This week marks the start of the annual Consumer Electronics Show. Held each year in Las Vegas, CES is known for previewing many new gadgets, electronics and products that are likely to change the tech marketplace.

This year, Ben Patterson from Yahoo! Tech thinks that 3D on HDTV, Smartphones, and e-books are the hot items (read more here) Others say gadgets like an iPhone credit card reader may end up being one of the items to watch.

Either way, in the past, companies have used CES to introduce the following products into the mainstream marketplace:

  • Blu-Ray Disc (2004)
  • Xbox, 2001
  • DVR, 1999
  • DVD, 1996
  • Tetris, 1988
  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), 1985
  • Compact Disc Player (CD Player, 1981
  • Camcorder, 1981
  • Video Cassette Recorder (VCR), 1970

It’s like how internet killed libraries, TVs, etc…
People on these days no longer watch television. They don’t use libary anymore.

I like gadgets like… PSP GO, I-POD, LCD..LED..HD..televisions. HDTV would be awesome. :)

  24. Technology makes me complete tasks easier at times. However technology has not changed my life; i mean thats pretty lame. An Ipod changed someone’s life? Come on…

Technology has its downsides as well. It makes kids sit in front of the TV and play video games all day while getting fat instead of playing sport. It disconnects people from social face to face interaction (texting, facebook, etc). eg: Its easier to send 20 text messages apparently, rather than picking up the phone and either talking or meeting person face to face for a chat.

Is it any wonder now there’s a generation of inept social idiots who are too lazy and can’t be bothered using their brain power to think things through; as there’s always a piece of technology to do the thinking for them.

Technology definitely has its positives, but there’s a lot of negatives that often get overlooked.

do you remember the old cameras? Having to load the film into the cameras… making sure it doesn’t get exposed when you take it out… then you have to go and get it developed… what a hassle…
With digital cameras you could upload the photos right to your computer… save it… edit it…
    Such a wonderful invention…

  33. To the person whom said “Changed my life? None have changed my life. How does an IPod change anyones life? It changes the way you listen to music. It doesnt change your life”:

iPods (and other MP3 players) have changed our lives in more than the way we listen to music. Now that I’ve been using the iPhone for a while, I could never go back. It has changed my life. Its got the best mobile browser, email, touch screen, etc. It also house tens of thousands of apps that have changed my life in more ways than “just the way I use a phone”.

I would also say that my laptop has changed my life. Its the first entertainment laptop/desktop replacement (I have 2 desktops in my home, just collecting dust :S). I wasn’t around to really remember the first laptops (or wasn’t old enough to use one), but they sure have come along way.

Besides gadgets (or well I guess they go hand-in-hand) are the social networking websites. Any free time I have is largely used tweeting or on facebook.

  41. Well I have to say the I phone due to it having my music collection and all of the other stuff like e mail, texting etc.But lets not get carried away with technology a gadget has to be useful and the features need to be used to make it worth while investment.
A lot of hype is going on at the minute on smart phones, but do you really use all the features on offer?. A cost benefit analysis would show most people would not need them, unless your running a business do you really need such a fancy phone?
To just chat and send useless gossip and texts which are of no use to any one. I can see a lot of people signing up for smart phones and then finding out there expensive to run and wanting out of the 3yr contract!
Just my point of view by my gut feel is there expensive toys, do we all want to end up crouched over a phone all day communicating with people in such an in personal manner?, time will tell I guess.

  43. I also have to ask the question are we slaves to these gadgets, example does the cell phone help you or are you a slave to it?
How many times have you been chatting with somebody and they break the conversation to answer the bloody phone? Its rude and bad manners !, let the call go to voice mail and then ring back when u have finished your conversation! Technology is damaging relationships too, its easy for ur partner to have an affair now they can chat and text there lover without you knowing. Tiger Woods for example classic he got caught by his phone!. Technology has a lot of negatives too, destroying relationships being one!

You all know what the final killing blow to BluRay discs was?

The dirt cheep discs all over japan now that hold both DVD and BluRay at the same time on the same side.

So, Is RIAA responsible for them not being available in the USA? has it something to do with those 5$ dvd’s all over the streets?

  64. As a teacher, I am surprised constantly at the number of new ‘toys’ that are around and about for schools. The problem is two-fold – money to purchase these much needed contraptions, and helping the ‘traditional’ teachers get pass their fear of the new toys and give them a try in their classrooms. In our school, we have GRADEKEEPER, which is the method to put grades, assignments, projects in the system. It is the new way to allow parents to communicate online with teachers. They can see their child’s grade, assignments, projects, due dates, and see notes that teachers can write immediately. Parents can also respond. Much of the new tech is about helping parents and teachers communicate (email, sharing websites and pages, etc.) The classroom has also changed. Many schools have purchased compact computers (notebooks, laptops, etc) for each student in a class. Students find books online, and other resources that they had to depend upon the library. Some classrooms are almost empty of books which is not good. We have math and science probes and technical resources that have not been experienced in the past. Huge screens are positioned in classrooms that a teacher only has to hook up the students with their own ‘clickers’ and students can respond to test questions and quizzes while watching all of the information take place on this screen. Students have the ability to locate websites and ‘teach’ themselves a concept, work the worksheets, listen to the ‘teacher’ online review, then take online quizzes and play games that reinforce the concept. They are able to communicate with other students throughout the US when working on similar or collaborative projects. It’s awesome.

  65. I’m a bit of a music lover…

’60s = Stereo/FM – We had one of the first stereo hi-fis–two ears = two speakers
    ’70s = Cassette/Walkman – my music–portable!
’80s = CD – Vinyl was a pain to deal with
’90s = Web – Information is so much easier to get now
’00s = iPod – Having “all” of my music with me is something that I only dreamed of…

Excuse me, I’m going to go read a book now–the paper kind–and you kids should get off my lawn.

  66. Radios for one. I was so fascinated by radios and cassette recorders and loved (and still love) music so much that I went into engineering to figure out how they work. Of course, now I’m into iPods, GPS, netbooks, routers, DVR, microprocessors, digital signal processing, fiber optic data transmission etc. And I have a great career as a result of loving the gadgets that were available when I was a kid.
