Give big this holiday season
It’s the time of the year when the stores become flooded with shoppers and families begin to gather to start celebrating the holidays. While many of us are lucky to have friends and family near to celebrate with, it’s important to remember that there are many who are less fortunate.
This holiday season, ask yourself how you can not only spread goodness to the ones you love, but throughout your community:
- Can you donate a toy to Toys For Tots or similar local toy drive?
- Do you have a few extra cans of food in your cupboard that you won’t eat? Why not drop them off at a local food bank ?
- Do you have a few extra hours to spare? Try volunteering at a local community center, soup kitchen, children’s center, or hospital.
- Donate blood– 1 pint of blood can save up to 3 lives. Learn more
- Lend a hand to a local animal shelter (or donate blankets, towels, or pet food)
Sites like “Volunteer Match” are great resources in pairing up volunteers with their interests—and, making them fun.
And, if you want to share your goodness with the world, you can share your “purple acts of kindness” with the world by posting them on http://kindness.yahoo.com – here, you’ll also find links to the Global Giving project and the DonorsChoose project.
So with all of these resources at your fingertips, what gift do you plan on giving your community this holiday season?

I think a lot of the above mentioned can be done all year round not just at the holidays. I would also donate to a local animal shelter to be sure that the animals get proper care also.
We did adopt a family, whcih we do every year. We bought everything on their list, and they sent us a letter saying how much we’ve changed their lives. Warms your heart.
@Liza,
Of course! How could I forget our furry friends! I’ll add them to the list

I have also done some, including blood donations to send some clothes there is toys. I hope that we can take action and do something more meaningful activities!
I’m not giving a gift…I’m in incubation (sp). for a disease. I eat at the hospital have no food in the home, etc. I can’t donate time. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Yamster. Truly, Susan D. S.
I’m not sure if I can do all of the things listed above, but I’m already going to be donating a lot of my old toys from when I was young to Toys For Tots, I don’t need them anymore, so the kids who are less fortunate will probably be happy. Hope you all have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
There are times in life when people who are less fortunate in life are mostly remembered and this is the season. My x-mas this year would be the worst ever because I lost my parent in Motor accident. Now I’m left alone in the world with nothing. How are my going to celebrate this X-mas. I really feel for those who are less privilege and solely believing in lending out a helping hand to make everyone feel happy this season.
