What’s the latest on Leaderboards?

Tags:

We are excited to announce that the Category Leaderboards are now accurate and updated. We are working on a fix for the “overall” and “weekly” Leaderboards as well, and we’ll let you know as soon as it has been completed. As part of this update, we are also correcting how we calculate Best Answer percentages, so deleted Best Answers are ignored in the calculation. We know this is long overdue-many thanks for being so patient.

These changes may affect you in different ways. The Category Leaderboards will now be more accurate, reflecting recent points and deleted questions and answers. As a consequence, some of you will be promoted up the boards-similarly, others might slip down a little. Remember that inclusion in the Leaderboards is based on which country’s Yahoo! Terms of Service agreement you sign. For example, only users who signed Yahoo! France’s Terms of Service agreement will be seen in the French Leaderboards.

Thanks for your patience with us on this. The fix was not as straightforward as we had anticipated. We hope this helps to make your time on Answers a little more enjoyable.

  1. Is there a way to go directly to your own place in the leaderboard? Right now the only way I have discovered to get around is to painstakingly page through.

  4. No, they aren’t fixed yet. A quick review of the top 2 answerers on CYCLING the leaderboard shows they are reversed.

  5. of all the problems plaguing Yahoo Answers…THIS is what you concentrated on?
    sigh
I’ve said it before, and I will say it again..the points have never meant anything to me. The only ‘good thing’ about them, was when one reached the level where one could answer/post questions and e-mail contacts etc. without worrying about running out.
I’m not going to list my concerns, the things I think you would have been better served fixing…there isn’t enough space..and I don’t have the time to waste doing so. And yes, I meant ‘waste.’ It is a waste of time trying to open a dialogue with a non existant customer service.

  6. one of the quickest ways to find yourself on the board: estimate what page you may be on. on the URL listing is the page listing, copy this URL and type in the page you might be on. Or to jump numerous pages.

  9. Thank you! It was very unfair for those people who deserve a place on the Leaderboard to not show up for 8 months and also for those people who should’ve dropped out of the Top Answerers list to remain on there even though they shouldn’t be.

BennBJBear and Oboewan… I suspect you two don’t have a place on the Leaderboard. Well, let’s say you were #1 in one of the categories. Would you put up with being #2-#10 or not show on the list for months and months when you deserve to be?

Maybe people like you don’t care because you’ll never make it into the Leaderboards but there are those of us who do (who’ve worked hard on it) so don’t criticize Yahoo! Answers for this.

  10. Thank you folks. Points are not my personal driver, but I have had emails asking what happened to me. I love to get a “Best Answer” from an asker. Usually makes my day!

  11. there does seem to be some basic confusion as to where Leader-board is ( in main profile on left, down below personal profile), and where Top Ten Answerers are ( at the top right of each subcategory listing ) both appear to be ok, though some tend to view main US list instead of Country listing , (ca, uk, au, et cetera…), have a nice evening,

  12. Why would you delete a BEST answer?

How long does a BEST answer stay on Yahoo Answers before it is deleted?

I understand deleting all of the other answers to a question but NOT the BEST answer.

  14. That is good news. But it’s too late for my friend BEC,who left Answers for two reasons-the Leader Boards and troll attacks, false reports, and Yahoo’s inability to see the truth.
I joined last month and have worked very hard;according to my numbers,I should be on the leader boards for Royalty now.I have a bet with BEC;she’s suppossed to take me to lunch if I get on the leader boards.

  15. With the leaderboards, can you please make it so there are MORE LEVELS!
The highest level so far is level 7, i mean whats up with that? You should extend it to atleast level 50-100.. You should make the range of levels more broad, basically everyone is the same level

  16. I lost about 1000 best answers… That’s a lot of deleted answers. Its odd when it was stuck on one number so long and then you see another, it makes you stare at the thing. Not a complaint just odd.

  18. The point scores are worthless since so many people just create multiple ID’s and then pick their own answers as best. Anyone with more than a 10 percent best answer rating is probably cheating. Why don’t you check and see how many of the best answers of those people were picked repeatedly by the same other phony ID ?

I agree with Oboewan that moderation is what’s most needed, not fixes to a point system that is basically completely disfunctional anyway.

  20. Wow! And then I was so excited to read this, went to see my favorite category and whoaaa!!! Still I’m not in the top answerer huhu… It is still the same as before, the number one having 11 best answer only and me with more than 30 I think is still not there *sigh*

  25. Leaderboards?!?!?!Leaderboards!?!?!?!

    WTF!?!?!

Why don’t you try to take care of the fact that more and more boards are being taken over by 12 year old trolls?
Or why don’t you do something about the reporter trolls you’ve let terrorize the rest of us instead of taking the time to actually moderate the boards yourselves?
    Do your freaking jobs

Nobody gives a damn about your stupid leaderboards!

  26. Well this is good. I should be number 2451 on the board and I am not on there at ALL!

Wonder how many others should be there and aren’t !

In any case…it is good. I would also like to see more levels..it kind of takes away from the excitement without a goal to achieve! :) ))

  27. Oh..meant to add…I would also like to see something done about the unfairness of trolls that cause us heartache. They are out for the Top Contributors and cause us a lot of headaches. Sometimes they follow you around the board and report you one after another for NO reason….and this can go on for days.

Something should be done about THEM..but all they do is get another account and start over. It has caused some Top Contributors to lose their ID’s and that is not right.

  28. To be honest, format of Y/A is great for short quick solutions and trivia tip bits. Set a very high standard for things worth archiving, that will solve much of the headaches. Anything more than 6 weeks old should be just cleaned up.

Forget about points, levels, thumbs up and down, they ruin the community spirit too much and turn the whole idea towards competitions which is not what it is about. Reality is that people are empowered to do one thing, unregulated censorship instead of self disciplines.

We don’t see hall of frame players demanding to be placed there, so why should users be so hostile on making to the board? It is not a right, but a discretion of Y/A to single out people for the great contributions, that how I understand it.

There is no AI smart enough to regulate people hellbent-ed on making havoc. Those with more experience on live could shred some lights on this.

Anyone with a more serious and in-depth interest should be joining moderated groups. It was one of the best features until they were all infested.

My time on the soap box is up. : )

  29. Hi,

I’m just wondering if this will affect your rankings on the main Y!A leaderboards (.com). I am Canadian and agreed to the Yahoo Canada terms of use, but have spent all my time on the .com site, not the .ca …
(Y!A Candada is not really used at all, and everyone just uses the .com site).

I am currently at #3 in one category, and I don’t want this to be removed.

  32. I agree with those saying that your time shouldn’t be spent on LeaderBoards. It should be spent fixing the whole false reporting issue (I know a few people whose IDs have gotten suspended due to intentionally false reporting- this is a big issue), trolls, and better moderation. Among other things.

And Melvin, it’s not that they don’t care about the Leaderboards because they want to be there and aren’t. It’s that there are seriously other things that should be fixed before worrying about the accuracy of the point system, because the Leaderboards isn’t one of the more pressing issues here on Y!A.

  33. What about the green outline around the users who are participating in the category in which they’ve made it onto the leaderboard? That was a feature a long time ago and then suddenly it disappeared.

  34. I don’t really see the point when questions and answers are arbitrarily given violations and removed for no other reason than spite. It’s just too easy for someone with 2 ID’s to follow people around, being petty and immature, making reports and then backing them up with their other ID. This leader board thing, while interesting only effects a really small %, the trolling is affecting everyone, and is v. annoying. It’s unpoliced, unsupervised, censorship in a nutshell. Getting a violation for nothing, and getting no explanation for it, it’s a bit KGB don’t you think? I think if you were to conduct a survey of your users you’d see that the spiteful reporting and resulting violations are the biggest gripe people have with this site.

  36. When I read this, I though “At last!!” but alas, I can’t see that anything has changed. I thought the category leaderboard were the ‘Top 10 Answerers’ on each category page.

If that’swhere the category leaderboards are displayed, the Travel-Australia categories haven’t changed at all and are still completely wrong.

Am I looking in the wrong place? Where are the category leaderboards?

  38. Of course you haven’t done anything to fix the broken Community Moderation system. I think in your last blog more people were crying out for that to be fixed.

Comment posted on March 5th, 2009 at 12:56 am by simon
  39. Yeah, as mentioned, the complete lack of moderation and the complete lack of customer service (i.e. your question/answer gets deleted because it offends someone or they don’t agree with it… there is no explanation of what terms of service you supposedly violated… you appeal it, and get back a form letter saying that you did indeed violate the terms, still not specifically saying anything about what you supposedly violated..) yeah, that would be your biggest problem here. Ermm glad you fixed the leaderboard though, yeah this place will really be great now (/sarcasm)
