Are we really on a coffee break?

Hey, everyone -

As you may know from the occasional “we’re taking a breather/coffee break” messages, we have been experiencing some glitches recently on Yahoo! Answers. We’re working on the problem now and hope to have it fixed soon.

We know how frustrating this can be and we apologize for the inconvenience. We appreciate your patience while we continue to make improvements to Answers.

  2. “Occasional?” What a joke! More like I’m recieving that message for every two out of three questions I try to answer!

Be sure to post when the problem is fixed….hardly worth trying to post answers anymore!

  8. occasional ???
This is not occasional. This is hourly, if not more often.
However, while you’re at it, how about updating the leader boards? I know some have not been updated for WEEKS and I’m pretty sure most Y!A users would rather see that done than more useless, inaccurate (and annoying) spell check balloons!

Come up with a new way to make light of your problems.

How about: “We’ve got a problem. We don’t want it. So we’ll make it yours. We’ll be back when we feel like taking care of it.”

  23. I have noticed that the arithmetic “plus” signs do not appear on my computer at work, however they do appear on my computer at home. It sounds not only like a software problem, but also a recognition problem.

I have also seen backdoors and security holes that can easily be accessed by the novice hacker. Just judging from what I have seen, it wouldn’t be that difficult to have access to someone else’s account. I hope that YA is aware of these, because it needs to be fixed.

  28. That’s a huge glitch to be called one- how about this folks, coming from a 15 year + computer programmer:

    Dear Yahoo Users,

We are aware of the ongoing server connects and incorrect log usage- we are currently working on new software and an algorithm change to ensure the reliability of our bandwidth and advertiser output.
We are working in tandem to get this resolved promptly and encourage a continuation at no hassle or frustration- so please be patient with us, we are doing as much as we can and when. Our limited employee benefits do not enable us to ensure immediate action.

We apologize for the inconvenience- do not hesitate to reply as much as possible on this blog- we know we receive spam bots, so excuse and ignore those in the time being.

    Kind regards-

I have said this before, and no doubt will say it again..
Fix what you have BEFORE you try to introduce anything new. It seems your ‘new’ content never plays well with the existing content.
Really, how much patience do you think people have? Other sites are calling…

  33. I’ve been reading some past responses to this, and the general yahoo answers public needs to show some respect.
This is a free site. We don’t pay for this service, we use this service as a means of recreation, socialization and information. If there are problems, there are problems, just like with any other site that has to deal with millions of people logging onto their servers every day.
I’m appreciative that yahoo answers is available everyday without me having to shell out a monthly fee.
And you all should be too. If you run into some technical problems every once in a while, take in stride, go make yourself a sandwich, and calm the hell down.

  34. WOW, if people get this excited about things going wrong with YA’s I wonder what happens when important things in their lives go wrong.

This is supposed to be a fun, relaxed way of asking and answering questions. I understand that things happen with servers and computers, sometimes it’s a bit hard to get all of the parts to “talk” with each other.

I for one have never had a computer work 100% of the time.

Yahoo, keep working on the problem, it will get fixed when it gets fixed.

Chill everyone, this is for fun.

  37. it is nearly impossible to get all the bugs out of anything before it is marketed or put out for general useage, that is how the bugs are found…there is nothing so important and needing to be hurried that a break and a nice piece of pie and a glass of milk can harm before getting back to work.

  40. Well, the least that you could do is tell us what was wrong and at least try to prevent these things in the future. By the way, the new spellcheck feature sucks, most of the time it tells me that my words are spelled wrong and I should change it to its suggestion, but the suggestion provided is not proper grammar or is spelled wrong!

  41. I think it is ironic, your “coffee breaks ” happen at the same time there are differing views on political agendas. Never has this occured on mechanical problems, but when differing views occur on liberal views, you stop me in my tracks. You just prove the liberal bias !

  42. I know computer problems can be hard to control. Getting different parts to talk to each other can be a pain.

We all need to remember that this is a free site, even if it wasn’t, glitches like this would still happen.

I haven’t had a computer yet that works 100% of the time.

Relax everyone, this is for fun. A place where we can kill a few minutes, asking and answering some questions. Technology will never work all of the time. Yahoo will get if fixed.

  47. So, when we answer a question, and we get the crappy coffee break thing, which keeps us from answering questions and maybe getting higher rankings, there is nothing that you can/will do about that hen?

It is VERY disenfranchising to keep getting these crappy coffee breaks.

Or, getting caught in the loops of the two top questions.

  48. the first yahoo page seems to be in order of time but going to the page two it almost always starts with a time such as “3minutes ago” so there is always a time gap of about two minutes between the last question on page one and the first question on page two. Sometimes I want to find a recently posted question and it has disappeared into the 1 to 3 minute vanishing area….

  50. I just want you to know, people are asking questions and getting saddled with bad, misleading, or downright incorrect answers because I can’t answer their questions.

If any of them die as a result of taking bad advice that I could have corrected, the blood will be (partially) on your hands.

  51. When I hit “submit” after answering a Q and get the “taking a breather” page, I go back a couple pages to the Q and refresh and find that more often than not, my answer has posted.

  52. I have read the above comments with great interest, and they have certainly altered my perspective. The majority of complaints seem to assume that the complainer has a God given right to perfect service.
How can one expect, that on a free site that is an information highway, where you can ask anything you wish, however stupid, that there won’t be glitches along the way, especially when you consider how many millions are logged on at the same time.

  53. WHY do you have to make it redirect in such a way that when I open 10+ questions in tabs, and 3 of them end up with the “coffee break” error, that I can’t just refresh the tab? I have to find the question again in the list, and then it works.

You should fix the page. It’s not that hard, is it?

Oh, and make it say something a bit less cheesy. “Coffee break”? Unless, of course, you mean that you SPILLED COFFEE ALL OVER YOUR SERVERS and caused the problem.

  58. It’s a good thing most questions give you 3 days to submit an answer.

I’ve been writing up answers to the questions, then when I’m on the “Preview your answer” page and I click “Submit” I get the page saying Y!A has gone to coffee. So I just go to another question and write up another answer. When I get to the coffee page again, I just go on to yet another question.

Then every so often I click the back button until I get to the last question I answered and I hit “Submit” again. If I get the coffee page, I dont worry about it. If the answer goes through, though, I hit the back button again until I get to the answer I wrote just before that one, and I submit it.

Today I kept trying every so often all day, and I was able to post a total of seven answers that I wrote yesterday. That seems like a pretty lame number to me.

    Hope this gets fixed soon.

Some of the questions I am trying to answer are not quite that bad to not be answered, but when someone is talking about a friend thinking about suicide I want to help that person keep that friend alive. It is also really annoying when I am trying to tell someone how to fix their relationship, when the other answers are not helpful.

  98. It’s pathetic how belligerent and rude people get when a LUXURY service that is provided to them FREE OF CHARGE goes down OCCASIONALLY so that those who maintain it can try and IMPROVE it and make it more secure against cascade failure.

Everyone get off you rented high horses, turn off the computer when Yahoo! is on their coffee break and take one yourselves. You might find that those around you have questions that need answering more urgently than some 20 something in Texas who wants to know what color she should dye her hair.

  101. All right, who’s the wise guy who made this thing? When you go to a coffee break, why don’t you disable the “answer this question” altogether when you are taking a **** coffee break? I click on the answer this question button, waste 10 precious minutes on answering the question, hit the preview button, edit the answer a couple of times (and waste 5 additional minutes), then finally hit the submit button. What do I get? “Oops we are **** taking a cofee break”. I feel like hurting you people really bad.

  102. I, personally, think its bred by a society full of video games and television shows and computers that entertain us and basically endeavor to do our thinking for us.

I see kids in line at the grocery store playing hand held video games and people at the park on cell phones and computers. It seems that we’ve been so conditioned by these things that we’re afraid of what will come to the surface if we stop everything else and let ourselves think for a minute…wait, I remember this story…Ray Bradbury told it. Strange that kids aren’t required to read Fahrenheit 451 anymore isn’t it?

  105. i just want to say that i liked the old format better, however since we do have a new format, i have issue with the spell check, it never shows up when you really need it. why can’t it be stationary like it was before? so much more useful. also today we seem to be having serious problems with our contacts missing, then returning, i’m missing more than half of them so i’ve been e-mailing all day. now we been having trouble connecting with the IM. we can’t get a hold of any of our contacts, friends or loved ones unless we e-mail, and some e-mails aren’t even going through. i’ve been on this sight for quite sometime, and i know that updates must be made, even if for routine maintainence, however this is getting redundant! also we all like the 360, and have forever been having trouble with that as well, blogs not posted, i have 36 outstanding invites to people to join my 360, i can’t even make a 360 on one of my accts! verry verry frustrating, now i hear thru the grapefine, that 360 is gone, so we are we all going, it would be nice if there were an annoucement and a choice listed on the home page for information, as well as information on any and all changes to be made!
    thank you very much.

Listen to people when they complain. They aren’t plebs to be treated as you please. You want popularity and a fan-base well those come at a price- you need to offer something in return… It’s just good business policies.

If you repeatedly fail to listen to people, fix big issues, then expect people to leave and flock to a hypothetical

  122. Ladies and Gentlemen of Yahoo! Answers staff:
Yes, the coffee breaks are frustrating, but I do appreciate that a site with a user base the size of Answers is an enormous and ongoing technical challenge and you do your best to meet that challenge. What I am very unhappy about is the testimonies I keep seeing from users who have had their accounts “suspended” (ie, banned) for one abuse and not even an offensive one. Technical excellence on this site is an ongoing goal, yes … but what I desperately want to see is a proper, serious framework of appeals and case reviews for banned users. Gentlemen, we live in a society whose very heart is natural justice, and I want to see a real commitment to fairness and natural justice on Answers.
    Yours most sincerely,

Yes, kids are monsters now. It’s a “me” society out there, they think that we all revolve around them and that’s the bottom line.

I don’t know why people make demands on here, that’s just dumb. Grow up, it’s a world-wide company that’s trying to let us know what’s going on inside the company. I would take that over crickets chirping any day.

I’ve met alot of kids that age that have real and considered questions, but the kids that try to use this site seem to be the kind that aren’t mature enough to be on it. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do for those who meet the guidlines that urgent questions about who is prettier.

  133. …this Coffee Break thing:
-does it have anything to do with us using certain symbols, like the ‘%’ sign?
-does it have anything to do with lengthy answers?

    …another area of inquiry:
there seems to be a fair number (=one is too many, IMHO) of drug questions, like “What’s your favorite thing to do while high?” since WE are members of Yahoo Community, what does Yahoo do to filter out what might be considered completely unnecessary, inane and even drug-use-glorifying chat, to protect US and our children from druggies and their inane banter?

…finally, “Violations:” I’ve received a few, NONE of which are explicit enough to explain WHY I got a VN…once was for asking a question, and answering it, as part of an answer. Another VN was because I answered a druggie question in a sarcastic manner, BUT: why do you allow that type of question in the first place? Essentially: is me mocking a druggie’s stupid question worse than the stupid question? I’d LOVE to see your answer…and did you Violate the asker?

From my viewpoint, there should be ZERO tolerance for drug talk in YA; I should be rewarded for making that druggie look as stupid as they are, not punished; what ARE your priorities?

It’s been driving me crazy for the past two years. You guys add all these new features, yet can’t even attempt to tackle the real problems? Look at all these people talking about trolling, inappropriate violations, inappropriate questions.

  139. Look: thanks for a free website; I guess the pop-up ads, etc., pay the freight for the free stuff. Yippee.
    BUT:
This coffee break fiasco: ONE of the many problems is that quite often, after making a detailed response to a question, based on my many areas of expertise, I will click “Submit” only to find that I get the “Oops” message, but it means more than that: the answer gets lost in cyberspace, all that time and energy WASTED! Dammitall, it’s very frustrating. But since you’ve provided this particular means of feedback to you, I think I’ll just return here as often as I can, just to remind you that I’m not dead!

Try hitting the back button at the top of your screen, and wait for that page to come back. The information you typed should still be there. If so, use your mouse to select all the text, right click and choose Copy. Or do as mentioned above before you hit Submit, so you can re-paste when you try again. The information should be restored as you wrote it.

This reminds me of all the different Star Trek programs shown through the years where the most technologically advanced space stations and star ships are brought to almost distruction by stupid computers that fail while the enemy’s computers never seem to have problems. I’m sure glad my life doesn’t depend upon Yahoo. I could be dead by now.

  146. What I find interesting about these “Coffee Breaks” is that while I am getting them continually regardless of what questions I attempt to answer, other people are able to answer without a problem. I’ve even seen how the person who posted the question, can edit the question in the middle of my repeatedly attempting to submit an answer and getting only the Coffee Break in response.

Why is this Coffee Break not universal? Why does it not go away, when someone spends more than 15 minutes hitting submit, back, edit, preview and submit… over and over again?

  149. Here’s what I found, BonGart: if the answer is long, you are more likely to get the “coffee break” response. After trying to post a long answer several times, I broke it into two sections. I posted the first half, no problem. Then I edited and posted the second half, no problem.

A real pain in the backside and wouldn’t normally bother, except that an Asker specifically wanted my input.

Although I must say sometimes it’s annoying when I’m trying to post a question and the bald guys have cups of coffee with their newspapers in hand, so I have no clue if it posted or not. (The first time that happened I try posting it again and again, I ended up loosing 25 points that day, but I learned my lesson, “If they are having coffee, get up from your computer and go get some coffee for yourself.”)

Thank You again Yahoo! Answers :) I Appreciate your hard work to keep me happy.

PS: The new stuff Yahoo! Answers is pretty awesome Thank You.

And I did see comments about younger people on the sight, I do agree with them, I think you should make it so only 15 and up can get on the site. I say this because the 12 and under are getting exposed to some things they shouldn’t be exposed to, which also brings me to the perverts saying “What is the ideal size for your man’s D***” which is a question i see a lot on here. Or something stupid like “Do you think I’m cute (pics included)” and you click in and it’s a girl showing half her chest area.

Okay off my soap-box *Sheepishly Smiles*

Keep up the good work Yahoo! Answers Team (and maybe in my next vision of your coffee break I’ll add a few girls and give the men wigs)

  176. This is ridiculous. I took the time to write out about a 5 paragraph, detailed answer to an asker’s question about having symptoms of sweating and fever. I’ve been trying to submit my answer for about an hour and a half now, everytime getting that stupid coffee break screen. I’ve tried it with Opera, I’ve tried it with Internet Explorer. Everytime it didn’t work, I cleared the cookies and cache of both browsers and tried again. I’ve prolly tried about 30 or 40 times now, and it’s really pissing me off, that I have a best answer here, but because of this bug, or glitch or whatever you want to call it, I might not be able to submit it. Round of applause for all.

  186. I am only 44 years old. When I was 3 years old, only the black and white TVs existed. My grandfather owned a Model T Ford. He had to crank the motor with a handle in front of the radiator to start the car.

My mother was a TV Producer, Director, Film Maker and became famous because of her documentaries. My mother taught me to face adversities. She gave up her career to raise her 5 children.

I cannot tell you how many times I have written an answer, a long answer, and kaboom, my answer is gone on a coffee break. The last time it happens, it happened 2 times in a row. I am still laughing.

So now it is a gamble. lol. I wondered if my answers should be shorter, just in case it gets lost in cyber space.

When I was a child, the futurist stories in cartoons of men co-habiting with machines was quite a fantasy. Today, the fantasy has become true. The machines are the computers. Computers everywhere, even in cars. Batteries did not exist when electricity did not exist. Can you believe that, that is how unevolved we were.

I read only a few of the answers above and stopped. Why are they so angry when they loose what they wrote. They could write it first in words. But they don’t because Yahoo is unique. They could copy and paste later before they Submit an answer.

To answer a question brings up self esteem. To loose the answer to a coffee break, brings down self esteem. Why ? There are few people on this planet who truly understand the function of the human brain.

When you write, you access different part of your brain. When you loose an answer to a coffee break, you access a different part of your brain. In 2006, I was rebellioius and my Yahoo account got deleted. I lost hundreds of blogs I had never saved elsewhere.

To keep, own and display an answer on Yahoo Answer is a prize to have. I love what I write and I reread what I write so I can learn to write better. I write too much, I have no time to reread all that I have written. So I do not save much of my writting anymore.

Anger is impatience. I am very patient with Yahoo because without Yahoo, seriously, I would be dead in 2006. I love everything Yahoo. Especially my avatar.

My mom passed away in May. My mom only discoverd the internet a year and a half ago. She discovered my avatar a year ago. She logged on to Yahoo everyday to see what my avatar looks like that day. We laughed hard together. She wondered why my avatar was so sexy. I told her that it was because I am sexy in real life. We both laugh. The last time I saw my mother was in 2002.

Can you imagine what Yahoo is going to be like in 25 years ! Go Yahoo Team Go !

    btw Greetings from Seattle

  195. Yes, it is terribly frustrating when you are so enthusiastic that you spend 30 minutes you never had in order to help someone only to get the breather notification. Which is funny cause you can post answers elsewhere, but not the one you spent so much time on. Always happens when I use numbers, or have long answers. Just tell me why it’s rejected and I’ll change my answer. What a waste.

Aren’t you into Day 10 of getting this fixed? I honestly should never have to see this “coffee break” slug and what makes it especially frustrating is that I cannot back up and resubmit my answer. That question I am trying to answer is truly lost to me.

I realize that even Disneyland takes rides out for refurbishment, but they make certain that it is not out for that long. Every day these notices keep showing up makes more and more people think that you do not know what you are doing. And what took so long for you to admit it?

  215. Why do I get the “We’re on a Coffee Break” page all the time? It’s rather annoying. I can see that other members can post, while I cannot. Why? Is there a limit to the number of answers that a member can post? If there there is an unspoken limit, I think it’s appropriate to let the member know, rather than just block them.

Can anyone explain this to me? If others can post, why can’t I?

  221. What I find interesting about this “coffee break” is that I am not able to answer the question I have taken time to answer, but I am able to answer other questions. I went back and it seemed that I was only unable to answer the one question. Very frustrating. Even more frustrating that Yahoo calls it a coffee break. I am sick of this and it needs to be fixed NOW!!!!

It is also hindering me. I have great answers but my ability to leave them has fallen off for over a week and this affects my percentage of top answers too.

I realize that I’m going to have to deal with the occasional malfunction due to outtages and upgrades and what have you. But no problem that Yahoo has had in the past has been as consistant as this “coffee break” issue. I just don’t seem to understand why this is a chronic problem. 251. Is Answers.yahoo.com the most useless, frustrating way to waste time online? Most of the answers are answered poorly, some with stupid comments, most have already been answered very well on other sites, just when someone needs an answer quickly, AY is taking a breather. AY is addicting, sort of like trying to get tickets at Gatti’s but, without the cheap trinkets at the end. I hope no one takes many of these answers seriously.
