“Project Runway”—are you in or out?

That’s right! After months of waiting, “Project Runway” is back on TV! Sure, there was a heated legal battle over which TV network would find the next up-and-coming designer. But I saw on a bus ad during my morning commute that the new season debuts tonight on Lifetime. If, like me, you’ve been so desperate for your fashion fix that you watched “The Fashion Show” on Bravo, you’ve probably been waiting on pins and needles (pardon the pun) for the return of “Project Runway.”

This might be a controversial statement (and I have all the respect in the world for Isaac Mizrahi), but I thought that “The Fashion Show” was a poor knockoff. I found the judge’s comments to the contestants in the workroom to be snarky and not constructive, and the contestants’ talents to be of a lower caliber than the bar that “Project Runway” set. And don’t even get me started on letting the viewers choose the winner. I say leave fashion to the professionals, and let us pick the fan favorite.

It’s a bummer about “The Fashion Show,” because Bravo usually hits the mark with their “professional” reality shows, like “Top Chef,” “Shear Genius,” and (formerly) “Project Runway.” What I like best about these shows is that the contestants are super-talented, and the producers are not casting the dregs of the respective industries to claw and connive their way to the prize. It warms the cockles of my hard, cynical heart to see the competitors helping each other out. When everyone brings their A game, the victory is all the sweeter, and you learn what the competitors are really made of.

If you ask me, “Project Runway” is the upside of reality TV. Every week, I’m baffled by challenges like making clothes out of car parts, or a pair of jeans, or with items bought at a grocery store. Given the time, money, and material constraints, I’m always thinking, “There’s no way I could ever do this!” The talent is staggering. Where else on TV can you find a rockin’ dress made of plastic drinking cups, an evening gown using human hair as an accent, or a catch phrase to rival Christian Siriano’s trademark “Fierce!”?

What is your favorite “Project Runway” moment?

  4. I’m IN! Honestly, if the show remains the same, I don’t care what channel I get to watch it in. And your right, I barely watch any T.V., but Project Runway is one of the few shows that I actually watch.

  9. My favorite episode was the one where they had to re-design the postal delivery uniform! I loved that they had to design for real people, with normal bodies, and that they got to see what the job was like before coming up with a design. And then, the fact that Austin filled in for Jay’s model was just priceless! He fit the outfit perfectly, and showed such good grace in being willing to do that! What a trooper! I loved the entire episode!

  11. I loved (past tense) Project Runway. But the minute I become so desperate to watch a TV show, that I am willing to watch a crap channel like life time is the day I take a dirt nap.

    I’m done with Project Runway.

  12. Oh, so many moments to choose from….. I think my favorite moments are the “Bryant Park” collections. For weeks, months, we’ve rooted for (or against, ahem, Kenley) contestants – and then, there they are, showing their amazing (or not) works of art. While I don’t always agree with the winner of each season, I honestly shed tears to see the winner acheive that moment, to see that dream come true. All I can say is it has been a long wait, enduring the “Fashion Show” and its attempt to acheive that “Project Runway” level, and failing miserably. Welcome back, Heidi, Tim, Michael, and Nina. You have been missed beyond words (good tv is so hard to find), watched bad knockoff shows (decent talent is so hard to find, no matter what Merlin says) – and for that 60 minutes each week, we again get to see clothes created from air filters, trash, for drag queens, based on plants or animals or whatever. I AM SOOO GLAD YOU’RE BACK!!!

  13. my favorite moments were from last season.

blaine and stella were just so comic and hilarious with their sayings. and i esp. loved the drag queen episode, with head of lettuce being so mean lmao

  14. All I can say is MAKE IT WORK! MAKE IT WORK!! I love love love the show. And Bravo! You lost a BIG BIG many maker! I’m just so glad that Lifetime picked it up!! There goes the ratings from Bravo down the drain! Make it work Lifetime channel!! And welcome back Project Runway! You have been so missed!!! I never ever miss a episode!!!

  15. Never watched it; no intention of doing so. I have important things to do, you know, like straightening my sock drawer or something.

How can anybody be this shallow and still breathe?

  16. I love PR when it was on BRAVO. I just cannot get the bad taste in my mouth that it has now moved on to the Lifetime Channel (the channel known for their cheezy women stalker movies of the week).

  17. Project Runway Rocks. I’ll miss the grittiness of the New York streets, but wherever it is, I’ll watch it as long and Heidi and Tim are still there.

  18. YES YES! finally someone who agrees with me! the fashoin is a poor knockoff of the project runaway. the judges sucked so much that i couldn’t even listen to what they’re talking about or about they’re criticism. the designers sucked also, i mean there was no competition and no individual talent. and omg, i don’t even want to talk about the chosen winner for the fashion show. who the hell is voting?? ughhh…

but anyways, yeah. i am so excited for project runway. BUT i really wanted it to be on bravo. i mean, i googled how project runway became on lifetime and that’s just bullshit. look it up and you’ll see what im talking about! >:[

ANDD, theyre doing the a new show after the premire of project runway called ‘models on the runway.’ it’s basically about the models that are paired up with the designers on project runway; its basically they’re life behind the scenes, lol.
i mean, i like that idea and all… but i don’t really care about the models. all they do is sit around, put on makeup, and walk the runway. they don’t even do anything — other than screw up the designer if they don’t show up (i hate that.) besides, i have america’s next top model. idk, i just think it’s stupid, i don’t really care about them. lol.

    what do you think?

  20. I found this post to be in poor taste. If the show is so great you should not have to resort to negativity and comparison to another.

There is no reality in reality TV. The only reality is that it is a total waste of time and it has put thousands of talented actors out of work.

  25. I love this show!! I would love to have the nerve to try out for it. I have the ideas.. just not the sewing skills.Too bad! I sit with a sketch pad each week and com e up with my own designs and share them with my husband. It makes me feel like I”m part of the fun!
I love the real challenges where they have to design for real people, like the women who lost so much weight and things like that. But Santino’s impression of Tim is priceless!! Wow.. spot on!!
The Fashion Show?? it wasn’t good…but it was entertaining! LOL I couldn’t help but laugh at some of those people. I mean, seriously, where did they even dig up Merlin?? HELLO? talk about a fruit loop.. lol But some of the stuff was interesting and I esp. enjoyed the mini-challenges. I thought they demanded creativity and quick thinking. I liked that .

  29. I love Project Runway! I watched the Fashion Show on Bravo and thought it was a very cheap imitation of Project Runway. Some of the designers could barely sew!

Last night’s episode was great! The regular one, not the All Star one. The All Star one just showed how arrogant the past designers have gotten.

The regular show this season is based in LA. They probably wanted more celebrity judges which they could get in LA more easily. Can’t wait for next week’s show!

  30. Tim Gunn is my favorite. I love his own trademark Carry on! or Make it work!

I’ve never before been into fashion much… Then I tuned into PR and fell in love with the show. The people are so creative. I am very envious.

  31. I agree with Irene: seasons two and three FTW. Seeing the All-Stars Challenge filled me with glee. They spoiled us lining up so many talented previous contestants.

My favorite episode? The one that’s always stuck with me, for some reason, is the season two episode where they had to construct dresses out of plants and flowers. That was the first episode that wowed me. Poor Andrae…

  32. I watched the first episode of the new season on Lifetime, and it rocked. I’m glad it’s back to shake off the end-of-summer-rerun boredom.

And you are right, will all due respect to Mizrahi, ‘The Fashion Show’ wasn’t even as entertaining as RuPaul’s Drag Race.

  35. I have been waiting so long for PR to come back!!! I mean, no other show that has been on even compares! The move to L.A was not a real big deal and after last night I know it is going to be as good a show as it has always been! I love this show and to all naysayers, try it once and you’ll be hooked or at least get where people are coming from when they say they love it!! Even if you dont get IT, I know there are always going to be non-watchers. There are TONS of fans though so I know I am not going to be the only person glued to the t.v screen Thursday nights! Last night Premiere was so awesome and L.A and FIDM just added to PR! I was thinking of applying to the school in the fall which is sooo cool! love love love.

  36. I watched Project Runway for maybe 2 seasons, didn’t think the designers picked as top were very creative, and stopped watching. I don’t like these reality shows much. I have watched Top Chef a few times, mostly because that is a competition between well-known chefs–I just wish they had smellovision and tastearama (whatever). I wish they’d create a channel just for these types of reality shows so they’d get off my tv.

  37. My favorite moment is when they had to make dresses using candy from the Hershey store. That dress made out of red licorice was the bomb and totally wearable. Unless you say something, who would know it was edible? They do have some very talented people on that show.

  44. I love the new Project Runway and I am so happy they are finally back. I wish that they would continue to have former contestents compete every week. I watched the whole thing twice.
The only good thing about the Fashion Show was Isaac Mizrahi. The Fashion Show seemed like a low budget production they threw together out of old bits and pieces, left overs from other shows.

  45. I absolutely love Project Runway, which is shocking because I don’t like TV really and hardly ever watch it. I’ve seen a couple of seasons of this show in the past, and I’m really glad to hear about a new season!

My favorite moment? Santino. Santino everything. When he imitated Tim especially. Loved Santino.

  46. I’m loving Christopher Strab, this season. Although I don’t think that Ari should’ve gone home, I think that the Perez Hilton-lookalike did a terrible job and he should’ve gotten the boot.
But PR is one of the few shows that I will watch on television these days.
