Why was that featured?

How do I determine what I can afford for rent?  For many people just starting out on their own, figuring out how much they can afford for housing can be tricky. CarlisleGirl provides a good formula for calculating your expenses.

Have you ever felt that even your most instinctive gestures fall into set patterns sometimes?  Every once in a while we run across a philosophical question we think is noteworthy. This Q&A combo is a perfect example, so we thought we’d share it with the community.

Do appliances consume energy when they’re plugged in but turned off?  This question caught my eye because it’s something I obsess about. It drives my fiancé crazy when I unplug everything from the toaster oven to the electric can opener. Austin Semicontuctor’s Best Answer clears up some confusion, and will allow me, and many others out there, to rest easy with all those appliances plugged in.

Hopefully your knowledge has increased as a result of these featured questions, and all the others we highlight in the Best of Answers Module.

Editors spend countless hours going through the Q&A on Answers to highlight some of the top stuff, but with the amount of content added every minute, it’s impossible for us to catch all the great questions and answers that the community comes up with. If you’ve seen a question that you think should be featured, send it to y_answrs_editors@yahoo.com. [NOTE: Please put “Possible Featured Question” in the subject line and include the question URL in the email. This will help us sift through the many emails we receive and find the question on Answers easily]

Philosophical? Are you kidding me? Have you even read any of the questions on Y!A? There are so many better ones, that one isn’t noteworthy whatsoever, the answer is completely obvious, there’s nothing “philosophical” about it.

  7. Personally I always find the featured questions stupid, obvious, and I never give them a second glance.
You have to dig for the good questions.

  10. I just made the tomato soup from a featured answer, and it was great.

Featured answers tend to be of very general interest–I find ones in my field a lot more interesting–but I think they’re very well-selected general interest questions. So thanks, Y!A staff!

  11. DEFINITELY agree and echo Jessica’s thoughts. Some of the “philosophical” Questions that are asked are the most ridiculous questions thought of that I’m sure my dog or my 12 month old could work out! Ones that I’ve seen on my time in Yahoo Answers really make me wonder about the level of intelligence this world is succumbing to.

  12. I like the ones that are wrong that you chose to feature .
Like the one that said that powdered sugar was HALF cornstarch.
It is more like one percent , not fifty , but the thought of people at their home wasting both sugar and cornstarch in the food processor cracks me up.
It is nice to know you share my sense of humor , even if it is at the expence of the ignorant , and misinformed.
    Thanks !

  13. I am taking the opportunity to post a complaint. Have you noticed that most Q’s are poorly worded Q’s? Most Q’s are chatty and give no indication of what the asker wants to know until one goes to the additional details and even then it’s hard to figure out what the real Q is. (The 5W ways of asking a Q (or writing a news article headline) suggestion is a good one. But more is needed to avoid or reduce the problem as seen in this bottom-page sample of Q’s in economics taken moments ago:

    Open Questions in Economics
Which of the following statement is false?
    Economic question please helppppp meeee
Barriers to trade ? Barriers to trade:
The cost of cultivation increases with the usage of modern farming methods.give reasons why this is so
    Resolved Questions in Economics
Explain how international specialisation and trade based on comparative advantage can yeild benefits……
Are the home prices falling because the Dollar is so devalued (.62) …??
Why is the Dollar only worth 62 cents…?
If the U.S. is so much in the defect than why do we give away money? For example, game shows, the lottery, etc

    Few are properly formatted Qs.

I suggest YA require asking a certain # of Q’s as part of the requirement of ascending to the next level. People who ask Q’s tend to be more conscious of how to answer the Q asked w/o digressions.

  14. although this answer was a good one the accepted way to determine how much should be spent is to calculate the TDR or total debt ratio.. you add your housing costs and utilities and other debts and divide by the monthly gross income and mutiple that by 100 that will give you the percentage of income paid each month. 40% is the maximum recommended amount for these items
creating a monthly budget is often easier to do than follow and people often forget to consider unexpected bills, and interest , and repairs,
