Unexpected playlists: Vatican adds Tupac to its playlist

Last week, the Vatican added rapper Tupac Shakur’s song “Changes” to its playlist on MySpace. The MySpace playlist contains eight tracks, including Mozart, Muse, and Fleet Foxes.

While the Vatican’s choice may resonate with some people, it may strike a different note with others, as the rapper was well known for his role in the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry.

Despite Tupac’s social ties, the Vatican’s choice of a playlist prompts this question: If you had to select eight tracks that represented you, what would they be? Enter your playlist below, and be sure to tell us why you selected the tracks you did!

  19. I have nothing against that. After all, Christianity should be about empathizing with people, understanding them, to make the world a better place. Music (and art in general) is related to that- it’s a way to transmit ideas, feelings. The background of an artist should not affect the impression one has on his art, maybe just help people understand it better. After all, Van Gogh cut his ear, Picasso was not fully sane either as far as I can recall, or still we appreciate their art (I’m not saying Tupac is a genius artist like them, because that is simply a matter of opinion and my opinion is “no”. I just wanted to show the similarity).

Oh, and the songs which represent me:
1.Sting-“Soulcake”-It remembers me that people should have Christmas in their hearts in every day of their lives, that to be fully happy you have to make others happy as well. You have to appreciate Sting’s talent as well, this song is amazing. So I guess it’s sort of an item in a “to-do” list in my brain: to be better.
2.Frank Turner-“The road”-All my live I’ve wanted to travel around the world, and the word that popped up in my mind as soon as I heard this song was ‘globetrotter’. It gives me the urge to start running, smiling, travelling, etc (lol)
    3. Akcent-“Buchet de trandafiri”-It’s a romanian song, the title is “Rose bouquet”. I think its lyrics completely fit me…
4.Eminem-“Stan”- shows me how easily people can succumb to madness, and the combination with Dido’s “Thank you” is completely…well, if not freaky at least thrilling. It basically stands as a big warning in case of despair, sentiment of giving up, anything.
5.DJ Satomi-“Castle in the sky”- I simply like to imagine my mind like that.
6.Gorillaz-“Feel Good Inc”- no real reason…but I felt like I had to add it here.
    7.Thousand foot krutch-“Last Words”-again, for motivational purposes.
    8. Yves Larock – “By your side”

  22. I think that’s quite a good thing to do really. It adds some variety to their music and it shows that they are opening up to other music as well. Changes is a great song which delivers a great message, well done Tupac. :)

  30. Wow thats awesome, glad to see their not having such closed minds, and yes Tupac was a “gangsta” rapper but he was a product of his environment, and if you listen to the lyrics of “changes” it has a positive message like many of his songs…. and Suge Knight had a lot to do with the “gangsta” image.

  33. 1. Steady – CYNE
    2. The Soft Parade – The Doors
    3. Blind Faith – Dream Theater
    4. Eve – Emancipator
    5. Greet Death – Explosions In The Sky

    7. Ballad of a Thin Man – Bob Dylan
    8. Darkness Deepens/Sometimes – La Coka Nostra
    9. Meditation – The Last Emperor
    10. The King of Carrot Flowers (all parts) – Neutral Milk Hotel

I couldn’t even select 8 tracks. Hell, I could keep going with that list for a while. Also, I guess I could also say that several mashup artists’ songs could represent me in regards to how my brain operates (artists like E-603, Ludachrist, Milkman, Torpeedoh, etc)

And to be a music snob, I’m disappointed that so many people consider themselves to be represented by nothing but pop music. Come on people, have some kind of spirit of originality. Every artist that I listed there is a master of their craft and I highly recommend looking up those songs/artists.
