Are you worried about Dec. 21, 2012?

I’m a sucker for a good disaster movie.  Films like “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Children of Men,” and “Independence Day” were all fascinating and disturbing, but ultimately safe and cathartic ways to examine our fears about the end of the world. There’s a new disaster flick to add to the list, and if the pre-opening buzz is any indication, we’re in for quite a ride with “2012.”  The new film by Roland Emmerich focuses on the interpretation of the Mayan calendar which predicts that the current life cycle will end on December 21, 2012, speculating that a worldwide apocalypse will ensue.

Let’s face it — though scary, most “end of the world” prophecies are easy to dismiss.  I mean, so many have come and gone throughout history with nothing to show. Just within the last decade, there have been a handful of predicted apocalypse scenarios.  According to Nostradamus, we weren’t supposed to make it past 1999, and even if we did, Y2K was sure to do us in.  Why should  the 2012 prediction be any different?

Well, for one thing, the Mayas were different from, and perhaps a bit more knowledgeable, than some other doomsday foretellers. The Mayan calendar is almost as advanced as our own at predicting astrological phenomena like eclipses and alignments — a pretty amazing feat considering that they didn’t have access to telescopes, satellites, and the other advanced technology that we have at our disposal.  The Mayas chose 2012’s solstice as doomsday based on astronomical observations predicting a squaring-off between the powerful forces of Pluto and Saturn — a phenomenon that, according to my understanding, will indeed occur around that time.

But, to be fair, this same cosmic occurrence has happened many times before, most recently between August 2001 and May 2002, and we came through it just fine.  Much of the hype about 2012 is actually just that: hype.  Even modern Mayas are discounting the validity of the interpretation of their ancient calendar. But no one can deny that we, as a society, love a bit of suspense.  Fueled by Internet speculation, sensationalist authors and scientists, and, of course, the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster, anxiety about 2012 is certainly on the rise and will probably continue to pervade popular culture…at least until 2013 and the next big apocalypse prediction.

Do you believe in the Mayan prophecy regarding Dec. 21, 2012?   And if you knew it were true, how would you like to spend your next (and last) 3 years on earth?

  4. I don’t believe in doomsday prophecies. The date of the end of the world has to be approved by the international commitee of scientists. Even then I might doubt it.

There is no real way to determine exactly when and how the world will end. You need a time machine for that.

  7. Very nice topic if you think about the if ‘s, but based on my religoin (baptist) the end of the world will come as unexpectedly as an oil spill. The end of the world has things that will happen before it as signs, but cannot, may not and will not be predicted. You can reveal the details in Revelations from the Bible. The Mayan prediction is wrong and I would put my life as a wager on it. You can even almost laugh at it. This is however a smart way of scaring people into confesion, but is certainly wrong. Thus the end of the world will come either before or after, but not on Dec. 21, 2012.

  9. I do not believe the prophecy. I remember when it was New Year’s Eve, the night before January 1, 2000. Apparently, the world was about the end with the coming of the millenium.
    And apparently not.
I agree with the point that it is simply hype, probably stirred up by the upcoming movie.

If, however, it were to be true, then I would probably spend my next three years travelling and meeting people.
Unlikely that it is though =P

  10. nice! pretty informative!,

but if most people are getting scared already , eventhough its three years from now….then how much more, if the day has come when it is 3 days left before that alleged doomsday date?,…

will the world be chaotic and in a state of paranoia?, people running here and there,….cars crashing, panic, hysteria, people getting ready to evacuate?,or is it just a scene from last minute christmas sale rush?…

    i don’t know….but let’s just wait and see…

  14. One word: No. It’s a load of crap. I don’t believe in it. I honestly wish people wouldn’t suspect the end just because of the Mayan calendar ending on that date. I remember 2000…That was really chaotic at my school. The most recent doomsday I heard of was 9/09/09. Next is 10/10/10, then 11/11/11, then 12/12/12, and finally 12/21/12. That’s all I heard of. If I knew it was true, I’d probably spend the next 3 years forming some group of teens with me to try and become survivors; just like in the upcoming movie. I don’t even think it’s possible for the planets to align. I remember reading somewhere that there’s a zero chance of that happening. I think that if 2012 really did something, it’d be a new beginning. Nothing big will really happen. Just put some bets with the believers out there and get some money!

  15. No, I don’t. The astrony-based predictions (like in horoscopes and such) are all a hoax. LIfe can’t be predicted by things like planets b/c things change each day. That’s why horoscopes neves come true, and even if they do come true sometimes. There is also a probability factor in it also.

  22. Actually, the stone tablet which had the Mayan calender inscribed on it was too eroded at the end of it to tell what the glyphs meant. It has also been determined that this calender wasn’t a calender record of all of time itself but a calender record of a certain time period of cultural importance to the Mayans, therefore proving this entire rumor totally null.

  26. In my opinion, I wouldn’t think so. If we were so hyped at the moment, since we’re just 3, almost 2 years away,.. we should be questioning about it by now.
Yet, scientists haven’t provened yet, and millions of people are starting to plan their future after 2012 instead worrying about it.

Like most others, I’ll believe when I see it.

  28. A few key flaws of the 2012 theory:
    1. The Mayan predictions often times do not use astronomy to prove their predictions. An example was the end of the previous calender, when they predicted Cortez’s arrival. To base a doomsday theory off speculation is simply foolish
    2. It’s the end of a calender, there are several more afterwards. The calender does predict change at the end of each cycle, but not disaster.
    3. Not to bash the Mayans, but the calender does believe a wild evolution cycle that took place in 10000 years. I don’t think there where fish people in the ancient Egyption time.
    4. Wasn’t there a panic that the world was going to end in 2006, when all the planets where alligned. What’s with alligned masses and doomsday?
    5. Most important, there is very little proven evidence anything will happen. It is no different than Y2K or 1987.

People need to relax. You’re only in the universe for a billionth of its existence, and it is a disservice to yourself and your world to live it in fear. Just relax

  32. The Bible says that the end times will be signaled by a season of peace on Earth like never before. There will be a Rapture, the dead will rise from their graves and the Great Tribulation where the nations form a one world government led by the anti-Christ. A world campaign will be set against Christians, people won’t be able to buy or sell without the mark of the beast and the world will end by fire. I personally don’t see all of this happening in the next 3 years. But, if the end of the world were that close, I wouldn’t be around to see it because I’ll be one of millions who ‘mysteriously’ disappear with Jesus Christs second coming.

  34. No I don’t. Why? Well not one real/legit archaeologist is saying the world is going to end, it just some pseudo-scientists trying to make a quick buck. Comparing that “prophecy” to Y2K makes Y2K seem not such a crack-pot theory. I mean at least it was based on an actual/real-world problem.

P.S. “Children of Men” is on a completely different level than “2012″, it isn’t a cheesy Hollywood blockbuster.

As stated above, it is all hype & we all love a good “what if” story. Just like at camp when we asked “what if…?” our counsler said “what if your mama was a monkey?”
Ok so that doesn’t have much to do with doomsday but still XD

  46. The world is not ending. 2012 is all a hyped up tiny event that gets everyone freaked out. The only reason it exists is because of one thing: The Mayan calendar. The Mayan calendar only lasts about 4000 years (because of the way its designed i.e: 4 weeks, 4 months, 4 years, 4 centuries, ect. until they got to the last unit of time) So the Mayans simply thought that once their calendar ran out then something bad would happen, a simple faulty of an age old calendar, simple as that.

  53. I really believe that the world will not end December 21, 2012 because I believe the world could end at any time. That’s why you are to live each day as if it were your last. No one knows what the future has in store for us and no one can predict the future, not even a psychic. As long as we believe and have faith that we will live for as long as possible, it can and maybe will happen. I will continue to live each day like my last and have faith that my last day won’t come anytime or year soon.

Second, there is NO Mayan prophecy. There is an astronomical prediction about the position of the center of the galaxy, which is nothing remarkable, many civilizations before and after them, were great astronomers.

I understand that humans love these prophecies, they make us think that we are connected with the cosmos. The hype this prediction has caused bears testament on how ignorant and gullible people are. Really, how far are we from going all in with government sponsored faith healing if many people are this gullible?

Though we can conceivably understand how the Mayan’s predicted most solar phenomenon, there is absolutely no evidence that they had any real way of predicting the end of the world. That and, I believe research tells us that the Mayan calender simply ends on December 21, 2012. It does not specifically spell out “Doomsday”.

If it is the end of the world, then so be it. Worrying about it isn’t going to do a single bit of good.

Remember Y2k? that was supposed to be the end of the world too and when we let off the Atom bombs we didn’t know if they would just explode or continue a chain reaction. I’d rather not know if it was the end though. because I would much rather just live my life like it is. I like it

  77. I wish people would take the time to google the Mayan calendar. The Mayan prophecy states that December 21, 2012 is the “End of an Era/Age”.

Historians name periods of time “ages”, just like we’ve named the “Industrial age.”.

December 21, 2012 is the end of a Long Count era of 5,126 year period. That’s it. In fact, Mayan’s believe it is cause for celebration, not terror.

People are just stupid, and believe “hollywood” notions, without looking up anything.

I hope people freak out on December 21, 2012… because when we all wake up on December 22, 2012, I am going to laugh my butt off!

  80. Personally, I believe the “Saturn and Pluto Opposition” is rubbish. It is a 33-year cycle however, that kind of positioning will not happen again till 2034, though in 2019 we will observe Saturn transiting Pluto. The “Opposition” will not take place in or around 2012. Just wanted to throw that out.

No I don’t believe the Mayan “Prophecy” of 2012… especially because there was no prophecy about a doomsday (arguably).

If I knew it to be true, I’d spend the last three years visiting the most beautiful places on earth.

This hooey, like the “Y2K” scare and others is just that – hogwash and balderdash to try and scare folks and (more likely then not) promote books, movies, etc that people will rush to buy and see. The only Truth re: the end of this earth and the creation of the New Earth is found in Scripture – the Word of God, especially in the Book of Revelation. Sadly, there will be many more that will follow the enemy and his minions, believing their lies, instead of the Truth from God……this was Prophesied over 2000 years ago and is now coming to fruition !!!

  89. “they” have created all this hype around 2012 in the same way they created the hype of Y2K. The Mayans knew of the significance of 2012, but it’s not the end of the world as “they” would want you to believe. 2012 signifies the end of our current age, the age of evil and ignorance and ushers in the new age, the age of wisdom. “they” think they’re going to win the ultimate battle, but “they” are sadly mistaken…

Christians are running like mad about it, trying to get every single soul into their religion. That’s what really bothers me the most. but, I seriously do not believe that the world will fall to pieces around december 21, 2012. The End Of Days. Oh, and btw, Ive seen a lot of those rediculous movies about the end times. In all of the publicity, it didn’t phaze me about it being the end. I would read ads on the equirer(sp?), and other mags about the end times. I would get so mad and frustrated about the article, and it made me mad that people would believe this kind of shit. It’s awful that people, especially the christian people would go so nuts about it. And yes, I do remember the Y2K shit. what a crock!

  109. I beleive it is highly possible but not definite, and I also beleive the movie 2012 will be based on the stupid theory, rather than the scientifically probable theory. If your saying to ignore 2012 as hype, simply like Y2K, that would be foolish. Y2K had no real evidence to support any of its theory. Also, one could argue that its more of a cycle of the calender, resetting and just going back to one, not ‘the end’, as I do not beleive there are any words on the calendar saying “Doomsday” or anything of the sort? Also,
“The idea that a planet-sized object could possibly collide with Earth in the near future is not supported by any scientific evidence and has been roundly rejected as pseudoscience by astronomers and planetary scientists.”

  113. Because there is no modern scientific evidence to suggest that the world will end in 2012, I have no reason to believe that it will. I give the Mayans a lot of credit for being quite advanced for their time, but over the last couple of hundred years science and technology have advanced exponentially. We are capable of knowing way more now than they were then. If they were able to predict the end of the world with the knowledge and technology of their time, we should also be able to do it now.

  114. There have been so many speculations about the end of the world. People always have something to say and appeal to others life, why not to forget about it and just live our life. A lot of us tought that 6-6-06 was going to be the end of the world and many specialist said that something was going to happen 9-9-09 and NOTHING happened. But if this time something does happen, what can we possibly do about it?. And answering your question, since theres nothing that can actually prove 100% surely that the world is going to end Dec. 21, 2012 , Im going to keep living my life just they way i am doing it now and the way i have planned but if anything, since now on im going to try to be more useful and take advantage of life and its opportunities.

  115. I don’t know whether it will happen or not i mean the film ‘knowing’ was going on about how the world will end on october 16th but it never did.
But for some reason this is more believeable as you said about that the Mayans were very good predictors and that thing about Pluto and Saturn is supposed to happen around that time which is a pretty scary accurate prediction.

So if the world is too end then we might as well make the most of it, go sky diving or bungee jumping, after all we only live once so make the most of it.

  125. This is a strange time when 3 different sources tell us that there will be disasters. The Bible says that no one will know the day or the hour. But it will happen, it says. Why the Mayan calendar ends in 2012? Anyone could guess, but something is going to happen soon. Did we not see the Philippines being attacked by one after another typhoons less than a week apart? Strange, and these were in the North and not in the South where they usually appear there. If we see much more pestilence as is predicted, then we better look at the Bible as it does predict this. 134. The Mayans never actually brought up a “doomsday”, the calendar we have just stops there in 2012. Or well actually it stops in the 2200′s, the 2012 date was a miscalculation as we learned last week.
Still, it doesn’t signify anything – the calendar in your agenda ends at december 31st, 2009, that doesn’t mean the world will end.

It’s a baseless hype people want to believe in, for the same reason they believe in apocalyptic religions, for the same reason they believed the current president could bring about a complete overhaul of a nation in a matter of weeks – people want radical change to the status quo and they want it yesterday, preferably without any effort on their part.

  144. there was no prophecy. They did have an advanced astrological knowledge, and calculated a calendar, very accurate and predicted astrological phenomena, and what date will coincide with what day of the week. They calculated it till 2012, and then stopped – they thought it was far enough. It’s like these modern calendars which tell you what date will be the first Saturday of November 2030, for example. They did it once, then they posted their calculation in their cathedrals and wrote it in their books. They did not mean it as the end of the world – just the end of their calculations. They thought that they calculated it far
enough to last their ancestors for centuries. They could go on, but did not see any sense in it. Do not forget, too, that their calculations then had to be transferred to stone and hand written books – a very hard long labour.
They just did not bother to calculate for even longer term – that is all. Now the commercial hype is trying to make something of nothing.
Anyone with an art degree will tell you this, if you bother to ask them.

  147. 1) I don’t listen to any such thing.

    2) So, of course I am not worried about. However, I am worried about those who get worried about it.

  150. Saturn and Pluto, idk – I read it’s about the alignment between our sun and the black hole in the center of our galaxy, which happens at much longer intervals.
Since modern astrnomers only announced it’s existence with any certainty on Sept. 5 of ’01, there hasn’t been lots of time to drum up much supportable theory about exactly what we can expect. THAT invites infinite speculation, so if we must, enjoy.

  154. No, there is no Mayan prophecy that says anything is going to happen on Dec 21 2012, that’s baloney put about because the calendar doesn’t go past that date. The calendar ends because of one thing: the people who made it didn’t make it last any longer.
It’s a nice idea and has peaked lots of interest but it’s just like saying what will happen when they land on the moon and find it’s made out of cheese. It’s not true.

  156. The Mayas chose 2012′s solstice as the end of the calendric era, much like the end of the Age of Pisces, or the beginning of the Age of Aquarius. *We* misinterpreted that (or just used it as the basis of a flight of fancy) to make a movie and a lot of hype. Do we really believe that all those horror flicks will come true? Flat-Earthers will believe anything – even that the end of a calendar era is the end of the world.

Ask this question again on December 22, 2012 (and see how many people believe that the world is ending and we just got the date wrong).

If the Mayans were still around and had computers, they’d be panicing to fix their Y2k12 bug.

Next major date incident, is the Y2k38 bug from the 32 bit Unix date format, and if you think a shade under 30 years is plenty of time, then think about 30 year mortgage calculations, pensions etc.

  185. I find it difficult to believe that the ancient Mayans would know of Plutos existence.

The theories that I’ve heard involve crossing the galactic equator which is referred to by the ancient Mayans as the Great Rift. However the suggestion that crossing the galactic equator causes gravity to reverse is ludicrous, it’s just that if you express the gravitational force between the Earth, Sun and the center of the Galaxy as a vector in a co-ordinate system with one axis perpendicular to the galactic plane and with the arbitrary zero point of that axis at the plane then that value goes from a positive value to a negative value but the magnitude remains the same so nothing actually reverses and it’s only people that don’t understand co-ordinate systems that think something reversed.

Also, there is no known ancient Mayan writings that state that the end of their calendar is associated with apocalyptic events, no mention of end of life just end of the calendar cycle. Almost all Mayan texts were destroyed by the Spaniards so we will never truly know how the ancient Mayans view the end of their calendar but I suspect it would be with some rather large celebration.

There is no evidence to suggest that the Mayans even believe it themselves

The following is taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar#2012_and_the_Long_Count

We [the archaeological community] have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end” in 2012. “For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle,”

To render December 21, 2012, as a doomsday event or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is “a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in.”

  197. That’s an interesting point you argue Richard. There is a lot more below the surface of this prediction than first appears however.

What the Mayan Calendar really talks about is the end of the current evolutionary phase of man. The calendar stopped because everything up to that point had occurred as predicted and beyond was no longer relevant as we enter into a new phase of man.

The 21st December 2012 date is the start of this new era. On this date the world won’t suddenly end for us all, this date is the first day when everything begins to change for us and in a very noticeable way.

Scientists and astronomers are in agreement that every 25,800 years the earth passes through a point in our solar system know as the galactic equator.

Furthermore, we align perfectly with the sun and the centre of our galaxy, known as the dark rift.

Now in the past 5 years astronomers have discovered there is a super black hole there, with an enormous pull of gravity.

When all of this is combined together, when Earth passes through the galactic equator and this gravitational pull the Earth axis are forced to shift by approximately 40 degrees.

History and geologists have proved this has happened in the past. The current north and south poles are just the latest poles, but many different points on the earth have been out polar caps in the past.

When the poles shift, the Earth undergoes major change. When the ice caps melt, the resultant affects will create a new surface on the planet. This in turn starts a chain reaction of global events, again backed up by evidence from the past.

Of all the dates to become most aware of is February 14th 2013. This is when Earth will be right at the centre of the galactic equator and the gravitational pull is so great as to stop the Earth rotation for 3 days.

Added into this equation of change is the super planet Nibiru, our lesser known 10th planet. This Jupiter sized giant has an orbit of 3,600 years and is already approaching to pass Earth again.

For those who star gaze, you may have noticed a bright new one appear in the southern sky. Over the next coming months this will grow larger until by 2013 will be so visible as to appear as a new moon in our sky.

With such a massive planet being in such close proximity to Earth by 2013, the gravitational influence on us will have a huge impact.

Our tiny moon guides our tidal flow with gravity, so you have an idea what the gravity from a planet the size of Jupiter can do for the oceans.

By 2014 much of this global change will have passed and we’ll be ‘out of the woods’ so to speak. Nibiru will have passed Earth and we will be well passed the galactic equator. And this is where the next evolution of man begins.

Having gone through global change, mass de-population of people and extinction of many of our plants and animals mankind is going to have a very different world to begin again from.

This is why the Mayan Calendar stopped as the world that was before just has no relevance to the world that was about to be created.

We can all fob this off as just another disaster story but unlike everything else, science can back up almost every part of this one with proof from the past and evidence from now, such as Nibiru.

Hopefully those that survive into this new world will create the world we should have today, one of love, harmony and peace. Unfortunately our world has become overrun by greedy evil men intent on total control over us all and they’ve done a dam good job with their lies, deceit and totalitarian control through the media. I for one welcome this new world that’s coming! I only hope I live to see it for myself.

For those who doubt this prediction of 2012, maybe you’re right. For those who believe it, I can really only say make sure to be on high ground around that time and make the best preparations ahead of these dates. Either way, our world is heading for major change over the next few years.

    Peace and love for life!

  212. Earth is billions of years old and will continue to exist in billions of years to come. During Earth’s life span; it changes daily and will continue to do so after we die. Just look at all of the islands that keep popping up in the oceans all of the time…due to earthquake activity. Ethopia has found a rift 35-miles long and up to 20 ft. wide in spots…..a new ocean is forming.
Therefore, 12/21/20012 is nothing but a bunch of pure B.S.

  217. I’ll admit, when I first heard about this ‘prophecy’, I was scared to death, and literally lied in my bed for days crying, as pathetic as that sounds. But after reading this, and other user’s comments, I now feel pretty safe, and able to brush it off and laugh. Thanks for bringing this up Richard. It’s made me feel SO much better.

As for what I would do if there was proof that it would happen..probably the same as another user stated–just doing what I’m doing now. What’s the point in spending thousands of dollars on an education for university if everything’s going to be lost in 3 years? Why not spend it on things like trips, to see the rest of the world, or go on some grand adventure? That’s what I would mostly likely do.

  220. This is just another cycle. We’re going to keep going through these apocalypse hypes until someone realizes that it’s not as bad as one would have thought it would be. It was the same as Y2K and 6/6/06 (Remember? Everyone thought the devil was going to “rise up”?) and it’s the same now. Even if you look at it through an astrological aspect, the energies of 2012 are supposed to be PHENOMINAL. It’s supposed to be a year of positive change or turning a new leaf, if you will. The hype behind the apocalypse theory is just by sensationalists and marketing that want us to buy their survival kits and training DVDs. How many of you still have your jumbo first-aid kits and non-perishible foods from the last apocalypse hype? I know I do!

  221. The Mayans didn’t know about Pluto. It was not discovered until the 1840′s, earliest. And then, it was only an educated guess based upon minute fluctuations in the orbit of Uranus.

Unless the Mayans had help from other worlders, there’s no great explanation for knowing of Pluto’s existence. That is a formidable problem with the author’s write-up.

  222. Do tell us how the Mayans knew about Pluto when it’s about 10,000 times too faint to be seen with the naked eye.
Why spoil things by lapsing into astrological bunkum about Jupiter and Pluto?
    The Mayans didn’t predict doomsday.
There is no particular astronomical event associated with that date except the solstice, a routine annual occurrence.

  228. How many times have we heard about prophecies telling us about the end of the world and nothing happened? It is not that the world is going to last forever (specially when humans keep wasting all the natural resources like there is nothing more important than our own comfort), but this prophecies have taught me that people can only speculate, but the only one who really knows when this world is going to end is God, and He doesn’t want to tell us whe this is going to be because He knows us, and He is fully aware of all the stupid things we would be capable of doing if we knew how much time we have until the end comes. That’s why we need to live each and everyday doing always our best, living like responsible and caring people who take good care of themselves and others around, and not like people who only breath and move without any good purpose.

It has been proven that if you go up to any Mayan not influenced by pop culture and living traditionally and ask them whats happening in Dec of 2012 they will have no clue what youre talking about. They don’t believe the world will end. I read one artical that said the closest thing to the end of the world that they predicted was some kind of crop wipe-out that has been taken wwaaaaay out of context in translation.

  235. Okay, I’m not saying I totally believe in this, but when you think about it, it’s a very scary thought. I feel that if so many people are hyped up about this, there has to be some signifigance. I was only five when Y2K happened…or didn’t happen..so I don’t really understand about that. But, if the world were to end, I’d rather just a bright light to occur rather than everything in all the movies. But, I do have full faith that only God and Jesus know when they are coming.

Also all the Christian teenagers who had to post something about lord or god, not forgetting to capitalize it. Yes, we all realize how you deal with those feelings, it’s as unimpressive and common as the Mayan’s way was. Not saying it’s wrong, just how easy it is to stimulate such an automatic response in any human person.

How about this prediction? In the future they’ll have an online community with mostly adults that wont have a Jr high – high school atmosphere. I always feel bad for Mike and the Hamster guy turning out a decently written article to have kids not even read it and post a bunch of junk under it.

  241. The main speculation is not of the pluto saturn thing. It’s of the earth lining up at the center of the milky way (which the mayans considered to be the underworld) which is amazing that they could pinpoint such a location seeing as you said they had no modern technology and that is really really far away (lightyears). Also at the same time the earth will make a wobble which it only does once every some (ridiculous like thousands i believe) odd number of years. The final speculation is of the mayan god that they worship kublah khan (spell check). He is depicted to have long blonde hair, fair skin, and blue eyes and a elongated skull (like as in alien elongated) (nothing like the mayan people or anyone in surrounding areas, mind you that this was far before white men came to the western peninsula. He was said to have come out of the sea from a society that suffered a similar end (atlantis anyone?).. Anyways I’m not investing to much into it but, we’ll just have to wait and see. haha

  243. I don’t think the world will end in 2012. IT is just the begining of a new calendar. In fact, theModern Day Mayas will probably be celebrating and partying.

If the end of the World really does occur in 2012, it will probably be because of the hysteria. People will go all crazy because they think the world will end. People will do whatever they want, and the world will turn upside down. THAT will be the end of teh world, hysteria-not because of some stupid astranomical crap. You know if you predict something eventually it will happen. I predict a plane crash in teh future. Everyone except 2 passengers die. Eventually that has got to happen right? And who is so sure that the Maya’s predictded the end of the world? And in 2012? People are crazy I swear.

  245. I like to think of it as predicting major shifts in time not so much the end of the world. For example the Aztec belief of Cortes was somehow connected to the myth of Quetzalcoatl which would bring their destruction. And in it did not bring the end of the world but it did end life as they new it. You could see 9/11 as a major shift as life will never be same again. There is also a Catholic prophecy that speaks of the last pope which oddly enough is the pope we are on right now and he is pretty old. I will laugh my butt off if he dies in 2012.

  250. Here’s my take on it. Every body just calm down. Those that created that calendar had the ability of REMOTE VIEWING. They could see that there was no need for anyone to have to consult with their art. By 2012 eneryone will either have a digital watch that has the date and time, could walk down a street and see a lighted sign with the date, time and temperature, or have a cell pphone with the time and date. Only those that live in the most remote outposts of this world that would not have such technology would not need it! No big problem guys, no big mystery.
Of course if that is true, they had a big laugh at our expense at how important they are now and freaked out we all became! What an amusing story that would have made around the ol campfire!.

I DO NOT BELIEVE IT WILL HAPPEN THAT DAY, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN ALOT OF SIGNS LIKE GLOBAL WARMING, HOW PEOPLE TREAT EACHOTHER, TSUNAMIS, THE LITTLE BOY WITH THE QURAN WRITING ON HIM… I MEAN THERES THINGS TO THINK ABOUT.

YOU CANT JUST “RESEARCH” THIS STUFF BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE JUST PUTTING THEIR OWN OPINIONS, IF THEY THINK IT WILL HAPPEN OR NOT, THERE IS NO ACTUAL PROOF!
I THINK THAT BY THIS RATE, HOW PEOPLE ARE FREAKING OUT, IMAGINE HOW IT WILL BE IN 2012. PEOPLE WILL BE DOING THOSE THINGS IN MOVIES…. DRIVING CRAZY, HIDING, ETC. MAYBE THATS THE ONLY THING WE WILL SEE THAT DAY, AND US HUMANS MIGHT BRING THIS UPON OURSELVES, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

WELL, NO MATTER WHAT YOU BELIEVE JUST REMEMBER THAT ONLY GOD KNOWS THIS DATE NOBODY ELSE, NO SCIENTIST OR ANYBODY, NOBODY CAN EVEN PREDICT IT.. SO DONT GO STRESSING YOUR SELF FOR 2 1/2 YEARS WHEN YOU DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN.
JUST BELIEVE WHATS IN YOUR HEART.

Anywayz it’s just that these mayans thought no one would make it that day so they stopped >:( I just know some land are going to be destroy because of the Ice Caps. 273. the very veryy first time i heard about it i was kinda freaked out, but that was only cuz i only had heard the evidence supporting it. like sooo many people have said, its just the end of a calender. at the end of each of our calendars do people freak out about ‘the end of the world’? no. why should it be any different for the mayan calender? and there have been countless other doomsdays predicted, and obviously none have come true. so no, i dont think its gonna be any different. but can you imagine what December 20, 2012 is gonna be like? x]
srryy but i think its gonna be entertaining to see whats gonna happen, and what people are gonna do.

also the Mayans DID NOT PREDICT THAT DAY TO BE THE END OF THE WORLD – duh. It is the end of a 5,125 year cycle. The Mayans predicted that the new cycle will have emphasis on “global “consciousness”. There is no doomsday prediction by the Mayans.

  278. If I’m right they didn’t necessarily predict that the world will end in 2012, they just stopped on December 21st, 2012, right? Did anybody ever think maybe they just got bored of carving it into stone? They made calendars for years and years ahead of their time. Maybe they figured that 2012 was good, and that they had went far enough for then.

However if it were true, I might be a bit more in-the-moment type of guy, but other than that, I wouldn’t really care. It’ll end someday.

  286. This is not true. Ive been recently to Guatemala, where there were once mayans. In 2012 the mayan calendar will end, and of course, I asked as everyone did if the world will end, if a meteorite would crash on earth etc, FAKE.
I was told, which is the real story is that the when the mayan calendar ends they predicted the start of a milenium with peace. That was what they predicted, not the end of the world, but a new age of peace and tranquility.

  292. Actually the Mayan Calendar goes like this:
0.0.0.0.0 and each of those 0′s go up to 20 then the next 0 starts at 1 and the behind one starts at 0 again.
so when it reaches 20.0.0.0.0 it will only reset itself and start all back at 0.0.0.0.0 again. that’s how the Mayan Calendar works. and Planet X is not Niburu and Planet X Is actually Pluto. And there is no objects heading towards earth. and No Solar flares or extreme climate Change if you calculate the weather with a lot of time on your hands like me. You will find out that absolutely nothing happens on 2012 December 21st. its just a NORMAL leap year and NOTHING ELSE. Almost every single leap year people try to scare people about the world ending, because they are idiots who don’t know what a leap year is.

  295. No, I am not worried about 12/21/12, and I’ve answered this a number of times in the History category. What the “prophecy” is is people interperting the reason why the Mayan calendar ends on that date as meaning they believed the world would end on that date. All truely good prophecies must be open to interpertation, but that interpertation usually occurs after an event has occured rather than before due to the fact that a wise prophet avoids being too specific.

In the 2000 edition of the Old Farmer’s Almanac was an article on how to become a prophet in six easy steps. These steps are:

    1. Predict the past – If something has happened in the past it’s likely it could happen again in the future.

    2. Avoid specifics – You want things to be vague so that the prediction must be interperted. By giving too many specifics you open yourself up to ridicule if your propecy is proven wrong.

    3. Predict the obvious – This is very much the same as one, though you don’t have to worry as much about the past. In other words, think of things that will likely happen, such as the moon rising or a race being won.

    4. Leave home – This doesn’t actually mean to leave your home, rather you should seem to be someone from far away who the folks around you don’t know. If you say you’re Bob from the corner of Maple and Mill Streets then the folks in your neighborhood aren’t going to be as likely to take the prophecy seriously. But if your the Seventh Ishtar from Sumeria you’re suddenly a bit more exotic (just as long as you’re not giving the prophecy in person to your neighbors, or if you are you claim it came from your alias)

    5. Leave yourself an out – This is a restatement of number two, though it may refer more often to date. Don’t be specific, you want to say “Hey, I never said the prophecy would come true today, it’s still waiting to be fulfilled.”

    6. Predict interesting stuff – Predict things people want to hear about. This is a know your audieance type of thing. If their not interested in politics or the economy but want to know who’s going to win the Oscar for best actor or actress, their less likely to pay attention to you if you predict something that pertains to politics or the economy.

What does any of this havce to do with 12/21/12? First off those claiming the Mayans predicted the end of the world are giving step 6, people want to know when the world will end. And it’s obvious that eventually the world will end, step 3. However, the broke steps 2 and 5, they gave too many specifics and they didn’t leave themselves an out. The specifics are that the world will end and the date it will occur. If that fails to happen they have opened themselves to ridicule.

Don’t forget the Y2K prophecy experts were making at the end of the ’90s. According to them, the modern world was going to come to a screeching halt and midnight on Janurary 1, 2000 due to computer tech being in just about every electronic device or power plant. This tech would read the date as the shut down code in the binary language so there was a rush to try and install the Y2K patch in as many computers as possible. Yet even then the experts predicted that less than a quarter of the world’s computer systems would have the patch in place by midnight on January 1st. Yet what happened? NOTHING. They gave us the exact date and exactly what would happen and yet we watched as midnight came to each time zone without the prophised crash ever occuring.

  315. 2012 is not a hoax. Roland Emmerich’s 2012 movie trailer pretty depicts what is to happen. The Maya were not the only ones who knew about 2012 as most of the world did until the 1800s. Washington DC was laid out to reflect 2012 as a reminder to visitors. Monuments carved in stone were left world wide as a warning to our generation about 2012. Christ taught it. Read my non-fiction 2012 trilogy, The Ark of Millions of Years, the most comprehensive 2012 books in the world that are based on scientific, historical, biblical, and Mayan facts. Available in Barnes & Noble bookstores and on line bookstores. I write under the pen of E. J. Clark. Read and prepare for time is short.

I personally do not think the world is going to end but at the same time I’m still a bit scared though, only because i watch the history channel a lot and they make it like this big thing, and it is kind of scary, however I don’t think it is going to end. No one knows or can predict when the world is going to end. And if it does? what can you do about it? I don’t think anything. You should have enjoyed your days here on Earth. 328. Here is my thing: Mayans don’t believe in Christ. Therefore, AD (or CE for the picky-politically-correct people) doesn’t exist. It’s quite possible THEIR 2012 already happened, hince why their entire society got wiped out.
Also through some digging I found out what the TRUE prediction is…What it means by the life cycle will end is meaning a new era, such as the bronze age iron age ice age blah blah blah. It has nothing to do with doomsday but even so, it still worries me becuase of my paranoia.
It bugs me though that chirstians say it will end and christ will come back. People, please don’t be stupid, I can’t stand stupid people. If you truly are a christian, read your bible, No man can predict the end.

But this movie, 2012 shouldn’t be allowed to even be mentioned mainly for the fact that its horrible for people like me with really bad paranoia. Movies like that freak me out and than I get obsessivly paranoid and start freaking out and I can’t eat or sleep right because I am worried. It’s funny how its offensive to gays to say “fag” or to autistic kids to say the phrase “thats retarded” but its okay to make movies that trip people with paranoia out. Not fair >:(

But to answer the question I want to spend my last few hours in the love of my life’s arms. And when I feel it ending, hold her tight, give her one last kiss and tell her I’ll never let her go.

  342. I don’t believe in the hype either. God ONLY knows when the world will end, and when it ends it will be a new beginning, up in heaven. Also, it will be when we least expect it. So really this 2012 stuff should just be dismissed. Also, it’s just a calender, don’t you think it would say something like End of World or something if it was “Doomsday”? Just some thoughts. Also, I am a Christen, so I believe in God and Jesus,
    God Bless. (:

The Lord will come yeah but he will come when no one knows hes coming. So I have nothing to worry about. But for all the people who don’t believe in God hes coming and when he finally comes you going to get it. So you better change your ways now.

  350. I am not worried at all, the mayan calendar is basically made by these wheels(not mobile though), and each wheel have litttle tablets that when aligned with other tablets from the other wheels, it gives a specific date. evenually all the combinations run out and it happens to end in our time. If it was the size of Alaska it would still end but just not during in our time period.

I think it’s hilarious when Christians are like “Oh, by the way I’m going to go to Heaven la la.” First of all, to say that aren’t you doing God’s job? You can’t really judge yourself, no matter how self-righteous you are. Secondly, you’re on yahoo answers. No one knows you and no one cares. 359. This is just a load of RUBBISH.
Think about it, for those who read the bible, you should already know that GOD is the ONLY person who knows when the world will end. YES, the mayans were OUTSTANDING with their true predictions, but this is one false prediction they’ll be making! I believe that, just as our calender, theirs start all over.

But for those who don’t read the bible – do a little research, eh? Honestly, we were supposed to die sometime in 1999..then in 2002..then on 6/6/06…And some other dates, too. Are we still alive? Maybe not those who were idiots and were suicidal on these dates – but I can see the world is just fine.

YES, we will all die someday. But just stop with all this nonsense, and live life as it is.

[However, if anything, when the world does end, i'll be in some hotel getting drunk, and laid, hoping my husband doesn't find out. Oh, well.]

There are a lot of theories to due with the date and so many ancient societies that have apocalyptic endings that occur in or around that date and not to mention from what I have read from a lot of different sites scientific evidence has seemed to have found a lot of things in space that could collide and destroy or wipe out all the things on earth coming at us in 2012. And for that matter….I’m freaking out at times.

  369. It’s true that there may be an apocalypse.

But what does the word “apocalypse” really mean?

Every one says that it means the end of the world. In reality, it means that one thing ends and another begins.

The Mayans were amazing matematicians– there is no doubt in my mind about that.

My one question- how did they not see the Spaniards coming to pretty much wipe them out? (no offense to Mayan descendents)

  370. The Myans did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012, that idate just falls on a round number in their system of counting that ended a complete cycle for them. They would have eventually caculated the next cycle, but Myan culture has been flat on its back gasping for breath for half a millinium. The calendar in my check book ends on December 31st 2011. I’m not worried about that either.

Comment posted on November 5th, 2009 at 5:12 pm by Rebekah Kennedy
  371. I reckon they just got interrupted before they could finish the calendar, possible by the Spanish invasion?? Or was that just the Aztecs? Anyway, either that or they just thought, f*** it, that’s far enough in the future, that’ll do it, and went back to contemplating mysteries and building strange pyramids.

I just don’t like people saying it’s stupid and dumb, because people are entitled to their own opinions and beliefs. But I can relate to the hype of 2012… No one can predict the future, we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s both scary and exciting, because you never know. I just think that disasters and the death toll are just going to have a surge that day. I hope it’s not the “apocalypse” because I really don’t want to die:( But the Mayans were extremely intelligent in their era. We should review the facts and clues, before we start making assumptions. We’ve made mistakes before. Us, humans, need to be more careful and focused. Let’s not jump to conclusions. Anyways, I’m excited to see the movie, 2012. It seems like a good thriller in the commercials. All in all, I’m not worried. I will just live my life:D

  392. Wow, I can’t believe this is actually posted here. How utterly irresponsible. The Mayans made no such prediction. It’s just a bunch of BS hype that ufologist made up when they got tired of aliens, and a bunch of viral marketting for a disaster porn movie. And what happens? “Educational” cable channels and Y!A keep peddling the BS.

Sure, for people with critical thinking skills, they just easily blow it off. But children don’t have those skills fully developed. Now I don’t like it when people boo-hoo “think of the children” for things that don’t really matter to the children. This isn’t one of those cases. Children are being traumatized, some even becoming suicidal. Now I know Y!A is for 13 year olds and older, but there are still 14 year olds who are panicking.

It’s absolutely disgusting that this pseudoscience is a Y!A blog post. It’s not just modern Mayans who disagree with the “interpretation”. Other inscriptions at the same site post-date 2012. All 2012 is is a significant anniversary of the creation of the world for them.

And, I’m sorry, a “squaring off of powerful forces beyond Pluto,” that’s mumbo-jumbo. What kind of phenomenon – to your understanding – is that?

  395. The Mayan Calendar has several months, weeks, and years of all different amounts of days. Each of the weeks, years, and months have one common denominator which happens to occur every 5000 years. So essentially December 2012 will mark a major astronomical event. weather or not it is a cataclysmic event is relatively unknown.

It sure got the sales of Generators boosted though, Why would repeat hurrying and rushing out to get some underground shelter or something else? I mean let’s get a grip to see that when the world ends it will. No one here can say WHEN that will be. I feel let’s see if anyone panics as if someone can do anything about it. Well?!

I do know that if it happens I am going to be majorly p.o.’d that I didn’t spend all that money I’ve been putting aside for retirement, didn’t quit my job so I could debauch myself one last time, etc. But didn’t they expect something to happen in 1984, then when the turn of the century happened, then in 2001? Let’s just not worry about it, and live the life we were meant to have instead of thinking about our death.

  412. No I am not worried about Dec. 21, 2012.
“Our” daily calendar ends every year on 31st of the December and then we make new one. Mayan calendar is just made until Dec 21, 2012 possibly because who ever thought of it (us humans) just never would imagine himself live as far as 2012 and wouldn’t even bother to make the calendar longer. Its just a way to track the days and number of year.

  414. This author Richard S is spreading the fear and gossip that our “life cycle will end on Dec 21, 2012″. The Mayans never predicted our lives would end on that date. Dec 21, 2012 will be the end of a cosmic cycle, get your facts straight. Just like Feb of this year marked the end of the Year of the Rat. Dec 21, 2012 will mark the end of a cycle. Every cycle represents a sort of cosmic entity, just like astrology.

This year is the year of the Boar, good things are supposed to happen for people born the year of the boar. Barack Obama was born the year of the boar. What happened to him this year? He became President of the United States and won the Nobel Peace Prize, pretty good year I’d say.

Dec 21, 2012 is not good or bad, it’s the beginning of a new cosmic cycle. Things will change during that cycle, just like things change during the year of the boar. It has to do with the way the planets are lined up (not squared off). When the stars are lined up just right either good or bad things can happen. At this time I think it’s safe to say that nothing really bad will happen in the immediate future.

Whether or not our society survives after Dec 21 will depend on our own decisions. Karma is the key word here. If we can be good people and do what we are supposed to do, good things will ensue. It’s fairly simple.

If we keep pecking away at the ozone, building bombs instead of families, giving into special interests, we’ll find ourselves back in the same situation as Sept 1939, looking at WW3. That would indeed be an apocalyptic scenario, one that few would survive as most nations nowadays have nukes. One bomb can wipe out a whole city. When people are destitute and desperate we’ve seen how things can go awry in a hurry (see buildup to WW2).

  415. Another end-of-the-world “prophecy”. The Dec. 21, 2012 date is just another date of astronomical significance, nothing more. In 2012, the winter solstice (Dec. 21) occurs at the moment of the conjunction of the Galactic Equator with the Milky Way. Just like the end of the world was to occur on May 5, 2000, when the planets aligned, supposedly to cause world-wide polar ice shifts, cataclismic earthquakes, and/or giant tidal waves.
As for arguing religiously, I won’t even go there… predestination, fatalism, determinism, calvinism, even infralapsarianism, can cause a whole different debate.

  416. It is interesting how most people just commented on 2012 and didn’t bother to answer the important question, what would you do if you only had 3 years to live. I think you wrote a great article. I would spend my last three years the way I am spending my life right now – spending time with family, trying to help people and living each day to the fullest.

  417. No, i am not worried at all. I’ll admit the Mayans were extremely intelligent. However, no human is more intelligent than God. Therefore, we should stop pretending like they were. Has anyone ever considered that maybe the Mayans just got tired of writing hundreds of years of calendars? To them, 2012 was thousands of years in the future. They were probably struck by irrelevancy just as they reached the end of 2012. The world will end when God says so, not when man says so. That day could very well be in 2012; however, the prophecies have not yet been completely fulfilled and probably won’t be for decades.

  418. The thing is, the Mayan Calendar DOES end on December 21, 2012 at 11PM, yes. At the same time, the Mayans also stated along with the calendar that when the calendar ends, it will be the end of one life cycle and the beginning of another. There is nothing being said about a disaster. BUT, along with that; God also said there will be an era of peaceful comings before the end of the world and could this beginning be the start of a peaceful era before a government follows the third (supposed)anti-christ? Food For Thought, but either way; I do not care when it ends because as long as you and I are together “up there” then I am happy!

  421. End of the world prophecy comes from the Christian bible and though most of the 500 prophecies have been filled there are a few left. Let me put you a little at ease. Most people focus on the negative since these times are to be harsh to say the least. What they don’t realize or state there is more prophecy after the end of the world. So it is not total destruction as most think for afterwords there is to be a thousand years of peace. Yes I am afraid but no i don’t believe the world is to end in 2012. The bible states no one knows, but my calculations are closer to 2040.

  426. There is absolutely no evidence of this happening.. Nibiru isnt even fact… If such a planet exists (people said you would be able to see this planet in broad daylight in 2008 which we cant) There would be evidence of its previous passing 3600 years ago..

It is said to have a huge gravitational pull and would have easily had some effect on the sourrounding planets right?!

There are hundreds and thousands of astronomers professional and amatuer there is no way this planet hid from all of them and was kept secret..

The up and coming movie has even made up a website to advertise this BS… if it actually had some truth to it they wouldnt need to do this would they?

The real issues in the world are global warming and economic crisis they have been provin by the smartest minds in the world.. If NASA and the like say something it is pretty backed up beacause remember they have a reputation to hold onto and they would not want to kill this with lies and propagander what they say is researched and researched and the facts are added and disputed and backed up with real evidence.. We all know the truth comes out in the end and if NASA wanted to lie or hide information it would eventually fall back on them and their reputation would be ruined and no one would listen to them ever again… And if they are wrong in details they are the first to admit it go back research again untill they either squash the accusation or prove that they themselves were wrong… Doesnt that show we can trust what we are told from them? Im sure no NASA scientist is going to hold back the truth ever not even for the govt…

I will never believe in these predictions i have a calender that ends Dec 31 2009 that doesnt predict we are all going to die.. I also only believe what i can find out for myself and there is a quote that states extraordinary claims demand extraordinary levels of evidence… this evidence is non existant…

We have all heard the claims before and after 2012 we will hear it all again just a big joke false claims and lies, the lying has only got better thats all.

There will always be a planet x as long as the lies continue…

  435. I didn’t read much of the other comments but if you were to post this blog I”m sure you’re obligated to read our responses. Hopefully you will read mine. I am a man of understanding and calculations.

Though I don’t have access to their historical and astronomy data, I can say that this is possibly a miscalculation and another being illogical sense. The Mayans may have been an intelligent race but I believe its not possible to calculate the end of the world.

I too was a little struck by fear but I realized alot. One thing is if they make a movie about 2012 (And I know Roland Emmerich is very known for fictional world ending films) then its rather of a captilistic attempt to boost the film industry’s cash flow up to “astronomical” numbers (inside joke).

Also the fact still remains that why NOW do we worry of something that’s fatal to our planet’s destruction less than 4 years down the road? Could we have calculated and studies this years down ahead let say in: 2002?

That’s something that I dismiss this eventful occurance as nothing but a hoax. I hope you can understand my view on this subject and maybe quell those fearful thoughts of losing your life and others.

If I am indeed wrong, I would simply just say I would try to live my life as much as I can with the ones who I love and places I forlong have wished to visit.

    Good luck on your endeavours.

Comment posted on November 6th, 2009 at 8:02 am by Coleman
  440. I don’t believe it because this idea that the Mayan calender predicts *doomsday* is actually a fallacy of Western origin. The Mayan calender simply enters the next cycle and nothing happens.

But I’m still open to the idea that something might happen because I’m not going to be foolish enough to say “it’s just impossible” – something that too many people including scientists do today. And considering that the universe is a very very strange place, I believe anything is possible.

So I am curious but not crippled with fear. I care about this but not worried.

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. And everyone needs to leave their g*d bibles at home because anyone with any sense does not buy into them. Believing the bible is like me picking up the Lord of The Rings and saying we all come from middle earth. Why doesn’t everyone worry about the real problems facing our world like hunger and pollution and global warming… Or do your bibles say to ignore science and just pray that all the damage we do to the earth will be mended by your fictitious god. emphasis on the lowercase g. 471. every century and every civilization has had its doomsday warnings. the most recent was of course the Y2K scare. Nothing notable has ever happened on any of these “doomsdays”

everyone is freaking out about the mayan calendar ending on Dec 21, 2012 and everyone thinks the world is going to end.

what no one seems to take into consideration is that the the mayans had to end it SOMEWHERE. They couldn’t have very well kept their (circular) calendar going forever and ever and ever. A circle, as we all know, has to come to an end somewhere.

What better way to end it that on a winter solstice? I doubt that the mayans genuinely knew that the winter solstice in 2012 would also be when the sun aligns with the galactic center. It’s either a coincidence or they were visited by some advanced alien life form.

Anyway, don’t fret people. Even if all the hype does turn out to be true, this is all the more reason for you to live your life to the fullest NOW. Do things you always wanted to do. And if nothing happens on that infamous day, then so what? Keep living every day as if it were your last.

How do we know there isn`t another mayan stone calender out there somewhere that we just havent found yet? maybe the one we havent found starts in 2013 and ends in 4012?
The use of the word “cycle” in the quote “the current life cycle” is proof that nothing is going to end. A cycle is continuous like a circle, if anything was really going to end they wouldnt have referred to it as a “cycle” they would have reffered to it as a line or some other thing.a line has a begining and an end, a cycle or circle has neither a begining nor an end.

  481. I think there will be an end of the world but it wont be of natural causes like they said it will be it will be of the human race’s causes.

  482. Well, the Mayan’s didn’t last until 2012, so their end of calender predictions are about as good as those programmers who anly allowed 2 digits for the year.

  483. What people don’t realize is that the Maya and their calendar are not what point to 2012 alone.
Beginning with the fact that the specific date 12/21/12 (11:11 PM universal time) is the beginning of the winter solstice its also the date which the sun, earth and center of our galaxy align. Nostradamus’ lost book found years ago has illustrations that point to this event as an important event just like the Maya, their calendar enters its last phase, although nothing specific (world will be destroyed).
Furthermore, its unknown whether the sun blocking our connection w/ the center of the galaxy will have any effect on earth. What also does point to around 2012 is the next sunspot cycle, with that coming the sun has many more and stronger solar flares than usual and with our earths magnetic field weakening near zero by 2012 we’ll be burnt off of earth in a flash.
There are numerous accounts that point to 2012 but I will go on my way now.

  484. The disaster predictions for 21 December 2012 are based on a prophecy that the Mayans didn’t actually make. The prophecy of something big was mostly invented by Jose Arguelles who claims to be the reincarnation of a priest who lived hundreds of years ago.

That was not scary enough to sell disaster supplies or tickets to high-CGI low-plot disaster flicks so the failed prophecy of global disaster from planet X in 2003 had to be dragged in.

All of this is about money, not science or even new age twaddle.

  486. I am a Californian, so 2012 does not worry me one bit — we’ve survived so many disasters already. For all we know, every nation on earth could be wiped-out EXCEPT California!

  487. Its movies like 2012 that fuel the interest in stupid things like this. Anyone taking a few minutes of their time to examine the Maya Long Count calender will see that it DOES NOT END in 2012, just completes a cycle

  490. I personally think the world is NOT goimg to end!
    here are my reasons.
    1. something was supposed to happen in 2000; nothing happened.
    2. The world was supposed to end in 2006; we are still here.
3 The Mayan calendar does end on Dec 12, 2012. However, it doesnt mean that the world is going to end. Maybe they all died out before they finished it. Or maybe they just said “hey we wont be here that long , so whats the point?”

    2012 is just a hoax.
and if something does happen, so be it!

  491. I dnt beleive that the date is correct, but I think that someday the world will end. And we are not helping it, we are just speeding up the process. We are the ones that are destroying our planet, and instead of doing something about it we are making up stories and excuses.

  494. On December 21, 2012. Nothing will happen really on us and on earth…

We and I DON’T ever believe the world will end on 12/21/2012. Doomsday Prophecies of 2012 are nothing but lies, fake and not true.

So search in Yahoo, Google or Bing about “No Apocalypse in 2012″, “No Doomsday in 2012″ and “Good News, The World Won’t End in 2012″ and that’s it!

So God will protect and save us.

  495. I was scared, but the truth is I don’t think the world will end on 12/21/2012 AT ALL. The thing about the Mayan calendar doesn’t have anything to do with the end of the world. NOTHING AT ALL. 12/21/2012 will just be an ordinary day as usual; people will still be going to work, school, social events, having fun, and the like. Remember the Y2K phenomenon? I’m sure everybody does. Pessimistic people and media outlets said the world would end, the global stock market would crash, and blah-blah-blah, but look what happened: life went on as usual.

Hollywood, ‘predictors,’ and other things have done an excellent job at scaring people to the point of believing something that’s highly unlikely to be true. So let’s just take a breath, relax, go outside for a walk or do things that we like, and think positive. It’s working for me.

    God bless us all.
