Still raining? Still pouring?

As I’m sitting here, dampened by yet another rainy day in the middle of July, I can’t help but wonder what the heck is going on with the weather? This summer has been particularly strange, at least here in New York. We’ve always had the occasional summer thunderstorm, but this year it feels like we’ve been under a constant deluge since spring. I’m exaggerating of course, but I think we’ve certainly had more than our fair share of rain thus far. And according to the forecast, there’s plenty more sogginess to look forward to in the coming days.

With all the talk of global warming and people’s deleterious effect on the environment, the paranoid in me is getting riled up. I wonder whether this is just part of the natural cycle of weather patterns or if this is an indication of something worse. I’ve recently read that that El Niño is on its way. Could that have something to do with this infernal soaking? How will El Niño affect weather in various parts of the country in the coming months? What is El Niño anyway? There must be some weather-head Answers users out there to help me figure this out!

First, I guess I need to figure out exactly what El Niño is. For that, I turn to retired research meteorologist 1ofSelby’s, who has answered quite a few questions in the Weather section. His explanation is too detailed to reproduce here, but check out his answer to gain a better understanding of El Niño and how it differs from La Niña. Answers user uni-verse further helps us understand the mechanics of how El Niño and La Niña episodes are caused by ocean currents and global weather patterns.

As for the positive and negative effects of El Niño, both ridonculous and DustinDawind offer some interesting answers in response to that exact question posed by Ty. Matt answers a very similar question, focusing on how El Niño specifically affects the Atlantic hurricane season, a subject of particular importance in my region. I’ve learned that El Niño can be especially dangerous on the West Coast, in particular California, so for more on that I turn to our current top answerer in the weather section, cyswxman, who assures us that Southern California is probably in for an especially wet winter.

Thanks to all of these wise and informed weather experts, I can safely say that this irritating rain is probably just part of New York’s natural weather cycle and not indicative of anything more worrisome. I also have a clearer understanding of El Niño and La Niña events and realize that they are also just part of earth’s natural weather cycle. I guess I can safely lay my paranoid fears aside. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to run to the hardware store to buy some wood for my ark.

Have you been experiencing any unusual weather where you live? And how do you think this year’s El Niño will affect your area in the coming months?

  2. Agreed, the weather here in NYC has been terrible all summer. Feels like we got screwed out of the best season this year.

  3. Hopefully El Nino will bring more rain here in Texas. It hasn’t rained much this summer at all and things are getting dry. It only has rained once, and it happened to be on the day that we decided to go to Six Flags (a theme park). That was pretty lame. Hope things clear up for you in NY!

  4. i live in New Jersey; the weather’s been similar here too. June was recorded as literally the wettest month in state history! :-o It got to the point where if the sun came up (even for a few hours), i joking said to my friends how i was worried that the weather was acting so strangely (in how the sun was actually out). Quite frankly, it *has* been raining constantly since spring!

And i also noticed the temperature overall this summer has been lower than usual. Last year in July…we had a bad draught. This year…there have been literally a handful of times where the temperature broke into the 90′s… … and earlier this year in March … April…it actually did break into the 90′s….i even remember back in January some very abnormally mild days. … i feel like we’re not even in the summer season…i’ve jokingly asked my friends what summer was, being that the temperature and weather has been acting so strangly.

Have you noticed too? —the lack of hurricaines? (sorry if i misspelled that) i’ve taken notice to that very much so…last year … there was such a ridiculous amount of hurricaine activity during the summer…this year…i just recently heard talks of what i think is the first tropical storm we’ve had this entire summer! This same applies to tornadoe activity in the Midwest. Yes, there obviously has been activity, but again, not like last year. No wildfires out in California…(though a good thing, a lot of times those are a result of severe weather patterns).

i have no clue what kinds of affects El Nino will have on us…i’ve never seen such strange weather activity/patterns before. Perhaps this is the calm before the storm? (no pun intended)

i don’t necessarily believe in global warming, per se, but i do believe there is certiainly something going on that’s causing this abnormal weather.

  6. hey,
    i’m an overseas militery brat.
my family and i were sent here in england in the summer of ’07 because of my dad’s job in the US AIR FORCE.
when we moved here, the summer was alright,
i mean for england. so was last year, not as much rain as there usually is in this god forssaken place :)

but this summer, its been pouring and storming like no other. even worse than during winter.
last year, at the end of april it snowed etremely hard here..

so yeah, i have no clue whats going on, but it is annoying. im trying to enjoy my summer, dammit(:

  8. i live near Chicago and its been cold and rainy here too. i don’t think its as bad as New York but it has only been sunny for a couple of days these passed weeks. i don’t mind the cloudy-ness and rain but most people around here like it to be around 85 degrees and sunny, not 70 degrees and cloudy/rainy.

  10. In California right now it feels like the desert of Arizona and Vegas. Last year at this time I don’t remember it being this hot. I happen to love rain though, so I wouldn’t mind being in New York.

  11. I live in northern Maryland and we’ve actually had a pretty dry summer so far. It didn’t rain for almost 2 weeks and the temperature has been unusually mild and comfortable.

Also, has anyone noticed the inactivity of the Atlantic hurricane season? We’ve only had one Tropical Depression back in late May and by this time last year we had already used up hurricane names up to the letter “D”.

  14. I understand what you mean. Here in mid May we had a devastating flood, so much more rain than we have had in this area for a long time; and right now we are experiencing low temps in the upper forties and low fifities. Its weird! I have also heard there are countries and states here in the US that have never seen the northern lights that are now experiencing this phenomena.

  20. I’ve heard a few scientist talking about low solar activity and how if it keeps up we may be heading for what’s known as a little ice age. The Global warming talk is nonsense, it’s just an excuse to add more control and laws to our society.

Throughout history (Well as long as they’ve been studying the sun) it has been noticed that during times of low activity the overall temperatures have been much lower. There is also more precipitation.

Seeing as this weather pattern has been occurring for several years now I suspect there is something to it.

  21. In Upstate New York not only has it been raining non-stop, but it’s been cold too :-( So much for summer’s brief reprieve from the terrible winters. I know I read or heard somewhere that we are “due” for another mini-ice age in the great pattern of global climate changes. I think it happens every 10,000 years or so and now it’s been about 10,000 years since the Earth last had an ice age. Of course, we are also due for an eruption from the supervolcano under Yellowstone Park (every 600,000 years or so). And then with “global warming” and “el nino,” who knows that the weather is doing!

  23. You guy’s are lucky. Here in Texas, we’re in one of the worst droughts in recorded history(at least here in Austin). The lakes are down, and the plants are dying. It’s only rained about 3 times this summer, and those were very minuscule showers.

  27. We’re going through such a drought in East Texas that I wish it would rain all summer. It’s hot and terrible, with no rain to cool us off. Yesterday it sprinkled, today it clouded up and thundered, but that’s about it. Send some of that rain down here!

  31. I live in North Dakota, a place where we’ve had semi-drought for the past 14+ years. I live near Laka Sacagawea, and the lake is up 20+ feet, more than it has been in at least 20 years, possibly more than 30! Also, our winter was exceptionally wet, and substantial amounts of rain has fallen this spring and summer more than I can ever remember. We’re not even remotely near an ocean, yet it’s still affecting us…

  49. I live in Massachusetts and its been really rainy here too though tomorros supposed to be sorta nice.

Last night the rain was POURING, it wasn’t even individual rain drops, it was as if someone just poured a giant bucket of water from the sky. it was just like sheets of water.
We had to use a pump in our basement to keep our basement from flooding (again).

I like rain, that was just rediculous though.

  51. Yes, here in NH, the same dreary, very cool, very wet weather has been the norm. Interestingly enough, with our past few frigid winters and cool summers, the global warming hysteria seems to have completely lost its media attention. I feel the earth is a to huge of a gigantic ecosystem which we limited knowledge humans are presumptuous in thinking we have the ability to correctly predict its trends or change the planet’s weather. People forget, global warming is unprovable “theory,” and fluctuations in temps over the years seem natural.

  56. The summers in upstate NY are resembling Pacific Northwest summers by virtue of their raininess. I’ve noticed the reptiles are doing well; frogs, toads, turtles and snakes are getting numerous here and therein is the silver lining. These critters are my favorites!

I did hear that global warming would cause large areas of the northern US to become like the Pacific NW. And now an el nino is coming? Well it seems the prediction is holding true for the NE US.

  79. I am in Indiana, and here it has been VERY strange. If you have ever visited, you would know the weather changes all the time here, but lately it has been drastic. Last year in June, we had 10 inches of rain in 2 days which led to severe flooding and power outages, even in hospitals. But this year, there is very little rain, if any at all, in most parts of the state. To me, it is an indication of cooler temperatures of the equatorial belt, which would lead to less rain in the jet stream… I am a little worried… I think the lack of sun spots is beginning to mean something ominous.

  82. We’ve had a drought since Mid may. And I live in Washington state. Only one day of measurable rain n that time, so I guess the east coast got our rain. We had a record setting snow fall this winter. The dry spell is also records setting.

I feel like I”m back in SoCal again. Supposed to be 90 all week. I’m trying to get away from that kind of weather.

Global warming is a misnomer. What it really refers to is massive climate change due to pollution and other man made activities.

  114. I was watching the Weather Channel a couple weeks ago, and a meteorologist says the jet stream, which controls all weather patterns, is “stuck”, and will be for some time. It’s why it rained everyday here on the East Coast (specifically, DC in my case), and why we’ve had unseasonably pleasant temps in July, but hellish temps in the Midwest, South, and Southwest. They brought this up because an El Nino is forming in the Pacific, and when fully formed, it will break the jet stream out of the holding pattern it currently has us in. It happened in 1998. Living in Dallas was hell that summer.

  115. Hey, I feel for you. Rain and thunder, and glum days in general are awful when it should be sunny.
But you should send some up to BC. We have so many large forest fires raging right now due to dry, hot weather that firefighters are being shipped in by the hundreds from outside the province to help fight them. So stop being water-greedy and cough it up :P

But you’re right, the weather these days is odd. Shorter, wetter winters with less snow…above average heat here, above average thunderstorms there. Makes you wonder…

During my high school days, Summer used to be in July and August, when the temperature rose up to 51 and 52 degrees. And the winter started by mid October and lasted till January. In recent years, i really felt the shift in climate when the summer heat lasts till October, and last year it was there till November. And the winter started in December, lasted till mid April. I dont know exzctly the reason for Climate shift, but i know its happening!!

  130. Rain is good. It won’t destroy, except ruin your perfect sunny day. In fact we all need rain, also other countries with drought need rain, in which all they get is sun.

They would pray to have this kind of weather. Rain is good. If you are not grateful for this weather hopefully other countries can have rain. London has rain all the time and I am sure many places in Europe and it is soooooo beautiful there, and I do not hear them complain.

  131. Rain? Send some down south please! We are suffering drought conditions and extreme heat. During the month of June, temps broke historical record highs several days running. Nearly the entire month of June, we had temps in the mid to upper 90s, and several days were over 100. We broke a few historical records with some 105 degree days…in June! It has never been so hot for so long, so early in the year, in my lifetime.

It has been very cloudy and rainy, sometimes it is cloudy and rainy everyday for like 2 weeks!!!! I was wondering what was going on? 160. This is what we have done to Mother earth. Called Global warming. It is so hot here in Utah? In month of June we had so much rainfall, much than we ever had before. That was wonderful . Now its been stinchy hot and unbearable to go outside. Most days we run our AC units. I think we need to re-think our transportation system. Our out put on emission into our enviornment. Our useage of chemicals and other things that have harmed our earth of centuries. The other day there was a show on this subject on Discovery channel. It said there :”If the area of Antarctica and other places would melt down, there would be too much water. And many continents, could be just wipped off this earth by that over flow of water. Imagine that! So let’s stop hurting the earth! Lets be more kind to it.

  166. I live in the Midwest, Wisconsin to be exact. Just north of Milwaukee and we would give our eye teeth for some rain. Every day they call for ‘a chance’. When you ride a Harley, you never know if you should take the bike for a day trip. But we never get the rain!! We need it.

  167. I live here up in Toronto, Canada, which shares the same weather patterns as NYC, I assume. We had an unusually clear, beautiful sunny spring, but for the past two weeks or so, we have rarely seen the sun once….The up side is that we havent had to water our plants once since spring. This is awful though.

  170. its the opposite here. we are way over heated (110). it almost never rains but that just makes it super humid and makes the heat feel worse when it does.

  176. Edited: i beg to differ, i live in ct yea june was very inconsistent especially in the middle but hey this is new england june is always up in the air but july has been great weather one of the best july’s i think…to me it’s going to be a later summer than usual, there is still August coming up and September. I think people are still stuck on what happened in june and forgot to just enjoy the weather. The rain will happen from time to time really people should stop whining because in reality they are probably the same people when the weather is nice out and do not take advantage of it. Today almost reached 90, but i guess people will complain its too hot now

  178. Assuming you live in the city, you should consider yourself lucky, with the exception of tonight, due to the power outages and falling trees, that you don’t live in upstate NY. I’m in the middle of the mountains and mt mother and I are convinced that it’s going to rain everyday until the end of time. I’m from up by Hunter Mountain/Zoom Flume [local tourist attractions, you probably have heard of at least one] and it has been rain, and clouds every freaking day, allllll day. It sucks. But I’m trying to also keep my chin up by saying to everyone that “You can’t have a rainbow without the rain”, but in the literal sense. lol.

  179. Mr. Lagendorf is not kidding! I live in Connecticut and it seemed the whole month of June and into July it rained and this week ( end of July) it’s raining here again! My husband and I waited all winter long for the summer to come, but as soon as summer got here all it did was rain!! Horrible! We barely have a summer here in Connecticut and to have the summer come around and all it does is rain?! It’s maddening! We have only one solution to our problem: move to a state where the weather is warmer all the time. We’re tired of freezing our butts off in Connecticut and being indoors! ~ :(

It’s been drizzling a lot and last Monday it rained for 2-3 hours i was surprised. The weather here has been weird. The newspaper that day said that it hasn’t rained like that since the 70′s.

  185. So sorry to hear you are having so much rain for the summer. I live in NC and the weather here has been fantastic, little humid, but nice for the evenings. The weather in my opinion has been changeing because of all the pollution coming from Mexico, they have no EPA standards, and American businesses have taken advantage of this in Mexico. Also, they have cut the tops off the Mountains in Kentucky for coal minning, which has helped to damage the environment. But, making others very wealthy$. If people don’t get their heads out of the sand and help mother earth, we will eventually be wearing gas mask when we go out side, from no CLEAN AIR!

  186. From what I can tell, most places along the East Coast see more total rain in summer than any other season, but at the same time fewer total clouds.

It can’t stay wet forever. Probably you’ll end up with very hot weather in the fall instead this year. I remember watching the weather in November 2001 when they kept having 70s all the way up to NYC.

Here in Oregon we had a cloudy June but now it’s very hot and dry, and looking to stay the same way at least into September if not October.

  201. We have had an amazing spring and mid-summer here in Maryland. Now I think payday is coming within the month of August through September. We have had rain but it didn’t rain 4th of July which it always does. Not much humidity until the south started pumping its ugly weather this way. So I can’t complain at all.

  205. Michigan’s winter this year had the most snow I’ve ever seen. It was freezing until the beginning of April,, when it finally began to lighten up.

As for rain, we got a lot more in June and May then in July, all things considered July has been pretty high and dry. Which is too bad because I like summer thunderstorms.

  210. Ugh, I know! The weather in Jersey has been absolutely horrible this year. I was so happy to go on vacation and see sunlight! It is really bad this year, I have never seen it rain so much. I guess the only good thing is that it’s warm as opposed to if it was winter and cold, because then all this rain would be snow…and that would be ten times worse!

  216. Canada has it’s own shares of problems, towards the west (vancouver) and up north (Yukon) , (whitehorse) there has been a draught. In the North its been considered unusually hot and actually considered a real summer. When usually its way more cold. Towards the east here in Toronto, it’s been raing like crazy. It’s the new London weather here. People here call the weather as if having it’s “moodswings” One minute there’ll be light raing, the next hard, hard pouring rain that floods the streets, and soaks anything in its path for about houf an hour to an hour. And the next couple of hours the sun will be shining and the weather will feel sticky and humid. All in a day. Latly for the past month it’s been all rain and humidity here in toronto.

  217. I’m from New Jersey, and I agree that this summer has been especially rainy. However, does anyone else think that over the past 5 years, the weather has become increasingly unpredictable all year?

Whatever the case, I’m just thankful that New Jersey only gets annoying weather, and nothing disastrous (except maybe flooding if you live particularly close to a body of water). Between that and the cultural and artistic resources of Philadelphia and NYC, it’s a great reason to stay in the area.
