Did you know that on December 12, 2005, Yahoo! Answers publicly launched in the United States? (Read the press release, dated December 8th, 2005, here)

While Yahoo! Answers may only be turning 4 years old, we share our birthday with quite a few other people, including:

  • Alfred Werner (Nobel laureate and Swiss chemist)
  • Frank Sinatra (the famous crooner)
  • Bob Barker (the former host of TV’s “The Price is Right”)
  • And more!

The first question on Answers

To celebrate our birthday, we thought it would be fun to take a quick trip down memory lane and find out what question was first asked on Yahoo! Answers in the US. Four years ago, you all were just as curious about quirky things as you are today, and asked: “Why are yawns contagious?

There’s no way that we could have ever made it to the four year mark without the help and support of the Answers community, so thank you for all your feedback, comments, questions, and answers over the years!

Share your story!

Whether you’ve been an Answers user for the past four years or the past four days, we’d love to hear how you heard about Yahoo! Answers—please go here and tell us how you first came across Yahoo! Answers, and what made you first want to “Ask” or “Answer” a question.

We’ll then go through your submissions and will pick a “Best Answer” based on the number of “Thumbs up” the answer receives and, based on the quality of your answer. So, be sure to give your answer some thought, and tell us about how, and when you first came across Yahoo! Answers! Submissions will close MONDAY, December 14th at 9am PT (5pm GMT) (Time zone converter)

  6. I had a Yahoo email account and ‘googled’ a short question in the search bar…ended up at yahoo answers and have been here ever since; finally joined up and became a contributor and then I really got addicted.

  8. The only thing i use to do on this computer was read the front page news then a few times i visited shine,it was not too bad, only thing the questions looked the same most of the times, tried google always got incorrect email does not match password, tried black single didn’t like the faces so most of the times i played solitair ha ha sounds like fun, not.I then accidently hit a word called answers,i said what’s this,i answered a few questions and then i was getting points i said oh yes something to do while i cook the lamb.Different categories spell check and people reading your thoughts bring it on.

  16. I have been a member of Yahoo! Answers since April 20, 2006, which means I have participated almost as long as the service has been in existence. I do not specifically recall how I first became aware, but I suspect I was searching for information on Yahoo! and discovered it that way.

  17. The principal problem with Yahoo! Answers, by the way, is the erratic method in which the “community guidelines” are enforced. A person is likely to receive a “violation” notice merely because some other participant was offended by a truthful answer.

Also, at the bottom of this webpage, we see the notice, “Yahoo! does not evaluate or guarantee the accuracy of any Yahoo! Answers content.”

That is obviously untrue, because Yahoo! assesses a penalty for answers which, in its view, violate the community guidelines. By assessing penalty points, Yahoo! is clearly “evaluating” the content, and should not state that it does not do so. Shouldn’t we impose a penalty on the Yamster for that statement?

  22. I knew about Yahoo Answers, the other version that Yahoo answered themselves for a while and found out about Yahoo Answers in the summer of 2006. At first it was immediately addicting and now has answered some of life’s questions I could never seem to resolve.

I got a Yahoo! email address in April 2008 mainly because I wanted to be able to use Yahoo! Answers. I think that’s a good reason.

  24. I don’t remember if I found ‘Answers’ by accident or ti appeared on my ‘Toolbar’ and I clicked on it.
During the first year I really enjoyed answering questions as I thought I was helping the person who asked the question. I got excited when my response was picked as the best as I had put a lot of effort into my responses. I even thought I had stopped an individual from committing suicide. Now many if not most of the questions are people just ‘trolling’. Now I mostly pick what I think is the best answer.

  25. I kept on getting links to yahoo answers whenever I googled a question, and it always had the best answers. I found all the other answers sites a bit shabby and less informative, and thought YA looked pretty cool:) But it was like half a year before I finally signed up…I don’t know why…but yeah I finally did. And finally got an orange TC friend last week! It isn’t all that hard really:) A bit addictive but I’m keeping it controlled.

  26. Yahoo! Answers is a click away on Yahoo! email hosting and this is how I discovered Yahoo! Answers. Glad I did because lots and lots of useful information is shared through Yahoo! Answers, I’ve steadily been making contacts with others on Yahoo! Answers, and my contact list will no doubt grow and grow because of Yahoo! Answers. Thanks for being here, Yahoo! Answers and congratulations to one and all on the 4-years-of-service milestone!

  31. I have to say that it was while searching for an answer to a silly- and non-typical question. I realized then, that it Yahoo Answers existed. I fell in love with it from the begining. It is like a paradise of curiosity. You can ask, search, and find from the most obsurde, to the most simple, and silly subject you can imagine. Up-to-date, I still search online, and among first things that pop-up on search engine is Yahoo Answers. Happy Birthday.

  39. 4 years on and still “Yahoo Answers is Experiencing Difficulties”.

The site needs a domain specific search engine. People on the math section are asking the same question over and over.

Also, people who have no clue should not be posting “I don’t know” kinds of answers.

  40. By a domain specific search engine, I mean the ability to a category first, and THEN search.

  45. I discovered Yahoo!Answers by browsing on Yahoo! one day three years ago.I’ve found resorting to Yahoo!Answers for questions and answers about a lot of things has been very helpful, especially when I couldn’t or still can’t,or don’t,have opportunities to ask or answer questions about anything in person.Overall,I find Yahoo!Answers educational.
