Ask Mike: Who is St. Valentine?
Hey Guys,
Like New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day is one of those “love it or hate it” holidays. But, even if you’re not a fan of February 14th, there’s no avoiding it. Over the past several decades, it has turned into a huge friggin’ deal. So, who is the real “St. Valentine”? Was he as romantic as the folks at Hallmark would lead us to believe?
I wanted to find one guy we can all blame for the candy hearts and corny cards. But, according to the experts at the History Channel, not everybody agrees on who St. Valentine really was. One of the more popular theories claims that Valentine was a priest (irony alert!), who served in third century Rome. According to legend, Emperor Claudius II believed that single men made better soldiers, so he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine “defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.” He was later put to death for his actions.
History.com writes that some believe St. Valentine actually sent the very first Valentine’s Day card. While locked up in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. “Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed ‘From your Valentine,’ an expression that is still in use today.” History.com acknowledges that this is more legend than fact, but it does make a nice story.
So, why is it celebrated on February 14? I assumed it was because this is when St. Valentine was either born or died. Apparently, that may not have been the case. Some experts believe that the Christian church might have started celebrating Valentine’s Day in the middle of February as a way to “christianize” certain celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival.
Things have obviously changed a bit since then. Folks started handing each other handmade valentine cards in the 1700s. “In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.” Eat your heart out, Hallmark.
What do you guys think of Valentine’s Day? Love it? Loathe it? If you aren’t a fan, what is your favorite holiday? Please leave a comment below.

Depends on the year.
Single: hate it
Taken and happy: love it
Taken and fighting: hate it even more
well i love valentines day. even if i didn’t have a bf. which most of my life i didn’t. im 23 and didn’t start dating till i was 20. when i was a teenager i kind of didn’t like valentines at the time because i didn’t have a bf so it made me depressed. but i really love it. i am a hopless romantic. i love romance. but i loved valentines the most when i was a kid. my parents always gave me gifts and candy on that day, it made me happy and feel good. to know that i was loved. it was kind of silly of me to not like valentines as i got older just because i was single. i was like oh no here it is again and still no bf. lol. but valentines day isnt just about your date bf, or gf. its about anyone that loves and cares about you that wants to show it. rather it be your lover or a friend or you mom. thats why i like it. its one of my favorite holidays besides christmas. i like them about the same. christmas is similar in giving gifts and spending time with the ones you love. the only differnece really is christmas is supposed to be about celebrating jesus. well for my religion it is as being a christian. others might not agree. anyway. im glad there is valentines day. my favorite suckers are called luv pops and they only sell them around valentines. booh-hoo. thats the only thing that sucks. i love those things. mmmh cherry.lol.
I hate Valentine’s day. If you’re taken, it is just more pressure, and if you’re single: just another huge reminder of the fact. If you love someone, you should tell them everyday, and shouldn’t need a holiday to express your feelings.
Thanks for stating the fact that many holidays (or Holy Days) from invading religions placed their occurrence at the time of an existing Pagan Holiday, thus Easter also pagan “Ostara” and “Lupercalia,” and of course Christmas, Yule is at the Winter Solstice when history traces Jesus of Nazareth’s date of birth in the Spring.
Oh, BTW, you can thank the Ukrainians for the “Easter Eggs,” which were not laid by bunnies, especially boy bunnies.
St Valentine ‘not saint of love’
Britain’s Roman Catholic Church is advising lovelorn singles to direct their February 14 requests for love to St Raphael, rather than St Valentine.
Over the years St Valentine has come incorrectly to be associated with finding love, the Church says.
He is the patron saint for those who have already found their soulmate.
St Raphael is the patron saint for happy encounters and it is to him those fearing the Valentine’s post should properly direct their prayers.
Oh dear…how about we just have LOVE day everyday???
I hate Valentine’s Day…it’s way too commercialized for me. (Plus I’m always single when it comes around…)
I prefer Halloween. It’s fun to dress up as something totally NOT you and get candy for it…or just party with friends.
I believe in the first legend that you wrote about Valentine still marrying men despite the emperor not wanting him to.
Wow, I didn’t know St. Valentine’s went back several years ago. Interesting post Mike! Valentine’s Day is alright. It depends on the person though….
Something to add to this is that St Valentine is buried in Dublin, Ireland.
Goodness, I absolutely abhor it. Always have.
I believe the only good thing about it is the free candy.
Otherwise, it’s just a time to be extra-gushy and extra-stalker-like to those you love, or like.
Besides, I don’t like pink.
No holiday is a good holiday.
(I sound so senile.)
we just simply do not have it… so, it seems to be a very stupid holiday for an outsider – what do you exactly celebrate? and why?
I don’t really like what Valentine’s day has become; it’s too materialistic. My boyfriend and I don’t celebrate it; it wasn’t even mentioned between us at all today.
All my girlfriends think it’s the greatest thing ever, and think it’s absolutely horrendous that my boyfriend and I don’t celebrate it, which is incredibly irritating.
I don’t mind it, it’s just been taken too far, like every other holiday this world has become to know.
hi i think st. val. livces near me hes really nice but i think he moved
True, St. Valentine was a Roman Catholic Priest and he started the whole sha-bang ! Not only did the jailer’s daughter have tender feelings toward him, but there is some evidence that she was blind and that St. Valentine miraculously gave her back her sight ! Actually, the Roman Emperor liked St. Valentine initially, but changed his mind when St. Valentine tried to convert him to the faith ! Not a good thing when you’re imprisoned and depending on the kindness of strangers…lol..but, he did keep the faith !
Happy St. Valentine’s Day everyone.
I don’t know. I love Valentine’s Day this year because I have a date. And there’s something so fun and exciting about going out to shop for a new outfit and getting all fancied up for a night out and knowing he’ll, finally, be looking fancy as well, perhaps with flowers in hand.
Snnaps! xD

just another way for companies to make money and for insecure people to feel even worse about themselves because they don’t have a “valentine”. i’ve been married for 25 years and both of us hate the commercialism.
Hate it. My favorite is July 4th because it doesn’t require much. It feels more like a holiday that actually serve me. Valentines, Christmas, and Birthday’s all seem a little hollow to me, getting and giving gifts on the appointed day because it’s expected. I like to be more sincere and in control of my sentiments. Expectations make it all feel so forced.
I don’t really care about it.
im not a fan of Valentine’s day but i am a fan of Christmas Day . It is a day where a spend my time with my family. Doing things together, and watching the snow gently fall to the ground. We would eat cookies and having dinner together. i LOVE christmas. And i love new years eve!
hate it
St. Valentine’s Story
Saint Valentine is said to have lived in Rome during the third century. That was a long time ago. During this time Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Many people did not like the ruler.
Claudius was having trouble getting men to serve in his army. He felt many men would not volunteer to join because they did not want to leave their wives and families. He thought that if men were not married, they would join the army. So Claudius passed a new law which did not allow any more marriages. Most people thought this law was cruel. Valentine, who was a minister, did not support the new law.
Even after Emperor Claudius passed the law, he kept performing marriage ceremonies secretly. One night he was caught and thrown in jail and told he would be put to death.
Many young people came to visit Valentine. One was the daughter of the prison guard. On the day of his death Valentine wrote a note to the daughter signed “Love from your Valentine”. This was on February 14, 269 A. D.
Some say this started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day.
There were two people named Valentine, both Catholic priests. One helped people the other married people against the Roman Law. They were both executed on Feb 14. (short version)
That was very interesting!
Sure, St. Valentine’s Day is okay…But I do feel that the jacking up of flower and restaurant prices in addition to the mandatory card purchasing taints the whole sentiment, doesn’t it? My fave holiday? Halloween by far. Kids getting free candy, creepy costumes, no big holiday dinner or in-laws around…what could be better?
Why must christians bring their religion into everything?
Though I’ve never been sure why, Valentine’s Day has always been my favorite holiday. I guess at heart I’m a sopping sentimentalist; every year I spend hours hand-making cards for everyone I know at school, even people I’m barely acquainted with.
For me this is a really interesting article; thanks for posting!
I think that this person was a great man…but I don’t agree with some people, that think that this day is “the friendship day”,I think it’s totally stupid!
you said friggin’ lol!!
Anyway I like it and i can’t stand it sometimes it just depends if i’m lonely or not lol.
Those are nice legends, guess we’ll never know which one’s real.
This article was really good, im not a fan of valentine’s day, but it comes for us whether we like it or not! My favorite holiday has to be Leif Erikson day
(Just kidding!) It’s actually a tie between Halloween and Christmas. The absolute best!
Our Valentine’s day was oringinally, a pagan sex rite, but as the rise of Christianity increased, many pagan rituals were simply converted to Christian celebrations instead.
This was supposted to make the transition easier for peasants who would not understand the details of the change.
St. Valentine is therefore, a figment of the Vatican’s imagination, and never really existed.
Now the opportunity is taken by commericial businesses to take advantage of this.
Thus our now materialistic “Valentine’s Day”.
Hope this helped.
Etain
I enjoy Valentines Day- ONLY because of all that delicious candy! Yum!
Have a nice evening everyone, and Happy Valentines Day- Enjoy That Candy!
~Mutt
Well,
Valentine’s Day sounds like a scam. It lacks history and evidence. No matter if the history is bogus, I still love it. It’s a day for couples to celebrate their love. For men and women to find love.
Bottom line – great holiday, sucky history.
I personally enjoy Valentine’s Day, because it gives me a chance to let my wife know how much I love and appreciate her, and gives me an excuse to be romantic with her as well. It also is an acknowledgement that without that special someone’s help, life would probably be a much harder row to hoe. Facing life’s vicissitudes without a special, close someone would certainly be a much grimmer task, and heaven knows life can sometimes be pretty grim, even when someone is there to encourage and cheer one on. So I say more power to Valentine’s Day. May it continue to encourage and inspire those of us who seek the love of others to continue to give it as well. Yet not only to those special loved ones in our lives, but also extended in the form of brotherly love to those people we meet in what can often seem like the tedium of our daily exitence.
Very interesting story! Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. Due to all the chocolates.
The name Valentine comes from the Latin word ‘valens’, which means strength or health. (Remember that the next time you hear Ritchie Valens ‘La Bamba’.) While there were several martyrs named Valentine, the three dead dudes remembered on February 14th are Valentine of Rome (a priest, died about 269 A.D.), Valentine of Terni (a bishop, died about197 A.D.) and Valentine of Africa (unknown) all of who were killed by Roman Emperors for their Christian beliefs. (Oooo, how romantic). The first two Valentines were buried somewhere along an ancient Roman road called the Via Flaminia, their relics now stored in three different churches. One of them is thought to have been buried on February 14th, hence the date.
February 13-15 were also the dates of a Roman festival and rite called Lupercalia which was supposed to purify the city and insure fertility in the months to come. (In mythology, Lupa was the she-wolf who suckled the infants Romulus and Remus, who became the founders of Rome). Lupercalia was later replaced by a festival in honor of Juno, queen of the gods. It’s possible the early church placed Valentine’s Day on the 14th to Christianize a pagan holiday, though there’s no solid evidence to support that. Up until 1969, the Catholic Church had eleven Valentine Days on it’s Calendar of Saints. February 14th (and presumably the rest) were removed and left to national calendars because other than a name and burial date, nothing was really known about the saint(s). That’s right, all that stuff about Valentine being arrested for marrying young couples, healing his jailer’s daughter or writing a note to his lover while in prison are just stories. Heck, these guys were priests, were they even allowed romantic connections? Maybe so back then.
Still with me? Good. Here comes the romantic stuff. In 1382, Chaucer wrote a poem called “Parlement of Foules” (Parliament of Fowls / Birds) in honor of the first anniversary of the engagement of Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia. The poem takes place on Valentines day and concerns a dreamer traveling through the temple of Venus and witnessing birds choosing their mates. Now here’s the odd thing – the treaty leading to the engagement above was signed on May 2nd and there’s yet another Valentine of Genoa who was celebrated on May 2nd. (One also has to consider birds don’t start making nests in February). But somewhere along the line, because this poem mentions Valentine’s Day, was written for an engagement and includes the goddess of love and a bunch of horny birds it’s thought of as the first use of Valentine’s Day (the 14th) in a romantic fashion.
Maters only get worse when on Valentines Day in 1400, a ‘High Court of Love’ was established in Paris based on the Medieval concepts and rituals of ‘courtly love’. These courts were actually social gatherings were people read poems, debated love and probably got all hot and bothered making eyes at each other.
The earliest valentine note (1415) is thought to be one by Charles, Duke of Orleans who was writing his wife while being held in the Tower of London (Maybe that’s where the Valentine legend comes from). The first mass-produced valentine notes/cards came out in 1847 and are attributed to Esther Howland, who was inspired by a valentine she’d received from Europe where the practice had been going on for some time. By 1849, writer Leigh Eric Schmidt noted Valentine’s Day had become a national “holyday”.
So there you have it, a holiday that has its roots in three dead guys, pagan festivals, a mistaken poetic reference and a bunch of Europeans with way to much time on their hands
(as have I, apparently). In any case, happy Valentine’s Day.
there were two priests who were named valentine. one married people despite emperor claudiuses ban on marriage. the other one helped christians escape prosecution. they were both hung on february 14th and proclaimed saints by the church.
I don’t love the holiday but I don’t hate it either. I’ve found it to be a good excuse to go out and spend money on my lovely bride, although I don’t need much of one even after 13 years. I always hated the day before that as it felt like it was pressured from large corperations like Hallmark to spend money and if I felt the need to show my love why would I save it for one day or two out of the year? Why not share my love when ever I felt it?
Because we were married on a Friday the 13th we tend to treat every Friday the 13th as our own special holiday and spend time just with ourselves.
I like it only when I have someone to celebrate it with, otherwise I just feel awful. Like now for example. I’m not enjoying Valentine’s Day because the guy I wish I were with isn’t with me. =( not cool. But hey, at least I didn’t waste money on a card. Ugh. I would’ve picked that over being alone though. Lol.
I don’t think it should be so overrated, basically. Why should you celebrate only one day out of the year and show that special person you love them. That’s something that should be done everyday.
It only rubs that you’re alone in some people’s faces. Like mines. My hubby’s deployed, so I have nothing! It sucks! God, it feels like everyone’s all in love and shoving it.
Not fun.
thanks , very interestng
I dread it but it’s a sweet holiday overall.
its ok =x
Valentine’s is a nice holiday if your taken.. if you are single it feels like the hold world of lovers is out to make you jealous. very good day though to make it a point that you love someone. its cute, and hallmark makes a lottttt of profit.
good to know!
even if both stories are a fluke they are very cute.
That’s an interesting bit of history! Thanks for the info!
He married people when it was illegal. Fo sheezy. Yay him. Yay marriage.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn’t like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn’t the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.
Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn’t going to support that law!
Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favorite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies — secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.
One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.
I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.
One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, “Love from your Valentine.”
I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh — because they know that love can’t be beaten!
Wow, i like the story about him falling in love with the jailer’s daughter.
Thanks mike!
GO CHRISTMAS
good
I didn’t know what Valentine means..
it’s aight but proably Christmas or Thanksgiving
I have always enjoyed Valentine’s Day! Especially since it’s also my birthday.
Woo another Christian holiday, this otta piss off the atheists
I’m neutral about the day..
but no one seems to think it’s important anymore, anyway. There’s no reason to do anything special for it, except celebrate the sales on chocolate and candy.
My favorite holiday is Christmas for sure; it brings family and friends together.
Why do we need a special day to say ‘I love you’. It is just another marketing racket playing on peoples insecurities. If your partner needs to wait a whole year for a card or gift to say what you think of him/her then there are some problems there which won’t be resolved so easily.
It’s great for many businesses, including restaurants, jewelers, florists, and massage therapy centers (where I work). As I’m not in a relationship right now, I’m not excited about it, but thankfully I’m not wistful/bitter/morose either. But I feel sorry for those who are made to feel sorry for themselves. It’s a good excuse to have chocolate!
I love Valentines Day, but Christmas steals first place. It is something about Christmas that changes people.
valentines day is a good excuse to stay in bed and fornicate ALL day… i suggest everyone partake
St. Valentine was a saint. A catholic–yeah, he didn’t have a love interest…or did he?
still no answer to ny question then. what is yahoo up to??
freedom of speech is dead!!
I hate it. I think the retail industry invented it to make money
I am not fond of it.
I have always like valentine’s day even as a child and giving all my friend’s a little card in there paper bags we would decorate in school. Then now it is still even more special to me because 25 years ago I gave birth to a son on that day. So that was the best gift I could have ever recieved and every year am reminded of how precious Valentine’s day really is to me. I bet he is happy I really didn’t name him Valentino Cupid…LOL
I could possibly love it if I was taken..
I think that if I had a boyfriend I’d like it but, then again there’s the whole ‘do you buy pressents for each other or not and if you do how much should it cost’ thing. This year it was on a weekend so there wasn’t much to it. If it’s on a weekday then it kinda rubs the “your single, and lonely, and have no present’ fact of life into my face.
I’m an athiest and many people in my area are EXTREMELY religiouse so it’s a pain to deal wih that, but I think it’s a cute holiday that gives some people that extra push to ask someone out.
I didn’t know such much until now!!!
i’ts probally cupid!
Okay so here’s the deal with Saint Valintine and Valentines day. Yes February 14th is the day St. Valentine was died, a little history lesson, he was beaten to death for helping christians escape from rome, in 200 something A.D.. And feb 15 was a day dedicated to Goddess Februata juna, a love lottery day, where men took names of eligible woman out of a urn to marry them . After the death of St. Valentine, the 2 days were made as one, in his honor and for all he had done.
Hate it. It’s all about marketing. Doing something spontaneous on any other day of the year will probably mean a whole lot more.
its another stupid day that the humanity have to deal with but me & my smart wife , we love each other everyday & we dont need no stupid st valentine to remind us of what we have. we have st.valentines years : Life . Thats how we see it .
Salam
i did not ask something wrong bec:i donot somebody to chat with
I hate it sooo much…its a stupid holiday to remind you how single and lonely you are! You don’t need a day “for love” you are supposed to love the people in your life everyday!
St Valentin is a celebration for all lovers, married people in all over the world, but unfortunately it’s also a day where Society singles you out for not being with a love one. I don’t mind about showing all the affection, but it doesn’t mean that one has to endure the pitiful sight of lucky ones(valentines).
And by the way I don’t believe that it should be a special day where one has to remember to be romantic to his/her lover. It’s a celebration, not an anniversary! Love should be shown every day, not only in one special occasion!
I absolutely hate it. Being born right after Valentine’s day, you never get presents. Everyone is broke. Even the single people. But also, I dont like it because in my opinion, you dont need a Valentine’s Day to remember that you love your special somebody. And why does it only have to be your lover? Could’nt you celebrate it with you Mama or Papa? Siblings? Dont tell me they’re not considred a ‘love one’, right? Do you just give gifts on a special day? Why cant you give a gift on any random day and say ‘Because I love you.’?
But still, there may be good qualities on Valentine’s Day. Sometimes it just gives some people courage to ask ‘that’ person out. And it’s nice to receive boxs of chocolate that will make you fat, but it reminds me of the above ^. Maybe I just havent found the significance of Valentine’s Day. But I still have a long way to go. Who knows what will happen later on…;D
ooooo.o ok
Well, I’m not sure anymore. I would hate it because I never got a chance to find a real girlfriend. But the Valentines would end up being my Mom and sister which is never a bad thing. This year, however, was different because we played Secret Valentine in the office where I work and I got a Valentine for the year.
I really do hate this holiday. I’m sixteen and have never had anything close to resembling a boyfriend, and Valentine’s Day is just the perfect day to rub it all in.
Oh, and this year, even though I didn’t have an actual boyfriend, I did have a “lover”, and I knew he was planning something special for me this year with my best friend. He and I broke things off two weeks before V-day because he was failing all his classes and has to focus on his schoolwork.
Yeah, I looooooove this holiday.
</3
st. valentine was a catholic saint that married soldiers when it was illegal for them to get married. st valentine was arrested many times. he actually married people through the window of his jail cell
i love Valentine’s Day.it’s my favorite holiday.
the first story, in which he was a priest, is the more traditional story. it IS rather ironic, because not only did he promote marriage, he promoted chastity, while the emperor was promoting free sex. when he was in prison, he would send letters of encouragement to young people, which is where the idea of sending a valentine comes from.
it’s a shame that valentines day has become the opposite of what it was originally intended as.
I hate the Holiday. MY wife and I refuse to sell it. It has become a trumped-up day in which the retail world has put into the heads of millions that if they do not but they “other” chocolate, flower and a little pink and red card, they do not love them.
If you cannot show your partner that you love them throughout the year, you are going to need a lot more than Feb 14th to make it up.
refuse to “celebrate” it
sorry
Oh dear…how about we just have LOVE day everyday???
Yea I like the holiday bekoz im such a romantic girl I luv to dress in sexy clothing cook dinner for my man half naked and set a cute table with candles and it doesnt mean you have to spend 100bux in a resturaunt you can always cook at home and decorate your own room….he only buyz me a cute teddy and some chocolates all i ended up buying wuz a sexy langarie from victoria secrets! isnt it great being a girl lol.
lol , irony alert
CUPID!!!!
I’m not really sure about how I feel about Valentine’s day…I was in a happy relationship last year but this year I’m still have trouble dealing with the breakup of said relationship…it was a little bit weird. Valentine’s day is to celebrate Love in all of its forms and I was with my parents, my teammates and my best friend this year-so it wasn’t awful. Just not great in the way I expected it to be.
Valentine’s Day Rocks! If you don’t like Valentines Day it is possibly because you are bitter that you do not have “that special someone” in your life. Valentines Day is about much more than this. Valentines Day is in its purest form, about nothing more than LOVE. The love of friends…the love of lovers…the love of animals…the love of life…and so much more. You might have deeper problems if you don’t believe in Valentines day, because that is to say that your also don’t believe in LOVE.
well i only like valentine’s day b/c during the week after
there is tons of discount chocolate. so me and my mom always go to Walgreen’s for the candy!
I hate Valentine’s Day. Which makes me loathe Hallmark. Aren’t their better ways to show your love than with chocolate ans five dollar cards?
I only like the cookies with pink frosting, but I can eat them whenever I want.
I’ve never really liked Valentine’s day. I usually get dumped a week before Valentines, only to find that my gf as already moved on by Valentine’s day.
Plus, I don’t need a holiday to tell me to take that special someone out, or maybe ask someone out. It’s a pointless holiday.
Spontaneity is so much better. Instead of having one day out of the 365 days in the year dedicated to making sure your partner is loved. Shouldn’t it be all the time?
I’m sorry, I don’t need a holiday to tell me how to feel.
Friday the 13th is my favorite day especially when my birthday lands on it :]
I don’t really care either way. It doesn’t make me all that sad. If anything, I’m more sad on Christmas or New Year’s Eve. To me, Valentine’s Day just seems like another reason to buy a useless piece of jewelry to prove how much you love your girlfriend (really, it’s all about girls.) But if you’re into that sort of thing, then go for it. I like to take that day as an opportunity to tell all my friends and family how much I love them.
Thanksgiving is by far my favorite holiday. Plus it’s one of the only holidays that is slightly more acceptable for my Jehovah’s Witness boyfriend to partake in.
I luv valentines day. Its soo much fun when u dont have a bf or a gf. Because for girls you can hang out and watch really sappy chick flicks. Andu can fall in love. Its soo cute<3
I really like Valentines day, a lot, it is my birthday!
I think it is just the single people who are making a huge deal about valentines day.
what is it with everyone hating on valentines day?? its fun, its cute, its just a day to pay specific attention to the people you love (love romantically, typically.. but i know people who share it with their close same-sex friends too if they’re not with anybody). its dumb that people over-think it… with the excuse of “you shouldnt need a holiday to express your love”…its not like that! how about… you should be spiritual everyday, not just christmas/easter, you should be thankful every day not just thanksgiving, be proud and patriotic not just on 4th of july… duh! everyone knows that but its the the whole purpose for a holiday… chill out. my boyfriend and i are always cute and romantic, etc. but valentines is just a specific day to pay extra attention to each other… i cant stand people who make a big deal and shove their nose up in the air about how theyre too good to follow any pagan or religious-related holidays. i dont see why anybody wouldnt want to celebrate it… even just a little bit
and even if they dont have a “date”…thats not the only people you can love. have fun.. its about cupid and chocolate and roses and kisses and love… who doesnt like that? just enjoy it people.
(:
I’m single, but I love it. It’s about all my favorite things! Angels, roses, hearts, chocolate, love/romance, the color pink (and red I guess). It’s just so cute
I get the best of both world,s,,Valentine,s day
is also my birthday.
I completely agree with this answer!
