Keep your contacts updated

Tags:

There has been a lot of interest and activity around our move to Yahoo! profiles.  A benefit of using just one profile for your entire Yahoo! experience means you can now share your Answers activity with those you are connected to via your Yahoo! profile, even if they aren’t Answers users.

Sharing your updates will help you get better responses to your questions and will let you show off your knowledge to your entire social network!

We have added two new “Updates” features to Answers:

  • One notifies your contacts each time you ask a question.
  • The other notifies your contacts each time you answer a question.

Now when you are at the “Preview your question” stage of asking a question, you will be prompted to “Manage your updates.”

This is where you choose whether or not to share your updates with your social connections.

By default, updates will be set to “Don’t share my updates” to keep your content private unless you choose otherwise.

To give you control over what and when you share, this option can be changed anytime you ask or answer a question. You have full control over this setting from the “Edit my profile” page, too.

By not sharing your updates, whatever you do on Answers will not appear on your Yahoo! profile.

When you ask or answer a question, we offer a link to your profile to show you exactly who you are currently sharing your updates with.

Click the “Manage who sees your updates” link to be taken to profiles, where you can control who sees all of your Yahoo! updates.

Had enough of seeing this message?  Check the box and we promise it won’t bug you again.

We’ve tried to make controlling your updates as simple as possible, but if you want more information about managing your Answers updates you can find it on these Help pages: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/answers/updates/

If you are still unsure about how your profile works or how to change features on your Yahoo! profile, check out our sister-blog at www.yprofileblog.com and this specific article that is addressed to Answers users.

We hope you like this new feature-we do!

Happy updating!

  1. “There has been a lot of interest and activity around our move to Yahoo! profiles.”

Is that way way of saying your ill advised attack on our privacy has managed to anger the vast majority of users who have commented on it?

You really need to think about the harm you’re doing the users.

  2. I’m sick of hearing about profiles and sick of the way you pat yourselves on the back like you actually fixed something. I would like to hear about what you have done to fix your broken Community Moderation system. You would have done this already if you really welcome feedback from your customers.

Your silence indicates that when you say that you value feedback from customers you are really doing nothing more than regurgitating a company line.

  3. how do i make my questions and answers hidden on my YAHOO! answers page?

  4. This is absolute nonsense.
this is why i quit my other other account which was at level 6 with 22,675 points and downsized.
i am no longer going to be your pawn—you first delete my questions and answers for no reason and ignore my appeals, but now you are completely destroying my privacy and freedom on this site.
    sad.
    be ashamed

  5. I don’t think any one of the social network would care what you’ve answered. They added you because you either appear to be very knowledgeable or have helped them out with a situation and they say “hey, will you be my contact?” If someone really wants to see what people have answered, they can check their history. Any ways a lot of people aren’t even on that often for this to be effective. And if there were those who are on here often, others would be completely annoyed by how many questions you are answering.
They just want help on what they need help with. That’s why they ask a question! They don’t really care about any one else. We are only virtual friends, we don’t care about another really because we don’t know the person.

When you help others you should not brag about what you do. That’s just wrong. You should do it out of the kindness in your heart and hope that no one else saw and that it was only aimed at the person whom it was intended for.

Leave everything the same! It all works perfectly, there is no need for change.

  6. I don’t see the drop-down menu of options you’re showing.
    This is what I’m seeing:
“You can now share your activity on Answers via Yahoo! Updates
    Start sharing your updates”

Do I first need to check the following box?:
    [/] Share My Updates

Of course I can always use the option below a question, “Email this question to a friend”, or several friends that I think would care.
    ;-)
Is this feature really necessary? It seems a bit redundant to me. But I like new features so I’m not to discourage. Any progress is better than no progress at all. Keep going.

    …..

Also, I really think you should clearly distinguish the differences between ‘Yahoo! Profile’ connections/contacts/social network and ‘Yahoo! Answers’ profile network/contacts/fans… et al (if I missed any)

  10. I preferred the old way of doing it. Simpler.
The extra prompt is annoying. (Y!A was already doing more or less what I want: more bells and whistles = more noise.)

This is just change, not progress.

  11. Anyway, “Share this with contacts y/n?” and two buttons, default set to “no” would be simpler and clearer.

  12. At least you were ‘smart’ and set the default to not update everyone. I’m SURE my family and friends would love to be spammed. What a stupid idea.

  13. So in wother words, you really don’t care that anybody who has the intelligence to understand what you’re doing(and on Answers nowadays, that’s not many)wants you to go back to the way things were, and would rather you stop the reporter trolls you’ve let take over this place and do something about the herd of mouthbreathing children from spamming the same three questions all day everyday, you know, actually do something rightg.

Afford us some sort of privacy, and fix what’s wrong here.
You are NOT listening.Do you think that might have something to do with your current financial problems?

  14. I am amazed. The system is set up to notify all my contacts whenever I answer a question, which may be hundreds a day. Do you think people will be annoyed by receiving thousands of spams a week about my answers or pleased and want to do the same?

  15. What I’m pissed about is that now that they’ve switched to Yahoo Profiles (with no regard to whether I wanted a profile or not) I’m not allowed to use my Yahoo 360 image as my avatar (which allows for a greater variety of images to be added) as opposed to the cookie cutter shape of the images (and size) you can add to Yahoo Profiles.

    THIS NEW “PRODUCT” STINKS!

    ANOTHER fall back of Yahoo…

  16. I do NOT, repeat, do NOT want to share my answers or my questions with anybody that is not on Y!A. I do NOT even want the Option of sharing the answers or the questions with anybody who is not on Y!A.

    So STOP already!

  18. The new profile is generic and awful; I miss being able to blog on 360. You folks at Yahoo really have no concern for the users here.

  19. I have just now realized/discovered how far reaching this aspect of Yahoo is.
Thanks for telling me about this Yahoo. I have not used any of your sites in four weeks…so how long has my private information been available to anyone?
Yahoo has violated my privacy, published things in places I had no intention of publishing, and things I had no plan of publishing at all. Certain information was given as a requirement to participate in certain areas/ and, or set search features and preferences.
You have gone too far this time Yahoo. Many of the things I have found available to ‘anyone’ were set to a ‘friends only’ application for a reason. Seems you don’t care.
    Well, I do.

Are you kidding me? Do you really think that I want my email contacts viewing my Answers activity? NO, NO, NO, NO. I still fail to understand why this new profile feature was so important that Yahoo decided to fix something that wasn’t broken. I don’t want to “show off my knowledge” to my entire social network. If I wanted someone to see my Q&A, I would add them as a contact. And there arises another issue. Don’t you read the Suggestions Forum? Many great suggestions have been put forth, and you choose to implement THIS! We have been begging for you to give us the option to approve fans and contacts before they attach themselves to us. SSDD :-(
