What fright night flick still gives you the chills?
I love a good scare. I get especially excited about a well-crafted horror film and, lucky for me, movie theaters and TV channels are teeming with them around this time of year. In recent weeks we’ve had a couple of great ones (both Zombieland and Paranormal Activity totally lived up to the hype, in my opinion) and a few duds (Pandorum and The Stepfather immediately come to mind), but the interesting thing about horror films is even when they’re bad, they can still be great fun, provided they deliver on a few scares.
My personal preference tends toward ghost stories and hauntings, but I’ll pretty much watch anything from vampires to zombies to slasher flicks. The only ones I avoid are those extreme torture films which seem to have found a large audience in recent years. The first Saw was good, but I kind of lost interest after that. I only made it about half-way through Hostel and there’s no way I’m watching The Audition.
In the spirit of Halloween, I thought I’d share a list of my top 5 horror movies (as well as a smattering of honorable mentions):
–The Haunting (1963) – This classic black & white film from 1963 is based on the Shirley Jackson novel “The Haunting of Hill House.” It was remade in 1999, but I think the original is much scarier. Like the current hit Paranormal Activity, The Haunting is light on special effects but still manages to scare the snot out of you. Creaking doors that breathe (literally), frighteningly loud noises, and a truly compelling story supply the chills in this one and it’s a great ride.
–Let the Right One In – Overshadowed by that “other” vampire film (you know, the one with the kids that sparkle), last year’s Let the Right One In passed under most people’s radar. This Swedish film, based on the book by John Ajvide Lindqvist, tells the story of the friendship between a down-trodden 12-year-old boy and the little vampire girl who lives next door. It’s beautiful and creepy and funny and sad, all at the same time. I understand they’re shooting an American version (why are people afraid of subtitles?), but I highly recommend the original.
–The Shining – Is there anything more frightening than Jack Nicholson chasing Shelley Duvall and that poor “redrum” kid around that spooky hotel? Stanley Kubrick’s seminal thriller based on the Stephen King novel is not only a great horror movie, it’s a great movie period.
–Poltergeist – I was 10 years old when Poltergeist came out in the theater. I begged my parents to take me, to which they reluctantly agreed. I’m sure they still regret that decision. I didn’t sleep for 2 months after seeing that film…neither did they.
–The Exorcist – This terrifying tale of demonic possession is hands down the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. It takes awhile to get going (almost nothing scary happens in the first hour or so), but the second half of the movie should not be watched alone. Loads of pea-green vomit, spinning heads and flying furniture, and a teenage girl having a very, VERY bad week–this is and will always be the grand-dame of horror movies, if you ask me.
–Honorable Mentions: The Birds, High Tension, Candyman, The Amityville Horror (the original, skip the Ryan Reynolds remake), Alien, Silence of the Lambs, and, more recently, Drag Me to Hell.
Now it’s your turn to share. Do you relish a good horror movie or would you rather hide behind your popcorn? What are your favorite horror movies and what is it about them (or the genre) that you love?

Exorcist was definitely the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. I LOVE zombie movies! I know they’re not very realistic but I just love them!
The original The Haunting is my all-time fave! My husband and daughter think I’m nuts – they love the Saw and Jeepers Creepers kind of movies, but for me, nothing beats that creepy old movie. My brother and sister and I would wait every year for that to rerun on TV (back in the old days before VCRs) and then we would get ready to be scared to death.
You have good taste. Though I have to tell you the book “The Shining and the book “Haunting of Hill House” both were far more effective than the movies. The movies were good. The books were masterpieces.Poltergeist was an awesome movie. To movies that were really scary were “See No Evil” an old 60’s or early seventies flick about a blind girl that discoves (by feel) that her family has been massacred and the killer is still in the house. Yikes. How come they haven’t re-made that one? “Duel” with Dennis Weaver being stalked on the highway by a big-rig. All you see is the guys boots. Speilbergs first movie. Check ‘em out!
Oh, I love horror movies!
My favourite one would be John Carpenter’s Halloween – I still remember screaming when I first saw it. Hey, it was a creepy night and my dad decided it would be funny to wear a mask and press his face up against the window during the chase-ish parts.
Last year I went all out and bought about 7 cheap horrors for Halloween… I couldn’t wait though and ended up watching them the day before. I might do that again this year
The original Trilogy of Terror. Especially the little cannibal.
Well… you can’t have a list like this without at least mentioning Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween… all of them classics. But, have you ever seen Session 9? That was one of the scariest movies that I’ve ever seen…
my favorite type of movies are scary movies. i have a few comedies but 99.5% of the movies I own are horror movies. None of hte scary movies I have seen ar too scary for me. However, the first time I ever saw the original Salem’s Lot, I was scared out of my pants (I think it was the timing on my part because my father had recently passed away). It took me about 6 years before I could watch that movie all the way through, adn the first time I did it it was during the day. Now I can watch any movie at any time of day or night.
I also like the AFTER DARK HORRORFESTS SERIES of movies. I own 3 of them and they are great : GRAVEDANCERS , UNREST, & WICKED LITTLE THINGS.
you should check them out.
Another good one to watch : PHANTASM
I never understood why people were scared of The Exorcist. I think it is quite comical, but I do prefer slasher flicks. Kudos on Let the Right One In –
–The Shining and Poltergeist
I agree with you on the shining. Jack Nicholson has the ability to be creepier than anyone out there. Se7en is also really good
My favorite Horror flick to date, the only one that has actually given me chills has to be “The Descent” If you havent seen it, check it out. Its about a group of female extreme sports enthusiasts who go spelunking in NC. The movie is even better if you watch it knowing nothing more than that.
Thanks for mentioning Candyman. I saw it when I was younger (about 11) and it remains the most frightening movie I’ve ever seen. Mirrors are just eerie in the dark. And that one scene where she’s in the institution and the only one that can see him? Yikes!
I rarely watch horror movies anymore – but when I do, I definately prefer the psychological thrillers over the disgusting and sadistic gore (ie. Saw series).
personally, movies don’t scare me at all. People were scared of the Excorcist, I just thought it was stupid. I love movies that are true, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Even though it didnt scare me, it sure was a “sitting on the edge of your seat movie” If you really want to be scared I would say watch all of the old “Halloweens” or the Freddy Krueger movies
“The Quartermass Xperiment”, a 1956 British sci-fi/horror flick in which an astronaut returns to earth infected with an alien spore that gradually turns him into a hideous amoeba-like monster. I’m an adult, yet watching this film alone one night, during one of the creepier scenes, I jumped at a noise. Not easily obtainable on DVD anymore, but you still might find it on VHS.
Because of Poltergeist, to this day I still cannot bring myself to let my foot or arm hang over the side of the bed because I just know that creepy killer clown is under my bed…..waiting.
Session 9 was definitely a creepy movie as was Event Horizon.
The Exoricist gave me some sleepless nights back in the day (although I heard when it was re-released a few years ago some modern kids laughed at it!).
But if you want to know fear, one word: ALIEN
Right away you might think ‘oh, that’s sci-fi, not Halloween’. However, consider: a group of people stuck with a pretty sizable & friggen scary monster which strikes at random, inside a darkened hulk of a ship. Did I forget to mention the junior version of the monster busting out of someone’s chest?? Heck, when they filmed the movie the actors weren’t told the thing was going to bust out of the actor’s chest so their reaction you see on film was their very real shock! And unlike in the immediate sequel, they didn’t have an armory of weapons to fight back with.
Hit the lights, watch the film, & try not to flinch when you hear noises in your abode!
Mark is right, the movie Session 9 is quite a horrifying movie that screws with your mind. Newer horror flicks I enjoy would definitely be Drag Me To Hell, Paranormal Activity [surprisingly], 30 Days of Night was pretty good but not exactly “horrifying”, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Ring. As for more classics definitely Nightmare on Elm St. Children of the Corn, Pumpkin Head, ROSEMARY’S BABY, the first Chucky movie scared the living sh*t out of me when I was young lol
Oh yeah The Decent was amazing too and how can I forget the Evil Dead movies?! They’re not exactly scary either but they’re a classic and I’m into all different kind of horror flicks. 28 Days Later was killer [no pun intended lol] I could probably keep adding onto this list but I’ll stop! lol
Ahhh, Maximum Overdrive! Not super scary but it definitely has its own twist to a scary movie. Been a favorite of mine since I was a little boy.
The first Alien movie, definitely (I was 7 when I first saw it). It was one of those rare movies where you didn’t see the thing and were still scared half to death. These days it seems, horror movies will give you a good start’, but not genuine fear — the kind that will give you nightmares. My other favorites are “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984), “Fantasm” (1979), “Hellraiser” (1987), “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978), “Halloween” (1978), “Friday the 13th” (1980) —- (yeah, classic horror – see a pattern?). The remakes are SO terrible!
What ever happened to the hair standing on the back of my neck-horror? I don’t much care for being startled to death. There’s a difference between being afraid and being startled. Horror movies today only have the start’ factor – nothing more. The last truly scary contemporary horror film I saw was The Haunting, 1999. That movie raised some neck hairs…now, I’m more unimpressed. There’s only so many Saw and Rob Zombie movies I can stand.
Phantasm still gives me chills. I recommend it to anyone who likes 70’s horror flicks!
I’d say the scariest movies were the excorcist halloween maybe even the shining too.
If you mute the movie, it isn’t so ’scary.’ The scariest thing I have seen has been push to Socialize the country. Unfortunately muting the TV has not seem to end that horror.
I love horror movies! I love the rush it gives and the way it sets your heart beating fast. A few movies that I find scary and love to watch are any version of “Amityville Horror”, “Pet Cemetary 1 & 2″, and “Candyman”. Even now sometimes I’ll be in the bathroom and in my head start going ‘candyman, candyman’ and then I freak out and leave.
There was one movie that I remember watching when I was around 6 or 7 and I cannot remember the name of but if any of you do please tell me. What I remember of it was there was an older man downstairs and he hears this thump upstairs so he goes up into a room and the window is open and all you see are these green eyes and it ends up being a vampire in a rocking chair and he kills the old man. There is another part where I believe they are in a morgue and the vampires come alive. I know it’s not much but I remember I didn’t sleep at ALL that night and for a few nights after.
“The Ring,” the US version by Gore Verbinski, lives in my dreams. Watch this only if you handle after-images well. Slasher pictures make me angry that people don’t defend themselves better; vampire movies usually have me looking admiringly at the vamps (ie Kate Beckinsale), but this movie actually worried me. The DVD has a section marked “Don’t watch this” – don’t.
Any movie with spiders in it… Arachniphobia – eight legged freaks – ice spiders… Spiders just creap me out.
But I love to watch em!
The Slasher films have always been my favorites, followed by Zombie flicks. It’s the sequals that kill me.The first Nightmare on Elm Street, the first Halloween, the first Friday the 13th,and the first Hellraiser are all time favorites. In every case they get worse with every sequal.Though I have to admit some of the remakes have been awesome. The new Halloween is the best of all the remakes, and is the perfect slasher flick as far as I’m concerned, the second new Halloween,Not so Much. Can’t forget the Sci-Fi Horror either though, the best being either Alien or Event Horizon,it’s a toss-up to me.
Carrie…
I’d have to say Texas Chainsaw is still my favorite after all these years. The original. Not the glossy remake.
I love a good suspense/thriller; ‘Play Misty For Me’ starring a VERY young Clint Eastwood, ‘Night Cries’, starring Susan Saint James and William Conrad, and ‘Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte’ are 3 that come to mind.
HOUSE OF A THOUSAND CORPSES!!…
I am scared of pet cemetary 1 when the woman is walking down the hall and she opens a bedroom door and the woman laying on the bed pops up and says “I’m coming to get you Rachel ” scared me and I never watched it again.
Darkness Falls (about the psychotic tooth fairy) scared the crap out of me! A- having a fear of what lurks in the dark anyway, and B- a twisted version of something beloved by kids everywhere… well, it just set me up for nightmares.
And yes, I know it’s not a scary movie, but the wolf from Never Ending Story scared the living crap out of me when I was a kid. I always thought I saw those eerie glowing green eyes in the dark… still gives me goosebumps, and I’m 24!
I always have and always will love Nightmare on Elm Street. The first one. Wickedly awesome. That, and The Exorcist are pretty much the only things that freak me out nowadays
One you may not have heard of is “Amusement”, trust me, you want to see it.
others I love are:
White Noise (1 and 2, 2 is scarier)
House on Haunted Hill (the second is a little cheesy)
The Unborn
Silent Hill (gotta love the dude with the giant sword)
Pulse (1 and 2)
One Missed Call
The Cell (again, the second one is very cheesy)
Classics like Halloween and Friday the 13th are the best. Candyman is also very scary. I actually like Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween, the first one that is…didn’t get to see the 2nd one but from what I’ve heard I’m not missing anything.
I love the movie The Eye with Jessica Alba. I recently watched Saw III and it scared the crap outta me.
The scariest movies imo would have to be The Evil Dead, and Dee Snider’s Strangeland. I saw The Evil Dead back when I was 10-11 years old, something like that, and to this day,I still get the chills remembering it.Great movie, and amazing gore for a much simpler time!!
Strangeland scares the hell outta me,even now, just because it could actually happen. Its a torture flick,so probably shouldnt be classified as true horror, but I figured I’d mention it since the “scare the hell outta me” factor is there.
Freddy Krueger and Chucky deserve mentioning too.I just love to hate and fear these evil creeps! =)
All that said, nothing tops the classics with Bela Lugosi,Lon Chaney Jr and Boris Karloff. There’s just something totally appealing about leaving the scares to one’s imagination!!
Texas Chainsw Massacre (old and remake) gives me the chills. My god that’s brutal. I know it’s not the real deal but it was inspired by some events that took place even if there wasn’t ever a “Leatherface.”
Oooooh, creepy.
What Lies Beneath and The Sixth Sense were the only movies I dared to watch. Both bone-chilling but exciting!
I am not a fan of horror, thrillers or suspenses films. I watched them to fit in with everyone else. I was the one with nightmares for some time after watching anything remotely creepy. Cujo had me scared of dogs for a while. I saw Carrie when I was about 6 or so scared the daylights out of me. As did Creep-Show the one from the early 1980. The music in Halloween scared me enough not to watch. Amityville Horror – no comment I still shake all these years later. Most Hitchcock films get to me the suspense can be too much. Psycho I took bathes in the early evening for years, scared of showers for a long time. Classics Dead Ringer, Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte and Whatever Happen to Baby Jane all with Bette Davis, keep me awake at night. I know I’m a big chicken, can’t help it. It took me years not to be scared of Gremlins LOL
Also, Last House On the Left and The Hills Have Eyes are both very DISTURBING and BRUTAL. I walked out of the theater during Last House On the Left. Rape scenes were just HORRIBLE and too graphic. Ruined it.
Also, if you liked “The Decent”, you will probably like the movie that came out before it called “The Cave”, now I haven’t seen The Decent, but The Cave is a great movie.
Others:
Halloween 2007
The Bone Collector
In the mouth of madness is a very eerie movie. Just messes with your head about what is real and not.
Event Horizon
The best scary movies are the ones that really could be happening. My favorites are the Rob Zombie s House of 1000 corpse, and Devils Rejects. I do alot of road trips and see alot of weird things not to mention the people you meet. there’s alot of weird people out there that will be doing things you will never know. Never know you want a scary movie, maybe you should film your neighbors. Na, but anyway my favs are the classics, Friday 13, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm St, Hellraiser, those are hard ones to top. they gave me nightmares as a kid, why my parents let me watch i’ll never know. maybe a sick sence of humor…..
I like the original Salem’s Lot and Amitiville Horror. There is something about leaving stuff to the imagination. I like movies better when the horror is not “in your face”, what you can imagine can be far scarier. The remakes take all that away. I like the older horror movies better than the modern ones with all the special effects.
If you like old movies, check out “The Uninvited” with Ray Milland (1944). Well done and an intersting watch for thsoe that like the old style movies
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is SO scary, even to this day. There’s practically NO blood in it, yet it’s genuinely scary. It doesn’t depend on gore and shock but is just disturbing through and through.
The Nightmare on Elm Street scares me out of my wits. I cannot stand to watch it because it gave me a lot of nightmares. I made myself watch every one of them just to tell myself it wasn’t fake.
Otherwise, I’m into Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Freddy Vs Jason, Dracula, Van Helsing.
Hmmmm you know Frailty scared me …as did Disturbia. All the classics mentioned here are good as well….as of late, I have been waiting for a really good spine tingler… An old Goldie Hawn flick called Deceived is pretty good, as well as the old Satanic’s from the 60’s – like Rosemarys Baby
Rear Window is a fun watch if you like the oldies as well as creepy cop movies like Under Suspicion with Christopher Reeves and Unlawful Entry with Ray Liotta and Kurt Russell
I could go on and on but think I have taken enough space up !!! I cant wait to read the replies to get some more good recomendations ! Deliverance is sickly scarey in a different way…ugh.
Rob Zombie movies!! AHHhhhhh…BOO!
Devils Rejects is the BEST!
I agree that The After Dark Horrorfest series is definitely worth checking out. There is this one named “Dark Floors” that keeps coming back to me…
When it comes to movies like “The Eye”(feat. Jessica Alba), “The Uninvited”, “The Ring”..etc., my opinion is that the original Asian makes are much, much better. Although The Ring remake was an exceptionally well made remake.
“Darkness” scared the crap out of me. So did “Amityville Horror”, “Exorcism of Emily Rose”, and “Rose Red”. The remake of “The Exorcism” titled “The Exorcism: The Begining” scared the shit out of me. I really want to watch the original “Exorcism”, but I’m still working up my nerves for it…haha.
“Let the Right One In” is on my list to watch. I’m surprised that so many have mentioned “Drag me to Hell”, perhaps I will check it out.
Poltergeist is definitely a classic – the pool scene and the tree are stand out moments to me, and who can forget the little girl’s voice…”They’re heeeeeere”. Creeptastic.
The Shining was more mentally taxing and creepy. That kid was terrifying. And Jack Nicholson was a total horror.
The Children of the Corn was the movie that most traumatized me as a child. I was completely horrified by that movie for years. I recently caught part of it on the SciFi channel and it wasn’t nearly as frightening watching it as an adult, but it will always remain a fave for me.
Lastly, I’m a huge fan of The Lostboys. Not exactly a horror film, but it’s scary enough and definitely great in it’s own right.
I love this time of year!
Event Horizon was one of the most freaky movies I have ever seen. You want a movie that messes with your mind, this is it.
I can’t leave without mentioning Pyscho. Showers at night when there’s no one else in the house will never not feel creepy after watching that movie. Norman Bates has got to be one of the creepiest dudes ever.
And speaking of psycho, what about American Psycho? While it’s not scary, it’s definitely a cult classic. Patrick Bateman’s sick, obsessive-compulsive, neurotic and methodical way of killing people almost makes you question some people you may know…
The Ring is the most frightening for me to watch.
It has to be Alfred Hitchcocks Pyshco and all the above named movies Tracey mentioned. Those that mimic real life can only earn the name true horror.
Oh, puh-leeeeze! None of those idotic slasher flicks could ever compare with the elegant-yet-terrifying “The Changeling” with George C. Scott. I’m not easily frightened — especially by cheap “bloody” tactics in movies, but this one was subtle and intelligent enough to keep even ME awake all night.
The scene where they can hear the ghost child’s faint voice on the tape recording of the medium’s session is phenomenal.
Drag me to hell was dumb as hell…im a wuss when it comes to anything that might scare me, simple as someone just walking up behind me, and i laughed through that movie.
I like The Innocents, based on The Turn Of The Screw by Henry James. Creeeeepy.
Silence of the Lambs isn’t a horror movie, it’s a psychological thriller.
The Birds scares the crap out of me every single time.
I lprefer the creepy, eery, sleep with the lights on kind of movie over the blood & guts type.
I LOVED Cujo. Because it was something that could actually happen, and being a mother I could understand how terrifying it would be to find yourself in the position of protecting your child against being eaten alive.
There is a very old movie called “The Changeling” starring George C. Scott. It was so creepy with the ghostly voices and the rubber ball that kept coming back. And Pet Semetary…I can still hear that evil little laugh of Gage when he told his Dad, “now I wanna play with yooouuu”
The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Dawn of the Dead terrified me when I was younger.
I ‘d say but just to tell about it I probably wouldn’t sleep for days. I have way too active an imagination I feel. lol
I don’t know the name, but I saw a preview of the movie. I must’ve been 6. All I remember is some girl lying on her bed, some dude gets on top of her and sqeezes her, she screams, then she says “He RAPED me! He tried to kill me!”
And as a P.S. The flying monkeys and wicked witch from “The Wizard of Oz” gave me serious nighmares as a child. LOL
Parnormal Activity really got me bad people say after you watch the movie you get nightmares i went to go see it last friday so i had to go sleep in my dads room holding my stuffed animal i thought the ending was bs though.
OMG I just couldn’t help but post up the movie “Splinter” and “The Ruins.” They were so disgusting, but yet so good!! Be sure to watch them^^!
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is just too scary and macabre for me. The idea of ex butchers going into business for themselves using humans instead of the usual cattle, hogs and chickens is over the top. Maybe it’s because it was based on a true story.
Bar-B-Que anyone?
Asia is the place to look to for original horror these days. Some of the better movies have been made into crappy American remakes such as Ringu (the Ring), Ju-On (the Grudge) and Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call). I’m waiting for Old Boy to be just destroyed at the hands of todays writers, directors and actors. But nothing can replace my favorite horror movies! Phantasm, Susperia, The Exorcist (the scarriest thing about the movie? The old MRI’s, eeww), Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead movies, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Skeleton Key, Salem’s Lot and Session 9. And although it’s not a scary movie, I’m not intothe Halloween spirit until I’ve seen Beetlejuice ( I’ve seen the Exorcist 167 times and keeps getting better every single time I see it!) Boo y’all!!
“28 Days Later”, a British indie that was incredibly well made, but still gives me nightmares years later. Biological weapon research gets loose. Zombies ensue.
Hopefully I don’t repeat too many, but just a few come to mind that are actually frightening and/or good chillers:
1. Dead Silence (it’s just creepy)
2. Psycho (the original)
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street (only the first)
4. Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (not scary, but it’s one of the gooiest gore film I’ve seen)
5. The Strangers
6. Friday the 13th (I think they’re just goofy fun)
7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original, the remake was a little bit scary)
8. Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (it’s a thriller, really)
9. Behing the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (a retrospective documentary on becoming a serial killer)
10. Silence of the Lambs
11. Creature From the Black Lagoon
12. Cry_Wolf (it’s an okay way to spend an hour and a half)
13. The Hitcher (the original)
14. The Descent
15. The Grudge: Unrated Extended Director’s Cut
16. John Carpenter’s Halloween
17. The Orphanage
18. Hard Candy
19. Hannah Montana The Movie (ha ha ha!!)
That’s all of the movies I can think of right now.
However, definitely do NOT watch these:
1. Darkness
2. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (what the #@%&!!!)
3. When A Stranger Calls
4. An American Haunting
5. Knock Knock
6. Hatchet
7. My Bloody Valentine (the remake)
8. Turistas
9. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (the original sequel)
10. Slither
11. FearDotCom (it’s a pile of &*%$)
12. Doomsday
So there’s some dos and donts for ya.
Definitely for me any exorcism movie…….or Amityville.
Steven king movies do it for me. a little old fashion, but thats me.
Hey Amber. I believe the movie you are talking about with the green eyes that ended up being a vampire in a rocking chair and then the vampires in the morgue waking up sounds like the original Salem’s Lot. I remember watching that movie for the first time about 2 or 3 months after my father died. It was on t.v. (and you know Stephen King movies on tv – 4 hours long due to commercial.) I could not get past the scene where the one boy is laying in bed and his dead friend comes and floats in front of the window trying to get in. It scared the crap out of me.
Okay guys, I am so ashamed – with all the great horror movies that have recently come out in the past few years, though you have remembered a few of the classic flicks, I have not seen one person mention “IT” by Stephen King. Personally, his movies freak me out more than anything – the Shining, as someone stated earlier, outstanding Jack, bravo – your role in this movie has caused 10% of the nightmares throughout my life!! LOL – I mean, but “IT”, I saw that movie for the first time when I was 9, I’m 25 now and STILL have this dream where go to get in my bed, hear a thump under and when I look over the edge his face pops from under my bed…then I take off running out of my room, trip over a few things, down the stairs I go, and then out the front door – next thing I know, Im running through what seems like a sheet party – close lines full of sheets…. and thank god I never make it past that, but I dred the day I do – because I will probably have a massive heart attack and die in my sleep!! LOL anyways, “The Stand” was a very good flick as well, it was freaky to me. “Langaliers”, Tommy Knockers, Rose Red, Sleepwalkers – let’s not forget to mention his recent movie “The Mist” OMG – at the ending… if you want a night of horror, and I don’t mean shrieking horror, I mean the bone chilling, OMG, erie feeling horror, just rent a bunch of Stephen king movies LOL…one other movie I find bizzar, was “The Happening”…very freaky – but anyways, lol after all the horror movie talk, I think I’ll be up for quite awhile…brings back so many freaky night memories!!! LOL
I think that the scariest movie would have to be Darkness Falls. Just look up the movie poster on Google Images. It’s pretty creepy. I’m ashamed to say that for a long time I had to sleep with the night light on and I still need noise while I sleep. Seriously the scariest movie I’ve seen.
i think the movie it is pretty creepy or salems lot not real new but creepy also the one with the little boy who gets killed by a dirtbike playing and the pumkin guy comes after the dudes who hit the kid i forget if that was halloween also pet cemetery is pretty scary at times all good classics theres on blk n white one i remeber seenin once i think its caled night of the living dead where the zombies come out of the stairs that was a good one.
paranormal activity was so scary!!!!! good movie to come out durring the month of chills!
Island of Terror. monsters trap some English twits on an island and suck the marrow out of their bones one by one. Starring Christopher Lee.
I call them twits because there are no guns on the island for some stupid reason, so the humans are defenseless against the turtle-shaped monsters with long tongues.
Though the special effects are primitive, I recently saw the movie again on youtube.com and it stands the test of time. Still creepy.
I think you may be talking about “Audition” (Odishon). Don’t worry, you have to wait til the end to get the reward….There’s really no gore before that.
I’ve already watch The Poltergeist, The Shining and The Exorcist within the past 2 weeks. I love them all, but you can’t beat Asian ghost stories; not for me atleast.
I still enjoy Friday the 13th!! Classic!
Also, all the Tales From The Crypt shows!
Oh, Also, Halloween!
Child’s Play gave me nightmares for about a year. My cousin left her my size doll in my room and the thing just stared at me. I’m not a fan of movies where the person/creature rolls out of sight and appears from under beds or behind car seats. It makes me shudder to even think about it.
Freddy Kreuger really scared me when I was a little girl. Now though, I would have to say Japanese horror scares me for some reason, while American horror is less scary. Juon 2 really scared me!
Honestly, anything that is coming out these days and that is rated R looks pretty scary, but one of my family’s all time favorites is Beetlejuice, although it is pretty corny
To Tracey and Mindi, among others….I too think that the original scarey guys….like Borris Karloff, Lon Cheney, and Bela Lugosi made the really good horror films. As for the Exorcist, how seriously can even a kid take green vomit, heads spinning, people floating? I would think that most of us are a little too sophisticated for that silly drivel.
Now, Rod Serling could crank out an original thriller episode like nobody else. Didn’t he actually invent the idea of “Chuckie” the flipped-out doll that comes strutting out of somebody’s fireplace?
A couple weeks ago, I seen a thriller. It’s about the end of the world. But in this one, the world is acually be saved from going to the core of it, and explode some of it. It’s not a horror movie, but it sure gives the chills! The movie is called “The Core”! If you are allowed to hear the “F” word this movie is good! If you think it’s not scary at all, this is a 13 year old boy wrighting this!
i like the movie Boo around Halloween time. it doesnt really scare me, but im not scared easily movies are just too predictable for that anymore. heres the trailer. this may not be a movie for you but its worth watching at least once http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eICZMAmD80Q
I’m going to have to say Pyscho, and the Omen.
28 Weeks Later : made my heart skip a beat
Cinderella : Asian horror you will be shocked!
Donnie Darko : not horror but wickedly twisted
American Psycho: personal fav, extremely graphic
Popcorn : good horror movie, not that scary
Deliverance: there is a reason it’s a classic
I have only seen this film ONCE in my life. Once was enough. Almost 30 yrs later I can still see it in my mind… and it STILL disturbs me.
Lucio Fulci’s “The Gates of Hell”, a gory, gagging, gruesome, downright horrifying zombies, little kids, priests hanging themselves in grave yards, intestines being regurgitated – yes, I said they were puking the intestines they had eaten, save the world kind of stuff.
And at the end … the very last seconds of the movie … something else happens … and leaves its audience saying, “Oh **** no! No ******* way! I refuse to watch anymore of these ******* movies with you people!” (I went ahead & added the stars myself).
Film maker Lucio Fulci is as seriously disturbed an individual as Stephan King and if you are a horror fan, you need to check out his work. I HEAR he’s very good because I ain’t watchin’ anymore of the creepy stuff.
Wolf Creek wins hands down for me. Creeeeepy *shudder*
I can’t live without a little horror everynow and then.
Now I have to admit the movie that kept me awake for weeks was definitely “The exorcism of Emily Rose”. I had a friend of mine that was creeped out by the latest “Quarantine”, lame =D. “Paranormal activity” sounds awesome, too bad it’s only in the U.S. Egypt got a share of about 1000 of the demands online. Why can’t they play it there ?
All time for me was “The Entity” starring Barbara Hershy.Talk about spokville, still gives me the gemmies1
I dont know why anyone hasnt mentioned this yet; but the Blair Witch Project scared the crap outta me. I think it was mostly because most of the movie is left to your imagination..
OH and the movie WHITE NOISE is freaking scary. I would NEVER watch it again, it scared me that much.
I tend to prefer some of the classics, too. Polgergeist, Exorcist, original Omen, Shining are among my favorites. Nightmare on Elm Street always creeped me out as a kid and I can still remember the two little girls skipping rope singing
one, two Freddies coming for you
three, four You better lock your door
five, six Crab your crucifix
seven, eight Stay up late
nine, ten Never sleep again
Oh, but one that hasn’t been mentioned yet. Stephen King’s IT. Clowns have always freaked me out, and I haven’t even tried to watch the movie since I’ve grown up to see if it’s as scary as I remember.
The blair which project is freakin terrifying. Not really sort of zombie, blood etc scary but it’s just so realistic and believable.
One of my favorites is 28 days later, I think its one of the best “night of the living dead” type movies out there, at least it gave me the feeling that what was happening was real, unlike some of the others filled with goofy characters that you just knew were going to get their faces eaten off cause they had it coming to them.
I like funny horror movies like Nightmare on Elm Street. I found Friday the 13th boring. I must agree with you on Portegiest because the first one scared me so much, I never saw another one and I was slightly younger than you. Saying that, I’ve only seen glimpse of the Exoricist and I don’t know what I was thinking when I saw Hellraiser because that is creepy too. I would like to watch the Halloween movies again as I don’t remember thing. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is scary. Night of the Living dead and The blob are funny scary. I don’t watch scary movies at theatres because they make it colder in there to make you more afraid.
why do people seem to think the texaas chainsaw masacre was real? it was based on a man called ed gein and the only slight truth about the texas chainsaw masacre is the face mask….. pyscho is also based on ed gein and i love that movie, the original one anyway. But my top 5 horrors are; poltergeist, event horizon, halloween old and new remake (the olds a good film and the news just disturbing) pyscho and the amityville horror
Wow. They made another vampire movie? I’ve never heard of it. But now that you told me about it, I will GLADLY watch it instead of Twilight…
I mean, seriously? SPARKLING vampires? *mumbles rant* I never watched any horror films, since I’m sort of a wimp when it comes to that. But I have seen The Amityville Horror and some alligator movie [that gave me the creeps] nothing else.
Out of all the horror films I’ve seen, I still think The Fog is one of the scariest!
Carrie definitely scared the heck out of me and still does to this day. Her mother especially gives me the creeps!
Pet Sematary is another one that keeps me awake at night haha
Child’s Play is still pretty scary…kinda depressing how they made such a joke out of Chucky with the newer ones.
House Of Wax with Vincent Price is one the best ^_^
Jaws….i hate sharks lol
That’s you and me both, my good man. Would you believe that I didn’t sleep for one night because I watched “The Ring” and another night because I watched “One Missed Call”?
Really, those two movies just give me the creeps. I mean, how could I sleep with a TV in front of me and my phone beside me. I had to turn the TV around just so I could get some sleep. Guess what? It didn’t work. So I tried reading a good, humorous, chick-lit book. It didn’t work too. Because I was so anxious of the things around me. I thought that my phone would suddenly ring. It did. I screamed so loud that I thought I heard dogs howling. Turned out it was my best friend, inviting me over for a drink. How can I refuse? Maybe I should’ve suggested a sleepover instead…
Ring, Child’s Play (Chuckie) and Salem’s Lot.
These movies scared me the most.
Some of my favs are The Descent, if you watch it make sure you do so with surround sound! It’ll scare the crap out of u…lol. Also Night of the Living Dead (the original)…Halloween (original) and Friday the 13th (original) both scared me and House of 1000 Corpses was so scary that I had to sleep with the lights on. After seeing that movie I looked outside and saw my neighbor’s headlights on with no movement inside the car. It was around midnight…I told my husband to go check on her and make sure she was alright. I was so freaked out. Halloween is my fav holiday and I absolutely love horror flicks.
I like the horror movies that mess with your mind. Personally, I’m a fan of “The Blair Witch Project”.
The scariest movie I’ve seen,by far, was the original “The Ring” (”Ringu”) in Japanese. The premise was simple. It kept audiences in the dark, wrapped in silence and mystery. Showing any abnormal activity was very subtle, as if you’re not even sure that you saw it. It is fear of the unknown. It did not have any vulgar orchestra ruining the mood. In reality, if you were in a dark room, all alone, you won’t have any music running in the background. That’s exactly how scary it feels like to watch this movie.
Salem’s Lot
I have no idea why, but I seem to be the only person in the world that was genuinely scared of “Dawn of the Dead”. I have no idea why it scared me so much. The Exorcist remains King in scary movies for me. Ones worth mentioning- Halloween, Carrie, Saw ONE, and Phantasm
Two movies from the 1970’s still give me the creeps, “The Exorcist” and “Phantasm”!
Alien
I don’t care what anyone thinks, but The Blair Witch still scares the crap out of me.
The Exorcist… I saw it in the theater when it first came out and didn’t sleep at all that night. I still can’t watch it. *shudders*
These are some freaky movies my dad made me watch when I was 10-14.
The Ring-What’s freakier than seeing a dead girl who got drowned in a well, you watching a tape, phone rings, “you’re going to die in seven days” in a creepy voice, seven day’s later at 10:00 PM, a tv you’re by turns on, she pops out of it, and just kills you.
Now that movie, I seen Recently, and I’m 14.
When I saw that, I was too afraid to even stare at a t.v longer than 2 seconds.
Still kinda freaks me out.
The Shining-Classic thriller.
Jack Nicholson plays a physco kill GREATLY.
This little kid talks to his finger, and he has some special powers.
And the wife, is just whiney and annoying, but an important part of the film.
Greattt movie.
The Exorcist- It moved slowly, but got a bit scarier.
I don’t think it was all that scary, but it was disturbing and disgusting. I thought it was stupid.
But for some reason, after the movie I’m like “Woah, wtf?”
Soo… Great classic movies.
I also liked Disturbia!
How could you forget Skeleton Key. That movie scared the scary out of me. To make matters worse a mate of mine knocked on our dorm window at 2.00 a.m that night howling ’skeleton key’ let’s just say that even the blanket’s couldn’t help with the chill I was hosting
The hills have eyes ! and 2 – from some time in 2000 – what a shocker OMG. I would advise all to watch these two.
My faves?
-The Changeling (1979) – a top-notch ghost story starring George C. Scott
-The Haunting & Let the Right One In are up there with you
-any of the Val Lewton RKO chillers from the 40’s: Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie, The Seventh Victim, The Body Snatcher, Bedlam, Isle of the Dead,
Curse of the Cat People, The Leopard Man, Ghost Ship…
-The Uninvited (1944) – often overlooked, classic ghost & haunting story starring Ray Milland
-Nightmare on Elm Street – the first and original, mixing dreams and waking terror unexpectedly
-Halloween – again, the original first–captures the Halloween spookiness as well as the terror of the boogieman, mixes well and serves up a chiller!
I thought John Carpenter’s version of “The Thing” was probably the scariest. I love Stephen King’s books but the only movie I really liked was his remake of The Shining (the one without Jack Nicholson) where he put back in parts of his book that didn’t make it to the original movie.
I’m surprised no one here has mentioned any David Lynch films. some of his movies are like super bad dreams – especially “Fire Walk With Me”.
I love all the movies you mentioned; allthough i would have to say that i also love the SAW movies; they are best! I love gore and bloody stuff; oh by the way AMC on cable or Dish, (whatever you own) will be airing old horror flicks starting today Oct. 23; you know some of the good ol movies you mentioned above! Wow and i would have to say that “Night of the living dead” the original one, (the first one ever made, back in the 60s) was one of the scariest ever!! Oh and might i forget not to mention that in my opinion the scary movies that are based on a true story are definitetly the scariest because you know they happened; so the thought of them been real is creepy beyond thought!
I hated C.H.U.D. more known as Canibbalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers to this day I cannot walk past a man hole or drainage system…creepy!
The original When A Stranger Calls frm 1979 is horrifying; if you’ve ever been a babysitter or hired a babysitter OMFG chills
Ah ah… I watched Poltergeist when I was really small – my parents managed to get it for my two older brothers and sister – and we were horrifighted! I must admit I haven’t slept in the last 5 years. One day my brother crept under my bed and grabbed my leg… I screamed and cried so much that the neighbours went to check what hapenned.
ah ah lol
The one movie that will always spook me no matter how many times I watch it is Halloween 1978. Classic without all the gore.
Oh, forgot one – Wolf Creek. It’s Australian.
Altered States was not a horror movie, but creepy nonetheless.
80’s baby here. The Freddie and Jason movies never really bothered me as a kid. One that really scared the hell out of me for some reason was PumkinHead. Still kind of creeps me out.
Not really a horror movie but “Arachnaphobia” really creeped me out. I hate spiders!
hellraiser.
Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn! It is a slow start like most 60s movies, but sooooo good and scary. Turn out the lights and tell scary stories right before. It will get you hooked.
No, No, No… Stephen King’s The Shining starring Steven Weber from “Wing’s” was just not scary at all!! While I’ll admit that it followed King’s book much more than the Jack Nicholson movie… it just didn’t have any real “Bang” for the buck. I understand that everyone has their own favorites… and that’s just fine, but that version of “The Shining” didn’t cut it!!
The one film I can’t watch (I’m 39) is ‘American Werewolve’ – the only explanation I can think of is that the moorland scenes were filmed in Wales and and that time I lived a couple of miles from Llyn Brenig in North Wales, right on the moors, scared the hell out of me. Recently watched the Exorcist, thought it was OK, made the mistake of watching a ‘Making of..’ before hand so took the edge off it.
…also ‘Zombie Flesh Eaters’, jeez, I only got as far as the yacht entering NY (?) that was enough for me.
i dont really watch horror films but i ve beendying to see the eye and the orphan…<3
-kaitlyn-
3 years ago I watched Saw I and the story line and ending took me by surprise which made me love the movie. It’s a little too twisted in the head for me, but I love how the writer makes you have to watch every minute to understand it. They keep making new ones every year and they get better and better. It’s not like the Halloween movies where you know Mike Myers is going to be alive again ready to kill. Saw is definitely unpredictable. I can’t wait to see Saw VI this weekend!!
The Changeling. Brilliant horror and one of the few to actually give me genuine chills. The camera work and editing is so spot on, every shot has a sense of dread built into it, a feeling that something scary’s going to pop out any second.
Definitely THE HOWLING … Werewolves at their finest.. I’m not a horror movie buff anymore. Always was less than scared, but I enjoyed this one. It was probably the first film to have the morphing into the monster effects.. Right around the same time as AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON .. (Another recommendation there..) Both are cool, but I wouldn’t be looking for academy awards for acting..
Speaking of special effects: F-X was really suspenseful and scary..
Midnight Meat Train-
Try taking Baltimore Metro at night. You will see what I mean….
Darkness Falls scared me, It was about the tooth fairy. The face of hers gave me many sleepless nights.
Jurassic Park scared me when I was a little kid. I could never watch the whole thing yet I could easily watch Interview with the Vampire.
In my opinion, monsters/creatures are scarier than people. People can only do a limited amount of things and most of which we already know. But monsters are a mystery and that’s what makes them terrifying.
Well I liked Rear Window, even though there’s no graphic stuff in it. It’s more like, watch out cause there’s stuff you didn’t know about RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!!!!! My mom liked Exorcist and the Halloween movies, but I’ve never seen them, cuz she says I’m too young.=D
What is Carrie about? You people keep mentioning it, and I have never heard of it. So, what is it like, and -hee hee- what is it rated?
Yep, Poltergeist will do it. But, even though Poltergeist was a much better film, when Kane walks up the driveway in the 2nd film, it creeps me out. I grew up obsessed with all three of those films.
The shining is a great one. Pet Sematary is kind of creepy too. Saw bothered me… ugh, what a terrifying thought that movie was. Plus, the end REALLLY creeped me out. Another one is Dead End, made a few years ago. Ugh. I rented Saw and Dead End off cable one night, and man did they make me jump.
Much Thanks to the person who mentioned “Island of Terror”. I think I was about 9 the first time I saw it and it was old then. Twits, yes but it scared the bejeebers out of this 9 year old. I was glad to see so many mention “Event Horizon”, which fulfilled both my preferences: Horror and Science Fiction. Was rather disappointed that no one mentioned two of my absolute favorites. Day Of The Triffids, (( OK, it’s a very old one, but at the time of it’s release, it was the most frightening thing) The other favorite, like “Island Of Terror”, was a British made film, Lifeforce, concerning space-going vampires who sucked your lifeforce instead of your blood. Even as an adult, this one gave me nightmares.
i just watched drag me to hell last night.i honestly thought the car scene was the scariest part of the whole move!
“Let The Right One In” was awesome dont miss it!
The Shining and the Exorcist the best! Bram Stoker”s a wonderful tale on film….
Well i thought the descent was scary probably because it was the first horror movie i actually sat down and watched.
The Killing Gene *like my name* about a Gene in the sperm from the most wanted gangster accourding to movie, Gerald Shemall. He payed a hooker to have his baby so than he did her without a condum. He wanted her to have his baby because he was in the deepest of all trouble and he needed the killing passed on. So once the hooker had the baby, the baby was evil and was more worse than his dad. His choice of weapon was an axe. He does killing just like his dad, but worse. He gets away with it for he is a kid and that is the last thing anybody expects.
I know this is SOOOO lame, but Signs (yes the one with Mel Gibson) scared the crap out of me in the theaters, I loved it but don’t think I slept for about 1 week after I saw it the first time (I was like 15)…. HAHAHA, pretty much all semi-decent alien movies scare me.
My all-time spooky film is called Lady In White. Not many know it or have seen it but its simple and gives you chills.
saw
When i was in my early teens, i watched Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th movies. Shit my pants, but would still watch them. The other day (nearly 27yrs later) i watched Nightmare on Elm St and pissed myself laughing. The Shining, Sixth Sense, are great horrors.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this movie and I was kind of young at the time but for some reason it freaked me out for days. It was called Devil’s Rain.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072869/
Day of the dead.
Best Gore flick ever!
That part when Rhodes gets riped in halfd by the Zombies and his guts spiull oy and he says “CHOKE ON IT! CHOKE ON IT!” before he dies made me puke when I was younger, now I just burp really loudly (tryin not to get sick again lol)
THe GRudge, and all the Saws!
Most chillers don’t frighten me. Only one movie had kept me awake for nights, John Carpenter’s Halloween. Maybe it was the mood of the night, or the fact that I was alone and young. For several nights afterward I would wake up at least four times, every noise I heard sent me into a state of paranoia.
Other than that one movie, I’m perfectly fine with any other movie. Personally, I enjoy the Rob Zombie movies.
the shining hands down
I love horror movies. The majority of the DVDs and Blu-Rays that I own, are horror flicks. One of my favorite scary moves of all time, is with out a doubt…SCREAM.That movie is simply classic. I loved how they pretty much hit on every horror cliche known to man lol. And “What’s your favorite scary movie?” is easily one of the greatest horror film lines of all time. Another one of my favorite horror movies, is 1998’s Urban Legends. Personally, I consider that movie to be underrated. I’m also a huge Jason Vorhees fan. lol And My favorite Friday The 13th movie, was the very first one. I also love the Friday the 13th remake, that came out earlier this year. Candyman is another movie that scared the hell out of me, when I was a kid. Another one of my favorites…is the very first Final Destination. Haven’t seen the latest installment yet.
Oh and am I the only one who thought the movie “Zodiac” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, was so damn creepy and scary? I guess it’s b/c all that really happened in real life. But that move gives me the creeps…especially the scene with the Zodiac killer and that couple in the park. It’s the scene where he randomly walks up to them in that old executioner outfit. I swear that just gives me the creeps.
Oh the memories. I remember a movie called Burnt Offerings. Not scary by today’s standards but it scared the sh1t out of me when I was small. The flying ball from Phantasm really brings back memories as well. One movie I’m surprised no one mentioned that scared me the most was The Omen.
Silver Bullet, It, alot of stephen king movies
also, the old amityville horror and the exorcist 1
The Exorcist. Without question the scariest movie efer made. The movie was shot within a self contained refrigeration system that caused vapor to come out of the actor’s mouths which was an absolutely chilling effect.
When I was a kid growing up the one thing that could unite my whole family was watching horror movies and i think that the ones that really scared the crap out of me were Nightmare on Elm Street and Stephen King’s “It”.. and now almost 18 years since the 1st time i saw Pennywise he still gets to me..and that show Tales from the Crypt was also one of our favs…
“The Changeling” with George C. Scott. I’m not sure why this film never got much publicity. It was one of the best ghost movies I have ever seen. Maybe because a child is involved. I also love Gothika.
‘I’m more into American and English films, usually to lazy to read subtitles. I kept hearing about a Spanish film called “The Orphanage” (El orfanato – 2007) . I finally decided to check it out and was amazed at how good it was. Again more child hauntings. Excellent cast, music and actors.
Ahhh.. there is nothing better that sitting back on the couch with a bowl of pop corn ready to see a good thriller.
the scariest horror flick ive ever seen is that dumb micheal myers movie! i have been traumatized ever since! I seriously get scared and start crying like a little baby. some people think it’s funny and scare me on purpose. I especially hate the theme song
One missed call definately hands down. Not the crappy new remake the old Japanese version. I got about 45 minutes into it and got the willies so bad i almost puked. Had to go downstairs and didn’t fall asleep til about 5 am.
Also, the Saw movies have had it’s effects on me, and the new Halloween 2 made me feel sick. I guess I just have a weak stomach.
ALSO, Wrong Turn 2 Dead End, made me feel really sick. Especially the scene where they’re sitting around the fire when they realize there eating their friend’s leg. Blech.
The Exorcisism (sp)of Emily Rose. I saw in March of this year on spring break. My life will never be the same. if you are a christian, ehn you know that this can truly happen. Other flicks are scary but on diferent level. But The Emily Rose flick is true and SCARY as hell. Smeeling something burning and 3:00am will never be the same for those who have seen this movie. I am 29.5 yrs old and I still must have a night light thanks to this movie….
The Last House on the Left is the one that haunts me to this day, but my favorite horror film (and film of all time) is Dawn of the Dead (’78).
I’m Surprised nobody had said John Carpenter’s The Thing. That’s my all time favorite horror flick. Disturbing images and it gets quite psychological. Somebody mentioned Stephen King’s It too. that one gave me a lot of nightmares growing up.
Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte
The Birds
Psycho
Wait until Dark
I love those. I think Nightmire on Elm Street and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are also great classics. More recent ones I like are: The Unborn, Drag me to hell, Haunting in conneticut, The uninvited, ect.
I still can’t watch Candyman. It gives me the heebie jeebies.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original. You see nothing, but think everything.
1. The Exorcist (1973) – I probably don’t find this as scary as most people who were around when it came out, but its still an AWESOME movie with a great, chilling story.
2. Halloween I & II (1978-1981) – I always watch them both as one long movie. The original series was much better than that crap Rob Zombie turned out.
3. Scream (1996) – Kind of spoofy, and oh-so 90’s, but its definitely entertaining and the costume always gives me the creeps.
4. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) – This is my favorite chapter in the original Friday the 13th series. It was loaded with atmosphere and was very creepy…Mrs. Voorhees’ rotten head, yikes!
5. The Blair Witch Project (1999) – Everyone either loves or hates this movie. I’m in the “love it” category! I think most people who didn’t like it don’t know how to use their imagination
Honorable mention: Rosemary’s Baby (1968) – Like, The Exorcist, kind of slow at first, but the build up is worth it.
LETTERMAN!
THE NIGHTLY NEWS SCARES ME BECAUSE ITS REAL
I know, I am sort of addicted to horror films, too. I mean, they scare me forever in a day, but it gets me excited to see what there is in the mind of people.
I am going to see Saw 6 around this halloween with my boyfriend, hopefully in a theatre. Except, he said they get worse as the numbers go up, and the other ones scare me. I try to just enjoy it because my brother loves blood, and I fear it. Over coming my fear to see what gore I can find. I really can’t wait! I will get scared!
How about… IT?! I watched it when I was a kid, really never watched a horror movie again in my life, it just scared the living cr*p out of me!!! I saw the beginning scene on tv a few months ago (little boy with the paper boat…) and it brought back all the terror I felt.
The scariest movie I ever saw was the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I think what scared me the most was the fact that it was based on a true story. REALLY CREEPY that a human could do something so evil.
I think the remake of “The Shining” was better than Kubrick’s version, since it followed the book more.
To me a good horror movie doesn’t contain blood and guts and gore, but can really mess with your mind. “The Others” starring Nicole Kidman and “Stir of Echoes” with Kevin Bacon are two good horror movies in my book.
Of course, blood and guts and gore can help spice things up. The original “13 Ghosts” was ok, but the remake with Tony Shaloub (Monk) was better. “The House on Haunted Hill” is another one where I thought the remake was better, since the special effects in the original were a bit cheesy.
“Poltergeist” would have to be tops, though. What’s so good about it is that it doesn’t really start off as being scary, unless you consider a 5-year-old talking to the TV at 2 AM to be scary. Unlike other horror movies, you don’t really find out why the ghosts were in the house, nor do we really learn why the activity is occurring, except it’s sort of explained off-hand, when Mr. Freeling confronts his boss about having moved only the headstones, but not taking time to exhume and rebury the bodies.
“Paranormal Activity” was ok, but it probably would have been better had the guy not been such an idiot about the whole situation. Of course, that’s just the ghost hunter in me talking.
Of course, nothing beats a good classic like anything by Hitchcock.
My mom is a big fan of J-Horror, like Ju-On (original version of “The Grudge”) and Ringu (”The Ring”). I think they’re ok, but the ones I did like a lot was “Shutter” and “Mirrors”.
total exorcist/ mirrors, yah…..sickness
Newer mind a movie…the news freaks me out enough as it is…
Thor
The Exorcist, without a doubt. It had me scared for years. Couldn’t go up into the attic by myself or see a priest without thinking of that movie. It’s still creepy.
the exorcist is still the scariest movie to me It is just so real an the nightmares might get you to.
