Changes to Fans, Contacts and Voting Limits

Many of you have voiced concerns about the misuse of the Fans and Contacts feature.

Firstly, we’re aware how strongly many of you feel about this and we’ve heard and taken on board your feedback: we’re sorry we’ve taken so long to address a problem that may have affected your experience of Answers.

However, as of today, we are now making improvements to how Contacts and Fans work on Answers to ensure that your experience on the site is better.

In addition to Contacts and Fans you’ll notice some changes to Voting limits on Answers.  First of all…let’s cover Fans and Contacts:

What will my Fans see?

Anyone can become your fan by adding you as a `contact`.  Once someone has added you as a contact:

  • Fans will get latest updates when you ask questions in the `From my Network` tab
  • Email notification when you ask a question

If you don’t want to allow fans at all – you can set this in your Preferences.

If you don’t want a certain member to be aware of this information you can block them from the My Network page.

If your Q&A and Answers network are marked as `My Contacts Only` on your`Preferences` page, Fans will not gain access to view your content or your network.

Want to know when someone has become your fan?  You can activate a notification in your profile page to receive an email when someone becomes your fan.

What will my Contacts see?

Contacts are those people you choose to add and you will be sharing your content with them.

Once you add a contact they will:

  • See your questions and answers
  • Get an update on the homepage in the `From my Network` tab when you ask a question
  • Have visibility of your Answers Network

Everyone likes to receive the kudos of having new `Fans` of their content and this change will keep the overall control of `who-sees-what` with you.

Keep watching this space – this will be just the first step in changes we have planned for how Contacts and Fans should work and the benefits they bring as we continue to make this feature work for you.

Changes to voting limits

We’ve noticed that many you in the Answers community are very avid voters!

To help you continue to feed this passion we’ve now increased the daily limits for the number of votes you can cast.  The new maximum daily are:

  • Level 1: 25 votes per day
  • Level 2: 50 votes per day
  • Level 3: 75 votes per day
  • Level 4: 100 votes per day
  • Level 5: 125 votes per day
  • Level 6: 150 votes per day
  • Level 7: 200 votes per day

So what’s stopping you?  Get voting!

  1. My limit right now seems to be zero. I get OOPS when I try to vote.

  2. I am one of the people that has been unable to vote at all since the ‘site maintenance’ began, and am still unable to do so.
I discovered others have this issue, too.

    We see “Oops”
and nothing else, and then the page returns with that blue button showing no vote has been cast.

Is there any word on when this issue will be resolved?

Also..stars that I give to questions do not appear to ‘stick’ now. They are gone when I return to the question.

I know that most Yahoo answers users have long hoped/preferred we could have the ability to either permit or deny someone from becoming a fan..before they are connected.

And we need more than 200 spaces to permit to block users, since some users in Yahoo create massive numbers of accounts to try to harass others. You block one and a dozen or more others may appear from the same individual. With multiple account abusers escalating, the 200 limit can be filled rapidly with just a few actual people. Unlimited blocking is necessary because reports of harassment often go unheeded or are not investigated.

Advice for harassed users to simply change our name doesn’t work..or to block the user doesn’t work if one has 200 blocked accounts and must remove one to add a new one.

I am no the most computer savy person, but I would hope that Yahoo could investigate ISP’s to see that there still remains a lot to be done to help prevent its users from being targeted for harassment by people that do not believe rules of civilized behavior are meant for them.

I hope these new changes help in some ways, but I do not see that they address the root of the problems.

    Thank you

  4. I am unable to vote on questions. I keep getting the message “Oops” everytime I try to vote on questions.
I discover that other people have the very same issue that I have. Yahoo needs to resolve this issue.

  7. Yahoo des realize that many of the people who were complaining were also some of the biggest abusers on here right? Perhaps if Yahoo were proactive about the violations posted on this site instead of reactive, it would definitely improve this ste.

  9. I don’t allow fans because of trolls. That means I can’t view other people’s profiles if they set it to contacts only as they cannot add me.

This is a flaw in the new update. Some people simply do not allow fans but have contacts that they want to keep updated with. Now they cannot because of this new update.

  10. There should be a third option to control who is allowed to view your profile history and network: both contacts and fans.

I have no problem with a fan adding me and having access to my profile but for personal reasons don’t add them back.

  11. Dear YA central team,
I just wanted to tell you what I told your UK and Italian colleagues. I am absolutely delighted that at long last you have effectively given us the ability to control access to our Q&A on a case-by-case basis. This is absolutely brilliant work on your part. Very well done indeed. Keep up the good work, and keep listening to us. Thank you very much.

  12. There really should be a third option of showing your content to both Contacts & Fans. This is a poor update which lacks options. Contrary to the above post it actually hinders and inhibits our control over our own Q & A.

Just because of a few overly cautious users (who mind you, may be the worst violators) this update affects us all. Luckily it doesn’t affect me as of now as I have Q&A viewable by all , so my fans can view them without me worrying over adding them as contacts , and the ones whom i’ve added as contacts but haven’t added me back also have their Q&A viewable by all so I can view their Q&A , BUT I’m sure in future this update will affect me if the third option isn’t put into place.
