Calling all Batman fans: Ask Christian Bale a question!

Tags: ,

batman and jokerEvery summer needs a blockbuster movie, and this year is no different—Batman is back.

Tim Burton was the first director to immortalize Batman on the big screen, and ever since Michael Keaton’s impressive performance alongside Kim Basinger’s, the caped crusader has had many changing faces.

In “The Dark Knight,” actor Christian Bale brings to life Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, who’s fighting against the fearful Joker, played by the late Heath Ledger. Rumor has it that we see our hero cross the thin line between good and evil like never before

As the latest edition of one of the most famous superhero stories opens today, we’ve partnered with Yahoo! Movies to bring a little “Dark Knight” frenzy to Answers.

We’re asking you, the Answers community, for the perfect question to ask Christian Bale. The best question will be put to him by Yahoo!, on your behalf, and recorded on video.

So, what do you want to ask Christian?

  1. How did it feel to take on a character with such a huge and constantly evolving back story, who has been played by so many other actors and is beloved by so many people?

Also do you think Batman could whup Superman in a fight?

Though many people doubt that the franchise would slowly creep to a halt, and considering the fact that you have played many great roles, do you think that the Batman franchise along with all the other superhero franchises will finally come to a halt, or will they slowly take over all the movie theatres from now till who ever knows when?

You are my favorite actor chosen to portray the role of Batman, with you, he has a depth that has never been seen in previous Batman films. Do you think the character will continue to grow? You’ve put your body through hell and back to be the best in some of your roles (e.g., the sickening shell of a body in The Machinist, then back to a physical specimen in Batman Begins, then a little too lanky in Rescue Dawn). My question is since you have finished this batman and are going to become John Connor are you going to completely focus yourself on the Terminator series. Or preparing yourself for the next Batman if it comes out.

  60. Greetings. As an avid fan of yours (since I caught American Psycho on DVD) I have seen you play a plethora of deep thought provoking & exciting roles in movies like Batman, the Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma, and the upcoming Terminator movie. I thank you for your hard work. What do you believe is the reason you have been able to successfully play so many radically different parts, while others in Hollywood are so quickly typecast into a particular type of role? Also, would you look forward to the possibilty that Christopher Nolan, Michael Caine and yourself (3 movies together) will have a work relationship like Original Batman director Tim Burton & Johnny Depp (6 movies together & counting)?

What are the similarities and differences of playing the roles of Batman and Bruce?

Why was Robins character left out of this movie?

  94. After seeing the movie, I have been wowed by both yours and Heath’s performances. When dealing with a symbol of society, it is all too frequent that actors fall into the trap of stereotyping the archetypal have-to-save-everyone character. My question is, how did you prepare yourself to change that stereotype?

  95. As I type this Dark Knight has not been released for even 24 hours yet, but on imdb.com the film has a 9.7 rating out of 10. Also with around 4,000 votes it is ranked as the #4 most highest rated movie only being beat by Godfather 1 and 2 and the Shawshank Redemption. While this is obviously a masterpiece does it deserve a higher rating than classics like Gone With the Wind, Caseblanca, and Schindler’s List?

  149. why in these two Batman movies that you have starred in did they decide to go backwards in the story and kinda start all over in aspects of showing where Batman started, how he became Batman and why, his villians, how his parents died. I personally think that the previous movies that started out with Michael Keyton as Batman were very good movies and although the actor who played Batman changed several times, the general storyline was good and well established. Why change everything now. I also don’t think that your last Batman movie was any good at all. Perhaps if you hadn’t spent so much time trying to show people stuff that already happened you could have commited more time to making a movie with a lot more substance. Katie Holmes was a total floparoo as your love interest last time and the Scarecrow wasn’t scary at all. BORING! As far as I’m concerned no one will ever be the Joker like Jack Nicolson. I think you should hang up the cape and stop trying to redo what was already done. I personaaly will not waste my time and money seeing you flop on the big screen again, if i’m curious about Ledger’s performance I’ll wait till your “greatest” movie is in the 99cent bin at Walmart.

  171. Mr. Bale

Well this is more of a suggestion. First off I thought that log falling on chest thing in Batman was stupid as hell. Bench pressing is still not that functional no matter how many real life occurences of log on chest accidents have happened. I haven’t seen the new one but the thrid should have batman pushing wheel barrows full of junk up hill and than pushing some fat dude off something. Also clean and pressing barrels than picking some little guy up like Bruce Lee. Finally he should do fireman carries with sandbags and than haul ass up the stairs to avoid something horrible with his girl on shoulder. Maybe even show some band punching with heavy resistance bands and weigthed russian twists with bag work and than have him knocking people out. Ka-Blamo!!! You need to sell that Bruce is hardcore athlete as well as martial artist cause its Batman’s dedication that makes him a hero not some “power’. The first had him doing pushups every morning, that is nothing.Look up rosstraining.com as well as books like Dinosaur Training. This dedication to his athletic ability, martial arts and doing what is right in a city ravaged by crime is what made me love Batman above all hero’s. Plus everyone can tell that Superman is just Clark Kent without Glasses, I hate that! Anyways I know this is now officially a rant ,but these are my main concerns in regards to the movie. Also if you can do one arm chin-ups on a rope with a dumbeel in free hand and than have a seen where you shoot your grappling hook with girl in arms I would believe Batman is actually strong enough to do this. I know you are very busy but you make so much money I am not going to expect anything less. I make eleven bucks an hour and still workout after 10 hours of manual labor with a pick axe and shovel. So……. Make Batman look like a true hero. You are the face of Batman now and you can give the audience a wow by building your strength to true superhero levels. Contact Ross Enamait if you want an awesome personall trainer that can get you there. Anyways, I guess my question would be , what does Batman do that makes him such a indominable force when fighting gangs of hardened criminals? Is it just pushups?

  178. Hi there, loved the movie, you probably get asked this a lot, but will there be a third? I like the directors style. I mean it would be great, I like what they did to Harvey Dent in the dark night, but I don’t want this to fall down a flight of stairs like the spiderman series seemed to do. I would like to see one more, Joker escapes, maybe teams up with the penguin, or someone else, and then end it, don’t even throw the other two in it, either robin or bat girl, because that would almost hurt the feel of the movie. Maybe bat girl, but not much of robin since two face is dead, you director killed that story line , but it was still a great movie. I like the new feel to it, less childish, more action.

  210. In this last installment it’s clear that Bruce Wayne is getting older and is growing tired with his secret life as Batman. While in his search for a replacement “public-faced” hero to take care of Gotham city he becomes deeply overwhelmed with his new opponent and reign of terror and gives in to the Joker’s demand to reveal Batman’s identity. Luckily he’s saved at the last minute but prior to this point and even in past installments Bruce Wayne and Batman have always given me the impression of being two separate people who join forces to combat criminals. Here for the first time after being pushed to the absolute limit I see Bruce Wayne and Batman become one and give birth to a new breed of hero with an unrelenting dedication fueled with a raging dark and menacing psychosis which eventually proves to be enough to capture the Joker.

What’s your interpretation and will we see more of this new Batman?

  226. Many actors do not get the chance to bring such a well known character to life or provide their own flare and style to an existing character. The actors whom are given the opportunity to do so take the risk of being condemned or praised for their portrayal of the character. When the later occurs and the actor’s style is hailed as wonderful they can often become “stuck” playing that role for an extended time or being remembered as that character. Examples being that of actors who have lent a hand or performance in films such as Batman, Superman, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. Among actors there seems to be a debate as to whether playing a re-occurring role is harmful or helpful to one’s overall career. With the recent acclaim and box office craze of the Dark Night, what is your view on this topic and what do you feel is it’s affect on your acting career so far?

  280. You take your roles very seriously, not only in the nuances of each different character and how you act them out, but also with the way your body looks. I understand that you would have to be physically fit for a role such as Bruce Wayne/Batman, but there have been other roles in which you have either lost dangerous amounts of weight, and others where you seem to have a few extra pounds, not fat, but not extremely fit like the role you are playing currently in the Dark Knight. Are you ever concerned about the long term effects of your body transformations? And if so, how do you go about lessening the negative effects of your weight loss and gain in such a short amount of time?

When developing a character such as Batman whom has been played by other actors, do you find it easier to take up the way a character was developed and model your character after the way he was portrayed or is it easier to make the character your own and portray it the way you see?

  326. Hi Mr. Bale,

I thoroughly enjoyed Batman Begins, but I believe the late 80s and early 90s was the most ideal time frame for the Batman series due to its more commercialized, materialistic, stylish, and relatively dark nature.

Despite the new Batman movie’s immense entertainment level; do you think these aspects of the film are weakened due to the era it was made in?

Also: What do you think of the Batman Tank compared to the Batmobile in the Tim Burton movies?

  363. Hello, Mr. Bale! Thank you for reviving the Dark Knight without the camp. I loved your performance in Movie # 1. At the same time, I kept thinking what a blast you must be having on the set.

Your Batman props seem they’d be so much fun for the actors to use–the Batman uniform with all its gadgets (of course), apparently used by you; the gliding cape; and the batmobile (of course, again). Hand to hand combat is a favorite movie fantasy of mine, and yours (Bats 1 and 2) looks real.

But I know any action/fantasy film would have relied heavily on mat painting, CGI, cutaway props, and stunt folk these days. So, what was simulated, what was genuine, and what working props, stunts, and fights did you really have an opportunity to enjoy?

  384. Mr. Bale,

I know this is the 83429015 question posted concerning Heath Ledger, and there are probably more to come, but I will ask it nonetheless.

(Actually it a few questions put in one, I just couldn’t narrow it down)

“The Dark Night” is definitely the movie of the year, and i think thats because of the killer performances given by all the actors. You, Aaron Eckhart, and the phenomonal delivery of the Joker Heath Ledger gave us. Do you agree with all the recognition and hype Mr. Ledger is receiving, and do you feel he deserves the Oscar?

Heath Ledger truly immersed himself in this role, and played the part of Joker on and off the set to master it (which DEFINITELY paid off). Were there ever times, whether it be acting in a scene with him or on lunch break, when he really creeped you out?

How do you feel Heath Ledger’s passing affected you, the rest of the cast and crew, and ultimately, the movie itself?

And finally, I just wanted to say awesome movie! I really enjoyed it and am a HUGE fan. Hopefully there is another to follow!

  386. I’ll just ask you a general question; how are you so dedicated? I’m not referring to your acting (which I’ve always enjoyed) but what you do to your body for roles.

What was it like losing all that weight for The Machinist then gaining it all 63 back for Batman Begins? And how did you do it without dropping dead? I get the strong impression most bodies would have said “hell no” after a while and just quit.

  387. I wasn’t very smitten with the new Batman (tho it was certainly an improvement over the preceeding two, the latter which I haven’t seen at all) and if I eventually get around to seeing Dark Knight, it’ll be largely for Heath Ledger’s final role; there have been just too many incongruities and I’m not talking about between the comics and film.

I suppose in regards to a question, it would be about the Bat-suit: why is Batman’s head so misshapen and large when the Burton/Shumacher one’s weren’t and why did they decide on such a cheap cape? It looks quite a bit like they ran out of money and just ran to the fabric store and tacked on a piece of cloth.

One more maybe: is there anybody who doesn’t know/find out that Bruce Wayne is Batman? Vicki Vale, Selina Kyle, Ed Nigma, (Harvey Dent I?), Lucius Fox, the love interest in the first rebooted film…

  391. While I was watching The Dark Knight yesterday, it struck me: I want a do-over. I want out. After everything I’ve been through in my life, after trying to overcome a violent, painful past with limited success, I want to get the hell outta Dodge. Now, the Joker went crazy in an unappealing way, but a case could be made that Batman went crazy, too. I mean, his kind of crazy is a little more credible than most kinds of crazy because he has a good imagination and the money to bring his fantasies to life, but there’s something not quite sane about the way he escapes from his painful reality.

So, my question is: what about the rest of us? What about those of us who don’t have Bruce Wayne’s money and power? How do we escape pasts we hate, lives we hate, countries we hate?

So I can’t be Batman. Duh. How do I get a do-over in the real world?

  393. Mr. Bale,

Congratulations on another successful movie, and we look forward to your next successes.

Now that you have played the role of Bruce Wayne / Batman in two movies, I believe you are taking us (the viewers) into a more in-depth understanding of the character. Conversely, the writers are doing the same with both your character, and those of the villians. Unquestionably, Heath’s portrayal of the Joker is frightening, yet riviting, in the story. A very complex character, to say the least.

My question to you is this: As you have seen your two Batman movies progress, and now that you probably have a good handle of the primary Batman villians, which villian do you feel would be an outstanding selection as the next in-depth study for a possible 3rd installment? Obviously, Harvey Dent a.k.a. Two-Face will play a role, but there are other notible villians that could play alongside, or separate altogether, that, with skill, could be written and played outstandingly, similar to that of Heath’s portrayal.

Best wishes for your future projects.

  397. Hello, Mr. Bale!
First off, I want to say your performances in every role you take go above and beyond. With every performance, I find myself forgetting that I am watching a film and not in the same room co-existing with the same characters. (Which is one of the things that set you apart from many other actors.)

I was wondering, there are many roles in which you dig very deep into this character’s psyche; do you ever find yourself loosing faith in humanity or, instead, do you find the good that there is in everyone?

I look forward to seeing you in your many other roles in the future.

  400. Mr.Bale,

Now in my opinion, you are the best Batman so far. You are able to bring in the sinister aspects of Bruce Wayne’s tragic life (much like Michael Keaton), yet you can pull off the funny parts of the movie (the scene with the pool in Batman Begins, for example).

My question is this: Do you feel a lot of pressure having to play the role so many amazing actors have played? I mean playing a role that George Clooney and Val Kilmer have played, in a series of movies that Jack Nicholson played in, it must be nerve wrecking! You’re the perfect actor for the role.

P.S. Can’t wait to see you as John Connor…

I wanted to ask you: what was the hardest part about getting into your role as Bruce Wayne/Batman? The character has his own inner conflict (identity crisis seems like an understatement). How did you get yourself in the mindset necessary to convey that kind of struggle on screen?

My Q is: Do you think Batman can be more fun, more jokes and stuff? I believe the combination of jokes and powerhouse will lift the character and the…tickets.

My question for you is if Chris Nolan decides to make a third Batman movie, would it live up to the expectations that The Dark Knight did? Would you want to do a third film, or let The Dark Knight be the best and last? And if a third Batman was made, would the Joker be recast? I heard Jonny Depp would step in, would he be a different villian?

What is with the annoying deep voice you do when you are Batman? And why do you always purse your lips? Do you realize how annoying that it is? Do you watch your own movies? And if so do you honestly think that you are a good actor? Especially playing the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, do you really seriously think that you did the role any justice? Because personally I think you ruined Batman for me in those movies. I liked The Dark Knight in spite of your role. I wonder how anyone can think that you are a good actor.

While watching your films, I’ve sensed that you are a very “spiritually grounded” person. The roles that you have chosen lead me to believe that you might study “Buddism”, is this true?

    As for my second question…

What would be the “ultimate role” in your opinion? Is there any character “real” or “fictional” that you are just dying to portray? You know, the role that you would almost do for “free” if given the opportunity : )

    Additional Details:

I am wondering for the film watchers out there has there been a lot of discussion as to whether or not there will be several Terminator movies starring Mr. Bale as John Connor, and if so are there similar discussions concerning Batman, and; do the two conflict or can this all work out given the age of Michael Caine, (Alfred) and the haste that should be taken in making Batman movies and the age of Arnold Schartzenegger, (The T100 who really needs to be seen in the upcoming movie, even if he is only morphed in on the army), or; if there is no conflict; how soon can audiences expect another installment of these two sagas?

I guarantee you in a month or so these questions will be on the minds of your fans and movie fans in general.

You, after all is the protagonist of the story and a shining star yourself? The trailer to Dark Knight focused mostly on The Joker and not Batman and it is the same with all the publicity material cooked up by the studio? Stroll around Times Square New York and who do you see standing 30 feet stall on the gigantic billboard? Yup, you guess it right.

  583. Hi Christian,

I’d like to know what it is you do to get into physical shape for your movies. Going from your role in “The Machinist”—where you were emaciated—to your buff body in “American Psycho” and “Batman” how do you do it? Besides weight training are you drinking protein shakes and what kind of diet are you on? And how taxing is that on your body?

    The Lamborghini Murcialgo
    The Bat mobile
    or
    Maggie Gyllenhaal

  586. Christian, just wanted to say that your performance in The Dark Knight is underrated under all of the attention given to the late Heath Ledger’s the Joker. However, your acting balanced it out magnificently–what’s the Joker without the Batman.

Anyway, the question. So, as the media tell us, Heath Ledger went to what could be considered the extreme in order to capture what he saw as the true, new essence of the Joker. He became the Joker, so to speak. Thus I ask, what is the one character, movie, and scene that you have acted out and lost yourself completely (or close to it) within the role? The one moment (or moments, if there are more than one) where you have fond yourself completely immersed in the character you were playing?

  595. There has been many director/actor partnerships throughout cinematic history; some celebrated and notable combinations include Scorsese/DiCaprio, Tim Burton/Johnny Depp, and my favorite, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese.

How long do you plan on working with Christopher Nolan and do you believe that you guys have cemented a place in Hollywood’s director and actor teamwork folklore?

  602. Firstly, I’d just like to say great work with The Dark Knight! It’s one of my favourite films this year, hands down. My question is: If you were given the opportunity to create your own villain to stand opposite you in the next Batman film, be there another, what would they be like?

  606. In The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne believes he has found someone moral and strong enough to take up the mantle (literally in the case of the caped crusader!) but loses him to the evil side.

Is there anyone in today’s world that you think typifies the traits Batman was looking for – strong, honest, passionate and concerned for the prevalence of good?

  608. Since you have played Bruce Wayne/Batman twice now, I will assume that you have had an opportunity to get into his “head”. What do you feel is the greatest spiritual, mental, or philosophical challenge that your character deals with, and how does it shape his decisions?

In other words, what separates BW/Batman from Ras al Gul or the Joker, other than the Law?

  611. In 3:10 to Yuma, you and Crowe are not Americans. However I am. Being from Colorado, I thought it was 3:10 from Yuma, Colorado. Was this an act of discrimination against CO. vs. Arizona, and if so, make the next picture from Yuma, Australia to give Crowe someone to punch, because he is a wimp here.

How was working with Maggie Gyllenhall different than when you worked with Katie Holmes?
And for the next film, do you think director Nolan may explore new romantic and dangerous ventures with Batman like, say, with the introduction of Catwoman?

  619. While Superhero movies are guarenteed a good box office, many ultimately fail in sequels because unlike the comic book where a story and character can be developed over time, a movie is limited to the wham-bam hero origin and his 2-3 villians per movie. What would you do to improve the genre’s legacy.

Since you were clearly friends due to the long film time, and since there have been speculations of an Oscar for his great role as Joker, I just wantto know if you think he will get the Oscar, or if not, should he, or who will get it.
