Ask Mike: How many blue eyes?

Hey Guys,

The eyes may be the window to the soul, but not everybody’s window is the same color. While the vast majority of people have brown eyes, significant portions of the population are born with blue, green, grey, or hazel peepers. Just how many of us have baby blues? I focused in on the Web for answers.

According to a 2006 article from the New York Times, the percentage of people with blue eyes is on the decline. The reasons have to do with immigration patterns, intermarriage, and good ol’ fashioned genetics. Back in the early 20th century, roughly half of the American population had blue eyes. By around 1950, the ratio had dipped to about 1:3. Nowadays, “only about one of every six Americans has blue eyes.”

A big part of the reason for the new percentage is changing marriage patterns. Again, according to the New York Times, last century, 80% of people married somebody within their own ethnic group. That’s far less true now. So, the odds of blue eyes (a recessive trait) being passed on to children declines.

Still, even though blue eyes are becoming increasingly rare, they aren’t in immediate danger of completely going away. Redheads are another story. Some in the scientific community predict the redhead will be “extinct” by 2100. Why? “The gene is recessive and therefore diluted when carriers produce children with people who have the dominant brown-hair gene.”

Not everybody agrees with the extinction theory. Some experts argue that redheads will be around for quite some time. All you Carrot Top fans can rest easy.

Do you guys have a favorite eye color? Would you ever consider getting colored contact lenses to change up your look? Please leave a colorful comment below.

Thanks for reading,

Mike

  3. I have dark brown eyes and I like a girl that has the most beautiful blue eyes in the world. Blue eyes are very attractive to me.
No I would not like colored contact lenses because they do not represent who I am. One’s eyes says something about who you are and if you change it, you change the person. And I would really be uncomfortable meeting a girl with blue eyes only to realize that they are fake. That would be a let down.
Red eyes are just scary though.

  4. Blue eyes are amazing. But I’ve come to learn that all colors are great and they suit their people perfectly. For me my favourite eye color is Gold and Yes I did see a guy with this eye color, and they weren’t contacts.

  5. I dont have a preference per se. It all depends on who goes with what. Some people might look funny with blue or green eyes. Although something about dark eyes attracts me.

  8. I have dark brown (I’ve been told they look black, too) eyes. And dark brown (ditto black) hair. I’m not the hugest fan of blue eyes. I really like the blue-y violet colour, but that’s extremely rare.
But my favourite hair/eye colour combination is bright green eyes/dark brown hair. Yeah, I’m thinking of getting green colour contacts. Just to see how it would look. I welcome change :)

  9. “The once-held view that blue eye color is a simple recessive trait has been shown to be wrong. The genetics of eye color are so complex that almost any parent-child combination of eye colors can occur.”[4][5]

  10. Interesting. Not really something I thought of much. By the way you should check this out if you want to find some rare eye color info. My eyes and my Fathers eyes change colors. Mine seem to change based on my mood. They are normally hazel but can be green, blue, red, and sometimes even sparkle, I mean like there are sparks in the color. My Dads just keep changing. I know eye colors changing is normal for new borns but they ussually settle on one color after awhile.

So does this make me rare? Check it out.

  12. i have blue eyes, im so proud to be the third generation girl with blue eyes! they turn ice blue when there is no clouds in the sky. and they turn turqouise when i wear the color brown and they turn indigo and some times violet depending on what color purple i wear. BROWN EYED PEOPLE DON’T WEAR CONTACTS. THEY LOOK FAKE AND UGLY. IT ANNOYS EVERYONE.

  13. Well, it seems like society values “colored” eyes a lot more than brown eyes, which are ordinary. Even famous ‘ethnic’ models have light-colored eyes (e.g. Adriana Lima, Aishwarya Rai, etc.). Like blonde hair, blue or green eyes are eye-catching and very attractive to most people…the fact that blue eyes are a recessive trait and are becoming more rare makes it a more “special” characteristic to have…unfortunately, I have boring brown eyes.

  14. I am blessed with very BLUE eyes, people have always commented on them being so striking with my jet black hair. So glad I was lucky enough to have blue eye gene. Dark brown, or dark, dark brown eyes make me think of 2 black buttons on some one’s face.

  26. I have yellow in the center which quickly fades to turquoise with a dark ring along the outer edge of the iris. and if the light hits them just right you can actually see that one is truly green while the other is truly blue. What does that make my eyes?

  27. My best friend has the most gorgeous green eyes that have every shade of green in them and a hit of gold with what we have deemed dirty red hair. It react to the sunlight like a blondes hair (mine) creating natrual highs and lows with blonde streaks in the very front. such a beautiful combination and surprisingly she has no freckles however I (the blonde) do.

Colored contacts are just as bad as fake nails or hair extensions or wigs, weaves, implants, botox etc. it just falsifies ones true image. Unless they are for Halloween and make your entire eye white or whatever unnatural designe

  28. I have yellow in the center that quickly fades to turquoise with a dark circle around the edge of the iris. If the light hits my eyes just right my left eye is actually green and my right eye is actually blue a brilliant bright blue. What does that mean? How many people have two different colored eyes?

I am naturally blonde which I haven’t seen much of lately, the majority I have witnessed have been “fake blondes” with bleached hair. I wonder what the stats on blondes say…

Contacts are just another mask society has provided to hide our true identities, because deep down we all have to be exactly the same: perfect. Which there is no such thing so why even toss around the concept??

  29. Never heard of anything go extinct just because it stopped turning up in one country. Silly really, the rate may drop in the US but in Europe it will still remain, for how long who knows but I’m sure we can send some nice blue eyed people your way in a few centuries to put in Zoos when the time comes.

Interestingly it seems our ancestors all had brown eyes at one point.

Much as one day it may happen it would be a shame to see some of the diversity of human traits disappear.

  30. Mine are just plain brown.

I’ve worn colored contacts before and after a while it just didnt feel right to me so I stopped. While It’d be great if my eyes were naturally a different color, I’d rather just live with what I have.

Although my favorite eye color is green, it just seems very mesmerizing, like I could stare into them all day.

  31. We mustn’t forget that beauty gravitates toward the average. A study recorded by Scientific American about 6 or 7 years ago (sorry, don’t have the issue handy) showed that most people like mending of features and not the exotic. This was a survey over a large demographic. They used computer software to mix features — nose, cheekbone, hair (style), color, etc. and asked people who they thought was most attractive. Unexpectedly, the participants leaned toward the largest mix, or the most average; top of the bell curve of facial features, as it were.

People like the rare, though, so that’s obviously a factor in attraction or notice, so I’m pretty sure the recessive color in eyes will propagate and not disappear. Green or hazel (goldish) eyes always grab a second glance from me :^)

    Colored contacts, why bother?

Now, will the giant mixing pot of eye color become like when you mixed a bunch of playdough together and it looked like mud? I really don’t think so. Humans have been around for a long time. You will always see interesting bright eye color. Blue won’t just go away.

My older brother, however, had fiery red hair as a little kid, but now he’s 19 and it’s all brown like mine. So i wonder if it’s true about the red hair becoming extinct???

  37. I have natural blue eyes and blond hair. I hate reading things like this because in the future, no one will be unique. Everyone will have brown hair and brown eyes. I want to my kids to have blonde or red hair and green or blue eyes. So if I want my kids like this then I would have to marry a blonde or redhead guy. This is just one of the things that bugs me for some reason. No that I’m thinking about it, I cant really compare the color of my eyes to anything. I guess if I had to they are pretty close to the color of the plus sign button next to the save button.

They said if they had kids with someone with brown eyes , our eyes would have most likely been brown. That would be sad because blue eyes are the best, I would never wear coloured contacts. 42. You’ve raised more questions in my mind: how is a recessive gene passed to fruition? did blue eyes originate in Scandinavia from a germanic tribe? is there any biological or evolutionary advantage to having blue eyes, or blonde hair, or red hair? why do these traits seem to come from northern europe? I guess I’ll have to ask my own question!

  48. I don’t have a preference either. Eyes are just one part of what can make someone attractive and for me, they’re not all that significant. Blue eyes can be attractive, but they can also be unattractive on certain people too. Personally I wear green contacts over my natural brown eye color because I think the color suits me. Contacts are no different than hair dye or any other beauty product (including fashion). So people claiming it’s wrong or a ‘lie’ make me giggle.

Well, my ma has brown eyes and my dad has Blueish hazel eyes or greenish hazel eyes. So, how did I get blue eyes? But apperently you marry someone with that same colored eyes as your dads.
But, i feel speical now. My eyes use to be a navy blue color when I was little then when I started to go through puberty my eyes turned lighter blue with a golden ring around the pupils. I have been told that my eyes are unique and a color that no one has seen before. Lol I feel so special right now.

  57. Colored contacts are just creepy sometimes. My mom changed hers from brown to blue with colored contacts for a while, it was not cool. Some people are just not meant to have blue eyes.

My sister and I both have blue eyes and blonde hair even though my parents both have brown eyes and brown hair. (We’re definitely not adopted) What do you think the chances of that happening are? Pretty slim, I’d say! But other than that, no idea. XD

I was just wondering what the percentage of blue eyed americans was yesterday. Thanks for this article!

  59. I have white eyes naturally, I know it seems odd but they do look like I have contacts because they do look lighter grey where the color should be but my optometrist calls them white. she says it comes from a rare disease that actually comes when you are born. I really don’t care what anybody else thinks of me because I am fine with who I really am. I don’t sunburn but I also don’t tan either. most people around here that I know actually have blue eyes. I really don’t care what color eyes another person has, I look for what they are like. I am covered with scars, bruises, I am 5 foot 10, I weigh around 190 pounds, so you can actually imagine that I don’t look like the friendliest of guys around, more like the aftermat of a fight you see in a movie, but I am friendly, and most of my life I have been picked on, but I still don’t care, I will not change who I am because of it. So to make my point I really don’t think people should wear colored contacts unless it is for a movie or something

  61. Wearing lenses only makes someone more attractive to people who like blue eyes… they do not change who the person is. The color of a person’s eyes do not determine who the person is. I have naturally blue eyes and have considered wearing lenses to have lighter blue eyes, and even brown eyes. Some people just like to have fun and be creative. Hence why we have hair dye and makeup.

  72. I have blue eyes and brown hair. I read somewhere once that people with blue eyes are all somehow more genetically realated to each other. This is because the gene for having blue eyes was acutally a mutation that occured millions of years ago.

  73. I’ve got green eyes and my hair is brown with a red cast.Technically, most shades of brown are a variation of red. Also hair color can change over time with out artifical dye. the sun or lack of can change hair color and some people’s hair changes naturally without cause.

  83. I have grayish blue eyes and some people thought I wore contacts. I don’t like them, I think they are really dull. I would rather have a color like light brown or green. My favorite are green, they are really mysterious, and greenish blue are also gorgeous. I know this guy who has “ice” blue eyes and they are really pretty. Oh and I saw someone with gold eyes and they were amazing. I love almost all eye colors and even though I don’t like mine I wouldn’t wear contacts because I think everyone’s eye color fits them. :)

  86. I have blue eyes! YAY! I’m rare! You know my friend said that if you have light skin and light-colored eyes, then you’re mutated. I thought that was funny because I’m like albino white with light blue/ green eyes. My friends all LOVE my eyes because (depending on the light) they are green on the outside and a pretty blue on the inside. Anyway, I love guys with medium-blue eyes and (like me) blonde, or brown hair! So cute!

They are the wilndow to my soul. they are very exspresive. This color hits one person in my family every three generations. My great great grand child will have my eyes! 92. I think all eye colors are great but i suppose greenish blue eyes are my favorite i suppose i naturally think this because that is the eye color i have but i think it is a very mysterious and alluring eye color when i see it on someone else. No i dont think i would ever get colored contacts because it would kinda make me feel like a fake and it would be awkward if someone told me that i had pretty eyes cuz i would have to say um no they are just contacts but dont get me wrong that is just my opinion but there is nothing wrong with colored contacts.

Of course I don’t really have a problem with people dying their hair, even though that is fake. 106. I have blue eyes, but my husband’s are a striking emerald green. (No one can figure out where those green eyes came from, since he is otherwise a near-clone of the other men on his father’s side of the family, and green eyes don’t run on his mother’s side either.) Neither of my parents has blue eyes, but one my grandparents did. Since everyone else in our families has hazel, grayish, or light-brown/amber eyes, I’ve often wondered what color eyes our biological children might have had. By the way, blue are apparently the result of a genetic mutation. Originally, we all had brown eyes, and those of us with blue eyes can trace our ancestry back to a single man or woman. One wonders what that man’s or woman’s parents thought when their baby’s baby blues stayed that way.

  118. I love having brown eyes! Since blue or green eyes are labeled as “special” and “rare” I suppose most would think I hate them. Few prefer brown eyes, but I love men with brown ones! I think blue and green are okay, it is just that is mostly what we see on tv, movies, and ads so I am used to them. That is funny considering what this blog had to say. I think dark eyes are friendly, mysterious, kind, warm, and sexy. Women with brown eyes can wear any color eye make up and it fits. I have also read that light color eyes have more sensitivity to sun light. That would be awful considering I live in Arizona! Anyway, you can probably tell that I love brown eyes by now! I think all eyes are pretty in their own way.

  125. Eye Colour…

    Who cares ?
If you do why ? – Is it some sort of repressed discrimination, or even some form of open discrimination?
Do you equally care about the colour of someone’s skin etc ?
Did Hitler not want to create the perfect Blue-eyed blonde haired race ?
Are you concerned that we may all end up with the same eye colour?
Did you not know that you can use contact lenses to make your eye colour appear different?
Did you also not know that hair dyes can make hair colour different?

Point is… if you care, why do you care? Another difference is just another thing to discriminate against other people with.

    Remember Jane Elliot ?

…But even if I didn’t like them, I’d never wear colored contacts. I just think that it would be a let down if someone complimented your eyes, and then you had to tell them that they were just contact lenses. Most of the time they look fake anyways.

My eyes usually change a bit of color depending on the lighting or other colors influencing it. I get compliments saying my eyes are so green, they look like cat eyes! The cool thing about green eyes is that they sometimes change colors. Mine have been only bright green for the first 10 years of my life, but for the past few years, they’ve been changing. Sometimes they’re emerald, sometimes they’re grey, sometimes they’re blue, some times they’re aqua, and occasionally even hazel. But mostly they’re green, and I love ‘em. :)

  142. My dad has blue eyes & my mom has green eyes. So, I guess it was a toss-up between the 2 recessive genes. My mom assumed both of us (her children) would be green-eyed since that was the darker color. Both of us wound up with baby blues, lol. But her eldest child (my bro) got a purer blue colored & I got a blue-green that is 1 time of 3 mistaken for green. But, it turns out wicked, cuz some days they look a pretty sea-green. XD
I’m very fascinated with all this genetic stuff. I assumed most people had blue eyes since I live in a very small town that’s made up of people of mostly German ancestory.

  154. I like all eye colors but have to say BROWN are my favorite, and not because its common, but because i think blue eyes are kind of creepy! Especially the lighter ones because their so… clear. I love the dark, mysterious look to brown eyes. And btw, I know all you blue eyed people FEEL special, but its not actually that great, 1/6 of the world is about 1 billion people! Just putting it out there…

  155. i have very light blue eyes that have white specks in them, and then a dark blue ring around them. i love my eyes, and get compliments on them constantly, haha. and a lot of people think i wear contacts since my eyes don’t look real, apparently.

  157. I was always told that having blue eyes is a default with the genes; like when ur a baby if ur eyes dont change then its at fault and then it can get passed on ? Idk.

I like green eyes and dark brown hair. Altho i must say i wish i had blue eyes…

  158. Blue-Green myself, like my mum, but my dad is heterozygous blue/brown. He got his blue from his dad, who got it from his dad, but their eyes were all visibly brown because brown is dominant.
Very improbable, I know, but that’s life lol

  159. To be honest, in the Northern and most south-westerly parts of Ireland, blue eyes are the most common, but in the rest, brown are.

  161. That’s weird. I know loads of people with blue eyes. It’s actually the most common in my school of 750. I don’t see many people with brown eyes but maybe that’s just cause I live in Ireland, I dunno.

  162. I have blue eyes and they change color throughout the year. In the spring they will go from being kind of green like they are now to silver. From there they will change too blue and then back to green again.

  163. Oh I hope red heads don’t go extinct. Alot of my best friends have red hair and it’s really pretty. Well I guess that we could always die our hair. I wonder if there werent any red heads and you died you hair red it would be like dieing your hair blue? That would be weird. By the way, my eyes are hazel, and I think they’re reallly cool because they change color depending on what I’m wearing. But blue eyes are really pretty to I love them!

  164. i have blue eyes, and to be honest i see a lot more than what the facts prove, maybe because they stand out so much but yeah i love the color of my eyes and would never get colored contacts to change them. But also, i find red hair to be absolutely beautiful, probably because of how rare it is.

  166. I have green eyes. but that comes from my Spanish ancestors. Both my Grandpa and Grandma had green eyes. So did my Mom. My dad had brown eyes. My wife wanted our kids to have green eyes too. But none of them do. I wonder why that is. My sister, and brothers have green eyes too. I guess they come from the Mother. Because my sisters kids do have green eyes. Yet me and my brother’s kids do not. Go Figure !!

  167. I stilld ont understand what’s the impotance of ‘being rare’… I mean is having blue eyes going to make someone interesting… I doubt it. I hardly notice wether or not people have colored eyes unless it’s like someone dark skinned with really light eyes. As for European Descendants I pretty much dont expect their eyes to be brown. Anyways, point is, so what if your eyes are blue. You not gonna get cool points for ur eyes being a certain color by many people, unless its like a *superficial* person looking for certain phenotypical traits to pick their mate (which i find sad). My eyes are brown (black) and my hair is deep brown (black) however I still feel unique.. without the presence of blue eyes. I haven’t seen too many duplicates of me (well none at all)… so~ ya

  168. I really hope red-heads don’t go extinct it’s a beautiful hair colour. I have bluey green eyes that people argue if they’re blue or green. I’d never change them.

  169. I have blue eyes that are the truest shade of blue. When I wear purple they take on that weird blue purple. My son has brown eyes and I don’t know what color eyes the baby in my tummy will have. Crossing fingers for her to have mine. But,my sons eyes are are almost like golden taupe. When the light reflects on his eyes, there beautiful color is vivid and stunning.

  170. green is still the rarest though since it’s the combination of blue and brown. it’s basically a mutation….

  171. Thanks for the info but you forgot to mention that blue eyes are basically inherent in Caucasians (so that primarily applies to people of European descent).

There’s nothing wrong with Not having blue eyes but people are just used to blue eyes more considering that N. America has alot of people of European descent!

Let’s not discriminate against those who don’t have blue eyes or is Not of European descent or is not Caucasian!

You should do the more research about hereditary and eye color!

  172. I’m of Chinese descent, so I have brown eyes. My favorite eye color has always been blue, and I always thought it would be cool if I could change my eye color. I think I could actually pull it off because my father and I both have the “interracial half-white” look, but I like everything to be natural. I’d hate to try to be someone I’m not.

  173. I don’t have blue eyes, and they aren’t attractive to me at all. I prefer brown eyes or hazel eyes. And thankfully, I’ve always been satisfied with my dark, almost black, eyes. The fact that blue eyes are rare is a little weird for me, as I seem to constantly meet people with blue eyes, and hardly any brown or green. And I’ve only met one person with hazel.

  179. My eyes are steel grey but I never want contacts that changes my eye color! I really like women with emerald green eyes. I really think this article you read in the New York Times is very interesting. But since I live in Southern California, I read the Los Angeles Times.

  180. I have very light blonde hair and blue eyes and so do all my brothers and sisters. My parents both have blue eyes and are both naturally blonde but my mum died her hair brown. Not surprising though, My mum is Swedish and my dad German, dad moved to Sweden to be with my mum, then I was born in Sweden and so were 3 of my 5 brothers and sisters, before we moved to Australia. So I’m guessing blonde hair is going tot be around in our family for a while. (and I’ve never understood why Americans spell the word blonde without an e)
