Ask Mike: Where’s R2D2?

ask mike avatarHey Guys,

Summer is here (well, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway). Among other things, that means more blockbusters at the box office. Last night, I finally got around to seeing “Star Trek.” I enjoyed it, but while watching, I found myself distracted by my hunt for R2D2.

Now, before you start writing comments beginning with “Wrong ‘Star’ movie, genius,” allow me to explain. According to the rumor mill, director JJ Abrams gave R2D2 of Star Wars fame a very small cameo appearance in Star Trek. I had heard this before I sat down and made a conscious effort to spot the droid, but failed miserably. Did other folks within Yahoo! Answers have better luck?

I found only one question from another person wondering about R2D2 on the Enterprise. Several folks responded to the question with theories on where to spot the brave little garbage can. One wrote that R2D2 can be spotted at the beginning of the film. The droid is apparently one of the repair robots on a ship’s hull. Another responder chimed in with another idea, albeit a vague one. The theory: R2D2 is actually in the “background next to the wall during a dialogue scene.” Hmm…

To be clear, I have no idea where R2D2 can be seen, but according to MTV, the lovable Star Wars vet is in there somewhere. There’s even a contest going on. If you spot him, you might win some nerd-tastic movie props.

What are your thoughts on the summer movie season? Does any movie in particular have you drooling with anticipation? Or does this season’s crop feel a little lackluster? Leave a note and let me know.

Thanks for reading,

  3. Yeah R2D2 was in it. For like 5 seconds. He saved them from some sort of danger, so one of the characters commended him. Said something like, “What is his name?” and someone replied “R2D2″

I don’t know how you missed it. Must have blinked too long. Because it really was no more than 5 seconds.

  4. Well Abrams is supposed to have found inspiration for this movie in Star Wars as much as the original Star Trek TV series. I do remember Yahoo Movies having an article just prior to the movie’s release on what was different between the original series and this movie. And one of the differences was speed. It mentioned that the original series, and into the original series of movies, tended to be filled with these long soliloquies between the action sequnces that seemed to draw things out longer than they really were. And Abarms grew up on Star Wars where the story is told at a faster pace which he wanted to use the pace of story telling from Star Wars for this movie. And look at how their now advertiseing the movie. “It’s this generation’s Star Wars.”

With all that in mind it wouldn’t shock me if there was an Artoo cameo.

  8. Wow! I had no idea that little astromech droid had an appearance in the new Star Trek movie!
I am personally a deep Star Wars fan, but suprisingly enough, I am not so much of a “trekky.”

However, thanks for pointing this out!
(I may want to go see Star Trek a little earlier!)

  9. There’s a new Star Trek movie? hmm…guess I’ve been too busy bbqing, drinking margaritas and playing guitar every weekend to notice. It’s summertime dude…party time.
What’s an R2D2? kidn…haha… you people are something else. Bet you got some Spock ears hid out, don’t you?
enjoy your summer, whatever your pleasure…me I’m taking the sailboat out for a cruise. Think I’ll rename her the M/e Falcon…oops, wrong movie huh?

  10. I think that the R2D2 is really the actor playing R2d2, acting as scotty’s little friend. That little hobgoblin thing. You know, the one on the polar base.

  12. Just because it has R2D2 in it (somewhere), it’s still just another Star Trek movie!
It shows how lame it must be… they need to kidnap one of the most iconic robots in history to get people to watch it!

    Yeah… think I’ll pass.

  13. One is on board of the Enterprise, doing his thing. Yes, it may be a stretch to put R2 reprising his role onboard the X-Wing, but it would be a great way to pay homage to the movies and an awesome Easter Egg.

The other is an R2-D2 passing by on a lift fork, while Kirk and Bones are talking.

I got my info from the URL address above… they have two pictures there also

  14. I couldn’t be bothered looking for something that is basically a gimmick. Why would they put a Star Wars character into Star Trek anyway?

Aside from Star Trek and Angels and Demons, the remainder of the movies look like boring/stupid comedies and sequels. Do we really need another Terminator or Transformers movie? Hollywood needs to invest in some original ideas instead of resorting to sequels and remakes.

  16. I’m a big Star Wars fanatic, and this was the first time I heard that R2-D2 would be featured in Star Trek! Since I’m seeing it today, now I’m going to be hunting for the little robot, too!

And almost all the summer movies in theaters and yet to come (other than Star Trek) are really nothing to jump at. I mean, did you see the preview for the movie Dance Flick? Yeah….you get my point.

  18. I am leaving in an hour to go see Star Trek myself. I will keep an eye out for the little bugger and let you know if I see him.

As far as other movies I was really torn, because I also really want to see X-Men Origins. Wolverine has always been my favorite X-men. But Star Trek won over. :D

I’m really looking forward to seeing the New Transformers movie that is coming out and the New Moon movie from the Twilight series which is suppose to come out in November.

Apparently Schwarzenegger has a cameo appearence, so I’m guessing a strapping German with an accent thicker than concrete will be easier to spot.

  25. I actually didn’t even HEAR that R2D2 was in the film. I’ll have to do my research.

Quite frankly, Crank 2 and Angels and Demons sound like good releases to me. Of course, I don’t think any Summertime movie can top last year’s Dark Night or even Hancock.

    Happy Summer-Movieing!

  37. Thanks for n’fo, still I’ll wait for the dvd. As with a lot of the elderly trekkies, there is too much dis-continuity involved. All be it – it was with the best of intentions to market the property for “The Next Generation”.

Besides, back in the day- theaters really did have big screens. These days a lot of the theaters’ screens are just a tad bigger than some homes’ super sized screens. I have a friend who has a super sized home projector & super maxed out surround sound way better than the theaters. Which is why I’ll wait for the dvd.

  39. I DID hear someone call out “Ensign Vader” or “Cadet Vader” while the Starfleet recruits were being assigned to their ships, but saw no Artoo. The photos posted on the web I either can’t see him or seemed to blatantly obvious (R2′s dome taking place of the reactor dome toward the rear of the Enterprise saucer). My guess is he’s either welding during the Enterprise construction, or part of all the stuff in the “retro bar”, but I’m not going to see the film to find out.

  47. There is a Tribble in the new Star Trek movie. When Kirk and Spock are on the ice planet and find Scotty sitting in his chair, there is large cage behind him that contains a Tribble. You can hear it trilling in the background and the Tribble gets very short screen time, but it is there. I had to see the movie two times before I heard and then saw it. Great to see one in this movie!

  52. I didn’t know that! I’m going to see Star Trek again tomorrow; I’ll have to look for R2D2 this time. I seem to recall thinking I heard something about him while watching the movie, but I dismissed it as another of my stupid moments. Perhaps I wasn’t crazy after all!

I have to agree with Ana that Hollywood needs to make some original stuff rather than remaking old movies and television series, and I’m good without sequels; in fact, I was just complaining about that to my friend the other day. I’m also sick of the movies based off books; are we really that lazy that we must have a book fed to us via glowing screen? Very few books-turned-movies measure up to their original counterparts, anyway.

The new Star Trek is amazing. It turned me into a total Trekkie! I started watching the original episodes the same night I went to see the new movie, and I absolutely love the show now. I’m looking forward to Trouble with Tribbles.

If you had learned about how the seasons really work, then you’d know that for the northern hemisphere (at least aside from right on or very near the equator where the shift seems to only be by one season instead of the two), summer isn’t for another MONTH from the time you posted this. Summer here doesn’t start until June 20th. You might want to look into that.

  83. For those who are harping on this as some kind of “publicity stunt” or, even worse, are saying this is some kind of excuse for Trek to “rip off” Star Wars, you need to do a bit more research.

ILM, the noted special effects company, has a LONG history of throwing little tid-bits from previous movies into current productions as a sort of in-joke. ILM has done the special effects for several Trek movies and all the Star Wars movies. If you look carefully in many movies with optical effects by ILM, you will often find little “Easter Eggs” like this: The next Generation Enterprise is one of the vehicles passing by in the Chancellor’s window on Corusant… The Millenium Falcon can be seen as one of the armada of attack ships in Star Trek: First Contact. With a little bit of effort, you can see this happens a lot. In fact, it is said that R2D2 also makes an appearance in the move Close Encounters as part of the alien mothership.

So this kind of playfulness is not a rare incident… it happens all the time in this genre of movie. In this case, someone hid an R2D2 somewhere in the new Trek film and decided to make a contest of it in the name of fun.

  86. Here’s my 2 cents worth. Watch the scene where Chekov tries to get authorization to make a ship wide mission announcement and his accent gets in the way. the camera swings to the comm panel and you’ll see what looks like a reflection of R2D2′s head swivel on the surface of the panel as well as hear various bleeping sounds in the scene and what sounds like an odd mechanical or ET like “Hiiiiiiiiii” sound. Could be wrong, but I couldn’t see any other reason for this reflection.
