Advanced search update

Tags: , , , ,

Following our changes to the Search experience on Answers last week we received a lot of feedback from you, the community, around the changes we made.

Advanced search changes

We’ve reacted to your feedback to make a few additional changes that now allow you to add parameters to the URL, to allow you to better sort your search result. In order to do this, here are the bits of code you’ll need to add to the end of your URL to sort your results:

&orderby=+date (to sort by most recent)

&orderby=-date (to sort by oldest)

For example a search for “dogs” produces this URL: http://answers.yahoo.com/search/search_result?p=dogs

If you want to sort by the most recent results, simply add “&orderby=+date” to the end of the URL:  http://answers.yahoo.com/search/search_result?p=dogs&orderby=+date

We will look to add these filters within the page itself over the coming months.

In addition, we heard from the community that search terms within quotation marks (“and”) were returning no results.  We’ve adjusted the system so that this no longer is the case, and “and” now produces results.

Additional changes

Last but not least, we’ve also taken this opportunity to fix some other bugs on the site:

  • For Internet Explorer users we’ve fixed the layout issue on the Ask/Answer/Discover banner
  • We have also made changes to content deletion.  Previously, when you deleted your question or answer, it was still showing in the public view of your profile page.  From now on when you delete a question or answer, it will be entirely removed from your public profile page

Thanks for your continued feedback on our latest release, and, for helping to improve Yahoo! Answers!

  2. Great, appreciate it.

But, it does not solve the problem of Advanced Searches saved as BookMarks in the “old” Advanced Search no longer working. We spent a lot of time creating those Bookmarked Searches, and have depended on them for, literally, years.

That’s all I’ve checked, so far, but, since there was no mention of “answer_count”, I’ll wager that was not included in the “fix”, or was it?

Just wanted to get my comment in early, as it takes a while for it to actually “appear” to the public, while appearing to me as if it has actually been “published” to the public. Why does that happen?

  4. Hi:

Just tried your Advance search , and it sucks, it can’t find what I ask for without a bunch of garbage. Or when ask it to look for somthing specific – It says it can’t find it when I wrote it correctly, Why it is when you guys got something that’s good and it works , You got to ruin it. Now I can’t go beyond question box Number 1. When I click box 2 or 3 and above – it tell me – ” no answer yet” . When I dam well there is . Ever heard the expession if is not broke Don’t fix it. Personally you guy where a hell of a lot better in the 1980 than you are now. Why don’t you get some programmers who know what the hell there doing. Instead of some idoits out of college who don’t know what the hell there are doing . May you need to go back to basics

    Thank you for you time.

  5. Pretty much a disaster so far! I am, like almost all Y/A users very frustrated that there is a bug that prevents looking at my own answers beyond the 2nd Page.

Also, “Search Questions” has become “Search Answers”, with no apparent way to search by Question content. Amd when I put Answer content — even several consecutive words into the Search box, the Answer I am looking for is not among those that are offered at all.

All would like to see email notifications of Comments that are added to a Comment “string” in which we have participated. like the ones we get for “New Answers” to our questions.

Like so much of things produced in the last couple of years, the new version of Y/A looks better, but in practice does not do the job anywhere near as well. An “improvement” like Jay Leno’s sally into primetime: Things were just fine as they were. So redocarate if you must, but leave the format as is, PLEASE!

  6. Another sad day, asking your users to fix url codes for the mightly Yahoo. Hang your heads in shame.

Is this post also telling us to forget about all the other problems we reported? How hard can it be to change the time parameters. Just change the 7 days to 4 days. It should be a simple fix in the code.

  7. That’s nice, but I find tonight that as I look back at the answers I’ve given to previous questions I am only able to access the first full page of the history of questions that I have answered. Pages 2 and on of my answer history do not show any results. I like to look back to see if any feedback has resulted from the answers that I or others have given to questions, as well as to vote for “Best Answers” to those questions.

Is this a temporary glitch, or is there something more that has caused this? (I use Firefox as my browser, btw, if this has any bearing upon this phenomenon.)

  8. I still think the “advanced” search is a pathetic excuse for any search. In this day and age, why would anybody have to tinker with the URL? Why can’t we search our own activity? There are so many meaningful improvements that should be addressed before playing with colors and rearranging columns.

  13. this new yahoo is completely ridiculous, i search something and get the complete opposite of what i am looking for. and then i type that SAME PHRASE in google and sure enough there is a listing on the results page for yahoo answers with all the questions that relate to what i typed in! how sad is it that you cant even search yahoo and get anything close to what you typed in but when you put it in google it shows all the yahoo questions relating to your search.
