How do you plan to party for Halloween?

Halloween was easier when I was a kid. All my friends wanted to do the same thing: wear our costumes, trick-or-treat, and eat our haul until we were sick. It wasn’t until high school that my friends became too “cool” to partake in youthful hijinks like playing dress-up and generally having a good time. I’ve never been hampered by the label of coolness, and I’ve always loved dressing up for Halloween, so as an adult I’ve been doing my best to be the ambassador for Halloween spirit. I dress up for work, and at home we give out full-sized candy bars to trick-or-treaters. We also throw themed Halloween parties for our friends.

Two years ago we threw a pirate-themed party, and we had a house full of buccaneers and wenches.  Last year we threw a Rock Band party — our guests had to dress like rock stars and take turns playing on the Wii. (By the way, it’s way more fun to play Rock Band when you look the part, as the neighborhood kids enviously ask if they can play instead of collecting candy.) This year, we’re hosting a “CSI”-themed murder mystery party, where our guests will dress as forensic investigators, carry flashlights to find their way around, solve a murder, and compete to see who can do the best impression of David Caruso. Despite our zealous celebration of the holiday, we don’t take anything too seriously.

We’re lucky to have friends who enjoy elaborate costumes and cosplay, so themed parties are loads of fun. We’ve already tossed around some ideas for future parties, such as the French Revolution (with a guillotine on the lawn), the Mad Scientist theme (where we serve food that resembles anatomy), and the ever-popular “Star Trek” geek-a-thon, where our guests dress up as the “Trek” character of their choice. Federation, Dominion, or Klingon; all are welcome, so long as they drink the Romulan ale.

What’s the theme of your celebration or costume?

  5. This year we’re all going to do a scary movie all nighter. The fun part is is that its gonna be a Haunted Dollhouse theme, where my two friends and I dress up like super creepy dolls. My friend’s dad is a carpenter and he made a coffin doll sized, where we’ll put an unfortunate headless doll in, and then cover her with candy. Our guests will be in for a “treat” :)

  7. I had the best Halloween a couple of years ago! My husband and I had just married the summer before and we were staying with his family while we transitioned to South Carolina and we scared the neighborhood! Kids would not come into the yard so we had someone stand on the street giving out candy! We made a bloody, dead body with leaky brains out of a pumpkin that fell off the porch roof. My husband chased me around the yard with various tools of destruction while I screamed for someone to help me. I love being scary on Halloween!

Your ideas are so cool! I’ve been talking to one of the Assistant Managers about Halloween and she said they wanted to do something fun for the residents. Can I steal your Rock Band idea? My husband likes going to outdoor parties with bonfires for Halloween but last year’s party was boring. We stood around talking to his coworkers about work! What fun! I do not want a repeat of last year!

  8. well you could throw a perfect Halloween party by making every thing scary like if you were to do decoratins you have to go with skeleton and bats mabey some goughsts etc and for snacks you wanna make them look good but like scary so ad spiders or cenepieds etc
(plastic or course and fake ) you could also make fake blood on like cupcakes or some thing its really hard but if your good at art it should be really simple but basically you take frosting and well you can melt it a lil and color reddish black and make it look kinda like reall blood kinda bumpy and leaking you know … these are just ideas so if you dont like them you dont have to use them .. but i hoped they work or help

  9. last year was the last year of t or t’ing for my friends, and i didn’t want to go alone, so im helping out with the setup of my neighbors “haunted yard”. their mom said nay to having a haunted house, so they’re decorating their yard in a scary way, and i’m going to dress up as a fortune teller and read palms and do tarot cards :)

Usually someone comes dressed up like someone else….usually of the opposite sex and we gotta guess which of our friends they’re supposed to be. HILARIOUS! ^_^

  13. That’s great for you!

I’m only 14, but I understand how it is with people being “too cool” to dress up. I’ve been beginning to see it these past few years, and this year it’s gotten really bad.

I’m an avid anime fan, though, so high school is really where the fun STARTS for me :3 I’m finally going to be old enough to go to cons, and i’m really excited to keep dressing up for years to come, into my 20’s and 30’s. And even when I’m older, I still will.

I’m being Spain from axis powers hetalia, and i’m going to have a big trick or treating group with all my friends, who thankfully share my intrest in cosplay, and halloween as well.

I feel bad for all the people who think they’re “too cool” to dress up. They’re gonna miss out on all the fun while they’re sitting at home watching the halloween special on TV. ;p

  14. We make our own super unique costumes and drive to a an outdoor Halloween Festival, http://www.nlqp.com , Nelson’s is an awesome campground for all ages, but bring a converter for electricity to keep warm. RV access, and live music all afternoon and evening, plus a costume contest. We have a great time, and there are thousands of people who go to Gorry at the Quarry!!

  18. What!! Really? In high school all the cool kids dressed up. They just went out and got drunk while we had to stay home and hand out candy ;)

This year I plan on doing the same thing as last year. I’m going to “kinda” dress up….not really as anything but just do my style a little different and more daring than usual….and go to this downtown Seattle ‘rave’ with Ferry Corsten called freaknight. Hoo-ha! I’m excited!!

  19. We usually have a halloween party. $5 entry, and the mone goes to 1st,2nd and 3rd place prizes. If you’re too ‘cool’ to dress up, you throw in $10. We stock up on the usualy halloween staples…eyeball deviled eggs…frozen floating hands in the punch…beer pong. We’ve had some pretty good costumes attend. Definitly one of the top holidays for fun.

Although guys barely dress up and girls dress like sluts, they house is usually still decorated and it ends up being pretty fun. This year im not going to a high school one, one of my sisters friends in college is having one that we’re going to and im bringing my best friend. We won’t know anyone but sometimes thats better:)

My friends and I throw a party every year. This year I am planning on attending as Lady Ga Ga.

My hubby and I have gone as a coupled theme and have had some great costumes, for example, The Incredible’s, Popeye and Olive Oyle, a Geisha and a Sumo Wrestler. I’m proud to say, I made all of those costumes myself.
Halloween is a chance to have fun and go out and be someone or something else and I’ll NEVER be too old for dressing up at Halloween!

  28. I’m gonna be the weird guy in his 30’s all dressed up and going trick or treating one day. Lmao. I’m 13, I know a couple kids my age already saying they’re too old to dress up. Bah! You’re never too old for candy and costumes! :D

I went to a party last year that had an undead theme. No one was informed, but most of the kids had already dressed up as vamps, witches and warlocks, and zombies, so it was fine. They had tombstones and a little haunted house, and some guy played a corpse in the coffin. He looked really fake, but he’d jump out and freak out people. XD Only way it could’ve been better would’ve been if they found a way to get folks or some kind of fake hand to pop out of the graves.

This year I am going to an event my friend arranged in London (The Fox Presents…). The title of the event is ‘The Enchant-Ed Wood’ & the theme is 50s B Movies. I’ve never been to a ‘proper’ halloween do, I’m usually playing host at my own parties!

    Damn I love Halloween!!!

  31. I celebrate Samhain, the old pagan holiday. I set out a tray of wine and cakes for passing spirits, carve some pumpkins and light many candles. I write on pieces of paper the names of loved and honored people who have died in the last year, then I offer them love and thanks for blessing my life, as I burn each piece of paper. I give sweets to children who come calling, and at midnight I sing a song for peace on earth and for every soul.

  32. A friend and I used to volunteer at the local elementary school. The year before she moved away we were asked to help chaperon the school Halloween party since both of our kids would be attending. The kicker was that they told us WE couldn’t dress up. Bah! We dressed up though, She went as the window of opportunity and I went as Opportunity knocking on a door. I bought a mens xxxl long sleeve shirt (that went down to my ankles and drew a door on it with a small sign attached to the faux door knob stating ” When opportunity knocks see your window of opportunity” My friend wore a similar shirt but with a partially opened window on it with a sign “Window of Opportunity please leave open. The principle loved it, even though she said no costumes. We even wore 3 ring binders (red) as roof tops. Even the kids liked it and said we were “cool”. lol
This year I am going to Samhain ritual and will be dressed as the Tree of Life. The little ones love my little bunny stories and some of the International children stories we read. It is going to be a blast.

  35. SIGH. I only have one friend that lives near me, and apparentaly being a month older than me makes her too old and cool to trick or treat. Honestly, now I’m going to have to trek over to my other friends, or just go by myself!

I have the coolest costume prepared: dark faerie. No-one else I know is going as that, so I’ll be all lovely and unique.

    Yay Halloween! Best holiday EVER!

I’m going to make my own costume this year… or design it anyway and plead with my mom to do the sewing.

  44. Oh, I can’t wait for Halloween! I’m in high school but away from home visiting some of my family. So I’m going to dress up as a cat and take my cousins trick or treating. Then I’m going to go to a college party as a fire woman.

But last year my friends and I built a haunted house in the backyard and scared little kids. I dressed up as a modern Sleeping Beauty. I wore PJ’s, a tiara and carried a teddy bear.

Your parties sound really fun! Especially the French Revolution one because I love that time period and the clothes they used to wear. I’ll probably steal some of your ideas for when I throw my own party. (:

  48. I usually do up my workplace (my apartment resembles a Hollywood prop shop so that’s about as Halloweeny as you can get). I set up a different theme every year for the office. The past couple of years the décor was elaborate but concentrated in small areas (last year’s theme had a mad scientist bent to it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/11955916@N03/ That’s my sister as the Wicked Queen. She lives in Seattle and I loaned the costume to her. She wasn’t part of the scientist’s lab set up.) This year, I’m doing a light décor theme (Oriental Trading’s “Creepy Cloth”) but I’m hanging over EVERYONE’S cubicle and suspending silhouettes of spiders and bats in it. I have 36 pieces to hang so it’s a lot of going up and down ladders. I get to do that all tomorrow (Saturday) so it’s a big surprise on Monday morning. I love Hallowe’en.

Trick or treating isn’t my thing, to be honest. Firstly, it’s way too cold. :O ..Secondly, the people at the door at slightly creepy. And candy isn’t really my thing :)

  50. I had a Halloween party that rivaled all my previous ones. Because I had a new job and a different group of friends, I went back to the basics. Everybody in the community was making a fuss about the 31st falling on a Sunday and how trick or treating should be moved to another day. I threw a pagan party. Large bowls of candy for any kid brave enough to venture out on a Sunday, some of the cheesiest horror movies that have made before 1984. I won the crowd over with seafood snacks and Hurricanes (red colored liquors) but the killer was the fact I picked movies that no one ever heard of like “I spit on your grave” and “Sleepaway Camp”

  51. I usually just give out candy for halloween, but always hit the club on the weekend before. This year, I’m hosting my own Halloween party. No theme though, because thats way to expensive (decorations are expensive) plust my friends are a bunch of drunks they wouldn’t want to do that, they rather drink lol If I would ever do a theme it would be a vampire theme, that would be fun.

  53. I have been decorating and scaring for Halloween for about 20 years now. What started as a simple decorated porch is now a full fledged Haunt. It runs all the way around the house, through the back yard and out the other side. I have gotten into homemade animated creatures for the last few years and have at least 5 actors in costume hidden here and there. We guarantee everyone will get scared or at least startled once during the trip through. I personally have made football linebackers scream like little girls. It’s a good year if at least one female releases some fluid.

    Happy Halloween!

  59. Halloween is the bomb.
This year me and my friends are having a party at her dad’s farm. Bonfire, fourwheeling, and Jason movies. The key is to watch the scary movie THEN go fourwheeling through the woods and out in the hayfield and be scared shitless.
AND gingerbread zombies. Apparently I’m not the first one to think of the idea, but I think it’s a wonderfully creepy way to corrupt an innocent tradition :)

  60. I don’t celebrate Halloween – never have. It’s an English/American thing, not an Australian one. It’s only out here because of American pop culture’s prevalence, or among Goths who enjoy this sort of thing anyway. (Yes, I know its roots go back to the Celtic New Year, but that’s hardly what’s celebrated now in the bastardised cartoony version of the Christian festival.)
