Ask Mike: Harry Potter vs. Twilight
Hey Guys,
On Wednesday, the sixth “Harry Potter” film hit theaters. Anyone who read J.K. Rowling’s books knows how the story ends. However, that absence of suspense hasn’t stopped the overwhelming excitement. But Harry isn’t the undisputed king of teen lit anymore. Twilight is big and only getting bigger. Over the past several weeks, I’ve noticed a surge in questions on “Harry Potter” vs. “Twilight.”
By my count, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of questions asking which franchise is “better.” Of course, there is no right answer, but that hasn’t stopped many in the Yahoo! Answers community from giving passionate responses.
Alex, a Top Contributor to Yahoo! Answers writes that Twilight is the “worst book” he or she has ever read and compares the novel’s hunky vampire Edward to a “creepy stalker.” Ouch. Additionally, Alex argues that the characters in Harry Potter have a backstory and a unique personality in contrast to the stars of Twilight, who are “one dimensional.”
Of course, not everyone agrees with Alex’s assessment. For example, Yahoo! Answers member “Doctor Orange!” feels that Twilight is “more realistic” (presumably, that’s a good thing). Another responder writes that while it may be true that many readers enjoy the Twilight books because Edward is an amazingly handsome fella, the real reason for Twilight’s popularity has to do with the way the author lets readers into the mind of the narrator, a conflicted young woman.
Most literature experts, including Stephen King, argue that J.K. Rowling is far and away the superior writer. What do you guys think? Do you prefer one franchise to the other? Or is the whole debate like comparing apples and bowling balls (i.e, totally pointless)? Leave a comment below.

Twilight is more realistic? Like hell it is. What idiot wrote that?
Harry Potter, no competion
I’ve heard the “one dimensional” aspect from many different people, but I have yet to touch the Twilight series, so I can’t fairly comment on it. I can say that the Harry Potter series was one of the best I’ve read – Artemis Fowl around the same level.
TWILIGHT FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course Harry Potter is better. There is elements scattered in that make it more than just a fantasy novel, but a study on human character. However, with twilight, its about a girl who’s so in love all she does is live for her man. After he dumps her, shes almost catatonic for 6 months. Then she dies for him? Puts up with a whole lotta bs just so he can direct her life in the way he wishes? What kind of role model is that?!
I think that J.K Rowling and Stephenie Meyer are equally amazing writers, but the Twilight series I liked far better than the Harry Potter. Twilight is captivating, draws you in, and suspenseful. Harry Potter was so boring and predictable that by the fourth book I had to quit. I’m not saying that J.K Rowling isn’t a good writer, I believe she is, but I just didn’t like the story that she put together. I also think that 70% of people who say that Twilight is only popular because it has a hot vampire and a love story involved haven’t read the book. My evidence is that I’ve read Stephenie Meyer’s other book, The Host, and the writing is just as perfect and the stories completely different. So in my opinion, Twilight vs. Harry Potter, Twilight would win.
An avid fan of both series, I don’t understand why people feel as though they need to compare the two. They’re so completely different, that there is really nothing to compare, other than their massive popularity. Even the writing styles of the two authors land on opposite ends of the spectrum. While Harry Potter is a very character driven story, advancing its plot through their experiences and direct emotions, Twilight focuses strongly on plot and setting, developing its characters through the events which take place, rather than the other way around. Deciding which story is “better literature” or “more relevant” seems fruitless to me. As far as I’m concerned, I’m going to enjoy two of my favorite series for what they are, rather than fight to make one better than the other.
I’ve read them both and I LOVE them equally.
Right now my obessesion is Twilight. But since I’m going to reread the HP books in preparation HBP movie, that will become my new obsession.
It tends to change lol.
I agree with Stephen King, JK Rowling is by far, no questions asked the superior writer. I read the Twilight Series, they were good but not amazingly exciting and phenomenal like the Harry Potter Series. Rowling’s style is more complex, descriptive and the charactars have a background not like the characters in Twilight. Yes, others will argue that Twilight is more realistic, but overall it’s still a fiction based story on vampires. Harry Potter is a completley different genre well written that lures you to read more as you can envision the world that JK Rowling created. I would disagree with others who say there is not reality to Harry Potter. It’s a magical world but we get to see the characters develop through their years at hogwarts and relate to the internal complexities and social interactions and situations they face aside from wizardry school. I believe Harry Potter has more perspective and written better.
You can’t even compare Twilight to Harry Potter. Harry Potter earns more money in its opening weekend than Twilight earns in a month in theaters. Twilight is way too predictable, too.
Seriously, harry potter its better. it gots everything . unlike twiligh ( that crap has romance and barely horrors.) if you compare everything harry is better
It’s cool to compare them, but pretty pointless. Compare and contrast: Compare-Both reach out to all ages and types of people, mystical happenings are involved, some action and some love story are in both. Contrast-Harry Potter, although with love scenes, is all about the action, whereas Twilight is all about the love story. So, basically, we’re comparing an action movie to a chic flic. Now, on a personal note, me myself, I love Twilight and cannot wait til the next movie comes out, even though the 2nd was the slowest of the four books. However, Harry Potter will always be my favorite between the two. Now all I’m waiting for is a series comparable to these two but with a much better and wittier ending! (PS, did anyone else hear that J.K. Rowling feiry dusted her ending because parents were complaining about the dark vitality?)
HP is imaginative, witty, and beautifully written. All types of people at every age enjoys the series. Twilight is VERY predictable and poorly written. HP will live on and stay a masterpiece, and Twilight will disappear along with the other crappy teenage romance stories.
I personally think that Harry Potter is a way better movie than Twilight! I mean Twilight was good in all, but Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a lot better!
OMG how are you supposed 2 decide! I have liked them both frum the very start nd am totally obsessed.. seriously ask me any question about either one and I could tell u the answer!! x
I believe that there is no “better” franchise. All true Twilight fans should know that Robert Pattinson – the hunk who plays Edward Cullen – got his start in two of the Harry Potter films. In fact, Rob tributes his humble attitude to observing the cast of Harry Potter. Granted, I’ll admit that I’m much more of a Twilight fan, and that I believe that Twilight’s storyline is much more relatable, but they are both incredible books-turned-movies written by incredible authors.
Harry Potter will live on forever! Twilight SUCKS.
This is the worlds stupidest blog. Really there is no doubt that Harry Potter is better than twilight, and for those who say Twilight is better is delucional…. The charectors in Twilight are one demensional. PERFECT MARY/GARY SUES!!!!
Edward is a creepy stalker. Jacob is a pedophile. Bell is whiny and annoying ,and needs sex just to make her life exciting……. The best charector in it is probably roasali cullen…… But i still think she is terrible…. Terribly written.
In my opinion Harry Potter beats Twilight by a mile. First off, Harry Potter is well written, has a good balance of romance and action and the fantasy many people love to read. As a writer myself I see Twilight as a very poor book, it only caters to those who are into the mushy romance, while everyone else (like me) find it repetitive and, frankly, stupid. Harry Potter caters to a wider range of people, and is one of the greatest books in history. No Twilight will ever achieve what Harry Potter has done for the world.
I’d have to say that although many people lump both series together, the two series offer different reading (but are both undisputably great books, in my opinion).
Harry Potter is well-written, with countless plot twists and turns, very dynamic, developed characters (who may seem excessive and confusing, but who actually almost all end up tying into the story in more ways than one) and offers more in the way of adventure and overall story, I feel.
Twilight is also a great series, but Stephenie Meyer focuses more on portraying the characters’ thoughts and emotions (thankfully, otherwise the books would be complete disasters) and less on “action.” I for one, as a teenage girl, feel she does a great job of writing about the emotions and thought processes of teenage girls (through Bella).
There are some people who say they will never read Twilight but I know many people (and I am included in that category) who didn’t even hear of the book till a year or more after it had been out, did not feel compelled to read the book, and are now in love with the series. What I think fans of both/either series forget is that Harry Potter had time to gain a good following long before Twilight, and that there are still people who (idiotically, I think) stubbornly refuse to give the Harry Potter series a chance.
Overall, I think both series are incredibly imaginative and creative, offer good, relatable (that is, if you imagine your life in a world where magic is possible or where vampires and werewolves exist) characters and conversation, and are really great books.
I personally think Harry Potter is the significant novel here. Comparing it to Twilight is like compairing manure to gold. Twilight is the kind of cheap porn-filled novella you buy at the airport. It makes open references to sexual activity and foreplay, which seems to please many of Twilight fans. Harry Potter has none of that, and yet is one of the best books I have ever read.
I honestly do not understand the obessions with Twilight. There are millions of writers much more talented than Stephanie Meyer, yet she uses bull**** to get to the top.
Trash like Twilight (Toilet) seems to be the quickest way to fame. I guess that is how it works. Scandals get awards and prizes.
Twilight is a waste of money and a waste of space. It pollutes people’s minds with pointless junk, and brainwashes the population.
Stephanie Meyer should be dragged into an alleyway and shot.
Pointless. To each is own. I love Twilight but I also never got into the whole Harry Potter thing and I never will, I can’t relate to those characters. I relate to Bella and I think most women do. Like I said though, everyone has different tastes. So when it comes down to it this question is pointless, because everyone is entitles to their own opinions.
IT IS FREAKING HARRY POTTER
I read both series, I felt like Twilight had more of an interesting topic, as with Harry Potter kinda kept me confused and bored, mostly the last one.
Twilight always kept you hanging and wanting more.
So, if I had to chose it would be Twilight.
Personally, I think the Harry Potter series is far superior than Twilight. As you mentioned the HP characters are far more interesting and complex. Although magic is the central theme of the books, I think it is very realistic. The characters still have problems and face challenges that all everyone faces at different points in their lives. I think this gives the series a timeless quality that Twlight just doesn’t have. I just thought Twilight was TOO fantasy. Bella gives up her life to be a vampire and they never dwell on the negatives of this decision. Only that she will be perfectly happy once her and Edward are vampires together. The whole series focuses on their lust for each other. I thought it was a good romance novel for teenagers, but not much more.
We’re about to get into our elaborate costumes to go see HBP.
Four HP geeks here, although my stepdaughter also appreciates Twilight.
Oh, come on. Harry Potter is clearly the better of the two. The only people who will disagree are young teen girls who have fallen in love with the Twilight character Edward and Robert Pattinson who plays him. I read a few chapters of the Twilight book and stopped. I went home after watching the film and didn’t remember a thing. It never pulled me in. Harry Potter, on the other hand, puts you in a completely new world. I believe I am there, in Hogwarts, along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione when I read the Harry Potter books. I wanted to be there and truly missed it when the story was over.
Harry Potter is known to all audiences all over the world. Twilight is known to young adolescent girls who also idolize Hannah Montana. They obviously don’t know how to recognize a truly talented masterpiece.
Twilight is a mediocre book written by a amateur author which success feeds off tween hype.
All i can tell you is Twilight is lame in my opinion. If you want a real vampire movie, nothing beats THE LOST BOYS , it was made in 1987 and still rocks! Its not like the little teen drama movies of today.
Having read both the Harry Potter and Twilight series, I feel I am entitled to my opinion.
Harry Potter is better.
It seems like whoever I talk to about Twilight won’t admit that it’s a romance. They’re response is “But there’s action in it!” or “No, it’s about vampires”. You can’t deny it’s a series about Bella and Edward falling in love.
Which is why it’s causing so much conflict. You get people who like predictable romances, probably the cause for Twilight’s popularity among teenagers, against people who like like action-packed science fiction novels. It’s stupid to compare them.
Here’s why I like Harry Potter better than Twilight:
As I may have already made exceptionally clear, I believe Twilight was predictable. Regardless of the whole vampire thing, it was still very unrealistic. They win the big battle at the end, everybody lives happily ever after. Readers don’t cry, they aren’t shocked, they aren’t….anything.
Harry Potter ended in a marginally predictable way. However, it was not an unrealistic fairy tale happy ending.
There was reason for each of the Harry Potter books. There were clues to future books, background information, suspense, plot-twists, and even a small amount of romance. In each book, there’s something new going on.
Meyer could have fit it all into two books. Boy meets girl. They get married, have a child, the end.
I could probably name fifty more reasons for my preference, but I’m probably angering some 14 year old girl who’s never read any book besides Twilight, and thinks it’s the bible.
Just remember: You’re entitled to your own opinion too, as long as you’ve read Twilight, AND Harry Potter.
Harry Potter has a detailed plot, amazing character development, all kinds of mood, and many relatable subjects. While the ignorant say that Harry Potter is simply a story about a wizard, if you delve deeper into the books you find that this is not the case. The seven book series is also about self-sacrifice, finding out who you are, and yes…even love. Love is a huge factor in Harry Potter, despite what many Twilight fans think.
Twilight has no significant plot. The four books are filled with Edward and Bella staring googly-eyed at each other. While Edward may seem “romantic”, he actually exhibits stalker and abusive actions by watching Bella sleep, monitoring who she can hang out with, etc. Bella Swan lets a man domineer her life and is weak and spineless. Hermione Granger, on the other hand, helps Harry through all his adventures. Without Hermione, Harry could have never managed to defeat Voldemort. Without Bella, Edward could be fine in life.
I could go on and on and on, but I’m not going to. This is where I end my rant. I’ll add more when I’m not tired. (I was up all night watching Half-Blood Prince, which was amazing!) And before Twilight fans respond angrily, I did read all four Twilight books (and Midnight Sun) and obviously all seven Harry Potter books. Thanks!
I agree that comparing the two franchises is completely impossible. The two are written in different styles and are from two completely different time lines in the world history.
I enjoy both series and can’t tell which I like more. I started the Potter series in 1998 before it was big here in the US and I didn’t even think about reading Twilight until I saw a preview for it! Both are enjoyable reads and I am completely irked by people trying to compare them. Its really impossible. And who cares which one is “better” neither has to be.
*bangs head on table* Not you too!
Okay, now Meyer has admitted that she is flattered by being compared to Jo, but she also admits that she isn’t even close to as good of an author.
Besides, while in my opinion, JKR is *much* more talented at writing in general, they really aren’t the same at all. They definitely shouldn’t be compared.
(By the way, I’ve noticed a decrease in the amount of Twihard questions in the last few weeks. It’s a fad. Let it pass.)
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WILL NOT HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HARRY POTTER WILL ALWAYS BE UNIQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HARRY POTTER IS AWESOME AND WILL ALWAYS BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think J.K. Rowling is a better writer – but i would have to say i like the twilight books better. There is something about the way she writes that just puts you in the shoes of the heroin. in Harry Potter, its all out there you know the story and you know how its going to end .. but with twilight there is always that little piece of you that, even though you know the way it ends, you expect it to go the way you want it to.
I don’t like Twilight. Never read it, but from the HUGE publicity on the book, I think it’s one of those OMG SO HOT! kind of books. Harry potter, though less realistic, is better written.
harry potter is so much better, and will always be.
twilight is a good book but harry potter is better.
I believe that Harry Potter is a much better read. I think the fantasy of the whole thing is what first got me so interested. I’m also an avid reader so I appreciated the length of the series compared to Twilight. I hate getting into a good plot just for it to be over with 100 pages later…but I do believe the argument is like comparing apples to bowling balls. To each his own!
JK is by far a much, much better writer than Stephenie and I enjoy her books. However, Stephenie’s writing has an addicting quality to me. I’m not a fan of her writing style but the story is very good and draws me in. I do not think the two should be compared as they are two different writers of two different plots. I like both of them for different reasons and the books are equally good.
I don’t think people should have to choose between the two, but for me, Twilight is just a terrible book. Yeah, you get into the narrator’s mind, and what do you find? She’s a shallow idiot with no emotional or intellectual value who lusts for the bad boy with no personality. The fact that Bella, the main character, is a bad person is only part of the problem, though. The rest of the problem lies with the other characters, the plot, and the writing. There is nothing “good” about this book.
Harry Potter, on the other hand, is amazing in every way. The writing is superb (while I have little authority to say this, check out Stephen King’s opinion), the characters are deep and realistic, and the plot EXISTS (none of which you can say about Twilight).
More than Twilight, though, what bothers me is that people think you HAVE to choose. It’s like when I was little, and you couldn’t like both the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, you could only like one. That’s ridiculous. I hate Twilight, but if a fellow Potter fan loves Twilight as well, I don’t see that as a betrayal of any kind. There are a lot of people who love all the books, and they shouldn’t be forced to “choose.”
Harry Potter is way better than twilight. Twilight doesnt stand a chance!
My personal opinion is that Harry Potter is better. While I like both series and both movie sets, I think Twilight is more like a romance novel with the concept of vampirism thrown into it. It makes for an interesting watch/read but Harry Potter has more adventure, thrill, and suspense than Twilight.
Harry Potter is definately better.
Well personally I prefer Harry Potter by far, but opinions are never right or wrong. Thus neither can be said to be conclusively better.
I personally think the Harry Potter franchise is the stupidest drivel I have ever read or seen (movie wise). I have read all the Twilight books and fell the story is infinely better than Harry Potter.
I think, for me, the biggest difference is indeed the believability. I can’t bring myself to believe in the Harry Potter story. It’s just stupid. But the theme of Twilight in the end is enduring love and perseverance. That I can believe in…maybe even the existance of vampires…
HARRY POTTER! I loved all the books in the twilight saga, but harry potter is just so….”brilliant” ! lol. It has a much more suspenseful and complicated and interesting storyline than twilight with twists and turns in all the right places. I love twilight too, dont get me wrong, I was obsessed, but i mean it just doesnt match up to harry potter.
I’m pretty much crazy about both. I really don’t think you should compare them though, they are like two different things on totally different levels. They are both really good for what they are.Twilight is about vampires/werewolves and Harry Potter is about wizards. Two totally different subjects. But if you want to compare them, you should compare them to other things on the same subject, which would make much more sense then this whole really-good-wizard-movie/book vs. really-good-vampire-movie/book. Personally, I just think it’s ridiculous. But if we are going into the more superior writer…I’m keeping my opinions to myself.
While I think that JK is undoubtedly a more skilled writer, and while I enjoyed the Harry Potter series immensely, Twilight was just as much of a page-turner for different reasons. Although Meyer lacks the verbal finesse and ability to indulge in extensive character development of many authors in her genre, the plotlines are satisfying enough to make up for it. The intense romantic theme of the Twilight books would have been out of place in Rowling’s magical fantasy, which is full of comedy and drama with a few dashes of romance thrown in.
I think what’s at the heart of it is, no one’s all that embarrassed to say they read Harry Potter because it’s good, but the Twilight books really are a guilty pleasure. I’m in my twenties, and could not identify with Meyer’s heroine at all (she seems needy and way too self-deprecating for my liking) however, I still kept reading. There was just…something about it. I was giving myself an internal ribbing throughout, as were most of my friends who had all secretly read the same books. People over the age of 18 can fairly freely talk about Harry Potter without meeting too much ridicule – Twilight, on the other hand, is very fashionable to dislike.
So, (nearly) shamelessly, I think that one of the main things I enjoyed about Twilight was the much under-appreciated character of Jacob. New Moon and Eclipse were my favourite books because of his central role in them, and I found myself willing the plotline in his favour because of how much I liked him. But Meyer just about won me round again in the last book. Just.
Anyway, JK Rowling wins in terms of creativity, as the Potter books are full of twists and turns whereas Meyer’s series follows a predictable storyline. But there’s a reason why the Twilight books are so popular, especially among teenage girls. The theme of a supernatural love triangle is not new by any means, but it still works the same as it always has – merging fantasy with just enough reality for the reader to freely daydream in a similar world to the one that the author has created. With Harry Potter, it didn’t capture my imagination in the same way – perhaps a dual cause that 1) it didn’t have enough romance in it to satisfy my inner teenager, and 2) the books were imaginative enough and present a complete package. You don’t have room to fantasize yourself, because Rowling ties up all the loose ends so brilliantly.
So really I think that while the two series are both popular with a similar market, both as books and as films, they do represent very different genres and styles of writing. It may well be fruitless to compare the two in any serious way.
I would love it in a few years if both authors came back with another book each, having moved their timelines on a few years. Wishful thinking?
I think the whole debate over this is pointless. I love both Twilight and Harry Potter for different reasons. Even though they’re both fantasy stories, they are so incredibly different it’s impossible to compare them. And how could anyone call Twilight more “realistic”? Vampires and werewolves are normal now? Since when?
I agree that J.K. Rowling is a much better writer, and planned her saga in a much better way. But Stephenie Meyer is great, too. I guess my point is, why don’t we stop arguing over this and let people like what they want to like? They’re both good, and they’re both taking the teen world by storm right now. What’s the point in fighting over which is better than the other?
Honestly, I think Twilgiht is better then Harry Potter. I never was a harry Potter fan, and probably never will be, but Twilight on the other hand, is a great book and an amazing movie too. Before I saw Twilight, I was the most Anti-Twilight person alive, but once I saw the movie and read the first book, I thirsted for more, I went out and got the rest of the books and read them all in a week. Twilight brings you into the book and makes you think its all happening to you. Twilight is a Great book And Movie.
Harry Potter by far. Twilight isn’t even a piece of gum on the shoe that is the epic Harry Potter series.
I think twilight is the BEST! People just have different taste. Evryone has an opinion and mine is that Edward is very handsome and I ♥ twilight!
it is kinda pointless. everyone has their opinions. i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE harry potter. i hate twilight with a passion. No vampire sparkles in the sun! robert pattinson is not “handsome”. far from it. he appeared in harry potter number 4 as cedric diggory, and no one thought he was hot then, but now theres a big gipe about how everyone looooves twilight. twilight has been pushing on every open spot on televison. “twilghts new moon in theatures blah blah blah…”. it is sooo not realistic. its so fake, i can taste their plastic. a little 8 yr old i can understand liking it, but a 11+ person, i cannot. Harry Potter is a GREAT family movie. while twilight is “edward! edward! bella! edward! jacob! edward! ROBERT!” screeched by fangirls. note the girls not boys. harry potter has both boy and girl fans. in conclusion:
HARRY POTTER RULEZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!
Harry Potter is and always will be the better series. I’m afraid Twilight will never cut it or even be anywhere near it’s level.
I have to admit that Stephanie M. is a good writer and she is one of the better ones out there, but Twlight was not one of her best pieces of work in my opinion. Her “The Host” was a greater and more original book than Twlight and I’m sad to see it not have a sequel.
Harry Potter on the other hand has seven books and each one is filled with adventure and quite literally, a whole entire world that is much more “realistic” than vampires ever will be.
interesting topic. I personally have not read Harry Potter so I can’t exactly comment saying Twilight is better than Harry Potter. I’m not much of a reader but Twilight lured me into it’s trap. It’s an interesting story, although there are many grammar mistakes and the plot could have been planned out it’s still a good book.
I think it’s totally pointless.
Honestly, eveyone has their own opinion.
The Twilight Saga was very good and intertaining, with Harry Potter I couldn’t get past page one.
I will try to read it again, but as I said before, the arguements about which series is better is pointless, absolutley.

Here’s a reply I gave once to one of these questions:
Harry Potter. It’s a story that appeals to a larger audience than Twilight could ever hope to reach. Twilight takes all the legend and lore that surrounds vampires and discards them like it’s nothing. In fact, I wouldn’t even consider Edward a “vampire” in the true sense of it all.
Not only that, but the characterization is quite poor in Twilight, especially when it comes to the females. They are paper-thin personalities and have no depth. Plus the romance is nothing more than lust. Neither side of the realtionship really has true devotion of the heart toward the other. It’s all about the sex between them.
Bottom line, Harry Potter is much better written and a more respectable piece of literature than Twilight. When push comes to shove, literary analyists in the future will be looking back upon the Harry Potter series rather than this overrated, overhyped poor excuse for fan fiction.
I haven’t read any of the Harry Potter books, but Stephanie Meyer has to be about the worst writer I’ve ever read. I suppose it’s possible that she improved after the initial Twilight book – the only one I’m judging by since it’s the only one I’ve read – but I can’t see how she could have improved enough to make her writing decent.
Which is not to say that the book wasn’t interesting: the plot was intriguing, she just doesn’t have the skills to fill in the book’s skeletal outline well.
I think Harry Potter is better, because it has so much depth and all the characters are very likeable. In contrast, i agree with the opinion that Twilight is rather one-dimensional, and i cant get through a single book without wanting to slap the main character for being so obnoxiously whiny. Also, Harry Potter is the original!! And in my opinion, JK Rowling is a better author than Stephanie Meyer by far!
dude twilight is stupid.
it hasn’t made half as much money as harry potter.
twilight is about a freaking vampire who runs around without combing his hair.
i love both books.
but Harry Potter means more to me.
Ive sat and waited for the books to come out.
they stretched over my child and teenage years.
and i grew to love them as real people.
twilight is an amazing book.
and the series is awesome.
i can really relate to it.
but the books are written so quickly, i dont even have time to wonder what the next book was going to be out.
jk rowling is by far the better writer.
This is the worst question of all time. Daniel Radcliff gets mad, he looks mad (Not counting first two movies, he was just a little kid though). Robert Patterson gets mad, he looks constipated.
Emma cries over a boy, and you would think it was real. Bella (Erased actor’s name from memory) mumbled for a while, blubbered for a while, sobbed for about 3 minutes making no sound except for, “Blubada,” before saying, “You can’t ask me to leave!”
There really is no Ron character for comic relief in the Bella movies, an element which I greatly enjoy.
As for the Twilight movies being more realistic. When Edward was hopping around the trees, it looked like the cropped him off of the green screen, performed a motion tween in a straight line and said there you go, flying. In Harry Potter, the flying looks REAL!!! Anybody who tries to compare the two are cracked up and need to join Doctor House in the insane asylum.
Why do people compare Harry Potter and Twilight?
Harry Potter is better than Twilight.
HP will always be better. No competition.
I think Twilight is a fad that will die out soon – once the movies are complete. It only lasted a little while, whereas Harry Potter went on for several years, with more books and a more spread out fanbase. Twilight mostly appeals to teenage girls and some older women, but Harry Potter was liked by people of all ages throughout the world. I don’t think Twilight can EVER surpass that. Also, the HP movies did way better than the Twilight movie so far, so that should be taken into account too…
There’s no real point to comparing. i think both series are quite enjoyable. however when it comes down to it, harry potter is just a little more THERE when it comes to plot and feelings and mystery, and i could tell the twilight books were lacking a bit in literary merit.
I really think that JK Rowling is a far better writer. the books of Harry Potter (and the movies) entertain many age groups of society including children. i think that the twilight series is more focused on the teenage girl then any body. and seriuosly both books are unrealistic so i definately dont see how thats even a point. all in all the harry potter books are written better, and the movies are made better.
definately way bigger of a Harry potter fan.. theres really no comparison
Harry Potter is far better. In Harry Potter, Rowling creates a whole new world. Harry Potter is also truly unique. Whereas Twilight is another vampire love, drama story.
Rowling’s mind is brilliant! 5 stars!
Twilight 3 stars!
Harry Potter.
The two series aren’t even in the same LEAGUE.
Twilight is fine, Harry Potter is magnificence.
I agree with Stephen King, JK Rowling is by far the better author. Stephanie Meyer…well…not the best. And I HATE the Twilight series! Horrible!!!!
The Harry Potter books are written better, and I do like them much more than the Twilight series. But, I did enjoy Twilight series, too. Alot of the time when I go into the young adult section of my local library (a.k.a “teen” books) most of the books aren’t hard to read, but they are my “just for fun” books, meaning it can have the language that seventh grader would just understand, but it is still entertaining to read. Overall, I love the Harry Potter books more though.
Im a fan of both Harry Potter and Twilight. But If I had to choose I would pick Harry Potter without hesitation. Harry Potter is just the irreplaceable. Twilight will beat Harry Potter. And when Harry Potter 6 comes out, you’ll find out that Harry Potter still has the most fans than Twilight.
Stephenie Meyer couldn’t write her way out of a 1st grade spelling bee. I mean really; who writes fiction in the 1st person? 98% of her books are dialog…
They suck more than an algae eater.
I love twilight.
Hmm. While I think that both Stephenie Meyer and J.K. Rowling are fantastic authors, I think that J.K. Rowling is the better writter of the two. However, I like the story that the Twilight Saga tells better than Harry Potter, even though i still absolutely love the Harry Potter series. As for the Twilight and Harry Potter movies; I definantly think that the Harry Potter movies were way better. I honestly didn’t think the Twilight movie was very good. Hopefully the sequel to Twilight will be much better. So theres my take on things.
Harry Potter is better by far. I have read both series in their entirety, and I was an English Literature major in school. J.K. Rowling’s writing is much better, and the storyline is more complex. Twilight was entertaining, but Bella was sometimes annoying and it is only a romance based on sensationalism (due to the vampire factor) after all.
This is no contest, really. Harry Potter all the way. From the use of imagination in creating HP’s world to the symbolism and interesting tug-of-war between good and evil, the story and what the ideals presented in it are more relevant to our human lives than the romantic story of Twilight. I believe Rowlings’ book may one day be assigned in schools for its detail and messages offered. Meyers’ writing and style is not comparable to Rowlings’. Just because both books are in the fantasy genre does not make them alike.
Personally, vampires-gone-emo does not appeal to me.
Ugh. Not THIS again.
Harry Potter is overall generally better than Twilight.
HP is SO much deeper, the characters are more developed, the plot is MUCH better, and the suspense as well, mystery, you name it! But Twilight…well, the characters are kind of shallow (eg Edward- the absolutely PERFECT vampire, Bella- Mary Sue damsel-in-distress), and you can basically guess what the ending would be (eg Edward saves the day!) whereas in HP the characters are dynamic and they learn much more from their experiences by the end of the series (eg Harry learns about love and loyalty, Ron matures) and you have to wait and put the pieces together to figure out the ending (eg Snape’s loyalty).
HP caught me with interest on every page. The description in Twilight is so…blurry, whereas in HP, it was beautiful and vivid.
i think tha there is no point arguing. the only thing in common is that they both are fantasy. Harry potter is written in third person and is about a wizard trying to save the world basically with his friends beside him and adventuring into danger, while twilight, though fictional as well, ismore of a romantic novel with action included. also unlike harry, bellas friends are more family tied then true friendship because it is mostly love intrest. i have read both books an they are totally different, andboth great books in my opinion. although, i do think that jk rowling puts in more feeling and stephenie meyer is more for words.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention.
I love both series, I just think that HP has more depth to it…overall better. If you like Twilight more or HP more, that’s up to the person. ^^
I would have to say Harry Potter was the better read/movie. Bookwise there was more character developement, and the plot was more complex. It was more realistic and relatable at some parts. Rowling didn’t hold back on killing her characters either.
I found Twilight to be cliche and the characters way to perfect. I felt as if nothing really happened except Bella became a vampire and married Edward. I also feel it’s more of a young adult and pre-teen novel. Harry Potter is more universal, and good for all ages.
Harry Potter (in my opinion, of course) is a bagazillion times better than Twilight in many ways
-book is better written–more appealing to teenagers
-movies are better directed-more action, plot, intruiging
the list goes on.
not only do i think harry potter is better, i simply dislike twilight
i feel like the only reason that people think twilight is better than harry potter has nothing to do with the books, but that they simply think robert pattinson is “hotter” than daniel radcliffe
i do think that the whole debate is pointless. There are people who like Magic, broom stick and potions better while other people like love and romance better. everyone is just diferent.
while I’am and always will be a Harry Potter Fan. till even the last episode.
I have to say that I have read and own all 4 twilight books and have seen the first movie and wait patiently for the next. so far the movie hasnt even captured 1/10 of the book and I’ve yet to see the full qualities of the actors with the limited character play. but then thats the way books are compared to movies. there just 1/10 of the suspense and interest.
I Must say that when comparing these to movies and books there is no comparison. they both hold there own.
I liked both series of books about the same. I think Harry Potter is better written and thought out, but the romance aspect of Twilight is intriguing as well. I like them both.
Both series are very enjoyable in my opinion. I am a die hard Harry Potter fan, but recently have become very involved in the Twilight series. Although Rowling is really unarguably the better writer, and the Twilight saga feels slightly rushed when reading it, they are both amazing in their own respects. In order for a book or a series to be a good read, it doesn’t have to compare to Shakespeare. Sometimes its fun to read the fluff, too. I find both equally addicting…in a good way
I don’t think Twilight will stand the test of time where Harry Potter will. Twilight is a fad. And the Twilight fourth book is awful. I can’t believe that they published it where everything works out for the main characters it was boring. I wish the author would say that she had pressure to get the book done and do a re-write.
I whole-heartedly feel that Harry Potter is the superior work comparing the two series. Stephen King is correct, Rowling is the superior writer between the two authors. I have read the entire Twilight series and I can say that the plot is attractive because every person finds themselves wishing they had a handsome individual desiring their eternal attention. However, Harry Potter’s plot is so unique and intriguing that I cannot compare any other novel that I have read. I have read other great works but Harry Potter was able to capture my attention from a very young age and kept my intrigue until the finish of the series. Rowling exploits much better diction in her writing and thus creates a more structured piece of work in comparison to Twilight. I feel that if one wants to read a novel that contains a great and unique plot with the addition of a well written story, they would be wise to pickup Harry Potter and let Twilight gather dust in the corner of a shelf.
Definitely Harry Potter. Harry Potter is such a magical adventurous story. Whenever my parents would argue, I would run in my room and read Harry Potter and it would be like I’m in another world.
As for Twilight, I think it is boring garbage that little girls may like for some unknown reason.
The books/films of Harry Potter beats the books/films of Twilight by a 100!
Harry Potter, by far. Stephenie Meyer is just not a great writer. Each successive book gets a little stupider, and Edward IS a creepy stalker. She calls it feminist because Bella chooses her life, but the main character is, essentially, a woman who gives up everything she once cared about for her husband. Everyone is either completely good (yet tragically flawed) or completely bad. Harry Potter is full of strong role models and people who depend on each other. No one is either good nor evil, except the big Voldy, and there’s a REASON for everyone doing everything. If Stephenie Meyer tried to write seven books, I think people would get tired very easily.
Harry Potter is so much better. All it takes is to make Harry look a bit hunkier and the girls will be all over him! Then Harry Potter could whoop Twilights ass anyday!
I think twilight is awful. the legacy of twilight won’t last half as long as harry potter will.
Personally, I like them equally. They both have very different story lines so its hard to compare them.
I am a fan of both series, and I find the whole debate totally pointless. Nobody has to pick one series to like more than the other; you can like both series. Each series has its own storyline and theme. Harry Potter is good for people for like action, adventure, suspense, friendship, and loyalty. Twilight, on the other hand, is more involved in romance, with a bit of action and suspense thrown into the mix. J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer have two very different styles of writing, so it’s almost impossible to compare. In response to Alex’s comment about the characters, I highly disagree. Both Twilight characters and Harry Potter characters have a unique story behind them. Either way, you can’t compare the two different stories because they have two entirely different messages and ideas behind them. You can’t decide which one is better, because not everybody is into the same themes, like friendship vs. love.
thats not comparison!
harry potter has more of a plot and legacy
twilight sucks
.-.
Okay, now that I have your attention, there is a long ongoing debate which is better, Twilight, or Harry Potter? Who is a better writer?
I would say J.K. Rowling. Why? Well, I have read both the Twilight series and the Harry Potter series. I two, was once blinded by the charming and handsome and…undead…Edward. But after seeing who was cast for him I quickly fell out the trace due to the fact the Robert fell miles short of my own Edward, who, infact was not THAT stunning. Once I had been woken up from this love spell that Meyers had put me under I re-read her series (I skipped the last two, I couldn’t bring myself to finish them). I noticed something. How many times could she possibly compare his skin to granite? Or marble? And so on and so forth. Given, there are only so many words in the english lanuage and only so many combinations for them. But she’s written four books (obviously not including The Host). Only four Twilight books. J.K. Rowling has seven and she still hasn’t done any annoying and tedious redundant sentences. J.K. Rowling has seven and she still hasn’t done any annoying and tedious redundant sentences. J.K. Rowling has seven and she still hasn’t done any annoying and tedious redundant sentences. See what I mean? Rowling not only has written more books, but hers was much more complex and compelling. For example, in the second book, Harry murdered a piece of Lord Voldemort through a journal he stored his soul. That journal was one out of the seven places he stored his soul, and we discover that in seventh book. Her plot is much more complex, and take from someone who writes a lot, that is a hard thing to keep track of.
Madonna and Michael Jackson are world wide phenomenons. So, in fact is Harry Potter. Easy. Billions of copies are sold for ONE book alone. Twilight, yes, sure. But how many of those Twilight fans picked up a Harry Potter book? I can name two people off the top of my head who never read Harry Poter but read Twilight. So, how many of the books that Twilight sold were sold within ENLIGHS SPEAKING AND FIRST WOLD COUNTRIES ALONE???? And how many of the Harry Potter books were sold EVERYWHERE. I’m going to take a shot in the dark and say the book that has been around since the 90′s and changed the way children lived and thought and what they did. I mean, Harry Potter, for you slower ones.
Secondly, how many girls, once reading Harry Potter took a look at their boyfriend and said “Ew.” Now, how many girls looked at their boyfriend after reading Twilight and said “What the fuck? Why aren’t you Edward?” Like Disney, Twilight gives unrealistic expecations for girls to have for men. I know what you guys are thinking “oh, well, men have unrealistic expecations for women.” Well, lets be serious here for a minute. Didn’t you also for men? Don’t you sometimes wish that your man could look like Ryan Reynolds? Or Hugh Jackman? But you love him to pieces anyways. So does your guy. He knows he can’t get a girl like Megan Fox. And he knows YOU can’t get Brad Pitt. So, how is Twilight worse? Well, you are comparing him to A PERSON WHO DOES NOT EXIST!! HE ISN’T REAL. That is hardly fair! I mean, sure you probably couldn’t get Brad Pitt. But someone CAN. Someone did!!! NO ONE CAN GET EDWARD. Except Bella but she is a doesn’t exist either!! So don’t let Twilight dampen your relationship. Don’t be let down by the “average” man, the “living”, “breathing” man, you know, the one with the heartbreat? Don’t be let down by him just because his eyes don’t change colors or wants to suck your blood.
Now, you might be saying, “Well, Robyn, I’m sure Harry Potter has ruined something for you.” Well, no it hasn’t. The only time I was upset with Harry Potter was this one time in my car I said to my dad “Wouldn’t it be cool if I got a letter to Hogwarts?” And he said “Well, we’ll see what happens when you turn eleven.” So, I waited two or three years on my eleventh birthday I didn’t not recieve an owl post letter asking me to attend hogwarts school of witch craft and wizardy. I was pretty upset.
Also, I realize that maybe Twilight a bit more relastic then Harry Potter, and Harry Potter is also fake. But I don’t let Harry Potter ruin my love life, and since when is being more relastic better? Star Trek is far from relastic, but look at it. Star Wars? Definatly not real, it’s huge. Slumdog Millionaire wasn’t, what are the odds of him happening to know the questions? And happening to get on the show? I love that movie anyways. You probably do to. Lord Of The Rings isn’t relastic, look at it. Almost every Disney movie EVER MADE isn’t. Like, come on, UP? The Little Mermaid? Lion King? Please. Why would the animals go to worship a baby lion that would grow up to eat them?
I could keep going about this forever, but I won’t. Because odds are, no one is going to read ALL of this. Lets be relastic. But, all in all, Twilight is nothing compared to Harry Potter.
I think that HP is better, but I was interested in Twilight when I gave it a chance……
Harry Potter.
Duh.
I really only read the back cover of twilight. The book with a chess piece on the front.
personally, even though i have loved all the harry potter’s so far, i’m even more impressed with the twilight saga. it is so easy for people to read and stephanie meyer has a very huge talent for describing without over doing it. after i read the books, i looked up forks, washington and the pics that they show are exactly what i pictured in my head. i’ve only read the harry poter’s once, but i’ve reread the twilight saga more than 20x and its still just as entertaining. she also left herself an opening to write the saga all over again from the male character’s perspective which is highly entertaining in itself. she is one of the most talented writers i’ve read in a while…she deserves more credit than whats been given to her! i look forward to reading even more!
I have read both books and I feel that they both have good qualities, though Harry Potter is above and beyond better. It’s in a different league than Twilight.
Harry Potter is better written and there are several characters of different backgrounds and personalities, so it’s easy to find one to relate to and attach yourself to. The main character is flawed and often not confident in his abilities to do what is required of him. The books are descriptive and you can immerse yourself in the world the author has created.
The downside to Harry Potter is that it’s marketed to children, but it’s often dark and scary. I feel children can handle the dark story in Harry Potter, but I imagine some adults would not like a child to read about beloved characters dying or an evil overlord murdering so he can split his soul to become immortal.
Twilight has a good story to market to teenage girls. The main character of Twilight is a girl most teenage girls can relate to. She’s flawed in an endearing way and is very much a “Mary Sue”. The plots are so outrageous that I would have a thought about what could happen, think it was far too fetched to actually happen, and then in the next chapter that’s what would happen. It was as if it was written by a 15 year old girl. It lacks the description of Harry Potter and lacks the imagination in creation and characterization.
However, if you want your child to read a happy story with little conflict and a happy ending, Twilight has it. Twilight preaches morality (almost to the point it gets annoying).
J K Rowling is an author that will be remembered for hundreds of years and her books will be cherished.
Stephenie Mayer is an author that entertains and can write a story a teenage girl will love, but in 30 years nobody will remember Twilight.
If you want to know what it’s like to be a 15 year old girl, read Twilight. If you want to immerse yourself in a world of magic, conflict, intrigue and characters you can really relate you, read Harry Potter.
I absolutely LOVE both Twilight and Harry Potter, however, Harry Potter will always be my #1. Unlike Twilight, there is TONS of witty humor in Harry Potter and in the end, everything from ALL 7 books connect. You just wonder how J.K. Rowling came up with this stuff! On the other hand, it seems like all the characters in Twilight are always brooding and the plot really isn’t that complex. Plus, surprise after surprise awaits you in the Harry Potter series. But don’t get me wrong, like I said, I really do LOVE both books!
I think you can’t really compare the two. Rowling and Meyers are both great writers in their own way. I think maybe Meyers is more consistently a good writer…if you’ve ever read through the Harry Potter series you can see Rowling going from a so-so writer to a really great writer. I also like meyers a lot for all the detail she puts in her books…she never leaves you wanting for more information.
I would say Rowling is far a better author.. although both Potter Series & Twilight saga are fun to read. But the thing is that Rowling constantly wrote all 7 books in the same high quality – like there’s a standard for her stories.
Twilight is definitely not well-written. But the Harry Potter series—the plot is complex, and writing consistent. Twilight tries to be enticing with its action scenes but they seem boring and unnatural. Harry Potter is well thought out, with admirable characters. Jk Rowling makes her readers obsessed with the characters because of their personalities and their goodness of heart, rather than a characters looks and the FACADE of deep, everlasting love. Stephen King is amazing, and I believe he is also right with this. GO DUMBLEDORE!! (not some creepy, “jaw-tensing” moron called Edward)
Oh. My. Goodness.
Is there really any competition?
J.K. Rowlings is without a doubt the best and most imaginative writer ever. Although I have read the whole series, the movies are very suspenseful. And it’s kind of funny to see my friends, who haven’t read the series, go crazy trying to find out what will happen.
But they are not that into reading. Their loss.
I have not read “Twilight” and do not intend to. I’ve seen the movie and it was pretty good, but definitely not as good as any of the Harry Potter movies.
Of course, the HP books were better than the movies, but still, reading always puts a different perspective in your mind, so it is kind of a personal thing.
Harry Potter is legendary. Twilight is a knock-off of the epic series.
I feel bad for anyone and everyone who has wasted their time even thinking about if Twilight is better.
No competition. Harry Potter owns.
I think that the HP franchise is better. Vampires have been done over and over again. Interview with a Vampire, Queen of the Damned are just two of the movies about vampires. Twilight doesn’t exactly keep in line 100% of what a vampire is like so the writer didn’t research a lot before writing on the topic. That’s okay though. HP has been around longer and will around longer than Twilight. I do agree that the only reason Twilight has even had any following is because of the person they casted as the lead. You see Twilight and Rob Pat’s posters, buttons.. everywhere. I can’t go into a store and not see something with it. HP is so much better.
I love Twilight more, but I’m also enjoy Harry Potter. Twilight just seems more realistic. Stephenie Meyer makes the Twilight vampires seem so realisitc. Harry Potter feels like he doesn’t exist because there’s so much strange things. Like the names, for instance. Dumbledore, Voldemort, Quidditch, they sound like cheesy aliases.
Twilight is one of the most pathetic pieces of literature I’ve ever seen. Rowling can write. Meyer.. I still don’t know how she got a foot in to get published.
Tamora Pierce will probably always be my favorite author, but I respect Rowling and enjoy her work. I understand her burn out, too.
i sorta borrowed this review which shares the same viewpoints as me:

The Secrets of the Sparkle a.k.a. TWILIGHT: STONIFIED (Image heavy)
ETA Due To Heavy Traffic This was written to amuse my buds and me. I am not claiming to be the Mormon Vampire Authority, even though let’s face it: I am the leading Mormon Vampire Authority. (Nutshell: laugh, or turn back now. This was meant for joking and is filled with dirty words they can’t use on TV.)
ETA #2 This was written ages ago. If you’re new, I’m glad you came over, but please know that I’m not commenting/discussing/sharing testimonies over the truth/horribleness/why am I allowed out of my cage to write such hateful things about the greatest couple ever on earth (figuratively.) Sorry, this thing got huge and I was just joking with my buds. But you knock your socks off.
The Secrets of the Sparkle a.k.a. TWILIGHT: STONIFIED (For real this time.)
So here’s the thing. I was going to be all whipping out the smart essay, pointing out all the subconscious LDS meta that SMeyers jammed in these books, showing how I thought she didn’t even realize what she was borrowing (because honestly, I just don’t think she’s smart enough to lay it out there, you know?) But here’s the thing:
THE BOOKS ARE REALLY REALLY DUMB. Like, “Strategery” dumb. (That’s a Dubya quote.) So I’m giving back at the same reading-comprehension level if you will. And you will. There’s so much dumb, in fact, that it will take a few posts to get it all out there. So here’s the first book and change.
Hold on, hold on, I need to keep setting the tone:
“Is there anything more beautiful than a beautiful, beautiful flamingo, flying across in front of a beautiful, beautiful sunset? And he’s carrying a beautiful rose in his beak, and also he’s carrying a very beautiful painting with his feet. And also, you’re drunk.” ~Jack Handy.
There is heavy word abuse in the book, so I’m trying to spare you that. They are “beautiful,” “perfect,” “chagrin,” and the one I wanted to scream every time I read it, “UGH.” Because cop fathers would clearly say repeatedly, “Ugh.” On with the show!
Stephenie Meyers (who claims that her name is spelled weird. [ETA: *I* spelled it wrong, but my point stands. One letter don't make it weird in that neck of the woods. Carry on! *G*] Um, only in Utah, lady. Which, here is an example of some typical Mormon/Utah names, all people that I KNOW:
* Jannilyn
* Randilynn (guess what her dad’s name is?)
* Faunette
* LaVonne
* Mohonri Morianchimer
* Aereign <– good fucking hell.)
Smeyers grew up in Phoenix and you know this because she likes to mention how awesomely huge it is. She likes it so much that her protagonist, Isabella Swan aka Bella, is from there and constantly reminds her father, Charlie, that Phoenix is waaaaaay bigger than Provo. I mean, Forks, Washington, where the story is set.
But let’s dive into the story….
Meet Isabella Swan, aka the most annoying protagonist you’ll ever come across.
She, by her own account, is awkward, clumsy (she is always balanced precariously over the knife’s edge of almost dying from the danger of cutting a sandwich in half, walking down stairs, breathing… You never know what will force her to take a spill!), unloved by any friends or boys back home, is unattractive, and generally speaking, a loser. This is all by her own words, and she’s the one telling the story. Instead of her being a heroine, I’m calling her a heroick.
Meet her mother, Renee:
Renee is childish and immature and scatterbrained, leaving poor Bella to be All Grown Up before her time. Renee is married to Phil, a baseball player, providing SMeyers an easy out to creating a relationship with these characters. He gets injured at one point, and requires all of Mom’s attention. How convenient!
(Derek Jeter’s Taco Hole!)
Bella moves in with her small town cop father, Charlie.
He’s a gruff man who doesn’t like to talk a lot. Now that’s almost cheating, characters that don’t want to talk or interact. But how easy for our Heroick to interact with the one person who matters? But not yet. Charlie gets her a car, and it’s almost as unattractive and un-workable as Bella, nifty!
(those are actually cool trucks. Anyhoodle.)
She takes herself to school, and she’s all emo and hissy, expecting the worst from the other kids because let’s face it: she’s ugly, she’s awkward, and she’s never had friends before, let alone a boyfriend.
Bella tries to fit in, stumbling, falling, and tripping all the way into the school.
(notice anything in the background? Neither does she. Also, are they made of real Girl Scouts? haha.)
BUT SOMEHOW, every single boy falls in love with her right off the bat. She makes their acquaintances:
First, the kicked puppy dog that is eager for more, Mike! (He’s a total Weenis.)
The queen bee of the class who at first seems nice but ends up being kind of dumb and a bitch, Jessica!
The nice, quiet girl who doesn’t ask any questions that could possibly expose any conflict or struggle or anything else that makes a plot readable, Angela!
Don’t worry about remembering them because she doesn’t give a shit about them, and as a result, neither do we.
Oh, but there’s a boy. He’s in her Biology class. And he’s DREAMY. Also, he clearly hates her, she surmises, because he isn’t falling over her like the other boys and also he scowls and SCOOTS AWAY FROM HER at their shared desk. Even though he scowls, he’s perfect. PERFECT. Let’s meet him:
I give you, Edward Cullen.
Wait, no, here he is:
Every time SMeyers would write about Edward, I would just boggle. She was drawing from everything we Mormons were taught about Good Ol’ Joe – he was handsome, shockingly so, he could draw you in with just his presence, let alone when he spoke, down to his freaking nose and hair color. HI THERE CREEPY AUTHOR WANTING TO BONE YOUR PROPHET. (I have no problem with bible slash, etc. Just… I don’t think she knows she’s doing it.)
You know what’s awesome about having a lead character with no flaws? Nothing! He’s perfect in height, build, voice, eyes (golden!), dress, academics, talents, family, down to his CAR. I LOL’d when I read about this cosmopolitan, haute couture wearing, bon vivant’s car. A VOLVO.
If I may quote Mallory Keaton, “It’s like a refrigerator on wheels!” Now, I know that new Volvos are great cars, but why not a freaking Porsche SUV? And do you notice that the perfect man drives an SUV?? Before those cars were common, they were called MAVs by everyone in Utah and Arizona (a suburb of Utah, if you will. Again: you will.) MAV = Mormon Assault Vehicle. (Need something big to cart around that big ol’ family, huh?)
Bella is MORE CONVINCED THAN EVER that JosephEdward hates her for ever, zomg, I mean, he stopped COMING TO CLASS because he hates her FACE, so she sadly walks to her truck, noticing Edward like, way far away. One of the friends that doesn’t matter except to serve as a plot device Tyler loses control of his van and is certain to KILL HER.
…not if Edward can help it, missy!
Turns out? Are you ready? You’ll never guess this because Edward has a) been in the sunlight, b) walks amongst humans, c) has normal (but perfect) teeth. He is a VAMPIRE you guys! And he doesn’t hate Bella. It’s the opposite. He is COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED with LOVE for this veritable stranger because she smells so fucking good. Like, the best smell you can think of? DOESN’T COMPARE, BITCHES. And he’s been sniffing her surreptitiously since she got to town.
She is delicious, delicious meat to him, but he will hold back because she is the one, and although he doesn’t understand it, he has waited almost 100 years for her. They were meant to be. Just like how Mormons believe they picked their spouses and families in the “pre-existence.” (See: Saturday’s Warrior and “It’s My Turn On Earth” for more on this crappy LDS concept)
Edward is pure white (and delightsome. See: Book of Mormon’s drumbeat that perfect, righteous people are white, or will be PERFECTED IN HEAVEN and made white. No, really. Six times it says that in particular.) and is hard as marble and smart as a crack on the cheek and cold as a bag of frozen peas. And when he steps into the sun, he DAZZLES! Without jazz hands!
Edward also doesn’t believe in open mouth kissing, swearing, chewing tobacco, drinking caffeine, and enjoys time with his family. HE IS THE PERFECT MORMON BOY. But he does like following Bella everywhere she goes, monitoring her every move, because that is what boys who love you do. he also feels the need to carry Bella everywhere she goes (she might fall and hurt herself! Say, isn’t it INTERESTING that a clumsy, accident prone person is involved with vampires? She might spill her own blood at any moment, causing a feeding frenzy!) I’m surprised that Bella’s leg muscles don’t atrophy from the lack of use.
But there’s something else besides Edwards perfection drawing her to him. Well, besides his perfection and his kick ass soccer mom ride and blinged out sunwhite. And besides that whole “I knew you before you were born and now we can be a proper family for eternity” Mormon stuff. HE HAS THE SWEETEST BREATH. We are told this (as well as of his perfection) over and over and over again.
Like
Or a peppermint patty. SWEET, is what I’m saying.
But to make sure that there is NO CONFLICT WHATSOEVER in this story, Edward (and his vampire family) ABSTAIN from humans. Because they only eat animals – specifically predators because they taste so damn good – they consider themselves to be Vegetarians. That word… I do not think it means what you think it means. Isn’t that hilarious? What a crack up Smeyers is! As a result of their “vegetarianism” their eyes aren’t red like normal vampires. They are the butteriest gold that ever was imagined. The gold color is, in a nutshell, perfect. Like him.
Edward, because he’s the perfect guy to bring home to Dad, minus the drinking blood, immortal, creepy stalker thing, doesn’t want them to hook up. Because he could hurt her! (How convenient an excuse for guys would that be? I WILL hurt you eventually, so let’s not hook up. *totally gets in her panties*)
But Bella whines. But Edward is stoic. But Bella pleads. But Edward is unrelenting. Then he relents because there is no conflict in this story. Time to bring her home to meet the perfect family!
Perfection = a constant drum beat in the Mormon church. You aren’t supposed to try to be perfect, you are supposed to be perfect. Your family is the key to this, your family is the key to everything. Your happiness and most importantly, your backstage pass to get into the Penthouse Suite of Heaven where you live forever. Hey, what does that sound like? (One apostate can keep the whole family from heaven!)
Everyone in Edward’s family is: you guessed it, perfect. They all look like they stepped out of a catalog. The people who matter:
Rosalie, originally designed for Edward, but it didn’t take. He turned down the blonde, perfect goddess in favor of Bella, dumpy, sallow-skinned, inky-haired stumbling Bella. He’s so DREAMY! Or possibly has control issues. Rosalie hates Bella. We don’t know why for a loooooong time. But why would you need to know? Just accept!
Rosalie’s “forever temple sealed true love due to his scent” man is Emmett. Emmett grunts a lot, laughs at the thought of fighting because he’s gets a boner for it, and would be a complete douche in RL and probably is that guy that always owes you money. But even with that, he, too, is perfect.
Jasper, boyfriend to Alice (coming soon) who is the one that is the youngest (read: remembers human blood as delicious treats) and has a special power, mood altering. Like having acid or some bennies at any given moment, sweeeeeeeet.
Alice, who cannot walk, she dances. Alice, who can read the future (unless you change your mind.) Alice, who loves to shop and spend and buy and give. Alice, who is delicate and twee and a whirlwind of gaiety. Alice, the plot device. Also, she’s always checking out your future and looking cryptic. Um, thanks?
And because I can’t help myself…
NATURALLY the entire family (save Beautiful, Perfect Rosalie) loves her and has NO ISSUES with her dropping out of school, becoming a vampire, and marrying Edward for all time and eternity, which is her goal. They find her utterly charming and delightful. Many of them, too, carry Bella around because… who the fuck knows. The bitch can’t take two steps without keeling over. Jasper hovers a lot because he wants to drain her body of all its blood like any self-respecting vampire. Edward then takes Bella on an exposition tour of the house, telling her snippets of how each of the Cullens became vampires.
“Late at night an angelic visitor came into my room and gave me the keys to the priesthood eternal life immortality. No Hill Cummorahs were involved in this so I don’t get angry LDS letters. 90 long years later of willing myself not to masturbate, because The Church says that is as bad as fornication, and fourteen thousand scrapbooks and lumpy sweaters later, here you come into my life. It is, in a nutshell, perfect.”
Edward has a gift like Alice has a gift. These spring up with other vampires as SMeyers realizes she needs a plot device to stand in place for any conflict. Edward can READ MINDS. But not Bella’s. Oh, how he longs to hear her thoughts! Her every thought. No, that’s not disturbing.
Bella sometimes wishes he could, but any normal teenager would DIIIIEEEE at the thought.
Now that he loves Bella – I mean, he did stop the van + she smells of duck liver = ETERNAL LOVE – he can come back to school and enjoy smelling her pits neck feet blood body all day long.
He sneaks into her bedroom at night and watches her sleep. All night. Every night. No, that isn’t both creepy and really really boring, that is ROMANTIQUE. Note: to comply with LDS standards, Bella wraps in a quilt before snuggling with her perfect marble statue every night. Mostly because he’s cold as ice. (Willing to sacrifice our love!)
Her free daytime is spent with the Cullens who adore her and can’t wait to convert her to MormonVampirism and seal her for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple to their last unmarried son, Edward.
They all dote on her and buy her things which pisses her off. “Quit using your ill-gotten wealth on me! Not because I have moral qualms with you having said money, but because there has to be conflict! I’m conflicted with you buying me things, THERE, Mr. Editor!”
Well, not everyone loves her. Rosalie is all “check out my IMMORTALITY, BITCH. But I’d give it all up to be mortal AND HAVE BABIES because THAT is how I could TRULY be perfect!” Ah, there’s the rub! (And really? You hate Bella because of her womb, not because she’s lame and whiny? Huh.)
But sometimes the Cullens have to go into the woods on “hikes” so they can eat predators, which they really shouldn’t because that fucks up nature’s balance, but WHATEVER. They go eat some grizzlies and polar bears and mountain lions, which I find hilarious because the cougar is the mascot of BYU. I see what you did there, Smeyers!
Bella wants to die, as bad as Buffy when Angel kisses her. But somehow she doesn’t keel over dead when her boyfriend is gone for a half-second and she’s able to meet the newest doormat in her life, Jacob, a Lamanite. Er, not the people that once were white and because of iniquity were cursed to be brown, copper-flecked injuns of the Book of Mormon, but a Native American Indian filled with interesting lore and a hardon for our Heroick for whatever contrived reason that’s not ever explained.
(Um, trade in the cold marble dude for this hottie. I’m just saying, those drum circles go on for DAYS. Hey-o, euphemism! <– mine, not Smeyers because she doesn’t know that word.)
She can CLEARLY TELL that Jacob is into her, and she pretend flirts with him to get him to talk about Edward. No, that’s not shitty. Instead of talking about Edward, he delivers us a lot of exposition about werewolves and vampires, not believing any of it, himself. His elderly father, who is in a wheelchair and is the leader of the tribe, is Billy.
…could there be something to this shape-shifter wolf thing? We’ll have to wait for Book 2 to get confirmation! I think Billy wishes he could transform into a wolf.
HAHAhAHAHA, that is so wrong, but come on!
Edward comes home and everything goes back to being nice and obsessive.
So… there’s the first 200+ pages of Twilight. Time for some plot/intrigue! The family has a fun Family Home Evening (I didn’t catch if it was Monday night in the book. That would have been AWESOME.) by playing baseball.
Vampire baseball. <– that should mean baby heads for the ball, or something, instead it means they zip around super fast and throw the ball crazy hard. Whee.
SOMETHING FINALLY HAPPENS! A trio of bad vampires (read: they’re Jack Mormons and don’t adhere to the Word of Wisdom, aka vegetarianism) show up and they wanna share the snack. Bella. Quelle horror!
James is the sneaky guy that looks like the follower of the 3 but is the LEADER. Psyche!
He is hot. And a tracker! SMeyer remembered she created special “gifts” for some of the vampires, so she chucks that into the mix. He will ALWAYS be able to find whatever he’s hunting. DUN DUN DUUUUUUN! The Cullens chase them off, but they’ll be back, you’ll see. YOU’LL ALL SEE!!!
Alice freaks and gets a vision of a dance studio. …and James! Time to force some more plot into the mix! Alice and Jasper (because he can keep, like, Bella all mellow and stuff. Put on the B side to Led Zep IV and just let the sensations wash over you, man) take Bella to Phoenix – where the dance/ballet studio is – because James is gonna get her mom! That couldn’t be a ruse could it?
Bella is stupid, though, and doesn’t believe that the vampires with special superpowers can save her from Brad Pitt Lite, and she doesn’t understand fake outs, so she sneaks away to force her character into peril, hoping the audience will give a shit.
And then it is ON like RED DAWN, y’all! Dance Battle in Phoenix!
James spirit fingers Bella’s ass into the glass and breaks her leg, taping the whole thing to make Edward ka-ray-zee with rage so THEY can fight. *head desk*
Edward – of course – manages to get all the way to exactly where she is at exactly the right moment to make out fight James.
This is from the upcoming movie and it makes me laugh.
(They’re totes about to make out.)
Oh, right, our heroine. Edward rips (literally) James to pieces, pulls Bella into a tight embrace (tight embraaaaace!) and she’s saved, no thanks to herself. Yadda yadda, true love, Edward is perfect perfect skin mouth lips hair eyes blah blah and he reminds her of Michelangelo’s David. Which, clearly SMeyers doesn’t know her history, because David was his lover. Wait, look back up at that picture. Maybe she knew after all? hahaha.
She goes back trying to convince Edward to dry hump her, which seriously: that would bruise. He’s marble, remember? Edward is fey a gentleman and will not do anything unseemly, so they snuggle for like, eight pages or some shit. SMeyers is a total cock block, and I’ll tell you something else: the fact that it is always EDWARD (the righteous white male priesthood holder) that controls the situation is so steeped in the church, I can’t even begin. The male needs to be in charge and set the tone, because ladies are either unable to be turned on because of how holy they are, or need the strong, but firm and loving hand of their priesthood holder to guide them. BLECH.
Back to the epilogue, because it’s important to dangle a thread before the buying public. James, now dead, had HIS eternal sealed in the temple met in the pre-existence love with them in the clearing, Victoria, with a fiery head of bright orange hair. And she vows to destroy Bella. Tit for tat. Watch out, Bella! Can her perfect perfect beautiful boyfriend with superpowers possibly save her from a random, seldom mentioned character? I’m dying to find out!!
I started reading twilight before the obsession occurred. I clearly remember after reading the first book explaining to my sister how horrible twilight was, but in the end buying new moon, eclipse, and breaking dawn. Obviously, J.K. Rowling is an exceptionally better writer then Stephenie Meyer, but the character of Edward is so perfect and addicting, that twilight had to become an addicting phenomenon. edward was someone everyone wished they had, or were, and so people continued loving twilight.
I do think that the whole debate is totally pointless. The two books are have totally different plots and are enjoyed by different ages groups and people. However, I would chose Harry Potter over Twilight any day.
First, good post
I think both are great. They’re very different kind of stories, first, because one happens in the real world and the other on a fictional world inside the real world, one has as a main character a girl and the other a guy, one is a total pink romantic story and harry potter has a little bit of almost everything
I hope I’ve made my point, lol
greetings
=D sorry its so long…
I think that Harry Potter is definitely superior. JK Rowling is much more talented with her characters and her story appeals to all genres. There’s a beautiful combination of adventure, survival, and some romance. On the other hand, Twilight is mostly of romance. One reason why Twilight is so popular is because she created something amazing out of vampires, however there are some severe flaws with her story. First and foremost, vampires should not sparkle. Second, Breaking Dawn was off. Renesmee should have aged incredibly slowly if anything! Her mother is a human, and her father is a vampire who doesn’t age. How in the world does Renesmee age incredibly fast? Then, on the topic of Edward Cullen. He seems perfect but no one realizes the strange, strange qualities he has. I don’t understand why any self respecting woman would want to be tied down and not be allowed to see her friends! (Eclipse: Bella isn’t allowed to go see Jacob– This should totally be her decision.) But, the entire debate is which is better, not which is worse and for that I say that Mrs. Rowling is better, rather than Mrs. Meyer. JK Rowlings words bring imagery and life and the reader feels as if they were in the story. I think I felt like I was intruding while reading Twilight. The main characters are so awkward, especially Edward. Jacob and the rest of the Cullens have much more personality. JK Rowling’s books make you happy and sad and have suspense. They are thrilling adventures, and that is why people love them.
Thanks Mike, for FINALLY pointing that out. I’ve been driven mad more than once with talk of Twilight vs. Harry Potter. They’re vicious. But the fights been going on since the dawn of Twilight being relesed, so it’s not new.
i think that ya… it is totally pointless. Personally i love both series. does it have to be a competition? both books have a different demograph and their obective is completely different.
Harry Potter is for both boys and girls and ( at least the earlier books, before they got angsty) anyone can read them as soon as they can read. Twlight, on the other hand, is aimed at females aged 12 to at least thirty; although that is not to say that boys don’t read it or that older women dont read it.
So I think that they are the best in their separate classes though and i can see the love and care when writing them. plus Girl power!
ps- if you look at JK Rowling borrows ALOT of ideas from mythology and folklore, as well as history. so its not as if criticizing her work is so offenses when half the ideas arent hers to begin with. ( not that that’s a bad thing, i still love her books)
harrypotter
I prefer Twilight over Harry Potter (I’ve read all books of each series so I’m well informed of them).
My reason for preferring Twilight is because it’s more grounded in reality than Harry Potter is, yeah there’s vampires & shapeshifters but Meyer made it so life-like. There’s no venom-dripping fangs like you’d see in a Dracula type film. The mystical is immersed in everyday normal life, and I love it.
Harry Potter was too unresolved for me (and in the end it came off being too commercial for my taste, it seemed like she wasn’t writing the series for pleasure but just to get it out there and make more money). There wasn’t enough backstory for me despite what the “Top Contributor” thinks, you didn’t get to get inside the characters’ heads & see how they function, Twilight gave us that while HP did not.
Well that’s my take on the matter!
I love twilight WAY better…Idk..its just something about that movie…Dont get me wrong Harry Potter is Awsome…But im in love with Twilight!!!
i think that Harry Potter is better.
Twilight is stupid. one big thing that drives me crazy; VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE IN THE SUN! NOR CAN THEY BE IN THE SUN! ARGH!
The problem with Twilight is that it truly is one-dimensional. Each of the major characters can be described in 10 words or less.
Bella: pale, weak, human, in love
Edward: pale, strong, vampire, handsome
you get the picture.
But, like mentioned, the characters in Harry Potter are much deeper. You’d be hard pressed to describe Harry’s character in one paragraph, let alone a few words. Each character has his own unique backstory, unlike Twilight.
The only reason Twilight is popular is because it is the dream relationship for girls. But that doesn’t change the fact that it is terrible writing, terrible plot, terrible dialogue, and terrible characters.
I agree that Twilight is one dime dimensional. The story line is not so much about love it seems, as much as an extreme urge on Edward’s part which could be compared to sex realistically. Edward even says in the movie, he is made to be attractive to women. As in most vampire stories, it helps him prey on his victims. Basically there’s no love there. He’s attracted to her for whatever reason, and she’s attracted to him because he’s hot. He doesn’t keep himself from killing her because he loves her, but because he would feel horrible if be killed anyone. The plot is screwed honestly. Just a generic vampire theme. That’s all.
Harry Potter is much better. Its not only about love, its about war, action, friendship, growing up, pain, happiness and so much more. I’m not going to say thats she’s the best author, but she is much better than the Twilight author. Her stories make sense, have twists and turns, and her story is far from generic. She’s truly imaginative. I agree that her characters have WAY much more depth and there’s so much to each of them that most people can relate to the story in some way
Harry Potter is WAY better than Twilight. It has substance, something worth reading.
well i have to say the question in total is pointless… Harry Pooter v.s Twilight… i really loved the Twilight books (read them in 4 1/2 days time) and the whole Edward thing, i’m not the kind of girl who falls or crushes on celbreties or Fan Made characters lol.. sorry but that’s just, crazy, weird, and well many more things i could say but i prefer to keep it short and simple.
. both are great movies by my opinion, i would never chose since there are things i dislike and like about both.
hehe, it sounds more realistic than Dracula and Werewolf stuff.
i never read the Harry Potter Books since i prefer to wait for the movie and i never would have thought of reading one of J’s books especially at like 11 yrs old lol.
Also i really don’t understand why girls freak out over Robert Pattinson’s hair and ect.. that’s just weird, first off, you girls freak out over some guy who showers roughly… 1 every 2 or weeks …. umm yeah grosse.. lol. And he’s not beautiful or gorgeous, he’s nothing NEAR that. Anywho, i’m excited to see the 2nd movie of Twilight as well as the 6th movie of Harry Potter
and yes Edward in the book seems like a creepy stalker, truely if i was “Bella”, i’d be back in Pheonix! And i would not like a guy staring at me while i sleep, that’s just wrong o.O , but the thing abotu Twilight in an odd way it kind of makes Vampires seem real
I think it’s silly to debate about it, really; the plots are very different and thus, the stories as very different as well.
I personally enjoy Harry Potter more. I have been a fan since before it was popular. I have read all the books and am planning on rereading them soon. There is just something about them that is wonderful; I personally enjoy J.K. Rowling’s creative and funny descriptions of behavior, such as in The Deathly Hallows, she writes, “His parents looked at Dudley as though he had just expressed a desire to become a ballerina.” All of the books were excellent reading, I don’t remember ever reading one and saying, “Wow, I was disappointed.”, it was always, “Wow! Can’t wait for the next one!” (or, in the case of Deathly Hallows, “Wow, what a great end to a monumental series, I am sad it is over, though.”) I love how Rowling encompasses everything into her books: drama, action, romance, suspense, mystery and humor.
Now, my feelings on Twilight: My interest having been piqued by its sudden explosion into popularity, I decided to buy a copy of it and see if it was any good. I didn’t quite know what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it quite a lot, however, please know that, although I am a teenage girl, I am not and will never will be an Edward-Cullen-obsessed-nutjob who hates anyone who doesn’t like the book. Everyone has their own opinions.
I will always love Harry more, they are my favorite books ever. =]
It really is crazy on how many of these Twilight v. Harry Potter debates are around but doesn’t it phase anyone that those two books are completely different from one another? There shouldn’t be a competition over this. As for writer Stephen King and anyone who bashes the writing of Stephanie Meyer, deserves a good reality check…I’m sure a lot of you can agree with me on this one…The importance of a really great book is how it affects you and not how it’s written…Shouldn’t we celebrate the fact that more young adults are reading now than getting on their case on whats better and whats not??…My two cents
I have read and enjoyed both at different stages of my life, and have gone through phases where I was “obsessed” with each of them. Twilight seemed to have better conflicts, as the main conflict is one that most people have at some point–choice. It’s that simple, but a fun read. Harry Potter, however, is-as a friend put it-classic good vs. evil.
Stephenie Meyer’s writing definitely isn’t the best, however. But if you read for enjoyment, and try not to pay attention to her writing style (or lack of) you can enjoy a pretty good read.
I also think Twilight is geared more towards teenagers, while Potter may be intended more for “tweens.”
I believe it is completely pointless. Harry Potter is a great best-seller. Twilight is simply another “best-seller” that everyone loves. These books have no real facts, and no one can scientifically prove that one is better than the other. Whether you like either or not is 100% opinion. Basically, you could compare one really bad book that isn’t thought out well or very mixed and choppy (all together bad), to a greatly strewn together book, with wonderful planning and different twists put into it, and you’ll still get people who like the really bad one. The debates could literally last forever.
I personally like Harry Potter soooo much better. I mean no offence to Twilight lovers but I can’t stand the books and movie/s. Harry Potter is just more exciting and thrilling where Twilight is just a romance. I have nothing against Twilight (its a pretty good series) I am just tired of hearing so much about it. GO HARRY POTTER!!!
There is no way I can compare both. I have started to read Harry Potter way back when I was 14 while I have only read Twilight recently. I have always love Harry Potter and I am willing to spend hundreds just so I can own Harry Potter DVDs and books. However, for Twilight, I do like the books but I am not so sure about the movie, especially the first one. Since the second one is upcoming, I will have to watch that to decide if it is worth watching again and again. I love Harry Potter because JK Rowling is so detailed about each characters. Twilight on the other hand is told in Bella’s perspective, unlike Harry Potter, a third-person’s perspective. I guess there is no way we can compare both since they are of different themes and styles.
I don’t see the point. Let people read what they want. Jeez.
I also love Twilight, but not OCD like those girls:)
I’ve got to admit Harry Potter is an exquisite book series.
I also love the movie, going to go see Half-Blooded Prince this Friday.
But I just don’t like it, when people complain and argue that Twilight sucks.
Here is what I have to go say:
If you hated the movie, go blame Catherine Hardwicke.
If you didn’t like the book series, go complain to Stephanie Meyer.
I am so tired of people trashing Twilight.
Dude, stop hating.
It’s so annoying.
Many of the complainers haven’t even read all four books.
If you hate it sooo much, than stop talking about it.
They probably just don’t understand the pretext and language Stephanie uses.
And for Stephen King to say that, he’s just jealous that the Twilight franchise is bigger and got famous in an instant it came out.
So that’s all I have got to say:)
while i do prefer the harry potter books, i reallly don’t see the point in all this. who cares which book is supposedly “better”? if you think about it neither is. the books offer different things and have a completely different story. i don’t see much resemblance other than the fact that they both contain werewolves. i must say the werewolf in harry potter is much more in keeping with mythology though.
Ummm harry, no competition. Okay, so basically Twilight just jumps right into the story and its very intense and heavy but harry potter take sit gradually and you get more attached. I cant believe anyone would try to compare the two. Twilight is just as realistic, what makes vampires and werewolves more realistic than witches and wizards.
harrry potterrr.!
)
Harry Potter is by no means a masterpiece, but it’s definitely a lot better. On the imagination scale, J.K Rowling has done a lot more in developing a new world. She has created laws, controversies, races, conflicts, social problems and displays all this in a way that’s easy for children to understand. All Meyer did was steal traditional vampire myths. From the pale white skin, red hair, golden eyes, absence of fangs, good looks and super powers. Almost every single detail of Meyer’s vampires are stolen from stereotypes. The only aspects of Meyer’s vampires that she actually created are the most advertised and stupid. The glittering stone skin and ‘vegetarianism’ for example. Rowling has created a unique universe that intertwines with the real world fabulously (the reference to Nicholas Flamel in the first book made my day). Meyer’s world is stolen from old myths, and what isn’t stolen is unbelievably ridiculous. The ‘Volturi’, for example, are awful. The are leaders and regarded as ‘royalty’ because they have lived the longest? That’s silly. The idea of vampire social class is a little …stupid. But some artists could at least make it work. Why couldn’t the Volturi be regarded in such a manner because they had developed some skill, or were the vampire incarnates of richer, important people so social class transcended in vampire afterlife? There were so many plot holes it was shocking that people could ever call it ‘realistic’. Finally, Rowling clearly did her research, knowing the names of real alchemists and myths to enhance her story. Meyer even said she did not research vampire mythology before writing the series..
The morals are different too. Rowling’s stories have some great morals, some are simple and others are more complex. But they offer children and teenagers good role models and inspiration. For example, Hermione, the lead female character in Harry Potter, is a smart girl. She works especially hard at everything she does, tries to be a good person but obviously has flaws. Bella, on the other hand, wants to risk her life by cliff jumping because Edward left her. It’s obvious who is the better role model. Harry, for instance, simply wants to make friends with people (at least in the first few books), is kind and humble. When Harry begins to have romantic relationships in his teenaged years, he is kind and sympathetic to his love interests. Edward Cullen, the main hero of Twilight, falls in love with Bella Swan. Unlike Harry, who simply asked his interests out, Edward decided to creep into her room without her permission and watch her sleep. But according to Meyer and the fans, this isn’t scary, illegal or wrong. It’s romantic because he loves her. Well, didn’t lots of intimacy seeking stalkers love their prey as well? But because Edward has such a beautiful vocabulary, accompanied by good looks, his SEX CRIME is overlooked. But don’t worry! This isn’t the first time a man has proven that his alleged sex crime isn’t wrong by means of language! I remember Humbert Humbert in ‘Lolita’ making his acts of pedophilia seem acceptable with his stunning language.
Edward Cullen, who is 104 (108 in the film) is dating Bella Swan who ranges from being seventeen to nineteen throughout the series. But it isn’t pedophilia because biologically as a vampire he’s seventeen. Meyer suggest through this that as long as your physically of age, nothing else matters. So men who take good care of their bodies well enough to resemble a teenager is a teenager therefore (and may be with teenaged girls as well)! Or, if you’re underage but are physically like an adult, you can have sex with someone older and it’s not pedophilia because you’re an adult physically! Your mental age and comprehension is irrelevant. Well, according to Meyer it is. Finally, if Edward truly is 17, then wouldn’t Bella Swan be a pedophile when she turns 18 and 19 in the final books? Of course not, says Meyer. Now, whenever you mention such an argument to the fans (Or even Meyer), they simply say ‘you’re reading into it too much!’.
Point is, the only truly controversial thing about Harry Potter is the subject of witchcraft. Twilight however, can be accused of pedophilia (Bella, Jacob and Edward), sexism, sexual abuse, implying that without a boyfriend you are useless, and that physical harm is alright if it serves a romantic purpose (the second book and how Bella puts herself at risk to hear Edward’s voice….IN HER HEAD.)
I have never heard of Harry Potter causing children to do anything stupid. Other than some fans who over obsess and dedicate all their time to it. But all large fandoms (Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.) have fans like this. Of course it’s unacceptable and Rowling herself even commented on overzealous shippers (people who like two character in a relationSHIP) Harry Potter has done a lot of good things, even inspiring teenagers and kids to pursue a career in art themselves. But the response for Twilight I’ve seen seem mostly negative. There have been groups of fans who have done some good things because of it, but the majority are just screaming fangirls. I even once heard some twelve year old girls exchange this little speech:
Girl1: So Bella tried jumping off a cliff for Edward! She nearly drowned!
Girl2: Really?
Girl1: Yes!
Girl2: ….That sounds reasonable.
Girl1: Exactly. That’s what love is ALL about. I want to find someone who would do something like that for me.
Overall, Twilight is filled with overly flowery language, pathetic attempts at characters (and even worse attempts to make them seem educated to little girls. Please Bella, you don’t understand The Bell Jar. Or, after seeing what you did for Edward, maybe you do…), and one of the most abusive relationships off all time. It offers no real messages (Bella wanted to finish school and not have children. Guess who doesn’t go to college and has a baby at 18?) that are actually decent. Harry Potter is good for children because it’s more imaginative, actually funny, doesn’t try to seem ‘witty’ or ‘hip’, and most importantly, doesn’t romanticize abusive relationships.

I love Twilight but i haven’t seen much Harry Potter but i still am gonna go with Twilight!
HP is an amazing story written by a very good writer! The movies appeal to all ages; though any kid under the age of 8 is not really interested. I must admit it is a money making machine and it has done well, but it has run its course!
Twilight caught me by surprised. I got to watched the movie to please my 10 year old daughter who has never wanted to sit thru a HP movie or read any of the books, even at the pleads of her father who loves anything HP. She not only watched the movie but has read all 4 books, as I have sinced watching the movie. Twilight is not the kind of book you read once or want to put down. Is their time now (Twilight), to shine and shine they will. Is amazing to see kids, teens, middle ages and senior citizen (all of both sexes) reading this incrediable story!!! I have fallen in love with the whole vampire story and I must say Twilight is the Love Story of our times! Remenber Romeo & Juliet, Love Story? Well these kids are amazingly talented and their good looks can NOT be ignored!!!
With that said I have to say Twilight beats HP in my opinion hands down!!!
Well for me ;
i grew up watching / reading harry potter ;
so that was elementary school for me .
& i was in middle school when i started obsessing over twilight.
so by the time im a highschooler twilight like ended for me .
But personally if i had to choose out of the two i would choose Harry Potter !
I re-read those books more than i re-read the twilight books(: .
twilight is a really good book series and an awesome movie. for me, i like harry potter too. and i still wonder today, “Why are poeple fighting over this?” If some people want to read twilight, then fine. if some people perfer harry potter, that’s okay too. everyone has a tital to there opinion, but not everyone can make people like what they like. i perfer twilight, but that’s just me. who am i to juge harry potter?
Harry Potter, of course.
Twilight is way better
The Twilight series, while semi-entertaining because of the cheesy lines, does not have the same quality of writing that J.K. Rowling exhibits. Her storyline and creation of a whole world filled with it’s own protagonists and antagonists is truly captivating to read. And really, the reason why Twilight is immensely popular is because of a hunky, 100 some year old man in conquest of a high schooler.
The hell with twilight harry potter no competion yes twilight was good but harry potter was better every potter book was amazing always making you want to read on but twilight was okay. ther first book was amazing but the rest fell flast (expecily the last on)
and rob (is tht his name?) looks like he’s on major drugs on every film thou on the potter film ( Goblet of Fire) he was a young fella and looks better and not like he had a hangover
Another thing… There is no way to compare harry potter to twilight because they are two different worlds. harry potter comes from the world of magic, spells, and talking hats. but twilight comes from the world of vampires and romance. if you like magic spells and potions and things like that, cool. if you like vampires, romance, and things like that, cool. you are all free to like whatever you want.
I think Harry Potter is better. Twilight is good too, but not as good as HP. The 1 thing that really shocked me was that i was watching an interview with stephenie meyer. The reporter asked, “You have been called the next J.K Rowling, what is your response to this?” And SM actually replied, “I disagree, bla bla bla, i have my own way of writing, bla.” If it wasME, i would have said I was HONORED to be called the next J.K Rowling. I seriously thought, bitch, just because one book that you wrote got famous, doesn’t mean you can disrespect J.K Rowling who has had a fantastic sale and has been respected throughout the world with her hp books. I’m just saying…
Harry Potter > Twilight
True Blood > Twilight
I think that people will read whatever they want but in my opinion i think that the Harry Potter series are WAY better than the twilight ones. Each HP character is decribed entirely and has their own personality but i find that in twilight you cant really image them because Meyer just says “they are beautiful, and pale.” What i love about the HP series is that they all entwine into each other; little details that you didn’t notice before in the first books become important in the later series. I just think that J.K. Rowling is an amazing writer. J.K. Rowling and Meyer have different writing styles, but i prefer J.K.’s more descriptive style
I enjoy both series. The characters in Harry Potter go through more changes so far (I haven’t read all the Twilight books). They also tend to be unpredectable (such as Snape). While so far the twilight characters are staying ground in thier thinking. The enviroment in twilight causes twist. That said Twilight is more mature sounding then Harry Potter. However, Harry Potter started out with the major characters as children. The books somewhat changed when they get older (I do enjoy the Potter books when the characters become young adults). As much as I love vampires and werewolves is has been done lately (Underworld anyone?). The good thing is vampires and werewolves have become more developed characters. However, not much fantasy has been done on witches and wizards. So you have to give credit for Rowling for writing on a subject that has not been written that much about. The only flaw I could think of for Harry Potter is that it could had been made more believable such as making realistic magic, rituals, and culture for the witches and wizards. Maybe this wasn’t done because it would make some people uncomfortable.
Twilight appeals to younger women, many of which are already HP fans.
I don’t know why there is a contest here, HP has a MUCH bigger fanbase.
It really depends on who you are because both books center around different things.
Some people prefer lots of action and little romance to lots of romance and little action. Me? I’m a romance girl so, weather or not Edward is in your opinion ‘creepy’ or whatever, Twilight would be the obvious choice, because there is more of what I personally crave.
In Harry Potter, there is tons of action and some romance in there. However, there wasn’t nearly enough romance for my tastes so I put the book series down after Chamber Of Secrets.
Everybody’s opinion differs. Having these debates about the two books is pointless; no one will win. Just because you may think Twilight stunk and is an insult to literature doesn’t mean that it is. I thank God everyday that Twilight haters don’t decide what good literature is, otherwise I’d be bored to tears.
Honestly, some of these people need to get lives. Why start things like this, just to get people angry? There are people are starving over in Africa, dying of diseases that have cures simply because no one gave them proper medicine, and we’re sitting here, tearing down two books that are meant for pure enjoyment. Stephenie Meyer and J.K. Rowling don’t have a problem with each other; why do their fans? It makes no sense to me.
But whatever. That’s my opinion and it may not matter to you.
Neither. I hate this question because you can’t compare the two. They’re two very different books. Yeah they’re both supernatural, but the stories are so different it IS like comparing apples to a bowling ball. It’s like comparing Stephen King to Nora Roberts; different writer, different style, a completely different plot and characters.
Until today, I was obsessed with twilight. Today when I saw the Haryy Potter and the Half Blood Prince I realized how stupid Twilight is! It has no plot whatsoever!
Bella! The stupidest character ever! Always relying on someone to save her! She never knows what she wants! “I love Edward!” “No wait! I love Jacob!’ Make up your stupid mind.
And Only one of the Twilight books are good and interesting. But unlike Twilight, ALL the harry potter books are AMAZING!
Think about it before all u crazy twilight ppl (used to be me) give me a thumbs down.
Harry Potter Forever!!!!!!!!!!
i think harry potter is much better. thers no denying that harry potter is a much more well written series, plus more original.
harry potter is all the same. harry gets in trouble and the ngets out of it. wow. 7 movies of that? i think not! but the twilight saga is all different. first something happens to bella then jacob then everyone then bella and edwards freinds and family. its all different and they dont have the same caracters the whole time twilight has more every movie. i vote twilight=)
You really can’t compare them because as some people have already pointed out, one’s an action and one’s a romance. People love twilight because Stephanie Meyer has the amazing ability to bring you into the story and lets all her (female) readers connect to Bella on some level at least. And people love HP because its freakin awesome, but as an action.
I thought Rob Pattinson was hot BEFORE Twilight.
I’m bitter.
I hate all those damn fangirls. I would have given Twilight a try if it weren’t for them.
After reading all the answers from HP fans, I’m definitely not trying Twilight. I’ll stick to the real author, thanks.
Harry Potter, hands down. For one thing, the characters have depth, which is more than I can say for Twilight’s, and they have believable backstories. And the series actually has a plot.
It’s blatantly obvious that Bella is a self-insertion of Meyer herself in the book (seriously, have you read Meyer’s description of Bella? Compare the description of Bella’s face to her own on Wikipedia later if you haven’t), and even her characters (if you can call them that) seem to be taken from other characters from various other places.
For example, Jacob Black and Sirius Black: both can transform into dog-like animals (J: werewolf, S: dog). Coincidence?
And seriously, sparkling vampires? WTH?
Plus, JK Rowling manages to take historical fiction and mythology and artfully combine it into her story, unlike Meyer, who uses stereotypical legends to make her story more appealing.
And, ultimately, Harry Potter ACTUALLY HAS A PLOT!! The protagonist has to undergo several challenges and self-realization before he can finally defeat his arch-nemesis. What’s Twilight’s plot? Bella, with (A LOT OF) help from Edward and his family, must stay alive while trying to escape a vampire who wants to kill her, just so she can have a baby with Edward by the end of the 4th story? (I can’t even call it a book anymore)
Analyzing Twilight, it’s basically Meyer’s pointless fantasy where she’s the object of every guy’s attention in high school and has to be saved by some dashing (sparkling!) knight in shining armor, because, of course, she’s in danger for absolutely no fault of her own.
Yeah…
Final verdict:
Harry Potter > Stephanie Meyer’s wet dream
Because you know a generation has epicly failed when their vampires sparkle.
twilight is good but harry potter is a lot better no question
There are pluses and minuses to both of these books and movies. Twilight is romantic, has a strong mood and has some HOT stars! Harry Potter is different from many books/movies, the characters have strong relationships and it’s an extreme adventure.
But in my opinion Harry Potter is superior! I will probaby cry once all the movies have ened, there will be no more Harry Potter. Ever since I was 4 (when Harry Potter came out) I saw the movie, evrey summer I would see the latest Harry in the theatre. I also started to read the seris when I was ten. It’s hard to explane, but I have a big felling Harry Potter and it’s writer J. K. Rowling could beat Steaphine Myer and her sack of vampire love storys. Well not a felling, I know!
Having read only a brief excerpt of Twilight, my argument may be flawed, but I believe that each book holds different merit. Bella’s one-dimensional-ness allows for the reader to assume her position more, to “put themselves in her position”. The downfall of this is that the character never really experiences a true growth.
The Harry Potter novels were one of the few stories to ever move me to tears. It’s not the prose that’s extremely elegant, but the character ensemble, one that is rivalled by very few books in existence. Twilight seemed to me like a chocolate cake with extra frosting; sinfully delicious but too sweet.
As for the argument that Twilight’s more realistic, that may be true, since the only thing Edward has in common with vampires is his teeth.
I think that the twilight saga is much better than harry potter. The books to me are much more intresting.
but everyone likes different things
twilight only appeals to young girls, harry potter has a wide range of readers, young and old, male and female. there’s no dispute here.
I think that comparing the two books is quite unfair, while both mix science-fiction with romance and what is classically called ‘teen angst,’ they were written entirely differently. JK Rowling’s work is far superior, and in my opinion, will go down in history forever. Already, I see references to the books in other pop fiction novels. But, for those who do not appreciate classic literature, Twilight is for them, it allows readers to divulge into a world they wish they had with little thought. It was written for the sole purpose to attract readers, which it does well at–considering most of the population nowadays would prefer watching TV to reading anyway. I feel that reading Twilight is much like watching TV, whereas, reading harry potter requires much more motivation and brain power, not to mention imagination.
To me, Harry Potter was written much better than Twilight, it has a stronger plot, not only through each book, but through the entire series. It has deeper, more thought out characters, and much better descriptions.
The two books were written for entirely different audiences, Harry Potter for those who like to read, and Twilight for those who prefer not to, unless it’s something like Gossip Girl or the A-List. (And yes, I do find twilight similar to series’ like that, ones who I wouldn’t consider a novel.
Harry Potter is 10X better. There’s not even a competition. Reading twilight, I felt like I was in a 5th grade book club. JK Rowling is a FAR better writer than.. whatever the other woman’s name is. You can tell how much thought and research and planning JK Rowling took to write the Harry Potter novels. All the different twists and secrets within all 7 books that all fit together and reveal themselves throughout. All the characters have a lot of different dimensions. There’s so many twists, like Snape for example, and Draco’s mom turning out to be kind of nice and saving Harry’s life! Harry Potter is by far the best thing ever. Twilight is for people who want a fast read that’s mushy and everything is just a big happy ending. And it’s more realistic? How? She wanted to make it all happy. I never read the last two of that series, and I don’t plan to. But I’ve heard how it ends. Can you say LAME? And vampires don’t sparkle in the sun. At least JK Rowling sticks to the correct mythology. And the twilight MOVIE??? You kidding me? It was a joke. I can’t believe anyone likes it. It was painful to watch. I admit Harry Potter movies aren’t as good as the books and some of the movies, especially the early ones, aren’t that fantastic, but they are marginally better than Twilight. Books > Movies, always. But Harry always trumps Twilight.
One thing, if someone wanted to write a series about a far away land where teen wizards attend scool and learn magic and fight dark wizards, people would go crazy, claiming that this is copying Jo’s work.
There are millions of other series about vampires and forbiden love, and noone is claiming that those authors copied S Meyer
I like both series but I would have to say that I prefer “Harry Potter.” The “Harry Potter” books are more interesting to read and I have a thing for magic/sorcery.
I like both i have read both series and think they are both very good. But if i was forced to choose one i would chose J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series. It is very in depth and if you have a creative mind you can follow the book and always know whats going on, she brings things from the first book all the way to the last and doesnt reexplain everything unlike twilights author. She reexplains the whole book that was just read which of course for others is good if you havent read it in order but someone going from book to book continuously does not want a recap of the book just read also twilight skips around goes to memories without telling the reader and worst of all doesn’t close all the gaps at the end of the last book, while harry potter is stone cold closed there is nothing you have to sit there and wonder about knowing you will never get the answer.
I think Twilight is better in the sence that harry potter has been out for 4-7 years and twilight has only been out for a year so it is normal for the harry potter books have more fans. But in a couple of years twilight is going to be worldwide known but until know it is too early to know wich one is better & i belive that twilight is more realistic because it is not a school hidden in a magical place. And wizards doing potions. Twilight is in a actual state with people that could be alive. But you never know Vampire could be real like alians.
excuse my grammar
well,i read both, and twilight is predictable, since the beginning of eclipse.she loves jake and edward and then she ends up with the vamp.technically thats somehow the reason for this, right?human and vamp.harry potter is awesome and full of twists.i luv it,Harry Potter ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! =)
I’m honestly a fan of both, HOWEVER, harry potter has universal appeal while twilight is more for young teenage girls like myself X ) Also, I think we should keep in mind that JK Rowling has created an entire new world while Stephanie Meyers simply toyed with the whole vampire idea.
I think both are equally great. Harry potter gives you backstories, and explains everything, while Twilight is just addicting.
Wow like okay Harry Potter and magic. Isn’t realistic neither is Twilights vampries I love then both.
Espescially for:
JADE
people need to put there wands & brooms away & make room for twilight
Twilight is simply, in it’s plainest form, a deplorable, appalling piece of incomprehensible putridity.
For Christ’s sake, it praises relationship abuse!
He steals her engine so she can’t see her friends.
He threatens to commit suicide if she leaves him.
He stalks her.
He kisses her while she’s trying to say something and gives her no chance to voice an opinion.
And then he takes away all of her gifts in New Moon!
Talk about unstable.
Not to mention the glaring plot holes.
If he’s over 100, why does he NEED to go to high school? Can’t he go and live his amazing immortal life with the only downside that his skin gets slightly sparkly?
Oh, and ANOTHER thing.
Calling Edward a ‘vampire’ is like calling a three-horned, spotted, radioactive, man-eating horse a unicorn.
Harry Potter isn’t a beautiful piece of literature that will be remembered for it’s symbolic and philosophical meanings, no.
But it IS much much better than Twilight in writing style, plot, and symbolism.
Harry Potter no competition
I would say it is like comparing chalk and cheese, what is the point?
I would say Twilight is more realistic if you look at the underlying themes and not just the bleedingly obvious vampires. Comparing an epic lovestory and fantasy novels aimed at young adolescents is useless.
In regard to the writing style, they are both good authors in their own right and hardly comparable. Stephenie Myers had me in tears throughout the four book series and allowed the reader to fall in love with Edward Cullen.
I should think that many people that have only seen the movie have missed the element of fatal attraction and the references to Romeo and Juliet. Edward Cullens beauty does not really play in, it is the way he loves her and cares for her and sacrifices for her. I really doubt that the girls are falling in love with Robert Pattinsons good looks (or lack thereof) they are falling in love with the character he portrays and nothing more.
For those that suggest there is no action or suspense, I suggest they read New Moon because I highly doubt they will portray the excitement in the movie that the book did.
If you were to compare the first Harry Potter and the ‘Twilight’ novel, I should think Stephenie Myers trumps JK, but Stephenie Myers writing style is often repetitive and changed in Breaking Dawn to appeal to a VERY teenaged audience, I also think she could not continue for another three books in the saga.
There is also reason to believe that Stephenie Myer took ideas from a series called True Blood.
At the end of the day they appeal to different readers with different tastes. I personally choose the vivid imagery and endless lovestory to a juvenile fantasy novel, that may have a lot to do with being a woman!
In regard to popularity, I am fairly certain that Twilight will surpass Harry Potter. Harry Potter caters to a rather specific age group and many of the original readers have moved on to more adult ideas. Twilight on the other hand was originally written for adults, it is just a shame the movie franchise is so awfully teeny bopper, even talking of recruiting Vaness Hudgens. =[
I like Twilight better. GO TWILIGHT! Stephenie Meyer is an amazing author.
Twilight sucks balls now! This huge obsession creeps me out! >:( I hate it! Harry is better! And who the hell loves a pale agressive vampire? How is it more realistic with a vampire and characters like James?! Nope. Pure fiction. :3nod
Twilight should not even be compared to Harry Potter. It sucks too much.
Rowling is by far the superior writer, and her characters are detailed and believable– Meyer’s characters are bland, predictable, and all too PERFECT.
twilight is romantic. harry potter is not really. i’ve read HP. but yeah, twilight tickles me as well. i gotta say rowling ‘writes’ better.
like apples and bowling balls, definitely
wait, twilight is more realistic????? lol.
Twilight is as realistic as pigs flying. I don’t know who wrote that, but that person needs a good reality check. I’m finishing up book 4 of Twilight, so obviously I’m a fan, but the only thing that lured me into this franchise was the way the author described how Mr. Edward Cullen to be. Yes, he’s a obsessive, possessive, over protective, stalker boyfriend, but he has other traits that overshadows all these flaws which many girls don’t notice, but the main trait was his physical characteristic- which won over the hearts of many girls.
I’m not a Harry Potter fan, and will probably never be one, so I can’t really put my two cents into which is better.
I do think Stephanie Meyer did a pretty darn good job with her poor writing to get crazy teen girls and bored Moms to anxiously wait for every book and take in every page like it’s a bible.
Harry Potter will always be the better book. It has always been popular and is amazingly written. Twilight only became popular when the movie came out and everyone saw how hot robert pattinson is(i personly disagree). Harry Potter appeals to everyone and i think is very imaginative and must have taken JKR to make spells and names that aply to the object they are naming. Harry Potter is better because it is more creative, but Stephenie is still an amazing author also
not compatible
Oh, and I forgot, Edward is one hell of a pedophile also. He’s been living for 100 odd years, so technically, his mind should be like an old man, but he’s just not aging physically. That’s hella creppy.
Harry Potter ..HP of course!!!!!!!!
Twilight is great! but c’mon..JK’s work is by far the best !
The disadvantage of the Twilight series is that it is aimed at the female sex. I have not known of a single male to read the Twilight series. On the other hand though, I myself have read the entire Harry Potter series. Another reason Harry Potter is the better series will probably be because there are four more books in it’s series than Twilight.
In conclusion, I see the Twilight series as “one dimentional” in interested readers as opposed to Harry Potter which has a broader audience.
i used to think it was cool. and of course i used to always say twilight. which was pointless cuz i have never read harry potter… now that im reading it… i watched all the movies. there amazing! but it hasnt taken me away from twilight. the more u think about the movies the harder it gets to compare them… seriously, i think there nothing alike, pointless to compare.
I enjoy each series equally. I have been a Harry Potter die hard fan for years and when Twilight became big, I fell in love with it too. Both authors do a spectactular job at writing, letting the reader see the story from different angles all at the same time. Movie-wise, I think Twilight could have had better people to represent the characters but they will do. As long as they bring the story alive, its O.K. Harry Potters cast is amazing and I don’t think I would change any of them. I do think the director for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince did an awesome job with this film, can’t wait to see the final movie ( of course in its two parts) and wish Twilight movies would pick up some director like that for it’s series.
Harry Potter is better. Reading it is a pleasure.
Twilight? A torture for me. I hate it for bearing the title of being a ” vampire novel”. It seems to have a science fiction background rather than a story with myths—- The vampires are like X-men (and I like X-men more). And the whole story is just about romance!!! As a vampire-fiction fan (who also loves romance), this is not at all a good work. HP dones well in every aspect—-romance, magic etc. and although the story line is predictable, it’s miraculously good to read. Twilight, the opposite.
Both books are amazing but you really can’t compare them. They are totally different. I believe that the people that say Twilight is better mostly like it be cause you “get inside” the narrator’s head. While you don’t in Harry Potter, it’s arguable that Potter is better because it’s more unrealistic than Twilight. Once again I love both and I don’t truly believe you can say one is “better”
Harry Potter vs. Twilight. For me, it is Harry Potter any day. Twilight is a rather good read, and the plot line is intriguing enough, but the rest (characters and such) is so one-dimensional, and for me, quite rankly annoying. Bella cannot stop whining and is much to sheep-like for me. Some of the characters, Alice, Victoria, even Rosalie I enjoy more then our sheep-like heroine.
Harry Potter on the other hand, an intriguing read for all books, the plot line is interesting, the characters draw you in, and it is well put together. I have enjoyed reading each series, but its HP hands down for me, any day.
Well I personally Love both! I love the Harry Potter Movies better then the books personally. I think it’s just cause I’m not partial to the way they are written as much as Twilight. But I HATED they twilight movie, Robert Pattinson is such a creeper and shouldn’t have been picked to play the part of Edward and Kristen Stewart has a man voice and isn’t as pretty as I imagined Bella, even though I also pictured her plain, average, but definitely not as UGLY as Kristen Stewart!
To add onto what I said before, one major problem people seem to have is character backgrounds…if you think about it you can’t do that in Twilight because it’s only what Bella knows,HELLO!!!
Harry Potter, without a doubt.
Twilight was awful, in my opinion. It was illogical, the characters were irritating, creepy and unrealistic. The writing was absolutely atrocious.
The Harry Potter brought my childhood a lot of joy. Twilight just caused me to want to slap the preteen girls who fawned over the creepy, stalkerish Jacob, constantly and publically.
Twilight is just porn for the preteen, Miley-loving, Jonas-coveting girls
Twilight!!!!
Neither of the books are realistic.
They are *fantasy* books.
As in, they will never happen.
No matter how avid the fans are.
I thought that Twilight lacked plot, depth, and character development
Whereas Harry Potter on the other hand, has all those things, on a wide spectrum.
Both authors are undeniably brilliant, yet J.K. Rowling earned her publicity through talent, not hot characters.
We can’t really compare the two since they are different writing styles.
But, i suppose that isn’t going to stop people from trying.
I think twilight kick harry potter butt! The difference between twilight and harry potter is, twilights a love story/adventure movie and harry potter is just a adventure movie. twilight has 2 in one. Girls like love storys and guys like adventuous there ya have it!
No competition. Harry Potter wins, IMO because it is way more original. I mean, who’d ever think of creating a story about wizards and a school with all of the stuff that goes on? Twilight is just another romance novel, and half of the fans are girls that obsess over Edward.
twilight:)
As hard as it seems to beleive, I happen to like both series. As a teenager, I loved the romance between Bella and Edward, and the problems that Bella had to face because I could relate to some of them. I most admit I had a hard time putting down the books, like many have said before it draws you into the story.Twilight entertained me and remains one of my favorite books. However, I love Harry Potter to death .It too is one of my favorite books (it’s at the top of the list whereas Twilight is near the bottom). Harry Potter has an amazing story where Harry Potter fights Voldemort to his death in the last book. Although as many of people have said, it is not only abouth the conflict beteen the two characters (which I think is the downfall of Twilight). Harry Potter also involves romance, friendship, the battle between good and evil in all of us, and comedy ( I will always love Fred and George). I most admit I only started reading Harry Potter after I saw Order of the Pheniox becuse at the same time I saw nearly everyone reading Deathly Hallows (even the ticket holder when I went to go see the movie). They all had their eyes glued to the book and seemed to be out of this world (it tooke awhile for the ticketholder to notice us). At the end of the movie, my cousin (who was with me when i saw the movie) was slightly disapponted in the movie and recomend me to read all the books. I saw it as a challenge(and a way to feel the same emotins as the people I saw ready Deathly Hallows) and read all of them the same summer. Ever since then Harry Potter has become a part of my life and now that the sereies is coming to a close (I refered to the movies when I said that ) I feel that a part is living me. Harry potter is one of the only books that allowed me to become a part of the literature. It is still the only book that I cried when people died, or got mad (especially when snape killed Dumbledor ( I wanted to murder him). Harry Potter wil forever in my oppion be better then Twilight.
JK Rowling will be remembered forever as a great writer and when she does die people from around world will be sad. Stepheine Meyer will be remember for maybe a couple more years untill the twilight craze will die down.
wat the wtf?
twilight!
its a romance and very interesting
harry potter is good but i got bored by the 3rd movie and i wouldnt dare pick up the second book
its like no fkn end tew a gay wizard
and twighlt is sweet short and simply fantastic!
TWILIGHT FOREVER!!!!!!<3
EDWARD IS SEXY
AND SO IS JACOB!
yum!:D
In my opinion obviously twilight sounds more realistic than that of Harry Potter but that’s not to say that both are credible, so there is no denying that the two films and novels is its literal aspect, and have acquired a good captive audience that knows differentiate and appreciate the work of both films and writings. Harry Potter knows have the suspense of the plot in every movie made and addiction in film shows that although teenagers have their situations which makes them grow and strengthen their spirit and enthusiasm for things to them but obviously not as great as which he was present, however twilight we can not forget that even science fiction presents a situation that happens a lot in today’s society and depression and more on young people who think they can not live without that someone particular, unlike the solutions she decides to move ahead even if the risk, because it addresses the risk of life and not let it happen the only thing she looks the danger is different.
I like Harry Potter much better. I couldn’t even get into Twilight, I found it much to dull.
Also the idea of “sparkely vampires” doesn’t quite fly with me. I do like my vampires to be handsome, however I also like for them to be psychotic and bloodthristy, but thats just me :\
J.K. Rowling is by far the superior writer. I think anyone who looks at these stories subjectively as just two different works, and don’t get their feelings involved (ie wizards vs vampires or Harry’s not as hot as Edward), would see that Stephenie Meyer is an elementary writer at best, and that Rowling will go down in history with the likes of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien.
Have whatever opinion you may about vampires being sexier then wizards or more realistic(which is a load of bollocks because how can one fictional creature be more real then another?) but when it comes down to sheer talent, Rowling is the superior author and thereby making the Harry Potter franchise the better of the two.
Okay so i have read both series and like them both i perconally like the story line in twilight better but thats probably due to the fact that i am a girl and i like the love story in twilight and that my favorite charater in harry potter was Sirus Black and J.K. Rowling killed him off in the fifth book and then she killed off my second favorite character (Dumbledore) in the next so the series was hard for me to finish. But i believe that twilight would have been the most phenomenal series ever and i mean ever if J.K. Rowling had written it, because while Stephenie Meyer is a good writer she cant really touch the level of writting Rowling is able to achieve!
twilight 4 effing ever!!!!!
Twilight is complete crap. All it is a big mound of adjectives and adverbs and “I love you”s. It’s also anti-feminist and shows pedophilia in a positive light. I don’t even understand why Harry Potter should even have to be mentioned in the same sentence.
I’m wearing my “Twilight is the cultural equivalent of cancer” shirt to HBP, by the way =D
Harry Potter is much more interesting. I read the Twilight series and like it as well, but I felt like I was reading the same things over and over… it got kind of repetitive. And boring. Harry Potter is by far my favorite series EVER.
TWILIGHT!!!!!! its so much more interesting…better story line
I can’t believe this question was even raised. Harry Potter is far better, and this has nothing to do with my bias for the stories. I’ve read/seen Twilight (which was torturous), and it’s only enjoyable for the people who DO like it because of the heated romance. Harry Potter has very little romance compared to it. And I suppose the people who don’t like it DO seriously analyse the films/books, rather than just sitting back and enjoying it. If I did that, I could probably enjoy Twilight, but I’m not a simpleton.
I don’t like Twilight more because Stephanie Meyer is not good at writing, her writing is comparable to a high-schoolers, and yes, it is very one dimensional. I actually feel offended when people think that Twilight could even compete with Harry Potter.
i love twilight but harry potter is the best. period.
the plot is WAY better and the movies are a ZILLION times better too.
the cast of harry potter are way better actors.
Twilight all the way! I agree, it is more realistic!
I have never read the harry potter series but I have seen the first 5 movies and I am currently waiting to see the 6th one. I thoroughly enjoyed the Harry Potter movies and I’m sure I would like the books. I only recently became interested in the Twilight series when the movie came out. When I read the series, I could not put them down. I finished the whole series in about a month or so. Looking at both series, they are two very different styles. While they are both fantasy, Twilight contains more romance with the fantasy. I like the story of how Twilight came to be, from a dream Stephenie Meyers had. And I also like that they are told from two different points of view…Twilight is as Bella telling the story and many people (especially teenage girls) can relate to what she is going through, especially emotionally. And with Harry Potter you get all these other characters that come into play and get to have their story told and are part of the big picture. I love both series/movies and I agree with the people that say both are a success…and they are both a success in their own way.
http://theantitwilightmovement.webs.com/about.htm
My entire arguement. Take the time to read it, it is very interesting. The FAQ is pretty interesting too. Read it, totally worth your time.
personally i think harry potter is better when it comes to vivid descriptions and creative plotlines. the movies, who have made its young actors unnecessarily rich, is more colorful when comes to presenting emotions and scenery. harry potter, i think, gives its readers hope and courage to achieve something greater, and it provides the message that it does not matter how little you come from, and that the world is waiting for you to move it. twilight, however, i felt was more connectable (although vapires and werewolfs do not exsist…) because bella is not perfect and the way she is, insecure and ordinarily akward, provides a connection with its many real readers. edward, i think is a symbol of a dream for a perfect yet unperfect love. perfect because of the idea of dream lover who is irrevocably in love with an ordinary girl. and unperfect because there are so many obstacles and stresses that comes along with that love. twilight is a dream; it takes the readers to cloud nine and and the idea of star-crossed lovers.
Twilight.
Like I said– don’t kill me.
Both of these movies (sorry I haven’t read any of the books!) are intresting, They both take diffrent perseptectives of life. Personally, I would perfer Harry Potter because I think that it is more suspensful and always had a great storyline. Twilight, was good. I’m sorry for all of you that loooove it, but I don’t really get why this girl all of a sudden falls in love with a vampire, isn’t scared 1 bit, and almost kills herself numerous times. Harry Potter has more a back-up to things.
So Harry Potter wins in my veiw.
What the crap? Twilight is more realistic cuz it’s boring perhaps! But as readers, I think, we want to be in a completely alternate world sometimes which is exactly what the Harry Potter books accomplish while Twilight, I believe, is just another book about a girl with a forbidden crush. Like ok? I think it’s a little bit cliched. In comparing Harry Potter to Twilight, Harry will always triumph over Twilight by a landslide. And I’m not knocking the author of Twilight, Stephanie Meyers, cuz I personally don’t like that one series. But doesn’t she write those Host books? Like those look really interesting but Twilight: Nuh-uh. I don’t think so. So yeah, pretty much it’s a pointless comparison. Harry Potter wins this battle. BAM!
I am Twighlite all the way!
amy
Ps;Yes, I know I spelled it wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!
TWILIGHT ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes, twilight is good.
i love the series, and the movie was decent.
BUT.
HARRY POTTER WILL ALWAYS BE BETTER.
Harry Potter is better than Twilight, hands down. I won’t get into a long lengthy debate about it because the other commenters have pretty much proved my point. Twilight is a fad, it will not be around forever. The people I’ve met who like Twilight only because “OMG EDWARD IS SOOOOOOO HAWWWT!!!” …seriously. And yes I have read both series. It doesn’t really matter which is better, it’s just that my opinion is that Harry Potter is.
Twilight fursuree. I never really got into the whole HP thing. I think that Twilight is infact more realistic than harry potter. I think it is a tie though. Everyone has theyre own opinion by for me, twilight is the better series/movie.
Harry Potter FTW!
Well I think they have the same amount of fans…but I prefer Harry Potter. Harry Potter is more advanced, uses high level thinking, and shows the lives of all the characters. Twilight on the other hand is written for younger audiences and it shows in the vocabulary. The whole series revolves around Bella. Plus why do we need a whole book on depression saying the same exact thing “There was a hole in my heart”. It got old after a while. Twilight is very predictable and just a girl’s fantasy written down. However despite all this, I love Twilight. It was an easy read and sweet. But, in no way beats Harry Potter. Harry Potter has dimension and is very unpredictable. However it depends on your opinion. The majority of Twilight readers are those who hate reading, yet somehow read 500 page books over and over. So just depending on your interests….but Harry Potter (in my opinion) ROCKS and ALWAYS will!!!
let me tell you something. harry potter has so much more imagination and creativity, i mean broomsticks, wizards, quidditch, and not only does it have that, it also has the right amount of comedy, adventure, and romance. the movies are USUALLY pretty awesome, and can atleast have believable graphics.
twilight on the other hand, is all about a stupid whiny girl who is in love with a vampire and becomes one later on. haha yeah thats very creative. it has too much romance, and there are so many grammatical errors in it. the movie sucked, as did the book. to hell with this twilight thing.
Harry Potter is way better, but I don’t like getting into the big fighting.
Who said Twilight was more realistic..? Um, neither is realistic and that’s what makes them both fantasy books. I agree that Harry Potter has a better plot/history but it really all comes down to what you like. I’ve read both and I enjoy them, but I still am a Potter fan at heart.
I’ve only read the first of the Harry Potter books, but I have a brother who’s a big fan and has read all of them. I’ve read all of the Twilight series though. They are both really great authors. I obviously can’t really answer fairly because i haven’t read harry potter, but the twilight books are absolutely addicting. I couldn’t put them down, and I’m not a big reader. Stephenie Meyer is such a good author and she captivates the reader, but I’ve heard so many good things about JK Rowling too. I’m for Twilight, but both authors are equally skilled in writing.
Harry potter hands down. why? cause it makes far more sense. and the first book dragged me into the series.
twilight. where to start. bella is a girl with delicious smelling flesh according to edward. its hard for him to control his desire to crush her.
so it’s like saying that a hot dog smells delicious, but i feel horrible if i eat it. why? cause im in love with it.
Harry Potter, no contest.
I agree that Twilight was pretty much the worst series ever. It was like badly written self-insert highschool AU fanfic, Mary Sue and all.
There is NO comparison required here, HP is utterly superior.
TWILIGHT SUCKS.
MAJORLY.
SMEYER IS A TERRIBLE WRITER.
AND HARRY POTTER IS AWESOME.
KTHX
I have read both series of these books, and i find that you cannot compare the two books.
For instance:
TWILIGHT- a romantic/thrilling book that would be best for the readers who are teenage girls. i mean, there are a lot of people who love the books that arent teenagers nor girls, but thats mostly the majority, and i think thats why some ignorant people cant stand the books, because of annoying, crazed teenage girls.
HARRY POTTER- a thrilling tale about an adventurous, courageous boy, who grows as the story goes on. this book would be best for any kind of reader, and thats why i think a lot of people are saying that they hate twilight.
the twilight saga and harry potter are written so differently, too, with completely different authors. lets face it, twilight is in bellas point of view (a teenage girl,) whereas harry potter is written in third person (which as i said, anyone could read this book.)
the movies, on the other hand, is a different story. the harry potter movies are, by far bettere than twilight. this is because of the movies’ budgets, though.
THE BOOKS CAN NOT BE COMPARED!!!!
I personally like Harry Potter better *of course* because the way the story has so much into it. It’s very detailed and descriptive and so…. powerful with a handful of twists and turns. You could never really predict what could happen in the next books. The characters are very unique with lots of feeling, and you can see the develpment and growth of each person. The author has so much imagination and feeling into the book… thats what makes it so amazing. Twilight… is ok but doesn’t have much depth into the story. It is very predictable and the characters don’t seem to change. I guess it’s a pretty good love story, but hardly realistic. I mean i used to like it but as I reread some of the books it made me realize that it can’t be compared to such a fascinating book like Harry Potter. Bella is a very lifeless girl, without real feeling and she barely smiles (unless Edward is around). I really hate it when she leaves everyone and everything she had for one vampire who has apparently has everything she needs. How could you leave all your loved ones? One reason teens like the twilight is because of the “amazing”, and “sexy” vampire, Edward… ugh. Another is because Bella has no personality so they can just place them into her role and fantasize. Bella is not a very good role model or anything. She gets way to obsessive and getting married early, having sex, being pregnant and all those stuff at a young age…? I don’t think she should’ve done any of those things and maybe Stepenie shoud’ve changed that and taught a lesson to readers instead of almost encouraging them. However, Stephanie did do a good job on making vampires and werewolves more realistic then other authors attempted to do. And Stephenie did do really well on writing the actuall book, but just didn’t like the story of it. Maybe if she tried a different story line…? Both books can be amazing but Harry Potter is truly better in my opinion!
Harry Potter. I can explain why, but more than enough people have already.
Seriously, Harry Potter is much better. Stephanie Meyers is a pathetic excuse for a writer. J.K. Rowling actually put some background and some definition into her characters, not to mention an actual plot. I’ve read both series of books and I personally found it rather difficult to read the Twilight Saga, as it is so one-dimensional and blant.
I wish people would stop comparing them. Let each person read what they want, and stop hating each other. I like both series, but I thought Harry Potter just lost my interest after awhile. Bella is more relatable, as far as characters go.
I can’t see how people are actually comparing the two. As a lot of the people have stated I love both. They have two COMPLETELY different tons and action sequences. For instance I thought Harry Potter wasn’t written from the thoughts of a teenage boy. There was no portrayal of sexual ambitions or urges. Instead all that was just swept under the rug. Twilight on the other hand. Was written perfectly describing sexual ambitions and conquests.
Although Harry Potter did have fantastic characters, plots and character development, it didn’t portray the certain desires that twilight did. I am a person that loves and embraces though’s very desires so accordingly I would favor twilight more, but I have a brain. You see, anyone with a working brain can rationalize that Twilight was not poorly written, but poorly edited. She had grammatical errors from left to right. There were in HP too. But ironically people look the other way on those.
Which idiot said that Harry Potter is unsuspenseful, I don’t even think the 7th book is complete. It makes me wonder if they’ll be an 8th book.
I have completely read both series, and I say Harry Potter is far superior. But first hear me out:
I do love Twilight, the books were nice and very relatable to, but some parts were so utterly boring I had to skip about 5 chapters to find something interesting. And some people say that Potter isn’t realistic? How many instances have you heard of about a person who is in love with a vegetarian vampire that can’t kiss a girl without trying to suppress the urge to rip her face off? I do think that under the circumstances, Potter is more realistic in the essence of making everything sound true (although I know there is no way a dementor is going to suck out my soul) I am a little biased, though, ’cause I did start reading Harry Potter when i was in 2nd/3rd grade, so I did grow up with it, but its still my personal preference. And I think the characters in Harry Potter are better role models, but I still think everyone is still jealous of Bella (gorgeous vampire boyfriend/husband)
Anyway, I think both are great best- selling series, but Harry Potter just sticks with me more, although I do love Twilight as well (I know it doesn’t really sound like it)
I don’t think you can compare the two. Their both so different. Those are my two favorite series, and like someone on here said before, I don’t want to fight to see which ones better. I love them both. If I had to choose which overall plot I like better, Harry Potter. It’s such a classic, for kids all the way to adults. Twilight was breathtaking and simply amazing, but I didn’t like the way it made me feel when I finished it. Harry Potter made me feel invincible and brave.
I would definitely pick Harry Potter over Twilight anyday and for these reasons.
1. I dont know why it would be a good thing for twilight to be realistic. People write books like harry potter to get away from realisticness. this is because those sorts of things are fun to imagine when you dont have any boundaries. If you like realistic then go watch some C-Span.
2. I hate the fact that vampires were so altered in Twilight. The original vampire wqaas of course Dracula and Dracula was based off of Vlad The Impaler. Vlad was so evil that i wouldnt mind accusing him to be the devil. After he would kill his victims he would “DRINK THERE BLOOD” ya and then he would “SHOVE THERE DEAD BODIES ONTO PIKES” and vampires are allergic to the sun anyway. Why cant people just stick to the original. And it wasnt just vampires it was several differnt things (Werewolves, Th Hulk, wtf)
I really don’t see any point in comparing the two books, but if you ask for my honest opinion, I would choose Harry Potter over Twilight. They are both written very realistically and they do share a common point. Both could not be seen as ‘classics’ but they are the best to offer young readers. I have never read Twilight if in any ways this forbids me to even place an opinon on the book. Well, at first, I never took too much interest in HP books. They seem too naive and unrealistic; but, however, I soon realized the deep morals and suspense and went in favor of these works. I noticed Twilight when all of a sudden, I realized that everyone was into the movie. I never watched the movie either, but it seems to me a film of “handsome Edward-ness”. In my opinion, Twilight is for teens who gets swoon away by the characters’ beauty and handsomeness.
They cant be compared, vampires v wizards that’s like saying would you prefer a pet snake or eat fish, even though they are both fantasies geared towards the younger crowd they are very different and toot others horns differently
Definitely Twilight just for the fact that it can be compared to Harry Potter after just 1 movie
harry potter is better, no competition. and i should let you know i don’t really either like harry potter or twilight but even though harry potter’s movies take longer to film, they are better quality and acually has a story too it, unlike twilight which is just about a vampire and a girl that fall in love and the story of their love drags over 4 (possibly 5) movies…boring. harry potter has a story, twilight does not. harry potter is interesting, twilight is not. harry potter has good actors, twilight does not (and girls…robert/taylor aren’t that hot (you didn’t think anything of robert in harry potter did u?)).
HARRY POTTER IS BETTER THAN TWILIGHT. end of story, goodbye.
harry potter ftw. twilight is bad and not interesting.
Edward is a creepy stalker. Jacob is a pedophile. Bell is whiny and annoying ,and needs sex just to make her life exciting……. The best charector in it is probably roasali cullen…… But i still think she is terrible…. Terribly written.

HARRY POTTER HAS NO COMPETITION.
ITS COMPLETELY POINTLESS.
TWILIGHT IS BELOW HARRY POTTER.
COMPARING TWILIGHT TO HARRY POTTER IS A TOTAL INSULT TO HARRY POTTER, J.K.ROWLING, AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE GOOD SENSE IN BOOKS.
Twilight is horrible. Harry Potter is magnificent. I don’t see what the craze is with Twilight. Edward is a pale skinned creep. GET A BLOODY TAN.
Harry Potter just goes way above your imagination. You learn something new in every book. Twilight is kind of the same thing in every book. I knew Edward and Bella would stay together forever. Duh.oh and I also hate how the annoying teenage girls who don’t even read the Twilight series fight over how Twilight is so much better. Whoever writes on here, please read both series. Their so much different and better than the movies.
Harry Potter of course.
im a big fan of both but i would think twilight is better because i actually read the twilight saga series so i had more experience with twilight but my friend says harry potter is the best u see she has more experience with harry potter series but she has read the twilight saga and she says its to mature for her age so i would say its unfair to discuss this matter to all but for the movies i would say harry potter win because new moon hasnt come out yet so until breaking dawn is out u shouldnt ask who is better
I’ve read the Twilight series and the Harry Potter series, and I love them both. However, I need to say that J.K. Rowling is a far better writer than Stephenie Meyer. The Twilight plot is amazing but it isn’t as well written as the Harry Potter novels are. Also, the story of the Boy Who Lived is way more complex and fascinating. Not to mention original. We’ve all heard the story of the vampire-human love.
There is a lot more that I could say, but I think that many of the people above me have already said what’s on my mind.
So, all in all, I love Twilight, but I am absolutely totally addicted to Harry Potter and the world that the fabulous J.K.Rowling has created. My final word? Harry Potter is much better.
I love both of them. But Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince is my favorite book and movie.
the comparison *is* completely pointless… because harry potter is obviously the better series.
Harry Potter no freaking duh! Twilight sucks! :]
I don’t know why I want to add my opinion to this insanity, but insanity intrigues me I guess. I never felt any urge to compare the two because they are both good examples of literature in their own right. Read both! It can’t hurt to form your own educated opinion.
My opinion…
Twilight was better when I felt like reading about the struggles people go through because of love. Harry Potter was better when I felt like reading about a more complex, problem-solving adventure and mystery.
As for the authors, Stephenie Meyer does an excellent job at taking well-known plot themes, adjusting them to modern times, but twisting them just enough at the end so it has her own flare. For example, New Moon, specifically, seems like a copy of the love triangle and fake suicide in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, but Bella manages to save Edward; whereas, Juliet awakens after Romeo is dead. (brief explanation, don’t want to get too bogged down on details) You can probably make some examples of this in J.K. Rolling’s writing too. However, I believe that J.K. Rolling’s plot line does not focus as much as Stephenie Meyer’s does on a clichéd plot line. Therefore, I believe J.K. Rolling is a better writer because she is more original. Both do show that as they write they improve in their writing technique. Breaking Dawn in the Twilight series blew me away with her ability to move away from the predictable ending I figured was going to be in there somewhere—I really expected them all to die in the end. Furthermore, after each book in Harry Potter, the next one ended up being better than the last with increasing suspense and enjoyment.
i like twilight but it in no way compares to harry potter. twilight only appeals to young girls, harry potter transcends all ages and races in a universal theme of good versus evil and struggling to find yourself and stand up for what is right, which is something everyone can relate to
as far as better literature goes, harry potter wins it by a mile. as for movies, everyone always seems to say the same thing about the book and the movie with harry potter, ‘the book was way better.’ many things from the book are omitted in the movie. but whole books can’t be made into a single movie, it’d take about 6 hours to watch.
twilight was interesting to read. the vocabulary and imagery wasn’t as good as harry potter though. it’s very simple reading that gets straight to the point. all the books seem to all be the same. its all just one flat story line in each book. and after reading the first 3 books, a reader kinda gets tired of always reading about what bella has to say: ‘i want to be a vampire’ and ‘oh i can’t live without edward.’ it gets repetitive. the movie on the other hand is actually close to the book. i would have to say that they are very alike. not to mention, edward is also a nice person to look at. which brings me to say, most people probably only go to watch the twilight movies because of edward.
Clearly Stephenie Meyer must have done something right if she’s being compared to Rowling. Even if it is badly. If you finish reading her book and then think “This is not as good as Harry Potter!” Then clearly it was good enough to bring Harry Potter to the fore front of your mind.
I’m going to agree with what someone said earlier and say that both were amazing stories. But for completely different reasons. Twilight was a story about falling in love and going through hel*l and back for the one you love where as Harry Potter was about growing up, friendship ,bravery and loyalty.
Both were extremely amazing but they are so different it’s pretty hard to even try to compare them.
And on the topic about Stephen King saying that Stephenie Meyer was not an exceptional writer– that’s completely understandable. Twilight is targeted towards teenage girls living in a modern world. Stephen King is not a teenager, nor a girl and probably doesn’t have the greatest time reading a book about a seventeen year old female having trouble trying to kniss her boyfriend.
And as far as the movies are concerned, I feel Harry Potter is exceptionally better for two reasons:
One, J.K. Rowling asked to oversee the entirety of the HP films, even writing the script for certain scenes before book 7 came out. However Meyer was so stoked that they were even considering making the book a movie, she was a lot more “go with the flow.” (Take into account, I don’t know either of the authors, this is just what I’ve witnessed from BTS* interviews and such)
The second reason is budget of course, the makers of HP knew it would sell well in theaters so they were able to put more money into the project. However Summit had no idea how well Twilight would do and funding was low. (Again, this is just my understanding, forgive me if my information is incorrect.)
I’m going to stop here because if I don’t I could end up going on forever, but it seems that most people seem to believe that you can’t like both books. The controversy is ridiculous as is the need to “pick a side”. What’s wrong with liking both Twilight and Harry Potter, and more importantly why does it bother people so much if one person likes one book more than the other? So my answer to the question, Which is better Harry Potter or Twilight, is neither. I believe that they are both equally spectacular.
BTS stands for Behind The Scenes
I have read both the series, although I have been attached to the Harry Potter series far longer than I have to the Twilight series. At one point, I did believe Twilight to be one of the best books I’ve ever read, along with its sequels. I found that the series was relatable to a certain extent, and that the book was quite captivating as we witness the growth of a relationship between Edward and Bella and their inner turmoil. However, as the series progressed, I found the plots to become more redundant, the same concepts and ideas being used repeatedly until it came to the point where I stopped enjoying the series. After the series was done, I realized that the characters were much too simple, stereotypical, and one-dimensional. They held no depth and also became annoying and hard to relate to.
As for Harry Potter, I’ve always felt extremely drawn to this series as it played a large role in my childhood. The series, at least to me, was very real. As an imaginative child, I would always wonder if I’d ever get an acceptance letter to Hogwarts, no matter how silly the notion. This just shows that I was, and am, able to relate to the series. The characters have depth and backrounds and individual, no character is just the same. And the plots for each book varied, and the characters grew with each book, and each book just got better. At the end of the series, despite the ‘too-sweet’ and unecessary epilogue, I was both satisfied by the read and saddened that there wouldn’t be another book to follow. As for the Twilight series, I have never felt that way.
Plus, the Harry Potter movies are way better than the Twilight movie.
I loved the twilight books, but I actually like the Harry Potter movies more than the twilight movie, if I actually read the Harry Potter books, then maybe I would like Harry Potter better.
Harry Potter is the best compared to Twilight!!!
Twilight sucks. Smeyer raped the thesaurus. ==”
Twilight is plotless. Cliched b*tch. http://guardiandelta.deviantart.com/art/A-Brief-Summary-of-Twilight-112065659
Stupid Twitards. They’re as narrowminded as Bella.
HP a lot better than Twilight. The characters are in depth and the plot is complicated. Not cliched.
HP is awesome.
Twilight can go, and will go, to Hell.
As I mentioned on Y! Answers, I just can’t get into the Twilight franchise. I saw the movie, which was mildly entertaining. Harry Potter won me over slowly but surely, for a few reasons. First, I had been out of the habit of reading for pleasure, for some time. The Potter series reminded me that reading could be a joy. Secondly, I’m a bit of an Anglophile. I’ve always been fascinated by the Englsh culture, and I like the fact that Rowling did not “Americanize” the books, to sell more of them.
Oh and by the way, no I’m not basing all my knowledge of the UK on the Potter books. That would be like someone watching a bunch of westerns to learn about the US.
Harry Potter is superior to Twilight. Harry Potter, for instance, reaches a wider audience and has an actual driving plot. The characters are well-developed and loved for their flaws and for their strengths.
I also find it interesting that Meyers isn’t concerned with teenage girls wanting to become vampires, and seeking an Edward (While charming, is quite the stalker, and would not provide a healthy relationship). On the other hand, Rowling showed some concern when she found girl were attracted to Draco Malfoy – another poor choice for a relationship.
I could really go on to how poorly written the first three chapters I read were in Twilight – I couldn’t read any more – and of several overheard conversations that Twilight even got boring for an entire book (Shouldn’t it keep one interested? – more signs of bad ng)
It’s really never going to be a settled agreement, but I feel like I have to fight for some sort of literary justice. How could Twilight even be compared to Harry Potter? It’s insulting to the writing world.
That is my imput.
These are many excellent reasons why Harry Potter is superior to Twilight.
1. Bella. About the most Mary-sue character I think anyone could have pulled off. I mean… “I’m oh so average, but seventeen guys have fallen in love with me on my first day of school”. Her only “flaw” is that she is clumsy, but really, that just serves in making her more adorable and all the better for everyone to swoop in and save through all-too-convenient mishaps. Not to mention, people are saying she’s a great role model? She is a teenage girl who wants to give up everything, her family and friends (whom she treats like scum), her life, for a boy whom she “loves” only because he’s so freaking sparkly gorgeous (see #2). She has no dreams, turns down a great college to marry said disco ball and conceive demon spawn at age 18, right before she dies a horrific death after begging new husband to sleep with her for six thousand monotonous pages.
2. Edward. Somehow, he even surpasses Bella in the perfection department, which we are not permitted to forget…ever. I didn’t know there were so many words for perfect, sexy, hawt and amazing and shiny and wonderful and amber. Dear. Lord. And to be honest, he’s creepy. Even at age 16, if a boy watched me sleep, dismantled my car, declared his eternal love, and yanked me around and “overruled” my opinions in just about everything (cause he’s perfect, so he always knows better)…I’d freak and probably call the police. This is stalking and abuse, children. Not love. Also… I realize his body is seventeen. However, he is 100 years old, and I don’t get the impression that his mind stalled at 17. What about an “average” teenage girl could possibly interest him besides the fact that she smells like chocolate cake wrapped in bacon or something? Also… couldn’t she just say she created some new race? This man is not a vampire! He has an urge to drink blood, which is surpressed. No fangs. No deadly allergy to sunlight. I can understand reinventing vampires… but taking away every single flaw they have while playing up the greatness makes for a very boring read (this bit of advice could have been applied to the characters, as well).
3. I’m all for kids reading. In fact, my teenage siblings are given gift cards for holidays that they don’t receive til they read a book of their choosing and then describe it to me. I’m a huge reader, I read everything, from young adult novels to Stephen King to textbooks I stole from high school and keep from college. And I am about as against censorship as it gets. But I would have serious issues with my 12 year old sister reading these. The messages about their “love” is stalkerish and and disturbing. Not to mention the demon seed baby that Eddy boy EATS out of her after it breaks her back and kills her. I understand these are silly, poolside books, but the people who really think it’s an epic love story, with beautiful prose (which is has, in SPADES) and perfect everything… really? The only action in anything takes place at the very end (p. 452 or so) and is wrapped up in all its predictable glory in about five pages.
And before the Twilight lackeys start freaking out on me… yes, I have read them all. And yes, a part of my tween self loved that someone as sexy as Edward could fall in love with me (because I’m sure we can all admit..It’s written from Bella’s POV to make us feel like the star). But if you stop drooling long enough to really think about it, it’s almost kind of laughable.
I’ll admit it, apart from the creepy imprinting on the baby thing (which I found incredibly sexist, actually: “What if they refuse?” “Why would they do that?”. End of discussion) I sort of liked Jacob. He had some depth, at least.
The Top Ten Reasons why Twilight Sucks:
1. There’s too much sickly sweet syrupy romance. And it’s only skin deep. She likes him ‘cuz he’s hot. He likes her ‘cuz she’s…well, I’m not quite sure why he likes her actually… She smells good?
2. The word “beautiful” and all it’s cousins (even the ones twice removed) are used a gazillion times when describing Edward.
3. Edward is a stalker and stupid Bella finds that romantic.
4. Bella is a friggin’ pansy. Girl needs to grow a backbone and stop waitin’ around for everybody else to come save her.
5. The story itself is totally over used and there’s nothing original about it. Can you say cliche?
6. Stephenie Meyer, for some reason, likes to include EVERY little mundane detail of Bella’s life. Honestly, I don’t CARE that she ate a granola bar for breakfast or that it took her five minutes to make a sammich. Really, life will go on.
7. The vampires are “vegetarians.”
8. The vampires are disco balls.
9. The werewolves don’t even show up until the next book. (Which sucks even more than Twilight.)
10. The conflict, which lasts for a grand total of 70 pages (out of, like, 500), is resolved in time for Bella’s prom! Happy super fun time!
- Bella is pathetic. She is so desperate for love that she’s willing to give up her family and everything to be with Edward.
- It’s completely cliche…I mean, c’mon. It’s no different from thousands of other vampire romances. Girl falls for boy. Boy turns out to become a vampire. They can’t be together, it isn’t safe for Girl. But in the end it all works out….*rolls eyes*
- The author tied everything together with big, random adjectives that most of the time didn’t even fit.
- It was so long, yet nothing happened. All those pages and nothing special happened until the huge, predictable fight scene at the end.
- So DAMN Sappy…UGH
- Boring
- If the cullens don’t have fangs, how do they puncute the flesh of animals and/or humans (because we all know they secretly do lol)
- The FANS (they are whiny, little girls who will fight to the death if you say “Edward Cullen is such a fag and Bella is nothing more than a tool.” Or something like that aloud. XD lmao

And here are the reaons why Harry Potter is superior to Twilight.
Harry potter is an amazing series. It is witty, imaginative, entertaining, thought provoking and beautifully written. A lot of us, including me grew up with it, and the story grew with us. A person of any age can read Harry Potter and get completely wrapped up in the story. Mainly, it is the way the story is written, it is an entirely new world, all created and every question answered by Ms. Rowling.
As for Twilight, It is very poorly written. Stephanie Meyer uses the same phrases and word choices over and over, and creates characters who have low self esteem and are self deprecating. Her stories lack imagination. Where Rowling creates an entire new world and creatively introduces information in a way that astounds us, Meyer introduces information in completely predictable and redundant ways, and offers nothing new. Instead of creating a new world with interesting characters rooted in Greek mythology and folklore, she decides to have vampires present in an American high school. How innovative.
Twilight is a teen fad- Harry Potter is an amazing piece of literature that will withstand the test of time.
better writing structure. Well thought out characters. Actual Character development as they age.
The bad guys are bad guys and not built up to be something they are not in the end.
JK Rowling uses mythology and history in her stories so with out knowing it readers actually learn things. Many of the Character names are very cleverly using myths and astrology.
Harry Potter deals with more mature issues than Twilight. You don’t always have a happy ending in Harry Potter.
And JK Rowling doesn’t call Puritans Anglicans.
Hm… uh… let’s see… not much, but I think I’ll scrounge up a bit…
1. It has suspense, it’s not predictable.
2. On that note, it has a plot.
3. The characters aren’t one-dimensional.
4. It doesn’t use long adjectives to make it seem like good writing.
5. It’s good writing.
6. It’s interesting.
7. It doesn’t revolve entirely around a ditzy girl who is a bit TOO obsessed with her sparkly boyfriend.
8. It doesn’t have brain-dead fangirls
9. It doesn’t have brain-dead characters
10. Did I mention it has a plot?
11. It’s creative
12. It has depth
13. It’s not cliche
14. Characters don’t become zombies because their sparkly boyfriend left them.
15. Characters don’t jump off cliffs because their sparkly boyfriend dumped them.
16. Characters don’t HAVE to have a partner- they can actually live without one.
17. It has more than one strong character.
18. the characters develop
19. Harry Potter will be remembered, even commended 50 years from now. Twilight will not.
20. JK Rowling has the plots beforehand, she doesn’t just think of them as she writes.
21. Male characters don’t dominate the females.
22. The fans actually realize that the characters aren’t real (see #8).
23. It has good writing style
24. The message is good.
25. Characters don’t get pregnant and married before they get out of college and are still a teenager.
26. Harry Potter has few, insignificant plotholes while Twilight has many major ones.
27. The fans of Harry Potter can take it if someone doesn’t like HP, Twilight fans can’t.
28. It appeals to more than brain-dead 15 year old girls.
I could probably go on forever. And yes, I’m obviously a Harry Potter fan and I hate Twilight. However, I know that there are flaws in HP too.
everything is better – the writing style, the plot, the characters have much more depth, the series is more exciting, it appeals to a wider age range, people with good taste prefer Harry Potter
REAL MEN *DON’T* SPARKLE OK??
THEY JUST DON’T!!!
PLUS. SNAPE IS SOOOO HOT. IT’S UNBELIEVABUBBLE!!! <3
Hi there,
Let me see.
1) HP has a plot.
2) HP has proper characters.
3) HP has a story that it not entirely cliche and trashy.
4) HP makes use of language in an elegant original way.
5) HP deals with other things APART from telling us how unbelievably perfect some glittering vampire is.
6) HP has a female lead that actually is more than an empty hull.
THAT is why HP is better.
The you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.
HP is better.
It’s a future classic.
It has an actually plot.
Well-developed characters.
Better writing.
Bigger fan base.
It’s going to have a theme park.
One single HP book has sold more than the whole Twilight series.
THE ONLY REASON so many little girls love Twilight is because of Edward’s physical appearance, how he’s so “hot” and mysterious, etc.
Take Edward out of the story, or better yet turn him ugly, the books will lose more than half its fans.

I think that just about sums it up, don’t you?
I saw HARRY POTTER IS BETTER THAN TWILIGHT!!
I even think that Harry Potter is more realistic than twilight! Because how can vampires glitter in the sunlight and when you are 17 like Bella you are supposed to be having fun and enjoying life, not being obsessed with some boy. And by the ways Edward is too much of a stalker to be worth it. People are just into it cause they think that Edward is handsome. I don’t. and Robert Pattinson (Edward) first came out in Harry Potter why did Twilight have to steal him away. I also think that it is a bad example for people. And I hate how people are obsessed with the book. It is just so annoying, and very pathetic.
My point is
HARRY POTTER IS BETTER THAN TWILIGHT!
TWILIGHT……100000000000%%%%%%%%%%%%
Harry Potter is to Twilight as the Amazon Rainforest is to a tumbleweed. Discussing the details would only insult Harry Potter.
Twilight. It’s just such a better storyline, and as for Stephen King – his books are odd, far-fetched and he’s clearly jealous of the attention the Twilight books are getting. People are comparing Twilight to the great Harry Potter already – there’s only been one movie! The hype’s just going to grow.
Twilight all around.
Oh… I have more.
I would first like to point out that the formality and intelligence put to writing these debates. It’s fair to say that *most* that are written in a clear style are *for* Harry Potter.
And… that Harry Potter, as a kid, motivated me to be a stronger person, to stand up for my beliefs. Reflecting on Twilight, I can’t see a positive message to follow from those characters.
Is it to wait around for the perfect person?
Is it that vampirism is good?
Is it that we should control ourselves and bury our natural desires?
…etc. etc.
I rest my imput.
After six books and many years of waiting, re-reading, analysing and waiting, Harry Potter and JKR delivered a book that lived and surpassed expectations of millions of fans. It had twists and turns no one saw coming.
After three books and a month or two of waiting (Lets face everyone got into Twilight after HP was over) Stephanie Meyers delivered the letdown of any series I’ve read. The whole book was a complete waste of time. Honestly if a third party were to read and then summarise Twilight you would find that the only thing that happened in the book was Renesmee and Bella turning into a vampire, which everyone saw coming. (Not Renesmee but Bella)
That and Rob Pattinson is a twat, he was when he played Cedric and he confirmed it in Twilight.
To me there is no contest, in the story or the writing skill.
twilight is incredibly stupid and unrealistic..perfect for love struck middle schoolers ;D
harry potter FTW.
I do think that J. K. Rowling is the superior writer however I believe it is easier for people to relate to the characters in Twilight better than in Harry Potter. In Twilight you are literally inside a normal teenage girls’ head. while in Harry Potter although he is supposedly a “normal boy in extraordinary circumstances” he is obviously not a normal boy, and the characters tend not to have to deal with subjects that are more real and common in this generation (such as sex). While Harry Potter would be more subtle with things like that. In Harry Potter though we are exposed to things such as learning the strong bond of friendship, how people change, and how the choices people make affect them. Both are good books but completely different.
Tiwghlight is a pathetic excuse for a movie. Now the book i have read and its meh to me i didnt find it that good but HP was actually original/
Harry Potter, for sure.
Twilight makes me think of a romance novel for teens disguised as a fantasy novel.
Of the two writers i feel like J.K. rowling is has a far better writing quality. She was unpredictable in her books and kept the readers captivated. Stephanie Meyer just played into the hands of her fans. From the very first book i knew how the series would end. There was no huge plot twist or real substance to the twilight series. everything was predictable. J.K. Rowling had an amazing plot with stunning twists that kept u guessing till the end. By far harry potter rules over all. And it always will. Twilight will fade away from interest…harry potter will always be there.
the best series with out a doubt would be the HARRY POTTER series. Why? Well, a simple answer that is. to me the harry potter books can be a book that anybody can read. i mean from a child to a teen to and adult it will capture your attention and take you into a magical world of excitement, suspense, sorrow, and happiness all at the same time…i have found my self to read all these books in my adult life and i have absolutely loved them. on the other hand my sister introduced me into the twilight series and in my opinion those books did not seem all the interesting to me. i mean what is the main reason in the movie the fact that she fell in love with a vampire and its forbidden but she still goes for it and then ends up getting hurt just to get back with him have a child and then turn into a vampire her self. it just doesn’t seem enough to me and the whole ware wolf thing either. so, the twilight series nope that’s a no no..if i want to read some good vampire books i will just read Anne Rice’s books now those are good….
and Harry Potter Wins
Harry Potter, hands down. Although I may be a little bias, seeing as HP is my favorite series.. But
I agree with Princess. HP has a far better storyline than Twilight. &If you really think about it, most of Twilight’s fans are girls thirsty ferr some Robert. Just saying. &What idiot said Twilight was more realistic??
jk and stephanie are about equally amazing when it comes to writing. although steph isnt at the best of her abilities in twilight, i quite liked reading the host.
i know that others may not agree, but:
HARRY POTTER IS AWESOME!!!
Harry potter is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOmuch better than Twilight that its really not even a competition. Honestly twilight doesn’t deserve to be in the same league as harry potter because twilight’s characters are really 1 dimensional and have completely unrealistic personalities and reactions. They experience very little if any (and if any its useless) character growth. It doesn’t appeal to as large a fan base (only to squealing girls) and has such simplistic writing for a young adult’s novel. Harry Potter, while being widely considered a children’s-young adult’s novel has such better thought out and pieced together writing. The literature is just sooo much BETTER!!!!! and the same goes for the movies!!! The production value of the HP movies are just so much better and the actors are just all the more experienced and better at their craft than those of twilight.
One last thing that many fangirls forget that i just LOVE pointing out, Robert Pattinson aka Edward was first aka CEDRIC DIGGORY in HP 4. So THERE!!!!!!!!! Harry Potter RULES!!!!
Twilight no doubt about it.!!!!!!!
I personally like Twilight. some ppl say more realistic but both are fake its just that twilight is more relatable too. all of us can relate to meeting someone mysteriousl amazing and falling for them but not many can relate to have magical powers and having smeone try and kill us as a baby and kill our parents just for power. and also stephenie meyer has said she doesnt believe shes as big as jk rowling stephenie meyer is national but jk rowling is international. i like stephenie meyers writing style much better though.
I honestly believe that Twilight was far too predictable. Readers could tell what was going to happen from the start; all of the books moved extremely slow, and they became very boring. I couldn’t even finish the final book. I would have to say that the Harry Potter series is better.
Twilight is typical. Harry Potter is unique.
HARRY POTTER > twilight
Harry Potter is 1 million times better than Twilight! JK Rowling is a genius. She created a whole world in her books that you could visualize in your mind. JK Rowlings is an amazing writer. One of the best, if you ask me.
Twilight is not a good book. It’s a guilty pleasure. If you ask me the only reason tweens are so obsessed with it is because they like the idea of a guy that will sweep you off your feet the way that Edward does to Bella. That’s the only reason I could imagine why anyone would find that an actual good book. Stephanie Meyers writing isn’t all that great either. So Harry Potter.
HARRY POTTER!
duhh!
i like it Q
