Yahoo, while you work on this update, PLEASE fix the constant glitches that plague Answers users such as myself every single day (e.g. spontaneous and temporary deletion of questions; lag; and those stupid “coffee breaks”!).
Also, allow me to use this comment to voice my opinion about your shortsighted decision to universalize the yahoo profile system. Many answers users such as myself want a unique picture display for EACH yahoo service. We don’t like that our work on Answers is being made so public to the rest of our contacts! You need to AT LEAST make an option that allows us to use a unique picture for our Y!A profile. Thank you.
I hope there will be some new cool stuff. By the way, I miss the old thumbs up and thumbs down for the questionnaire. Anyway, hope all goes well either way.
I hope this also addresses the myriad of complaints, concerns, and suggestions that have been brought up in regards to the recent “updates.”
Somehow, I have the feeling I shouldn’t hold my breath.

Like others I have been concerned at the recent changes.
I had already opted out of IM and E Mail on YA and because I value my privacy and security I have NOW opted to keep my 360 Account prvate as well.
This is NOT because my answers are rude BUT because YA is simply NOT taking into account the personal privacy and internet account security or even personal security of it’s members.

Just as a suggestion, when a link is posted in a question, I would like when you click on it for it to open a new page. This way, you don’t wander away from the question you were trying to answer.

Thanks for the warning… Is this going to be a good or bad thing? Like when you changed it so there is no longer a link to our 360 Profile & Flicker to this NEW boring Yahoo Profile, that is NO ONE likes, with the limited profile picture option. People have been asking if you can change the thumbs up/down so people can’t anonymously thumbs down everyone, like maybe limit the number of thumbs up down they can give & if you make a mistake you can take it back, but only allow it only once. I just think that there are some people that go around & put thumbs down to everyone & there should be a way to monitor that.
What will the maintenance entail?

I hope you address some of the problems that show up every time I try to go from the home page to a contacts question. The “OOPS” page shows up nine times out of ten. If I go onto my profile I can see the questions though.

from simple page not loading correctly when i click to update it says DNS sever not able – i refresh the page and my page i was typing is not there and this makes me up set. Well….. Unreservedly SPAMMERS & CHEATERS reported me and the result my account suspended, and OF COURSE NO WAY BACK for me, tried to contact Y!A and said my content is a Violation.
And until today I still received NEW Contact to become my fan, it’s funny am not present any more BUT received every email from my contact to answer they question….
I wonder if this update removed SUSPENDED members.
I should say Y!A made a BIG mistake by suspending some good members… AND kept the STUPID SPAMMER and the STUPID CHEATER and the STUPID JEALOUS PEOPLE.

Voting for “Best Answer” seems to be incorrect.More often than NOT the correct answer,especially in Religion &Spirtuality section is voted out and deliberately a misleading answer is selected as Best Answer by “Vested Interests”
Again, the YA Staff just don’t get customer interaction. So tommorrow, we are going hundreds of questions on the site that go like “What did they change?”. Is it such a burden for the staff to state “there will not be visible changes the user can see” or “there will be visible changes the user can see, more details later”. In three years the staff should have learned this lesson. I guess the only option is to refer people individually to the YA Staff for the answer to these questions.

Fix the spamming problem. Every question i ask gets answered by spammers. Yahoo! Answers needs to fix the way they reward users for answering a question because most spammers automatically answers questions to get points. You guys should add capcha for each answer or maybe about every 4 questions. What i’m trying to say is just fix the spamming problem!
I did not get notice in advance of the update starting at 12:30. I’m kind of annoyed because I had a question up, typed a really long answer to it on my iPhone and when I hit submit it directed me to a message informing me of the updating taking place. I submitted minutes after 12:30. Thanks guys

I’m concerned about the Checkbox with the ‘Make this my default search’ thing in the advanced search that when I try to put it on ‘Open Questions’ and search again without the advanced search, resolved questions are seen with the other questions rather just open questions. When that happens, I have to go back to the page with the advanced search and type in different stuff rather than waiting for the page to load after clicking on the Advanced Search link next to the search. It seems to take more time than going back to the page. I hope that can be fixed or something because I would like to answer some questions for points rather than looking at people who got points.

Yahoo Answers, you should look at some of these reporters RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY. You can report left and right and get stuff taken down without a moment’s hesistation. eh… FYI scheduled maintenance doesn’t mean any new features and upgrades. It’s just server maintenance. Disc error checking, bug fixing, archiving and sorting and indexing data…….nothing to do with new features but this scheduled maintenance will reduce the number of error and avoid that error page “Yahoo! is having a Coffee Break”
Btw for those who need to use special symbols you can always open a word processor or better a calculus application type the aswer there and then just copy paste it on Y!A

When we pose questions or give answers, each one of has good intentions and would prefer others join too. What you see as vulgar may be okay to the viewers as they do answer with leisure and we learn of no complain, then why delete in the first place? And because we use our very precious time to help and entertain… we find it very discouraging, alarming and truly quite frustrating when you warn us. Infact, we feel threatened and are prompted into answering questions in fear and annoyance!! Some reasons that you give are very ridiculous and can readily make a person abandon yahoo in totality. Do you wish that to happen when you will be left with a few who pretend to own Yahoo answers?

my lower back is literally killing me. i’ve taken maybe 7/8 Tylenol. that was an hour ago. i cant lie down, no position will work except standing bent over to ease the pain. there’s also a loose ball, no idea what it is, in my lower back, i felt the right side and there was nothing like it so i don’t know if it’s meant to be there. i’m only 15 i don’t know anything about back pain.

How about getting rid of all of those stinking advertisements that keep popping up. I am sick of them and have made up my mind to NEVER buy any product whose ad pops up on my computer. I have a pop up blocker but you folks have figured out a way to defeat it. Obviously you don’t have the members best interest at heart. It’s that bottom line, not the members that rules. How about changing that? Get rid of those stinking pop up ads.

Living on the US East Coast, I have not noticed any interruption during the “maintenance” upgrade. Thank you. I do get annoyed by all the teeny-bopper questions for ego stroking, medical/health questions that should be asked of a doctor, advice on dating/marriage/divorce when you don’t know the people or just one side of the story. I do like trying to help people with maintenance problems, parenting and history questions. That is just me.

I suggest you do away with the comment I receive with almost every post: “You’ve used a lot of punctuation.” Some of us older folks actually PREFER punctuation! And spelling, too.
It would send a notification to the people who accuse you of violation and have your answer removed. If you actually thinks they were wrong they should get a stern warning to not do that unless it is justified. There are people who report you just because they don’t like the truth even though you didn’t violate the rules.

How about getting rid of that FREAKIN’ STUPID “Hmmm… looks like you have a lot of punctuation.” bubble. Yes, I am very well aware I am using punctuation; it is a proper part of crafting a paragraph. There is more to writing that periods or commas. Also, I think we are all very well aware that all caps can be interpreted as shouting. That is generally the point when something is typed in all caps. I don’t need the reminder every time I do it. It’s like that annoying paper clip guy that used to be in the word processing software.
There are “teams” of players behind many single-appearing avatars, which would take any actual single contributor ten or more years, 24/7/365 to acquire. I think this is unjust to allow “teams” who use the same email in a network and send off hundreds of messages daily to advance their levels.
Can’t yahoo detect these networks?

Funny that this was chosen to be done the day before taxes are due. Please hurry, I have an important question. I need urgent help.
1. Get rid of those “adult content” adverts. You don’t allow users to post sexually explict content, yet you allow that crap on the sidebar
2. No more anonymous “Thumbs Down”. People abuse that item when an answer has a different opinion from theirs.
3. Deletion of questions/Answers. Seriously, trolls repeatedly ask the same disrespectful/racist/homophobic/misogynistic questions. And when users try to report them, they’re still there. When we answer rationally, it’s OUR answers that are deleted. What gives? If someone asks a smart a s sed questions, they should expect a smart a s sed answer back.
4. Be uniform with your policies & stop sending violation emails with procedures to challenge your violation when you NEVER even read what we have to say. Hypocrites.

Another thing: Program the Spell Checker function to recognize alternate spelling of brand and (especially) place names. As an example, whenever I have occasion to type in “Los Angeles” or :Las Vegas,” SC always suggests “Laos.” And “Monterey,” that lovely city about 100 miles south of San Francisco, always draws the suggestion “Monterrey,” a city in Mexico.
And everybody who has evere typed in the name of the firearms company “Glock” knows what I’m talking about. How do you get “clock” out of that?
To restate, SC needs to be programmed to recognioze more brand and place names. Can we perhaps get an “add” option?

I wonder if this tech problems may have to do with my question being removed by the Answers community. I went through the guidelines, and I haven’t violeted any.
The question was very important, and I got some answers but now I can’t read them because the question was deleted.

It seems that the Yahoo!Answers system performance degrades significantly in advance of your “update” push. Lots of questions can not be found or answered for example. I am hoping that this update improves the reliability of the system as I dislike having to retype an answer that gets lost in the “preview” or “submit” process.

If you’re going to turn off answering, you should turn off question reading too. It’s annoying to spend 5 minutes preparing an answer, only to find out that you wasted your time because the answer part of the site is down.

i cannot change my avatar back to what it was on yahoo 360 all i get is a gray screen with no writing on it at all now im getting is “question is deleted” then 5 mins later it appears so i go to answer it and when i click it says the question is deleted AGAIN..!!!

I would like it if Yahoo could add a teenage dating section. Then I could skip all those “OMG do you think he likes me?!” posts and get to the serious/mature posts. And no more leniency with obscene posters…

Looks like something in the update broke YA. Every question I click on says it has been deleted. But if I try and click on it 2 or 3 times eventually the question will come up.
Guys, give them a break already! They are trying to provide us with a better service, and yet you all berate them for giving us this wonderful free service that is called Yahoo Answers? That is just low.
I have some concerns that I think need to be addressed:
1. Staff members should be much easier to get in contact with. I hate having to wait more than a day to get a response to emails that I send in. You need to work on replying to emails sent to you because some of them are very important.
2. The reason why there are so many trolls on Yahoo Answers is because there is absolutely no prescence of any authoritative figure on Y!A…there are no staff members that are looking for trolls on Y!A, and most other sites like this do that, so why can’t you?
Please fix these issues.

They are deleting every question!
Let’s hope the reliability of the system improves. Yahoo Answers is an absolute joke right now and has been for months. It is incredibly annoying to spend time drafting a detailed, researched and comprehensive reply only to find the site spuriously reports the question has been deleted or that Yahoo answers is currently unavailable. It discourages you from providing such answers in the first place.
Come on Yahoo. Countless other sites around the net can manage it with far smaller budgets and IT expertise than yours. There isn’t really any excuse for it.
All the deleted questions today – are they going to be restored once the “updates” are finished?
I give Yahoo credit for creating this ask and answer but to be honest Google could have crapped out a better functioning system in .5 seconds

I do have one complaint though and that is why do you take away top contributor tags away when we have emergencies like death and cannot be online for a week? I had one for months and now it is gone and I LIKED THAT! When I got home from Texas it was gone and it is not fair. I think you should let us have those tags until we do not deserve them anymore. So what if you have to give out a few more…give us more levels if you have to.
When do the tags come back? I was not even on the leadership board either…..and I should have been…many with less than me were on it.
The Christians and the Atheists dominate Religion & Spirituality. There is a large Pagan community that has moved to Mythology & Folklore. Though many of us work with and give correct answers to M&F questions and enjoy it, It woul be wonderful If Pagans could have our own Answers forum. Though, I am the top Answerer on M&F, I would surely like to answer M&F on M&F and Answer Pagan questions on a Pagan forum. One of the problems is that young’uns are getting Mythology, Movies, and Pagan subjects mixed badly.

It is now after 8AM PDT and I am seeing new questions displayed, but when I go to answer I get either a “This question has been deleted” page or a “Yahoo! Answers is currently unavailable” page.
It has been almost eight hours and there ARE new questions.
What is going on?
My suggestion for future updates is that you have the site shut down earlier. There is nothing more frustration than taking the time to formulate and type an answer, only to get the “oops” page. Would save a lot of time if that “oops” page came up immediately, rather than the site allowing you to look at questions, answer, and review before it stops you. Sort of like a “dead end” sign to prevent someone from going down that road.
Another suggestion, not necessarily pertaining to this update. I would like to see the “best of answers” changed a bit more frequently. Currently, the questions in the sports section of “Best of Answers” are horribly old – mostly 2-3 years. In the meantime, I have seen many answers that are at least as good as those considered the best of, and in some cases, even more informative. And perhaps users should be able to “nominate” for this category. Of sourse, they should still be reviewed by your people, so that people did not simply clog up the system by nominating their friends (or even themselves), but perhaps it would alert you to some truly great questions and answers that you are missing. Or maybe it would be best to simply remove the category all together. If you can’t bother to update it at least more frequesntly than every few years, mayeb it would be better not to have it. As of now, it look slike you threw it tigether originally, and then thought it wasn’t worth bothering to actually update. Eliminating it completely woudl at least get rid of a category that you seem to really not care about. And since you are the only ones that can maintain, the quality and timeliness of those questions reflects on your true commitment to this site. And currently, it looks like there is absolutely no commitment on your part to make that section pertinent or timely. Makes you look a bit lazy in my opinion.

Well, it is almost noon now and I keep getting a “this question has been deleted” every time I click on a question.
Just as a suggestion, when a link is posted in a question, I would like when you click on it for it to open a new page. This way, you don’t wander away from the question you were trying to answer.

Well I just posted a question and apparently it has been posted twice therefore I lost 10 points. Whenever I clicked on my question it shows that it has been deleted. That pisses me off!!!
I hope this includes better spam and troll control. Community moderation is one thing, but when the same nasty spammers and trolls do it over and over, you get the feeling that Yahoo just can’t deal with it, leaving some categories overrun by jerks, and real users have no choice but to leave.
I know that the ‘customer is always right” is a myth. In fact, the customer is often an idiot. But preserving the service for real users seems like it ought to be a priority.

I’ve never seen Yahoo Answers in such a state. Whoever is working on it seems to be in over their head. I hope they can revert it in a worst case scenerio because this is simply sad. I don’t see why they keep making “upgrades” that make things worse and more complicated. Now I get Yahoo pop-ups that I have to close in my mail window too. Can’t we make these things optional?

I too am getting a lot of “this question has been deleted” “403 error, access denied” and “yahoo answers is currently unavailable” screens. This is very very annoying to say the least, but I’m trying to be patient. Please update us on what’s going on. I love this service and I know you guys will be able to fix it. “Strange behavior” is putting it mildly.
I tried to ask a question five times and each time I got a message telling me that Yahoo Answers was “unavailable”. Then 5 questions showed up and I was deducted 15 points. Then 3 of those questions were deleted by Yahoo with no way for me to delete them myself and get back the 5 points from each. The other two questions were both posted and both have answers.

The Travel section needs to be restructured. The Latin America category doesn’t have all the countries listed, just a few and the others are all sumed up in the Other – Latin America and it is a big mess there. Please give us the full list of countries as done with the Europe section.

People are leaving this site in their droves. If you actually want anyone left to use this site, you’d do something to fix it once and for all.

Every now and then, I wonder if the staff understands the Y/A rules and guidelines. Or do they just send a violation email because they don’t like an answer?

Wow….i have to agree with the Violation notices…Many people gave me those, and i was just being honest… then an asshole eventually suspended my account for no reason. Also, i agree with a Yahoo user who think there should be an African Section. I’m sick of discrimation on Yahoo Answers. So consider that,thank you and yess i’m bored.
PS. I remembered i wrote a sincer apology to the Yahoo Account Services after someone had suspended my account, and the person who read it, didn’t believe my reasons, and i question do you people actually read the apolology notes? OMG i was so frustrated and confused.

Whenever you do updates, you really need to get a message up on the site IMMEDIATELY. IN BOLD BRIGHT LETTERS! You also really should consider implementing some other mode than the generic “Question removed” when the real problem is Answers is down/undergoing maintenance. This is not only annoying, it’s misinformation for all users.
Privacy is definitely a constant concern, as others have said. As is spamming (checking for spam and bad/illegal links should be the responsibility of Yahoo at least as much as it is of the community—and I am one of those who will report things, too.)

In the midst of all of your “work” it would be greatly appreciated if you began to read the answers you choose to delete prior to deleting the same rather than simply deleting them becuase “someone” (usually someone who holds a differing opinion and has been shown, by one much more intelligent than the complainer that their opinion does stnad well under scrutiny) has complained.
I just finished answering a very good and valid question andthen a “fundamentalist” reactionary extremist complained and , without reading the post, you simply pulled the plug.
If you want people to have open and honest discussions on this forum then it is imperative that the staff and “judges” at Yahoo demonstrate some simplance of intelligence at least occasionaly which, to date, you have not done.

I never really notice when you guys have updated recently, what EXACTLY do you update? Besides the most recent picture fiasco, which caused an uproar, I haven’t noticed any recent changes, yet, the site is ALWAYS under maintenance. I’m impatient with the downtime, to be quite clear. But, I also understand that we need these “updates” in order to keep our beloved Y!A running. -sigh- It’s a conundrum, for sure. I’m sure, though, with an update this big, there must be a drastic change coming. But I do miss the subtlety, like when you first added the starring option. I went to sleep one night with out it, and woke up the next morning and I was seeing stars. Why can’t it be that sudden and subtle anymore? Is it because the site is larger and expands a rather large range of countries now, including the much hated, Brazil? (By the way, I am only mad at Brazil because the president of Brazil said white people with blue eyes are to blame for the bad economy, and I am white with blue eyes.) Or, is it because you want to lure us into the more asinine of Yahoo! products, like this “wonder of the parrot” thing I read up there? Either way, it has made me come to type a long response to your blog that I rarely ever read. I suppose that’s a plus for you, so good job, if that was your goal to this.

This is pretty absurd. I was in the middle of a long answer. Yahoo deleted my entire post when I tried to preview.
Just a random thought; although it probably won’t be answered, as I expect you guys are already back on Y!A but it still seems to be down for me (saying this because there hasn’t been a comment on this for a while)…
I’m currently on Level 3 and I need around 50 points to get to Level 4. Am I going to be set back to Level 1 after the update because that’s what a lot of people on here seem to be moaning about?
I think there is another site just like this. I might go there. Lets face it…this is a simple questions and answers website. Last time I checked it was not rocket science yet you can barely manage to run it. I think it would be cool if you allowed people to view their favorite sections at the same time using tabs…so you can choose your favorite sections and easily browse all your favorite sections at the same time. Colored text would be awesome too. *___*
There should be a “Games” section as well which allows Y!A users to play word games with each other…like the ones in Polls and Surveys.
There should be a Y!A forum as well…not like this, but like Y!A, just that people can comment on each other and post more than once.
A “makeover” section would be awesome too! It could include home, beauty, lifestyle, etc makeovers where it is basically a place where people post: 1. Where/who/how I am now and then 2. Where/who/how I WANT to be and people can give them advice in achieving that.

Wow! the first time my long and thoughtfully composed answer was “unable to be submitted” and vanished from view I vowed to begin a new habit, which has given me peace of mind.

Once again, Yahoo promises much with new services, a “short” downtime for “updating” the site, and fails to deliver.
I normally find Yahoo (when they’re not doing work on the site) quite reasonable to use, and prefer it over MSN, etc.
However….with the way Yahoo is starting to set itself a low standard and consistently failing to achieve it-I’m thinking of changing. How much bloomin’ longer? And for what, exactly? To get rid of spammers? To get rid of trolls? To get rid of other junk? I’m taking bets it’s to make to script a little prettier. Please get a move on, or else don’t promise what you cannot deliver.

There are a few glitches on Y!A too,like e-mails abt questions being sent “? has asked a question on yahoo answers”…yeah,now i guess its partly fixed as 50% of the e-mails now have the names,but then some do not as well.yes,and i dont think any of my contacts have their names as ?.
oh well,i hope yahoo answers will look even better now!with better columns and more features!
