What will you be doing on Inauguration Day?

This inauguration is undoubtedly a historic one, but let’s rewind for a moment. On Election Day, an impromptu election party materialized at my house. Friends called, then showed up with meat for the grill, drinks, and an enthusiasm that I have never seen paired with an election. (A Super Bowl, maybe. But an election?) Still, I’m always up for a party, so I just alerted one of the arriving guests that we were going to need more ice.

I’m sure that much of my zeal stems from the fact that many of my friends worked on President-elect Obama’s campaign. I found it extraordinary that a candidate could muster so much enthusiasm from a stereotypically marginalized and “apathetic” demographic (the 18-29 crowd). Part of it, I think, stems from the use of new media during the election. I was stunned to see that the candidates were posting on sites like YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, and were even podcasting! They also made the move to mobile media-have you seen the iPhone app?

Given all the new media, it’s not surprising that our new president-elect is hesitant to give up his BlackBerry. I’ve also heard rumors that he’ll be the first president to have a laptop in the Oval Office. But I’ve gotten ahead of myself-I was talking about the inauguration. I have friends who are lucky enough to be attending, despite the incredible rush on tickets! They’ve had to pass legislation to prohibit scalping tickets-is this an inauguration or a Radiohead concert?

The weather forecast for Tuesday is cloudy and chilly 34 degrees. Since 34 degrees Fahrenheit is officially 16 degrees below what I consider to be “really, really cold,” my plans for inauguration day include a “West Wing” marathon and having a group of our friends over to celebrate. We’ll be pulling out our Fourth of July decorations and getting our patriotic groove on. We’ll watch the (prerecorded) inauguration and pop some celebratory champagne. We’ll also have plenty of ice on hand this time.

What are your plans for Inauguration Day?

  2. Hey there.
My name is GiNA and I am a Junior in High School. Like most people, I have off the 19th for Martin Luther King day, but the following day I must go to school, for we start midterms. I understand that midterms are important and have to get done, but I find it a little unfair that on probably the most historic day of the year I will be sitting in school.

The good thins is we get out early (I want to say around 12:30ish) so hopefully I won’t miss too much.

If I do miss stuff, my dad is going to be DVR-ing it all. (Praise technology lol!!)

It would be nice to actually be right there looking at president elect Obama get sworn into office but I think I’m taking part in this historic moment no matter what even if it is through my tv screen. This inauguration day will be one to remember!

  29. Nothing at all. I think this has been the worst (and most racist) election ever. Most black people just want him to be the president because he is black,I do not support of this theory at all.In plus,he’s NOT BLACK.He is MIXED.Now,for all of you people out there that thought he was the right choice, and voted for him because you liked him the most (and no i dont mean that you like him because hes black!),well, lets hope your right for all our sakes.I am dillon,And this is my opinion.

  32. I’ll be tending jurey duty fortionatly, their will be plenty more messiah like treatment for Obama until his fame grows cold in about 6 months of screwing things up worse than they already are. I honestly do not see the big deal of “history” on this event. He is not the first black prez as he is half white but, of coarse, I’m a racist for pointing that out. All polotitions are = ‘ly worthless and Obama is no acception.

Haha. 34 degrees is not chilly at all. It always makes me laugh hearing people out on the east coast whining about their warm weather.

    Try -35 below.

  46. Unfortunately, I have to work. However, I work in a school and we will be watching the Inauguration on a movie screen in the cafeteria. I also plan to record it here at home. This is a historic event and I want to be able to pass it on to my future grandchildren.

I have never been very enthusiatic about any political event until now.

  47. Here’s the deal. I voted for our new President. I am happy with the “change”. But, I just don’t understand the hysteria surrounding this new administration. Here’s an idea for everyone. “Be careful what you wish for.” What we are going to have is Democratic President and BOTH houses of the US Congress with majority Democrats. Hmmm. If things go right, that’s wonderful. But, when things go wrong (which they often do in our world), the blame will be pointed primarily at one party…and man.

So I’ll actually be very busy that day. The day before – MLK Day, I actually have off and will quietly relax at home doing as little as possible :-)

  94. Well, since I am a First Grade teacher I will be at work. I have decided that I will be showing the swearing in and possibly even the inauguration address to my students. We will be writing about, “If I was president, I would…..” and doing some other fun stuff all with an american theme. Yes, my students are in First Grade but they are constantly debating and talking about Obama. I will get on the Obama wagon and support our new president. I want to be able to tell my great grand kids where and what I was doing when President-elect Barack Obama becomes president. I may even have to wear my Abraham Lincoln hat and beard since this whole inauguration is Lincoln themed. That is what I am doing on inauguration!

  119. Yeah, it’s a good idea to celebrate or watch it somewhere on the TV or staying near by the place it’s gonna be ;) . Just think, you can take part in a new historic stage of the country. It’s great! If only I could, I’d do that! I’d go to Washington, D.C., where it’s gonna take place, with a good bunch of friends of mine…But, unfortunately, being in another country makes it impossible. At least, I’ll turn the TV on.

  121. I have planned 1 thing and thats watching the Inauguration and probably have a nice and well prepared feast along with my family. I knew that someday a black person will become president but never though it would happen in my lifetime and i am 22 years old. When i first heard and seen as Obama has become the president elect my heart started racing with joy and excitement i couldnt believe we done it. I was so happy that this even will take place and i am willing to to watch it on live tv on HBO(ZONE). My family as well as so many others will be watching it with me and celebrating as long as we can.

Now the words that we gonna say is “YES WE CAN WE DID IT AND WE MADE CHANGE” This Inauguration will forever live in my heart and i hope that our 44th president will put our nation under god and bring peace to this world.

Hell if aliens from other worlds comes in 2010 probably our president will be the first to say “Welcome to earth” Ha ha its good to dream though.

God Bless The World And All Of Its Inhabitant.

Everyone I know has already ruined the guys’ reputation, and yours is the first real positive account. I think everyone simply thought that they were going to make more money per hour. (The business owners do not have to pay wage earners more than they themselves make…and Obama isn’t going to pay them out of his wages)…I can’t think everyone was thinking of our beloved economy. Our principal has made arrangements that every class 5th through 8th grade will have the benefit of large tv’s and big screens, breakfast for all the children to watch. Every teacher has a lesson plan that they will apply for their grade level and we will discuss and talk about the past, present and future.

Remember, Obama is not coming to Washington for entertainment purposes. He has a very important (and difficult) job to do. I pray he does it well.

People are acting like this is the second coming of Jesus or something. I am old enough to remember all of the inaugurations going back to Lyndon Johnson. I’ve never seen so much hype in my life. Swear the man into office and get on with it.

There are still a lot of bitter white people out there who feel that blacks (even the half-blacks like BO) should not be ahead of the game because they themselves are still stuck in some lost time. They can either get on the bus or get left behind. CAE, you are so bitter that you will be left behing because of your negativity. I will pray that your ignorance disappeards.

When i was out in utah guns and bullets were flying off the shelves when they found out obama was going to be in. Also he is so unqualified.
