Which movies bring back your best memories?

I love a good movie. Actually, that’s entirely untrue. I love a whole bunch of horrendous movies. The “good” part is how they make me feel. The same way that smells bring back memories, movies that I’ve watched obsessively during specific periods of my life make me feel that age again. It’s completely uncanny. (I guess they’re called “feel-good” movies for a reason, right?) The “Ghostbusters” movies remind me of being a little kid-pretending (with my baby brother) that we were wearing proton packs, busting ghosts, and wisecracking. Even now, we can’t resist the urge to say the lines along with the movie, or answer the question, “Who ya gonna call?”

Grease” takes me back to middle school: sleepovers and singalongs with my friends and eating enough pizza that-in retrospect-my parents should have invested in Pizza Hut stock. It really highlights all the best parts (and feelings) of being a tween, without any of the unpleasantness that goes with the beginnings of adolescence. Both “Grease” and “Batman Forever” cause a crazy regression that leads me into uncontrollable fits of giggles-the trademark teenage-girl experience.

Our family has “tradition” movies-movies we watch to get in the holiday spirit. Halloween isn’t Halloween without a showing of “Hocus Pocus,” and Christmas Eve wouldn’t be the same without “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” We like to gather together, queue up the movie and-once everyone has gotten comfortable-enjoy the fun all over again.

A few months back, my brother and I were cleaning out our parents’ garage. We cleared out what felt like a million VHS tapes. I made a mental note to pick up some of these family classics the next time I was out buying DVDs. Because I occasionally forget my own whims, my brother has given me our favorite childhood-and-adolescence movies on DVD for the last dozen gift-giving occasions. We rip open the (often annoyingly secure) cellophane wrap and turn back the hands of time for a few hours.

Which movies stir up your nostalgic side?

  1. The best feel good film for me was seeing ‘school of rock’ at my best friends 14th birthday party – we kept playing the same bits over until we knew the words and then try and re-enacted the entire thing later on – good times!!

  2. i agree with the hocus pocus comment! not halloween without it. that being said, it wouldn’t be christmas for me without home alone 1 and 2. Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory has a special place in my heart (the original). Dirty Dancing and Ghost are also up there!

  4. I agree. I love the original Goodbye Mr. Chips. :) It just stirs my soul…. I also enjoy Random Harvest, Pride and Prejudice, True Grit, even Young Frankenstein. There are a lot of Betty Davis movies I enjoy as well, Now Voyager for one. These movies incorporate humor and a light hearted way to interpret life which I’m all for. I just really enjoy them and never tire of them.
    Thanks for the post. :)

  8. I love the movie Goonies. It takes me back to my childhood where adventure was around every corner and the thought of going on a treasure hunt was exciting. I asked myself why adults never went on treasure hunts.

  16. Either a few days before or after Christmas I went to the cinema with my soon to be auntie, uncle and Mum to see I Am Legend. I’m not 15 and it was the first 15 I was tried to get into. In the movie my auntie kept grabbing my hand and screaming at bits.

  17. Mine would have to include The Sound of Music, The Lion King, and Mary Poppins, and they’re my pick me up films to this day, with the addition of another quirky Julie Andrews musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie.

  20. I start bawling at the opening credits of Forrest Gump and I don’t stop till the ending ones. I just remember watching that movie with my parents and enjoying it so much, especially when my mother was alive… It just reminds me of a stable point in my life where I didn’t have a worry in the world, or at least any that truly mattered. I guess you realize that as life goes on…

My little brother just bought me Monster Squad on DVD a few days ago and it made my night. I haven’t seen that movie in years but i was obsessed with it when I was a kid. Now that my brothers and I are all in our 20′s, when we watch it is so much fun and full of 80′s nostalgia, and monsters :)

  23. Last Picture Show, a mature movie about high schoolers graduating from a small Texas town during the Korean War brought back memories because I went to school with people like most of the characters. I did not even have to change some of the names to recognize my friends. Pat Garret and Billy the Kid is my favorite Western, with Wild Bunch a close second. Blade Runner, a science fiction movie about a man who meets his maker and kills him is great, and Last Man on Earth and the remake, Omega Man are sci-fi films with strong religious undertones that are entertaining and stimulating. Got to mention the original Frankenstein/Dracula/Wolfman movies simply because they are terrifying without the gore. Finally, Escape From New York is an okay movie, but reminds me of the girl I took to it thirty years ago. Wonder what she thinks of when she sees it.

  27. For me, I’d say Titanic. My family and I went an saw it on Christmas Eve when it came out in theaters. It just brings back memories of when times were much more simple.

And for child hood memories, I’d say the Labyrinth with Sarah Connelly and David Bowie. “Dance magic, dance!”

  29. This goes the same for me, I wouldn’t like to go on with Christmas without watching ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ in which every line still stays as funny as the first time you saw it. Or ‘A Christmas Story’ a total classic that makes me want to have grown up in the forties.
I can’t forget the movies that me and my brother used to watch constantly as kids like ‘Death Becomes Her’, watching it not too long ago, I was surprised to see that I could recite most lines in sync with the movie.

  32. Of course Christmas movies have been watched dozens of times. We have a ritual. As the holidays season begins we watch movies associated with the day. Thanksgiving, we watch “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” as well as “Home for the Holidays” where Christmas brings up a marathon with “Scrooged”, Nightmare Before Christmas”, “It’s A Wonderful Life”, “A Christmas Story” (Personal Favorite),”Trapped in Paradise and a few others.

I also like watching movies that my brother and I watched as kids, like “The Man Whos Shot Liberty Valance”, Mr. Roberts”, “Blazing Saddles” or those that he turned me on to, liked “Fear of a Black Hat” and “Near Dark”.

If the movie is not nostalgic in content, I do tend to remember who I was with the first time I saw it and it really does bring back memories.

  48. The movie with the most memories for me is the 1999 remake of “The Haunting.” It brings back warm fuzzy memories of Christmas. You’re probably thinking what most people think when I say that: “WHAT?” No, I’m not just that bizarre. The story is, I was living on my own for the first time, had my first apartment, and I was getting ready to celebrate my first Christmas in my own place. It was very exciting. I was out shopping the day before I followed the family tradition of decorating and eating Mom’s homemade cookies, and stopped by the video store. I decided to get myself an early Christmas present of a new movie. “The Haunting” had come out recently and I missed it in theatres, so I wound up watching it while decorating my little tree in the new apartment. So, for me “The Haunting” will always be associated with Christmas, independence, and a ‘coming of age.’

  49. I always love The Goonies, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Labyrinth, Titanic, The Sandlot, Huck Finn, Lucas, Heathers, Gleaming the Cube, Kuffs (which round out three good Christian Slater movies…) of course Clueless, ALL of the Back to the Future movies, The Wedding Singer, Empire Records, Dumb and Dumber, Angus, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Schindler’s List, Edward Sissorhands, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure AND Bogus Journey, Groundhog Day, Toy Story… I could go on. I think that if you are reading this list I have and haven’t seen all the movies you NEED to get to the rental store and put them on your must watch list! :o )

After those, I fell in love too with, Sleepless in Seattle, Nothing Hill, You’ve got mail, While you were sleeping, the Mask of Zorro and so many others. I love to watch them still from to time, they make me feel good and make me laugh too. These are very relaxing movies, sometimes you may want to watch it too.

  55. Being a child of the 80′s, I beleive the best movies were made in this era with the likes of Back To The Future, E.T, The Goonies, Edward Scissorhands, The Neverending Story, etc.

Theres a distinct feeling of euphoria when I remember watching them as a child, but too bad those feelings don’t reciprocate if I watch them today since modern-day television has advanced in leaps to a point where those old movies seem low-budget. However, the memories will always be in my head..

It has an all star cast (brooke shields, the smothers brothers, Peter Boyle, John Schneider, and John Candy to name a few.) it’s so cheezy but it starts out with a lamborgini skipping over a pond like a rock. 63. Yes! Goonies, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Flight of the Navigator, and A Christmas Story are all right up there at the top of my feel-good list.

Some of them bring back memories of being huddled under the blankets in the back seat of the car at the drive-in with a big paper sack of homemade popcorn and a thermos of hot cocoa that my grandmother made, and trying to stay awake for the R-rated second feature without getting caught.

I’ve also got some new feel-good favorites like Carnival of Souls (the original), Prince of Space (a truly cheesy splice of a bunch of Japanese adventure clips from the 50s), and The Brain that Wouldn’t Die. Basically, these are all late-Saturday-night not-so-classics that my husband and I watch with a big bowl of homemade popcorn. Guess I’m still staying up for the second feature :-)

Makes me think of my childhoob and spending time with friends watching that movie. Another one is Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton. And Kung Pow Enter the Fist. That movie is so dumb its funny. It makes me think of the times working at the EMS station with friends on those long 24 hour shifts and watching movies to help kill the time between calls.

  72. I will never forget how “Imitation of Life” made me feel. This was a black and white movie made during an era when black people were often forgotton about in movie roles, other than maids, servants and waiters. It was such an important role that the lead character was not even black, but had to play a part in which she had to dig deep into her soul to know what it must have felt like to be a product of mixed parentage. This story had so much depth and truth and stereotype, but it was real to me. I also remember movies that featured the late actress Barbara Stanwick…westerns – she was the best. Last, but not least, I loved “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”, and any movie that featured Olivia DeHavilland, Bette Davis and many of the actresses from the black and white era. Those to me were the best movies of all.

Also, though it’s cliche, I am still touched by “It’s a Wonderful Life” at Christmas. And for different reasons, the Exorcist at Halloween.

  78. yes the truffle shuffle from the goonies will forever be embedded into my heart, my sister and i watched this movie at least 30 times. Also grease 2 even thogh we liked grease, grease 2 had the cool songs with pfeifer just brings back the good memories and there isnt a time that i see these movies in the video store that i dont want to rent them but i do not anymore. As for some of our other favs we laughed till the cows came home when young clark kent was racing the train and jumped over the tracks just missing getting hit in the origional superman movie.
THe Toy with richard pryor was another of our favs. Brewsters millions, eddie and the cruisers, the thing, and jaws cant forget that 1. theres just soo many and i might have to rent some tonight now that im getting into this. they just dont make them like they used to. or maybe everyone feels that way.

  79. I would have to say that my feel good movie is ‘You’ve Got Mail’ with Tom Hanks, and Meg Ryan. That movie is just absolutely wonderful. And having visited NYC for the first time this month, it renewed my love for it :)

  81. It’s definately “Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind”. I’ ve seen it with my Godmother (aunt) down to the former Hoyt’s Cinema Center in Waterville, Maine. That’s what inspired me in my love & fascination to almost EVERY Sci-Fi film in the past 30 years. Even some classic ones are just as good. In fact, it also gave me interests to the mysterious UFO Phenomenom & some real close encounters of beings from other worlds. THE BEST FILM EVER!!!!

  84. It’s not exactly a movie, but watching reruns of the original Star Trek series brings back those happy feelings… my siblings and I are all adults, but when we get together we still like to all get on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn and put in some Star Trek.

Plus, we always watched the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving thing on videotape on Halloween to start off the ‘holiday’ season, then after thanksgiving dinner we’d kick off Christmas season by watching the Charlie Brown Christmas thing.

  85. Movies bring you back to a time in your lfe and the feeling you had associated at that time, sort of like music. I love Wizard of Oz, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Nat’l Lampoons Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 24th St (the original), Scrooge (Alistair Sims), It’s a Wonderful Life, etc., Coming to America, 50 1ST Dates, Rat Race are just some of them. It’s all nostalgic and we all want to return to those warm, fuzzy times.

  87. Top Gun. At the time I thought I wanted to join the Navy or be a pilot and the movie came out at just the right time. Plus Tom Cruise was young and normal back then. The humor was great as was the romance. Remember the bar scene? And the ending? Just perfect – it all turned out right in the end. When it came out on videotape I must have watched it everyday once a day for a month straight!

  88. “Hollywood Knights” tops my list. It was my time. It brings back those uncaring days before Vietnam. Everytime I see a leather jacket or a ’57 Chevy lovingly restored, I get nostalgic. I had a lot of concerns back then, but I had hope also. I could glimpse a light at the end of the tunnel even if it did flicker a lot. The lightheartedness of the flick reminds me of the innocent fun we had back then.
“Goonies” was a joy to me. It held out the promise that if you just make the most of your time, treasure maybe just around the bend and more than you expect.

  90. Here is a really weird feel-good movie: “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.”

Watch the prequels and you’ll see why this action flick is actually a cool family movie, barring some questionable dialogue.

  91. There are two movies my cousins taped off of the Disney channel years ago and we always watched them almost everytime I went over there, Heavy Weights and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

Also Hocus Pocus, Rookie of the Year, The Memphis Belle, Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and The Lion King were all movies my family watched when I was younger, I’m almost seventeen now and I miss being so little and carefree.

These bring back wonderful memories of my childhood, when you only had the opportunity to watch these moveis once a year! My family would all snuggle together, eat popcorn and drink warm cider together, what memories!

  98. One of the first movie memories I have is going to see Bambi with Dad and my sister, but there are many other movies that I have seen since then that bring forth warm thoughts or special feelings.

Some of my faves are Peter Pan (love it), Goonies, Grease (and Grease 2 even though alot of people don’t admit to liking it too), Pretty In Pink, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Sabrina (with Audrey Hepburn), Miracle on 34th Street and Splendor in the Grass (with Natalie Wood)Labyrinth (love Ludo), Dirty Dancing (because I was a blossoming teen at the time I saw it and “Nobody puts Baby in a corner”), Nightmare Before Christmas, Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Breakfast Club, St Elmo’s Fire, Short Circuit (“Number 5 alive!”) and that is just to name a few.

  99. Buckaroo Banzai, Across the 8th Dimension.

This movie came at a time when I was deciding what I wanted to do with my life… which was everything. Who can tell me now jack of all trades is master of none? Buckaroo could do it all, don’t tell me we need to specialize.

  104. The old Pippi Longstocking movies made in the ’70s in Sweden and then later dubbed in English are what do it for me. They’re SOOOOOO horrible, but my sister and I loved them when we were young, and I continue to be hooked. I rented a couple of them recently and almost couldn’t stand how bad one of them was. Maybe I have outgrown them after all…better not watch them anymore, I don’t want a cherished childhood memory to be ruined by my critical adult eye!

  113. I have a few.

Star Wars II because when my little brother Andrew was a baby I was the first person to watch Star Wars with him and this was the one we watched.

Star Wars III because when my youngest brother Timothy was a baby a friend of mine gave me a pirated copy of Revenge of the Sith and I was the first person to introduce Timothy to Star Wars. I taught him the names of all the best characters, even now when I watch Epi. 3 I can hear him saying R2 and An-a-keeeen in his little voice.

Stealth- This is the last movie I watched with two of my best friends before they moved to TX. I love the movie but I’ve only watched it that one time because I don’t want to replace the memories I have of that night.

Any girl blossoming into adulthood can relate to this movie and as for the boys I’m sure “The Sandlot” brings up some good memories as well. I can watch them over and over again.
