What’s happening to my image?

Tags: ,

Following last week’s announcement, the transition to the new Yahoo! profiles is now taking place on Answers. You will start noticing changes in your image display options. What does this mean? From now on, instead of importing your displayed image from Yahoo! 360, Answers will use the image from your new Yahoo! profile.

For those who like to display multiple images, keep in mind that only one image can now be displayed in all of Yahoo! Services. Yahoo! 360 users should make sure that the image displaying there is the one they want to show throughout the Yahoo! network, and update it if necessary.

To ensure that your Answers display image is the one you want, we recommend you go to http://profiles.yahoo.com now and activate your new profile. Once you’re there, you’ll be asked to verify some information that you’ve previously shared with Yahoo!, and to select the image you’d like to share with the Answers community.

If you have never used other Yahoo! services and haven’t activated your profile yet, your image will show up as the “Gray Face.”

For those of you who display an Avatar on Answers – don’t worry. This won’t change. Both Avatars and nicknames will continue to remain the same on Answers.

  1. Wow, this is a very bad idea. Why is yahoo universalizing yahoo answer with the other yahoo services? So, in other words, the same image I use for my Y!A profile will also appear in places like Flickr? What about people such as myself that operate under a bit of a different style in answers than in the rest of the yahoo network? I really feel uncomfortable with the people on my yahoo profile seeing the image I use for yahoo answers.

  4. I haven’t had the option of using my 360 image for at least 7 months, since my 360 page and all access to any 360 pages mysteriously disappeared. My *answers* profile doesn’t give me an option to use the photo that I have in my Y!Profile…. lemme know when I’ll have the ability, like everyone else, to use an image other than a cartoon avatar. Mkay?

  6. The new profiles are a JOKE. They’re so bare bones that they serve absolutely no important function whatsoever (besides providing our Y!A avatar). Please give us something better than this, or improve these profiles, and soon… because what we’ve got now is an insult.

  7. This is nothing to complain about.

If you don’t like it, don’t use it. If you’re uncomfortable with your photo, or if the profile format is too plain, there are other formats out there I’m sure you’ll like, such as myspace and facebook.

You guys are taking this way too seriously.

  12. it does appears as all icons will appear the same, there was option to use icon for selected profile only as well as for all, this may be not good for some avoiding trolls, and in course, that all users may end up reverting to generic icons or avatars, if option like mybloglog is applied, it would help options for users:

    Update
    ● All my Yahoo! profiles
    ○ MyBlogLog only

also reminder that icon is squarely crop cut, son no longer allowed to use tall images, or full avatar pic,

image are only jpg, would be nice to have animated gif, or png, or swf, someday,

have fun, and condolences to family and friends of Natasha Richardson, ♡

  13. This is just another way Y/a is censoring the material here and intimidating members.
Anyone with an opinion that differs from y/a monitors are subject to disciplinary action for merely voicing their opinion.
Some people express themselves with graphics. (ie: numerous pics and avatars that reflect their attitude without using words) We all know the yamsters will exile you for saying the “wrong” thing. This is apparently another means of quelling dissention.
That or they’re just trying to save a little bandwidth, speed up the site and perhaps cut the costs of this “free for all”.

  21. For two years I’ve not been able to use my 360 image on Yahoo Answers and it still does not recognize it. I click on the link that says to retreive your 360 page and it takes me to that page but won’t link to the Y/A profile. My only options remain to use the blank or the avatar that I created just so I don’t have a blank.

Once about two years ago I received a form letter that Yahoo was aware of this issue with some users and was working to resolve it..but it hasn’t been resolved in all this time. I do not see an option yet to put a profile photo.

  26. I don’t see that most people have filled out the new profile anyway so this is not going to change much. I think it was a good move to do away with the old profiles as they were just used as troll food. Notice that Yahoo employees almost never have an actual photo or any revealing info. Real photos should be disabled except on personals because there are plenty of people who are still not bright enough to recognize the dangers.

Thanks for the heads up, Yahoo person.

  37. What was the reason for this change? The new profile is so plain compared to the 360 profile. You could see our avatar & any pictures we uploaded & flicker pictures. So now since there is no link to our 360 profile, are they doing away with the 360 profiles & what’s the point of the flicker profiles now? This new profile makes a crop the picture & now it looks stretched & we don’t have the option to have full length pictures. I just don’t get it… Why did they change it & make it worse?

  53. This really sucks. I spent a lot of time arranging my 360 profile and suddenly Yahoo yanks it out from under me. The old 360 was a place that I could show users who I was and create a “Room” of my likeness that made the visit enjoyable and entertaining for people who visited. This doesn’t surprise me. This is the same way they operate when they just yank everyone’s accounts. That’s why I don’t trust Yahoo with my true personal information. Go ahead and yank this account too.

  57. I am very unhappy with the so-called changes to my avatar, 360 link and pictures. My beloved kitty avatar went grey and I had to upload my kitties back so I could have my avatar back. And my picture needed to be cropped into a square, cutting off some of my picture. Questions I’m answering show me with everyone else’s avatar except for mine. With all the technology available why can’t changes be made without touching everyone’s profiles, pictures, and links? I’d think that would be possible. If these changes can’t be made without messing with profiles, changes shouldn’t have been made yet. Work out glitches first, Yahoo!

    I just tried sending Yahoo feedback….and wouldn’t you know….that doesn’t work.

If anyone can screw something up it’s Yahoo…..only they can make something a pain in the ass, or make it WAY harder than it has to.

  93. I am tired of yahoo changes that have no benifit at all to the answers users.

I dislike that yahoo took away “our” creativity on the size and shape of our avatar image.

This “cropping” feature that you have no choice but to use, greatly changes most users avatar image, including mine.

I am very displeased yahoo! I tired of things being great as they are and you “fix them” and it ruins the fun of yahoo answers.

Thanks for taking away yet another form of expression and uniqueness from yahoo answers users.

  94. This is a very bad idea. I like 360 way better than this. I can see that majority of people are complaining and I do agree with them. I hope yahoo will take this into consideration and change back to 360. I would like if 360 would expand the “movies, music, interest” parts. They’re just link and to see what a person’s fav movie is you have to click the link. I wish you could just display everything without the need of clicking a link to know about someone.

Basically my point is change back to 360!! just improve 360 with more picture options you could put albums or something.

Who thought this was a good idea???? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Maybe work on all the “coffee breaks” Y!A takes or the fact that questions don’t post when they shoud, or work on the fact that you sometimes have to click multpile times for something to submit.

The new profile forces you to crop the image. I can’t upload it without having to take a HUGE chunk out of it. It looks awful. Plus, it takes longer.

The old format was so much easier and more convenient. This is another bad decision by the Yahoo team.

I also went to my Flickr page and they don’t force you to use the same image. I just changed my Flickr picture to another one and it is different from my Yahoo Answers one, so no not everything is interlinked, at the moment anyways.

  125. I really don’t think this change is THAT bad. And isn’t it the thought that counts? That the Yahoo Team went through all this trouble to create something that they thought that we would benefit from? If they wanted they could shut Y!A down but they’re not are they? So I think we should cut them some slack, stop whining, and suck it up since we really don’t have a choice.

But I agree with what other people said about the image cropping. If you could fix that, that would be great. But if not, then that’s also okay I guess.

  146. What are you all complaining about? This is just to save bandwidth, and because previous sites didn’t have enough usage they weren’t worth the money it takes to run one. Stop complaining.

While I do agree that the new profile is pretty bare bones, I believe this is a Beta version and will have more options in the future. As for the avatar crop, I’m fine with it, because most of my avatar’s are small anyway. And I always got tired of the really long avatars, because they looked more smushed than the smaller ones.

Just be glad they at least gave you a heads-up before doing this, or you might all have grey faces.

Answers quality has gone down the commode sense this idea was enacted. There are to many hackers and virus writers on answers now giving bad information to these noobs and screwing up peoples computers. If this keeps on yahoo answers will have to be done away with because people will just stop coming here for reliable information. If this is not dealt with soon yahoo’s reputation will suffer. Answers will start to be known as the place where people go to get there computers torn up instead of fixed. If it keeps up the site will be put on the malicious list of bad sites. It will all be because of this self policing.

Its a stupid idea and they know everyone hates the idea on what they did. Soon I bet they will realize the change wasn’t a good idea whatsoever. If Y!A took a poll if the community liked the change half would probably say no because everyone I see commenting hates the idea. Mostly everyone wants the old avatar change back. Like I said Yahoo! will soon realize on what they did wrong, but for now will just have to cope with the changes.

I fail to see why in the hell I should suddenly be forced to have a new “Yahoo Profile”. The who idea reeks of face book which I think is a retarded idea in the first place. I don’t care if I can suddenly share more with people or not. If I want to share something about myself that should be up to me. I have my picture displayed on Answers because I think that if you are going to answer questions and often times make your opinions known, then you shouldn’t hide behind an Avatar. Whoever came up with this needs to find a hobby instead of screwing with all of us.

  187. The Answers image I was using was linked from my 360 profile page. The image is too big to be accepted by the Yahoo Profile page so it can no longer be used for Answers unless I crop it. It is a work of art. To crop it is to alter it and to destroy the work of art.

    Why did you do this?

Why did you fix something that wasn’t broken?

Instead of providing enhanced services, you have taken something away.

You took my Answers identity from me and are forcing me to create another one.

Why would you do that to people?

  190. @Madison C: I can complain if I want to. That’s what this page is for.

I’m NOT fine with the avatar crop because my avatars are larger. Plus, it makes everyone conform to the same style, thus Yahoo is actually taking away the individuality of it’s users.

They did not give us a heads up before doing this, and it was a horrible decision.

  191. I never use the yahoo frills. As soon as you get used to using them, Yahoo will change them all over again just to agrivate you. Honestly, they are almost getting as a bad as AOL, who can’t decide what programs they want, how you should learn them, or even care if people want them as long as it has the AOL name. I wonder if Yahoo hired AOL’s rejects.

  197. Well, i suppose that there are pros and cons to universalizing the pic; but i am not totally all for it… mostly because all i use is Y!A and 360.

The biggest issue remains the infamous glitches that prevent us from being able to use the site half of the time (like, as of now i’m stuck with a creepy grey smiley face because my info cannot be retrieved via my profile page *sighs* so i cannot update my photo/AV or choose anything at the moment.) IF those could be fixed (more often?) that would be stellar.

I think that some people will be in favour of this while others will not, but you can’t please everyone. I think the main good point is that tweens can’t pop playboy pictures onto their 360s just to annoy all of us grownups on a continual basis. Other than that, i think that it somewhat takes away from individuality where some like to use a variety of pics to express themselves.

But, it’s not like my opinion counts so whatever. So long as i can still use the site, it’s Green.
    xoxo ♥

  212. I really don’t like this. You are in fact offering less, than we had before. 360 is deleted, as well as all contacts that existed there, basically Yahoo deleted an entire community. Also, I don’t want any information passing between different services. This morning I had to delete a lot of stuff from my profile that Yahoo imported automatically, and that I don’t to be made public. I think there is a breach of privacy here, and if there is I will be taking legal measures. All in all, I’m not happy with the change, I’m changing my homepage from Yahoo to another one. I don’t like to be jerked around.

  223. I am not able to use my favorite avatar. This is not an improvement,YAHOO.It is getting difficult to keep a civil tongue in my head;your improvements are all failures.Instead of ruining everyone’s avatars,go back to the way it was before your failed improvement. Instead of messing up avatars you would be very well advised to fix your FLAWED spell checker and your even more flawed automatic posting software which all too frequently puts questions into the wrong category.
I have a profile but YAHOO doesn’t recognize it!I tried posting my favorite avatar in profiles and it didn ‘t work!
I also don’t want to share any information and keep the page just for posting my avatar.
Your improvements are NOT improvements, but poorly thought out FAILURES.YAhoo would be well advised to listen to what people are saying: go gack to the way things were with 360.

  237. Yahoo want to move to people using their Profile as a hub for all Yahoo activity.

The problems with this are that firstly they have not accounted for the fact that a lot of Y!Answers users linked to their contacts through their 360s and that 360 provided a really good online community for all us Answerers. We liked the blogging and facilities too.

And that’s the second and major problem. If Profiles had been perfected when they were first proposed in October 2008 everything would be fine.

But they are still working on Profiles and so at the moment all they offer is a very basic space that provides none of the customising options of 360.

Quite why Yahoo insist on pushing Profiles while they are nowhere near a finished product is beyond me, but then the whole company seems hellbent on ruining whatever it has that people like and giving us instead what they think we should like.

    It’s sad really.

  245. I usually post on “omg”, another yahoo service, but now since I now that it will show up in every network I don’t feel comfortable posting anything that much anymore. If you’re going to mess with our privacy and spread it around the net like that then we should at least have had a say in it. And these new profiles are a complete joke. When you UPgrade you’re supposed to deliver something that’s better than the previous service. The new profiles are so lacking and boring and if this is the beta version then duh it would make more sense to wait until you have a finished product and something actually better than 360 to put it up. What in the world were you Yahoo people thinking? NO ONE is happy about this and you’re going to lose a lot of people to these stupid changes you guys think are so brilliant! Geez, at least give us a say in things like this! To summarize, these new profiles are disappointing and I would be ashamed to have the name Yahoo beside it if I were you.

Come on Yahoo!, get with the program. Instead of abandoning or changing everything good, why not just maintain what you have and keep your users happy. If bandwidth and resources are trying to be saved,
why not start deleting inactive accounts like ones that have not been used in a one year period and go from there.
There’s a saying that its easy to criticize,

  272. All was updated very easily. No problems with updating images and setting the one I want to use as Primary. Everything else went very smoothly.

  273. When will you update the new profiles to include a section for GROUPS someone is managing, or to incorporate feeds from websites as we could do on 360????

  274. Well, I just don’t want to write my profile; I refuse! Why do I have to make one so I can use Yahoo Services? Why is this have to be obligatory? Why not something that you make only if you just want to. I will lie anyways about all my information in this so call ” obligatory profile” . O.K, I have to write one, but you won’t read the true me, sorry. My life is not for Yahoo to know, and not for me to tell. I’m registered to use the services, hello! This is a very bad idea. Instead of really improving what’s going wrong, Yahoo Answers is messing up with what is right. I hate it and I repeat, I will not write a profile to use Yahoo Answers or anything else. Go put your nose where the real problem is, you don’t need to meddle about my life.

  277. I tried to re-establish my avatar pic. The new “Profile” SHOWS my avatar pic, and when I choose it as my pic, it accepts it, but when I start browsing Y!A, the avatar “character” is used, and NOT the photo I want (or had previously). Why can’t I get the photo (which shows in my profile) to be used?
