Ask Mike: eBay’s first sale
Hey Guys,
Over the years, I’ve purchased a lot of stuff on eBay. Of course, I’m not the only one. Millions of products have been listed and sold via the virtual auction house since the site first went online in the 1990s.
But, among all the Beanie Babies, iPods, and grilled cheese sandwiches that resemble the Virgin Mary, what was the absolute first product to ever be sold? Here’s the straight scoop…
According to a Q and A section on eBay, the first item to ever be auctioned off was a broken laser pointer. Amazingly, someone paid $14 for the busted bit of electronics. The item was sold by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar.
Mr. Omidyar originally used the laser pointer as a cat toy. We assume he told the buyer that the laser pointer was no longer in working order, lest his precious feedback rating take a hit.
Some other interesting factoids about online shopping: People are expected to spend more than $144 billion dollars online in 2010. That’s up from $81 billion in 2005. What was that about Prince saying the Internet is “dead”?

Online shopping is only growing rapidly. They’re offering free shipping on pretty much every damn site. People hardly leaves the house for the mall anymore. Shopping centers are dead.

nice post
I had a question. Who is Lindo Korchi?
i like buying records off ebay. we have some stores that sell records but not the type of music i like. the only thing that sucks is waiting, atleast in a music store u get to personally inspect the vinyl. ebay has really changed over the years, it used to be a place to find obsure, rare and valuable items, now u can find millions of items that are worthless.
