Deep-fried…what?

I recently read an article that truly disturbed me.  Now, before I tell you what it is, let me confess that I am no health nut.  I suffer from a mild cheeseburger addiction, I can’t say no to a slice of pizza, and I’ve been known to put away more than my fair share of tacos al pastor.  I especially love anything fried –well, almost anything, which leads me into that disturbing article.  It was a feature from a Dallas/Fort Worth news site talking about the finalists for the Big Tex Choice Award at this year’s State Fair of Texas.  Topping the list, and I kid you not, was deep-fried butter.  Yes, take a moment if you need one.  Deep-fried butter.  Here’s the “tantalizing” description:

“100 percent pure butter is whipped ’til light and fluffy, then specially sweetened with a choice of several flavors. It is then surrounded by a ‘special dough’ and quick-fried.”

Listen, I know that state fairs aren’t exactly a bastion of healthy eating.  I know very few people, myself included, who would be satisfied to wander the midway gnawing on a celery stick and handful of goji berries, but this seems ridiculous to me:  gluttonous simply for gluttony’s sake.  Is this the dietary path we’re on?  Have we reached the point where we’re so beyond caring about what goes into our bodies that we’re ingesting the most decadent, non-nutritional, artery clogging thing we can think of?  I find it somewhat unconscionable that something so grotesque and unquestionably destructive could be considered for any award (other than, perhaps, “The Best Foods You Should Never Put into Your Body” award), especially in a state (not to mention an entire country) facing a huge obesity problem.

In the interest of balancing out the scales, so to speak, I’ve scouted out some delicious suggestions from Answers users on alternative methods for preparing some of our favorite fried foods, including chicken, fish, French fries, and falafel.  Here’s hoping that next year’s entries are a little more creative and a little less deadly.

What is your opinion of the latest food fad–deep-fried butter?  And what healthier alternatives can you suggest for preparing your favorite fried concoctions?

  1. So???

We eat fried ice cream ( ice cream rolled in corn flakes then dropped in the deep friar for a few seconds) as a dessert in our Mexican restaurants. Why would this be such a s stretch??? Hate to tell you but fried Snicker, Milky and Butterfinger bars have graced the midways for YEARS. The heck with the candy bars, think about what a funnel cake is—- a deep fried pancake with sugar on it.

  3. Listen, ridicious deep fried foods isn’t a staple to anyone’s diet. The main purpose of deep fried butter isn’t to induce a heart attack. It’s to make money. The crazier, the more moolah it makes. The Texas State Fair lasts like, a month. As a Texan, it’s tradition to go to the State Fair and try out these crazy foods. I don’t go home and make my own deep fried candy bars and deep fried peaches and cream (another finalist for the Big Tex Award). It’s once a year for a reason. Obesity isn’t a factor. It’s all about how far you can go to make a buck. Maybe you should write about that, not how fat someone’s going to get by eating something so “gluttonous” as deep fried butter. Get a life.

  8. Ever heard of “fried ice cream”? Where was the outrage over that? ;-) How about alfredo sauce? It’s not deep fried, but it is chock full of fat. Again, no outrage, no “gluttonous simply for gluttony’s sake”?

I doubt it is a whole stick of butter and I doubt anyone is suggesting serving them daily. It is a novelty item in a state fair food competition. Big deal.

Moderation is the key in almost all things, and _occasional_ decadence usually won’t kill ya.

  11. WOW that is beyond gross!!!! Who thinks of this crap? Whats next? No one should be eating butter in the first place! All it is is saturated fat, your body makes saturated fat already. What your body needs is polyunsaturated fats like Canola oil(Canadian grapeseed oil) or olive oil!

I saw something recently on QVC that was a fyer that spins around whatever you are frying to get rid of up to 33% greese. I don’t really eat much of fried stuff, but I think it would be helpful for people who don’t completely want to give up their fried stuuf ^^

Just like eating celery one time will not unclog your arteries. I cannot understand why you are making a fuss over this unless you just want attention. well you got it.

  19. Well I agree that they could go with healthier choices,… but not of the part where you say is this the dietary path we are going down.. No it is not.. it’s just so much as that the State Fair of Texas.. Is not made to be the worlds center of health nuts.. It’s for well Texans… and I don’t know about you, but don’t we just fry everything? Steak, Chicken, okra, pickles, fries, onion rings, etc.. The State Fair is simply living up to the question “what will they fry next”. Sure this may not be their best idea.. but just because you eat it doesn’t mean your an obese moron that doesn’t know how to eat right.

  21. I am not defending this disgusting sounding treat but butter is not that bad for you in moderation it is the factory farming industry that has taken the naturally health goodness out of butter, milk and cheese. If cows are grazed on a pasture the meat and dairy from them will be high in DHA. I just wanted to put that out there to combat the idea that butter is the most unhealthy thing a person can consume.

  24. How can you compare fried ice cream to fried butter? Ice cream is an actual dessert. Butter is a food additive. Fried ice cream is definitely the lesser of two evils here. It just goes to show you that some people will eat anything, ESPECIALLY if it is fried. Why don’t we eat fried ketchup? Or a fried leather shoe? Ugh, it is just disgusting what some people will consume, and you know that there are some foolish people who eat this regularly. It’s a shame. It’s habits like this which make non-americans judge us as being fatsos!

In this world of people panicking over stupid things (the swine flu shot is more likely to kill you then the swine flu) we really do not need alarm bells sounded over deep fried butter.
is anything else at a fair any healthier?
are the vapors from the frying going to escape and kill us?

  29. First of all, the thought of deep-fried butter is utterly disturbing. I love deep-fried cheesecake and funnel cakes, but that’s…horrendous. (I’m even a little grossed out by deep-fried cheesecake, but I like it anyway XD.)

Now, for the people who are going off about the article being stupid: Deep-fried butter making everyone fat is NOT the point of the article. The point is that we should all really reconsider what we ingest and create in the kitchen, especially us Americans, who have developed an alarming obesity rater. Deep-fried butter just happened to be the catalyst for the creation of the article.

  34. Wow this is really something to get all up and in your face about! The fair lasts for about one month and most people will go for one or two days and maybe eat one serving or helping of this and all you self righteous protectors of the American way are up in arms. Probably while or right after downing half of a pizza or a big mac and washing it downwith a 64 ounce soda. This country and the economy and the environment and health care and etc must all be in pretty darn good shape for you to have to search for something like this to complain about!

  38. The issue for me isn’t the effect it will actually have on people at the State Fair, its about the message it sends. I’m from one of the northern countries in Europe, where there is a lot of pressure not to be overweight. For us to hear about this kind of thing is quite shocking, and reinforces one of the most destructive and universal beliefs about Americans. I happen to know a lot of healthy, intelligent, really great American people, and to have a food culture that reflects this badly upon them is very sad. It doesn’t matter if it’s only one time, but at a public event, the government should be sending the message that, “no, we do not support the 2nd highest death cause in the country!” not, “yes, please eat more, get fatter, and die sooner.” Deep-fried butter probably wouldn’t do anything to you in the large scheme of things, but it’s accepting foods like this as a part of American life which causes the real harm.

  44. You know, while I find all of this deep-fried stuff abhorrent myself, the one common thread between the previous crazes like fried ice cream and candy bars was that people eat those on their own. What makes the deep-fried butter idea even less appealing is that most people don’t eat butter by itself.

  46. I am much less bothered by deep-fried butter than the fair I went to recently that had chicken-fried bacon. Personally, I think you top that with some gravy and a side of fried butter and you got a meal worthy of a cardiologist. But remember, these are what they do for fairs. Nobody seriously does this at home when they are looking through the fridge and thinking…gee I don’t have any salad, I think I will just fry up a mess of butter for dinner.

Get real. I know it is a way to sell your column and stress healthy eating, and I am a big promoter of healthy eating, but reasonable moderation is the best way to keep people from taking these one time opportunities to lifetime excess.

  48. Yes, it’s ridiculous but think about where it’s being sold. No one is trying to market this junk in supermarkets, restaurants or anywhere sane people normally eat. No, it’s being sold in a venue historically filled with freaks, geeks, weirdos and questionable ‘treats’. Yes, if it can be wrapped in batter or cornflakes, it will be fried.

  50. Meh.

People do not form their dietary habits based upon offerings at the state fair. It’s a novelty- as in “Gee, I wonder what that tastes like?” Deep fried Twinkies have been around for a long time, but I don’t think many people have installed fat fryers in their kitchens in order to make it a daily snack food.

I see no reason to get bent out of shape- although, of course, deep fried butter lacks the nutritional qualities of staples like deep fried corn on the cob, broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke hearts, zucchini, etc.

  56. Wow, some of the answers on here are a tad bit ridiculous. Seriously, can’t you see the difference between eating ICE CREAM and eating BUTTER? You can actually eat ice cream by itself. And alfredo sauce? OF COURSE the thing is full of fat. But you don’t see anyone eating bowlfuls of alfredo sauce by itself. It’s always paired up with something like pasta. Deep-friend butter IS a stretch, and any sane person I know doesn’t eat butter by itself.

That said, I’ve heard of the concept of deep-friend butter before. Just look no further than butter-loving Paula Deen. But when someone made her some, she was totally grossed out by it. “What the hell is wrong with you?” I think she said.

Fast food, huge dinner buffets, and deep fried everything. Its what people want, and it makes me sick. Heart disease is on the rise and its such an easy thing to avoid. If we all took one small step to our health, (an apple a day!) our bodies would kindly thank us. Instead of oil fried this and that, maybe fairs could offer the items baked? With a side of carrot sticks, or grapes. Would look much more appealing as well. I know companys are trying to keep food costs down, but they would make more buisness with better food! I just dont understand how people eat themselves-literally to death!

A previous comment stated “Seriously, can’t you see the difference between eating ICE CREAM and eating BUTTER? You can actually eat ice cream by itself”

Unless I’m very much mistaken, butter is salted milk & ice cream is sweetened [and flavored] milk – the main article does mention that the butter will be sweetened & flavored. Don’t let the salt fool you. Almost everything you eat would be inedible without salt. Even wholemeal bread tastes like sour milk without salt.

We call it “puff-puff.” Six balls of these donuts, and I was set till lunch. I don’t know what we could have done without them. (Actually, I do- the alternative, called *AKARA* in Yoruba language, is made from mashed soaked cowpeas, similarly fried, which are somewhat higher in protein. The two can be eaten together, akara being savory, and puff-puff sweet..)

  69. Jen D has a good point, deep fried butter might be a one time deal. However, Conan O’Brien had a guest on his show rescently who ate nothing but fried foods. Watching him fry a Twinkie was revolting.

Now I’m not a health fanatic, but I’m also not a festering blob of sludge that oozes down the mid-way. There should be a mutual balance of healthy and unhealthy foods.

Funnel cakes are a treat reserved only for rare occasions. That’s why we normally see them at the fair and nowhere else. I say let people have their fun and then they can go home and go on a 2 week detox if they are so inclined to do so.

Personally I don’t care for the fair. To crowded, noisy, hot and smelly. Those events need some serious body control. I’m also disgusted by the fact that so many people there decide to throw their garbage on the street instead of finding a garbage can. It’s so disrespectful.

  77. Well I make home-made french fries and tortilla chips. They’re really easy and I use olive oil with a certain amount of salt. I know what goes into my fried potato or tortilla, making it a lot more appetizing. As for my opinion on the butter, eewww!! That sounds revolting and utterly disgusting! I’d much rather go for the more famed “deep-fried twinkie”. I’m sure it would be much more delicious!

sorry you’re redo wasn’t all that good either.

I don’t really thing so many unhealthy things should be promoted, though it is up to the people to decide whether to eat them or not. Everything in moderation I think..though I do want to try a deep fried twinki!

  81. “Deep fried pepsi is frozen balls rolled in batter which will be deep fried and served with loads of powdered sugar.”

    http://www.squidoo.com/deep-fried-pepsi for the recipe.

Not that I’m necessarily condoning deep-fried butter, but who hasn’t licked a little off the knife or their finger after buttering a roll or biscuit with honey butter or the like? It’s not *repulsive* to eat by itself, but without something breaking up the richness, I don’t see how someone could, and the fried version seems to take care of that problem.

As for “Oh, how fat the Americans are!” Food for thought, the deep-fried Mars bar originated in Scotland in the 1990’s. It spread to Australia and New Zealand before making an appearance in the US.

  83. Yeah, it’s a State Fair thing. Each year the State Fair of Texas introduces a new fried food, so don’t count on that changing any time soon. They’ve done everything from Oreos to ice cream to Coca Cola. All sound crazy and all turned out to be delicious. I am usually able to put aside my apprehension for fried food and junk to test them and they are pretty good. But this year I think I’m gonna have to pass. I agree with you, why would anyone eat balls of deep-fried cholesterol? Would anyone in their right mind do that? Has the State Fair really run out of unhealthy ideas that they have to turn to the most unhealthy thing to fry? Hey, maybe it’ll be surprisingly good like all the other crazy things they’ve decided to fry, but I don’t think I have the stomach to try it.

  84. At the Minnesota State Fair they have deep fried everything on a stick. New things every year. A couple years back there was deep fried pig fat (for real…probably a little bit of meat but they advertized it as “fat”) chocolate, and ice cream. So if you think cookie dough is bad (no, I didn’t read the article b/c I’m really sleep now) just take a trip to MN in August and bring your camera b/c you won’t believe what they have!!

  86. I think that we are taking the whole deep frying thing a bit too far. I mean deep fried ice-cream was okay, but then we went to deep fried mars bars. This is going too far. Deep fried cookie dough, yeah it may taste nice, but then we go and complain on how obese the population is becoming. I wonder why? Money. It’s all about money. Same with smoking. We all know it kills, but we still do it. I don’t see the government trying to stop it. Why? Money. Alcohol isn’t very good for us either, and drink driving causes many deaths per year, but we still keep it. Don’t get me wrong….some people LOVE these things and “can’t live without them”, but it kills us. It’s all just money.

  93. First off – it’s not just butter, it’s butter wrapped in dough. In case no one noticed, butter wrapped in (layers of) dough could also be the description of a croissant.

Secondly, this is a state fair – not a restaurant where people would eat this on a normal basis.

Third – don’t blame Americans for deep fried everything. I first heard about deep fried Twinkies while visiting Scotland, and later found out that the “delicacy” was first created in England.

  100. I can not believe the fuss. I am from Texas and proud of it. . I go to the State Fair every year, basically just to have a Fletcher’s Corn Dog.
It says deep fried BUTTER, not margarine as most of you probably eat. I may not try the butter, but I intend to try the fried peanut butter cup macaroon. It is the Texas State Fair. The BEST state fair.
It does not say that this is how we eat all year round. How many of you out there go to McDonald’s for a Big Mac 3 times a week that are making such a fuss at our novelties during fair time.

  101. That’s pretty nasty: you’re essentially eating a ball of congealed fat, cooked in liquid fat. What could possibly be worse for you? Its all trans and saturated fat! I suppose next they’re going to have sugared lard shakes, and flavored buckets of Crisco…mmmmmm

  102. Fairs: they aren’t exactly known for their delicious salads and carrot sticks. I mean, deep fried foods of all kinds have been popping up in fairs forever now. That’s how they make a lot of their money.

BUT… deep fried butter? That doesn’t even make any sense. Deep frying fat with more fat? No one eats just plain butter (well, not anyone normal that is) so why would anyone want to eat it deep fried? It is indeed gluttony, and the message it sends is… well… shameful in my opinion. Some other countries struggle with starvation, and here we Americans are, deep frying butter?

I know, I know… fairs only last a month, people don’t eat this all the time or make it at home, it’s only novelty food… but still… it’s no wonder this country is known for being… well… fat. =/

  104. I would like to point out that eating fatty foods does not make a person a glutton–unless they eat massive amounts of it. A glutton is a person who eats large amounts of food at one sitting and on a regular basis. IN OTHER WORDS–GLUTTONY IS OVEREATING. It’s the quantity of food consumed that makes someone a glutton, whether its broccoli or fried anything. This article is a knee-jerk reaction by someone who wants to sound politically correct
on health issues, because that, my dears, is the “New Cool”. Everyone knows that deep fried foods are bad for your health. Get over yourselves and your self-righteous attitudes–deep frying weird foods is just a way to get consumers to spend money on something that is a novelty. Next year they’ll probably be selling deep-fried earthworms….then PETA can have a turn at sounding off their outrage.

Sounds more like deep-fried butter cream frosting.

Most cakes from a bakery use butter cream frosting, and that’s just butter whipped with sugar.

Cakes themselves are a bastion of everything you shouldn’t eat regularly.

And really… you might be better off eating the bowl of alfredo sauce than the alfredo sauce combined with pasta depending on your school of nurtionism (ooooh carbs are evil… no wait, fat is evil… no wait, eating is the purest evil!).

  109. Ok, I see how all this would be very unhealthy, but this is not something people eat everyday. It’s probably once or twice a year, and I don’t think anyone is advancing toward the fried butter. Well, I’m not anyways. I am a funnel cake fan, but I don’t eat them every day. When the Florida Folk Festival comes by, I’ll buy two within the four days it lasts, and I’ll wait till next year for more funnel cakes.
Some people act like it’s going to kill you. Grow up. It may kill you if you eat it every single day for the rest of your life. But once a year, don’t worry about it.

Aptly named as it has two pounds of sausage, Three packages of Bacon assorted spices and lard. Tomato slices, Onion and hot peppers are added just for the fun of it..

The sausage is pressed into a patty measuring nearly 12″ x 24 ” and lard and spices are placed atop it. Then it is folded into a smaller patty. It is then wrapped in the strips of bacon. They are wrapped in a criss cross pattern to keep everything inside of the loaf. When done it builds a cardio vascular dream come true brick weighing about three pounds. Shove it in an oven or on a grill until done.

  119. I don’t know what the BIG stink is all about. Actually the worst stuff we can put in our bodies are all the margarines that are made with hydroginated or partially hydroginated oils. The food industry did this to basically healthy vegetable oils. We now know that these Trans Fats do our bodies and hearts more harm than 100% real butter.
My dad lived to be 85 yrs old. We joked that he had some bread with his butter. We kept it in the refrigerator so he would slice off the 1 lb block and lay it on his bread. Mom was 88 when she passed.
Maybe we would be better off eating real food instead of all the manufactured stuff the food companies have been feeding us. All those power drinks are mostly sugar. Read your labels and make your choices.

However, I know just a taste is stupid but why do they have that? I will wonder if it is at all good. Did it win for a comical reason as outlandish? It’s not a matter of it tasting good or not, it’s the fact that it is so horrible for you and that people (myself included) are dropping their jaws in awe of this gross, heart-attack on a stick. Why would anyone want to put this in their body? You don’t even feel gross after you eat a large french fry from McDonald’s? I think there needs to be regulations on these sorts of things. Because this country is so flippin FAT and obese and people can’t stop stuffing their face with food (disgusting, high fat and cholesterol foods, not to mention) we are spending billions and billions more dollars on healthcare and medication.

Becoming the “fried food fair” has helped draw more people to the venue and create much needed revenue. The judges pick things that taste good AND will generate controversy and interest. Thank you Yahoo! Answers for further generating interest. By the way, I AM a HEALTH, except for my once a month cheat day and Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Fair Day. There are many people here who ONLY eat things like that come “fair time”. Texas is a state where chicken fried steak, fried chicken, fried everything, rules (I grew up in Texas, so I know). Thankfully, my parents made sure we did not eat fired food more than once a week.

  138. As to “deep fried butter” I don’t think it could be classified as a new fad. I believe some people come up with ideas of “what if” or “what would” and someone came up with the idea of deep fried butter for the State Fair visitors to try if they wished — not the invention or creation of something for the super markets to sell. So, let’s not get our drawers all in a wad over something rather funny. Wonder how many other things will prove to be so out of sync? Just enjoy the fair!!!!

Deep fried butter should no way be considered as food concoction. It is just so unhealthy. And if they are this desperate to make money.. they need to rethink their ideas because this one is just idiotic. Fried butter just sounds gross… when I go to a carnival… I don’t envision myself sinking my teeth into some crunchy, then oozy runny warm butter bar. Its just disgusting! And the writer of this has a good point. America’s food source is mainly fast-food in a lot of cases and the carnival putting out crap like this isn’t helping our problem one bit. And if they are going to put some new concoction out, they should should atleast make it with atleast some kind of REAL food. not something that can be used as a condiment

Only San Francisco’s mayor who is a loud mouth,”I wnat it my way little dictator” would attempt to force people into his beliefs as he has done before. He wants to put an extra tax on soft drinks and sugar sweets in order to curb the consumption. This guy needs to go to a communist country where he will feel at home as the dictator. 154. I am from Texas, and I saw the news episode that was talking about the new invention for the State Fair of Texas…deep fried butter. I was born and raised here, and jesus…I CAN NOT IMAGINE EATING DEEP FRIED BUTTER. I’m sure the majority of the world thinks Texans are fatass cowboys…but that’s not the case. There are a lot of cowboys in the deep south and east/west…but fried butter is not a common thing where I live. It truly disgusts me…especially since I live in the Dallas area. It’s stuff like that …that makes Texas looks BAD!

  157. How is this really any different from a cream-filled donut? or those fried wontons you get at Chinese buffets–they are filled with cream cheese which really isn’t that much different from butter. Or even fries topped with cheese? It’s just another variation on the fried + dairy theme. They’ve got you talking!

  159. Deep fried butter, lol. I just can’t stop laughing. Some of these comments are totally hilarious, I have been cracking up for about 15 minutes now.

I will admit that the thought makes my stomach turn and I LOVE butter…but those who say this is the fair and it’s okay to eat unhealthy things when at the fair is right. I mean, it’s the fair. Unless the fair comes to your town once a week and you go every week, you should be okay. ;)

*shivers* Just the thought of eating a chunk of whipped butter that has been thrown in a fryer makes my stomach flip.

I would not eat a tablespoon of landolakes no matter how depressed I was. It is NOT the same thing as ice cream.

I’m sure it taste good but I would have to be forced to try it.

  172. …that’s fairly disgusting, yes. Still, you have to admit that people who provide food at fairs and other public venues are becoming either increasingly creative or increasingly desperate. I was at the L.A. Fair the other day, and someone was offering chocolate-dipped cotton candy, chocolate-dipped runts (which seems sort of pointless to me, but whatever), and the clincher, chocolate-dipped BACON. That’s…not right. I would almost consider that a sin against God and nature.

The lesson in all this? Don’t eat carnival food if you don’t want to hear your arteries screaming in pain.

I get your point, its not going to affect you if you try it once but we sure wouldnt be having all these obesity problems in America if these types of foods were never introduced.
For example, kids dont know what a balanced diet means. So if they find something like this thats so ‘delicious’ and has like a gazillion calories in it and clogs arteries they wont care about the bad part. They will want it and will get it.
A month of deep fried stuff (even if it is only a month) can really affect your health…

  184. Okay, there are a lot of extreme opinions in this article. However, I don’t think the point is, “oh hey look how nasty Americans are.” I think the point here is that our culture is evolving to condone such things. Now, in moderation, nothing will kill you. But, these thins eventually evolve and become part of everyday life. One of the previous commentors said that there was a store selling deep-fried pepsi and making a good chunck of money from the business. Now, I am all for trying new things, and I am all for the occasional day of splurging, but I think that a lot of choices made today ARE unhealthy. I am a highschool student, and no joke, the only things you can buy for lunch at my school are pizza, nachos, french fries, cookies, or a rather unappetizing, wilted salad. I wish that there was more of a happy medium between the two. Maybe instead of only having a what-is-the-best-deep-fried-food, they could also have a what-is-the-best-healthy-food as well.

  186. Actually, Deep-Fried Peaches and Cream won the competition. But Deep Fried Butter was one of the contenders. The first one just sounds like a glorified fried pie. I would imagine the butter thing would be no more than a big fried ball of batter, buttery, I’ll admit, but just fried batter nonetheless. But……B U T T E R !?!?!?

Every year somebody tries to come up with something new to deep fry. I guess this means they must be running out of stuff.

  187. Hmmm… well, I think it sounds disgusting, although I am one to slather on butter when making, say, garlic bread, or even when enjoying waffles.

I guess deep-fried butter isn’t that much of a stretch from people, like myself, who already abuse the purpose of butter… but ugh. I can’t imagine eating straight up butter. Is it all liquid in the middle after you bite through the “special crust”? Or does the butter somehow evaporate and get crusty?

Either way, it seems like a ridiculously and unnecessarily gross food choice. It has nothing to do with obesity… although obviously the people who are getting so defensive have been affected by this and feel the need to defend themselves by getting angry at a blog… but just the concept itself sounds sickening. Of all the things to fry… well, I guess they ran out of creative ideas.

  189. I agree with the writer. Even though people will not go home and make their own–all that fat, just biting through pure fat and unhealthy oils, is going to clog up your arteries–or contribute SIGNIFICANTLY to that.
“Whipping the butter and adding sugars”…SICK, just have whipped cream on a sundae!:) lol

And I think fried ice cream is completely okay. I’ve had it once, and it’s not a 30 gram stick of fat surrounded by fat. It just has sugar in it.

  190. As long as you don’t eat it more than once or twice a year, what is the problem?? Pure butter is much better for you than margarine or some of the other fake spreads out there. Moderation is the key.

  191. Yes, this is indeed rediculous. As a culture we have forgotten the total porpuse of food -to sustain us and help our bodies function. It seems everyone has lost sight of that, even myself sometimes. We put too much emphasis on what food can be the most extreme, come in the largest portion or who can finish 60 hot dogs in 5 minutes. Its quite sickening actually, that someone would come up with this. Can it even be considered food?, I’m sure there is not positive nutritional value in extreme foods like this.

  199. What I find worse is that we’ve started viewing food in terms of morality, as many of these comments show. It’s not “wrong” or “unconscionable” to make deep-fried butter, it’s just SILLY.

Having said that, I wouldn’t try it – it sounds not merely unhealthy, but disgusting as well. But it’s NOT typical, it’s NOT something Americans eat every day – if it was, it’s wouldn’t be notable enough for this post to have been made in the first place.

Comment posted on September 24th, 2009 at 6:36 pm by Tamar B
  200. This article really annoyed me. As others have pointed out, I don’t think anyone is suggesting to add this to the everyday diet.

It’s a food novelty and every year our state fair (WI) has a ton of ridiculous, artery-clogging wads of congealed fat that barely qualify as food. This year, for example, the must-have thing was chocolate covered bacon on a stick.

Yes, tons of people go to try this stuff (and, in case you’re wondering putting together the two most awesome foods -bacon and chocolate- together does not have the doubly awesome results you might expect, in fact, one might say it was TERRIBLE) just to say they’ve tried it. But I would think it would be truly doubtful to find someone who’s going to take these crazy food ideas and try to make them at home on a regular basis.

And, regardless of that fact, since when is it the responsibility of the food vendor to police what people eat? If someone wants to stuff their face with ten pounds of butter, I say go for it. I don’t think some socialist food nazi should be telling people what they can and can’t eat. Whether or not you want to eat fried lard balls or plain tofu on a stick, I think it’s up to you what you put into your body, and ultimately your responsibility when the health problems set in later in life.

I grew up in the land of cheese and beer and we have a huge obesity problem here as well as the rest of the country, no doubt, but food is a highly personal and individualized choice. If someone wants to let loose and have some disgusting, greasy concoction on a rare occasion, feel-good social commentators should just keep to themselves and refrain from making morality judgments on people.

I would assume that given the massive scale of the obesity problem in the US, the contribution of “fair food” is so minute it doesn’t even register on the radar. If you want to go after the real cause of the issue, start with the commercial food industry and sedentary lifestyles we have so easily come to adapt in this country and then, maybe you have a chance of making a dent in this wide-spread issue.

  217. I think it’s funny that people on here seem to think that they’re literally throwing a stick of butter in a fryer. Don’t you guys realize that a stick of butter in a fryer would just melt?

Instead, it’s a buttery dough that they’re putting in the fryer. It’s the same as a funnel cake, but much more buttery. Same with deep fried Pepsi – deep fried pepsi is literally the same as a funnel cake recipe, but the liquid is replaced by Pepsi (or Coke, or similar).

It just sounds like a novelty, because they called it by something extreme – really, if you actually read the entire article instead of just the title, you’ll see it’s just a fried dough.

SIDENOTE: Forbes lists America as #9 most overweight country in the world. It’s not exactly something to write home about, but we aren’t the fattest nation. :)

It doesn’t appeal to me, but if people want to eat that stuff, that’s their business.

People are too quick to pass judgment and impose their beliefs on others. Who is anyone to say what’s nasty or not?

And deep fried ice cream and pancakes? What is the point? So far in my life, the worst thing I have some across is a deep fried moro bar, but that picture is something else.

Just think to yourself when you eat that stuff:

  226. I know eating fried butter sounds bad but do you call putting it on your morning toast or tomato sandwich?

Here is something else most people do not knowabout butter it has the following benefits.

    1. Butter is rich in the most easily absorbable form of Vitamin A necessary for thyroid and adrenal health.
    2. Contains lauric acid, important in treating fungal infections and candida.
    3. Contains lecithin, essential for cholesterol metabolism.
    4. Contains anti-oxidants that protect against free radical damage.
    5. Has anti-oxidants that protect against weakening arteries.
    6. Is a great source of Vitamins E and K.
    7. Is a very rich source of the vital mineral selenium.
    8. Saturated fats in butter have strong anti-tumor and anti-cancer properties.
    9. Butter contains conjugated linoleic acid, which is a potent anti-cancer agent, muscle builder, and immunity booster
    10. Vitamin D found in butter is essential to absorption of calcium.
    11. Protects against tooth decay.
    12. Is your only source of an anti-stiffness factor, which protects against calcification of the joints.
    13. Anti-stiffness factor in butter also prevents hardening of the arteries, cataracts, and calcification of the pineal gland.
    14. Is a source of Activator X, which helps your body absorb minerals.
    15. Is a source of iodine in highly absorbable form.
    16. May promote fertility in women.9
    17. Is a source of quick energy, and is not stored in our bodies adipose tissue.
    18. Cholesterol found in butterfat is essential to children’s brain and nervous system development.
    19. Contains Arachidonic Acid (AA) which plays a role in brain function and is a vital component of cell membranes.
    20. Protects against gastrointestinal infections in the very young or the elderly.

Also as a nation we have cut our butter consumption from 18 pounds per. person per year to 4 pounds per. year so the current weight gain cannot be from butter.

  227. ok i read alot of the comments on here and i just have to say to all the people that think if you eat butter and fried food you are going to die tomorrow.
you have to remember what we used to eat years ago.
my grandpa used to have bacon eggs toast and coffee and toast with you guessed it REAL BUTTER on it every morning and lived to be 83 years old before he died of cancer! the difference between us and the older generation is EXCERCISE!!!!!! we bitch about all the saturated fat and additives in food well if you get off your butt and work instead of playing video games and watching tv shows about how to cook healthy you would find out that life will look alot brighter for your future. and yes you can eat stuff that tastes good if you work it off
so in closing GET OFF THE COUCH AND OUT FROM IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER AND SWEAT ALITTLE.

  236. It’s state fair food, and the state fair comes once a year. It may last a month in Texas, but most states have state fairs that last a week or two. So what if people try unusual novelty food once or twice in that time? They won’t see it again for another year. People are way too uptight about this. Obesity comes from a lifestyle choice made up of bad decisions every day, not from an occassional unhealthy treat.

Saying that that is nasty is lke saying that ever eating mcdonalds is nasty. I mean if you eat mcdonalds all the time you’re most likely going to get fat/have health problems but it isnt bad for you every once in a while. That guy who ate mcdonalds for a month and almost died from it was some kind of sick idiot for even attempting that kind of thing. who wants mcdonalds every day? 268. My body is my property, and nobody has a right to say anything about what I eat. If a woman has a constitutional right to murder her unborn baby, then I have the constitutional right to eat poison, or anything that you consider gross or unhealthy, and nobody has a right to invade my privacy and tell me what is good for me. What is good for you might not be good for me, and vice-versa. We all individuals, so it is impossible for you to know what is good for me since we are all different and supposed to be different.

And why to left-wingers and Californians think they have a right to tell me what to do with my body? If I want to eat deep-fried feces, and drink 100 softdrinks a day, that is my business, and mine alone.

  287. Y’all are making a bigger deal about this than it’s worth. When deciding whether it’s good for your health or not you always go back to the basics. Calories in = calories burned. If you do regular exercise and burn the calories you take in, you’ll be fine. It’s the people who eat too much than are putting themselves in danger.

The French diet tends to be a little heavier on the cholesterol with lots of butter, croissants, escargot, etc. but they tend to eat smaller portions and their lifestyles tend to be more active than Americans. Also, if you know which foods help counter the high cholesterol (like oatmeal+exercise), then you’re golden because you can bring your cholesterol levels back to normal with a few days worth of healthy foods.

I for one, am all for this idea. I think our current food choices are extremely limited. When you travel abroad to places like China, Thailand, and the like, their food choices are so much more varied it’s not even funny. They have so many types of vegetables and fruits that they eat. We basically only eat chicken, beef, pork, apples, oranges, bananas, broccoli, lettuce, onions, carrots, same old stuff day after day.

To see people branching out and broadening their minds actually makes me happy because I for one don’t want to see the exact same food choices year after year. I don’t care if they are a bit fatty, I’ll just have to make the necessary adjustments in my life to accommodate.

  288. We live in a country where children are brought up watching commercials on cereal. Now, the commercial says the cereal is nutritious, because it has a minimal % of Iron, whilst completely ignoring the fact that these children might just as well be plugged into a corn syrup IV.

I’d say things in this country are pretty bad, and I’m not surprised someone came up with something as grotesque (my gag reflex is haunted by the tohugh) as deep-fried butter.

However, when you consider that there is corn syrup in “organic crab cakes”, and that food companies are allowed NOT to report trans fat levels if they are below, what is it, 2%?

I don’t find this piece quite relevant. There have been endless studies and even films about how bad the food we eat is, and yet nothing is changing… It’s quite distressing.

  299. this article is ridiculous. these people are eating these fried foods maybe once a year. the blogger says he can’t turn down a slice of pizza and he has a burger addiction, he probably gains more weight in a month with those habits than the folks who try the fried butter at the state fair. i’ve tried fried oreos, fried twinkies, fried snickers, fried ice cream, fried cheesecake, and fried coke–key word being “tried”. i don’t seek them out. i don’t go home and make them in my kitchen. the fun of going to the fair is to try the food–and fairs are not, nor have they ever been, intended to cater to the health conscious. people need to get a grip and live a little. a little bite of fried butter at a fair is not going to kill you, unless you choke on it.

  300. Deep Fried Butter!?!? How Is That Possible!?!? I Swear, Next People Are Gonna Say “Deep Fried _______!”
    Put Food/Drink Here
What The H*ll!!! Are People TRYING To kill Us?!?! And Besides, People Don’t give A Sh*t About Us, They Just Wanna Make Money!!! It Pisses Me Off How People Are Abusing The Precious Items That We Have! Sure, Fat And Other Health Hazards Make Food Taste Good, But Sometimes We Have to Stop And Eat Something Healthy! I Know I’m A Hypocrite For Saying This But, At Least I’m Trying to Eat Healthier!

  302. yuck, the whole fried butter, cany bar, cookie dough, oreos, eww those things were not ment to eat that way. Now fried ice cream is not so bad its a dessert from another ethnicity that has been enjoyed for ages and ice cream has nutrients that these other snack foods dont. All the other crap please give me a break and if you want high cholesteral and heart problems these things are going to give it to you, and for those of you eating fried butter you may as well stick a spoon in the tub of butter.

  305. What is disturbing is that people go and spend money at many fairs for something fried on a stick.
They had bacon dipped in chocolate on a stick recently. Talk about disgusting. It sounded nasty.

I wouldn’t want fried food as it’s bad for you in general.
Not meaning any of the health nut stuff but it is a fact that fried food is not good for one’s body in general.
I would say to bake not fry any day with that. How does someone really taste the food when it’s covered in some fried batter? It isn’t appealing to eat that way.

  306. Wonderful! Just yesterday I waited in line behind a 300 lb. woman for 20 minutes, because she couldn’t decide what she wanted a the local Dairy Queen.I finally got aggravated and told her”Lady, just pick something! You don’t need it anyway!’Hate to be rude, but Jeez! Yes,this is something we all need in our already “Fat-free” over indulged lives.SO…Whose going to try it first?

  308. That is really gross. peolpe compare it to things like cotton candy and fried icecream, even funnel cake. funnel cake=fried panckae, you eat pancakes. fried icecream=icecream, you eat ice cream. fried butter=butter, you don’y just eat butter, with toast you do, but not a stick, not straight up.

    Eww.

  309. You want to hear something just as bad, if not worse, than deep fried butter?

This year at the Wisconsin State Fair, they had… Chocolate Covered Bacon.

No, I’m not even joking. And yes, it was a smash hit. I was so nauseated by watching my boyfriend try it that I was forced to forgo my once-a-year cream puff.

  310. That’s really common in the south. They deep fry anything and everything. It’s just the thing to do in the south. People need to stop being so ignorant. I’m originally from the north and it’s taken me a minute to get used to southern living but I have learned to accept the different ways of living within our own country. Think before you (blog poster included) make ignorant comments about others ways of life. So what if someone likes to eat something deep fried? Who are you to judge others? What people do is their own business and not yours. Therefore, your opinion doesn’t matter.

  320. ok.so maybe deep fried butter is a little extreme.
    but hey.this is america.
[ as stated before in another comment]
we eat fried ice cream in some mexican restaurants
yeahh. most fried thinqs are a heart attack/cloged artery waiting to happen.
but so is most things we eat here.
ok we eat hot dogs;; yeahh they have pig snouts.
    and we eat maruchan instant soups;;
the shrimp ones dont have shrimp. THEY HAVE CHICKEN TOES.
and even though it’s unhealthy and unsanitary.
we still eat it because ..well its pretty damn good.
    anyways.
like iSaid. most of the things mentioned up there are pretty extreeme.
and even though idont know why you would fry a pepsi
    that’s how people eat.

    ps:;
for the people saying how gross that is and how they’re on a vegiterian diet.

vegitarian doesnt mean you eat healthy
it just means you dont eat meat.
    so yeahh.
deep fried oreos, cookie dough, and deep fried penut butter cups are on your diet as well

    yeahh. burn:)

    haha well ayways.

  324. Its funny… Ice cream is made from cream, with just about the same amount of fat. In our minds butter is salty, but of course it can be sweet…. why not.

I however will be the last one to ever try such a treat. I think that would be half of the average persons calorie count in one fail swoop. Every thing is bigger in Texas, and now the butts can be as well……

  330. Just had deep fried butter at the fair. I was interviewed afterwards and I said it tasted kind of like fried cheese i.e. mozzarella sticks. I don’t think this will ruin my six pack, however most people posting think I will turn morbidly obese overnight. Its the people who eat fastfood 7 days a week that have a problem.

The real problem are the subsidies given to our farmer’s making food cheaper than it should be. The dollar menu wouldn’t exist if we were paying efficient market prices for our food. The enemy here is the ag industry that bought up smalls farms yet lobbies to keep the farm subsidies that were designed to help family farmers out in years of varying economic turmoils to keep them from going bankrupt in a bad year. Not to continue to line their pockets and give more money to executives.

  331. I have never really eaten anything deep-fried I am afraid to admit but howether I think that by the end of this year, everything will be deep fried, literally. You won’t be able to walk into a super-market without bumping into something thats ’starchy’ and full of ‘fatty’ goodness. It’s just a perfect example of how the economy is taking a great downfall, so much in fact that there resulting to making ‘deep fried butter’ in a desperate, sad attempt to earn a few more bucks. Everyone talks about eating healthy, but they keep bringing this junk out. Why is this? That is the question that noone can answer, it’s just the way things are in the world that we live in and theres nothing we can do about it.

Howether, there may be nothing we can do about it but I would stay clear of these ‘deep fried butter’ thingy’s for all hells sake, not just because its disgusting but eating just one would probably send you off on a stretcher to your nearest hospital…

  332. I agree, I don’t go out of my way to eat healthy when I go to fairs or carnivals (which is like never, but still.) But deep-fried butter? Ew. I remember thinking how bad deep-fried oreos sounded, but deep-fried butter…

  333. Right on! I went to the fair this summer to find all of these deep fried foods on a stick: twinkies, pickles, cheesecake, etc.

Although I was curious, I couldn’t bring myself to buy a heart attack on a stick.

  334. By now, we should all know that fried foods are not good for us, especially our sweet little hearts. Why do we even fry our foods? There are so many other alternatives. Fried foods don’t taste any better than broiled or baked foods.

For instance, take a piece of fish. Put it in a pan. Put light seasonings over it and one teaspoonful of olive oil on top and bake it for ten minutes. Take the same piece of fish and fry it. I guarantee that the baked piece of fish will taste better.

Another good way to cook your food is to broil it if you don’t own an oven. Marinate the same piece of fish. Add one garlic cloves, crushed; one teaspoonful of lemon juice; two teaspoon dijon mustard; one red pepper, slice; one tomato chopped; one cup chopped onion; one small zucchini chopped; three spoonful of water, one teaspoon of olive oil. Cook over medium heat 8-10 minutes. Pour over your rice and beans. “Yummylicious,”

  335. I hardly think the author or this article is “making a huge fuss” or going overboard. They’ve simply stated that they have an opinion: deep fried butter is gross.

They haven’t started a petition, they haven’t spammed anyone (as far as I know), they haven’t posted huge signs or anything else and they certainly didn’t do this for the attention. They did it because they wanted to, plain and simple. If they did it for the attention we would be seeing them all over the place and not just on this blog.

Also, why would you eat a stick of flavored butter? I have no idea but I don’t think I’d pay to try it (and try it is all I’d do). There have been far worse, that’s for sure…
