What does it take to be a champion?

There aren’t many people in the world who can say they’re: an Olympic athlete, 6-time NBA champion, has their own line of shoes, oh, and is labeled one of the best basketball players (and some argue one of the best athletes) of all time. Some even say he revolutionized the game of basketball.

That’s because there’s only one Michael Jordan—who happens to be celebrating his 47th birthday today, and is rumored to buy the Charlotte Bobcats.

With so few athletes reaching this level of excellence in their career, it begs the question of, what does it take to become a champion? And, who is a champion in your book? Is it an Olympic athlete? Do you consider your parents champions? What about your teacher? Tell us by leaving a comment below!

  2. You must have been born a child of my father. No religious pun intended. His last name is “Champion”.

  3. A champion isn’t an athlete, a celebrity, a parent, or a humanitarian (even though all those kinds of people are wonderful). It’s somebody who sets goals for themselves and takes the measures necessary to achieve them. A champion is somebody who takes destiny into their own hands and achieves their dreams- people who don’t settle, but strive.

  4. Michael Jordan is a Bitter Betty and all one has to do is watch his Hall of Fame (Shame) Speech to see that.

  5. I am the champion. God blessed me with perfections, along with many flaws. I’m young. I believe I’m God’s angel. He favors me with many blessings. I will shine.

  7. It takes a lot of determination and hard work, with a little push of luck. Also, to excel means finding your area where you have “the knack” and sticking to it.

“True” champions are very rare, the only person I can think of now is Ataturk. Research if you don’t know who he is.

  10. The answer only lies within the hearts of those who strived hard & accomplished within themselves. It’s not about stats, celebrity attention, or trophies…it’s about what lies in the person that makes them a champion…of your own desires & accomplishments!

  11. Hardwork, dedication, charisma is needed.

Muhammad Ali was a great champion in my books.

  12. The secret is two fold; good genes and motivation. Johnny Wiesmuller has always been a Champion in my book.He overcame a crippling disease to become a what was then the fastest man in the water.

  13. Okay, he’s accomplished a lot but there’s only one true champion in my opinion and that’s Roger Federer. He completely changed the game of tennis and has been at the top for so long. He’s adapted and changed to keep up with the huge amount of competition he faces and has won so many awards from fans and fellow players. I won’t bother listing his achievements, there’s too many but he stands alone in my opinion. Not only does he have several extremely talented youngsters chasing him (Murray, Nadal, Roddick, Del Potro, Djokovic) but he doesn’t rely on a team as is true for basketball. He’s dominated for so long and has millions of fans. He’s such a lovely person too, widely respected and humble. Tennis is such an amazing sport, it really needs the publicity he brings it. Love or hate that he wins everything, you have to respect the talent, drive and strength it takes to do that.

  14. I think, well first i have to agree Michael Jorden is a champion, and second, I guess i admire Sy Young. When you log into MLB.com, Sy Young, and look under the Sy Young award, I have to agree that the male Sy/Cy Young looks just like an angel…i think he is that proud of himself for trying his best and doing super good. Truly, Susan D. S.

  15. yeah that just scratches the surface of Jordans accomplishments. Those are some of the big ones though. He is probably the greatest champion, athlete, or whatever of all time. His only rival would be like Ali or something. To be a champion like these two takes a whole different type of person.

  16. To be a true champion, you have to be gracious whether you win or lose. Muhammad Ali was always gracious, even when he lost a fight. You don’t make excuses, you don’t blame others when things don’t go your way, you just continue to try to make yourself the best you can be.

  19. There are factors that we don’t even think about. The book “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell does a good job of answering the question of what makes champions.

  20. A champion is someone who will push their bodies and minds everyday to get where and what they want to accomplish. If you don’t push yourself then you are not a champion at all. Someone could be the worst athlete but push themselves to their limit and beyond but that person would be the champ because of his heart.

  21. If you want to emerge a champion from a competition, you must ask yourself: how much are you willing to struggle to win?

  24. Too broad of a question. It depends what you’re talking about. Tiger Wood’s is a champion golfer, but not so much of a champ when it comes to the wife. Jordan was a champion in the NBA, but not so much when it comes to his gambling addiction.

there rewards may not as be a great,
and they go unnoticed but if were not there

  26. to anyone that wants to say mj is not a champion, i say this to you. no one you know, or any child you may have, will ever accomplish the things this man has. he is the best athlete this world has seen. he may be overshadowed one day, but i seriously doubt it. he was my childhood idol not because of his basketball skills only, but because of his unrelentless pursuit of winning. it makes me laugh so hard to see people say that there were others on his team or that sports figures arent champions…you are morons…. im sorry that you are insignificant and havent accomplished anything resembling what he has done for this planet.

  30. Opportunity and the drive. Lets face it, you can be in the NBA but you are not, you can be in the NFL but you are not, you can be the president of the United States but you are not or you can be in the UFC but you are not.

A true champion is someone who has been given the opportunity to grow up in an environment where he can succeed at his respected sport. If you decide to pick up basketball at the age of 20 then chances are, you are not making it to the NBA because it is too late. A true champion finds a passion for a sport at a young age, competes with others like him, maintains discipline, picks up skills and applies them, then he or she gets recruited and recognized. When they get recognized they get an opportunity.

Playing a professional sport is not a right, it is a privilege. A privilege few have and very few get the opportunity to obtain. If Michael Jordan would have grown up in a family where basketball was not respected then he would not have been in the NBA. If Peyton Manning did not have a Quarterback dad or if he grew up in a non football family then chances are he would not have been in the NFL.

Those are the few who get the opportunity, something a very few percentage of us will get. Example, there are high schools that don’t have football programs or basketball programs, those kids have the skills but they won’t get their shot.

Opportunity makes a “would have been” in to an “is”, sadly even in a country like the US not everyone gets an opportunity.

  34. I believe being a champion is overcoming your obstacles to win your dreams.
People who are champions to me are:
My sister and me(we are both deaf kids that are excelling in school and speaking well)
My parents (they’ve done a lot for me)
my best friends, because they’ve going through crap you wouldn’t believe and survived

  36. Michael is a champion because he worked as hard as anybody…….. and he might have had a tiny bit of Irish luck. Whatever the reason, Michael is a Champion…! I only pray that such a man is as great on the inside, as he appears on the outside…………….. For we need truely great champions, to follow, in these days.
May God Bless and keep you close.
