Changes to the Answers Homepage
The next time you log into Yahoo! Answers you may notice things look a little bit different. We’re rolling out a new homepage and navigation over the next few days. Don’t worry: if you don’t see the new changes just yet, you will soon.
We’ve made quite a few changes to the homepage, so to make navigation a bit easier, we’ve broken things down for you by section, so let’s get started.
New Answers Homepage
1- New Navigation
You may have noticed that atop the Answers banner, there are four new, navigation tabs: Home, Browse Categories, My Activity, and About. Each of these tabs (as well as the green Answers banner) will stay with you throughout your experience on the site, making it easier for you to get to the places on Answers you care about most.
New Navigation
Home: This brings you back to the main page of Answers, where you can see the Best of Answers rotating module, the link to the Answers Blog (which is now on the right hand side, as well as the most recent questions posted on the site.
Browse categories: more about this below
My activity: From here, you can go directly to your Answers profile, view your network, your network activity, and even edit your preferences.
About: Learn all about Answers, revisit the Community Guidelines, check out the leaderboard, Suggestion Board, and visit the Answers Blog.
2 – Browsing categories
New Category Browse
On the old Answers homepage all of the categories were permanently displayed on the left hand column, hogging up homepage space that could have been used for valuable questions. We’ve decided to tuck the categories away under the top hide-away menu where you can easily access them any time, or, if you want to view them all at once, just click on the browse category tab to be taken to the “All Categories” page. From here, you’ll be able to peruse all of the questions that are: open, resolved or in voting on the site.
3- An updated look and feel
Over the past few years we’ve heard from quite a few of you that you love the Answers green but it’s just a little too green. So we’ve taken your feedback to heart and have toned down the green just a bit and have replaced the white background with a light blue that is a little easier on the eyes. Our smilies (4) have also received a facelift and look a bit more polished throughout the site.
Additionally, you’ll notice that the page feels a bit wider—one thing we heard from you when we introduced the new category pages several months back was that you liked the extra space. This extra space allows us to display even more questions on the homepage, making it easier for you to jump right in.
But wait, there’s more!
This release doesn’t just include cosmetic changes—we also included quite a few backend bug fixes, as well as a few feature requests, like updating the category leaderboards much more regularly. Starting today, category leaderboards will update on a daily basis instead of weekly.
Please note they will NOT be real-time, but will update at the end of each day (PST). This means at 2pm PST on Thursday, your points total will show as it was at 23:59 PST on Wednesday.

While I don’t mind the change. I absolutely hate the Green top header. It’s TOO Green. What was wrong with the other one that people thought that it was too Green? This is even worse.

I like it but I have to agree that the color scheme seems a little obtrusive and I would tone the colors down or soften them.
i like the idea of those changes but maybe you should have asked the fashion people what colors would have went together
Very interesting indeed, especially the daily update feature. You will have to be careful though about people using multiple accounts to bump up their tallies
Maybe we can have an option of colors to choose from for our own viewing preference that we can pick.

The new green is just too bright, and the whole blue on green is just an awful clash.
Someone else thought the OLD one was “too green”?? What??? This new green is a eye-shock every time I see it. The old green was much, much kinder on the eyes.
I agree with what someone else said… pale yellow would be a little more attractive instead of blue. Or maybe a lighter green. And change the header’s green back to the old shade… this one is horrible.

You should do something about the green–it’s too bright! I was perfectly happy, by the way, so now you have the chance to make me unhappy. Hope you don’t.
I don’t like it at all. The fancy font w/ the modern doesn’t mix well. Too much green… and the blue background is UGLY! Keep it how it is… even modernize it some. Just don’t… make… it…. that!
You still don’t have any changes that matter to me. You really need to revamp the entire search system, add a way to search our own individual activity, and be a LOT more responsive to problems, including troll posts that are obviously not “meaningful” or just repetitive juvenile crap.
So far it’s looking tidier, cleaner.
Which is what I like.
A good design is one not where everything possible has been added, but where everything unnecessary has been removed.
De-clutter, simplify.
Seems par for the course for Yahoo… create a format, give everyone time to become accustomed to it, and then CHANGE IT!

I think the only thing YA needs is a Reply button to other peoples answers some times an answerer has all but one fact .. or get something half right .. it would be nice to just add something to anothers comment .. it could be awarded on a point basis etc etc .. or limited . etc etc .,. but that would be nice .. it would also be nice if everytime i got an email from someone wanting to be my contact the links provided ACTUALLY WORK .. because for the past month or so they have been bringing me right back to myyahoo answer home page ..
I am glad to see some of the problems fixed on Answers. Have been using Answers for a long while. A very useful information tool. One of the best actually.

“My Activity” is useless.I can just as easily go straight to my my profile by clicking my avatar.

The drop menu for the categories I like. But you should have a drop menu for subcategories also. Speaking of categories, when are you people going to add new more categories. You need a paranormal category. A jewelry category. Metaphysical category. Pseudoscience category.
I hate the new colors. PLEASE change them. The blue is lame and the green is way too dark. I liked the old colors. Put them back.

This blue and green combo reminds me of the standard windows desktop image…. yeah, that’s right… the one that everybody changes the moment they buy a new computer… ick!

I like the update for the most part. I like the navigation header a lot. I hate the blue. It clashes with the green. I hope you guys change that. Otherwise, it’s fine. I like all of the navigational changes, but the colors could be much better and a little more subtle.
i love how you can go straight to your profile, but wish you could search for just open or just closed questions in the search bar….
also, the people who said it was too green before are crazy. it may have been a lot of green, but at least it was a toned down light green, not a neon forest green with a clashing, tacky blue!

There are still only 20 questions listed per page, and now they are further down forcing the users to scroll to see them. Previously at least a couple were visible right off which would be motivational to people to begin answering.
on the side with the blog and allow questions to be plainly visible upon entering.
Best of Answers should be in the box (and bring back that category listing for them too
I’d like to see the tabs appear below “ask – answer – discover” as this would be more convenient.
I do like the bold green
I like it but the old way was simple and too the point. My biggest upset is the “My Profile” button that has been removed. If that came back it wouldn’t be a problem I just hate having to go to the center of the page when I am so use to it being on the right. Overall I am not a fan.
I havn’t been able to post a question since the change =/ Some kind of bug after the I hit the submit button

I also do not like the new look – when someone uses this at work or school, it’s too visible for someone who wishes to have a little privacy. There wasn’t anything wrong before w/ the interface. With so many users, and its grand popularity, why a chance would be taken to stir something already so nice and popular is hard to understand. Why take a chance on losing some participants?
I love the green! Its boldness brings attention to where the main buttons are. I think its fine and you just need to get used to it.
I don’t know if I like this. It’ll take some getting used to….
yall should have made the header light blue instead of the background.

I agree that the color scheme is off.
But my biggest concern is whether this will use more memory to run. I have dial up. Many times, changes in the way a forum runs things means I can’t use it any more.
I hope the changes include removing the insulting Thumbs Down buttons and eliminating the immoral and pathetic Report another user buttons which encourage bullying and sets us upon each other like fighting dogs. When will Yahoo! Answers begin to strive for a democracy of answers instead of a dictatorship of censorship, bullying, and a TOS made up of arbitrary crimes and harsh punishments? You’re appealing to the lowest common denominator and it’s been that way from the beginning, so I can only assume that’s the sort of people I’m dealing with: petty tyrants, that can’t see beyond this silly game they’ve made here and realize it’s a sick and twisted way of looking at life, one best abandoned.

i should not have to click back 3 or 4 times to get back to the section or page that i was at when i selected the question to ask… once the question is submitted, i should automatically be brought back to the page that i clicked to answer the question in the first place… this is my biggest issue with Y! answers, constantly hitting the back button to get back to where i started, instead of constantly moving forward…

First and foremost … I LOVE the blue on the sides of the site. Love love love it. It makes the website so much nicer to look at, easier on the eyes, not as bright. I hated the grey/white lines at the side. So that’s definitely a huge improvement alone right there.
The green navigation banner/bar … I think it may be a little too green. Perhaps a lighter green would be better, or even better in my opinion, a light shade of the Yahoo purple would look nice. Green and blue is an odd color combination, but I still like it in contrast to what there used to be. I also agree with a previous suggestion … make it customizable! Orange, purple, red, yellow, pink, blue, etc … lot’s of sites allow such customization.

Finally. Looks a lot better. No offence. But I always find Yahoo do great products that are usually the best available but their let down by the presentation.
Almost every product is just but ugly and pixelated, like u can see the pixels used to create the layout, like someones drawn it in Microsoft Paint.
I’m sure its not beyond you Yahoo to put some better graphics and layout on your site…
I agree, this new color scheme is much more green than the old one. Also, the pale-ish blue doesn’t go well with the super-vibrant green header. I suggest you tone down the green in the header and switch the background back to white, or else pale yellow/green.

Honestly? I’d rather stick with the old Y!Answers page.. It was much more solid, mobile friendly, and had better colorways. The dark green shades just don’t really match nor does the format.

The post a comment box (this one) should not pop up at the end of all the comments. It should pop up at the top; so we don’t have to slew to the bottom of very long pages to get here.
People with eye problems frequently cannot see blue very well. I suggest you consult someone who has taken human factors engineering to pick out the colors you would use on the Answers web site.
I would appreciate your team concentrating on substantive stuff… like how to prevent frivolous down thumbs and questions that are too incomplete or nonsensical to answer.
And FINALLY (yes I am shouting because you’re not listening) you have to notify answerers as they are answering when a question is deleted during that answering. I have literally wasted hours answering questions in detail only to find they were deleted while I was slaving away. You fix that and that’s worth a thousand cosmetic fixes like light green over dark.

I really dislike the new homepage. The colours are too bright and in-your-face. I feel almost stressed looking at it! The old homepage was perfect the way it was – nice, light, easygoing colours that make Yahoo!Answers a welcoming atmosphere. This feels way too bold and unnecessary. If this is the new permanent homepage, then PLEASE at least make an option for users who would like to stick with the familiar, and superior, Yahoo!Answers homepage.
I like it just the way it was! I liked it two changes ago, and I’m just getting used to the old one. And you have to go and change it again? You’re lucky you don’t loose me for a participant on here with all those changes you’re making.

I don’t like it. You changed something that didn’t need to be changed. I would rather have you all working on fixing the troll problem. Fix that first. I hate it and I am going to do a petition to change it back!
It would be nice if your “upgrades” didn’t mess up everything else. Now the answers I delete aren’t falling off my list. I really wish you would fix the search feature. I don’t know why you have it hobbled so badly.

Such bright colors, especially ones that don’t match, are going to give me a headache and cause me to sign off. Poor color choices, speaking from a designer’s POV the designers at YA should have studied the aspects of color a little more.
My first reaction is that it is way too bright! People thought the old YA was too green? But it seems like you fixed some things and made it easier to navigate, so I guess I’ll get used to it.

Either change it back or get rid of the blue background. Make it a lighter more dull colour like a light green, white or light beige.
Looks good, but the blue background doesn’t really go with the green? Also you should make a Yahoo! Answers Mobile. I am always on my iPod using Answers, but is kind of hard to use. A mobile version would be great!

However, you should do something about the abuse system.
Many commenters and questions use the derogatory term ‘tea bagger’ to insult other Y!A members.
This is a deliberate slur, and very inflammatory.
‘Tea Bagger’ refers to a homosexual male in a depraved sex act.
Use of that term to insult is EXACTLY like calling someone a ‘fagg0t’ or ‘qu33r’
Y!A would not allow those words, and you should not allow ‘tea bagger’ and it’s derivatives either.
Strange color combination but I can deal with it. When will the idiotic ‘report’ button be removed? Bullies lord over every Y/A user and live in fear of being attacked and accounts suspended at all times — no way to run a business….
i think it looks SO much better.
i do agree with some other comments that the shade of blue doesn’t go as well as it could. it needs to be a darker blue like the dark green which i love. (think UWF’s Argonaut colors!)
the reason i dont use Yahoo sites in general is because they are so CLUTTERED. this is much more streamlined.
i am thrilled this change has been done and i hope its continued throughout the Yahoo world.
but there are a lot of more important fixes like LIVE TIME notifications that a question has been deleted while you are answering it so you dont keep on writing for no reason.
also, i have told my owns question that there is no best answer, and people still get points for a horrible answer. PLEASE GIVE THE ASKER MORE SAY SO QUESTIONS DONT GET SAVED WITH ONE WORD STUPID ANSWERS.
and i would like to DELETE a question anytime, even during voting, because again people give bad answers just to get points and i dont want that question listed on my page, much less out there on the web. i have been so frustrated searching for pre-answered questions and finding no REAL answer.

Why do this, anyway? Have you looked at every single complaint email that you’ve gotten and tried to fix those things that may have needed work?

Why don’t y’all tone down that green a little. A lighter green over a darker green is cool, but this green screams at ya. Just a suggestion ~ I don’t like that color.

Hey, just a follow up to my previous message. I’ve been getting the feel of it, and I have to agree with those who say the green bar is TOO dark. It would be better if the green and maybe even the blue was much lighter. It’s better than total white and very very light green, but it doesn’t need to be too dark. Well, just my opinion.

As green is somewhat pleasant to the eyes, this Green is a bit too Green, any Greener than that, and we’ll have all 40 Shades of it, and we’re not even in Eire. All in all, its the Question & The Answers, that really counts in my opinion, Keep up the Good Work Q & A.
Just when I get comfortable with one change you guys make another one. There was nothing wrong with the site 4 years ago, there was nothing wrong with it last month and you’re probably going to change this change before the summer is over.
Use your time to fix things that are broken – like having to go to a question 4 or 5 times to get the question instead of the “this question has been deleted” page, when it hasn’t been. Or previewing the answer but ending up at the question again. Fix what’s broke, not what’s not broke.
(I say this as a web developer who writes plenty of bugs, but I fix my bugs before I make enhancements and changes.)

I’m not really one who adjusts to change very well but I’ll try.
Other than that slight problem the only thing I feel the need to complain about is that soap blue background. It just doesn’t fit in very well. I think it’d be nicer if you replaced that with either turquoise, a lighter green to provide contrast or just a nice soft yellow colour. . . . .

I don’t really like it. The website used to look simple and welcoming. Now it looks like AOL! Crowded, messy, and confusing. The color change is nice but it isn’t really matching haha. Blue & Green. Sorry but I don’t think you guys did too good. Try keeping it more simple but changing it to nicer colors that won’t hurt our eyes.

Although I love the effort put onto the new page, I’d rather stick with the old one. The colors were better, and it was also more user-friendly. Instead, make it possible to make our own color schemes, and make our own themes.

I think they should add a lot more categories. Under chemistry there are a ton of questions. Some are very basic and some are very advanced. Maybe separate it into basic and advanced or something.

Don’t like the colors. People don’t want stuff messed with. We like what we are used to. The new green is hideous.
Have a new option that reported questions disappear immediately. People report questions that are unacceptable and then still have to keep looking at it until it finally gets removed. At least let users who have proven trustworthy have this option. Yahoo is too slow on removing offensive material.
Also, remove the point system. It only encourages gaming. This is about helping people and sharing viewpoints, not earning points. The gamers will leave and that is better for everyone.

There seems to be a PROBLEM when viewing your profile.
If you are viewing your (or anyone else’s) Q’s&A’s, you CANNOT return to the PROFILE “header” screen. You have to go to HOME and re-click on the avatar to get back to the PROFILE page… now known as “Activity” page.
This same limitation/problem occurs if you are viewing the “NETWORK” page AND “My Network’s Q’s&A’s.”
This is very unweildy when you are reviewing activity of oneself AND one’s contacts.
PLEASE REINSTATE the PROFILE “home” option, so one can RETURN to the “Activity” page without the run-around that has to be done now.

I adore the new page. People should quit whining and adjust, everything needs a bit of change once in a while. The green and blue has a great cozy feeling to it, sort of like an inviting splash of color. Every time, and I mean EVERY time a website changes, people will get stirred up about how they dislike it, but after a while, they get used to it. Really, most of the people that are giving feedback are the ones who think negatively, or else it seems like a waste of time to just say they just plainly like it. I LOVE the new layout! Good job, Yahoo!!
While you’re making all these changes, why don’t you address the serious problem who have with Online Racism?
haven’t seen it yet, but you still aren’t making changes that matter. this is more of an anesthetic thing and i really don’t care one way or another for that

I run forums myself and I also have two of my own websites ( car related and business ) and I know how hard it is to make changes people will be happy with.

Just wished that this site believed in freedom. Your team tends to delete questions that hardly could be considered offensive. The only time I see questions deleted from your team is when you ask a democrat a tough question and they get a mental weggie. What I do not like is that libs try to silence opposing questions and thinking. Let us be free.

I await the day when there will be an option (unless I’ve already missed something) to turn the spellchecking facility OFF as well as those annoying pop-up bubbles that tell me that it looks like I’ve left caps on, or used too much punctuation. I KNOW what I’m doing, and those things are worse than pop-up adverts!
As for the blue and green? Yuck. As an artist I would never even contemplate putting green with blue in that way. Also, how about letting people artistically inclined create some new wallpapers on your free swag thing, because to be honest – I wouldn’t even bother downloading them! Instead of just changing the look of the site, how about some funky new logos as well?

The colors are fine, when everyone gets used to using it they will forget about the colors. Someone will always complain about something, and I will complain about a question that has been deleted, should be deleted so no one can see it instead of clicking and finding it deleted. If I don’t like the changes, and they bother me that much I just won’t use the site any more. That simple.
The biggest problem about Y!A website design is that it’s full of Java Script programs, and it makes the pages too heavy to be loaded by the interenet speed in developing countries. Please do something about that.

As far as how I like it…It’s garish, gaudy and childish. The bright baby blue and kelly green just screams “Kids Welcome!” Get rid of it.
But of course, you won’t take any of our suggestions, because well, you’re Yahoo and that’s how you operate.
The old one is nice, but this is also nice. I don’t know what to pick/choose. But, I prefer to change it like what Chelsea says.
Sorry, why focus on GUI and access changes when we have been asking for so much more to help with community moderation, etc.
This is just a cosmetic change and really doesn’t help us that use it day to day.

I agree with the others. The green is far to jarring and draws your attention away from the rest of the page. Banners are not why we are here. It is the page content (questions, answers, etc.)
The top banner should be subtle and a tool available for use. Not the dominant feature.
Rather than a home page I would prefer a My View page. Let me setup what I look at all the time.

Last comment, I promise. Right now the interface is only partially implemented. In looking at a question you will see in on the answer, may see it on the preview, not see it when you submit.
Looking at it in that fashion shows how jarring the new color scheme is. The old one, being more muted, was easier on the eyes and allowed you to focus where you wanted to.
The new interface immediately draws you attention to the banner. It glows in your peripheral vision when you are looking at the rest of the page.

It looks as if you had a child pick the color scheme of the new website. I came to ask and answer questions, not visit Playhouse Disney.
The action bar is okay… maybe I’m just not used to it yet. Maybe I’m just too busy quelling my visual nausea. I really liked the menu on the side of the page. It used to be perfect. Who says it was “too green”? Maybe someone who loved “purple”?

Hmmm! I’m always up for new changes but could you all at Yahoo Answers make it so that the “My profile” option is easily accessible like the old format. And while we’re on it, I appreciate the speedy and efficient removal of anti-black racist questions and answers in the Society & Culture Groups section. Good work. Somehow you all have to figure out away to keep the same racist from remaking new profiles again though and permanently ban them from off the site. I say do something like Wikipedia in which you track their IP addresses to keep them banned from off the site.

Allow me to congradulate you on the New Category tab. It is far easier to use than the previous layout.
That being said allow me to speak of the Color Scheme.
As you can see the general opinion is that the new Color Scheme is off!!!
I Understand that you desire to keep an new and fresh feel to YA however the new color scheme does the exact opposite!! It Seems OUT DATED!
The Green is far too deep and not the right color, the LAST color scheme was Absolutely wonderful and Needed no changes at ALL!!!
I am a Graphic Designer and was perfectly happy with your previous colors. As others have mentioned the specific shades you have chosen DO NOT WORK.

Like the blue, but there’s too much on either side of the page. Widen the contents, so you don’t see a wide line of blue & then wasted space along the sides of the pages.
You want to have the information fill up as much of the screen as possible. The part with the actual info should be wider, with maybe a narrower band of blue. The wide blue margins, plus the space you lose on the screen is just lost space otherwise.
Also, that Green Bar across the top is out of Proportion to the rest of the page. It doesn’t look right. If you could just shorten it up a bit, I think it would be far less distracting to the eye.
I’m not impressed that we seem to lose points when a question we answered is deleted!!
Other than that, I guess the new updates will become bearable over time, but Yahoo! keep trying to fix something that isn’t broken.
Is this more green because it is energy efficient? My computer seems cooler and is emitting less heat. Way to save the earth!
I wish you would stop breaking things when you “upgrade.” Now the questions where I chose to delete my answer won’t come off my answer list. I delete what turn out to be repetitive answers to trim my list, and it’s not trimming. I really wish you people would Beta test more. Heck, I wish you people would make meaningful changes instead of just reshuffling the look and playing with your eCrayons.
It looks great, but I wish you’d add one more subject to the question box. In order to answer the question correctly, we need to know which program they are using that pertains to it.
Maybe a box for them to enter this info?

I loathe it! The icons aren’t properly constrained circles, the colour combo is ghastly, the drop shadow behind the page is lame, the new graphics are of the absolute lowest quality, AND IS THAT TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT?!?

At first i was like WHOA its changed and felt weird.
But now i have warmed to it and it is great. I love the green banner at the top, its my favourite colour ^^ also its good you put away the catergories so it gives more space =)
but please can we have the comment box on top, it will be easier then.

What a WASTE of programmer-time!
The failures include:
• No attempt to include ENGLISH in the spell-checker’s lexicon.
• No attempt to get rid of the childish censorship that won’t allow me to use the 5-letter word for a female pooch, despite that between a third and a half of the questions I respond to REQUIRE me to refer to that animal. Nor will it allow me to use the 3-letter word for a donkey, and various other words that have real meanings.I object STRONGLY to Yahoo censoring MY messages on (presumably) the basis that ITS staff have coarse minds and therefore EVERYONE who wants to use the words ITS staff misuse must also have coarse minds.
• No attempt to get rid of that annoying space-swallower script and switch to a fixed-spacing font so that we can display columns.
• Nor was there any attempt to either get rid of the irritating so-called “Preview” page or make it a GENUINE preview that shows users exactly where line-wraps will occur and will change colour (or in some other way) reveal that the text has exceeded YA’s arbitrary limit.
• No attempt to allow answerers to use [Ctrl][V] to paste graphics into their answers, to show exactly what they’re trying to explain/describe.
• No attempt to get rid of the annoying intercept-script that automatically moves you from the Input page to the so-called Preview page whenever you attempt to use the [Alt]-key to create an extended-ASCII character from the keyboard.
• No attempt to allow an answer to have as much page length as is needed to give a proper explanation.
• No attempt to allow a Comment to have as much page length as is needed.
• No attempt to remove the script or scripts that keep going into an infinite loop, prompting FireFox to ask whether I want the script stopped (of COURSE I do! But YAHOO should stop it!).
• No mention of fixing the faulty storage loop in the Advanced Search settings that sees my:
(1) “Category” settings vanish at least twice a month;
(2) “Date Submitted” setting vanish as soon as I leave that page;
(3) √ tick for “Make this my default search”vanish ever since you made your latest changes.
Pointless, pointless, pointless. All you’ve supplied were just gimmick changes – at least one of them merely clumsily replicating a mechanism that was already conveniently available.
Of FAR more importance to regular answerers (without whom YA would be a total waste of time) are:
• YA allows COMPUTERS to remove Questions and to remove Answers, doing so purely on the say-so of spiteful trolls. But NO complaint should be passed to automatics – if a threshold is reached, an intelligent human (of which I have so far found only 2 in the “Abuse & Appeals” section of YA).
• YA disguises COMPUTERS as unintelligent humans and lets the random-number-generator “decide” whether an appeal or a complaint is to be upheld.
• Yahoo strips all HTML formatting from appeals & queries, making reading the appeals so boring that few of the staff bother. And so trolls triumph… Example: On 23.2 I queried as to why a question, one which I had just been notified that mine had been made the Best Answer for, had been “Removed for breaking the TOC” – that was what was displayed each time I tried to access that Question’s page. On 24.2 Bjorn asked me what identity I had used for that answer. So I pointed out that I had INCLUDED THAT in my query. On 25.2 Born asked me what question it was, and to quote the message. So I pointed out that I had also included the web-address of the question in my original query but could not quote the Question or the message because THEY HAD BEEN REMOVED by Yahoo – and I wanted to know WHY!!!!!!!.
We should NOT have to put up with such incompetent procedures and incompetent people (assuming that Bjorn and others ARE “people” and not the inadequate computers they act like). I don’t want Yahoo employing any ONE or any THING that fails the Turing Test. I want my queries and appeals dealt with by people who take the time to READ what I’ve written, and who have the intelligence to COMPREHEND what I’ve written. Those everyday normal expectations cannot be achieved until the following are adopted:
(a) A higher threshold before Abuse reports are investigated.
(b) Enough INTELLIGENT staff employed to then investigate the veracity of each such report BEFORE any action is taken.
(c) As soon as an Answer is removed, ALL activity on that Question is suspended – no further answers accepted, no further voting accepted – until a defined Appeals period has expired. A “flag” should appear on that question stating “No further activity is permitted in this Question until 12:00 GMT On the 23rd” (and *GMT*, not the local time of YOUR overpopulated little corner of the world. Yahoo boasts about being international – so ACT & THINK international – there are far more people who know how to work out their local time from GMT than there are who know how to work it out from PDST or PST).
My eyes also HATE the tiny little font you use on your blog pages – it’s even worse than the font used on the YA pages. Are you unaware that the average age of Internet users has leaped from the low 20s a few years ago to the high 30s today, and is still rising? Except for the lucky people, eyesight deteriorates as age rises – especially where diabetes is involved…. and high use of computers is a big contributor to the weight gain that has produced the “diabetes epidemic”; so more and more computer users are going to have worse & worse eyesight.
There is an old saying that applies: IF it ain’t broke, don’t “fix” it. I don’t feel this will go over well, could end up having less people using the site due to the change. Another saying to keep in mind is: Change is not always good. So be expecting some resistance or disatisfaction with this. I don’t find pale blue appealing to the background. Try a subtle color shade that is appealing to most, as in a neutral shade like a tone of brown or something that many people would enjoy. Why not take a POLL as to what color is most preferred and go with that? I don’t think that green with pale blue are that popular or favored for the site.
I also do NOT see the browser heading to be tucked away as something productive, that makes it more complex to use for many and won’t bother to do this then for much of the percent of people using this site.
I personally feel doing “updates” like this while we try to use the site and answer questions or post some is disruptive and not very useful to us to be honest,

I suggested brown as a tone as there are color blind people. There is a degree of color blindness in one aspect of that which makes this percent of those people see reds and greens as brown. I have a now ex bf that did that , he had to find a house I was at once. I forgot about that factor, told him the trim was red and he said he had trouble to find it as the house trim looked brown and didn’t see the address on it.
Maybe try brown with a gold tone that’s subdued where needed if you are going to make any changes?
What is wrong with using the purple and white as you show in the yahoo symbols like the headband I have on my avatar there? Could be the “yahoo colors” here.

I really wish you guys would stop tweaking this site. Everytime I start to get used to things and all nice and comfy, you change it again! I love Y!A, but all this tweaking and coffee break crap is enough to make me want to delete my account.

I agree with the person that mentioned not being able to reply to resolved answers. Sometimes, when a person resolves their posting, they’ll ask another question of the “best answer” person……but, there’s no way to answer it, especially if the poster doesn’t allow emails. If there was a “button” for a reply, I think it would be very helpful. I think the new colors & format are great!! Thanks for giving us a place to express our opinions……
I like it, but I think there should be some added categories. I always feel limited by the available options.
Or maybe if some of the existing categories just got more specific, e.g., under Religion & Spirituality, maybe a Christianity, Muslim, Jewish, etc. category, since that section always gets inundated with questions.
It would also be nice if we had the option to post a question in multiple categories, maybe up to 3?

I think the layout is fine, but I did like the old layout better. Still, it’s pretty nice.

Great job on the new skin, it looks more appealing, and gives a new spirit to the site.
Looking forward for more improvements on the report verifying mechanism, it gets tiresome to appeal and wait for re-insntation every couple ours, especially on active forums like R&S (Religion & Spirituality).. but overall brilliant work.

Ok, a feature I don’t like. I used to be able to go directly to the Computer section from the first page, now I have to go to browse categories first.
I love the new design and the colors, but I LOATHE the mouse-over feature on the tabs! I would much rather click the tab to open it instead of have my mouse automatically drop the menu down whenever I hover over a tab.
We want a Catalan version of Yahoo Anwsers.

It seems Yahoo has hired someone from its competitors as its designer. Although the previous answer look was not great in itself, it served its purpose well as it was non-obtrusive. Who said that the previous green was Goddy. The current one is definitely gross…and the color blue with green..Michaelangelos of the world would like to get buried now beside him if a company like yahoo comes up with such combinations.

I often have to stick my questions into whatever i can find thats closest and therefore get poor quality answers.
I wish that you could customize the colors of Yahoo! Answers to how a specific person likes it, that way you could make everyone happy… I liked the old colors but you should make it so each user can pick a color theme they like.

The new UI is not really better than before. I’m just going to comment about the color first. Ok, the green color is not as greenish than before, but now the entire block and dropdown menu are all green, so it ends up hurting the eyes even more. I know this is supposed to catch people’ attention, but this is really over-killed. The blue buttons don’t seem to work with this bold green color, probably light yellow is better.

While I think change is welcome, the bright colors you have chosen are very hard on the vision and make viewing quite unpleasant.

I love green, it’s my favorite color so i really couldn’t give a fig how “bright” some people think it is. I would call it vivid, or true green, not bright. as long as it’s not neon i’m good.
however, the blue background seems unfinished to me. like you are planning to put something there….but haven’t made it to that stage yet.
My suggestion would be a plain white background before but with the purple Y! logo tiled.
Also, i thought deep purple was suppose to be Y!’s signature color…so why is it not featured more?

Hi, Im sure you’ve heard all the nice stuff about the improvements so I’ll just say what I don’t like about it. I really don’t like the blue background on the sides – it is just way too busy and makes my eyes tired, I can’t be on the site as long. Maybe a soft yellow would not only look better but make it physically easier on the eyes. Two bold colors – dark green plus dark blue is overkill…just my opinion! But I love the green!! Good job on the green. And if it was up to me I wouldn’t have changed anything, not sure why you guys keep changing….it’s turning into other sites and losing its essence.

That’s wonderful that you’re doing some updating! It’s been really annoying me how everything other popular website is updated yet Yahoo! has also been behind and hasn’t done much updating. Concerning Yahoo! Answers, I really think that there should be many more categories. For example, as a subcategory of Religion & Spirituality (something I ask many questions under) I think that there should be Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, etc.

I refuse to start a new account because I spent at least an hour a day 5 days a week actually answering questions and reporting spam. *sigh*

The Layout seems to work well, but the colour combination with its resulting contrast is really very tiring. It is far too bright and makes me blink all the time.
The good thing is that it will definitely limit the length of time I spend on Y/A as I fear it may give me a headache. Perhaps sunglasses are in order.

Tweaking is good, even for aesthetics and, like a department store, for vaiety. It seems you’ve identified some inefficiencies and made them better.
please change it back! Too confusing, the old one was much nicer, no offense. I feel bad saying this but that blue is so depressing, it doesn’t look well againest the green, which is way to in your face, if you havent noticed, and can you let me go back to the original? Well, if you actuall DO update statistics daily that will be great…updating statistics has always been a big challenge for yahoo…I remember one time when they didn’t update top contributors for 6 months! However playing around with changing appearances of the page is worthless…just leave it alone! It was fine just as it was. Spend time weeding out stupid and inappropriate questions instead. Like in the Travel section…it is always full of questions that have nothing at all to do with travel. And the new shade of green you are using…GROSS! You seem to major on minor issues and ignore more important ones.
I think it looks nice. yes it’s different, but i’m sure we all can adjust to it.

i actually kinda liked the old green better. and i agree, i think it would be cool if we got to pick our own colors in the future and be allowed to delete our questions after it has been resolved. but other than that, looks terrific!
These people are a bunch of whiners and are people really that slow or are they to navigate the site or are they just lazy? Really the site is good although if it was me changing it, I would’ve done it differently it, none the less I have no complaints. If people don’t like it they can easily roll out.

Sorry but this color scheme really hurts my eyes. The green is way too deep, overall it’s starting to look like Wikianswers but with a blue background. As a designer myself I can’t say I condone this.

I used yahoo answers since 2006, I love the old one so much better. Its so much simple looking, and the new one looks so not good looking and crowded. The old one was just so perfect the way it was layed out and easier. Can you at least make a way for the users that don’t like the new version to change it to the olf version PLEASE we will be more happier

Hate it. not that i dont like changes. its that this one gives me an Agorophobic(think thats how its spelled) feeling, for those of you who dont know, it is the opposite of claustrophobia. I’m not afraid, i’m just less comfortable.
i prefer darker colors that look less cheesy(no fancy pattern or shiny look).
and the new one reminds me of an ugly early 00′s cheap plastic toy or electronic device, you know with that ugly silvery plastic with the ugly fancy wavy and bubly shapes. then they started to look better later on.
i feel less comfortable when using Y!A now. Please give an option! in fact i loved the old one. but a new but cozy one would work also.
I don’t really care what the layout looks like. Just give me rich text formatting, please, and perhaps an equation editor.
I think it’s a little bit inconvenient right now. The template changes all the time; sometimes it turns to the old version, sometimes to the new. And another problem is that when I open my profile link the page opens but in the status bar it writes “Error on page”, and the tool bar on the top of the page doesn’t work any more. I don’t know if it’s just my problem, or there’s really an error in programing of Y!A once again.
And about the color, I think the green color is fine but the blue background color doesn’t fit it.
Why is menu in all caps? I don’t like it.

The new Y!A page is quite better than the previous in terms of the structural and functional changes, but the new colour scheme is worse off. I can’t believe that some people thought that the old header was “too green”. Then what can the present “green” header be called? It’s kind of harsh on the eyes, I wish it is changed to a more pleasant colour.
I like all the new changes, but, one thing that should also be changed is the question deleted after I typed an answer. Something should alert you while you’re typing so you don’t waste any more time on it. It’s so frustrating to hit submit only to see, “Question deleted.”
Let you bring any changes but what I need is freedom. Yes, I want to feel free to answer the questions, whatever the questions are? Don’t bring the community guidelines to interfere or block the answers. It doesn’t mean I will reply beyond the my limit and the rules. I need to answer according the questions asked. If the questions reflected any abuse I want to reply the same way it asked. Thats all.
Note : Now a days I stopped answer becoz of your unwanted interfere and blocking answers. I only answered the questions when it forwarded to my mail.
Bcoz I want to honour the people who are expecting some thing from me. Abuse in the sense it should be reported the concern person who asked the question should report my answer is abuse.

I think the new changes will be nice. One concern I do have that I hope was addressed is that of spammers. Security needs to be tightened just enough to block spammers without ruining the experience for others.
I do not like this new layout at all. The removal of the ‘My Profile’ button makes it difficult to access things with efficiency. The ‘My activity’ icon is confusing.
The green colour is not warming it is rather depressing. I love to see the fresh lime green everyday, and today i was shocked by the boring, dull green. Far before being a Yahoo Answers I was intrigued by the lime green, and the ask,answer, discover stood out. Now it is as plain and dull as any other ordinary site… very univiting, uninteresting, it makes me want to leave YA.
However, the invite friends feature is good. I wish there was also a way to sort out answers from certain people in your network, or even catergorise your answers for easy reference. It would be could to have a personal -answers search function.
I have posted a few q’s on this issue and 99% of the response was negative mainly with the colour. I hope Yahoo decides to keep the my profile button and the lime-green colour if they are to make any changes.

Like when I try to submit an answer, it redirects me to an error page saying that Yahoo Answers are down,
I hate when that happens. Lucky am using Fire Fox 3.6, so my text are saved. But, if I was using IE, then all of my content of that certain answer would have been lost forever. ( And, I wouldn’t have wasted anytime typing it back again )
So, I hope those kind of errors/bugs are fixed.
Also, I can’t wait to check out the new ‘browsing categories’ design. Although I like the old one as well. But, I’ll judge and see if it’s better than the old one,
And, I have one more suggestion that I know you guys might refuse. Allow our links to be “do follow” instead of “no follow” so our websites can gain instead of getting traffic from normal clickers. But, I guess it isn’t really needed, because most webmasters gets a lot of traffic from giving great answers and Yahoo Answers benefits from getting webmasters to answer others questions.

I agree with some of the other comments on the green being way too in your face. I’m not sure about the new page. I think the biggest thing I don’t like about it are the colors. I enjoyed the last color scheme better.

I think the idea is good, but the hue of the background colors will be the most useful on the eyes. I use 2 tone blue color codes in my pages alot, they are easy on the eyes. I also seem to always have freezeup on the pages when I submit answer , but ONLY on Yahoo pages, no where else

I like the old layout better, I can see everything at a glance, what my network’s Q&A are, questions recommended to me, all the categories, my points, everything…..I hate having to navigate to areas that were just open to me before.

I have to agree with many of the other comments here, I think this new green is a bit harsh on the eyes. Someone else had a pretty good idea, you should make it so that each user can change the color to satisfy their own tastes. The green/blue does kinda clash, but I like the other changes.

Personally, I dislike the new look. It’s very heavy on the eyes and the color scheme is strange. Those two particular shades of blue and green don’t work. Please visit colourlovers.com, or better yet, don’t change the look of Y!A in the first place.

The lame advanced search doesn’t even save the search options you specify when you check “make this your default search”, and they’re doing fluff like making navigational and color scheme changes. Pleeeeease!

Many questions are posted in categories that they don’t belong. Some questions are not appropriate for the category they are posted in. Many answers seem to be posted simply to collect two points. Perhaps the Answer Staff could sample a few questions and answers and tell me if I am mistaken.

Terrible. YOu are so wrapped up in your cosmetics that you’ve screwed up the navigation. We cannot decided to abort an answer and use a button or hot link on the answer input page to go back to My Profile or the Category to pick out a new question to answer. “Home” is the only hot link back to anywhere from the answer input page.
And I suspect you’ve still done nothing about Askers deleting questions while people are still answering them. Fix the logic first; then worry about the cosmetics.
Now if you could only police the Israel section and remove the anti-Israel racist questions and answers, that would make Yahoo Answers once again a credible place.

I like it except for the green. I honestly HATE the green. It’s like too… green? I don’t know but it just looks really weird; the last green was soooo much better. I don’t see the blue in the background though on my computer, but based on the pic at the top of the page, it’s kind of… odd. To me, at least, it looks really cheap >.< I liked the old font better too. The new just looks too buisness-y. I know that makes no sense but whatever.

During the Preview your answer page, the post button to actually answer the question does not seem to render under Firefox on linux/Knoppix, making it impossible to answer any questions.

I wish you would do something about the thumbs in the Paranormal Section. The skeptics are misusing them… giving lots of thumbs downs to people..especially certain people (not me) who they don’t like….just for answering a question. It is about time. I have been on Y.A. for nearly two years and it seems that up until now the change to the basic layout was minimal. This new design is far more aestetically pleasing. First time in a while that I could sincerely say, good job. =)
Okay, well, I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this one and reported THIS one, too… but here goes….
In your PROFILE, when you view your ACTIVITY DETAILS, if an answer was deleted because the QUESTION was deleted… it shows this message:
Answer deleted by Question deletion 2 points (13 minutes ago) View Question…
Well… that’s all well and good, but when you click on the “VIEW QUESTION” you CAN’T because… THE QUESTION WAS DELETED!!!! So there is NO WAY to know WHICH question you had answered where your answer was deleted. And, since the answer was not reported or found to be a VIOLATION, there is no “VIOLATION NOTIFICATION EMAIL” to even let you know which question had been deleted.
Don’t you folks think this is just a bit strange and unweildy? If our answer was deleted, and YOU “offer” the chance to view the question, shouldn’t we be able to see it? This can be important information to us to inform us that it was not a “good” question and in violation, or if the “asker” deleted it, we might choose to answer the person directly via email (if they allow it of course).
So, there you have another “quirk” that NEEDS to be CORRECTED.

I like the contrast the two colors have it makes it easier to see the distinctions , while it may be a little to much contrast , its better than struggling to distinquish between things on the page by making things eaiser to find.

It’s horrible! Change it back!!!!! Please!!!!!! The old one was so much better…and if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
The blue is tolerable (not my first choice, but I won’t complain). However, the new banner is WAY TOO GREEN. It’s MUCH greener than the old design and it’s really hard on the eyes. Please make it a softer tone!!
Well like others have said you guys made the green bar too green.it looks better light green.And the new Search bar is smaller thats gona be harder for people to see unlike the other search bar whick was the right size.
You guys should have a link that says switch back and it would link back to the old yahoo answers theme.
I think:
* The answer, seek and discover buttons should be smaller on the homepage.
* The blue background should be changed to white.
* And the search bar should go back to the exact way it was before the re-design. The search bar was absolutely perect and now I find it very hard to find things…
I can get used to the aesthetics (though a little over-bearing for me), but I am an avid searcher and I really think the search bar should go back to the wonderul way it was…

In the last few years Yahoo have not done anything what was a change for the better.
This is like a nightmare.
Chat rooms are an unbelievable disgrace! Yahoo Mail is not user friendly anymore, and now before you can check on the status of your own questions or network here on Y/A you have to navigate through the categories first.
Can’t Yahoo hire professionals for a change?..
i love the navigation at the top instead of the side and just mouse over it for options. green is too dark and huge. and the search for questions is terrible, the old way was better, this new takes too long to search and refine by date etc.
i agree with bernadine, the thumbs down symbol should be deleted. it is abused by jealous or cranky people.
