  6. I hope this ‘planned maintenance’ fixes, among other things, the fact that about July 2008 through Oct. 2008 your yahoo answers system would *not* accumulate ‘points’ for logging in every day, even though ‘remember me’ was unchecked and I logged out every time and tried it from more than one pc.

  8. The process of “maintenance” is a bit mysterious. We would love to have someone explain what is being done and what is being found. At 6am on Nov 18th, 1,000 questions appeared in the Business and Finance category. All dated 2-4 months ago. And they showed up at the end of the Open Questions. Were these the ones that people were saying had “disappeared” in July? Members were saying that using a % sign in your question would cause your question to “disappear”. Well, that obviously wasn’t true. But the questions really did disappear as soon as the Asker hit Submit. But some of these questions have answers and some don’t. It is an intriguing mystery. Where were they for 4 months? Why did they show up at the last pages of the Open Questions (i know they are dated 4 months ago but they could have gone to the front of the Home Page). Maybe we will never know. But someday someone from Yahoo Answers will talk to the Wall Street Journal and tell the world what was going on behind the scenes. People (us) love to know insider secrets. Won’t you tell us?

  9. Exactly what is being updated on Yahoo Answers?
I’ve seen no changes except for these announcements that Answers will be under going repairs for the last few days.

Will the Top 10 finally be updated? Will the Report button finally be removed from the hands of “Trolls”?

    Just thought I ask……

  15. Thank you for letting us know. Also, want to let you know that there are issues still with resolved questions showing in the sections of questions that are open for answers. Also, some of the questions that are showing are ones from a month or more.

Finally, there are some questions that can’t be opened up when you try to click on them and end up with an error message of 404. Some of them are questions that may be open for 2 hours or more.

  17. OMFG!! I’m bracing myself for tons of glitches as usual. I will ride it out though and not over load your staff with complaints. (my hubby does programming for a living and works at home, I see and appericate your teams efforts first hand answers team) PLC5 PLC2 C++ etc. blah blah blah. *sigh*
I feel compelled to add a stupid request if any Y/A team people actually read any of these comments.
I had a large number of fans and did not want anymore, However when I changed my profile all my fans, well, um vanished. I didn’t want them to go, yet I didn’t want anymore fans at that time.
If it is possible to, uhh “tweek” the allow fans to add me setting I’m sure lots of people/users woud like that.

    If anybody actually reads this.
    Thank you very much.

Folks at Yahoo, have you not noticed that most people who comment are upset?

Try doing what you say you’re gonna do and actually be accessible. You people terminate accounts indiscriminately and ignore appeals.

  49. Apparently, some people think “maintenance” means “software changes I desperately want”. It could more easily mean that Yahoo is adding cable backbones or physically moving servers. Get a grip, people. It’s just the net. Your life won’t end because you can’t answer inane questions for a couple of hours or get the changes you want. Sheesh.

  60. Wow! There sure is a lot of hostility here.
Yahoo provides a FREE service, and when they do maintenance and try to fix or repair problems to IMPROVE the FREE service people complain.
    …I don’t get it.
Is it really that much of an inconvenience?
If so; maybe y’all should reconsider the priorities in your lives.

Comment posted on November 21st, 2008 at 1:11 am by Lee
  62. How many “Coffee Breaks” are you guys going to take? On top of your seemingly endless “scheduled down time”, your website also frequently experiences glitches which, instead of showing up as proper error pages where a user can report the problem to your so-called ’staff’, also show up as “Coffee Break” messages. And before anyone gets all huffy about how “They’re providing a service for free!”, keep in mind that Yahoo makes thousands off of banner ads and paid e-mail accounts — the least they could do is fix their damn error pages or, better yet, fix the bugs in the system. I know these little “scheduled downtimes” aren’t doing anything to help, since this has been going on for months.

Google surpassed you jackasses in the race for net dominance for a reason — they actually understand the importance of pleasing not only their paying customers, but also the ones who utilize their free services. I’d buy a Google product in a heartbeat… but never anything from Yahoo.

Fix your damn glitches already, you incompetent morons.

  78. Maintenance:
    1) The act of maintaining or the state of being maintained.
    2) The work of keeping something in proper condition; upkeep.

With the big “old questions are back” error that was introduced the other day “repair” is needed, rather than mere maintenance.

Adam begat Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuslah, Lamech, Noah, Shem, Arphaxyd, Shelah, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor, Terah, Abraham, Issac, Jacob also called (Israel), his sons were the 12 tribes>(Judah, Gad, Benjamin, Reubin, Asher, Napthali, Dan, Simeon, Issacher, Zebulun) + Ephraim and Manessah were Joseph’s two sons they each had property.. Levi’s tribe were priests and thus could not own land..
Judah>(jews)phares, esran, aaran, amenidbah, naasson, salimon, boaz, obed, jessie, david, solomon, roboam, eleazor, matthea, jacob, joseph, jesus>12 apostles>andrew, bartholomew, james elder, james younger, john, judas, matthew, phillip, simon/peter, simon/canaanite, thaddeus, and thomas.
The question had to do with the bible obviously. List genealogy from Adam to Jesus and the 12 tribes and apostles.
I recalled most of these in order from memory. Problem is there are two different trees in N/T and they are not exactly the same. But this one will do. It is the longer of the two. g~nite

  109. Why can’t you (ideally) provide the exact time of the start of the shut-down for all 24 time zones around the world? That really shouldn’t be that big a burden for the Yahoo staff; however the *omission* of this information obviously creates a significant burden and a large amount of confusion for many of the users of Yahoo Answers in the various and sundry countries and time zones where they reside! Could you not *at least* provide the time in a UMT reference format?

  110. Does it really matter that much to our lives if yahoo have to update things, everything needs updating, and relifting, is it such a deal, that our lives won’t be able to function?? Probably not

  112. What is the point of all these maintenences if you don’t fix anything?! For pete’s sake you guys can’t even fix the littlest of problems. And why must you pick friday of all days to do this? Ugh.

  113. :| just when I had a really important question to ask. i bet alot of people around the world need help from the Answers community now. this ‘maintenance’ thing better be productive. lol.

  114. They pick the only real free time I have to do there updating. It’s almost 6:00 AM Eastern time. Which is 3:00 AM Pacific time. Obviously they don’t consider any one in a different time zone to be of any signifigance.

  120. I certainly hope YA does something about the hired outsiders who patrol Automobile insurance and registration to leave their “get an insurance quote here” sites. These people are obviously being paid for each time they post a link to their website. it is beginning to be absolutley clogged with these postings. Since when was YA a place to advertise ? Fix it or lose an entire category

  127. i don’t work for yahoo but i know this,

I think every one here should make sure there times on there clock/watchs are not wrong and think about a few things. Like yahoo answers and anyother part of this website that is being updated.

1st thing people should think about is,

Why sit at you computer saying bad things about yahoo.com, yahoo answers, and any part of the yahoo website.

The people that work for yahoo or any other internet services sometimes have to work all day from like 5:00 am and get down past 12:00 am becasue thing come up or they get home at night eat dinner then about to get some sleep and they get a phone call and have go back into there work.sometimes there a sleep at get call to fix problems…

Not every that works for yahoo is there because they only work there for the money. some people work for the money and because they want make yahoo one of the nicest websites there to keep other people happy…

    2cd thing,

How would you fell if someone was working as hard as they could and people said to them that they didn’t think that yahoo cared about them or any thing so they started doing updates to help and the website a better place…

3rd the more you wait for yahoo answers to come back online after the updates the it will takes because you wait your mind make it seem to take for ever because get bored other something if don’t got anything else you like to do the yahoo website why try going a very nice gaming website like runescape, other somethings there people 18 and older playing the games on websites and there are even people 18 and under…

    My internet services is comcast,

I may have only free email account here and pay for a yahoo website domain but i know think about a lot of internet services like why work hard and more…

I have used 3 websites before that internets services i have been to the follow websites,

i have comcast, msn, and yahoo they are all very nice i use i only have 1 windows live account at msn.com for the windows messager only. then every account I have clost/deleted on msn.com.

then my other acccounts are yahoo which for emails domains, yahoo 360 blogs and yahoo answers.

then i have the other accounts at comcast which are used for email only.

one my main points to calm down,

go to others website and come here later side if you need and a walk come back here later when it work or do something on this website.
