Ask Mike: Calling shotgun

Tags:

Hey Guys,

This afternoon, I’m going on a trip. And there is one and only one thing on my mind. Securing shotgun.

For those who grew up on motorcycles, “calling shotgun” is another way of laying claim to the passenger seat before a car ride. If you call shotgun first, you get the preferred seat. If you don’t, you end up stuck in the back, where leg room is at a premium and fresh air goes to die.

But in order to properly call shotgun, one must know the rules. After all you can’t call it days in advance (people who try this are the scum of the Earth). I have always believed that one can only call shotgun after everyone who will be in the car is outdoors. That’s just how I roll. But I wanted to check the Web for other opinions on this most important of matters. Here’s what I found.

According to “The Official Shotgun Rules” website (yes, there is such a thing), not everyone needs to be outdoors before shotgun can be called. With tongue firmly in cheek, the site explains, “some people choose to…require that all occupants be out of the building before Shotgun can be called. This does not work. It leads to everyone calling Shotgun at the same time and often ends in physical violence.”

Interesting point. I have not personally witnessed any acts of violence as a result of simultaneous shouts of shotgun, but I could certainly see it happening. Especially on a hot and humid day, or when there are three people in the back seat. Is there anything so humbling as sitting in the middle of the backseat?

What are your rules for calling shotgun? If the person in the passenger seat gets out to run to the mailbox, is his or her position up for grabs? What if one of the passengers is the significant other of the driver? Do the rules still apply? Leave a comment below.

Thanks for reading,

Mike

Just two weeks into the World Cup and we’ve already seen ingredients for a blockbuster movie. Landon Donovan scored a late goal in added time to seal perhaps the most dramatic time in American soccer history. USA advances!

Now you’ve all had chance to check out the talent from all of the countries participating in the World Cup we want you all to take your pick of your team of the tournament by picking the top 11 players you would have in your own World Cup team for our World Cup featured question:

Who would you choose to be in your World Cup team of the tournament?

To ask this question we’ve partnered with Brooks Peck from our very own ‘Dirty Tackle’ on Yahoo! Sports.

At the end of the tournament Brooks Peck will be choosing his own `Team of the Tournament` and the first response to match his will get the best answer and 110 BONUS POINTS — that’s 10 points for each player on your team!

Remember, as with any soccer team you’ll need to include just ELEVEN players:

-         A goalkeeper
-         Defenders
-         Midfielders
-         Forwards

But the formation is entirely up to you!   One more `rule`: The players must have appeared in the World Cup, too!

Once you’ve formed your team, why not share it with your Facebook friends by publishing your answer to this question?  See what they think of your team choice and if they want to make their own!

Ask Mike: Don’t Tread on Me

Tags:

Hey Guys,

Anyone who saw Team USA’s last minute victory over Algeria in the World Cup was sure to notice the American fans, cheering like maniacs. More than a few had flags and hats, emblazoned with a coiled snake above the words, “Don’t Tread on Me.” I knew the flag was originally used during the Revolutionary War, but I didn’t know who came up with it and how it became an iconic image. Here’s the scoop…

The flag is called the Gadsden Flag and it was originally inspired by a drawing of Ben Franklin. According to Gadsden Flag History, in 1754, Dr. Franklin drew an image of snake cut into eight separate pieces. Each piece represented a part of the colonies. Under the snake were the words, “Join or Die.” Founding Fathers is quick to point out that this drawing had nothing to do with America’s coming war with the British. This was rather a “plea for unity in defending the colonies during the French and Indian War.”

But the snake didn’t disappear with the end of the French and Indian War. By the time 1775 rolled around and another war looked inevitable, the snake was everywhere: In newspapers, on buttons, and even on legal currency, according to Founding Fathers. But there was a big difference. The snake was no longer cut into pieces. Instead it was coiled, angry, and appeared ready to strike.

As for the famous phrase, “Don’t Tread on Me,” Gadsen Flag History writes, “We don’t know for certain where, when, or by whom the familiar coiled rattlesnake was first used.” However, the site does explain where the flag first “entered the history books.” Apparently, “some of the Marines that enlisted that month (October, 1775) in Philadelphia were carrying drums painted yellow, emblazoned with a fierce rattlesnake, coiled and ready to strike, with thirteen rattles, and sporting the motto ‘Don’t Tread on Me.’”

But if the flag was inspired by Ben Franklin, why is it called the Gadsden Flag? Gadsden Flag History writer Chris Whitten does a fine job of explaining. Colonel Christopher Gadsden presented the flag to Commodore Esek Hopkins, because, Gadsden “felt it was especially important for the commodore to have a distinctive personal standard.” More than 200 years later, it’s still all the rage. Eat your heart out, Betsy Ross.
