Ask Mike: Where’s R2D2?
Hey Guys,
Summer is here (well, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway). Among other things, that means more blockbusters at the box office. Last night, I finally got around to seeing “Star Trek.” I enjoyed it, but while watching, I found myself distracted by my hunt for R2D2.
Now, before you start writing comments beginning with “Wrong ‘Star’ movie, genius,” allow me to explain. According to the rumor mill, director JJ Abrams gave R2D2 of Star Wars fame a very small cameo appearance in Star Trek. I had heard this before I sat down and made a conscious effort to spot the droid, but failed miserably. Did other folks within Yahoo! Answers have better luck?
I found only one question from another person wondering about R2D2 on the Enterprise. Several folks responded to the question with theories on where to spot the brave little garbage can. One wrote that R2D2 can be spotted at the beginning of the film. The droid is apparently one of the repair robots on a ship’s hull. Another responder chimed in with another idea, albeit a vague one. The theory: R2D2 is actually in the “background next to the wall during a dialogue scene.” Hmm…
To be clear, I have no idea where R2D2 can be seen, but according to MTV, the lovable Star Wars vet is in there somewhere. There’s even a contest going on. If you spot him, you might win some nerd-tastic movie props.
What are your thoughts on the summer movie season? Does any movie in particular have you drooling with anticipation? Or does this season’s crop feel a little lackluster? Leave a note and let me know.

Thanks Mike
i think you seem like a really nice guy buy some folks seem to just want to chat and not care that the reader finds it enjoyable!
Yeah R2D2 was in it. For like 5 seconds. He saved them from some sort of danger, so one of the characters commended him. Said something like, “What is his name?” and someone replied “R2D2″
I don’t know how you missed it. Must have blinked too long. Because it really was no more than 5 seconds.
Well Abrams is supposed to have found inspiration for this movie in Star Wars as much as the original Star Trek TV series. I do remember Yahoo Movies having an article just prior to the movie’s release on what was different between the original series and this movie. And one of the differences was speed. It mentioned that the original series, and into the original series of movies, tended to be filled with these long soliloquies between the action sequnces that seemed to draw things out longer than they really were. And Abarms grew up on Star Wars where the story is told at a faster pace which he wanted to use the pace of story telling from Star Wars for this movie. And look at how their now advertiseing the movie. “It’s this generation’s Star Wars.”
With all that in mind it wouldn’t shock me if there was an Artoo cameo.
i didn’t know about this rumor, and no i didn’t see him i just watched it
I saw the movie twice but didn’t see R2 (not that I was lookingfor him). There is supposed to be a tribble in the movie too, but I didn’t catch that either.
I’ve seen the movie and I don’t recall seeing the little droid anywhere. Hmmm…..
Wow! I had no idea that little astromech droid had an appearance in the new Star Trek movie!
I am personally a deep Star Wars fan, but suprisingly enough, I am not so much of a “trekky.”
However, thanks for pointing this out!
(I may want to go see Star Trek a little earlier!)
There’s a new Star Trek movie? hmm…guess I’ve been too busy bbqing, drinking margaritas and playing guitar every weekend to notice. It’s summertime dude…party time.
What’s an R2D2? kidn…haha… you people are something else. Bet you got some Spock ears hid out, don’t you?
enjoy your summer, whatever your pleasure…me I’m taking the sailboat out for a cruise. Think I’ll rename her the M/e Falcon…oops, wrong movie huh?
I think that the R2D2 is really the actor playing R2d2, acting as scotty’s little friend. That little hobgoblin thing. You know, the one on the polar base.
AH i just saw the movie tonight! i woulda been looking if i’d have known r2 was in it… haha
Just because it has R2D2 in it (somewhere), it’s still just another Star Trek movie!
It shows how lame it must be… they need to kidnap one of the most iconic robots in history to get people to watch it!
Yeah… think I’ll pass.
One is on board of the Enterprise, doing his thing. Yes, it may be a stretch to put R2 reprising his role onboard the X-Wing, but it would be a great way to pay homage to the movies and an awesome Easter Egg.
The other is an R2-D2 passing by on a lift fork, while Kirk and Bones are talking.
I got my info from the URL address above… they have two pictures there also
I couldn’t be bothered looking for something that is basically a gimmick. Why would they put a Star Wars character into Star Trek anyway?
Aside from Star Trek and Angels and Demons, the remainder of the movies look like boring/stupid comedies and sequels. Do we really need another Terminator or Transformers movie? Hollywood needs to invest in some original ideas instead of resorting to sequels and remakes.
Wrong ‘Star’ movie, genius.
I’m a big Star Wars fanatic, and this was the first time I heard that R2-D2 would be featured in Star Trek! Since I’m seeing it today, now I’m going to be hunting for the little robot, too!
And almost all the summer movies in theaters and yet to come (other than Star Trek) are really nothing to jump at. I mean, did you see the preview for the movie Dance Flick? Yeah….you get my point.
so..if R2D2 is in star trek somewhere, maybe they’ll give capt. kirk a cameo appearance…idk where they’ll get the idea for another movie tho
I am leaving in an hour to go see Star Trek myself. I will keep an eye out for the little bugger and let you know if I see him.
As far as other movies I was really torn, because I also really want to see X-Men Origins. Wolverine has always been my favorite X-men. But Star Trek won over.
I to agree that the new Star Trek movie was awesome. My husband and I just went last night to see the new Terminator movie and that was really good to. I’m really looking forward to seeing the New Transformers movie that is coming out and the New Moon movie from the Twilight series which is suppose to come out in November.
R2D2? In Startreck?
The movie I cant wait to see is Terminator: Salvation. I’ve seen every terminator (except the t.v. shows, i wasn’t too fond of them). I can’t wait to see what they have in store for this new Terminator uprising.
i can’t find it…
are you sure that was not a joke?
Hey Mike, can’t say I spotted the litter blighter either. Theres not much coming out that I’m particularly interested in, although the new Terminator film looks set to thrill. Apparently Schwarzenegger has a cameo appearence, so I’m guessing a strapping German with an accent thicker than concrete will be easier to spot.
I actually didn’t even HEAR that R2D2 was in the film. I’ll have to do my research.
Quite frankly, Crank 2 and Angels and Demons sound like good releases to me. Of course, I don’t think any Summertime movie can top last year’s Dark Night or even Hancock.
Happy Summer-Movieing!
~Lish
i bet u can c it on a youtube video…eventuly
im not in that moive;
or am i?
thats pretty funny lol r2d2 is awesome. i’ll be on the look
I have seen the 11th “Star Trek” motion picture, but I didn’t spot S-Dub’s R2-D2. Besides, “Trek” is owned by CBS and “Wars” is owned by Lucasfilm.
Im sorry my fellow Star Trek fans, I love Star Trek but Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen is going to blow EVERY movie away for this year at the box office. Mark my word! I cant wait for that movie!
(Im also a Transformers nut too, if you couldnt tell! lol)
why does your avatar look like you just crawled out of bed?
Oh wow. See, this is why I love JJ Abrams.
Who cares… get a life !!!!
This is not unlike how Lucas added E.T. to Star Wars Episode 1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpQZhPeUjH0
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has me practically jumping out of my seat everytime I see the previews.
I’m looking forward to the second Transformers movie.
Other than that, I don’t really care.
Thanks for n’fo, still I’ll wait for the dvd. As with a lot of the elderly trekkies, there is too much dis-continuity involved. All be it – it was with the best of intentions to market the property for “The Next Generation”.
Besides, back in the day- theaters really did have big screens. These days a lot of the theaters’ screens are just a tad bigger than some homes’ super sized screens. I have a friend who has a super sized home projector & super maxed out surround sound way better than the theaters. Which is why I’ll wait for the dvd.
I have no interest in seeing the movie, but sometimes you don’t see things until you give up “hunting” for them…:)
I DID hear someone call out “Ensign Vader” or “Cadet Vader” while the Starfleet recruits were being assigned to their ships, but saw no Artoo. The photos posted on the web I either can’t see him or seemed to blatantly obvious (R2′s dome taking place of the reactor dome toward the rear of the Enterprise saucer). My guess is he’s either welding during the Enterprise construction, or part of all the stuff in the “retro bar”, but I’m not going to see the film to find out.
I bet this is just a stunt to get fanboys to buy more tickets trying to spot him.
I found a site that thinks they might have it. He’s possibly on the outside of the ship or on a forklift. Here’s the link if you want to see the (blurry) pictures: http://gizmodo.com/5261285/is-r2+d2-driving-the-enterprise
This will be a hoax for snopes.com!
I didn’t see the little R2 Unit. But, I plan on seeing the movie at least one more time. So I’ll look for the, as another well known droid called him, overweight glob of grease.
Hi Mike, and All. I saw the Star Trek Movie on its opening day. I almost missed it because the date changed and it opened a day early. I didn’t see R2DT either. I am waiting for Harry Potter to open. I have read all the books, and can’t wait to see what they exclude out of the next movie.
a google search as follows: site:gizmodo.com r2d2 star trek
reveals the following link: http://gizmodo.com/5261285/is-r2+d2-driving-the-enterprise
Pictures of r2d2 in star trek are already included!
i didn’t hear that. i’m going to see it in imax, so hopefully i’ll be able to spot R2 on the really big screen.
i’m looking forward to a lot of movies. i’m interested in transformers and terminator, but i can’t wait for harry potter and the half-blood prince =]
There is a Tribble in the new Star Trek movie. When Kirk and Spock are on the ice planet and find Scotty sitting in his chair, there is large cage behind him that contains a Tribble. You can hear it trilling in the background and the Tribble gets very short screen time, but it is there. I had to see the movie two times before I heard and then saw it. Great to see one in this movie!
yea i wasnt really paying attention when somebody said “R2D2?”
my eyes got really focuosed and i though, “did i hear what i thought i heard?”
after the movie i found out about R2D2 in the movie lol
You can see him on star wars
Sounds to me like a clever ploy to catch the public’s interest into purchasing multiple tickets to increase sales. In the question you refer to the one reply mentioned how he viewed it twice w/no luck in seeing him but third times the charm. Many other people may see it this way too.
I wasn’t able to find him, but Star Trek was an amazing movie!!
the graphics alone made it incredible… I think its safe to say that ST is the best summer movie this year…
Wolverine= watchable, but dissapointing..
Angels and Demons=sucks
Terminator: Salvation= do NOT get me started on that crapfest!
I didn’t know that! I’m going to see Star Trek again tomorrow; I’ll have to look for R2D2 this time. I seem to recall thinking I heard something about him while watching the movie, but I dismissed it as another of my stupid moments. Perhaps I wasn’t crazy after all!
I have to agree with Ana that Hollywood needs to make some original stuff rather than remaking old movies and television series, and I’m good without sequels; in fact, I was just complaining about that to my friend the other day. I’m also sick of the movies based off books; are we really that lazy that we must have a book fed to us via glowing screen? Very few books-turned-movies measure up to their original counterparts, anyway.
The new Star Trek is amazing. It turned me into a total Trekkie! I started watching the original episodes the same night I went to see the new movie, and I absolutely love the show now. I’m looking forward to Trouble with Tribbles.
LOL! The greatt JJ Abrams has fallen for the newest hoax! MTV fell for it too, but, you haven’t heard it twice on that network….
Wrong ‘Star’ movie, genius.
Ha ha, just kidding ^^; anyway, if I would have known R2 was in there, I would have gone to see when I had money! Wish I could help, but, unfortunately, I haven’t seen the movie!
woah….talking about extreme “I Spy” i never did really notice R2 during the whole movie >_>….gonna watch it again and again and again then
Yeah, looking forward to Harry potter number 6
crazy obsession with animals
I saw a star wars poster somewhere in the beggining of the movie but thats it
Who cares they’re only doing this to add more hype for the Star Trek movie
I think summer movies are awseome!Personally I dont care for Star Trek. But so far all 2{im pathetic}movies ive seen this summer have been EXCELLENT!
I’m waiting for the ’3 Stooges’ movie to come out. Who’s R3D3 or whatever? A garbage can? What do you mean? I couldn’t imagine that in a Star Trek movie.
I thought Star Trek was set in the future..while Star Wars was set in the past? LONG LONG AGO IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY…
Huhhhh…. actually, Mike, no. Summer is not here yet. Not even for us in the northern hemisphere.
If you had learned about how the seasons really work, then you’d know that for the northern hemisphere (at least aside from right on or very near the equator where the shift seems to only be by one season instead of the two), summer isn’t for another MONTH from the time you posted this. Summer here doesn’t start until June 20th. You might want to look into that.
Perhaps this is a publicity stunt to draw more box office sales?
excellent
how do i get best answer from this
R2D2 is the little alien that hangs around Scotty at the polar base. Same actor.
Oh man that is sweet cakes, but seriously I’m happy and all but add some creativity I don’t care if you love the movie stop taking stuff. By the by isn’t he copyrighted?
im so excited about going 2 florda
One of my brothers is extremely anti-Trek, being the Star Wars fan he is. (Loosen up, dude!)
No silly, R2D2 isn’t in “Star Trek”, R2D2 is in “Star Wars”! Even a 6th grade Math teacher knows that.
I didn’t see him in Star Trek. I went into the movie with low expectations and was pleasantly suprised. I really liked it. I also want to see X-Men Wolverine, Night at the Museum 2, Transformers 2, Angels Vs Demons, Harry Potter, and Terminator. Although I have been disenfranchised with Terminator since the series of Fox sucked.
sorry, to say i dont know why i HATE star-trek. i found The Codemned and Untraceable rather entertaining for me. And I like these type of movies.
It has to be a difficult cameo to spot since there is actually a contest to find r2d2. Apparently if you find it you can e-mail the answer to facebook@paramount.com for a chance to win an authentic prop from the movie. Good luck! I’ve seen the movie thrice and have yet to spot it without any help.
wheres R2D2? (it said 2 ask wheres r2d2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R2-D2
This site said R2D2 is in the Star Trek movie. I haven’t seen it yet. My hubby is a ST fan but I am a Star Wars fan and R2 D2 is my favorite.
well, i think you can see the replay on youtube or something. that was featured didnt it?
I saw him! He may have only been in for what 5 secnds but it was amazing because I’m both a star trek and star wars fan (more star wars, but none the less far from the labels “nerd” or “geek”).I always loved him in the movies so it was a great joy to finally see him on the big screen once again!
Could it be that his part is actually the actor and not the R2D2 droid.
Or his part of the scenery upside down so you cant quite see him?
Im going with the small dude the actor on the cold planet.
aww i didnt see him but i did however think that star trek was an absolutely amazing film, i loved it so much!!
Wrong star, genius. R2D2 is in star wars.
Oh wait. lol, I think he appears at 00:17 in the movie. hopefully I ll win something .
When the Remullan ship blasted the Enterprise with what looked like giant star blades, I seem to have seen drones on the surface. Of course, it could have been only my imagination.
For those who are harping on this as some kind of “publicity stunt” or, even worse, are saying this is some kind of excuse for Trek to “rip off” Star Wars, you need to do a bit more research.
ILM, the noted special effects company, has a LONG history of throwing little tid-bits from previous movies into current productions as a sort of in-joke. ILM has done the special effects for several Trek movies and all the Star Wars movies. If you look carefully in many movies with optical effects by ILM, you will often find little “Easter Eggs” like this: The next Generation Enterprise is one of the vehicles passing by in the Chancellor’s window on Corusant… The Millenium Falcon can be seen as one of the armada of attack ships in Star Trek: First Contact. With a little bit of effort, you can see this happens a lot. In fact, it is said that R2D2 also makes an appearance in the move Close Encounters as part of the alien mothership.
So this kind of playfulness is not a rare incident… it happens all the time in this genre of movie. In this case, someone hid an R2D2 somewhere in the new Trek film and decided to make a contest of it in the name of fun.
wow…. just…. wow
i guess they are probably dead due to rusting on their body…. lol…
Here’s my 2 cents worth. Watch the scene where Chekov tries to get authorization to make a ship wide mission announcement and his accent gets in the way. the camera swings to the comm panel and you’ll see what looks like a reflection of R2D2′s head swivel on the surface of the panel as well as hear various bleeping sounds in the scene and what sounds like an odd mechanical or ET like “Hiiiiiiiiii” sound. Could be wrong, but I couldn’t see any other reason for this reflection.
If they really wanted to f**k with people they’d have Q show up (or the Borg) in a Star Wars episode.
:O
DUDE< HE"S TOTSLLY IN THE BAHAMAS HES ALL ABOUT THE SAND AND BABES
When they warp to Volkahn and they fly throught the debris look twards the lower lefthand corner during the seens where they are looking out the window … i think its the 3rd shot when they are looking out the window and he flies by the screen really fast but it is as clear as day R2-D2
