Choose a “Best of Answers” earn 100 points!

On Yahoo! Answers, there are lots of ways to receive recognition for hard work, quality Answers, and interesting Questions—they take can take the shape of thumbs up, stars, or Best Answers– these are all controlled by you, the Answers community.

In addition to this, Yahoo! Answers also has something called the “Best of Answers” module. This rotating module featured on the Answers homepage showcases some of the quirky and interesting content that we come across on the Answers site. Typically this content is handpicked by a combination of Yahoo! Answers team members and editorial team members who surf the site looking for interesting questions that might pique your interest.

Best of Answers Module

In addition to the “Best of Answers” module, every so often, a question from Answers is also featured on the Front Page of Yahoo—visible to literally millions of Yahoo! users in a single day.

We know that each day, each of you, come across potentially hundreds of interesting, quirky, and fantastic questions that YOU consider “the best of Answers”—so we want to see them!

What’s the catch, and what are the rules?

  • Questions must have been asked and answered within the last 3 months – freshness matters!
  • No questions containing profanity, obscenity, relating to sex, alcohol, etc.
  • Questions must follow the Community Guidelines
  • Answers should be thorough and complete and should NOT be plagiarized. Here’s an example of a good question and answer: Is eating the inside of an orange peel good for you?
  • Question and answer should be relatively free from typos and grammatical errors

What do I get if my question is picked?

If we select your question and feature it on either the Yahoo! Front Page or in the “Best of Answers” module, we’ll award whoever suggested the question to us, 100 extra points on Answers.

Ok, so where do I submit my questions?

Think you have a winner on your hands? Submit your questions to us via email at: y_answrs_favorites@yahoo.com

If we select your question, we’ll send you an email notifying you that your question has been selected and you should see the bonus points in your account shortly.

We can’t wait to see what types of questions you send our way, so start searching the site, scouring your watchlist, and sharing your favorites with the team!

  4. Oh, I don’t know about this.
It looks like frivolous fun. Do you think it’s wise to mix business with pleasure, and financing it with the business’ funds?

A finder’s fee is a good idea, and the amount seems appropriate. I reckon it’s okay, as long as the bank can afford it.

Can I just send jokes? Just a few? Occasionally? A couple? maybe one?

  8. I’m still just a teeny bit curious as to how you’re planning to finance this.
You obviously have a large misc. fund so nobody will get onto. (psst. but I won’t tell)(shhh)

  10. What a fun way to perk up the site and get folks more involved as a sharing community. Not only does the submitter of the winning Q/A get the thrill of seeing their suggestion up there (a pat on the back for knowing how to spot a good thing), but the Asker and BA also get the thrill of seeing their insights and knowledge up in the limelight. How terrific a pat on the back that is. Even the non-BA answerers get to share in the thrill. They may not have won the BA itself, but their answers will still be out there where they may be of help.

Just an added note: Another incentive to be careful how one answers a Q…one can never know when one’s words will be highlighted for all to see and judge.

  21. A great way to further improve the site, though I suggest that we should also have a way to make respondents to questions responsibile and mature individuals not give inappropriate response for fun sake. There should be a 3 strike rule that if ever you’ve been reported more than three times due to violations, a suspension and a penalty be imposed to habitual offenders. There should be a check and balance to these social site like this one

  22. The only thing is, the answers teams has always shown a favortism bias toward certain users (perhaps they think the same as the team), some users often make “the best of Answers” repeatedly with mock or remedial questions while other users have never once been given the opportunity to appear on the best of Answers, no matter how many questions they ask and how good some of their questions are.

  23. It’s nice that Yahoo is doing this and everything, but we all know that with many good questions, grammar is hard to find. I don’t really use grammar on this website. Another thing is that with good questions, there are always trolls who show up and ruin it with bad grammar and teenagers who leave an answer and so many parts of it are not capitalized. So, I’m just saying that grammar will be hard to find even on the nicest questions.

And about the points: they don’t make a difference. I am on level 5 and there is nothing fun to do with them except earn them. Spending them on avatar products would be nice. But currently, I am working on not earning points because it’s really addicting answering questions and I get hooked on to that really easily. Yes, I have a Yahoo addiction.

  49. Points should be able to be spent on things other than asking questions. Please don’t discriminate against teenagers, as I am one, and I am able to spell well, try to answer as many questions as I can if I have answers, and don’t care how I look in the community’s eyes. Some teenagers actually try to keep websites appropriate for young children. Before you discriminate, check everywhere you can before making a remark.

  53. so who cares if the grammar is not good and if there is no capitalization and punctuation! what difference does it make! this is not a college english literature report! and please don’t discrimininate against teenagers, some of them (not me) use correct punctuation and captilization. as long as you can understand what the person says, that’s what matters.

  90. Why doesn’t the asker get the 100 points? That’s pointless, why would anyone bother writing out ‘best’ questions if they don’t even get a reward? That’s what Y!A is about – accumulating useless points. The asker and best answer should get 100 points, but that’s the way Yahoo Answers is – makes no sense and is just here to irritate people with their irrational and unfair ‘logic’.

The same holds true for the authors of great answers.

  111. One problem that I think needs to be addressed is that there are many questions that are unresolved (or resolved by votes by people who get friends to vote for their answers without regard to whether an answer is remotely correct). For example, I answered a question that is unresolved because, although I gave a detailed and factual answer at least two people gave the same misinformed and incorrect answer and one of those answers has been voted as a “Best Answer”. It could sit for months waiting to be resolved (and the basic question is asked frequently, so it would be a good candidate for the Best Of Answers but no best answer is being selected). That is very frustrating. I make a point of trying to answer a few unresolved questions by finding those questions every few days and voting on ones that I can.

Oh, and this is to the people that work Yahoo! Answers: There should be more sub-categories beneath Books & Authors. Like, Twilight, Lord of the Rings & Tolkien, Harry Potter, Narnia, etc. and Other. That would make my life like .5% better than it already is.

  117. I’m having a hard enough time getting John his credit for best answer he gave me for his sliced bread ban answer! It’s been 4 hours since he answered me, I click his name and get nothing where I can rate it best answer and the same happens when I click on my name. One time before the choice to call someone’s best answer was right on the screen. Now I can’t for the life of me find the darn thing.

  119. I want to participate but also want someone that really cares to answer something that i have researched but in a specific field where access to the info is limited to my access.
I really want to ask some important specific questions; however i find too often many people want popular questions that are easy for them to answer.
Like they have a friend ask a specific question and even then give a thoughtless lazy answer to it.
So how can i ask a question that requires thought & specific research and background information that i need &requires work on the part of the person that’s to answer?
Yahoo team would you help me out!
As these questions should be categorized by subject & experience so people can get worthwhile feedback.

  122. You all do come up with great ideas, but this one thing I am about to comment on, is confusing: how come when people pour their hearts out to answer a question that they believe in, they have to deal with people giving them thumbs up or down to how they may feel inside? For people dealing with low self esteem- not a good thing. I think that people should have an option to like a question, I guess, or say nothing at all but I don’t think thumbs up and down are necessary and just another way to promote cyber-bullying.

  124. This is good idea to encourage participants to come forward and pick best answers. However, I do feel that it is a futile exercise to pick the “the best answers” because the persons who ask the question aret he best judge to determine which is the best answer and what answer satisfies their inquisitiveness which they might have felt before floating the questions. Now to pin point the best answer now by the community is just like putting the cart before the horse.

  135. — OK its a fair idea :-) , though I wonder why the person who suggests the question & answer gets the big dose of points and none to the person who answered the question or the one who came up with an interesting question…shouldn’t they get a few of those points?
    — ALSO it would be better if you had a 2 or 3 button process ON the answers box similar to the interesting question button, that would be easier than having to find the email and then mail in a copy.
