I always tell my clients your muscle fibers are like rubber bands, stretching before a workout lessens that snap response to them that is so beneficial in using weights.

I recommend using light weight for 1-2 sets on any isolation type movement that gives you a greater stretch anyways such as dumb bell flyes.

My wife has taught dance for years and if you have ever seen them stretch you will see them push down on each other to add eccentric resistance which is the same as you would be doing on dumb bell flyes or other lifts.

So I say go ahead and stretch but you might as well add weight to get a better stretch.

You are definitely supposed to stretch before working out, but also after working out. There are specific types of stretches that you are supposed to do. For track, before workouts we do static stretching, such as fire hydrants, donkey kicks, and leg swings. After a workout we do active stretching, and this is when we target specific muscles like calves, quads, and such.

Don't ever listen to somebody that calls people an idiot four times in one statement. Those are the kind of people to stay away from because if they act like that it is hard to believe they are mature enough to know anything worthwhile.

I like all of these really supportive comments, not! You stretch before AND after working out! Anybody that works out without stretching is going to end up hurting themselves.
