays, ALL !

    * Community Moderation that works reliably;
    * extra moderation powers to reporters with proven clean track record, to help with spam-fighting (e.g. a nuclear option that takes out all the spammer’s posts at once)
    * or a Y!A commitment to dealing with sections that have been made unusable for purpose by collective flouting of guidelines or concentrated trolling campaigns.

  64. This is pretty cool, though it DOES have some drawbacks…

As much as I like the double points, I like to *ask* questions, too… And my first question during this period got “chatty” answers as answerers tried to “earn” more points.

I hope you guys are ready to answer reports and take back all the points those answers are worth, because I think I’ll be reporting a LOT of chatty, garbage answers in the next few days… And not just for my own questions. (HINT: Spammers beware! Make an effort to actually ANSWER the questions!)

I wish people wouldn’t abuse their gifts so much. This is really cool of the Yahoo! Answers team.

There needs to be a LOT of work done to stop people from answering :
    “I don’t know either”
    “maybe”
    “lkdfu84likfut4u0gdklt8″
“stupid question” (when it is a very serious question)
etc. ALL — just to get “points” and raise their “status”

People should get points fro REPORTING deliberate spam, garbage answers, and other abuse. It ruins the the entire purpose of “answers”.

  82. I think there should be more attention given to the point gaming that many people do. I have no idea how it could be controlled but there should be a way. Also there are some people who complain about other peoples answers just because they do not like the person, it has nothing to do with the answer. Yahoo pays no attention to the people who disagree with being removed from a answer and only to the person who complains. I have had answers removed and told yahoo I answered the question and explained it to them to no avail. I know of others which very good answers that this has happened to also.

  84. This is an insult. Wow thanks for the imaginary points which we can’t do anything with in real life. What can we do with the points? Get to other levels. Then after we get to other levels, what can we do? Answer more questions. What does answering more questions do for us? Nothing, it wastes our time and rewards us with nothing but imaginary points. So who benefits from us answering more questions? Yahoo, since more answers means more pageviews, and more pageviews equals more money made from the ads on here. This “gift” is an insult. It’s like saying “well you’re already working for us for free, but we’re going to give you even more incentive to work for us, by giving you imaginary points that were only designed to encourage you to work for free”.

  90. Hey guys! As I suspect others do, I go through phases of frequently answering questions on Yahoo! Answers, and then I go through phases of NOT answering questions. Right now, I answer them a bit less. It’s all depends on the amount of extra time on my hands… I would have preferred x2 points a month ago, or even two months ago! Nevertheless, this is very thoughtful of the Yahoo staff. Thank you guys and happy holidays!!

  95. Points?? People really do this for POINTS?

Um, people, the points aren’t anything. Nothing. Here, have 10,000 points! There. Now you’re level seven with me!

People should earn something meaningful. Maybe not be as vulnerable to reporting trolls, say, if they are higher level. Points for their own sake don’t mean a thing. I’d sell mine for five cents if I could.

  100. This is for all the negative comments, because yahoo is giving double points for answers….. Don’t be so negative, this is just something yahoo is trying to do, so that more people participate! They should give something to those who are at the highest level, but life is not fair, and fair is for kids! but i am sure that the higher level people will find that maybe they will gain something from the double points, other than points, perhaps more people to talk to or get advice from? who knows? But i hardly think it is something to get upset about!

  101. I think it’s a good idea to give double points it may have people to give better answers. I really don’t go by the points as far as my answers goes, I just try to give the best answers I can. I would want someone to answer my question the best way. I love helping people a lot that’s why I give the best I can, there are so many people who needs help in so many different ways.

  104. I really like this idea, but dislike you’re only telling people who use Twitter about how much time is remains.

IMHO, it isn’t fair to “require” people to join another website to be on equal footing with each other. I’m not on Twitter, as I’m already getting enough messages in my life. I don’t need another, yet, I’d like to be as active as I can on Yahoo! Answers.

I feel it is unfair to people like myself who want to be fully active and accepted here. Twitter shouldn’t be requirement for full access to Yahoo! Answers, information. All I’m asking is you offer a second method that doesn’t require an external sign-up in addition to Twitter. IMHO, that’s not too much to ask.

Back to the bonus stuff, yeah, I like it! While I thought to take a break during the month of December, I guess this encourages me to maybe move my Answers vacation to January.

Thank you for the bonus points! :-)

  111. I post here in an attempt to help people who have genuine problems/questions about which I have some expertise. Your point system doesn’t play into that except to the extent that being labeled as a “Top Contributor” may cause some here to take my responses more seriously. Frankly, the points are a distraction. And the votes of the poorly informed count just as much as those with a great depth of knowledge on a topic. That exhausts much of the quality from your site. Regards.

  120. I’m seeing lots more answers being posted… and if you wanted more answers and didn’t care about quality, then you’ve succeeded.

Unfortunately, most of these new answers seem to be obscene, stupid, or otherwise better never to have gotten. I’ve spent more time reporting obscene/inappropriate answers then I have actually spent providing good answers.

This is a Fail. Fail. Fail.

  121. LOL, I rely more on best answers than 2 stupid points to advance me through the levels. 4 is great, but really, I’m on 659 points and aiming for level 3 (1000 points).

How the fuck will 2 extra points get me anywhere?

    Here’s the plan:

FOR EVERY BEST ANSWER, GIVE 20 POINTS INSTEAD OF 10. Now there is a Christmas special.

    Consider this.

  123. I never have understood this “points” stuff. Never did, probably never will. I wouldn’t mind more “freedom of expression”. I think that the good news is that I can recover points, on questions asked, faster. The down-side, as listed by another user, is people making up chatty answers, just HOPING for points value, rather than content. By the way, if I dont use, or understand, Twitter, HOW can I know when this “promotion” ends?

  141. Points make zero sense and many create multiple accounts to artificially boost their answers being chosen as best answer. The whole system is a sham and a simple internet search usually nets you a better answer anyway. Yahoo! answers has zero credibility due to no oversight or cited sources. I would go so far that many answers are often dangerous due to community only enforced guidelines.

  154. There is no point having lots of points when an account suspension causes everything to be lost without seconds. Don’t waste your time giving opinions because most people don’t even bother. Those who asked question already know the best answer. Even without your answer, they will still fare well. Your answer merely support their belief and it does not add any value except to make Y!A more popular to generate advertising revenue.

  158. I think your strategy should be designed to elicit higher quality answers and I think what you’ve done will have the opposit effect.

I take pride in the quality of my answers. If I fall below having a thrid of my answers selected as best, I feel I need to do better.

I found myself answering more questions this evening, but I’m sure the answers were below my standards.

Allow me to suggest for a future experiement, 3 points for each answer, and 15 points for each “best” answer.

I also think you should factor in the number of answers in awarding “best answer” points. If mine is the only answer, I don’t feel i deserve 10 points. If mine is the best from among 20, I feel I deserve more than 10.

Finally, I am irritated that questions I worked hard to answer three months ago are still in “voting.” I think questioners should be required to either pick a best answer, or proactively state that none is best.

    Thanks.

  163. The only thing this does is reward the folks who answer poorly and are going for quantity, not quality. You should have given people an incentive for being the best answer, but only when the asker chooses the best answer (voting doesn’t do well.)

I’d try to improve the quality of yahoo answers, not the hit count. But, then, you’re probably more focused on ad revenue anyway.

  200. For the poll, I’m surprised “Answer less (we hope not!)” is at 2%, instead of 0%.

Also, I like the idea for a store, mentioned in the comment posted on December 6th, 2010 at 4:36 pm by Kris.

  209. If people are in this for just points then basically that’s rather a sad thing. I always see Yahoo Answers as a community where others can try to help people. Does nothing come for free anymore ?

  210. Great, give us rewards so that the guy who’s run out of Mountain Dew bottle caps can bring his ‘dunno’ attitude to my serious questions for a free sweatshirt…
I also agree with Pam about 20pts for BA. :D

  249. When exactly did this end, because I was a frequent member of this website but I had been busy with school, but now that my break is coming to a close, I logged back in. Was this a promotion only for December or through 2010 because I don’t see the double points.
Oh well, I’m just wondering but I don’t pay that much attention, only if I were really close to the next level but I prefer answering questions for the sake of answering.
    Great idea Yahoo =)
