I think I may have stumbled on to a solution for texting while driving!

"SMS Replier allows the user to comfortably focus on operating their vehicle and know that any callers or text messages that are inbound, will not go unanswered. Instead, their inbound contact has been answered with a responsible message that the recipient is driving and will contact them in the near future. SMS Replier, by utilizing the phones onboard GPS systems, is able to identify if the phone is traveling at a speed greater than 15 miles per hour. If the user is driving, a message is sent. If the user is not traveling, the message is not sent. If the mobile phone is in the possession of a passenger in another’s vehicle or in public transportation, the passenger can disable the Auto Reply system. Visit us at smsreplier.com"

This seems like a great idea!

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 6,000 people died in crashes involving distracted driving in 2008.

Folks, that's more than 2 World Trade Center tragedies. Soon, there will be another letter added to DUI which will be DUIT or "driving under the influence of texting- but please don't duit.

i think the cell phone companies need to step up and cut it from sending if your moving by seeing your gps is moving.making you not get texts or send while moving.im not saying while walking etc. they can see your moving in miles.texting is not a form of style its way to talk with someone without calling.it has taken the personal input we need and killed interaction with real people.i have seen kids texting someone next to them is that lazy or what

December 2009
Mr. James A. Tosto

Texting While Driving

Texting while driving is so dangerous because it takes both of your eyes and for the most part both of your hands to do and when you are driving, you cannot afford to take your eyes off of the road. Also using your cell phone in general requires a large amount of your concentration. Texting while driving is becoming more dangerous than driving while you are drunk, yet there aren’t any universal laws that prohibit the deadly action. More people are killed in car accidents that are caused by a driver using his or her cell phone than any other distraction. The only way that we can try to control texting while driving related deaths and accidents is to come up with laws against it that are enforced in every state, county, and city.

Every state has some kind of law that ensures if you get behind the wheel of a vehicle with you blood alcohol level or a designated amount, you will be penalized and the consequences will be harsh. Only nineteen states have a law that forbids a cell phone in a certain situation while you are driving, not all situations only certain ones with certain requirements. Only six states have laws that prohibit the use of a cellular phone in every way while driving, and not coincidentally, these states have the lowest number of accidents and deaths cause by the use of cell phones.

How else can we try to put an end to this? Well the main age group that participates in this activity is teenagers, and the biggest influence on teenagers is their parents. Parents are responsible for putting the fear into these kids so that they will not want to do it anymore. It is a proven fact that kids who believe that their parents will follow through with punishments are more likely to stop the infractions then those who do not think their parents will follow through. Also it has been proven that parents are in fact the biggest influences on teenagers, not their school or their friends. Parents need to not be afraid to talk to their kids because they will make a difference.

Overall, we all need to address this issue as a whole. One day there will be laws that prevent texting while driving and hopefully eventually using your cell phone in general, but until that day we all have to help the cause. There is something that each and every one of us can do to help with the prevention of texting while driving, like we can all spread the word; tell your friends, children, parents, colleagues or even someone you just met on the street.

Like the person asking the question in the link says, there are already so many distractions while driving. Using them to distract the reader from the fact that texting or talking while driving is an additional distraction is a straw man defense. What happens when you have one ore more of those distractions present already and then you start texting? If you have enough distractions already, why would you add another one?

What's more, even if you don't look at the keys, you still have to put your mind on the keyboard to text. It's bad enough that just talking on the phone takes your mind off the road. Talking in general, regardless of where your conversation partner is, takes some of your mind away from being able to control your vehicle.

And talking on a cellphone while driving cuts off some of your peripheral vision and limits your body movements. Whereas you could just use your head to look to the side, with a phone to your ear you have to move a larger portion of your body to kee the phone there while looking. Talking or texting wile driving also reduces the number of hands you have available to control your vehicle by half! Or more!

Do us all a favor: Pull over to the shoulder or into a parking lot to text. And at the very least, wear a headset or use speakerphone while talking.

There is a new program out for Blackberries called Auto TextBak. you can google it. It lets drivers but up an away message on their phone - so when they receive a text message, the program automatically sends a text back explaining that they are busy. I think it will help save lives.
