Who is your favorite role model and why?

Tags: ,

No matter how confident and competent you are, everyone looks up to someone.  Even the greatest sports figures, politicians, and celebrities have someone they aspire to being like. President-elect Obama, a man not short on confidence who’s due to be sworn into the most powerful job in the world next week, said recently that every time he reads Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address he gets “intimidated.” In light of this and the new film “Role Models”, castmember Seann William Scott has a question for us all:

Who is your favorite role model and why?

You can see Seann putting his question to the Answers community in the video above. In fact, he’s even answered it himself. Scott explains…

“My greatest role model was my dad. I could give you a funny answer… although he was funny. I was lucky I had a great dad, he was kinda like Bill Murray and Chevy Chase: a superfunny guy. I was told some really great factory jokes.”

Watch the trailer on Yahoo! Video:

Role Models @ Yahoo! Video

So who is your favorite role model? A teacher or a superhero? Someone who inspired you or someone whom you aspire to be? Answer Seann’s question and let us know.

  1. Joenas Brothers, because they are amazing, and they have an amazing talent… their voices! Thats really inspired me to become a better singer and always follow my dreams.

  2. uhmm.. jonas brothers?… we are all doomed… hehehe

-Simon Bolivar. He was the only military who conquered a whole empire to give it to the people rejecting to take the power to himself. He is also one of the 10 biggest thinkers of human history. And he kicked spanish out of the south.
-Hugo Chávez. Well, to much lies around him, and the whole world media brainwashing people against him. He has united a whole continent (south america is a continent, not a sub-continent) in just ten years. He is (whether you like it or not) the recognized leader of the free world.
-Che Guevara. He was the grandson of the richest man in south america, and he was a graduated medician, but he refused to everything to go fighting for the oppresed. He liberated cuba, and went like a Quixote to free Africa by himself. He failed and went to Bolivia to free the only Indian country in the world, but there he was killed by Americans (U.S.)

I wouldnt say Obama… but would I prefer somebody who says Barack Obama than somebody that says George Bush..

And when I was younger, Tupac Shakur was my role model.

  4. Yeah I agree with Kaitlyn! The Jonas Brothers are great role models cuz they are so talented but they still are grounded. The Jonas family is very united and Godis very important for them and for me too.
I really admire them. Specially Nick Jonas, he is my role model cuz he’s been through a lot with his sickness but he never gives up! And he gives hope to all the people that has Diabetes or other disease.
He is a great example for everybody, he has proved that no matter what obstacles you have in your life, you cant let them slow you down, and follow your dreams
He is a great musician and an amazing person, and Im not saying this just cuz I have OJD, he really is an inspiration for me and he makes me want to be a better person everyday!!
And I aslo admire David Archuleta a lot! He is such a great role model! He has the voice of an angel and he seems to be a really nice person.

  5. Um…I would have to say Hugh Laurie. Probably because he is such a great actor and because of his great character on the hit TV show House. Also because that he has a great challenge of living in America with being English…not that’s bad or anything, but he has inspired me to not give up when I’m faced with a challenge. I also like his character in House. ^^

  9. Since just about everyone else is giving sucky role models like singers that just surfaced 2 days ago, mine is the Ant. They are very hard workers striving to please their queen, take care of their young and survive in this cruel, harsh world. They don’t give up and they’re not finished until the job is done, which is never. They can lift a lot more than what their body weight is and will help out one another when one is hurt. If I believed in reincarnation, I would want to be an Ant.

  13. haley williams is definitely my favorite role model. i’ve always wanted to be a rock star, but being a girl has made some obstacles. in the rock world, women are just the groupies who sleep with the band members. not many are actual performers, but haley sends a message that she rocks, she can keep her cool, and still be awesome all at the same time. go haley and paramore!

  16. Arne Næss, one of the greatest thinkers of modern time and a person who sadly recently diseased.
His philosophy will probably play a greater role in the years to come.

Nikola Tesla, the person who gave birth to the 21st century. A person who invented machines we are unable to recreate a century later is quite noteworthy.

  17. Bono and Hugh Laurie.

First, Hugh Laurie: The man is a millionaire for his work on House, but even with this success he is still a humble and down to earth man. He even goes as far as to say that he feels guilty that he makes so much money for being “a cheap imitation of my father”, a real life doctor.

Second, Bono: Another self-made man. After U2’s amazing success, instead of enjoying his amazing track record, Bono dedicated himself to helping the lives of others. The man is blind to politics; instead, he only sees people in need. The world needs more people like him: those who would help others no matter who they are or where they live.

Julian Casablancas because he is THE only lead singer out there who [hear me out] has a NATURAL sounding voice and sounds just c h i l l . He is also the main inspiration for me to be lead singer of my band instead of rhythm guitar–im glad i did too, bc our band is doin great!

  20. Jennifer Aniston, because she has been through a lot, with her divorce and instead of falling apart, she did yoga to keep herself together and she is positive and she makes me feel like even though you’ve been through hard times there is always hope that something better can happen. She motivates me to keep fit and loose those extra pounds that i wanted to loose and i love that she plays her role really well because i can kinda relate to her, her character. I just think that she is absolutely gorgeous and she is my role model

  27. Sarah Brightman and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

In a way, they’re not really role models, but more like two people who have unknowningly changed my life around for me.

I’m a 15 year old girl who when she was little, always wanted to be a pop star, ie. Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, you get the point.

The problem is, I can’t sing pop to save my life. I can’t hit the notes in my chest voice, I can’t write songs, and basically, I suck at it.

I’ve always been singing classically though, in choirs. I hated it, and basically, didn’t know that I was good at it.

A year ago, I watched the Phantom of the Opera in a class, and since I didn’t like Emmy Rossum all that much, I went online and youtubed Sarah Brightman singing the songs. After that, I watched every part of Phantom of the Opera, eventually graduating to all ALW songs, and then the entire classical genre.

I’m now in LOVE with classical music and musical theatre, things that I CAN do, and WILL succeed in. Teenagers are often confused on what they want to do when they’re older, and I was once like that.

Now I know exactly what I want, and I’m working hard to get there.

Thank you Sarah, Andrew, and all other people that I now look up to. (There’s a lot =D)

  45. Lupe Fiasco is my role model. As a teenager living in NY, hip-hop has become mainstream almost a decade ago and is being raped and plummeted by talentless, immoral rappers who we all agree rap about nonsense and stupid things, such as money, pimping, guns and you know the rest, but Lupe Fiasco is different. His wordplay is so amazing, lyrics are super and many don’t realize his talent, his abilities. His first album was extremely well done and earned him a grammy. His second album was a concept album that was excellent, almost flawless. Although Lupe says his mentor is Nas, I really believe in a way, Lupe outshines his mentor in some aspects and is probably the Tupac of this generation. He is on the road to becoming a legend. I recently suggested my English teacher to listen up on Lupe Fiasco and even he agrees Lupe Fiasco is one of, if not, the smartest MC out there right now. Throughout my childhood I’ve been abused, sent to foster care and faced depression but one thing that helps me is music. My music’s all that I got and I can’t go on a single day without listening to it.

Like her, I also hate that every line that makes sports clothes thinks that if they make it pink, girls will buy it.

Stupid girls who aren’t actual sports fans will buy it trying to impress a guy.

  48. My father. He was largely self-educated and pursued understanding, insight, and wisdom, without fear, all his life. He was gentle, open, gracious, and tolerant with everyone (stupid or not) – unless they offered harm to others. He never took personal offense, but when behavior threatened others, or in his view diminished humanity, he could be a very difficult and cunning opponent. He taught me how to help people “die on their own swords”. He was an honorable man, held in great respect by all who knew him, and he taught me that being honorable, honest, as wise as possible, and reliable was more important than the rotes of religions, or money. He believe that everything will yield to reason, goodwill, and mutual care – and how to live in a society in which most people ignore all three. And having idiosyncrasies of his own, he also taught me to have compassion for my own and others’.

Also, I would have to say Pink Floyd, because those people took such great emotion and turned it into beautiful music that makes me feel how they have. It inspires me to create music that means something to me and that isn’t too overly complicated, just a simple tune that expresses myself.

  63. Layne Staley is my role model. Here are my reasons. I LOVE writting.I one day dream of becoming a respected lyricist. Layne was a poet, and turned his poetry into songs. He inspires me in so many ways. Telling stories, past expirences, and wrote about how he suffered through his heroin abuse, hopeing that his fans would hear the meaning in his songs and not choose the path of drugs. I have MANY articles, videos, biographys, pictures and memorabilia of Layne and as well as the rest of the Alice in Chains band. Those who knew him best said that he was full of compasion, he was funny and obviously had such a great talent.Anne Wilson of Heart had even said Layne wore his soull on his sleeve. Well, he is truly missed by me, and all of his other fans, and will continue to live on in out hearts, and through his music. By the way, i loved reading what everyone else had to say about thier role models :)

  69. I’ve had many role models, but the ones who’ve made the most difference are..

-Cate Blanchett: She’s not only beautiful, she’s talented and smart. Not to mention nice. She’s was already one of my favorite actresses but after meeting her this past holiday season, I’ve grown to love her. She is a huge celebrity but is so humble and gracious as well as grounded. I would give ANYTHING to be the kind of person she is. She reminds me that we can all be a little nicer…even if we’re not one of the most famous people on the planet!

-Cindy Frey: She’s a young Belgian photographer who’s already made her mark on the world. She photographs bands from around the world, not to mention fashion and print ads. She’s gives more of herself in one roll of film than I do in a year. As an aspiring photographer, I look to her stylistic techniques and try to capture a little of her essence in the pictures I take. She’s a role model to us all.

  71. My role model would have to be Anne Frank. She was so positive during the time of war, and it didn’t matter what she and her family endured, she was always pulling herself and the people around through, trying to make them think positively, trying to encourage them to keep going. She always thought of others before herself and she kept on going until the day she died. After reading the book and watching the movie, it made me realise how much we take for granted these days. She inspired me to appreciate and love my life more. Anne Frank is my role model.

His vast knowledge of Eastern and Western culture as well as his deep spiritual insight, fervid eloquence, brilliant conversation, broad human sympathy, colourful personality, and handsome figure made an irresistible appeal to the many types of Americans who came in contact with him.

  74. My role model is actually a non-famous stranger. I saw one of his profiles on a social-networking website and started admiring him. He also owns a blog that he says he made for the purpose of touching people’s lives by simply sharing his. He’s a very mature person by his age that’s above two of mine. He’s a role model of self-esteem, style, love for oneself, and love for others. I admire this person a lot. If only heaven would be real, I’ll be glad to be one of his friends there. I wish…

  75. ok, get ready for the cheese factor….

My mom. Shes loved me even when I tried to convince her I didn’t love her. Shes put up with me through the crazy teen years, and now that I’m grown, has shown me how to be a great mom to my child. Being a single mom, as I am, can be hard. But with the lessons she has taught me and the example she has shown through the years, it makes it all so much easier. I love you mama!

  77. I’m sorry, but I’ve cringed at most of the answers, but that’s simply because everybody’s different. But Britney Spears? Xtina? Do we want this generation to turn into mental porn stars? The Jonas Brothers?! There really are no standards anymore…
    Ah welll.

My role model is SE Hinton. For those who don’t know, she’s the author of the Outsiders, among other books. She’s inspired me because she wrote the Outsiders at such a young age, and I am an aspiring young writer.

  80. My music teacher (coincidentally named Melody) is my role model because ever since she came to my school in September, she has believed in me and inspired me to follow my dreams. She is just so cool, and we all respect her.

Also, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez because they follows her dreams AND behaves themselves! Even though they are in the spotlight, they are very down-to-earth.

  81. Jonas Brothers – cuz not so many guys are proud to be virgin… and, they have amazing music, they show love to their fans and the have (are) an amazing family

Taylor Swift – super honest person. She is simply who she is and she never tried to be someone else.

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato – they are best friends. They know each other for a log time. They both work on their careers and still are best friends, still find time fot each other.

my cousin Anča – lol, she is just 8 but I love her. And… even if I am 9 years older, she is a little my role model. When she wants something, she get it – and she always make it in good way.

  88. My two greatest role models are:

Jesus Christ the Messiah, My Lord and Savior
    and Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

I believe in religious coexistence and for me. Jesus and Gandhi point the way.

I fall very short am making a life journey to follow the actions of Jesus and the words He spoke known by some as the “Red Letter” text of the Christian Holy Bible.

Gandhi’s pursuit of truth, his quest for peace through non-violent protest, his conviction to give up material possessions in order to evolve as a person with a Spirit that walks closer to God is a very admirable journey and similar to the example given to us by Jesus.

Supposedly a failure, on some influential people’s terms, he was a success by most people’s; he not only lived in grand style to the end, but left a body of work that is the inspiration and the envy of generations.

  101. I know who my role model is. It’s Judge Judy. I love how she conducts her life and her court room. She sees right through people who are trying to con her. She calls them on it all the time. Some people will try and con you and some people won’t call them on it. I like that about her. A lot of people try and bullsh*t her. And she catches them everytime!! Also I like her because of her values and morals in life. Just do the right thing. That is one of her sayings, and it’s true.

  104. my FAVORITE role model is and has been 4 awhile now is Seann William Scott (YOU!) because you are SEXY, FUNNY, and a GREAT actor in everything you play in. Not to mention, you are around my age, born in the same year :) You seem to be a real out going guy with ALOT of potential going for you, I would give ANYTHING for a chance to even meet you face to face. Your girlfriend, fiance or wife is a VERY LUCKY woman, I would actually give ANYTHING to trade places with her. I live in Escanaba, MI (Upper Michigan, in the Northern area), have you ever been in this area or near it other than Chicago, IL????

  107. I look up to Jesus Christ. He showed great compassion for the people of his day. He healed the sick, the lame, and the blind. Even when his twelve apostle were arguing amongst themselves, he never got angry with them. But He disciplined them in love. Telling them to forgive each others faults. Jesus imitated his father in heaven. He is someone I want to be like very much. Especially today in this World that we live in. Jesus and his father are also trust worthy, unlike some people out there who are in the media. As a role model for all of us today, he even gave his life willingly for mans sins. I don’t know if any other leader could do that. That’s for this great question!

  108. No one; everyone I looked up to either got into drugs or did something foolish. But if I had to pick someone, I would pick my dad. I ♥ him soooo much! He’s my hero.

  109. Ok, well I’ll add to what I said earlier, which was Patrick Stump. I would pick him because he’s an extremely talented artist and an honest, humble, wise, and funny guy. If I could pick more than one I would pick all the guys in Fall Out Boy because they each have great qualities that I would love in a role model. But for the sake of picking one, I would say Patrick. Also I think Angelina Jolie is an incredible person as well. She strikes me as an strong, intelligent, loving, and talented person. Easily another role model.

As far as a role model I would pick that isn’t fairly well known, I would pick my mother and/or my grandmother. My grandmother was such an unbelieveably giving person, and my mother certainly takes after her. They are both strong women who were put through a lot. They have too many amazing qualities to list here. Basically, if I could be half of what they are/were I would be incredibly happy with my life.

  110. I would say Tiger Woods because he is sooooo mentally tough and he doesnt let any set back ruin his confidence, like if he hits a bad shot then he will try to take that kind of shot again just so he can hit it right. Mental toughness is something you cant teach and Tiger has to be the most mentally strong individual in Sports.

  111. Marianne Faithfull. because she wasn’t perfect all her life. she got into some bad habits and almost ruined her life, BUT she picked herself up from rock bottom and started fresh and anybody who can do that is an inspiration to me.

Also, Eva Peron. because what she achieved for her people in her short life was nothing short of spectacular.

  113. Chet Atkins, commonly referred to as “Mr. Guitar,” had been my mentor through the years. I felt inspired to play guitar as he had done through the years, but eventually learned that there is only one Chet Atkins and only one of me.

Invariably, I decided to hone in on my own delivery and style–using many of Chet Atkins’s smooth methods.

At his passing on 30 June 2001 I deeply mourned the loss of perhaps the greatest guitarist that had ever lived–along with many guitar greats and singers in Nashville and beyond.

he has a very positive attitude and outlook on life which he trys to get through to the fans,
it means alot to me that he does this because im naturally a pessimist, and i read an interview where he said, kids think that theyre no good but we need to change that…

its nice to sort of have someone who relates.
he also wrote some of the only music i dont suck at playing on guitar.

  116. That would definitely have to be my mom. She was one incredible lady. My dad was an alcoholic and wasn’t around much. My mom single-handedly raised my two brothers & me. Oftentimes she worked 2 jobs just to put food on the table. She was incredibly strong, and had a heart as big as all outdoors. She died 4 years ago after suffering a stroke, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss her & wish I could talk to her.
