Its fine to say duck tape instead of duct tape accualaly b/c when it was first invented for use in ww2 thats what it was origginally called cuz it was water proof and green then they renamed it duct tape b/c after the war was over they used it to repair ducts.. but so many people dont say the t at the end anyway so prettty much either is acceptable now, so seriously people get the facts before you make rude comments about "stupid people"

I used white duct tape to cover an ugly rotted away part of a wood window frame. Holding well and you can't even tell from up close!

#1) I worked with sheet metal in one of my past lives. Most of our work was making and installing A/C ductwork. Duct tape is neither appropriate nor allowed in that work. There is a solid aluminum tape made for that purpose.
#2) For the most part I hate duct tape. The adhesive gets on everything and will not come off - ever! On the other hand, the adhesive hardens (especially in hot, cold, and/or moist conditions) and the tape backing will come apart.
#3) As an endorsement: I drove Heavy Haul trucks cross country for many years (over 2,000,000 miles) and got the front of my truck run over by a tractor trailer in a truckstop one night in Indiana. I duct taped the fender, which was literally only attached at the rear, back to the hood, went to the West coast, then went to New England before returning to the terminal in Atlanta and having the front end replaced. This was in the winter too, so was subjected to much cold, slush, and salt. But it was only a matter of about a week or two and I cleaned the surfaces extremely well before applying. Took a roll and a half and I had to redo/add on West Coast.
#4) So duct tape is useful for emergency repairs sometimes but you will not be able to use whatever it is in the same way as before - it will have to be replaced.
#5) Gaffer's tape is to duct tape as painter's tape is to masking tape. Use the first if you have a choice, the second destroys!

I once wrapped my sock in duct tape, it was a long road trip and had a roll so...
I was going to test if I could put it in my pook without getting my sock wet but the problem was that I couldn't get my sock off!

I agree that Gaffer's tape is even better. It's like duct tape on steroids. It holds everything
