What warms your heart about fall?

Fall is my favorite time of year. The weather cools down a bit, and if you live in an area with actual changes in weather, the leaves are turning beautiful shades of brown and gold. I’ve mentioned before that I’m an obsessive knitter, and in the fall I remember all those huge projects that I squirreled away. I go on an annual project-finishing binge, resulting in completed wooly garments to keep me cozy in cold weather.
I’m also a big fan of fall foods. I pull out my cookbooks and experiment with different soup recipes. Some are successes, some are spectacular failures, but they all at the very least warm the house up and give it that fantastic “someone’s-been-cooking” aroma. (As a side note, last year’s winning soups were the chicken soup with a zing – the zing being jalapeno, ginger, and garlic – and a gluten-free beer cheddar soup.) On the subject of seasonal foods, I love pumpkin lattes, muffins, and pie. What is it about the gourd family served sweet that makes it so irresistible?
Speaking of gourds, driving around town and seeing all of those pumpkin patches leads me to the high point of fall in our house: Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday, and I love going almost too far with decorations, costumes, and candy. Whether we’re setting up our entryway as a dungeon, crime scene, or scaffolding complete with a guillotine, the neighborhood kids get a kick out of the décor. They come for the gore, but they tell their friends about the full-sized candy bars.
We try to do fun, creative costumes, and it’s sometime challenging to gauge whether a costume will be weather-appropriate, given the fickle nature of fall weather. Let’s face it: No matter how awesome a couple’s costumes might be, the most convincing Captain Kirk costume won’t keep his Orion slave girl warm on a chilly Halloween.

I love the smells of autumn. The spices, the smell of soups and roasts cooking, bread baking.
~sigh~ Brings me back to simpler times as a little girl at Gramma’s house.
the weather is nice, but not too hot. thanksgiving and halloween
I love the crisp cold in the air. It’s a relief to the hot summer months. It’s not so hot and not so cold, and there’s not alot of precipitation.
the changing of the leaves
Fall reminds me of Norman Rockwell– or Leave It to Beaver. You know, the picket fences, the falling gold leaves– the smells of baking. It reminds me of family. It reminds me how I need to continue those traditions and good feelings onto my own children; rather than living the fast-paced life of not having time to appreciate those things.
Lubricant
i just walked in from parking my car on the street. There are kids out there SO excited about making piles of leaves to jump in. That is freakin cool!!
i love when the clouds start rolling in and theres a nice crisp breeze in the air
FOOTBALL!! FOOTBALL !! FOOTBALL!!
I love the beautiful colors that make you take notice because they’ll be gone soon. I love being able to wear sweaters and enjoy a warm house. I love whipping out favorite recipes and cooking for friends and family (we seem to enjoy eating more at this time of year too). Smells are more nostalgic (candles, cooking, outdoors, snow -even if it hasn’t fallen yet).
Pumpkins and Mums excite me
I just love the warm fuzzy feeling I get when i spend extra time with family. The sun sets early, which means we all come inside a little earlier and just spend time together.
The smells and the colors, gosh i just love fall.
Taking a drunken hayride with the lady.
I love the chilly weather! Taking walks with my fiance’ and looking at the leaves. Actually using my coffee mugs to make hot drinks and cuddle up at night for a cozy night in. Thinking about the holidays coming up soon with family. Going to a friday night high school alumni football game. I love every season for it’s uniqueness! I also look foreward to the snow flurries that will come later!
The colors of the leaves and the temperature drop are what really make me appreciate the fall season. I love the smells also when the season is just about to change. The colors of the leaves on the trees make you want to sit below one for hours staring at its mysterious complexity.
I LOVE FALL 2!!!!The smells the crisp air the colors I know most people get S.A.D. but me fall & winter something about it just warms my heart & fills me w/ hope
The pumpkin patch. Every age loves them. I love the old farms with real family people. Hayrides feeding some farm animals. Everyone picking their favorite pumpkin and the colors of the season make the pictures fantastic.
The red, orange, and gold fall leaves. The crisp clear autumn days that are warm, but not too hot like summer days. All new episodes of my favourite TV shows. Hot foods and baking cookies etc. that I don’t do in summer. Gathering of the clan, which tends to scatter in summer.
yea all that maybe true but it’s also time to pay those damn high heating bills that sucks don’t you think?
I love the crisp, smoky scent of autumn. The cooler weather and the changing colors of the leaves. It just makes me happy. Oh and hot cider, can’t forget the cider. The real stuff from the local orchards.
Autumm is my favorite season & most frequent them in my poems…
AUTUMN BIRDS
Heading home, toward the sun;
its long drawn-in breath of twilight,
sucking the last gasps of birds
toward its mouth,
I glimpse a flock of sparrows,
gathered up in squalls
to forage the last bruised fruits of summer,
and know winter is approaching.
Waves of starlings and ocean spray
sparrows,
splashing across the sky,
gust like the rib of a wind sock,
a white sheet falling
upon winged chairs,
saying time has come to head South.
Seeking comfort among circles,
when the weather turns
and daylight dwindles,
they gather at dusk,
With cropped wings, bank the air
then swoop down to roost
like the evening’s frost
condensing on the trees.
It is the ebb of Summer, its last glimmer;
The sweeping undertow of geese
carrying shells
disappear in the dusk
and are swallowed by the sun, like a river,
drowning every echo from our mouths.

I love fall probably the most because its close to winter.
I love the changing of the leaves and the smell of goods being baked in the oven and thanksgiving. I LOVE Thanksgiving probably because I love to eat my Grandma’s Sweet Potato’s with marshmallows on top! Yummy!
I hate the fall when your in the north, because i hate the cold and anything that reminds me winter is coming. Personally i could care less what colors leaves turn, their dying. Big whop.
However the fall in the south is nice! because its warm! and i dont have to dread winter! I love it, and there none of that tree crap. I still carve pumpkins, eat food that grows in the fall, its all good.
Otherwise im only content in spring and summer.
i love the smells (all the spicy scents) the sights (the trees are absolutely beautiful) the fact that it’s cool but not cold (i hate hot weather..blech). i think the only thing i don’t like is the raking, but ah well.
I hate the fall weather, even tho the leaves are really pretty. I’m a Capt. of a major airline company, but I like flying my private aircraft to check out the pretty tree tops at low altitudes.
I rather have the heat and humidity any time then to have the cold and dark days of the fall and winter. I’m an outside person, I spend lots of time outside relaxing in my pool, and throwing parties at my house.
I do like the snow, but at the same time I dread the cold days that come along with it…
fall is so beautiful, i love the colors of the trees, the falling leave, how chilly it is but its just the right temp. I just the love the countryside at fall time in NW ohio…its amazing
The air is so clean and it smells so good
the way the sun throws longer shadows
walking through leaves and breezes blowing
surely, Fall is about comfy.
Fall is most definitely my favorite season of all despite the holidays (Halloween and Thanksgiving break, yay!) and my birthday.
The weather is just beautiful, not too cold yet not too hot, just right with the perfect amount of a fresh, cool breeze flowing around. The mornings are cool and still have that lingering scent of dew. By noon, it warms up to a great degree and temperature.
And don’t forget the landscape. The landscape, the trees, the sky, everything in nature is gorgeous. The grass is still soft and sweet yet a little tingly and cold to run barefoot on, and you often hear the birds chirping merrily away as they prepare to fly south. A beautiful mix of the sun shining down on an expertly-blended array of colors, orange, red, yellow, brown, and the little bit of green left. My favorite leaf combination has to be the red and orange and yellow combo with a little spatter of light-green here and there among the yellows. The leaves and trees look great under the sky, whether it’s bright blue and puffy or backlit and dark.
…And believe it or not, school. I actually look forward to going back to school. I get to see the friends I missed during the summer and get my mind back into action again. There’s something relieved yet wonderful about the accomplishment of a finished assignment.
I hate the Fall! Summer is over, school is starting, and its cold out! It’s no fun at all! How can anybody like Fall? All season have at least one good thing to them except Fall:
Winter: Christmas, Season that makes you feel good for some reason (it just does), School cancellations due to school
Spring: Spring Break, it gets warmer out, Last day of school is at end of Spring
Summer: No school, warm out, swimming, hanging out with friends, etc.
Fall: Football
Wow…fall has football…what a great season….
My favorite parts of the fall are all of my memories.
The amazing smells of apple pie and pumpkin pie filling my house!!!!
I love the smells and the colors.
And the new, crisp chill in the air makes me feel all cozy inside because I know winter is right around the corner
I also love fall attire. Cardigans, scarves, moccasins. I love it all
the weather and sights are my favorite things about Fall! the crisp air, overcast days, and beautiful trees and leaves. i live in Southern California and the thing i hate about it is the heat! Fall is perfect; not too hot and not too cold. although i’ve never felt extreme cold weather here (snow). but i know i am going to the park almost everyday to appreciate this awesome season.
I love when it’s like freezing cold outside and then once you get home you can feel the warmth on your face and coziness on your cheeks. Then all you crave is a cup of hot chocolate or just some warm beverage.
I also like it when it’s raining and it’s also cold outside then you can snuggle up with a loved one watching a movie or just hang out.
i think the most awesome thing of fall is the awesome/beautiful orange colors that appears in the streets. =]
i definitly look forward to fall and winter after all the hot summer days. i think fall means the beginning of the end of the year and it feels awesome because that’s when I feel there is family/friends warmth.
Then there is x-mas which is immediatly right after fall. =]
Riding a bike through forest preserves, the cool air brushing past my face, the orange, yellow and red trees and prairie all around me…and my significant other a few feet ahead of me.
Talk about freedom and happiness and all that good stuff.
Rowing! The fall rowing season is from early September through mid October. I love rowing as a sport, and fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year to do it.
I love it for the color orange. Hikes, soups, new TV shows, World Series, football. Halloween and Thanksgiving.
I enjoy fall, the change of the color of the leaves. But I realy start thinking about time to bake for the holidays and get ready for Christmas. I love my lights and decorations. This year my mom and I did alot canning together, somethiong we have not done in a long time. That brought alot of great fall memories back.
Oh I love fall! I love seeing the different colored leaves and hearing the rustling and crunching sounds of them on the ground when you are walking through them.
I love the crisp, cool mornings and the nice smell of chimneys smoking. I also love to smell certain foods cooking in a home or a store near me because they remind me of growing up. I always think about my memories of the holidays especially when my grandparents were alive. For many years after becoming an adult, I would have memories of school starting because it started after Labor Day in my day.
I used to like Halloween and I love getting ready for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season.
I love seeing pumpkins and eating pumpkin pie/muffins.
It is just such a comforting time of year!
I love hot cocoa and cider on crisp evenings. And busting out the cable knit sweaters and lighter jackets. I enjoy walking outside at outdoor malls and seeing twinkle lights and a cool, crisp breeze. I love the wind and the possibility of snuggling on the porch under a blanket in the evening with your SO. And Halloween. Enough said.
The feeling of the cool, crisp air on my skin.
The beautiful glow of the morning sun hitting the golden leaves.
The crunch of the fallen leaves beneath my feet as I go for an afternoon walk.
The stillness and tranquility of nature that seems to be present as the season arrives.
The smell of baked goodies and warm soups.
The vivid colors of red, orange, and yellow against the blue sky.
The chirping and singing of the birds outside the window.
The feeling of simplicity.. serenity.. peace.. calm..
My absolute favorite time of year.
Just the warm feeling the shades of earth colors changing and it aroma
I look foward to the hoildays with my friend and family. Theres something about pies in the oven and the laughter throughout the house that make me feel warm inside. Sipping on hot coco looking out at the leave falling from the trees. It also reminds me of good i have it, so i better be thankful.
i lik ehe smell of fall
Holidays! Parties, fantastic food, great memories. it just seems like most of your year takes place between september and january doesnt it? the whole season just makes me feel warm and happy. a happy feeling that reminds me of home and family and everything I love most in the world.
It’s my most favorite season. Cool, crispy air and colorful canvas of leaves painted by Mother Nature. Festivity is in the air. Birthday celebrations. Love it.
Fall is my favortie time of the year. Its not cold and its not hot- its just right, The wind is cool. The beatiful leaves falling and I don`t why but I love how there is a crunching sound as you step on the leaves. It feels so homley, you know? So peaceful.
There is so much about Fall that I love. I love the cooling down of the temps and the smell of the crisp Autumn air and the smell of the leaves. To watch them change from green to gold and fire red. Fall seems to re-charge my batteries from a long hot summer. I love hiking in the woods surrounded by the awesome colors and smells. I love the first fire in the fireplace and of the smell of the burning wood. The holidays are fun and exciting for decorating and cooking although Winter is my favorite season Fall is the start of it. My favorite thing is when we get a good cold rain at night with the wind howling and the rain hitting the windows and my wife and I can snuggle on the couch watching the fire, it’s so peaceful and relaxing.
I love the colors of fall ^^
Fall is my favorite season of the year because of two things-the beautiful colors of the leaves and cooler weather. This is a welcome contrast to the brutal summers of the South.
i like the fall
I love the smell of fallen leaves. I really like what you wrote. Are you Yamster? Have a good day.
Fall is a nice break from summer. I love being warm in the house as it rains outside. I love sipping my hot cocoa all snuggled under a cozy blankey. I remember what fun I had as a kid on Halloween. I look forward to little gobblins and princesses knocking on my door. October is the start of the “family” season. Staying inside doing arts and crafts with the kids, baking, snuggling, it is a wonderful season!
The fact that this will be the last Fall for Pres. Bush to ever hold any kind of office.
The leaves turning and the cool weather.
Fall is beautiful. I prefer cool, even cold weather much more than too warm or hot weather. Everywhere I go in my city, it’s still full of gorgeous color; even in November.
The drive to work down my residential street is breathtaking. Fall brings people inside, families are together more; although this can be good for some, not so much for others!
I LOVE Halloween and Thanksgiving, fall scents, the “hunkering down” for the winter feeling. The only things I don’t care for are the earlier sunsets and the occasional driving cold rain. (I don’t mind rain, just not the jabbing in your face stuff).
We take many more walks in the fall, visiting parks, trails, etc.. Fall has always mesmerized me. I live in Wisconsin and I would only move to escape the hot, humid summers…but I would need Fall somewhere else for sure.
