What gives you the chills?

I’ll admit it: If a book, TV show, or movie has even the slightest promise of the paranormal, I’m hooked. I don’t need the Halloween season to enjoy otherworldly creatures. I’ve read my way through the “Twlight” series  (and saw the movie on opening night), watched my way through the TV show “Buffy  the Vampire Slayer” (and “Angel,” the spinoff), and even sat through the first act of “Lestat: The Musical.” (I wish I were joking about that.) More recently, I’ve been hooked on the Sookie Stackhouse book series (by Charlaine Harris) and the TV show based on it, “True Blood.” (Was anybody else as crazy-excited as I was about the Season 2 series premiere last Sunday?) The mythos may vary among all these authors and producers, but one view remains constant: Vampires are totally awesome.

I don’t discriminate against ghosts, zombies, lycanthropes, aliens, or demons; I grew up on “Ghostbusters” (both the movies and the cartoon series), and I’m currently working my way through the TV series “Supernatural.”  I’ve expanded my horizons a bit and have dabbled in zombie films, watching the chilling remake of “Dawn of the Dead” along with its spoof counterpart, “Shaun of the Dead.”  (Don’t even get me started on the book “World War Z.”) Zombies, are cool, but when it comes to the undead, vampires are my favorite.

There’s so much more to appreciate than the campy stuff that relies on devices (like “Clark Kenting“) to move the plot forward. And for hard-core paranormal fans, there are events like the Haunted America “Lucky 13″ Conference this weekend to peel us away from our books or TV sets and engage us with other enthusiasts.

What is your paranormal passion?

  1. Im currently in the middle of Twilight (held out as long as I could before curiousity got the best of me) and I have to admit that Vampires are growing on me. Ive never been much of a fan of the undead before. Zombie movies are really the opposite of what I want to watch. I have to say that witches and wizardry have always caught my attention when it comes to the paranormal. Something about the idea of magic has always really appealed to me.

  3. I finished the Twilight series about this time last year, and just finished reading it through the second time, and I am in the middle of Midnight Sun (which I am ashamed to say, but I was too curious to resist). I was very reluctant to read Twilight, as I was to read Harry Potter, only because they were “fads.” But I am so glad I read them, especially Twilight! The movie was rather weak, though New Moon looks more promising. But the book series were some of the most well-written, interesting, pleasing books I have ever read! I completely agree, vampires are the best undead characters!

  4. NCIS freaked me out and I had to watch it with everything locked and the lights on with a baseball bat under my bed and got nightmares for like three weeks! I don’t get paranoied anymore but it does sort of freak you out for a tv show instead of a movie to watch!

  11. I’m much the same as you.
Vampires and werewolves are my two favorite mythological creatures of all time and I’ll read any book that involves either one of them. I’m actually trying to write my own book about the two creatures. It’s not doing so good right now, but I hope I’ll get inspired and finish it.
You’re totally right: vampires are the best.

  18. Gotta agree with Billy (four comments above mine) …

I never liked horror films, but something intelligent, with a supernatural hint, has always piqued my interest. I liked Lilith by George MacDonald, and the Spirit Flyer Series by John Bibee (I think), and Piercing the Darkness (the trilogy) by Frank Peretti. (The Spirit Flyer series is poorly titled, for both the series and each of the books, and the description of the series on Wikipedia is completely lacking. These books are perfectly fit for adult readers. Take it from someone who enjoys all the classics, and who is reading the Plato’s Republic for fun.) I know that the spiritual realm is all too real, and I have no intention of messing with the spiritual wickedness in ‘high places’, which is so prevalent today.

  19. I used to get freaked out by the idea of ’spirits’ (not ghosts; that just seems like an overdone story name), but the freaks I have to love most are werewolves!

On the subject of Twilight… Ew, I gag mentioning the name. I truly hate it. Not well written at ALL, and leagues away from Harry Potter as far as fantasy goes. (Yes, I read the Twilight books. I was laughing to whole time, it was so pathetic!)

  20. Nothing compares to Anne Rice’s vampires. I refuse to watch any other vampire movies or shows. I have read through her vampire books and the Witching hour. I have a very short attention span, and have a hard time reading books, but I cannot put her books down. Interview with the vampire was OK, but not as good as the book. Queen of the Damned was terrible, deviated from the book and didn’t sit right.
For chills, “White Noise” was good, but as soon as you watch the commentaries, you get chills and you kind of freeze up a bit.

  22. Before the movie “Twilight” came out, my sister made me read it. Needless to say, I did read it, and I liked it. But now, seven months afterwards, I hate it. It was a very pointless over-used plot. And besides, sparkling vampires…you’re kiding me right?
You can find that rant somewhere on here…I don’t think I should repeat it.
Everytime I tell somebody “Oh! I love vampires!” They somehow rearrange my words in their mind, to come up with “Oh! I love Twilight!” So they say “I thought you hated it.”
After explaining, over and over again that I had said “Vampires” They finally get the picture.
Since vampires are now over-used, my story [which I have been writing] is being called a Twilight “Wanna-be” And now I hate Twilight, for many, countless reasons.
    Sorry for the rant,

  23. I am currently reading a series by Kelley Arnstrong, which is a series about the Supernatural, the first too books are about a werewolf, and there are ones about ghosts, and other Supernatural being. I love these novels. I’ve also read Twilight.

It is the same with me, if anything has a hint of the Supernatural, I am interested.

I have watched the whole series of Buffy the Vamire Slayer, and I am hooked on the show Supernatural. I even went to a convention in May to meet the actors, Jensen Ackles (Dean) and Jared Padaleki (Sam) were there, along with nine others. It was great.

I love films like “Dark Water”, “The Ring” and others like that, I am a horror movie person, I love them.

I have to disagree though, while Vampires are cool, I think werewolves rule as the best Supernatural creatures.

  29. You conflict aliens with the paranormal? Aliens are anything but paranormal. They have a very sound scientific basis even if is speculative. The conditions and possibility of aliens is not only probable but will eventually be a fact. They should never be confused with monsters.

You should NEVER confuse FANTASY and SCIENCE FICTION. They are separate and distinct genrés. In fantasy, anything the imagination can conjure is applicable if the reader/viewer enters into a suspension of belief. Science fiction requires at least a scientific basis that may be pushed to the extreme but not beyond contravening scientific information. .

  32. Of course i love The Twilight and Harry Potter series. It’s like a must read. I have to admit ‘Twilight’, the movie didn’t live up to my complete expectations but i do believe they have chosen an excellent cast for the movie ‘New Moon’ and personally i can’t wait to see dakota fanning act up as Jane of the Volturi! I think shes the type of person who will do an excellent job! As for zombies, monsters, any of that crap, im not too interested. HOWEVER, aliens scare the shit out of me. After seeing for the first time (unwillingly) the movie ‘Signs’ i’ve never been more afraid of random noises in my house at night. I slept with a jug of water beside my bed for at least 6 weeks after seeing that movie. So yeah, i guess what creeps me out the most is aliens.

And i’d suggest you watch the ‘Kyle XY’ tv series! L-O-V-E it!!!!!!!

Well, what gives me the chills are reading Urban Ghost Legends…like Bloody Mary. But otherwise, I find it hard to find something truely scary—I watched the movie The Strangers—which quite a few did not find scary, but late at night when I was tired–I was more high strung than usual and the movie freaked me out! I find movies about real people like Jack the Ripper or Zodiac give me the chills because the events actually happened. But my most dreaded paranormal creature, therefore my favorite, good ol’ fashioned brain-craving zombies! Or any other creature that is human-like

  41. Music. Anything which is full of raw emotion.

The first time I heard “When You Were Young” by the Killers was at a time when I was surrounded by despair, and the song cut through me like an icy knife.

“We’re burning down the highway skyline, on the back of a hurricane, that started turning when you, were yoooouuuuunnnnggggggg”

I have prepared myself for being a ghost hunter since I was five. Not missing one show that had to do with ghosts. I cleaned out the library of books on ghosts and ghost hunting. Hopefully now that i’m 16 I will be prepared to investigate my first house or establishment.

  75. Zombies are my love. They’re the only paranormal creature that can really inspire fear in my every being (besides aliens, but that’s a different story!). Vampires have weaknesses. They can get tired, they can’t go out in the sun, they almost always fall in love with some girl and end up not hurting her. With zombies, there’s no such weakness. The only thing that can stop them is destroying their brain. When you have one zombie, you always get more because transmission is so easy. You won’t see a zombie contemplating it’s immortal existence because of some chick. That chick is already dead on the floor with her flesh stripped from her body. Zombies are truly terrifying, because they come en mass, there’s no way to reason with them, and they have only one weakness.

  80. Wow, some really odd characters out here! I don’t know if you’re planning to read through all the comments or are even looking for book recommendations.

But if you love Sookie, chances are you’ll love Sunshine by Robin McKinley. The stories are nothing alike…what they have in common is being vampire books and being well written and much loved.

Back OT, I’m with you. If it’s ooky, I’m all over it. I’ve been fascinated by the occult for as long as I can remember. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and it makes the ending of summer bearable. That and the increase in horror movies on tv that time of year.

My passion: For the last couple of years I’ve been heavily into paranormal romances. I’m still going strong there although now I’m at the point of waiting for the next Sookie to come out, and wishing I had HBO. New authors pop up now and then, but few have captured my interest to a great extent.

  81. The show, Paranomal State, gives me the chills every time I watch. Can’t be in the house alone at night after watching that show. I also love other types of fantasy/ paranormal creatures like vampires, witches, werewolves, etc. but anything about ghosts freak me almost every time. Maybe it is just because they have the most potential for actually being real. By the way, I also read and like Twilight, but I would not go as far as calling it well written like some other posters have suggested. Great storytelling and entertainment…yes, writing quality and editing…not so much.

  82. I loved Twilight,Sookie Stackhouse and Buffy the vampire slayer. I have read and seen alot of books about vampires Currently I’m reading The series called Marked by P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast and Night World by, L.j. Smith. Iove vampires! I think I have all the vampires for young adults.I’m only 12. Its werid i wont read anything other than vampires. I tried Maximum Ride Series, about birdpeople. It made me really bored. I’m werid I cant even imagine me reading books or even seeing a show about anything other than vampires. I mean I do watch shows like Daisy of love and stuff but thats it.

  85. The movie “The Happening” freaked me out. For those of you who haven’t seen it, you should. It makes you think, and while it has a bit of mild gore (not worse than NCIS or CSI), it is a good thriller.

Oh, by the way, no one I’ve watched it with has been scared. I’m a scaredy cat, so it is most likely that you won’t have to worry about being terrified or anything.

  90. I am in LOVE with vampire books too! I am also hooked on Twilight. I just had to read it, once I heard it was a book about a love between a human and a vampire! I already finished Eclipse, the third book. All I need now is the fourth book, Breaking Dawn and Im finally finished! But I also get BIG chills when it comes to ghosts especially evil ones!

What could be worse then a very loved anime and manga and live action film, being turned into a horror musical American remake?

Sorry, just thought I’d share my thoughts…what really gives me the chills is worms. I have a phobia of them. And I agree with you, the best paranormal creature:Nothing beats vampires!
Unless, of course, the vampires sparkle, then the vampire is beat.

  97. The tv show Supernatural is AMAZING! I’m so hooked on that and every episode is absolutely captivating and gives me chills. That would definitely be my paranormal obsession! This show has gotten me even interested in the paranormal itself, and before the show horror movies terrified me. Now, I try to watch every horror movie I can. I love Dean and Sam! The Winchesters have got to be the most interesting and familiar characters I’ve ever come across! I LOVE SUPERNATURAL!

  101. I’m a horror fanatic. The only movies/books that have ever scared me are The Blair Witch Project (I first watched it at 2 in the morning XD) and Pet Sematary by Stephen King. Cujo (also by Stephen King) was insanely suspenseful and frightening, but I didn’t get /scared/ scared by it. Whoever got the chills from Twilight needs to see a doctor.

  107. I didn’t understand the frenzy over the Twilight books, as I remain unimpressed by the books and especially the B-grade movie. I am so tired of hearing about Twilight, and equally annoyed at the litany of young girls using the names Edward, Bella and Mrs. Edward Cullen as screen names. Everything about the Twilight series is overly-hyped ad-nauseum…and, like the misadventures of Speidi (Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt) I SO WISH IT WOULD GO AWAY!!

  108. Well, I love Stephen King, but IT made me sleepless that night. I read it all in two to three days. And usually I read in bed before sleeping. I was afraid, imagining that monsters are there in the dark. I couldn’t sleep well those nights. From that time, I stopped reading Stephen King at night. I got really scared that time .
Hm, well, I know what yu did last summer and any scary movie might put me in a transfixed posture infront of the tv. not bec. I like it which I do , but because am afraid to move. (it might be funny to some) but sometimes I feel my body as cold as ice. As if I turned to stone. I also might jump out of my place if the movie has a surprise or someone jumps in the movie. Well, I hope this never happens again.

  112. I am not sure if what I am about to type would be considered a paranormal passion but, I would say WWE. I guess it’s paranormal to some small extent because it’s not a real popular sport and every time I tell someone I want to be a WWE Superstar when I grow up they always look at me weird or say something against it. As far as Vampires I’m not a fan of them but one of my favorite movies is Queen Of the Damned (the movie is based on a novel written by a woman named Anne Rice) and the movie stars the late-R&B singer Aaliyah Haughton.

  114. I’ve always loved the supernatural! Finished the Twilight Saga like 5 times now. Witch craft is also on my list. Loved the Harry Potter books and movies, and any movie involving magic catches my eye all the time. I’m also making my way through the Ghost Whisperer TV show. Ghosts; always a good thing. And I also kind of grew up with Ghostbusters. They are just so friking funny.

Zombies on the other hand I really can’t handle. The Idea of a dead corpse rising out of the grave is just too abnormal.

Too whoever said s**t about Twilight and vampires not sparkling: When and who said that you can’t change the idea about vampires? See in my head my vamps can go out in the sun and they don’t turn into bats or sleep in cofins. So why can’t they sparkle? Stephenie Meyer just had her own vamps. And frankly I like this idea of vampires than Dracula any day.
And this is just my oppinion.

I do not consider mythology and folklore to be in the paranormal spectrum, unless based on an actual paranormal experience such as ghosts and things of that nature. Things that give me the chills… hm, well zombies, ghosts, pennywise, the grudge (I couldn’t shut my eyes in the shower&shampoo BURNS), chucky (my mother had a collection of dolls; HAD), and anything with roaches involved I’m paranoid and freaked for the whole rest of the night.

  139. My scariest chills comes from unseen terror. The Blair Witch Project scared the beJesus out of me. Saw it at the theatre and I was the only one in there and after it was over I went to the restroom and no one was in there and the toilet seat in the next stall slammed down. Almost pee’d my pants. The Exorcist with the newer version with the “stairwalker” scene in it. That freaked me out. Paranormal State and Ghost Hunter does it for me, also. If you want a really good scare, visit the site “The Barton Mansion” and the demon in the closet video. I promise it will shake your soul!!

  141. the supernatural , the under world have never scared me I really started loving it a few years back and I
stillI like vampires the best, with werewolves on their heels as a close second.I love the supenatural, doesnt matter what you call it.Underworld, other world,to me its all the same thing, undead=something thats (generally) come back from the dead, isnt truly alive, and is usually very difficult to (re)kill.I dont really know much about zombies since, theyve never been high on y list of my supernatural list.Im also a fan of dragons, mischievous fairies and mostly any other legendary creatures I love it all. Amelia Atwater-Rhodes has the best vampires in my opinion. Twilght was a really good book(I liked it LONG before it got popular, but her vampires are totally whacked as vampires go(I dont really mindthe change, its a nice-not to mention interesting -switch up(if she wants her vampires to sparkle, then Im all for it .Theyre her vampires, so its her choice)).I was a bit dissappointed with the movie, but I actually really liked it.if they would have made it only 15 minutes ahalf an hour longer, if they had done it right they could have made the movie amazing.I used to be terrified of being home alone.Id imagine terrible things every time the floor creaked, or an animal squeaked,Id have to put music on, to keep myself from freaking out. ive gotten over it by now,but for a while….It freaks me out when I find out people Ive known my whole life turn into someone totally different, .I dont know whos reading this, but just so you know, MY vampires CAN go out in the sun. if they dont its a personal choice., sleep is a n option,Not a necce necessity sity, And whe they do sleep its in a REAL bed, not a cofffin.Im Christian too and I would also prefer no more”im scared of Christians”remarks.oh yeah the question.I hate walking alone at night.:Id much rather not, thanks all the same. I will, but It gives me the chills and I get a bit paranoid.Yes walking alone in the dark=not for me.=(
