Episode 8 Winner

Congrats to Mike for Episode 8’s Best Answer. Here’s his answer:

First step: assume it was a mistake. “Excuse me, there’s a line here.” Nice and polite and works around 80% of the time. Most time a cut in is a simple error where the person has made a mistake. And if it’s not a mistake, it gives the offender a way out before I destroy their dignity.
Second step, escalate. Louder voice: “I think you haven’t have heard me, so I’ll speak up. There’s a line here and we’ve all been waiting.”
Third step, humiliation. “Oh, so you think you’re more important than us! Your time is more valuable than the rest of us! If you’re so important, why are you standing in line like the rest of us, Mr El Presidente? Why don’t you have your own special line if you’re that important? Maybe you would like me to walk in front of you with a bell: Make way! Make way! Get out of the way, peasants! An important person is coming through!”

Normally halfway through this rant, he will leave or the rest of the line will start joining in or laughing at him. Either way, good result.

Of course, it helps to be big, tall and just a little bit crazy looking.

  1. Ha, this was a question my earth science teacher asked in high school – and he went on to explain in great detail how, and I’ll be darned if I can’t remember.

  2. Trick question: it can’t be done. “East” means in the direction where the sun rises, and since the earth only turns in one direction, you’d always be going east unless you changed direction. If you flew east around the world in a plane and then came back to your original place of departure, you would be arriving from the west, which would mean you’d still be going East.

  3. okay so what if you’re traveling at night and the moon is new? where’s your east and west markers?

I would say 0 degrees. Because no matter where you begin towards East you’re always West of some landmark that’s west of you.

  4. I think you are going East until you are halfway around the world from where you started. From the Prime Meridian, if you go East toward China, and keep going, you eventually hit the International Date Line. Once you cross that point, you might as well have started going West, because it would have been easier to travel Westward to get where you are than Eastward. You can still travel in an Eastward direction, but you are West of where you started rather than East.

  5. Trick. You can go east as long as you like and then make a 180º turn to start going west!

  6. If you start heading east and do not change course, you will always be heading east.

  7. I do believe it’s impossible. The earth is round, therefore if you were to go east, you will still remain going east.
However, if you were to stop halfway around, you’d be going west to someone on the opposite side of you.
I do hope that makes sense…
But it’s like if you were to hold a ball. If you were to turn it to the right side, you’d still be turning it to the right side no matter how many times you turn it, unless you turn it the opposite direction.

  8. well, format your question. the best thing for you to do is to set your frames of reference. you can always determine how far you’ve gone east before actually heading west with respect to your established frames of reference. your movement is always relative to certain frames of reference. anyone of us. whether the plain you’re moving into is stationary or also moving there is nothing that can be without calculation

  9. I agree with wild sage (2nd post)
This reminds me of how, from north Dakota, if you fly north and go across the north pole, it is faster to reach Asia than if you go east or west. Try this on a globe. This is a little strange, you are flying north until you cross the north pole, and after you are flying south. That will never be the case going east or west.

  10. Can’t happen. Sooner or later on your eastern bound travels, you’re going to see a huge sign that says, “Here Abide Monsters”. If you ignore the sign and continue your east bound journey, you fall off the edge of the World and into the Great Abyss.

    Everyone knows that…Sheeeesh!

  11. You are never heading West if you are traveling East, but you cross from the Easternmost point of Earth to the Westernmost point the second you cross the International Dateline.

If you are either north or South of the Equator, what can happen is you go East a certain amount and you start heading Southeast or Northeast respectively if you don’t compensate your route to adjust for the Earth’s Curvature.

  12. I define westward any direction going counterclockwise with respect(pivot) to the north.
I define eastward as any direction going clockwise with respect to the north.

It happened that the Europeans called their land as “the west” because they did not believe that the earth was round.

So If you are heading eastward around the world to an infinite distance, You will arrive at the “west” (which is the topographic location which the European people had speculated) but you can never head westward.

So if the definition of west that this question is referring to is about the westward direction ( heading to the western direction ) , It is not possible because a person going left cannot be going to the right.

But if you define the west as a certain geographic location that comprises Europe (heading to the western civilization), You are always heading to the western hemisphere (unless you are in the western hemisphere)

THerefore my final answer to the question when the world is round is:

“If you go to the eastward direction, It can never go westward.”

“You are always heading to the “Western” territory unless you are in the “Western” territory, either you are heading eastward or westward.
If you are in the western territory, head eastwars until you pass the boundary of what is known to be as “west” then you are heading to the “West” but in a eastward direction.”

I wish it solves your problem.

  15. East isn’t the way the sun rises or the mood sets or the fish fly. It’s 90 degrees clockwise from magnetic north. But anyways, if you walk East an indefinite amount of time you will forever be walking East. If you start at one point and walk East and you want to know where you are relative to that point, you can walk 180 degrees around the Earth before you are now West of that point, but you will still be walking and facing East while approaching that point. Either way, you will never start going West if you walk East.

  16. East is always east, just like clockwise will always be clockwise.

North v south would be different though, but there is no halfway point where east becomes west. The International Dateline is only relevant when it comes to time, not direction.

  17. Considering east in only the counterclockwise direction while looking down on the world from the North Pole, it’s not possible to go so far east you start going west. That’s like asking “How far do you have to walk in a circle for you to start walking in the other direction around a circle?” “How long do you have to leave a clock on before it starts ticking backwards?”

Comment posted on October 28th, 2010 at 10:46 pm by Izen
  18. East is east, in the direction of the rising sun. You can go east for as long as you have the physical ability and the means to travel in that direction.

Personally I prefer doing loopty loops around the globe in a northeasterly direction (which means I end up going southeast for half the loop).

  19. This is bs.

It’ll only change when the direction of your movement changes.

  20. Unlike North and South (where you can’t go further in that direction past the poles) there is no point on Earth where once you go past it you are going the opposite direction. if you head West you will continue going West until you stop. the only way to go Eaast is to turn around.

  21. Earth is round. If you head the same direction, East for example and keep going, there is no way that you reach a stop point and go back.

  22. If you head east past the opposite side of the world, you’ll be west of where you started. Directions are taken in the shortest arc, so while you can get to LA by going east from NYC, it is considered to the west.

Of course, even when you get to the other side of the world, you’ll still be heading east. When viewed from the north pole, going east just means you’re going counterclockwise around.

  23. i dont think you ever stop going east. theres no east/west pole. now north south is different…if u keep going north eventually you start going south in the north pole. not so with east/west. you just keep goin east.

  24. Heading East is never ending, as well as heading West is also never ending…

  27. To all you who think heading east or west is never ending, you are wrong.

In order for east or west to exist you have to have a starting point.

You can travel 180 degrees west from your current point before you are in the east and inturn no matter which direction(of the two) you are walking you are heading west.

    Justification:

    1. We live on a round world. Therefore the answer can be NO MORE than 360 degrees.

    2. Direction is relative. So the point where you are standing would be zero in a relative measurement of direction.

    3. East and west are the only 2 directions on their plane. Therefore no more than 50% of each the plane can be attributed to either direction. Therefore no more than 180degrees east or west can exist.

    4. If you are in the west you cannot be in the east and vice versa. If you are in the east there is only one other place to go. West. Same holds true for the opposite.

(P.S.)Now if you think about the prime meridian – you can give an exact number. Most people would not though.

Although my answer would still be the same if you were thinking about the meridian. Although I would state the starting point to be the prime meridian instead of assigning the starting point to zero at creation of the concept.

I know a lot of you will be wracking your brains on this one, but its fact. :)

  28. If you are going east, you will never be heading west.
It is true that if you keep going east, you will end up “in the west”. Where that is, is what you can discuss. Maybe when you hit Hawaii? As that is the first part of the USA and The West you will pass when heading east.

  29. Well, if East means the direction the sun rises, then you can go East until the sun is rising in the opposite direction, because then you would be going West.
But in a sense, you would still be going East, but people on that side of the Earth would say that you are going West.
    So, Hmmmm??

  30. If you’re going east, you’ll ALWAYS be going east, no matter where you might find yourself… If you mean “where is the location known as “The West”, it varies by country or region, and time. (Yes, that’s why the school in Evanston is called “Northwestern U”. At one time, Illinois was in the “Northwest” of the US. And even though Vancouver BC has historically been considered part of the “Pacific Northwest” – the Northwest History room is even at UBC – it’s actually in the SOUTHwest of Canada.)

That said, I think Albert would say it depends on ones speed. As velocity passes the speed of light then time would start going backwards which would mean you could be heading west.

  38. If you are going east you will always be going east. East is a direction, not a landmark.

The interesting thing about this question is that it is in the bible. Jesus said “I will cast your sins as far as the east is from the west.” He meant that your sins will be gone forever because if you go east, you will forever go east.

The odd thing about this statement is that it was written 2,000 years ago when people believed the world was flat. This would only work of Jesus was talking about a globe! Jesus was talking about a round earth in a time in which they believed the world was flat.

    I found that historically interesting!

  40. With the current predictions, quite far. If you continue heading east long enough, sooner or later, earth’s magnetic field will topple over. The north pole will become the south pole and visa versa.
So relatively speaking, from that point on, you’ll now be headed west instead of east.

The other option is to aim for a point a few meters east of the magnetic south pole and then head there in a straight line. If you take your time trying to reach that point, there is a good chance that your heading will change from east to west without you having to change your direction, simply because you’ve allowed the magnetic pole enough time to let it drift east of your original destination.
All you need to accomplish this is some time on your hands, a GPS unit, an old fashioned magnetic compass and a set of very warm clothes. :)

  41. you can only go east west because of the north/south poles. When those change as they do every 22,000 years or so, east west changes as well. In terms of the universe there is no east / west as all directions are relative to each other. You can only truly travel in degress of light years. me know what I talk about caz me edicated in DC.

  44. East and West are cardinal directions on a given plane, they don’t reposition themselves based on your movement. As most answers state, you would never reach a point where you’re heading West by continuing to travel East. The International Dateline does not affect East or West, it just denotes the shift from one day to another as a de facto line on a globe, no different from the 24 time zones delineating the hours of day, but measuring date in relation to location of the globe.

Because we live on a globe, there is no end to our plane – after circling it and maintaining your direction, you’re repeating the cycle but still heading East covering the same ground.

  46. Technically you’re always HEADED East until you turn around 180 degrees and then you’re headed west.

However, I’d say you’re IN the west when the time is minus GMT as opposed to plus GMT. Australia is hours ahead of the GMT, whereas the US is behind it. That moment when you’ve gone from +GMT to -GMT is when you’re in the west.

  48. Because the Earth rotates at a pace MUCH faster than one can walk, or a plane can fly, you can walk eastward relative to the Earth, but you will ALWAYS be traveling westward on the Earth relative to space.

  50. If you imagine looking at the earth from a view that is looking directly down on the North pole, east will be any clockwise direction you travel in. Therefore, it is possible to travel east forever in the same way it would be possible to walk in a clockwise circle forever.

  51. The International Date Line (IDL) is a generally north-south imaginary line on the surface of the Earth, passing through the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where the date changes as a ship or airplane travels east or west across it. It is roughly along 180° longitude, (opposite the Prime Meridian), but it is drawn with diversions to pass around some territories and island groups.

Crossing the IDL travelling east results in a day or 24 hours being subtracted, so that the traveler repeats the date to the west of the line. Crossing west results in a day being added, that is, the date is the eastern side date plus one calendar day. The line is necessary in order to have a fixed, albeit arbitrary, boundary on the globe where the calendar date resets. In practice, of course, the Change-Date Line moves around the globe as the midnight time line (2400 hours local time), the moment at which the date changes to the next day at each point on the globe. This time is always approximately equal to 1200 noon on the opposite side of the globe.

  52. If you head east, 90°T on the equator you will continue indefinitely circling the earth. However if you commence at any other latitude but 0° and head east, 90°T you will start a spiral heading towards either the North Pole or The South Pole, depending on which hemisphere you started. Once arriving at the pole there is only one direction, one may head, south from the North Pole and north from the South Pole!

  53. LMFAO… I love how everyone is blowing it out of proportion.

SIMPLE: You can go as far east as you want. You won’t head west until you decide to change directions.

NOTE: You can circle the world a few times going east, that doesn’t mean your going west all-of-a-sudden.

  54. A better question would be how far NORT can you before you’re going SOUTH? At least I think so…the east and west thing is easy, because if you’re going “sideways” for lack of a better word, you’re always gonna be going east.

  55. If you go East and East only, then you’ll go East forever. If you go a bit North while going East, or a bit South while going East, you’ll know you’re going West once you’ll have reached the North and South poles respectively (center points). Hopes this clarifies.

  56. If you travel towards space at an eastward direction, but your speed is so slow that the earth turns beneath you, then however far up in space you got would be the distance it would take to go west while going east. :)

I don’t think that this is scientifically valid, because the atmosphere turns too, but it’s kind of fun to think about.

  62. Well if you are heading East (as long as you stay in the earth’s atmosphere) you can continue East as long as you want and you will never be heading West unless you turn around 180 degrees and continue that way. However, after being exactly half way around the world, if you continue any further East, you may has well just have headed West from your original location to make your trip shorter. Well thats my 2 cents, good day to you.

  64. it will be the same. you can proceed west or east in either direction. west bound or east bound. after all if you originated from one of them and travel in equidistant location in either sides, then you know how far you’ve gone east or west.

  65. It’s actually very interesting… whatever way you keep going straight, may it be East or West, you will end up in the same place you started off. It is impossible to be going two opposing directions at once.

Think about it this way: if you are arriving in the same place you started off from, you are going the same way. This is because the World is round (spherical to be exact) – if you look at the globe from a “bird’s eye” perspective, you will realize that you will keep going in a circle, in the same direction, thus returning to where you were. If you take a compass with you, your compass will also show you are going the same way. There is a Western and Eastern Hemisphere though, and as you travel you will occasionally enter or leave one or the other.

And the International Date Line has nothing to do with this! Strange, but that’s exactly the thing that throws most people off guard – it only affects the time when you arrive, not where you arrive! A great example of this is in Jules Verne’s novel, “Around the World in Eighty Days”.

So if you started out going East (or West) you will never find yourself going the opposite direction.

  68. Well lets first begin by solving the North and South problem. We all know how to travel north, by using a compass lol, but it is not until you hit the north pole that you begin traveling south. East and West should have the same effect. You can only travel East until you have come to a certain point, then you begin going West. I have no idea where that point lies though.

  69. After my first post i believe i am correct. If we travel north and we continue traveling north even after passing the north pole there would never be a south, because technically we are on the same path. There must be a point. If we travel East we will always travel east until we hit that point.

  73. For time zone purposes, the farthest east you can go is the International Date Line. Each time you go one time zone east, it becomes one hour (usually) later, until you cross the International Date Line, where it becomes 24 hours earlier.

For GPS coordinate purposes, the farthest east you can go is the 180 degree meridian. When you cross that line, you cross from a coordinate of 179 degrees, 59 minutes, 59 seconds, east, to 179 degrees, 59 minutes, 59 seconds, west. In other words, you step (or swim) off the eastern edge of the world and onto the western edge of the world.

If you head north or south, then there is a more real limit, at a specific point. When you are going north and reach the North Pole, you stop going north and start going south. When you are going south and reach the South Pole, you stop going south and start going north.

  75. There is evidence in the rock beds at the bottom of the ocean that the magnetic poles have and will continue to move around. Given enough time, North and South will eventually be opposite where they are now as will East and West. So, you would have to travel [your average speed multiplied by the amount of time it takes for the magnetic poles to switch] miles before you are going West.

  91. How far east can you go before you’re heading west?
    To make it short read the first paragraph, otherwise read all of this nonsense;
    ===========================================================
All these mean that anybody or anything going or travelling below the earth’s atmosphere ( 1 ) toward that sunrise point on the horizon with the direction of the earth’s rotation (turning around its axis ( 2 )) is heading or going so called east and the same goes for going toward the sunset point on the horizon except that you go against the earth’s direction of rotation (turning around its axis ( 2 )) and then it is so called going or travelling west, So when you are going east no matter for how long and wherever to stop to relax a little bit, when you start again going east if not sure about the east direction from where you are then wait till sunrise and if you go toward the point on the horizon that the sun comes out of it would be east and you will notice that you are going the same direction as you did before your relaxation unless you are naturally very confused as I am at this point of writing.
    ===========================================================
A section in the Koran mentions “The one and only God (Allah) of Easts and Wests”, As far as the space and time in our dimensions are concerned which is a special relative ( 3 ) form case governed by an absolute form case and also mentions “The earth’s east and west” so all the “Easts” and the “Wests” relate to a fixed defined point or origin in our rotational space including the east and west on our planet earth ( 4 ) that relate to an almost fixed point in our solar system called the sun that is not on the planet earth like the almost fixed north and south poles are ( 5 ) and the Earth’s axis is the imaginary line which goes through the north and south poles and around which Earth spins, so since the poles are located on the earth (north and south) we could go up or down (!!!) there and by passing the pole (N or S) we would face the other direction (S or N) but that is not possible going east since we can not get to that fixed point (sun) because it is not anywhere on the earth for us to go pass it by like the poles unless we really want to go toward the sun heading east and when we get there ask the sun’s people how we could head west (hope they don’t have any Yahoo out there to confuse people).
By definition directions east and west are meaningless without our time dimension which normally is observed on most parts of the earth ( 6 ) by the sun coming up and out in our sights from somewhere we agree to call east and going down and out of our sights somewhere we agree to call west and we also agree to choose a unit for the time called a second ( 7 ).
So Tell me if we are going (travelling) east confined in our earth’s atmosphere ( 1 ) or not since by definition going or travelling east means going toward the point where the sun rises every time on the horizon and if we continue going straight after we get to that point !!! in that case we never go nor see west again, otherwise we could travel east using the earth as a vehicle until we see the sun in the horizon in front of us (sunrise-east of us) and keep going until the sun goes above our head (noon time) and later it goes behind us (afternoon) and then later the sun goes down the horizon behind us (sunset-west of us).
So in nature by the human’s definition everything at any point on earth is travelling east on a big bus called the planet earth ( 8 ) and a common major key factor for finding east (direction wise) ( 9 ) is not by if the sun is in front or behind you, since we live in a relative dimensional universe, we have to have a fixed physical location or a benchmark (starting point) on earth in order to tell who or what is on east, west or any other direction of that particular location point that surveyors call the benchmark which has its own agreed coordinate system or systems kind of like the G.P.S. .
Keep in mind that either riding on the earth or any other vehicle takes time going from one point to another and in fact somehow we could chase or runaway from the sun (from being under or not under the sun) by adjusting our travel speed going east or west staying bellow the earth’s atmosphere ( 1 ) or see the sunrise and the sunset more than once a day by going faster than the earth’s rotational speed around its axis.
Please note that if we are travelling fast enough in either direction (east or west) we will see the sunrises and the sunsets but in order to determine the direction of the east on the earth you have to be on a stationery point on the earth and from that point of view wherever the sun comes up on the horizon that is east of you and if you go toward it you are going east as agreed (remember?) also remember that any point east of you could be a point west of somebody else since this is a relative matter and if you travel eastwards any point east of you would be west of you when you pass it or still would be east of you, since the earth is round you could look back and say that point I just passed is west of me now or you could say the point I just passed is east of me because if I keep going east I will get to it so it is a matter of personal point of view but in giving directions to others it is common to give them the shortest distance possible for the point they are going for.

P.S.: Be careful not to change the time like superman did by going faster than the speed of light around the earth !!!

( 1 ) Even though we could be above it and still have a night and day and a sense of east-west direction if we go around by the curvature of earth and keep a limited certain distance from the earth.
( 2 ) Earth’s axis is the imaginary line which goes through the north and south poles and around which Earth spins.
    ( 3 ) (adj.) relative, comparative
Estimated by comparison; not absolute or complete.
( 4 ) That looks almost like a round ball.
( 5 ) The locations that act like poles of a magnet.
( 6 ) North and south poles areas also go on the same rotational direction as the rest of the earth regardless of their sunrises and sunsets times.
    ( 7 ) (noun.) second, sec, s
1/60 of a minute; the basic unit of time adopted under the Systeme International d’Unites.
( 8 ) Except on the centers of ideal poles of the earth if you have neither volume nor mass.
( 9 ) Not considering any compass, any other artificial devices or stars which require training.

In the North/South dilemma, you are going North until you reach the North Pole and once you cross it, you are now going South. This is similar if you go South to the South Pole.

If you travel a little further, like just about 12.452 miles, you will be West of where you started. But yeah (like a what many are saying) you are still only traveling East, not West. You can be traveling East and end up West of your starting location.

  109. As the man said, you cannot ever head west if you are heading east, it is as simple as that. Once you head east, you head east.If you turn 180°, then you start heading west.

Having said that, if you turned 90° instead, which way would you be heading then (this is an intelligent question, as opposed to the first one)?

  112. The most obvious answer is if you go east and never change direction, you’re always be going east.

However, what east are we talking about geographic east or magnetic east? How will you determine you’re going exactly east? If you just use a compass, you will not be going true east. It also depends where you start from. If you start from near the geographic north pole you may actually end up going geographic west at some time.

  115. Thats easy! You can go exactly halfway around the earth, when you go the slightest bit passed that point it would have been faster to go west. You could also determain it by your position of where you are versus the placement of the meridian (infrront of or behind you) from where you are. Although, with technicly you could just keap going east forever, but to do that you would have to refer the point at which you started.

You will always be traveling east just as long as your velocity stays the same and you don’t change your angle compared to the lines of latitude (i.e. walking in a straight line). In a nutshell there is no switching direction based on a single point.

  119. How far east can you go before you’re heading west? You can head due east as long as you like until you decide to turn around and go west. Once you turn around 180 degrees, and only after you turn around, you will be heading due west.

East is defined as the direction in which the earth spins. No matter how far you travel in that direction, you will continue to travel east, even if you circle the globe multiple times.

More interesting is that Emily said, “If you are going east you will always be going east,” then immediately forgets her answer, stating Jesus’s use of this fact “would only work if Jesus was talking about a globe! Jesus was talking about a round earth in a time in which they believed the world was flat.”

In fact heading east would never turn to west on a flat Earth or any shape/surface I can think of – funny how religious belief is so unconected to our common sense.
