What’s the scoop on profiles?

Tags: ,

Back in October, Yahoo! redesigned its core profile pages, giving them a fresh new look and feel, and additional functionality. Your new profile will allow you to manage your image and establish connections with your friends and family, as well as share what you’re up to on third-party sites like YouTube and Twitter. All of this can be done right from your new profile on Yahoo! at: http://profiles.yahoo.com.

So how does this relate to Yahoo! Answers? Currently, the image that displays in Answers is imported from your Yahoo! 360 profile. In the coming weeks, Answers will start using your Yahoo! profile to display your image rather than 360.

Many of you use other Yahoo! services on a regular basis, and we want to make it easier for you to manage your display image across our entire network. You’ll be able to update your profile image in one place and it will display wherever you go on the Yahoo! network.

We understand some of you opt to use images on Answers that are different from those you use on other Yahoo! services. To confirm that the image that we will soon be displaying on Answers is the one you want, we recommend you go to http://profiles.yahoo.com now and activate your new profile. Once you’re there, you’ll be asked to verify some information that you’ve previously shared with Yahoo!, and to select the image you’d like to share with the Answers community.

If you have never used other Yahoo! services and haven’t activated your profile yet, your image will show up as the “Gray Face.”

For those of you who display an Avatar on Answers – don’t worry. This won’t change.

Both Avatars and nicknames will continue to remain the same on Answers.

We want to make the transition to your new profile on Yahoo! as straightforward as possible for you. So go to http://profiles.yahoo.com now and let us know what you think of it.

  1. Is this thing gonna work any better than 360?

If this is intended to be all so integrated, how is it that I am signed into Yahoo!, but In this window I’m seeing:

I’m using Yahoo! Profiles, I have a picture in it, I’m signed in, why doesn’t that show up here? Is that how well it’s gonna work in Answers as well …

    Unimpressed …

  3. So will the current yahoo 360 close completely, and will the yahoo 360 category on answers be replaced with a my profile category.

  4. I honestly don’t like this new set up. -_-
360 allows me to post MORE than JUST one picture, making me much happier.
The profiles only allow one picture, and I cannot change the layout. I can’t personalize it to MY likings; therefore, Yahoo! 360 is still better, in my opinion.
If you guys could make the Yahoo! Profiles allow us to post more than one picture, AND let us change the page to our wanted personalized settings, then I’ll happily use them, no fuss.

  5. It strikes me that if you are merging things, users should get the choice of what is merged. Functionality to let the user select what info from what profile is used anywhere should be added. Users didn’t get a choice when profiles rolled out and data was lost.

  6. Wow.Another useless cosmetic patch job.How about you do something about the herd of 10 and 11 year old girls spamming the Entertainment and Music boards with ten thousand versions of the same five questions all day long,or the reporter trolls you’ve let take over the entire board?

The avatar in your Yahoo! Mail is powered by your profile– did you go to http://profiles.yahoo.com and activate your new profile? Doing this (and updating your image there) will update your image within mail.

  11. @Floyd,
Profiles imported in information from your 360 profile as well as your old, established profile. Since 360 is still alive, if you feel as though there’s information missing from your profile that was on your 360 page, by all means, bring it on over.

The “Community Module” to the right is powered by MyBlogLog. Though MBL is a Yahoo! property, you do have to activate your account/create an account with them to show up in the community roster. It’s not directly tied to your Yahoo! ID and whether or not you’re logged into the Yahoo! network– it’s tied to whether or not you’re logged into the MBL network too.

It doesn’t directly relate to profiles, so hopefully MBL doesn’t change your opinion of profiles, since they’re two different entities.

  13. I have no desire to share in the ‘new’ profile page. I don’t wish to partake in it. I have enough friends /contacts right on answers. I don’t want to be bothered with all of this stuff…how do I get it off of my mail page?

  14. If I keep my profile hidden, I can still use the picture as my Y!A avatar, right?

  15. I don’t like what Yahoo has done to our ORIGINAL Profiles at all. Why can’t they just be put back the way they WERE? When something just works, DON’T “fix” it! I liked the way our profiles were just before all this 360 garbage started.

I, too, would now like to opt out of Y Profiles altogether. They do me no good any more like they used to.

  16. Each new change is another anoyance and a set-back. First you changed from the standard profile to 360. Now you want to go back to a standard profile. Every time, we have to endure the bugs and learn some new tricks… then you change it again. You also screwed up the mail recently with the new chat box. That makes checking the mail take 5 times as long. I’m getting totally sick of yahoo.

  17. It seems Yahoo! has still not grasped the key to leadership, and that is creating what works and leaving it alone. They constantly force changes on us that make it stupider, harder to use, or faddish. Then they wonder why their shares are dropping and why MS wants to move in and take over. Yahoo! is indifferent to what its users want and then wonder why they are not doing as well as they could?

If I wanted a social networking site, I would use one instead of Yahoo! Why can’t Yahoo! be Yahoo! and let everyone else be who they are?

If you wish to disable connections from your mail page, just follow these steps:

If you’re using Classic Mail, click on “Options” and then “Mail Options” in the top right corner. Then, click on “General Preferences.” From here, deselect the box that says “Enable Connection-related features (Messages, Suggestions, Updates)” Click Save.

If you’re in All-New Mail, the steps are similar. Just click on “Options,” and “Mail Options” in the right corner. Under the “General” section, deselect the option of “Enable Connection-related features (Messages, Suggestions, Updates)”

Connections should disappear from your inbox.

    Hope this helps!

  21. What will happen to all of my blogs from my 360 page? Is there a way to import them to my new profile? I don’t want to lose them. Why do you keep fooling around and changing things.360 was fine until you started fooling around with it,which is why I moved to Multiply.

  23. You just continue to alienate and drive people away.

What with your reporter trolls, unwillingness to stop the underage posters, your refusal to ask the users what they want before you go screwing something else up,it’s no wonder Yahoo is the biggest lame duck on the Internet.

How about you clean up Answers, change Yahoo Mail back to its old functional self, and allow the users to choose how they want to display their info?

And fix all the broken peices of Yahoo, like the out of date directory listings, the image search that only works once in a while, the links to nowhere, etc.

You keep adding bloat, slowing down the site, going out of your to screw up what does work, and you wonder why people complain.

It’s simple.Don’t break anything else, and fix what you’ve already screwed up.I don’t think you realize how much people are beginning to resent Yahoo.

  26. The profile idea seems to indicate Yahoo hoping to turn its user base in to a community, such as Facebook. I’ve notice, we are able to comment on a LOT of news/interest stories, such as a blog does.

It’s a great idea, but Yahoo is implementing it wrongly.

  27. Will these ultimately be combined with our Yahoo! Answers profiles? I fail to see the reason why we need something separate, when it’s all just the same information. (PS: I like the design!. :) Very minimal.)

  28. What friends and family? YouTube? Twitter? Who cares? I’m the only one using this so called site, I don’t share it with anyone else, hamster boy.

If you want to improve this place, get rid of the pubes who post use it as a homework or fandom site. Loose the ranks. When I see that orange bar all I think is “here’s another looser with too much time on their hands doing cut and paste answers”. Few of these wastes of oxgen actually compose thought out answers of their own.

I bounce all over the place and have received best answer in several catagories, but I don’t see you passing out candy-ass colored bars for that.

Who gives a crap about using non Yahoo avatars? All it says to me is “Oooo…look at me, I’m so friggin important and special”.

  33. One of the most annoying problems I see is the report button. I understand why you have them, sometimes people ask offensive questions that need to be removed, but unfortunately people abuse them. Instead of using the report buttons as they were meant to be used they are using them to report people who they do not like, or questions and answers that they disagree. I know so many people who have had their accounts suspended because of people who report them every time they see them.

This brings me to another point- you need to review the appeals. I have had many answers reported only two of them actually broke the rules. The rest were simply answers that other people disagreed with. I have tried appealing to the Yahoo answers but they never did anything. Instead I simply get an auto response a day later. If you guys have time to design useless new updates that are only going to slow down your system then you have time to actually examine the reports and appeals that are made.

I like yahoo Answers, I really do, the people are nice, the boards are interesting, and for the most part it’s easy to use. But this place doesn’t seem to care about the users. The staff seems to be so preoccupied with twiddling their thumbs that all the important problems that need to be dealt with are completely ignored.
