Ask Mike: All hail duct tape

Tags:

Hey Guys,

When it comes to home repairs, I’m not the handiest guy around. But I do have one sure-fire tool that fixes just about any problem I come across. Duct tape. I’ve used duct tape to “fix” cupboards, shelves, and even a refrigerator door (one of my finest hours). Who do I have to thank for this awesome invention?

A search on “duct tape inventor” yielded solid results. My first stop was at a blog from Ace Hardware. “The Helpful Hardware Blog” credits Johnson & Johnson with creating duct tape back in 1930. Interestingly, the tape was initially intended for use in hospitals, and due to its waterproof materials, it was dubbed “Drybak.”

Drybak didn’t become duct tape (and its grey color) until after World War II. Apparently, that’s when air conditioning hit the mainstream. Duct tape (as it soon became known) was used by repairmen to seal off drafty ducts.

Over the years, duct tape has acquired an enviable fan base. There are dozens of sites that list all the different uses one can find for the sticky substance. The Duck Tape Club offers contests for the most creative use of the all-purpose tape. But, if you ask me, that honor has to go folks who choose to put duct tape on warts. Though it hasn’t been proven to help, many feel a little duct tape on those unsightly blemishes will make them disappear.

And what about you? What’s your most creative use of duct tape? I’ve seen car bumpers held up with it, wallets made out of it, and even prom dresses and tuxedos reated from it. Please leave a comment below and share the love.

Thanks for reading,

Mike

  6. Even better than duct tape is Gaffers’ Tape. It hold better and doesn’t leave a sticky residue or lift paint when you take it off. Ask any roadie or photographer and they will sing its praises.

Not meaning to burst a bubble but duct tape is not recommended for ducts by ari conditioning/heating pros. It gets brittle and then leaks air.

  8. I’ve used it for practicly everything.. I’ve used it make custom boxes along with carboard (with flaps and cubby holes) I’ve used it to temporarily fix leaks in the ceiling.. I pretty much use it without even thinking about it anymore, rather then working out some complicated fix for things, i just put a little duct tape to it.. Like the holder for the water bottle for my rats.. It’s meant to attatch to an actual cage, but I have an aquarium.. A little duct tape to permantly affix the metal holder it coems with, a bit of bending, and voila…

  18. In middle school, the rubber sole part of my sneaker fell completely off in the front half, so my foot could stick all the way out!
My dad wrapped it up with duct tape all over to save money on new shoes. It covered the laces and everything, so I just had to squeeze my foot in every morning. Also, the tape wrapped all around, so it made the bottom uneven and kind of hard to walk on. They lasted me that whole year and I got used to the uneven sole, but I got teased a ton. The called me a poor bum! D’=
It wasn’t my fault my dad was such a cheap scrooge!
I think it might have been a little better if the other one matched….

  20. There was a duct tape on the market several years ago called ‘ 300 MPH Tape ‘ and it’s the best I’ve ever seen. NASCAR used it during races to keep the cars on the track. I repaired huge cracks in a plastic trailer bath tub with it and it worked like a miracle. I wish I could find some more.

  22. Duck tape is actually correct too. As with most things military, items are assigned a series of letters and numbers. The tape created for the marines in WWII was no exception. So the marines gave it a name, duck tape, because it was resistant to water, just like a duck’s feathers. It later became duct tape, rigger’s tape, 100 mph tape, speed tape, gun-tape (Canadian), hurricane tape, and Panzertape (because the Germans consider it as tough as a tank).

  25. My boyfriend is just as enthusiastic about duct tape as you are I’d say lol He is always talking about something else he fixed with his roll of duct tape. And he flipped out one day when he saw an episode of, I think it was myth busters, where they used duct tape to lift an automobile off of the ground by like 20 ft. He was amazed for days. He didn’t think duct tape could get any better before he saw that lol and he was proven wrong.

  27. I had an old Chevy II (what became a Nova later) in Tucson in 1974. I bought it for $75. The convertible top had been left down for a long time, baking in the sun. When I put it up, the canvas burst to smithereens. I made a new top by wrapping yards of duct tape round and round the frame of the convertible top. I drove my car proudly with my duct tape top until the car failed emissions tests.

  28. About 6 + years back I about totaled my car hitting 2 deer. One rolled over the top of the car and the other slid down the drivers side from front to back. My front left bumper was gone and you could see the battery, and the hood was in shambles and wouldn’t open. As I could not afford my deDUCTible at the time of the accident and still needed to get to college and work I duct taped the car. I made sure I got every hole and any other area that would create a problem, plus I taped the Styrofoam that was inside the bumper back in. Then I used red and clear duct tape to made a headlight so I could still drive at night and not get pulled over. Since I live in the UP eh, I decided to be a smart ass and took a black magic marker and wrote all over the duct tape: “Yooper Band Aid” “I Got Two” “Duct Tape Fixes Everything” I got a lot of laughs from it and even saw a few cars I passed on the road laugh. It’s true what Red Green always said, “Duct tape is a handyman’s favorite tool.”

  33. i first encountered duct tape working at a fan company, ’63 – ’65.
at the time it was green, with a red adhesive.
during that time the adhesive changed from rec to silver-grey.
i presume that the new adhesive didn’t dry out as fast.
    (or was cheaper to produce.)
it was some time after that that the tape changed from green to silver.

and y’all should know that if you keep it in a plastic bag, it keeps for years. lots of years.
if you just leave it out, it dries out fairly quickly.

  35. I found a use for duct tape that does fix something but not what people would expect. My 18-month old daughter would keep taking all her clothes off at nap time so she has been known to wet the bed while sleeping. I take a small strip and put it across the front of her diaper when I put it on. So when I put her down for a mid-afternoon snooze, she might have all but the diaper off.

  37. I once got caught in a hail storm on a road trip in Texas. My car sustained damage to the trim around the windshield causing it to break and creating a wind-tunnel effect when driving. I stopped in Sweetwater and bought a roll of duct tape and essentially built a new trim for the windshield. I not only made it successfully home to California, but it worked so well that I left it on for a bit before having to spend the few hundred dollars to replace the trim.

My dad believed in duct tape as the cure all. When I got my first apartment I invited my folks to dinner. Dad showed up with a package of ground beef in case dinner went badly, and he also brought a six pack of duct tape as a housewarming present.

  39. My mom used it to patch a hole on the side wall of her riding lawn mower tire. It was still holding 2 years later when she traded it off. It also works well to patch holes in a down coat, tho it is not exactly pretty. Uglier yet is using it to repair worn out shoes, making them some what water proof as well, depending on how much tape you use.

I was in an after school gifted and tallented program as a kid called “Destination Imagination.” One year we did the improv challenge, we had to research all these people and places and the day of the challenge a judge would pick random people and places and events from the list of things we had to research and we had to put together a skit with the chosen researched people and places and events and items from the approved kit. Duct tape was a favorite because it could be shaped to make almost anything we wanted in our skits.

The pilots got their meal with a big caraffe of red wine, the plane did a sudden dive, the mediterrean looked like a waffle iron, then all hell broke loose. We were in a big, big thunderstorm, the bandaged wing was flapping furiously….

It works so well that I used it to tape up the washing machine front panel when the screws wouldn’t stay in that held the washer together. It worked beautifully after that.
This was after several attempts to keep the screws in I just said heck with it grabbed the duck tape and wrapped it around the entire washer.

  54. I’ve made entire outfits out of duct tape, but the most creative thing was my duct tape parties.
I would invite a few friends over and we would pick two people to be duct taped together (very tightly, back to back). Then, we would turn out the lights, lay the two people on the floor, and see how long it took them to get apart! As a bonus, we would hide a pair of scissors in the room to help them out (but they still had to be mostly out of the tape to even be able to stand or use their arms!) It is really a great party game!

  63. When I was a girl, my family didn’t have much money…at all! So when something broke duct tape was used to fix it. It was used on pipes, furniture, appliances, winter clothing, ski gear, sleds, broken toys (and when we ran out of barbie clothes, duct tape was used to create some cool outfits!), broken tools, cars, etc. Once we got a car with the windows stuck at halfway down because the electrical was disconnected so duct taped was used to cover the opening. We were getting this car to drive 3000 miles from northern California to Florida in early April so we experienced crazy weather changes! It held through blinding snow storms to heavy rain to extreme heat in the east, when we finally ripped it off because no one could breath…. Good times.

When I moved out with my boyfriend, he taught me the proper way to fix just about everything with real tools and the right materials. It was much more effective on the cars lol! Do it right or do it twice was the motto. Duct tape is still always handy (esp if you put it on the inside of RC car tires to keep them from ballooning at high speeds to maintain traction, it works great!) but now I’ve learned to appreciate other useful items like vice grip pliers(so true Evan!), screws, canned air, WD-40, zip ties and electrical tape! Electrical tape is invaluable as well and don’t get me started on zip ties!!

It was definitely interesting to read the history of duct tape, thanks for sharing! :)

  66. My kids would use duct tape to repair their school binders when they were falling apart towards the end of the school year. They liked the appearance so much however, that they would wrap brand new binders in duct tape. Later in college, I saw them use duct tape to repair sneakers when the soles were falling off and to rebind textbooks when the covers were falling off. Sadly, the price of duct tape has gone up and the manufacturers aren’t so generous with the amount you get on one roll, so it’s not as cheap a fix as it used to be.

  80. I made a wallet of duct tape when the Red Green Show was still in production. Red, the king of duct tape, was coming to our city for the PBS telethon at the time and I had the honor of presenting him with my gift. I wasn’t actually on the telethon myself but he showed my wallet and read my name on the air.

  81. I LOVE Duct Tape, it definatly will save your butt if you are in a bind, I have used it for everything from fixing a leaky windshield, to building a toy box, but the most creative thing was using it to pull a car out of a snow bank!!!!!
My tool box has just a few things in it, Duct Tape, WD-40, vice grips, a hammer, a 2 ended screw driver, zip ties, gorrilla glue, and bungie cords, havent met a problem I couldnt fix yet LOL.

completely disintigraded (i think i spelled that wrong, lol) and made new surrounds using (what else did i have on-hand) duk-tap (that spelling was on purpose)
and they sound as good as (almost) new.

  111. Gross! But, before the cutesy two sided wardobe tape, I know women who would duct tape their boobs in order to go braless.

So, I guess the previous answer, about if it moves and it shouldn’t, use duct tape, acutally works.
And the latter, because the duct tape is extremely adhesive, and in order to remove it, you would need WD 40.

  119. #1) I worked with sheet metal in one of my past lives. Most of our work was making and installing A/C ductwork. Duct tape is neither appropriate nor allowed in that work. There is a solid aluminum tape made for that purpose.
#2) For the most part I hate duct tape. The adhesive gets on everything and will not come off – ever! On the other hand, the adhesive hardens (especially in hot, cold, and/or moist conditions) and the tape backing will come apart.
#3) As an endorsement: I drove Heavy Haul trucks cross country for many years (over 2,000,000 miles) and got the front of my truck run over by a tractor trailer in a truckstop one night in Indiana. I duct taped the fender, which was literally only attached at the rear, back to the hood, went to the West coast, then went to New England before returning to the terminal in Atlanta and having the front end replaced. This was in the winter too, so was subjected to much cold, slush, and salt. But it was only a matter of about a week or two and I cleaned the surfaces extremely well before applying. Took a roll and a half and I had to redo/add on West Coast.
#4) So duct tape is useful for emergency repairs sometimes but you will not be able to use whatever it is in the same way as before – it will have to be replaced.
#5) Gaffer’s tape is to duct tape as painter’s tape is to masking tape. Use the first if you have a choice, the second destroys!

Its fine to say duck tape instead of duct tape accualaly b/c when it was first invented for use in ww2 thats what it was origginally called cuz it was water proof and green then they renamed it duct tape b/c after the war was over they used it to repair ducts.. but so many people dont say the t at the end anyway so prettty much either is acceptable now, so seriously people get the facts before you make rude comments about “stupid people”
